Brockett, Adrian Alan. "Studies in two transmissions of the Qur'an." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2770.

Full text
Abstract:
Two transmissions of the Qur'an can be found in printed copies today. One stems from Kufa and the other from Medina. They are more commonly called by the names of their respective second-century transmitters, Hafs and 'Wars. This thesis examines the relationship between these two transmissions, as exemplified in the first five suras. The Hafs transmission is found in printed Qur'an copies from all but West and North-West Africa, which employ the War transmission. The Hafs transmission is therefore the transmission found in the vast majority of printed copies of the Qur'an, and printed copies of the 'Wars transmission are rare in comparison. There is no doubt that copies according to other transmissions have existed as well, but none has apparently been printed. The Basrans al—Xalil and Sibawayhi, for instance, had texts that differed in places from both the Hafs and 'Wars transmissions. And the existence of manuscripts according to the Basran reading-system of abu 'Amr by way of al—Duri has been testified in the Sudan this century. The Qur'an according to this last transmission has in fact been printed at the head and side of the pages of editions of al—Zamaxari's commentary a1—Kaf, but these are not considered by Muslims as Qur'an copies proper. They are type-set and have occasional misprints, and at times do not tally with data on the reading-system of abu 'Amr given in works on Qur'an readings. Qur'an copies according to transmissions such as these or others might therefore still exist in manuscript, but would not readily be consultable. So it would be of use to document differences between those transmissions that actually are available in print. On a general level, this provides a step towards a critical apparatus of the Qur'an, and on a more specific one, it provides the data for this thesis.

Full text
Abstract:
The Qur'anic concept of ahl al-kitab ("People of the Book") has a theological significance for Muslims, showing a sympathetic perception of other religions, particularly Jews and Christians, who share the same monotheistic belief as Muslims. There are many references to abl al-kitab in the Qur'an which may be grouped into two categories: the sympathetic verses which give ahl al-kitab a status similar to that of Muslims and the ambivalent verses which condemn the ahl al-kitab. In this study, surat Al 'Imran (3): 64, 113, 114 and 115 are chosen as examples of sympathetic verses. Six major works of selected classical and modern exegesis, from different schools of thought, are used in the analysis of these verses. Classical exegetes do not suggest any development of the concept of ahl al-kitab, while the modern exegetes include all religious communities in addition to Jews, Christians and Muslims.
The Qur'an itself recognizes the existence of good people among the ahl al-kitab and invites people of diverse faiths to come to a "common word" (kalimatin sawa'in) to establish mutual understanding through critical dialogue. This would, in turn, enable all people to work together to build a new civilization and greater harmony. This thesis avails itself of the fundamental teachings of the Qur'an on ahl ak-kitab and of Muslims' exegesis, as well as secondary scholarship on this topic. The concept of ahl al-kitab is shown to have novel relevance for our religiously pluralist world both today and for the future.

Locate-Timol, Samia. "Makkan and Madinan revelations : a comparative study." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2008. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/783/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to provide an in-depth study of the Makkan and Madinan revelations of the Qur'dn in terms of structure, themes, linguistic, stylistic and textual analysis of the sikas. The main objective of these analyses is to make the contents of the Qur'dn more accessible and easy to understand by the modem reader. Most importantly, the present study focuses on pivotal themes of the Qur'dn. Firstly to represent the context in which the revelations took place, an account of the historical background of the two towns Makka and Madina at the time of the Prophet himself is given. Also, the present study provides details on the inhabitants of these towns who were the main addressees of the Makkan and Madinan revelations. An overview of the Prophet Mubammad as an individuaL his tribal origins, and his social life in Makka until he got married and before his Message has also been given. The present discussion presents the Qur'dn in terms of its composition and its status as a Holy Scripture, compared to the previous other two Scriptures, the Old and the New Testaments. Thus, an insight into the Makkan suras has been provided: Outlines of its structure, themes, peculiarities, and textual analysis in terms of tenets of faith of some selected Makkan saras have been dealt with. Similarly, an insight into the Madinan sugras has also been provided along with structural, thematic and textual analysis of some selected Madinan sdras. Other concepts such as the 'coherence in the Qur'dn', 'nazm in the Qur'an' and 'ijaz al-Qur'an which are looked at in terms of conceptual chaining between adjacent suras and ayas have been developed in this study. Throughout our analysis of the Qur'dn, our aim is to deal with its suras and their classifications according to the descending order from the longest sura to the shortest ones rather than in terms of its chronological order of revelation. The present thesis provides intriguing comparative and contrastive analyses of the Makkan and Madinan suras from Muslim and non-Muslim perspectives. This study also provides 28 highly valuable observations about the study of the two phases of revelation. This provides a new insight into the analysis of the Qur'an and it points out a new direction in the analysis of Makkan and Madinan revelations. My approach has thus become different from classical classification of the suras. It is now based on suras structure, themes, text linguistics, etc.

