Abstract:
Calvin Colton (1789–1857) was an important publicist for both evangelical revivalism and the Whig party in antebellum America. Contrary to the standard historical interpretations, however, Colton did not move smoothly from the one to the other but took up political advocacy only after denouncing Yankee revivalism and its attendant social advocacy as threats to Church and State alike. At the same time his turn to episcopacy went together with a pronounced anglophobia. An analysis of Colton's rhetoric and career path reveals a consistent pattern beneath his unexpected changes and some under-explored dimensions of American religion before the Civil War.

Abstract:
Classical political economy in Great Britain was broadly supportive of education, but limited government’s role to modest assistance for charitable schools. The early classical economists in the United States, men like Thomas Cooper and Francis Wayland, in addition to supporting free trade, took this classical position with respect to education. But a more aggressive democratic claim was being advanced by the American common school movement and its supporters among Whig protectionists. The early economic tracts of William Jennison, Willard Phillips, Calvin Colton, and Henry Carey envisioned a larger role for government and advocated support for publicly financed common schools. Most notably, the leader of the common school movement, Horace Mann, built a defense for public financing based on a radical theory of property, derived from distinctly Puritan economic doctrine. If his radical positions received little support from post-Civil War mainstream economists, Mann’s practical advocacy of public taxation for public schools very much carried the day.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of a study of the effect of the LiquaFid probiotic on the colonic microbiome of pigs during the growing period. When using the real-time PCR method, it was found that the probiotic complex contributed to an increase in the total number of bacteria in the contents of the colon of the intestine relative to the group of control pigs. In experimental piglets, an increase in the proportion of normoflora representatives in the bacterial community is noted. In the structure of the normoflora of the colon calving in experimental animals, there is a quantitative increase in representatives of the genera Prevotella spp., Porphyromonas spp., Eubacterium spp., Lachnobacterium spp., Clostridium spp., Megasphaera spp., Veillonella spp., Dialister spp. and Lactobacillus spp. Against the background of the growth of representatives of the normoflora, a decrease in opportunistic and pathogenic microorganisms is observed.

Abstract:
The study was conducted to elucidate the effects of orally administered lactulose in combination with <i>Enterococcus faecium</i> on immune response of the intestinal tract in pre-ruminant calves. The mRNA expression of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and proliferation and apoptosis markers were investigated in jejunum, ileum, colon and caecum. Simmental calves were fed diets containing 1% (L1) or 3% (L3) lactulose and the probiotic strain of the genus <i>E. faecium</i>, and compared with a non treated control group. Primarily the high dose feeding with lactulose showed an effect on several mRNA gene expression parameters. In the jejunum a down-regulation of the anti-apoptotic marker Bcl-xl was determined and IL-10 mRNA gene expression was 2.6-fold up-regulated (<i>P</i> < 0.05). In the colon a 1.9-fold (<i>P</i> < 0.05) up-regulation of IL-10 and only in caecum an about 2-fold increase of TGF-β1 (<i>P</i> < 0.05) was found for both lactulose feedings. Caspase 3 was up-regulated in caecum only in the 3% lactulose treated group (<i>P</i> < 0.05). The enhanced apoptotic rate of caspase 3 seems to be associated with a decrease in crypth depth due to lactulose supplementation. The results indicated that mainly the high 3% lactulose dose in probiotic-fed calves has an affect on the intestinal immune function and on diverse apoptotic markers.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Minimally invasive colorectal surgery has demonstrated to have the same oncological results as open surgery, with better clinical outcomes. Robotic assistance is an evolution of minimally invasive technique. Purpose The study aims to present technical details and short-term oncological outcomes of robotic-assisted complete mesocolic excision (CME) with central vascular ligation (CVL) for right colon cancer. Methodology Fifty-two consecutive patients affected by right colon cancer were operated between May 2016 and February 2020 with da Vinci Xi platform. Data regarding surgical and short-term oncological outcomes were systematically collected in a colorectal specific database for statistical analysis. Results Thirty-seven (71.15%) and 15 (28.85%) patients underwent right and extended right hemicoletomy with an extracorporeal anastomosis. Median age was 55 years. Mean operative time was 182 ± 36 min. Mean blood loss was 110 ± 90 ml. Conversion rate was 3.84% (two cases). 78.84% (41 cases) were pT3 and mean number of harvested lymph nodes was 28 ± 4. 1/52 (1.92%) had a documented anastomotic leak requiring exploratory laparotomy and diversion proximal ileostomy. Surgery-related grade IIIa–IIIb Calvien Dindo morbidity were noted in 9.61% and 1.92%, respectively. Conclusion Robotic assistance allows performance of oncological adequate dissection of the right colon with radical lymphadenectomy as in open surgery, confirming the safety and oncological adequacy of this technique, with acceptable results and short-term outcomes.

Abstract:
Phytocannabinoids, compounds found in Cannabis sativa L., are used in oncology and palliative care to reduce the adverse reactions of standard therapies. Cancer patients use formulations of Cannabis sativa L. to manage the anxiety, pain, and nausea associated with cancer treatment, and there is growing evidence that some of them may exhibit anticancer properties. In this study, we tested the anticancer potential of selected cannabinoids CBD (cannabidiol) and its quinone derivative CBD-HQ (cannabidiol hydroquinone), CBG (cannabigerol) and its acid derivative CBG-A (cannabigerolic acid), as well as a combination of CBD+CBG on the colon cancer cell line SW-620. The MTT assay was used to determine the cannabinoids’ ability to induce colon cancer cell death. All cannabinoids were cytotoxic at the lowest concentration (3 μg/mL). The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) ranged from 3.90 to 8.24 μg/mL, depending on the substance. Cytotoxicity was confirmed in a 3D spheroidal cell culture with calcein and propidium iodide staining. The amount of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) was examined using a DCF-DA assay. CBG showed the lowest antioxidant activity of all the cannabinoids tested. The level of intracellular ROS decreased only by 0.7–18%. However, CBG-A induced the strongest reduction in ROS level by 31–39%. Our results suggest that cannabinoids represent an interesting research direction with great implementation potential. These preliminary results represent the beginning of research into the potential of these substances for anticancer treatment and underscore the potential for further research.

