Saunders, Louise M. "The environmental concern of commerce students -a survey." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Environmental Science, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/10396.

Full text
Abstract:
The evolution of attitudes towards the environment has culminated in the entrenchment of environmental concern as a characteristic of Western society. Overseas research has found young, well educated, urban individuals are most likely to express concern for the environment. However, the features of environmentally concerned New Zealanders have largely failed to attract the attention of researchers. In a sample of University of Canterbury Commerce students, aspects of environmental concern, and salient issues, were identified. As expected, individuals raised in urban centres were more likely to express environmental concern, although the expected influence of age and education were not observed. Women were more concerned about the environment, as were New Zealand-raised and New Zealand-ethnic respondents. It was concluded that the environmental concern of this population has many similarities to populations in other Western nations in the salience of issues, the issues of concern, and the levels of concern shown. As the respondents in this study were not representative of the New Zealand public, the suggestions for further research focus on the need to investigate environmental concern in a representative sample. A need was also suggested for research into areas of specific concerns, actual behaviour, commitment, and knowledge in the New Zealand population.

Abstract:
There is a great need for competent teaching of Business English in tertiary institutions in Vietnam. At the Hanoi Foreign Trade College (HFTC) alone, about 150 students per year seek training to equip them to work in export and import organizations, banks for foreign trade and customs departments. In teaching such students, one problem is the provision of interesting and relevant materials. This study addresses the question of selection of materials and techniques for teaching business English listening skills. This Field Study Report consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 describes the purposes and aims of study, the background to this study, dealing with students, the teaching and the curriculum. Chapter 2 looks at the general theory about listening and in particular listening in business. The chapter also describes listening requirements for business graduates from the HFTC. Chapter 3 discusses criteria for selection of textbooks for language teaching in general and for teaching listening skills in business English in particular. Chapter 4 surveys the teaching of business English in two institutes of Technical and Further Education in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The final chapter makes suggestions for priorities to improve the teaching of business English. This Field Study Report should be regarded as an exploratory attempt in choosing classroom techniques and materials for teaching listening skills to students of commerce at the Hanoi Foreign Trade College.

Abstract:
There are increasing needs for trained business persons as a result of the recent rapid development of foreign trade in Vietnam. A good command of written commercial English is one of the most important qualifications of a business person. At present the Hanoi Foreign Trade College is the only institution which is responsible for training commerce students. The teaching of writing skill in general and the teaching of commercial letter writing in particular still leave much to be desired. The writing skill of graduates of the Hanoi Foreign Trade College is far from satisfactory This Field Study Report aims at identifying the difficulties and the needs of commerce students in the Hanoi Foreign Trade College. It takes into consideration the language and learning needs of the target students in order to suggest a syllabus for the teaching of commercial letter writing to commerce students more efficiently. The Field Study Report consists of seven chapters. Chapter I provides an analysis of the teaching and learning situations at the Hanoi Foreign Trade College and problems of the teaching of commercial letter writing. Chapter 2 looks at some major theoretical problems and practical issues for Specific Purpose English syllabus design and material production for the teaching of commercial letter writing to commerce students at the Hanoi Foreign Trade College. Chapter 3 is a contrastive analysis of western commercial letters, Vietnamese commercial letters in Vietnamese and Vietnamese commercial letters in English. Chapter 4 is an analysis of the results of a survey made in 1988 to identify the needs of commerce students for commercial letters. Chapter 5 is mainly concerned with designing a communicative syllabus for the teaching of commercial letter writing to commerce students in Vietnam. Chapter 6 is the proposed syllabus for the teaching of CLW to commerce students at the HFTC, Vietnam. Chapter 7 is the conclusion. This Field Study Report should be regarded as an exploratory attempt to adopt the communicative approach in designing a syllabus for the teaching of commercial letter writing to commerce students in Vietnam.

Abstract:
As a result of the development in foreign trade in Vietnam, there is a growing need for trained business executives and business people. A good command of spoken English is one of the most important qualifications of a foreign trade executive who needs English as a means of communicating with English speaking people in various business activities. At present, the responsibility for training students of commerce mainly rests with Hanoi Foreign Trade College. English language teaching in general, and the teaching of speaking skills in particular still leave much,to be desired. The students' oral proficiency is far from satisfactory. The purpose of this report is to explore the two main problematic areas in teaching speaking skills to students of commerce in Vietnam: syllabus design and teaching methods. The report consists of four chapters. Chapter one looks at some major theoretical problems and practical issues in English for Specific Purposes teaching. Chapter two provides an analysis of the teaching and learning situations at Hanoi Foreign Trade College and problems in teaching oral skills. Chapter three is mainly concerned with designing a communicative syllabus for the teaching of speaking skills to students of commerce. Chapter four deals with the theoretical assumptions and processes involved in oral communication and discusses some classroom methods and techniques in the light of the current communicative approach. This report should be regarded as an exploratory attempt in adopting the communicative approach to teaching oral skills to students of commerce in Vietnam.

