Abstract:
Introduction This paper describes the usability of mobile shower commodes for adults with spinal cord injury, as measured by the new electronic Mobile Shower Commode Assessment Tool Version 1.0 (eMAST 1.0). Method A retrospective analysis of data collected for a cross-sectional validation study with adults aged 18 years or older, living with spinal cord injury, who use mobile shower commodes for toileting and/or showering ( n = 32), was conducted. Usability was measured using the eMAST 1.0. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative data were analysed using directed content analysis. Results Overall usability on both the features and performance subscales was rated as high to very high. Ratings of very low to low usability were reported for portability/foldability/packability (41%, n = 13), mobile shower commode stability (25%, n = 8), positioning and repositioning (25%, n = 8), seat cushioning (25%, n = 8), and lower leg supports (22%, n = 7). Items receiving the highest number of qualitative comments included lower leg supports, seating, propelling and manoeuvring, cleaning and maintenance, and stability. Conclusion Results across the eMAST 1.0’s subscales showed high to very high usability. However, analysis of individual items and qualitative comments showed specific areas of reduced usability for individual users. Item-level responses and qualitative comments suggest research is urgently needed in the areas of stability, portability, durability, and seating. Studies exploring use of the eMAST 1.0 during initial provision, and after short- and long-term mobile shower commode use, are also needed.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a preliminary psychometric evaluation of the electronic mobile shower commode assessment tool (eMAST) 1.0. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional validation study was undertaken with 32 adults with spinal cord injury (SCI), aged 18 years or older, who use mobile shower commodes for toileting and/or showering. The eMAST 1.0, Quebec user evaluation of satisfaction with assistive technology, Version 2.0 (QUEST 2.0), and modified system usability scale (SUS) were administered online via SurveyMonkey. The eMAST 1.0 was re-administered approximately seven days later. Psychometric properties of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and convergent validity were assessed. Findings As hypothesised, the eMAST 1.0 demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s α=0.73, N=32); acceptable test-retest reliability (intra-class coefficient (3, 1)=0.75 (0.53-0.88, 95 per cent confidence interval) (n=27)); and strong, positive correlations with the QUEST 2.0’s devices subscale and modified SUS (Pearson’s correlation coefficients 0.70 and 0.63, respectively). Research limitations/implications The sample was not fully representative of Australian data in terms of gender, or state of residence, but was representative in terms of SCI level. Age data were not assessed. The sample size was small but adequate for a preliminary psychometric evaluation. Originality/value The preliminary psychometric evaluation indicates the eMAST 1.0 is a valid and reliable instrument that measures usability of MSCs for adults with SCI. It may be useful for exploring relationships between usability and satisfaction of MSCs.

Abstract:
The use and effectiveness of 54 selected assistive devices were studied in 30 recipients of home care services. Of these 54 devices, 82% were used and 69% were used routinely for the intended purpose. Twenty patients had bedside commodes and nine had bathtub benches or shower chairs. Only a few patients had long-handled shoe horns, reachers, raised toilet seats, sock aids, elastic shoelaces, commode armrests, or long-handled scrub sponges. No patient had a rocker knife, even though stroke was the most common medical condition. Device training, done inconsistently, generally took 30 minutes or less, spanned 1 to 2 sessions, occurred within 6 months of impairment or 1 year after onset, was carried out by a home health agency, and was judged adequate by the patient. Family members were as apt as not to be included in the training. No association was discerned between training and usage or timing of training in relation to length of impairment and usage. A substantive amount of human help was needed to complete the tasks involving the device. Device disuse was attributed to functional improvement, misprescription, and ineffectiveness.

