Full textThis thesis studies the interaction between the French and the Chinese silk industries during the period between the 18th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The reconstruction of this history is based on the different perspectives reflected in the historical documents in both Western and Oriental languages, which concerned with the commercial relations and the technical and stylistic exchanges between the two industries. The first part deals with these two silk industries during the 18th century and the second part is concerned with the evolution of the French silk industry from the end of the 18th to the mid-19th century. During this period, even though the contacts between the two industries became minimal, the study of the Chinese silk technology continued in France, based on the Chinese documents in France. The third part tackles the introduction of European techniques to China during the period between the mid-19th century and the beginning of the 20th century

Full textIn the international and national institutions policies information and communication technologies are introduced as an infallible tool to reduce spatial heterogeneity and more to be the base of the growth of the developing countries. However, the study of the telecommunication networks in india stress that it reproduces the wealth and other infrastructure distribution disparities. With the aim to understand the fact and to determine what really are the dynamics the use of means of communication have to be studied in the context of an activity which products are strongly material. The study of the use of different means of communication by businessmen of the silk trade network in bangalore (karnataka, india) shows that the size and the commercial orientation of the firm are determinant to explain the intensity of the use of means of telecommunication and of the number of means in the firm. Traditional means of communication are still very used, particularly face to face meeting. Moreover the diffusion of the internet as a tool to do electronic commerce is motivated by the aim conquer the international market but the real use of web sites do not cause very much enthusiasm

Full textBy examining the textile production (cotton, wool, silk) in the Greek-speaking area, from the end of the XVIIIth century to the period between the wars, this thesis has a triple aim. The first has the ambition (by the whole study) to open researches on textile (and more widely on the techniques) in modern Greece. The second (1st part of the thesis) trends towards building, from the equipment of modern Greek-speaking area, a general model of analysis to treat further cases and the heuristic feature of which would allow to analyse textile in other historical situations. The 3rd treats historical questions the study of which is difficult by the lack of existing works; this new approach makes us choose 4 parts in the modern Greek-speaking area (2nd part of the thesis): history of judgment, sharing-out of production according to places and circles, beginnings for a history of innovations and the main features of the community of art problem

Full textThe Silk waste of Briançon is founded in 1842 and is at the origin of the constitution of the first European group of silk waste processing. Through this company the problems of the constitution of a technical system are tackled, the structuring of an industrial sector and the installation of the markets. The founders of the company managed to impose a qualitative standard which is at the base of the development of their company. The early of mechanical means of production and chemical adoption requalify a product resulting from waste. From 1860, the changes in the origins of the raw material and the increase in the consumption of products of half-luxury, represent an advisability of increasing their production considerably. An active publicity, their storage capacities and the importance of the working capital explain the development of their company. They conclude thus from profitable agreements with spinners. A first phase of industrial merger is followed from there. To leave the privileged relations tied with their customers, constitutes itself in 1873, a European group of silk waste: Chance!- Veillon-Alioth and Co. In 1882, this company becomes a limited company, the Industrial Company for the Silk waste whose seat is in Basle. The apparently paradoxical establishment of this factory can be understood by the analysis of its labour. Pluriactive and strongly feminized, this one is satisfied with weak wages and offers a great flexibility. When the reports with work usinier change, logics of this situation disappear. These transformations and the difficulties of the sector of the silk waste involve the closing of the factory in 1932

Full textThis work, interested in the history of the lyons' traditional silk industry, wants to describe the whole research work, organized round oral documents. First, an epistemological, theoretical and methodological frame must be erected, in order to see through the oral documents and to reflect on the processus to make a source from documents. Secondly, after the description of interviews, their actors and intention to try save a community's memory and culture - my purpose is to show the sense and originality of the oral talmk. Among many possibilities, three came to light, as fit to invest the last traditional industry's workers identity : speeches about the community's places, as district and worksop; speeches about production, fabrics in every form; and mytical speech : throught it, traditional relationships inside and outside the community take roots. This methodological and theoretical experience results are examined in conclusion, and in the same time new questions are proposed. Lastly, an appendix tome presents a trascript amply annotated for three interviews