Abstract:
This study examines the influence of Qur'anic teachings on the development of falsafa on the one hand, and the position of tafsirs in the intellectual history of Islam on the other. To do so, in the introduction it attempts to situate the place of falsafa and its connections with kalam and tafsir, and to explain the approach that will be followed in this research. In the first part it treats some of the ontological vocabulary of the Qur'an, while in the second, it concentrates on the questions raised by the Qur'an about the ontological status of pre-existing things as well as on the notions of creation and existence. To this purpose it surveys some early tafsirs in order to see how the debate over these issues evolved therein and how philosophical discussions were appropriated and naturalized by the mufassirun.

Byrö, Johannes. ""Beautiful Forcefields!" : Promotional Metadiscursive Language in eSports Commentaries." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för språk, litteratur och interkultur, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-64776.

Full text
Abstract:
For an eSports commentator, the ability to promote the rivalry between the competitors is just as important as fast and accurate commentary. Thus, it is of interest how an experienced commentator achieves this promotional language per some theoretical framework. Using the relatively new and unexplored linguistic field of promotional metadiscourse the quality of commentary can be evaluated quantifiably. Thus, this paper investigates the promotional language used by accomplished eSports commentators, in contrast to inexperienced novices, in the game StarCraft II. This is achieved with a lexical analysis of two StarCraft II commentaries using categories of promotional language previously identified in press releases. Experienced commentators were found to have a much more extensive and varied vocabulary than their inexperienced counterparts, adopting stronger evaluative adjectives and adverbs, as well as metaphorical language, in their commentaries. After comparing the commentaries with each other, the comments of two experienced commentators were compared. In this analysis, the same results were found in regards to commentator experience, as the less experienced commentator in this team featured less varied and weaker evaluative language than his more experienced co-commentator, yet more varied and evaluative than the novices. This paper shows that metadiscursive analysis methods can be fruitfully applied to non-academic discourses, as well as shining a light on the entertainment genre of eSports as a subject for further study.

Abstract:
Hugo a songe a "l'orient profond".
Adopting a deeper perspective, victor hugo continued after the orientales his reflections on the orient in his legende des siecles and dieu searching for the form that god takes in the orient, and comparing him to his own god conceived in all his works. Here he relied on the bible and the quran(in kasimirski's translation). Examining quranic extracts, one can notice his preoccupation with those aspects which indicate the greatness of god. Hugo's goal seems to have been the bringing together of all believers under one umbrella which is that of god the creator

Full text
Abstract:
The Path of Song: Semantic Strategies in Iliad VIII is a continuous commentary to Book VIII of the Iliad, applying to this section of the poem a new aesthetic methodology developed primarily by the comparative scholar J. M. Foley. Termed 'traditional referentiality1, this methodology holds that oral traditional poetics is founded upon the duality of 'denotative' and 'connotative' levels of meaning, in which the semantic potential of any given element in the narrative, of any sort, is a result of the audience's experience with that element in previous performances. Thus, the associative qualities of traditional narrative allow the poet during the realisation of the song to manipulate audience expectations as they listen to stories whose general outlines (i.e. who kills who, who must not die at a certain moment in the story, etc.) they know from a lifetime of experience. To recapture this complex of meaning is to recreate the ancient experience of Homeric poetry, giving a modern audience access to the excitement and uncertainty of a narrative designed for a progressive unfolding at the moment of performance. After a brief introduction, in which a key term within Homeric poetics (οϊμη 'song path') is briefly discussed before we outline the history of the methodology and its place within modern scholarship, the commentary successively summarises and describes the key elements in small sections of the narrative, and then presents for each of these sections the comparative evidence establishing the conclusions reached. A conclusion is followed by two appendices on some of the more contentious speech introduction formulae.

