The description of the embryonic development of the hermit crabs Clibanarius antillensis Stimpson, 1859, C. sclopetarius (Herbst, 1796), C. vittatus (Bosc, 1802), and Pagurus criniticornis (Dana, 1852) and preliminary observations on the development of Pagurus brevidactylus (Stimpson, 1858) and Paguristes tortugae Schmitt, 1933 were done. The analysis of the external morphology of the embryos of the studied species allowed the identification of seven stages: Stage 1, Zygote and cleavage; Stage 2, Homogeneous mass (advanced cleavage and gastrulation); Stage 3, Initiation of the germinal disc (yolk-free area); Stage 4, Percentage of yolk-free area from 5% to 50-70%; Stage 5, Eye pigmentation (comma-shape) and heart beating; Stage 6, Percentage of yolk-free area from 70-80% to 95%) and eye development to a darkened irregularly-rounded shape; Stage 7, Zoea visible and hatching. Despite all stages were recorded in all species, interespecific differences were recorded in relation to zygote size and embryo color; cleavage, absolute and relative developmental time, and moment eye pigmentation appeared. Such morphological differences may be associated to variations in the yolk amount and composition and reveal different reproductive strategies at least between P. criniticornis and all studied species of Clibanarius.

Abstract:
Phytophthora alni, a soil- and waterborne pathogen, causes aggressive root and collar rot on riparian alder populations (1,2,4). The disease has been described from several European countries with a destructive impact in Great Britain (1,2). All European alder species and the red alder (Alnus rubra) are highly susceptible. P. alni has multiple variants that have been placed in three subspecies: P. alni subsp. alni, P. alni subsp. uniformis, and P. alni subsp. multiformis (1). In July 2009, a survey of symptoms of Phytophthora rot from A. glutinosa at 20 riparian stands along the Avia River in Galicia (northwest Spain) was conducted. Affected trees showed symptoms of Phytophthora rot including abnormally small, sparse, and yellowish foliage, dieback in the canopy, necroses of the inner bark and cambium, and bleeding cankers on the trunks (2,4). Phytophthora spp. were baited from saturated rhizosphere soil and watercourses using oak leaflets (4). Roots and tissue from fresh active inner bark lesions were transferred to selective medium V8-PARPH agar (4) and incubated for 7 days at 22°C in the dark. A Phytophthora sp. was isolated, transferred to carrot agar (CA), and incubated in the dark. Colonies were appressed, often irregular in outline, and with limited aerial mycelium (1). Growth on CA occurred from 4 to 31°C with optimum growth at 23 to 25°C. Chlamydospores were not observed. Ellipsoid, nonpapillate, noncaducous sporangia had a length/breadth average ratio of 1.4. Nesting and extended internal proliferation occurred. Oogonia, antheridia, and oospores were abundantly produced in a single culture. Oogonia with tapered stalks were spherical (mature oogonia 38 to 50 μm in diameter) and some had ornamented walls or bullate protuberances (1,2). Antheridia were large, amphigynous, and predominantly two-celled (23 to 37 × 16 to 23 μm). Oospores were plerotic. Distorted comma-shaped or smaller oogonia and aborted oospores were observed (1). Amplification of DNA was accomplished by using sequence-characterized amplification region-PCR primers (3). The amplicon sizes obtained were identical to P. alni subsp. alni (3). Internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-DNA and nadh1 mitochondrial gene were also amplified. DNA sequences of ITS and mt-DNA regions were deposited in GenBank (Nos. GU108602 and GU108603). Comparison of the sequences showed 100% homology with P. alni subsp. alni (GenBank Nos. FJ746679 and DQ202490). P. alni subsp. alni was recovered from trees at 3 of 20 riparian alder stands with symptoms. Pathogenicity of one representative isolate was confirmed by inoculating 10 3-year-old A. glutinosa seedlings grown in pots. One shallow cut was made into the bark at the collar level. A colonized agar plug, from the margin of an actively growing colony of P. alni subsp. alni, was inserted beneath the flap that was sealed with Parafilm. Five controls seedlings received only sterile CA agar plugs. Plants were incubated at 24°C and 95% humidity for 30 days. On inoculated plants, necroses progressed bidirectionally from the wound, and dead leaves and wilting of shoots were observed. P. alni subsp. alni was recovered from inoculated seedlings, but not from controls. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Phytophthora rot on alder caused by P. alni subsp. alni in Spain.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract.Transport of weaned pigs poses special challenges because of their size and thermal needs as well as the extended distances and transport times. The resultant economic impact can be substantial. Compared to transport of market pigs, weaned pigs generally encounter much farther travel distances with different adapting abilities to the environmental conditions. The objectives of this study were: 1) to characterize the environmental conditions within a typical transport trailer for weaned piglets to determine if current management practices and trailer design provides an acceptable environment as evidenced by mortality rates and environmental parameters, and 2) to analyze airflow patterns of the tranport trailer using a scale model in a wind tunnel. Data from 78 usable transport trips were collected for air temperature in each trailer compartment, ambient temperature, distance traveled, time traveled, stocking density, and mortality by compartment. The 78 trips had an average distance of 778 km (range of 264 to 1016 km), travel time of 8.51 h (range of 3.4 to 12.3 h), and mortality rate of 0.031% (range of 0 to 1.11%). There was no significant difference in mortality by compartment (p>0.05). The results indicate that if pigs are transported at a higher stocking density, the compartment temperatures would be similar during cold weather (e.g., 2°C). Under mild weather condition (e.g., 16°C), significant differences could exist in compartment temperature between part of the upper deck (Upper 1) and the lower deck (Lower 4) (p<0.05). In comparison, no significant differences were found at warm conditions (e.g., 29°C) (p>0.05). In addition to the weather influence, in-trailer environment is affected by the side openings which may be adjusted by the driver. Abstract:

MBA Professional Report
The purpose of this MBA project is to evaluate and assess the metrics, incentives and other terms and conditions of the Performance Based Logistics (PBL) contract between Naval Aviation Inventory Control Point (NAVICP) and Honeywell in support of FA-18/S-3/P-3/C-2 Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) to determine if the contractual terms and conditions established are effective in facilitating and encouraging the full potential of PBL savings and improved performance. PBL is an acquisition reform initiative intended to improve weapon system logistics with the goals of: 1) compressing the supply chain, 2) eliminating non-value added steps, 3) reducing total ownership costs, 4) improving weapon system readiness and reliability, and 5) reducing logistics footprint. PBL entails buying measurable outcomes with metrics based on war fighter stated performance requirements. The war-fighter requirements should be linked to metrics and metrics should be linked to contract incentives. An additional element of PBL is gain sharing, which ensures the contractorb2ss profit and the governmentb2ss increased performance at a reduced cost. Based on the elements of PBL, the objectives of this project include; 1) comparing the actions/activities/accomplishments of the contract to the goals of PBL, 2) measure and appraise the attainment of those goals 3) provide information about the major factors causing the observed effects on the above, and 4) identify and analyze the metrics and incentives for their effectiveness in achieving the desired outcomes. In meeting the objectives of this report, our findings indicate that non-value added steps were eliminated, and there were potential reductions in the logistics footprint. On the other hand, the supply chain was not compressed; aircraft maintenance costs did not decrease; and more importantly, the APU reliability for the FA-18, S-3, and C-2 did not improve. For the P-3, reliability improved by 7% to 19%, but not 300% per the contract guarantee. Our research also determined that the reliability metric was inappropriate for measuring and tracking APU reliability improvements. Additionally, disincentives were provided for not meeting contract requirements with the only contract incentive being the award term contract arrangement. Our report provides recommendations specific to the APU TLS contract and other recommendations for other PBL applications. These recommendations include an alternative contract pricing and gain sharing methods and appropriate metrics and incentives that reflect the true definition of PBL.