Full textThis book focuses on the silk trade between China and France in the 19th century, with the aim of clarifying certain specific Euro-Asian trade in the course of globalization in the 19th century. We chose the Franco-Chinese silk trade as the objective of research, because, first, the use of historical records and documents, we find that the Franco-Chinese trade in the 19th century and grew up mainly from the augmentation of the import of Chinese silk in France. The exchange of the silk is one of the most important and the most typical trade between the two countries in the 19th century. Secondly, the exchange of the Franco-Chinese silk plays a very important role in the trade in raw materials of the world in the 19th century. Precisely, this book is intended to address the issues and further discuss on the Franco-Chinese silk trade itself and the Eurasian business long distance, specifically on their evolutions, their impulses, their commercial intermediation and their industrial impacts. In the first step, we will show the development of Franco-Chinese silk trade of the 19th century, and analyze the causes of its prosperity, at the level of supply and demand. On the demand side, we will examine the impacts of changes in the French industry on imports from china. In particular, it relate to the decrease and the limited increase of the French silk production. On the supply side, the question is to understand what makes it possible for the growth of the production of raw silk in china, but also the reasons for the limited development of domestic demand. In a second step, we discuss the roles of the various silk trade corporations connecting two side of the Eurasian continent. First, the Great Britain is the most important country of distribution of raw materials and semi-finished products of the world during the period of the industrial revolution. We will observe the roles of the London market and English merchants in the indirect silk trade between France and china. Then, we show the roles of the French companies and foreign firms in the direct trade of silk between France and china, the prosperous of which starts from the 1850s and 1860s. In this part, we will discuss the influence of the growth of the direct import of Chinese silk in France to the installation and the development of French companies in china, and the relationship of these French companies with other intermediaries, especially the silks firms of England, Germany and Switzerland. Finally, we analyze the roles of different groups of Chinese merchants in the foreign trade of silk of china, the relationship between these groups and the relations between the Chinese traders and foreign firms. In the end, as the raw silk is a raw material for the production of silk, this book will also discuss the impact of the silk trade to the silk industry in the two countries. In this part, we will select a new angle – interaction of the industrializations in the two countries -- to analyze the relationship between foreign trade and industrialization in the 19th century. Firstly, there will be the discussions about the influence of the industrialization of western countries in the industrialization of the Asian countries. Secondly, we will also search for the effects of the dynamics of the silk trade between the two countries to their reactions of industrializations. In all these issues, we will try to link the eastern and western industrial revolutions to international trade together

Full textSilk industry played a central role in global commercial exchanges during the 19th century. Lyon, the historical capital of European silk industry, constitutes also one of the most important commercial centers of the continent, as early as in the roman period, again from the 16th century. In the 19th century, Lyon was renowned as one of the most important global silk business centers, mostly due to its close link to China, which was the biggest silk exporting country for the silk industry of Lyon. China, where the silk manufacturing techniques were invented during the Shang Dynasty, was an indispensable destination for silk manufacturers of Lyon. In fact, the opening of China to foreign trade, especially after the Second Opium War, which permits these silk manufacturers to establish and operate in the silk trade in China. To the mid-19th century, those silk trades were stepping up, with the establishment of the French concession in Shanghai as well as the opening of the direct maritime route between Marseille and Shanghai, Lyon’s silk entrepreneurs attempted, some of them by direct competition, others opting to work in partnership with well-established British trade houses in China, first to short-circuit the British monopoly and then to secure the silk supply by themselves. The efforts made by the silk entrepreneurs of Lyon made them predominant players in the global silk trad and contributed to the silk trade development between China and Europe during the 19th Century