Abstract:

Students who do not yet experience the demands of balancing the dual roles or work and family anticipate the conflict that the multiple role combination may entail. Anticipated work-family conflict (AWFC) was studied amongst a sample of 962 students from the Commerce Faculty at the University of Cape 'lawn (UCT). Based on social-cognitive theory maternal employment, parental role-sharing and parental education levels were investigated as social antecedents to AWFC. Sell-efficacy to manage future work-family conflict, positive affect and negative affect were proposed as personal antecedents to AWFC. Outcome variables examined in relation to AWFC: were career-altering strategies and family-altering strategies. No significant relationship was found between social antecedents and AWFC. Self-efficacy to manage future work-family conflict and negative affect significantly predicted AWFC whilst positive affect did not predict AWFC significantly in the regression model. In addition, students who anticipate work-family conflict in their future reduce their career aspirations and the number of children they intend to have, whilst not the age at which they intend to start a family. Male students were found to have significantly higher AWFC than female students. Data was obtained through a self-report questionnaire. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:
Magister Commercii (Industrial Psychology) - MCom(IPS)
Career maturity is an essential requirement in human existence. Super (1979) identified five stages which highlight the level of maturity an individual should have achieved at a certain age. However, increasingly, it is being recognised that individuals are not at the level of career maturity where they ought to be. In order to address the matter relating to career maturity, the current research investigated the nature thereof amongst first year university students. The prevalence of specific aspects of career maturity (namely, self-information, decision-making, career information, integration of self-information and career information, and career planning) were investigated. In addition, the correlations between the aspects of career maturity and certain biographical variables such as age, gender and race were examined.

Raymond, Edwins. "Online Shopping in Haiti: An Empirical Study of Students’ Shopping Perceptions and Consumer Behavior." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32378.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate consumer behavior toward online shopping in Haiti with the findings of factors that affect whether or not they purchase online. The study showed that there is some potential for e-commerce in Haiti. However, there are many challenges, including lack of infrastructure, the low availability of credit cards, low government initiations. The sample consisted of 188 Haitian students at university level that were approached by using the “snowball” technique. Every participant made a purchase online before he received the questionnaire, and they were all above eighteen. Different questions were asked to the participants that reflected the characteristics of shopping. First, they were asked to give their frequency of online shopping transactions using a four-point Likert scale. Second, a seven-point Likert scale was used to rate their opinions about trends affecting electronic commerce, companies’ marketing approaches. Third, participants were asked to evaluate their feelings about traditional and online shopping using a nine-point bipolar scale. Finally, the Six Dimensional Achievement Motivations Scale by Jackson, Ahmed, and Heapy (1976) were used that allowed the participants to describe themselves. The results show that the participants still have a negative perception of online shopping compared to traditional shopping. Also, the study reveals that online shopping in Haiti is significantly affected by various Demographic factors like gender, income, and education. As opposed to demographics, the achievement dimensions were less related to online shopping behavior. The results show some limitations in terms of the time available to collect the data, the availability of the participants and their concerns about some questions. Also, generalization must be made carefully since the study is limited to Haitian students. The study has practical and managerial impacts, including the possible use by businesses, other researchers, and the Haitian government. The results of the study could be further used by researchers to conduct future studies in the same field.

Thesis, Högskolan i Borås, Akademin för textil, teknik och ekonomi, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hb:diva-10195.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis aims to investigate students’ willingness to share customer data in the fashion e-commerce. Special attention is given to the way trust, benefits and law regulations are discussed in this context. An inductive approach was applied utilizing focus group discussions. The goal of the empirical study was to gain insights in the way students argue about customer data and which feelings are involved. The study highlights findings in the key areas trust, benefits and law regulations. A shift of customer trust from brands to recommendations could be observed. In terms of benefits, focus group participants tend to choose value exchange over traditional rewards. Findings regarding law regulations suggest that the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union can provide control of customer data but no security. Furthermore, consumer behavior plays an important role when it comes to data sharing attitudes. The experiences and observations of the participants may not be applicable to other studies. Furthermore, the study findings are bounded to the European Union. The findings suggest that trust, benefits and law regulations can influence students’ willingness to share customer data in the fashion e-commerce. The study is unique of its kind as it investigates the willingness to share customer data with the focus on students and fashion e-commerce. Hence, this research paper fills a gap in scientific literature and is valuable for businesses operating in the fashion e-commerce.

Abstract:

This study examined the extent to which participation in the University of Cape Town's Commerce Education Development Unit (CEDU) extended programme is related to the presence of social psychological graduate attributes in second and third year CEDU students ( n = 104) . This study used second and third year mainstream students as a comparison group (n = 175) as they are assumed to have the required graduate attribute levels for academic success. Data was gathered through a questionnaire using Likert - type scales. A series of analyses were then conducted to test the hypothesis and sub - hypotheses. The main results revealed that after participating in the CEDU extended programme for up to three years, CEDU students have the same perceived levels of the measured graduate attributes as students in mainstream programmes, after the possible effects of three covariates have been taken into account. This study highlights the complexity of developing graduate attributes in previously disadvantaged students of colour in a South African context. The findings of this study provide a basis for future research into the development of graduate attributes in previously disadvantaged students as an antecedent of academic success and employability.

Hill, T. (Tanya). "Student perceptions of a self-assessment environment." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/41603.

