Abstract:
Abstract This book aims to scientifically address the paucity of combined research on tourism and degrowth by presenting case studies on the dynamics of degrowth from different parts of the world. By doing so, it comes to explore degrowth as a strategy towards balanced tourism development and as a small, locally owned, alternative to overdevelopment and overtourism. The book has 10 chapters and a subject index.

Abstract:
Drawing from disciplines as varied as sociology, economics, psychology, family studies, political science, demography, and women’s studies, research on the division of labor comes from a rich, interdisciplinary tradition. Despite obvious links between division of paid and unpaid labor between spouses and work–family variables, particularly around issues of gender and parenthood, organizational scholars have been largely absent from this conversation. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to synthesize the recent division of labor literature, focusing on research from the past decade and a half (2000–2014), with the goal of highlighting connections between division of labor research and theories, constructs, and questions of interest to organizational scholars to facilitate integration and future research. Specifically, this article reviews common measurement methods, theoretical perspectives, correlates (antecedents and consequences), and macroor cross-national (i.e., values and policies) influences on the division of labor.

Harold, Claudrena N. When Sunday Comes. University of Illinois Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5622/illinois/9780252043574.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
When Sunday Comes charts the explosive growth of the gospel music industry between 1968 and 1994. It contextualizes the genre’s sonic innovations, theological tensions, and political assertions within the larger framework of the socioeconomic and cultural transformations taking place in black America during the post–civil rights era. Through an examination of such gospel legends as James Cleveland, Andraé Crouch, Shirley Caesar, the Clark Sisters, the Winans, Al Green, and Kirk Franklin, among others, the book explores the ways in which gospel music has provided an outlet for African Americans to express their spiritual, cultural, and regional identities. Organized chronologically, When Sunday Comes pivots around six principal questions: What were the major sonic transformations in gospel music between 1968 and 1994, and to what extent were those transformations reflective of creative shifts within other musical genres, particularly R&B, soul, funk, disco, and hip-hop? In what ways were gospel artists shaped by larger political developments in the United States, i.e., the rise and fall of the Black Power movement as well as the growing influence of the Moral Majority? To what degree were the soundscapes of gospel music reflective of regional dynamics? How did the political economy of the entertainment industry affect gospel artists’ commercial opportunities? And did the end of de jure racial segregation alter black artists’ relationship with the predominantly white contemporary Christian music industry?

Gillespie, Thomas. Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics. SAE International, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/9781468601770.

Full text
Abstract:
A world-recognized expert in the science of vehicle dynamics, Dr. Thomas Gillespie has created an ideal reference book that has been used by engineers for 30 years, ranging from an introduction to the subject at the university level to a common sight on the desks of engineers throughout the world. As with the original printing, Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics, Revised Edition, strives to find a middle ground by balancing the need to provide detailed conceptual explanations of the engineering principles involved in the dynamics of ground vehicles with equations and example problems that clearly and concisely demonstrate how to apply such principles. A study of this book will ensure that the reader comes away with a solid foundation and is prepared to discuss the subject in detail. Ideal as much for a first course in vehicle dynamics as it is a professional reference, Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics, Revised Edition, maintains the tradition of the original by being easy to read and while receiving updates throughout in the form of modernized graphics and improved readability. Inasmuch as the first edition proved to be so popular, the Revised Edition intends to carry on that tradition for a new generation of engineers.

Abstract:
The paper starts with re-assessing Fornara’s thesis that that the account of the Persian Wars in the Histories ought to be seen in light of the intra-Hellenic conflicts of the second half of the fifth century. There is irony in that a thesis which proved path-breaking for Herodotean scholarship at the end of the twentieth century was actually part of an investigation engaged with a question of nineteenth-century scholarship. The paper then takes up Fornara’s seminal observations about Herodotus and contemporary Athens and develops them further into a direction which ultimately leads to a Herodotus very different from Fornara’s Herodotus. The Histories’ concern with contemporary events, it is proposed, also reveals Herodotus’ profound understanding of the temporal dynamics of writing history. The oblique fashion in which Herodotus comments on Zeitgeschichte reflects an awareness that it is impossible to narrate events which are still in flux. Moreover, due to the dynamics of time historical meaning is inherently instable. Acknowledging that historiography itself is part of history, Herodotus historicizes himself.

