Saunders, Louise M. "The environmental concern of commerce students -a survey." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Environmental Science, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/10396.

Full text
Abstract:
The evolution of attitudes towards the environment has culminated in the entrenchment of environmental concern as a characteristic of Western society. Overseas research has found young, well educated, urban individuals are most likely to express concern for the environment. However, the features of environmentally concerned New Zealanders have largely failed to attract the attention of researchers. In a sample of University of Canterbury Commerce students, aspects of environmental concern, and salient issues, were identified. As expected, individuals raised in urban centres were more likely to express environmental concern, although the expected influence of age and education were not observed. Women were more concerned about the environment, as were New Zealand-raised and New Zealand-ethnic respondents. It was concluded that the environmental concern of this population has many similarities to populations in other Western nations in the salience of issues, the issues of concern, and the levels of concern shown. As the respondents in this study were not representative of the New Zealand public, the suggestions for further research focus on the need to investigate environmental concern in a representative sample. A need was also suggested for research into areas of specific concerns, actual behaviour, commitment, and knowledge in the New Zealand population.

Abstract:
There is a great need for competent teaching of Business English in tertiary institutions in Vietnam. At the Hanoi Foreign Trade College (HFTC) alone, about 150 students per year seek training to equip them to work in export and import organizations, banks for foreign trade and customs departments. In teaching such students, one problem is the provision of interesting and relevant materials. This study addresses the question of selection of materials and techniques for teaching business English listening skills. This Field Study Report consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 describes the purposes and aims of study, the background to this study, dealing with students, the teaching and the curriculum. Chapter 2 looks at the general theory about listening and in particular listening in business. The chapter also describes listening requirements for business graduates from the HFTC. Chapter 3 discusses criteria for selection of textbooks for language teaching in general and for teaching listening skills in business English in particular. Chapter 4 surveys the teaching of business English in two institutes of Technical and Further Education in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The final chapter makes suggestions for priorities to improve the teaching of business English. This Field Study Report should be regarded as an exploratory attempt in choosing classroom techniques and materials for teaching listening skills to students of commerce at the Hanoi Foreign Trade College.

Abstract:
There are increasing needs for trained business persons as a result of the recent rapid development of foreign trade in Vietnam. A good command of written commercial English is one of the most important qualifications of a business person. At present the Hanoi Foreign Trade College is the only institution which is responsible for training commerce students. The teaching of writing skill in general and the teaching of commercial letter writing in particular still leave much to be desired. The writing skill of graduates of the Hanoi Foreign Trade College is far from satisfactory This Field Study Report aims at identifying the difficulties and the needs of commerce students in the Hanoi Foreign Trade College. It takes into consideration the language and learning needs of the target students in order to suggest a syllabus for the teaching of commercial letter writing to commerce students more efficiently. The Field Study Report consists of seven chapters. Chapter I provides an analysis of the teaching and learning situations at the Hanoi Foreign Trade College and problems of the teaching of commercial letter writing. Chapter 2 looks at some major theoretical problems and practical issues for Specific Purpose English syllabus design and material production for the teaching of commercial letter writing to commerce students at the Hanoi Foreign Trade College. Chapter 3 is a contrastive analysis of western commercial letters, Vietnamese commercial letters in Vietnamese and Vietnamese commercial letters in English. Chapter 4 is an analysis of the results of a survey made in 1988 to identify the needs of commerce students for commercial letters. Chapter 5 is mainly concerned with designing a communicative syllabus for the teaching of commercial letter writing to commerce students in Vietnam. Chapter 6 is the proposed syllabus for the teaching of CLW to commerce students at the HFTC, Vietnam. Chapter 7 is the conclusion. This Field Study Report should be regarded as an exploratory attempt to adopt the communicative approach in designing a syllabus for the teaching of commercial letter writing to commerce students in Vietnam.

Abstract:
As a result of the development in foreign trade in Vietnam, there is a growing need for trained business executives and business people. A good command of spoken English is one of the most important qualifications of a foreign trade executive who needs English as a means of communicating with English speaking people in various business activities. At present, the responsibility for training students of commerce mainly rests with Hanoi Foreign Trade College. English language teaching in general, and the teaching of speaking skills in particular still leave much,to be desired. The students' oral proficiency is far from satisfactory. The purpose of this report is to explore the two main problematic areas in teaching speaking skills to students of commerce in Vietnam: syllabus design and teaching methods. The report consists of four chapters. Chapter one looks at some major theoretical problems and practical issues in English for Specific Purposes teaching. Chapter two provides an analysis of the teaching and learning situations at Hanoi Foreign Trade College and problems in teaching oral skills. Chapter three is mainly concerned with designing a communicative syllabus for the teaching of speaking skills to students of commerce. Chapter four deals with the theoretical assumptions and processes involved in oral communication and discusses some classroom methods and techniques in the light of the current communicative approach. Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 41-43).
Students who do not yet experience the demands of balancing the dual roles or work and family anticipate the conflict that the multiple role combination may entail. Anticipated work-family conflict (AWFC) was studied amongst a sample of 962 students from the Commerce Faculty at the University of Cape 'lawn (UCT). Based on social-cognitive theory maternal employment, parental role-sharing and parental education levels were investigated as social antecedents to AWFC. Sell-efficacy to manage future work-family conflict, positive affect and negative affect were proposed as personal antecedents to AWFC. Outcome variables examined in relation to AWFC: were career-altering strategies and family-altering strategies. No significant relationship was found between social antecedents and AWFC. Self-efficacy to manage future work-family conflict and negative affect significantly predicted AWFC whilst positive affect did not predict AWFC significantly in the regression model. In addition, students who anticipate work-family conflict in their future reduce their career aspirations and the number of children they intend to have, whilst not the age at which they intend to start a family. Male students were found to have significantly higher AWFC than female students. Data was obtained through a self-report questionnaire. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:

Career maturity is an essential requirement in human existence. Super (1979) identified five stages which highlight the level of maturity an individual should have achieved at a certain age. However, increasingly, it is being recognised that individuals are not at the level of career maturity where they ought to be. In order to address the matter relating to career maturity, the current research investigated the nature thereof amongst first year university students. The prevalence of specific aspects of career maturity (namely, self-information, decision-making, career information, integration of self-information and career information, and career planning) were investigated. In addition, the correlations between the aspects of career maturity and certain biographical variables such as age, gender and race were examined.