Full text
Abstract:
Formal assessment in education focuses on summative assessment in the form of grade allocation. This has limitations on the learning process for students. Formative assessment should also be incorporated into learning as an integral part as it offers many benefits. Reflective learning in the form of self-assessment is central to the process of formative assessment. Students, however, tend not to engage in the process of self-assessment. This skill can be developed by educators in an educational setting, but educators tend not to create an environment in which students can self-assess. The study explored students’ perceptions of the self-assessment process once they had been exposed to it over a period of time in a facilitated environment. This encouraged them to engage in the process and develop the skill of self-assessment. The research method was exploratory in nature and was conducted by means of a design experiment in which students were encouraged to self-assess on three occasions during the 2012 academic year. Data was then collected from the students by means of a structured survey. The results of this study indicated that students tended not to self-assess if not encouraged to do so. However, once given the opportunity to do so in an environment which supported it, students were positive about the process of self-assessment. They believed that it would improve their overall academic performance and indicated that they would continue to apply self-assessment to their studies in future. This study concluded that students were positive about self-assessment and that they applied it accurately and in a meaningful manner to their studies in an environment which supported it.

Zhu, Dan. "Managerial sex role stereotyping among Chinese students in New Zealand." Diss., Lincoln University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10182/822.

Full text
Abstract:
The management literature in gender issues argues that in spite of the progress made in the last few decades, women still face difficulties in being accepted and recognised as managers because the manager’s role has been perceived as masculine. Gender stereotypes, hence, continue to become a barrier to women’s access to top management position. This study examines the perceptions of the relationship between sex role stereotypes and the perceived characteristics necessary for managerial success among Chinese students in New Zealand. The study sample consisted of 94 male Chinese students and 119 female Chinese students studying in New Zealand. In order to allow for cross-cultural comparisons, this study used a direct replication the Schein Descriptive Index (SDI) from previous study (Schein & Mueller, 1992). The male and female perceptions on the relationship between sex role stereotypes and characteristics were analysed separately. The results revealed that both male and female Chinese students in New Zealand perceive that successful middle managers possess characteristics, attitudes and temperaments more commonly ascribed to men than to women in general. In addition, the results were compared with previous studies conducted in China and Japan, New Zealand, America, Britain, Canada, and Germany. Our findings conclude that Asian people are worse than Western people in respect to managerial sex role stereotyping, particularly, Chinese males who show a very strong degree of managerial gender stereotyping. Multiple discriminant analysis was used to discriminate the relationship between men, women and middle managers on 92 items from the survey questionnaire. The analysis resulted in two separate canonical functions which distinguished between three groups women, men and managers).

Mohd, Zahari M. S. "A study of factors moderating Malaysian hospitality students selection of tertiary education institutions, programme and subsequent career intentions." Lincoln University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10182/1577.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the moderating variables that influence a student's decisions to enter into a hospitality management programme and subsequently pursue a career in the hospitality industry. It also examines how these factors are implicated in or modify a student's career commitment over time. The sample includes students enrolling in various three year (6 semester) diploma and undergraduate programme offered by Malaysian hospitality institutions of higher learning over the academic years of 2002- 2003. This includes four public or government funded institutions with several branch campuses, and six private institutions. Predominantly the data for this study based are on self completion questionnaires with some additional insight particularly about respondents' direction of industry employment provided by means of qualitative responses. The initial comparisons are made between students in the public and private institutions and these are followed by an extensive series of analyses examining the differences and similarities of respondents' rating in the two rounds of data collection with reference to a range of independent variables. Also reported are how these ratings change over time. Significant differences were found in terms of parental socio-economic background between students who enrolled in the private and those in the public hospitality institutions. Nevertheless, for the key issues as to whether parental backgrounds lead to differences in respondents' attitudes and values about a career in hospitality this was not seen as an influencing determinant for both institutions. Further, the independent variables of gender, ethnicity, religion and geographical upbringing, secondary school background and prior experience do not clearly show causation of how students reports their views about the dimensions investigated in this study. In fact, students' levels of intention and commitment towards career are apparently not directly related to these independent variables. However, despite no clear pre-tertiary education indicators of likely disaffection being identified, a very clear picture emerged in this study that there is a declining sentiment among Malaysian hospitality students towards employment in the hospitality industry and reduced intention to pursue such a career. These weakened employment intentions are formed during the educational programme and are probably at least partially a result of the maturation process with varying consequences and implications for the students, hospitality institutions, industry and the government.

Lam, Yuet Ching Jeanne. "The student experience of a blended learning accounting course : a case study in Hong Kong." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/31983/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research is an inquiry into students’ learning experiences within a blended learning Accounting course in a sub-degree programme at a university in Hong Kong. In this course, the students were required to attend face-to-face classes and to participate in learning activities in the online platform. A case study research approach was adopted that involved 2 classes of 2 teachers and 80 students. Qualitative data were generated through classroom observations, online participation observations, student learning logs and reflections, student focus group interviews, student individual interviews, individual teacher interviews and an individual interview with the course leader. Thematic data analysis was used and a Community of Inquiry (CoI) model was used as a theoretical framework. The analysis showed that the students engaged in learning by integrating traditional and online learning activities and many of these were located within the social, cognitive and teaching presences within the CoI model. However, the students were found to be involved actively in non-prescribed activities that included the use of social network applications. The active learning exploration driven by students’ intrinsic motivation and the consequent collaborative learning among students using social media tools were not reflected in the CoI model. Hence, a new element of autonomy is proposed as an addition to the framework, to reveal the link of autonomous learning to the learning community. By extending the CoI framework, the contribution of this research is to provide a holistic model for the successful design and implementation of blended learning in higher education institutions.