Abstract:
The commentary is intended to provide information and arguments useful to understand and appreciate the poetry on a line by line basis. For this purpose it deals with a wide range of questions (of e.g. text, interpretation, sources, history, geography, atronomy), rather than investigating a single aspect of the poem. To cover the 546 lines of Book 10, it has been necessary to be a little selective. While I have, I hope, looked at most major problems of text and interpretation, I have not dealt with every point of interest or debated every variant interpretation of other scholars. Silence on textual matters may be taken to indicate acceptance of Housman's choice of reading. There is no introduction. A short appendix examines Lucan's sources and purpose in the Nile section of lines 194-331.

Fonseca, Ronald. "Blackstone's Commentaries: Foothold or Footnote in Louisiana's Antebellum Legal History." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2007. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/514.

Abstract:
The judges of the Supreme Court of Louisiana issued a court order, in the year 1840, mandating a required reading course of legal materials for prospective bar applicants. Included in the list of materials was Sir William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England. Louisiana's legal system has, from its inception, been based on the civil law, a system tracing its roots back to Rome. The other organized system of law is the common law, which originated in the customs and judicial decisions of England, and is the legal system followed in the other forty-nine states. A question arises as to the reason the Commentaries was included in the "Course of Studies," since there exist fundamental differences between the two systems. This thesis explores the possible motive by examining the decisions of the Territorial Superior Court, and the Supreme Court of Louisiana between the years 1809 and 1875.

Rocha, Eva. "Antithetical Commentaries on X, Y and the Disruption of Being." VCU Scholars Compass, 2016. https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4278.

Full text
Abstract:
Through discursive essays and poetic narrative, Antithetical Commentaries on X, Y and the Disruption of Being explores the tenuous relationship between modes of measurement and the struggle for human relevance in the post-contemporary digital age. In the introductory essay, “Not the Feather, but the Bird”, I give an overview of the inherent problems of object-oriented ontology, and how it relates to aesthetics and social issues of our times. In the Developmental Overview, I detail how I developed my installation approach and techniques, particularly with regard to the three-way dynamic of the artist:work:viewer relationship and how it can encourage a ‘transgression’ that leads to the possibility of a transformative awareness of being. Subsequently, I present a series of ‘antithetical’ commentaries that neither explain nor expand the installation, rather, they create a non-binary duality that, through an entirely non-linear anti-narrative, work to erode the overlay of personal, civic and collective grids present in the memory space/time referenced in the video, TAG. Finally, in “Grid: Towards a Transgressive Humanism.” I propose a path by which installation art might serve to create transgressive opportunities for viewers, rather than the transcendence sought through religious rituals, which often reinforce stigmas, fears and authoritarian social dynamics, or worse, the reductive loop, of many contemporary approaches to art which proclaim their detachment in wordy displays, essentially leading to a form of aesthetic nihilism. This Transgressive Humanism is not presented as a dogma, but rather a revitalization of the work as a vessel of possibilities, an agent of creative growth for the artist and the viewer.

Athanassiou, Nikolaos. "Marginalia and commentaries in the papyri of Euripides, Sophocles and Aristophanes." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1999. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1348751/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to examine a selection of papyri from the large corpus of Euripides, Sophocles and Aristophanes. The study of the texts has been divided into three major chapters where each one of the selected papyri is first reproduced and then discussed. The transcription follows the original publication whereas any possible textual improvement is included in the commentary. The commentary also contains a general description of the papyrus (date, layout and content) as well reference to special characteristics. The structure of the commentary is not identical for marginalia and hypomnemata: the former are examined in relation to their position round the main text and are treated both as individual notes and as a group conveying the annotator's aims. The latter are examined lemma by lemma with more emphasis upon their origins and later appearances in scholia and lexica. After the study of the papyri follows an essay which summarizes the results and tries to incorporate them into the wider context of the history of the text of each author and the scholarly attention that this received by the Alexandrian scholars or later grammarians. The main effort is to place each papyrus into one of the various stages that scholarly exegesis passed especially in late antiquity. Special treatment has been given to P.Wurzburg 1, the importance of which made it necessary that it occupies a chapter by itself. The last chapter of the thesis deals with the issue of glosses, namely their origin and use in the margins of papyri. The focus is again on the history of early collections of tragic and comic vocabulary and their appearance in the margins or hypomnemata. The parallel circulation of hypomnemata and glossaries often compiled by the same people and some special features of the glosses in our material led to the conclusion that most glosses at least in the earlier periods were copied from hypomnemata. The thesis ends with a presentation of all conclusions from the previous chapters in relation to the history of scholarship and book production in late antiquity