Full textThe Lyon silk merchants, the Soyeux, have always sought to supply their Fabrique with various types of raw silk, in order to create the rich fabrics that contributed to the prestige of their city. During the XIXth century, Lyon became the most important, world-wide producer of luxury silks, thus playing a primary role in the national. These traders, for centuries, had travelled the silk routes tot the Far East. This thesis is the history of the special ties that the Soyeux and their networks established with China and Indochina. The study starts in 1843, when France established diplomatic relations with imperial China and envisaged installing themselves in Indochina. It ends in 1906 just as regional interests dilute into the national economy and the silk industry no longer occupies a primordial place in the local industry. This study traces how, from the Monarchy of July to the Second Empire, a group of Liberals, influenced by the philosophy of Saint-Simon, had, in the context of their competition with the British, established their own silk route. A strategy that was taken up and adapted by their heirs: conservative Republicans, with political leanings towards the Centre Gauche. They associated themselves with the Moderate Republicans, the Ferryists and the Gambettists to push France to implant itself in the Tonkin and to use it as a springboard towards Yunnan and Sichuan. The Soyeux would develop a unique colonial doctrine and an active economic strategy. This breaks with the usual image of an overcautious French business community in the Asian markets and also with the idea that the Indochina conquest was the result of a series of rash decisions. During more than a half-century, in the China Sea, the Soyeux of Lyon would write one of the least known pages of economical and social history within the larger context of French diplomatic and colonial history

Full textThis doctoral thesis is about the textile production in the late medieval Portugal, examining production, labour, and products. It characterizes the different textile sectors (wool, flax, hemp, silk, and cotton) and it presents its geographical distribution. It also analyses the technical resources and the different production stages in order to put in evidence certain features and phenomenon wich contribute to explain the evolution and development of Portuguese textile industry in the Middle Ages. This study gives particular attention to textile work, especially in the areas related to learning, labor specialization, external organization, and the role of women, and it scrutinizes the production methods. It also includes a catalogue, designed as consultation tool, wich gathers 23 entries on Portuguese medieval fabrics. Lastly, it discusses the commercial projection of Portuguese textiles in domestic and external markets, seeking to ascertain the importance and signifiance of the textile industry in the kingdom's economy

Full textDrawing on Markus and Kitayama's (1991) theory concerning self-construal differences between individualistic and collectivistic cultures and their influence on cognitions, emotions and motivations, this research compares independents and interdependents on four variables related to brand : brand associations, brand attitude, brand categorization, and the perceived fit between the parent-brand and the extension. The intercultural study conducted in France and Morocco showed interesting results. First, self-construal analysis showed that French are more independent than Moroccans, whereas the latter are more interdependent than French. Second, brand associations analysis showed that interdependents retrieve more exemplars of a brand than the independents, whereas the latter retrieve more global beliefs about a brand than interdependents. Third, the results indicate that independents and interdependents categorize brands differently. Interdependents are more likely to group together brands that are used in the same usage occasion, whereas independents are more likely to group together brands that share the same attributes

Full textSelf-made man, F. B. Arlès-Dufour, commissionner in the silk trade, faithful saint-simonian - old friend and executor for Prosper Enfantin - devoted himself, early in life, to economical and social affairs. His priority was to serve the interests of that class of people which was the poorest and most numerous. So, he took an early initiative, with often-stubborn persistence, in introducing and developing elementary and professional education (Société d'Instruction primaire du Rhône, Martinière, Ecole centrale lyonnaise, Société d'Enseignement professionnel du Rhône). Inamited by important actions, member of Chamber of commerce for 36 years, he was directly involved in the beginnings of the numerous industrial and commercial companies of the 19th century : banks (Banque de Lyon, Banque de France (Lyons), Crédit Lyonnais), railways (Paris, Lyons, Mediterranean), Suez canal - before Lesseps ! - etc. With an unfailing perseverance, he devoted himself to free exchange. Closely acquainted with numerous economic and political figures in Britain (Bowring, Cobden, Bright), he was one of the instigators of the commercial treaty with England of 1860. Member of the jury of several national and international exhibitions, he was especially general secretary of the International Exhibition of Paris of 1855, with the prince Napoléon as president. Regular visitor of the Palais Royal and, without doubt, Les Tuileries, sans rien craindre ni attendre du pouvoir" ("fearing nothing and expecting nothing from the authorities") as he wrote to the Emperor on april, second, 1869, this upright man of action, with a strong and unique personality, was made Commandeur de l'Ordre impérial de la Légion d'honneur