Bayley, Trevor C. R. "Enhancing student engagement in information systems education : a longitudinal case study from a Sino-Foreign university." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2017. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/43029/.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis describes five years of research on an undergraduate accounting information systems module at the China campus of Nottingham University Business School. The central research question is ‘How can small group interactions be designed to improve student engagement in information systems education?’. To this end, an interpretive philosophical paradigm is adopted to address three research questions which are explored in distinct phases: In the first phase a grounded approach is taken to address the question - What influences engagement in small group interactions? The second phase takes the themes identified in the first phase and addresses the question - What strategies might be adopted to address these influences? In the third and final phase, a longitudinal study is conducted, in which the strategies identified in the second phase are then applied, in 3 cycles of action research, addressing the question – How, why and what would be good practice in implementing such strategies? This research finds 36 themes that influence engagement in small group interactions, strategies are then identified to address those themes and those within the scope of control of the researcher are tested. This research confirms that the findings in the extant literature relating to mainland Chinese undergraduate student engagement, in Western undergraduate programmes overseas, also apply to such programmes conducted in the mainland Chinese context. In addition a sense of student empowerment over influencing pedagogy to suit preference in terms of classroom environment, interaction timing, second language use, and tutor focus is found. Among the strategies tested, a problem-based group project, set within a familiar context and informed by an evidence-based design approach, which values the opinion and experience of the student as designer of the proposed problem solution, was found to be the most effective in promoting early engagement in the desired learning process. This study supports the argument that case study approaches, where those studies are set in unfamiliar contexts, may not be best suited for undergraduate programmes due to their inherent contextual uncertainties. This research finds that, through adopting an evidence-based approach to research for such group projects, student evaluation of their own experience and insights changes positively, enabling more rounded and reflective critical argument and decision-making. This work may be seen to contribute to fill gaps both in evidence from practice and in the body of ‘scientific’ evidence in respect of the following contexts, such gaps having been identified by the cited authors as follows: Theoretical contributions 1. Research into the area of Chinese student engagement in Western educational settings e.g. Li and Campbell (2008). 2. Qualitative research methods in general and the adaptation of western approaches to the Chinese context e.g. Watkins-Mathys (2007). 3. Literature relating to evidence-based design in teaching and learning e.g. Groccia and Buskist (2011), Rousseau and Mc Carthy (2007), Wastell (2011) and Ahmadi et al. (2012). 4. Literature relating to alignment of the expectation gap between tutors and students in cross-cultural settings e.g. Zhou et al. (2008). 5. Literature relating to evidence-based design in information systems and accounting literature e.g. Marr (2009), Baskerville (2011), Wastell (2011). Practical contributions 6. The call for case studies that “lionise” evidence-based design and avoid the contextual challenges of [case study] approaches e.g. Starkey and Tempest (2009) and Wastell (2011). 7. Further evidence from the process of adapting British teaching and learning practices for use in the Chinese undergraduate context (Zhou et al., 2008). 8. Further evidence to inform both student/staff induction processes and the body of research on the design of teaching and learning practices at NUBS in China e.g. Waters (2007).

Kao, Tzu-Hui. "University student satisfaction: an empirical analysis." Lincoln University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10182/1833.

Full text
Abstract:
New Zealand's tertiary education sector has experienced political reform, social changes, economic changes and globalisation in the last two decades, and the sector has become more internationally competitive. DeShields, Kara, and Kaynak (2005) recommended that management of higher education should apply a market-oriented approach to sustain a competitive advantage. Therefore, understanding and managing students' satisfaction and their perceptions of service quality is important for university management if they are to design and implement a market-oriented approach. The purpose of this research is to gain an empirical understanding of students' overall satisfaction in a university in New Zealand's higher education sector. A hierarchal model is used as a framework for the analysis. Fifteen hypotheses are formulated and tested to identify the dimensions of service quality as perceived by university students, to examine the relationship between students' overall satisfaction with influential factors such as tuition fees (price) and the university's image, and to determine the impact of students' overall satisfaction on favourable future behavioural intentions. In addition, students' perceptions of these constructs are compared using demographic factors such as gender, age, and ethnicity. The findings of the study are based on the analysis of a sample of 223 students studying at Lincoln University. Support is found for the use of a hierarchical model and the primary dimensions; Interaction Quality, Physical Environment Quality, and Outcome Quality, as broad dimensions of service quality. Ten sub-dimensions of service quality, as perceived by students, are identified. These are: Academic Staff, Administration Staff, Academic Staff Availability, Course Content, Library, Physically Appealing, Social Factors, Personal Development, Academic Development, and Career Opportunities. The results indicate that each of the primary dimensions vary in terms of their importance to overall perceived service quality, as do the sub-dimensions to the primary dimensions. In addition, the statistical results support a relationship between service quality and price; service quality, image, and satisfaction; and satisfaction and favourable future behavioural intentions. However, there is no statistical support for a relationship between price and satisfaction. The results also suggest that students' perceptions of the constructs are primarily influenced by their ethnicity and year of study. The results of the analysis contribute to the service marketing theory by providing an empirically based insight into the satisfaction and service quality constructs in the New Zealand higher education sector. The study also provides an analytical framework for understanding the effects of the three primary dimensions on service quality and the effects of service quality on constructs including price, image, satisfaction, and favourable future behavioural intentions. This study will assist management of higher education to develop and implement a market-oriented service strategy in order to achieve a high quality of service, enhance students' level of satisfaction and create favourable future behavioural intentions.