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the close relationship between Luther's exegesis and his theology. I analyse the development of Luther's hermeneutics in the light of his commentaries on the Psalms in three periods. Chapter one summarises the hermeneutical tradition out of which Luther developed. The key point is the significance of the tradition of interpretation for Luther's commentaries on the Psalms. Chapter two examines Luther's hermeneutics in the dictata, his first series of lectures on the Psalms. The main emphasis is placed on the emergence of Luther's new theology. Chapter three examines Luther's hermeneutics in the Operationes, his second series of lectures on the Psalms. Two points are made: the simplicity of Luther's exegetical method and the clarity of his doctrine of justification by faith. Chapter four examines Luther's hermeneutics in the third period, his commentaries on the Psalms in the 1530s. Special attention is given to Luther's theology of the Word. Chapter five is a comparative study which analyses the development of Luther's hermeneutics in three specific types of Psalms: 8, 18 and 68, from each of the three periods. I deal with the existential approach of Gerhard Ebeling and the historical-theological approach of James S. Preus. The first three chapters show that Ebeling's approach is more convincing than Preus's with reference to the emergence of Luther's Reformation theology. The fourth chapter shows that Ebeling misinterprets Luther's theology of the Word in his later periods. Ebeling grasps the kernel of Luther's hermeneutics - the proclamation of the Word of God and the participation of the interpreter. However, because of the philosophical presuppositions he ignores the christological understanding of the Word of God, a crucial point of Luther's theology.

Abstract:
Although New Testament scholars generally acknowledge that "knowing" and "knowledge" play and important role in 2 Peter, little research has to date been done about the motif of knowing in 2 Peter. The aim of this study was to determine what the nature of the motif of knowing in 2 Peter is and what place it takes in his theology. The method that is used is exegetical, and this is done in accordance with the grammatico-historical model within the reformational tradition. The emphasis is especially on the special canonics (Introduction) of the epistle, the analysis of the thought structure, and the definition of the meanings for which words are used. In the analysis of the thought structure the method developed by Coetzee (1988:19-37) is followed to a large extent. The definition of meanings is done mainly in accordance with the method of componential analysis as proposed by Louw and Nida (1972:84-87; 1988i:vi-xx). The motif of knowing occurs in 2 Peter as a clearly repeated and meaningful semantic unit. Although this is not always done in the same way, the motif has a central place in practically every thought unit in the epistle. In the introduction of the letter (1:1-2) the motif of knowing is found in the truths of faith which the readers have accepted, as well as deep knowledge of God and Jesus Christ. In 1:3-11 Peter proposes a summary of his doctrine to his readers, encouraging them to apply these truths with insight and understanding. The ability to understand especially consists in comprehending the implications of a covenantal relationship with God. In the purpose of the letter (1:12-15; 3:1-2) the motif of knowing has a central place. Peter writes the epistle so that his readers will be able, after his death, to evoke from memory the knowledge (of his doctrine) of which they already dispose. The doctrine consists of information made known to them by the apostles about the powerful coming of Christ. The information is based in God's revelation in the glorification of Christ and in the Old Testament prophecies (1:16-21). In 2:1- 3:13, where Peter deals with the false teachers and the mockers, the motif of knowing still plays an important role. In chapter 2 he warns that false teachers will come who, as a result of a lack of insight will propagate licentiousness. He offers the consolation, however, that the Lord remembers to judge false teachers and to save. the believers. He also warns them against, in spite of their knowledge of Christ, returning to their old convictions. When the false preachers mockingly question both God's involvement in history and his judgment, the readers should not forget the know ledge which they have received about God's judgment and his time schedule. They should maintain the right perspective on God's grace and in joy wait upon his advent. Through this epistle the apostle equips his readers with the necessary knowledge to keep them strong against the inevitable onslaughts of the false teachers.

Wang, Wei. "Newspaper commentaries on terrorism in China and Australia a contrastive genre study /." Connect to full text, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/1701.

Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy(PhD)
This thesis is a contrastive genre study which explores newspaper commentaries on terrorism in Chinese and Australian newspapers. The study examines the textual patterning of the Australian and Chinese commentaries, interpersonal and intertextual features of the texts as well as considers possible contextual factors which might contribute to the formation of the newspaper commentaries in the two different languages and cultures. For the framework of its analysis, the study draws on systemic functional linguistics, English for Specific Purposes and new rhetoric genre studies, critical discourse analysis, and discussions of the role of the mass media in the two different cultures. The study reveals that Chinese writers often use explanatory rather than argumentative expositions in their newspaper commentaries. They seem to distance themselves from outside sources and seldom indicate endorsement of these sources. Australian writers, on the other hand, predominantly use argumentative expositions to argue their points of view. They integrate and manipulate outside sources in various ways to establish and provide support for the views they express. It is argued that these textual and intertextual practices are closely related to contextual factors, especially the roles of the media and opinion discourse in contemporary China and Australia. The study, by providing both a textual and contextual view of the genre under investigation in the two languages and cultures, aims to establish a framework for contrastive rhetoric research which moves beyond the text into the context of production and interpretation of the texts as a way of exploring reasons for the linguistic and rhetorical choices made in the two sets of texts.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTh (Old and New Testament))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.
The aim of this thesis is to explore the trends that are found in commentaries on the book of Exodus and their appropriateness in the African context. The study also seeks to move from a socio-political understanding of Exodus as liberation theology to the cultural understanding of Exodus as African theology. The following three trends are found in modern commentaries on Exodus as explored by this thesis: • Historical-critical approach – dealing with the world behind the text or author centred criticism. Commentaries found under this group include those of M Noth (1962), TE Fretheim (1990), N Sarna (1991), B S Childs (1977) and WHC Propp (1999). • Literary-critical approach – this deals with the text itself or it is text centred. Commentaries found in this category include: W Brueggemann (1994), J G Janzen (1997) and C Houtman (1993). • Theological-critical approach – deals with the world in front of the text. Commentaries of GV Pixley (1987), J Durham (1987) and G Ashby (1998) are good examples of the latter named approach. Exploration into the study of the above listed three trends and their corresponding modern commentaries show that the commentaries are not fully appropriate in the context of Africa (except Ashby). This is so because the above modern commentaries have not directly addressed the ongoing issues of poverty, political, economic, oppression, marginalization, HIV / AIDS, cultural and social issues, famine, racial and sex discrimination, religious crises, and other epidemics and natural disasters prominently found in Africa - particularly among the third world countries. The modern commentaries mentioned above are indirectly relevant for Africa since the topics which they address, resonate with the readers and interpreters of Exodus in Africa. This resonance is possible if readers and interpreters of Exodus in Africa find similarities between modern commentaries and their own current context. The study also shows that the three trends found in modern commentaries on Exodus are dependent on one another to bring forth a meaningful interpretation. Based on this working relationship between the three trends mentioned above, it is suggested that the three trends should be considered in close connection with one another. Biblical interpretation in Africa must do justice to the literary, historical and theological aspects of the Bible to be meaningful and appropriate in Africa.

Abstract:
Summary. The aim of present paper is to compare the language used in men and women basketball commentaries, and to discuss the main influential factors for these differences to occur. Firstly, two basketball matches (women and men gold final games in London Olympics 2012) are chosen for the analysis. The first quarter of men’s game and the first quarter of women’s game are transcribed, and the data is analyzed in several aspects, which are presented below. Secondly, the discussion is referred to books and articles presenting researches on language, gender, and sports. In the theoretical part, the discussion is carried out along the topics on women involvement in sports, comparison of men and women physical bodies, gender-based occupational distribution, genders specific language in televised sports and basketball commentaries, the coverage of women’s sport in mass media, and gender specific language used by media channels. This part also argues the stereotypical point of view that still prevails in the society for acceptable and unacceptable behaviors determined by gender. In the practical part, the transcribed data is presented for the analysis in three categories: the use of statistics, the interpretation of physical contact, and gender specific descriptions and references. The discussion contains graphics, tables with finding, and relevant examples from the men and women basketball matches. The findings are discussed referring to researches carried out by scholars...