Full textThe purpose of this study is twofold. Firstly, we propose a definition of the Contes lyonnais and we give the reason why its authors were interested in the regional dialect of Lyon. Thus, the Contes lyonnais were stories composed by the literate class originating from Lyon’s political and cultural circle, following their precursor Nizier du Puitspelu. They were published mainly by the Société des Amis de Guignol during the first half of the 20th century in the Almanachs des Amis de Guignol and were written in the regional French of Lyon. They tell facetious stories of the Lyon silk workers life and they were intended to those who heartily care about Lyon's culture. The authors of the Contes lyonnais were born in their great majority in Lyon’s region. Their parents had worked in Lyon’s silk industries and some of them even tasted its flavour themselves. Their involvement in the building of the “lyonnitude” and their stubbornness demonstrates that their interest in the regional dialect of Lyon was lead by their love for Lyon. Secondly, we give a phonetic, morphosyntaxtic and lexical analysis of the Contes lyonnais. It demonstrates that two mains traits characterize their grammar : a popular aspect and a regional one. As much as the phonetics are rich in popular archaisms, the morphosyntax abounds in regional archaisms. Nonetheless, we notice a very slight proportion of regional traits that are uniquely Lyonnais. To the opposite, the vocabulary is mainly made up of regional words that are found only in the francoprovencal domain or in Lyon

Full textThis thesis deals with the impacts of the cross-border trade on the perceptions, on the relations between Turkey and Iraq, more precisely between two Kurdish regions: Turkish Kurdistan on one side, Iraqi Kurdistan on the other. This study allows us to understand and analyse political, economic and cultural relations by means of border trade between two border regions on either side of the border. By acting as a divide between the two Kurdish regions, the Turkish-Iraqi border plays a significant role as a barrier but also a zone of contact. Several actors play a role in the border trade of this region. The main ones are the States (or quasi-State if we consider the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan as a State within the federal state of Iraq), as well as the entrepreneurs on both sides of the border. After the Gulf War in 2003, the north of Iraq (Iraqi Kurdistan) became more linked to Turkey than to the rest of the country. This phenomenon has become more and more present. Every day, thousands of trucks cross the border separating Iraqi Kurdistan and Turkey, the firms and workers working in Iraqi Kurdistan are mostly Turkish Kurds. In this context, trade is important through its role of communication. It is also significant as a symbolic link attaching both sides. Furthermore, this trade again confirms the role of Iraqi Kurdistan as a reference for the whole Kurdish region

Full textSilk is a biopolymer spun by several arthropods. This fibre is made of protein arranged in a semi-crystalline microstructure and has remarkable mechanical properties. The main axis of this thesis work concerns the comprehension of silk fibre formation. Bombyx mori silk has been used as a model. The protein component of B. Mori silk, named Fibroin, has been spun into a fibre in a microfluidic device designed to mimic the silkworm spinning apparatus. The silk formation process has been followed by synchrotron radiation scattering (SAXS and WAXS) and Raman spectroscopy. It starts with an aggregation phase. The size of aggregates is around 100 nm. Inside these particles, the Fibroin is compacted. This aggregation is followed by a phase of compaction of the aggregates. Later, within a few hours, the Fibroin undergoes a conformational transition from a mainly amorphous structure (Silk I) to the semi-crystalline structure characteristic of the natural fibre (Silk II). This process is proposed as a possible model of silk formation in vivo. The second axis of this work is dedicated to the investigation of the physical properties of natural B. Mori silk. Its resistance to high temperature is studied from a molecular, structural and mechanical point of view. The semi-crystalline structure of the fibre remains stable up to carbonization although its mechanical properties and the Fibroin's integrity are affected at lower temperature. The effect of high pressure on the fibre structure is also presented : throughout the pressure increase, the crystallites can compact slightly before their disorganization