Abstract:
E-commerce is today a very attractive market with growth prospects and opportunities for new companies to establish themselves and start operations. Since the establishment of Internet and the evolution of how Internet is used today, there has been an increasing possibility for consumer’s to buy products online. The more expanding E-commerce business today makes companies and entrepenuers eager to establish markets online. There is though a opportunity with the expanding of E-commerce today and that is for companies to investigate how consumer’s values the risks of shopping online. This opportunity is something that companies should take in care before starting an E-commerce market. This study aims to identify consumers' perceived risk in purchasing decisions in relation to E-commerce. The study is intended to give a broader perspective to be helpful for companies who are in business with e-commerce or supposed to conduct and begin sales activities through Ecommerce. This will be achieved by showing which factors consumers find to be most affecting to their uncertainty and risk when buying online. The survey methodology used in this study was a quantitative method where we deduced hypotheses to ensure on previous research and theories that the results of our investigation was consistent with what we concuded in our study. To come up with the answers we received, we used questionnaires in which respondents were asked to answer on a seven-point scale how they felt the risk of shopping online today. The results of this study shows us that consumer’s perceived risk will grow if the purchase is of an high engagement product, we can also conclude that there will be a decline in perceived risk if the websites have good design, user friendly navigation, clear information about consumer’s warranty and right of return.

Abstract:
The thesis primarily aims to demonstrate the relevance of corporate marketing framework to consumers. Therefore, across two different articles we explore the concept of corporate marketing in areas which hold considerable interest among academicians i.e. consumer emotions and consumer relationships. The first article, deals with the implications of corporate brands on consumer's emotional experiences. The study demonstrates that conceptual differences between corporate and product brands have important and meaningful differences on consumer's emotional and behavioral reactions. In the second article, we focus on consumer's identification relationship with companies. This research elaborates the mechanisms of identity-based commitment and its effect on consumer responses to new company initiatives. The proposed two-tiered, identification-based commitment model explains both positive and negative consumer reactions, an insight missing from prior studies. Finally, the thesis includes a 3rd article which discusses a rather different issue. As the empirical studies in the first two articles use “students” as participants therefore, our third article focuses on the usage of student sample in marketing research. This article explores the underlying argument on the usage of student sample; problems associated with such studies, and identify best practices in French marketing research

Abstract:
The evolution and growth of e-commerce has had a major impact in the daily living for the past few years [28]. It has brought and introduced new ways of trading and doing business. It enabled customers to negotiate business deals with companies and come into agreement about the services and goods to be purchased; and even come to the finalization and conclusion of the deals without ever being in the same place or meeting during all those negotiations. The e-commerce systems target the desktop or personal computers (PC s) as the hardware platform for clients. With all such good features and benefits e-commerce has, there is, to mention the least, one limitation that it has and that is mobility . People would still want to engage themselves in business deals whilst mobile. Mobile commerce or m-commerce appears into the scene to complete the journey started by e-commerce, thus it is seen as an extension of e-commerce [21]. Many services have migrated from the traditional e-commerce to m-commerce and that has allowed customers and clients to have access to their services whilst mobile or in motion. The lack of mobility in students services is being seen as a hassle and a problem by some students as they are forced to be fixed in one point at a time in order to get their services. The dissertation aims at addressing the service-related problems students encounter due to the lack of mobility in the University campus. It intends to develop a prototype called Open Mobile Student Portal that would demonstrate how some of the student services could be rendered in the mobile environment. The students could be able to get their balance or fees statements via their cell phones instead of having to go to the finance department in order to get their balance statement. Also, some library services could be rendered in the mobile environment so as to enable students to search for books in the library databases and book such books using their cell phones.

Abstract:
Background and Aim: South Africa is currently experiencing serious challenges relating to youth and graduate unemployment. Some of the reasons cited for t his problem are the inability of Higher Education to produce graduates that meet employer needs. As a result there is a great need for higher education institutions (HEIs) to develop approaches to address the issue of graduate employability skills. The main aim of this study is to investigate the perceptions of desirable graduate workplace skills for commerce graduates. Method: A cross-sectional research design was followed with data collected by means of surveys. The survey drew responses regarding the topic from a broad cross-section of respondents at one point in time, making the approach practical and reasonable for pursuing the exploratory and descriptive aims of the study. A sample of 244 final year students, 94 postgraduates and 21 academics participated in this study. Results: The research findings indicated that graduate employability is significantly dependent on the soft and technical skills required in the workplace and that the university does provide some of the skills as part of its commerce programmes. The following specific results were obtained: • The results showed that in general all three groups of respondents perceived that the higher education institutions equipped them to a large extent with the soft skills needed in the workplace. The findings indicated that the skills which final year students perceive to be the most important are not as the same at the one rated most important by academics and postgraduates. • The findings reflected a significant gap between current soft skills training and the desirable soft skills • Based on the study findings, the three stakeholders mentioned one common technical skill (computer literacy) which they gained throughout their studies • Generally, results showed that undergraduates, postgraduates and academics perceive that students have gained some technical skills during their studies which will prepare them to a large extend for employability • The respondent's results from chapter 5 indicated that there is a great need for HEis to provide technical skills training relevant to one's career that will help graduates to be prepared for the workplace • Based on the study find ings from chapter 5, the results showed a high need for WIL programme to be part of the undergraduate student's curriculum Practice Relevance: Studies in the related field of graduate employability skills have been previously conducted by different researchers globally. Despite the previous studies, the topic "perceptions of desirable graduate workplace skills for commerce graduates" have not been researched before. The study attempts to identify if Higher Education Institutions provide graduates with the necessary soft and technical skills required to enhance their employability. This study contributes to the literature where the benefits of conducting it can be experienced by students, HEis, employers and the country in general through determining what skills are required for being employable.