Abstract:
Approach to Dynamic Analysis in Industrial Organization This chapter offers a basic agent-based computational model of industry dynamics that allows us to study the evolving industry structure through entry and exit of heterogeneous firms. The field of modern industrial economics focuses on the structure and performance of the industry in equilibrium when firms make decisions in an optimizing way, typically with perfect foresight. The patterns that arise in the process of adjustment, induced by persistent external shocks, are often ignored for lack of a proper tool for analysis. The model introduced here induces turbulence in market structure through unpredictable shocks to the firms' technological environment. The base model presented here enables the analysis of interactive dynamics between firms as they compete in a changing environment with limited rationality and foresight. A possible extension of the base model, allowing for R&D by firms, is also discussed.

Pintchman, Tracy. The Divine Mother Comes to Michigan. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198767022.003.0015.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the nature of the goddess at the Parashakthi Temple in Pontiac, Michigan, also known in English as the Eternal Mother Temple. The Divine Mother worshiped in this temple is named as the goddess Karumāriyammaṉ, “Black Māriyammaṉ.” The discourse and practices promulgated at the Parashakthi Temple help construct a form of religiosity that is rooted in Indian Hindu vernacular goddess traditions but transforms such traditions in dynamic conversation with the temple’s American and translocative context. In Michigan, the goddess and her temple are emplaced in the American landscape; yet they simultaneously participate in a transcultural, transnational, and transhistorical economy of divine power that reveals the nature of both goddess and temple as entities that ultimately transcend the types of religious and ethnic boundaries that characterize the mundane human world.

McLaughlin, Emily. Yves Bonnefoy and Jean-Luc Nancy. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198849582.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book explores how the French poet Yves Bonnefoy (1923–2016) develops a newly affirmative, tactile, and embodied practice of poetic performance in the latter half of his career. It investigates how this shift is prompted by a conceptual change that Bonnefoy undergoes in writing Dans le leurre du seuil (1975) as he comes to perceive finitude not merely as a force of dissolution but as a dynamic of opening and exposure. Analysing how this transformation convinces the poet of the generative nature of the act of relation, this study examines how Bonnefoy no longer perceives the poem as an isolated body that reaches out to the material world from a distance but presents it as an ontological performance: an exploration of the dynamics by which linguistic, corporeal, and material forces reverberate side by side and by which worldly existence opens up in and through the poem. Using Jean-Luc Nancy’s philosophical writings to cast new light on this practice of poetic performance, this book explores how the poet and the philosopher both stress the immersive nature of this kind of textual experimentation. It investigates how they insist that the text does not speak about the world but experiments with its creative force from within, exploring the spacious dynamics of exposition that bring the poem into being, asking us to situate ourselves within these dynamics and to be opened up by them, to reimmerse ourselves in an endlessly mobile and relational world.

Boski, Pawel. Explorations in Dynamics of Symbolic Meaning with Cultural Experiments. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190879228.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
To counterbalance the predominantly verbal measures and psychometric orientation in cross-cultural psychology, this chapter proposes the concept of cultural experiment. It is a method of sampling normative behavioral scripts, exploring their inner structures of meaning, and finally designing reversals, with the expectation of disconfirmation as their ultimate validity test. Pictorial materials (videos) are the preferred methods in this approach as contextualized models of existing cultural arrangements or their modifications. Empirical evidence comes from five cross-cultural research projects spanned over 30 years. These experiments illustrate contrasts in psychological adaptation to congruent and incongruent scenarios. They provide answers when new cultural ways meet with resistance and when novelty is appreciated or tolerated. Three experiments focus on dynamics of gender role prescriptions from Polish and Scandinavian perspectives. Another study investigates person perception of culturally familiar and remote African actors. The last study explores tolerance priming through religious icons from in-group and out-group cultures.