Raymond, Edwins. "Online Shopping in Haiti: An Empirical Study of Students’ Shopping Perceptions and Consumer Behavior." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32378.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate consumer behavior toward online shopping in Haiti with the findings of factors that affect whether or not they purchase online. The study showed that there is some potential for e-commerce in Haiti. However, there are many challenges, including lack of infrastructure, the low availability of credit cards, low government initiations. The sample consisted of 188 Haitian students at university level that were approached by using the “snowball” technique. Every participant made a purchase online before he received the questionnaire, and they were all above eighteen. Different questions were asked to the participants that reflected the characteristics of shopping. First, they were asked to give their frequency of online shopping transactions using a four-point Likert scale. Second, a seven-point Likert scale was used to rate their opinions about trends affecting electronic commerce, companies’ marketing approaches. Third, participants were asked to evaluate their feelings about traditional and online shopping using a nine-point bipolar scale. Finally, the Six Dimensional Achievement Motivations Scale by Jackson, Ahmed, and Heapy (1976) were used that allowed the participants to describe themselves. The results show that the participants still have a negative perception of online shopping compared to traditional shopping. Also, the study reveals that online shopping in Haiti is significantly affected by various Demographic factors like gender, income, and education. As opposed to demographics, the achievement dimensions were less related to online shopping behavior. The results show some limitations in terms of the time available to collect the data, the availability of the participants and their concerns about some questions. Also, generalization must be made carefully since the study is limited to Haitian students. The study has practical and managerial impacts, including the possible use by businesses, other researchers, and the Haitian government. The results of the study could be further used by researchers to conduct future studies in the same field.

Abstract:
The revolution in wireless and cellular communications has led to a remarkable growth in smart mobile cellular devices capable of Internet access and mobile web browsing. This study empirically examined the emerging role of the mobile Internet as an alternative access channel for a growing list of applications and services. Based on a survey of 220 undergraduate students in a major university in the Middle East, we developed and tested a model where the mobile advantage of e-communication, e-transactions, e-entertainment, and e-learning were posited to influence the choice of Internet access channel, mobile or stationary. The results indicated that e-communication, e-transactions, and e-entertainment significantly influenced the choice of Internet channel, whereas access to online learning resources and services did not have such an effect. Moreover, the study did not find any significant effect of gender in this preference, pointing to the declining relevance of the gender digital divide. Some theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed.

Smith, Terry, and Richard Spiers. "Perceptions of E-commerce Web Sites Across Two Generations." In InSITE 2009: Informing Science + IT Education Conference. Informing Science Institute, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/3334.

Abstract:
Numerous studies have examined and predicted the usage of e-commerce Web sites using the Technology Acceptance Model and its primary constructs of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Smith (2008) conducted an empirical study of four e-commerce Web sites with participation from a unique and often understudied segment of the population - the senior generation. In addition, he called for additional research on the same e-commerce Web sites with participants from today's student population, a generation that has grown up with computers and the Internet. During the Spring 2008 semester, the authors duplicated Smith's research and conducted a field experiment with a purposeful sample of students enrolled in four courses in the School of Information Technology at Macon State College. Consistent with the conclusion by Smith, of significant worth is the test of the robustness of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) when applied to e-commerce adoption by both the senior generation and the net generation. The model’s predictive and explanatory capabilities still hold true. This is the only study we know of that compares two generations and their perceptions of e-commerce Web sites.

Banks, David. "Reflections on Interpretivist Teaching with Positivist Students." In 2001 Informing Science Conference. Informing Science Institute, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/2388.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper reflects upon the teaching of two final year undergraduate subjects, Information Systems Policy and E Commerce, in a Management Information Systems degree program that is located in a School of Accounting and Information Systems. Both of the subjects were taught from an ‘interpretive’ standpoint, an approach that some students found to be challenging given that they were more familiar with the highly structured and positivist approach used in most of their previous subjects. Student feedback gained from informal conversations with the lecturer, an electronic meeting and through paper questionnaires as part of the normal formal evaluation process, is used to explore some of their reactions to a ‘soft’ approach and to provide a basis for consideration of future delivery patterns for the subjects.

Abstract:
In the current context, e-commerce has improved significantly as consumers have increased online shopping in different sectors of the economy. Therefore, the term “e-commerce” is becoming increasingly well-known and relevant for conducting business transactions. In addition, the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the extreme growth of e-commerce, and in the long term it will be a vital part of companies to achieve a greater competitive advantage as it offers benefits to the end consumer. However, it is important to note that there will be technological and non-technological limitations that will affect its growth. Nevertheless, the advance of information and communication technologies (ICTS) will tend to correct these limitations, consolidating the generalized increase of e-commerce worldwide. Consequently, it is pertinent that students of economics, administrative and accounting sciences, engineering, among others, expand their knowledge in e-commerce and thus be at the forefront of the different issues surrounding the digital transformation in companies and the digital economy.