Abstract:
Choice (decision-making) discourse processes are central to education and to collaborative critical thinking, and can be analyzed using a Systemic Functional Linguistics and a Knowledge Structures perspective. While their analysis has been relatively neglected, they are an important aspect of discourse development and second language learning. EBay is one of many recent developments in computer-mediated, multimodal (mulitiliteracies) software. Like many, it uses English as a medium of international communication. As software for online bidding and shopping, it would seem likely to require choice discourse processes when used collaboratively by two or more users. This thesis examined discourse by pairs of international students using eBay collaboratively. It asked: "When students use eBay, do they engage in episodes of choice more than they do during casual conversation?" and "Did their eBay interactions show expected linguistic features of choice discourse more frequently than their casual conversations?" Results of this exploratory study throws light on the nature and analysis of choice discourse processes, language features and the value of computer software like eBay for developing the discourse of choice. The findings of the study demonstrated that eBay had a relatively high use of choice discourse. Interactive simulated shopping online allowed the students to use their multiliteracies and critical thinking skills which in turn would assist them in integrating into their chosen professional or academic community more independently.

Abstract:
With the increasing diversity of students attending University, there is a growing interest in the factors predicting academic performance. A large number of students who enter University do not continue beyond the first year of study. Academics seek explanations, whereas University administrators desire to manage their student enrolments by reducing failure rates. Decision on admissions to University and placement into University courses are usually based on the results of achievement (as in secondary school exams) and/or selection tests. About half of the first year students in the Faculty of Commerce at the University of the Witwatersrand, do not continue to their second year. The drop out rate of first year students in this Faculty reported to range from roughly 24% to 32%. In this report an attempt is made to identify factors which affect the students’ performance during the first year. The purpose of this report is to use a CHAID analysis to find the importance of some predictors and interactions between them as well as fitting a Multinomial Logistic Regression model to the same data. This report presents the important predictors from the statistical analyses. The analyses were done on the first year students in the Faculty of Commerce, University of the Witwatersrand from 2003 to 2006. Previous Institution Type, Gender, Age, Matriculation Aggregate, First year performance and Matriculation courses (Accountancy, Biology, English, History, Mathematics and Physical Science) were used as predictor variables. The CHAID analyses indicated that Matriculation Aggregate is the most important predictor, whereas Previous Institution Type, Age, Accountancy, English and Physical Science are also important predictors. Several of these variables interact with it. In the Multinomial Logistic Regression analysis, Age, Aggregate, Accountancy, English, Mathematics and Physical Science are the significant predictors. Most of these variables were significant as variables interacting with some of these variables. Age is the only single variable significant on its own in these models.

Abstract:
Submitted in fulfillment of the academic requirements for the Master of Technology in Business Administration, Durban University of Technology, 2017.
This study investigated the concept of entrepreneurial intent within a South African Higher Education (HE) context using a sample of final year commerce students at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). The backdrop of this is within growing calls for universities to be located more within the ideal and agenda of generating future entrepreneurs for the economy. Further, arguments are made that graduates within South African Higher Education (HE) may possess the necessary theoretical knowledge but fall short concerning coming up with innovations that are responsive to the changing and diverse labour market. Entrepreneurship, thus, emerges as a possible panacea to the challenges affecting HE in South Africa. The aim of the research was to investigate factors that influence a student’s entrepreneurial intent within a South African HE context. A quantitative survey design was implemented amongst a sample of 250 respondents studying at the DUT. Correlation and regression analysis were used to test relationships between variables. The findings show a positive relationship to exist between individual risk taking propensity and variables such as a) subjective norms; b) perceived behavioural control; c) proactive personality; d) entrepreneurial education and e) student attitude towards entrepreneurial education and intentions. The findings provide a useful precursor to encouraging entrepreneurial efforts within HE in South Africa. Practitioners can use the findings of this work to come up with interventions that promote the development of an entrepreneurial culture within the South African context, especially using a vulnerable yet important cohort within the youth of the country.

Abstract:
This study examines the online shopping behaviour of 142 international university students (IUSs) within the context of a modified version of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Results indicate that perceived entertainment outweighs the impact of perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived self-efficacy (PSE) on attitude towards online shopping (ATT). Perceived risk (PR) was not related to ATT and ATT and behavioural intentions (BI) did not influence actual behaviour. Experience was strongly related to ATT, but demographics have little influence on TAM measures. Entertainment and usefulness were the primary motives for IUSs to shop online. The findings of this study could help universities and e-retailers develop guidelines to ensure a safe and attractive e-shopping experience for IUSs.