Abstract:
Peroxiredoxins have multiple cellular functions as major antioxidants, signaling regulators, molecular chaperones and tumor suppressors. Peroxiredoxin 1 (Prx1) is the most abundant among the six isoforms of human peroxiredoxins. It is frequently over-expressed in various cancer cells, which is known associated with carcinogenesis, metastasis and resistance to radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Prx1 could thus be an interesting anticancer target. In this study, we first evaluated the impact of Prx1 knockdown (Prx1–) on cellular sensitivity to dozens of anticancer drugs including vinblastine, taxol, doxorubicin, daunorubicin, actinomycin D, and 5-fluorouracil, and of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generating agents, including hydrogen peroxide, 2-phenylethyl isothiocyanate, β-lapachone (β-lap) and menadione. We observed that Prx1 knockdown significantly enhanced cancer cell sensitivity to β-lap and menadione, two naphthoquinones with anti-cancer activity. We first investigated the underlying mechanisms responsible for the specifically enhanced cytotoxicity to β-lap in a Prx1 knockdown context. Prx1 knockdown markedly potentiated β-lap-induced cytotoxicity through ROS accumulation. This effect was largely NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1)-dependent and associated with the phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK), protein 38 (p38) and extracellular signal-regulated kinases (Erk) proteins in mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways, and a decrease in thioredoxin 1 protein levels. Based on the fact that Prx1 is a major ROS scavenger and a partner of apoptosis signaling kinase 1 (ASK1) and JNK, two key components of MAPK pathways, we propose that Prx1 knockdown-induced sensitization to β-lap is achieved through the combined action of ROS accumulation and MAPK pathway activation, leading to cell apoptosis. We then investigated the underlying mechanisms responsible for the specifically enhanced cytotoxicity to menadione in Prx1– cells. Enhanced sensitivity to menadione was associated with a rapid and significant intracellular ROS accumulation and necroptotic-like cell death. Menadione-induced ROS accumulation occurred immediately in the cytosol, the nucleus, and even more noticeably in the mitochondrial matrix, correlated with significant oxidation of both mitochondria-localized thioredoxin 2 and peroxiredoxin 3. Prx1 knockdown significantly up-regulated mRNA and protein levels of NRH: quinone oxidoreductase 2 (NQO2). Increased activity of NQO2 was largely responsible for menadione-induced ROS accumulation and consequent cell death. Our data indicate that massive ROS accumulation results from the combined effect of increased ROS generation by higher NQO2 activity during menadione metabolism, and diminished Prx1 scavenging activity. Finally and noteworthy, the metabolic pathways that lead to ROS accumulation, downstream signaling pathways and cell death mechanisms appear to be distinct for β-lap and menadione

In the present work, UV absorber, 2-(2’-hydroxyl-5’-methylphenyl) benzotriazole (1), has been taken as the starting material to synthesize various derivatives such as 2-(2’-hydroxyl-5’-methyl-3’-nitrophenyl) benzotriazole (2), 2-(2’-hydroxyl-5’-methyl-3’-sulfonphenyl)benzotriazole (3), 2-(2’-hydroxyl-3’- methoxymethyl-5’-methylphenyl)benzotriazole (4), 2-(2’-hydroxyl- 3’-butoxy- methyl-5’-methylphenyl)benzotriazole (5) and 2-(2’-methoxy- 5’-methylphenyl) benzotriazole (6). Each of the derivatives was dissolved in hexane, cyclohexane, methanol and DMSO, respectively, to measure the photophysical properties (UV/Vis and Fluorescence). Spectroscopic study of UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence emission in solution state, and theoretical study with density functional theory (DFT) method were employed to characterize these UV absorbers. According to the results of UV absorption and fluorescence emission, it was found compounds with electron- withdrawing groups in the C-11 site could promote the strength of intramolecular hydrogen bonding and compounds (4,5) were capable of preventing from interacting with the solvent, which was due to the steric effect from bulkyl substituent in the C-11 site. By using molecular orbital analysis, it was found we can reasonably analyze that compounds(1)-(5) prefer intramolecular proton transfer in excited state (1) to (5) as to deactivate the excited state.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: Our goal will be to assess the impact on mental health of university students by comparing data from studies during and after contingency measures imposed to contain the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and to identify potential risk and protective factors for mental health. The results will be important for designing appropriate psychological interventions and mental health resources needed by university students. The research question was constructed following the PECO strategy. P=Population includes university students. E= exposure comprises contingency measures (confinement/social isolation/quarantine). C= comparison of studies conducted during and after the contingency measures (confinement/social isolation/quarantine) imposed by the pandemic of COVID-19. O= outcome immediate effect or consequences such as psychological impacts (depression, stress, anxiety, well-being, fear, burnout). Thus, the main question to be asked is: "What is the psychological impact caused by the Sars-Cov-2 pandemic on students' mental health during and after the contingency/restriction measures (confinement/social isolation/quarantine)?"

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: This Systematic review, describes two issues. 1. in the general population, a high TyG index predicts the risk of ischaemic stroke (IS) P: the general population without ischaemic stroke. I: higher TyG index. C: lower TyG index. O: first ischaemic stroke occurrence. S: Observational study. 2.In the ischaemic stroke(IS) population, a high tyg index predicts poor prognostic outcome. P: ischaemic stroke patient population. I: higher TyG index. C: lower TyG index O: death, stroke recurrence, poor functional outcome, deterioration in neurological function. S: Observational study. Information sources: We searched the Cochrane Library, Embase, MEDLINE, Web of Science, PubMed, and other relevant English databases and related websites. In addition, we reviewed the references for inclusion for literature that we may not have retrieved.