Abstract:
The establishment of the Principate by Augustus did not meet with the approval of a section of the senatorial aristocracy, which had lost most of the prerogatives considered to constitute their dignitas and auctoritas to the Princeps. The contestation and opposition of philosophical and political groups to the "legitimacy" of a reigning emperor became a feature of Roman public life. Opposition was seen as essential to preserving freedoms and ancient prerogatives. However, the oppositional rhetoric masked the foundation of the new regime, which was also based on republican institutions revised and influenced by philosophical doctrines, including Stoicism. The aim was to analyse the opposition of a section of the aristocracy to the Principate as a system and the Princeps as its embodiment. Faced with a power that was increasingly centred on the person of the prince, the question of the "good prince" arose, with currents both favourable and hostile to imperial power, among members of the aristocracy, particularly the senatorial aristocracy, within which the Stoics were to develop philosophical and political power balance in an attempt to influence the nature and form of political power. . It was therefore only natural that they should help to shape the Princeps' powers

Abstract:
The Forum of Augustus in Rome was a great public square opened in 2 BC built around the Avenger Mars temple with long marble porticoes and filled with sculpture series that resumed all the history of Rome from its very foundation, the deeds of all its great men and of the house of Augustus, Pater Patriae. We focused on the relationship of the different architectural spaces with the decoration, offering a reading of the multiple iconographic sets using the symbolic and visual links between the iconic elements. This work has allowed us to reveal the complex web of relationships between the sculptures and reliefs that were the iconographic program of the forum.

Writings on Commons, Common-Pool Resources (CPRs), Public Goods (PGs), and Cooperation has a twofold aim: firstly to provide an overview of the different concepts related to Commons, CPRs and PGs in order to help us to clarify their particularities and commonalities, and secondly, to offer some explanations of the phenomenon of cooperation in settings framed by the individuals' actions over the appropriation of CPRs and/or the contribution to PGs, which, in turn, leads to the emergence of conflicting interests in terms of the reasons and benefits involved agents might have in virtue of pursuing a certain behavior - i.e., individually competitive or an individually cooperative behavior. That is, what from the collective point of view is known as a social dilemma.

Abstract:
Vehicle exhaust emissions are today more and more restrictive. Common Rail engines allow to reach these requirements thanks to the high pressure injection. This pressure can vary from 200 up to 1600 bar according to the engine torque and speed. The goal of this work is to define the rail pressure controller based on the Common Rail features and to improve performance and robustness. Works have been done as follows: study of the Common Rail system and development of the physical model ; development of strategies and command laws ; real tests on vehicle. Vehicle tests showed a high improvement on performance and robustness thanks to the new methodology based on the Common Rail features and the advanced command laws (H8 control for Linear Parameter Varying systems). In particular the Linear Fractional Transformation (LFT) approach has been considered

Abstract:

Mason, Nicholas Craig. "Forging a New Global Commons Introducing common property into the global genetic resource debate." Thesis, University of Canterbury. School of Political Science and Communication, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/904.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an analysis of recent attempts to regulate the governance of genetic resources through the initiation of new global commons regimes. These attempts have arisen out of a combination of the growing recognition of genetic resources' value and global nature; a new resurgence in support for the common property paradigm; and, during a period in which the world is becoming increasingly globalised, with many governance competencies moving to the supranational level. They can be viewed as part of a broader effort to proffer the common property approach as a legitimate alternative in the property regime debate: a debate that has increasingly become trapped in the public-private dichotomy at the dawn of the twenty-first century. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the success of these attempts, and offer suggestions about how future attempts might be more successful. While there are a multitude of books, articles, opinion pieces and media reports produced that concern themselves with property theory, intellectual property theory, the efficacy or morality of applying property regimes to living materials, and the threats and promises of globalisation, all of which influence the notion of a potential global genetic commons, relatively little has been written directly on the idea of applying global common property regimes to genetic resource governance issues. The first part of this thesis constructs a theory of a global genetic commons, drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, while the second part tests this theory in order to analyse the outcomes of the recent attempts, and suggest directions for future research. The thesis finds that the conception of a global genetic commons is indeed a valid one, and that while not all attempts so far have been successful, the common property paradigm does offer valuable insights for the future governance of genetic resources at the global level.

Abstract:
My thesis is a call for the need of an intersectional awareness in the field of the commons, or the common or commoning. For that reason, I focus on a rather undertheorized subfield, the feminist commons because I deem that it promotes a more intersectional perspective than the male-dominated commons. My main effort concentrates to argue for the potentialities of an intersection between the commons and (feminist) decolonial project. Notions such as coloniality of power, the principle of intersectionality and the ethos of decoloniality help me to build my argument step by step. The thesis does not provide answers rather it poses questions and tries to open space for a fruitful experimentation.