In the recent years, E-commerce is a phenomenon that is growing rapidly and continues to grow exponentially in the developing countries. In this globalized world, E-commerce has become an important channel for conducting business. Combining internet and the textile industry, two factors that separately gave place to a growing economy, seems to be not only a strategy for companies to maximize their profitability but also a way to boost the Taiwanese economy. The study was focused on the intention of Taiwanese students to purchase apparel online using the combined Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model by implementing a quantitative paper questionnaire was distributed to 300 Taiwanese respondents who have Internet access. Moderation Analysis was used to explain the respondents’ profiles and Descriptive Analysis, The attitudes measured were trust, perceived ease of use and usefulness. The subjective norm variables measured were family, friends and celebrities. Finally, the perceived Behavioral Control variables measured were self-efficacy and controllability. All the previous were tested by using Explanatory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis and the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was applied to assess reliability, validity and normality of the model and analyze hypotheses in this research. Then Multiple-Group analysis was used in order to analyze the moderating effect of gender. The results show that attitudes, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control have an influence toward the intention to purchase apparel online. However, attitudes seem to be the most important factor influencing the intention to purchase apparel online. Regarding gender influence, for the female group, it is important to make them feel that they are in control of the situation by giving them more choices. This research can be useful to understand important aspects that lead to the implementation of strategies to sell apparel products to young generations in Taiwan

Abstract:
Universities should strive to educate students by applying new learning environments where students are given the opportunity to explore the world of education by the use of mobile devices. These technologies and mobile devices are already second nature to them and applying these devices in a learning environment will improve the students’ learning experience. It is sensible to make use of these new technologies to get students attention, since students will find learning interesting and more enjoyable. Students’ attitude towards a mobile learning environment and learning with mobile devices has already received much attention in existing literature. This study aimed to determine whether South African, University students will welcome the use of mobile devices during their studies, especially in the field of Taxation. The study also focussed on students’ attitudes towards using e-books instead of the hardcopy textbooks during their studies and during open-book assessments. This longitudinal study made use of two questionnaires to obtain the feedback on students’ perception on what they believe mobile learning to be, their acceptance and willingness to engage with a mobile learning environment and to determine whether their attitudes towards mobile learning have change over two academic years. Furthermore, statistical analysis of the data was done to determine whether a significant difference exists between the responses between male and female students. The results indicated that more males are interested in using mobile technologies for educational purposes, however, it is not significant. It was concluded that students, when given the opportunity, are interested to engage with a mobile learning environment. It was lastly concluded that no significant change in acceptance and willingness of engaging with a mobile learning environment exists over two academic years.

The Model of Behavior Intentions for College Students Using Internet to Participate in the School Affairs: A Study Case of China College of Marine Technology and Commerce The purpose of this study is to discuss the behavior model of college students using Internet to participate in the school affairs. According to the conceptual model of “uses and gratifications”, the theoretical model of “using motivation à involvement à contentment à the willingness for more participation” is logically deduced. In this current study, we adopt the questionnaire investigation method and the analyzed unit is the school website of China College of Marine Technology and Commerce. This study adopts the LISREL analysis method to examine the measurement model and structure model. As the result, we discover that: 1. The college students’ behavior model of participating in the school affairs through Internet is supported by students; 2. With the difference of the using motivation, the involvement degree of the users to the website also varies accordingly; 3.The contentment after using the information system will also influence their willingness for more participation; 4. When participating in school affairs through Internet, the function that is mostly used by college students is the search engine; 5. The behavior model varies with the gender.