Full textThe history of the French shopping centers reveals the hegemonic character of the rationality which presses on their spatial, trade and economic organization. Their economic model is one of mass consumption. The shops and services which they shelter cannot escape it so that a sociology of work which takes them for object cannot ignore the industrial character of their work organization. The biographical interviews and observations conducted in the different shops of a large French shopping center remind it. These establishments share the same organizational basis articulating deskilling of work and rationalization of the working time. These precepts continually reconfigure the activity of employees who are witnessing the transformation of their job, the decrease of their autonomy or the impoverishment and the intensification of their work. It is in the light of these evolutions that one can understand the toughness of a work they can no longer dominate. The means provided to them are no longer adequate to contain the flows of customers and goods or to maintain the cordiality of their exchanges with the customers. The urgency is spreading and overflow situations are increasing, which generates exhaustion and stress. These disadvantages are manifested mainly in the private sphere and in a way which varies according to the social situation of the employees. However, beyond these disparities, they all show a concern about the future of their work, the meaning and the position that it gives them around the feeling, widely shared, that it has become dehumanized

Full textBy adopting a phenomenological approach to analyze the essence of fashion like a transitory process of incorporation, my work entitled "Torn silk. Essay on the Fashion as frame of mind of the postmodernity" shows how, on the basis of sociology of the day-to-day, we can release a network of senses by analyzing the various courses of social actors as varied as the Valentino, Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent, Jean-Paul Gaultier, John Galliano dressmakers, or the sciptwriter of Russian ballets Leon Bakst. From the set of themes of the mirror and its various reflective points, our study revisits the topics of Narcisse, the witches, the "femmes fatales" and the Russian Ballet in France to show the various modifications which the Fashion underwent and to try to seize its frame of mind. Various diagrams of comprehension of the new sociological and psychological values enable us to refine our approach and to delimit another delimitation as regards semiological analysis and phenomenology of the phenomenon of Fashion and anti-fashion

Full textThe purpose of this study is to develop innovative effects on silk due to plasmon resonance. For this, different synthesis pathways of pure gold nanoparticles and alloys with other noble metals have been considered: preliminary syntheses of nanoparticles through already known methods, followed by their incorporation on silk; and an in situ synthesis of nanoparticles directly on the silk. This second approach allowed us to identify two interesting effects: first, an iridescent effect of the dye (color change depending on the observation angle), due to the simultaneous formation on silk of plasmonic light-absorbing nanoparticles and light-reflective metal aggregates; second, an effect of concentrations addition by the pastes’ re-impression to achieve overlaying and gradient effects interesting for the industrial partners. After the preparation, storage and printing parameters’ study, the feasibility of such a process in industry and the reproducibility of the results have been validated. Some adjustments still need to be made in the case of a future industrialization

Full textThis PhD work aimed to understand and recreate artificially a self-assembling mechanism involving capillarity and elasticity present in spider silk. The primary function of the micronic glue droplets that exist on spider capture silk is to provide the spider web with adhesive properties. These droplets play yet another role: the dramatic enhancement of silk mechanical properties, as well as the preservation of the integrity of the web structure. The localization of the buckling instability within the glue droplets, site of over-compression due to the capillary meniscii implies that under compression this special drop-on-fibre system behaves like a liquid, whereas under tension it has a classical elastic spring regime. Spiders have thus found a way to create liquid-solid mechanical hybrids. The first part of my thesis aimed to the characterization of natural samples, which allowed in the second part to build a completely artificial system that mimics the natural samples, through fabrication of centimeter-long micronic soft fibres. The simple addition of a wetting liquid droplet made for an effective system with mechanical properties quantitatively close to that of spider capture silk.Fine characterization of the created drop-on-coilable-fibre systems yielded very good agreement between experimental results and predictions from numerical simulations and a analogy with phase transition, especially for properties such as the threshold for activation, the existence of an hysteresis and the coiling morphology. All those results added up to the design of unconventional techniques in field such as metamaterials and micro-fabrication
