Ferré, Rose-Marie. "La commande artistique à la cour de René d’Anjou : un concert de mots et d'images." Paris 4, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA040125.
Cultivated and original patron, René d'Anjou shows an interest for all the forms of art. Not only author, but also reader, painter maybe, spectator, director and playing same his own role within the framework of his burial and of his graves, the prince appears as the central character of the artistic creation to his court. In this prospect, it was a question of studying here the relation of the figurative arts and the dramatic art, and more widely the dialogue between the arts. However, it was advisable to exceed Émile Mâle's reflections on the influence of the Mysteries on the visual arts and to abandon a vision of the artistic production in term of ancestry and hierarchy. The questioning thus concerned mainly the processes of creation of the images, their functioning and their meanings and the problem of cultural transmission. The figurative arts, the literature or the dramatic art indeed participate in common references, treat the same subjects and sometimes raise identical questions, but according to different modalities of expression. Often, interferences build up themselves between several languages - written, visual or oral-, so playing on the possible senses of the work of art and mobilizing the culture of the reader and/or the spectator. The reserved examples contributed from then on to clarify the plurality of these interactions which question permanently about the status, the role of the image and its relation in the others media. It also allowed to emphasize the personality of certain big artists of the end of the Middle Ages among which the versatility and the culture seduced the prince

This thesis examines the commissioning of public art in public spaces between 1973 and 2008 in metropolitan France and Germany. Without losing sight of the artworks in all their diversity, our aim is to examine the institutional policies of these two democratic regimes, in particular the commande publique in France and, on the other side of the Rhine, the municipal programmes of Kunst im öffentlichen Raum of the city-states of Bremen and Hamburg. The dynamics we analyse respond to very different political and cultural contexts, but they are deployed in relation to a common (though sometimes vague) idea: the democratisation of access to culture. The public and the publics are taken into account, a concern which leads us to question the varying importance given to citizens, relatively to historical and political contexts. We especially address their role in the decision-making processes, in the issues related to mediation, and in the inclusion of participative or collaborative works.Consequently, we conduct a careful comparison of both national perspectives, using their inception as an historical starting point, and drawing from a large body of critical and theoretical literature, institutional archives, and interviews. Such a synthesis, supported and illustrated by informed commentaries of various artistic achievements, allows us to pinpoint crucial and subtle differences and similarities. Finally, we take on a transnational outlook to outline a typology of the involvement of citizens in the commissioning of public art in public spaces
Ducret, Sophie. "La fabrique de la création artistique : Approche historiographique et épistémologique du processus de la commande au Moyen Âge : l’exemple des peintures murales du Midi de la France aux âges romans (XIe-XIIe siècle)." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Montpellier 3, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023MON30047.
Since its 'rediscovery' in the 19th century, the practice of wall painting in the Romanesqueages has benefited from a long tradition of study in France and Europe. This historiography is based on developments in a fairly recent field of study, but has been enriched by epistemological developments in related disciplines, such as history and the social sciences more generally. Following on from recent research into the players involved in artistic creation, particularly in the field of mural painting, our thesis focuses on an essential player in production traditionally referred to as the 'patrons'. On the basis of a corpus of 30 ensembles preserved in the South of France, most of which date from the twelfth century, and faced with a silence in the historical sources, we have confronted the question of 'commissioning'. The historiographical approach enables us to put into perspective certain knowledge we have gained on the subject, and to propose a new vision of artistic creation
Nadal, Emilie. "Le miroir d'un archevêque : étude autour du pontifical de Pierre de la Jugie (Narbonne, Trésor de la cathédrale, ms. 2)." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Toulouse 2, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013TOU20114.
In 1350 , Pierre de la Jugie, archbishop of Narbonne and nephew of Pope Clement VI, decides to make a Pontifical that lives up to his ambitions. Decorated with 24 medallions for the calendar, a full page and 61 historiated letters, the book is an exceptional testimony, well documented, which helps to understand the ways liturgical illuminated manuscripts were ordered during the fourteenth century, and it can be replaced in a well-defined political, religious and artistic context. In addition to a calendar, and computus, this pontifical of Guillaume Durand also contains several additional texts, specifically added by Pierre de la Jugie for some of them, and accompanied by an iconography of their own. The study of the text and iconography highlights the strong involvement of the ecclesiastical patron in the creation of this book. The paintings that adorn these pages are the work of four artists who, despite their different backgrounds (Catalonia, southern France, Italy) have collaborated and influenced each other. The census of production of each of illuminators can finally highlight the existence of exchanges between artists and church patrons belonging to the same clan prelates Limousin networks