Jones, Puangchompoo. "Understanding the International Students' Innovation Decision Process with Particular Reference to International Higher Education Service in Australia and in Thailand." 2006. http://eprints.vu.edu.au/518/1/518contents.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focuses on the international higher education service in i)Australia as one of the leaders in this service and ii) Thailand as an eastern developing country that has potential to offer this service. However, as a new country offering this service, Thailand lacks experience of operating it in the world market. Therefore, it is necessary to learn from a leading country, which has more experience, like Australia. This study aims to i) identify the factors affecting international students in coming to study at HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) in Thailand and in Australia (Melbourne), ii) explore how these factors influence each stage in the model of "International Students' Innovation Decision Process" in offering the international higher education service of Thailand and Australia (Melbourne), iii) present the implications of the results of this study with regard to marketing of the international higher education service by Thailand, iv) reveal how international higher education service is perceived by persons who are involved with this area in Thailand/Australia (Melbourne) and v) Propose practical directions for the international higher education service of Thailand by adapting the useful experiences of Australia (Melbourne). When international students have studied in their home countries, the international higher education service offered by other countries is a 'new' service to them. This view is therefore different to that taken by previous studies in similar areas. Therefore, the model in this study of 'the International Students' Innovation Decision Process' was developed in order to examine the factors affecting international students when making a decision to study abroad in Thailand and Australia. It was also developed to explore their experiences when they were studying at Higher Education Institutions: HEIs in both countries. The results of the study including the findings of Australia's experiences in offering the international higher education service will be used to assist Thailand in offering a high quality international higher education service. v In this study both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. The qualitative component included in-depth interviews with persons involved in the international higher education service in Thailand and Australia. The quantitative component involved a questionnaire survey which was designed to investigate factors affecting international students when making a decision to enrol, and when studying at HEIs in Thailand and Australia. The survey of international students in both countries was used to investigate 'the International Students' Innovation Decision Process. It incorporated five groups of factors; sources of information, HEI characteristics, country characteristics, benefits and risks of study abroad. Seventeen (17) HEIs and one (1) government department in Thailand and four (4) HEIs in Australia (Melbourne) were used for this study. Results of the in-depth interviews indicated that the demand by international students for study abroad in Thailand and Australia is still high. It was found in both countries that the international higher education service offers major benefits including cultural exchange as well as financial benefits. Strategies for offering this service that have been successful in Australia, for example use of reliable private agents, were identified and this could be utilised by HEIs in Thailand when offering the international higher education service to prospective international students. Findings of the survey with international students in both countries of this study identified 4 stages in 'the International Students' Innovation Decision Process' Knowledge Stage: building up the knowledge base Persuasion and Decision Stage: assessment and decision activities - Implementation Stage: reassessment activities - Confirmation/Disconfirmation Stage: confirmation/disconfirmation decision The international students' knowledge about study abroad in Thailand and Australia was found to be likely increased by word of mouth communication from acquaintances and also from the internet. Sponsors, parents and friends were likely to be influential vi sources of information when international students were making a decision to enrol at HEIs in both countries. HEI characteristics such as standard of courses and recognition of qualification, country characteristics, for example reasonable cost of living, were factors that influenced international students when making a decision to enrol at HEIs in both countries. High benefits and perceived risks of study abroad influenced international students when making a decision to enrol at HEIs in both countries. The results indicated that expectations of international students in both countries expectations were not met for all HEI and country characteristics once they were studying at HEIs in the destination country. For international students in Thailand, perceptions of the benefits of study abroad did not change, whereas in Australia perceptions of the benefits of study abroad such as 'learn English with native speakers' decreased. However, international students' perceptions of risks of study abroad changed very little in both countries. Further, the majority of international students in both countries intended to complete their study (at the confirmation/disconfirmation stage) in the destination country. This was the final stage of 'the International Students' Innovation Decision Process'. The international higher education service in this study is defined as a 'new' service (an innovation) for international students, who have already made a decision to enrol at HEIs in other countries. In order to examine the international higher education service as a 'new' service for international students who look for a place to study abroad, Rogers' (1995) innovation decision process was an effective model to utilise and adapt to examine international student perceptions and their experiences of the international higher education service in Thailand/Australia in each stage of 'the International Students' Innovation Decision Process' model. Moreover this model is also expected that this model will be helpful for future researchers who are interested in conducting research in similar areas particularly for research in developing countries that wish to offer international higher education service.

英文摘要 The purpose of this study was to survey and analyze the possible factors that influenced The National Changhua Senior School of Commerce students’ present-time participation of leisure activities, factors of constraints, mental and physical health. Questionnaires survey was the way for material gathering of this study; the students in National Changhua Senior School of Commerce were the major targets; and the samples were chosen according to 600 questionnaires with the return of 563 valid questionnaires. Those valid questionnaires were analyzed in the statistical methods, description statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’ product-moment correlation and stepwise multiple regression. The important results were as following: 1. According to all kinds of activities, the top leisure activities that the students in National Changhua Senior School of Commerce usually participated in were: surfing the net, watching TV, chatting, listening to music and reading the newspapers and magazines. According to types of leisure activities, most students participated in knowledge activities, then entertainment and social activities. Art activities had low proportion. 2. Personal factors were the important hindrance for students. According to the study, interest, personality, contest and fare were the reasons for students not participating in leisure activities. 3. According to the study, mental and physical health had the average of 2.7. We can know that mental and physical health didn’t have obvious divergence. 4. According to the different sex background, there was obvious divergence in physics, knowledge, entrainment and mental and physical health. 5. According to the different grade background, grade 1 had more interested in physics, entrainment and art than grade 3. Grad 3 had more interested in recreational resources and personal factors than grand 1. 6. According to Pearson’ product-moment correlation, there was obvious right connection between school factors, mental and physical health and art. Besides, physics activities like playing ball; swimming, climbing and fishing were not influenced by other factors. Students still had interested in leisure activities. 7. The study was analyzed by stepwise regression. According to this way, we could find that art and physics had high explanation with 3.3%. Art could be used to predict physiological health effectively with 1.8% of total variance. Physics could be used to predict physiological health effectively with 1.5% of total variance. The above results have been discussed in the thesis and some further suggestions are made as well. Key words: leisure activities, leisure obstacles, leisure participation, well-Being

This study compared the differences of physical fitness performances between new immigrants and local students using exercise habit questionnaire and physical fitness tests obtained from students of National Yujing Senior Vocational High School. Forty new immigrants and 105 local students were chosen for the study. The results indicated both new immigrants and local students did not exercise on a regular basis. Only 14% exercise regularly. It is far less than that of Taiwanese’s regular excise. The t-test results also indicated there was no significant difference in terms of physical fitness performance between these two groups. The Pearson’s correlation coefficients indicated both low correlation between exercise habits and physical fitness performances. The Pearson’s correlation coefficients showed positive correlation between academic performances and physical fitness performances. It is recommended that to enforce exercise on a regular basis for every student can improve their physical performances.