Abstract:
Mechanisms of drug resistance other than P-glycoprotein are of increasing interest as the list of newly identified members of the ABC transport family has grown. We sought to characterize the phenotype of the newly discovered ABC transporter encoded by the mitoxantrone resistance gene, MXR, also known as ABCP1 or BCRP. The pharmacodynamics of mitoxantrone and 12 other fluorescent drugs were evaluated by confocal microscopy in four multidrug-resistant human colon (S1) and breast (MCF-7) cancer cell lines. We utilized two sublines, MCF-7 AdVp3000 and S1-M1-80, and detected overexpression of MXR by PCR, immunoblot assay and immunohistochemistry. These MXR overexpressing sublines were compared to cell lines with P-glycoprotein- and MRP-mediated resistance. High levels of cross-resistance were observed for mitoxantrone, the anthracyclines, bisantrene and topotecan. Reduced levels of mitoxantrone, daunorubicin, bisantrene, topotecan, rhodamine 123 and prazosin were observed in the two sublines with high MXR expression. Neither the P-glycoprotein substrates vinblastine, paclitaxel, verapamil and calcein-AM, nor the MRP substrate calcein, were extruded from MCF-7 AdVp3000 and S1-M1-80 cells. Thus, the multidrug-resistant phenotype due to MXR expression is overlapping with, but distinct from, that due to P-glycoprotein. Further, cells that overexpress the MXR protein seem to be more resistant to mitoxantrone and topotecan than cells with P-glycoprotein-mediated multidrug resistance. Our studies suggest that the ABC half-transporter, MXR, is a potent, new mechanism for conferring multiple drug resistance. Definition of its mechanism of transport and its role in clinical oncology is required.

Abstract:
In summary, this thesis has explored the anti-cancer mechanisms of novel medicinal compounds via targeting calpains or S100A4 in the treatment of colon cancer, which could facilitate future establishment of effective medicinal compounds in the treatment of metastatic colon cancers with known molecular targets.;The incidence of colon cancer in Hong Kong and worldwide is on a rising trend, while its metastatic development is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of how tumors progress and metastasize to secondary sites, at both biological and genetic levels, could enable us to identify potential molecular targets in drug development. In the present study, we explored how manipulation of signaling pathways by targeting calpains and S100A4 could facilitate the development of anti-tumor and anti-metastatic drugs.;The study investigating drug targeting on S100A4 in both in vitro and in vivo models had shown that the pharmacological store-operated calcium channel blocker would suppress S100A4-mediated migration by weakening extracellular S100A4-mediated calcium responses. The effects on S100A4-induced metastasis formation were confirmed in vivo with reduced splenic tumor volume and decreased number of liver metastases. These results have provided new insights to correlate between S100A4 and calcium signaling, making an important step forward in characterizing the dependence of calcium homeostasis in the process of metastasis, providing a novel strategy for S100A4-mediated metastasis.;With respect to the targeting on calpains, it was discovered that total Astragalus saponins (AST) and cryptotanshinone (CPT) are effective anti-cancer agents that elicit the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response. They act by upregulating the expression of glucose-regulated protein (GRP) 78, leading to the initiation of apoptosis when the ER recovery process begins to fail. In particular, CPT caused rapid and sustained increase in cytosolic calcium in colon cancer cells that was accompanied by early GRP78 overexpression. The increase in cytosolic calcium was blocked by pre-treatment of BAPTA-AM through depletion of the ER calcium store. In consistent with these, we also confirmed that CPT significantly increased calpain activity, which could be blocked by calcium chelator or calpain inhibitors. Furthermore, a dynamic interaction between GRP78 and calpain under ER stress was unveiled during AST or CPT exposure. The degree of association was increased following prolonged ER stress, and suppressed either as the ER recovery process failed or with the presence of calpain inhibitors. Besides, inhibition of calpain activity suppressed NF-κB activation (a consequence of ER stress) and substantially enhanced the effects of CPT to promote apoptosis. More importantly, it was confirmed that the effects of calpain inhibitors to sensitize colon cancer cells to ER stress-associated apoptosis are p53-dependent. The anti-tumorigenetic effects of CPT were further demonstrated in vivo in xenografted nude mice by trageting calpains and in combination with calpain inhibitors.

Seguiranno poi commenti e conclusioni dedotte in base all’analisi e allo studio effettuato.

Abstract: Two studies were conducted to determine the effect of calcium chloride injection on the palatability traits and color stability of steaks from inside round (M. Semimembranosus) of steers supplemented with zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH). In study 1 (palatability), 466 steers were divided into two groups, non-supplemented and supplemented (8.3 mg/kg of ZH in the last 20 days of feedlot). After slaughter and cooling, 39 USDA Select grade carcasses were randomly destined for the test (non-supplemented = 19; ZH = 20). In study 2 (color stability), 20 from 39 carcasses, previously selected, were randomly destined for the test (non- supplemented = 10, ZH = 10). The inside round of both half-carcasses were sent to the laboratory where they were alternately selected to serve as non-injected or injected with calcium chloride (5 % with 200 mM CaCl2 solution). In study 1 it were evaluated the sarcomere length, myofibrillar fragmentation index, instrumental tenderness (shear force by Warner Bratzler - WBSF) and sensory traits of inside round steaks aged up to 28 days. In study 2 it were evaluated the proximate composition, metmyoglobin reducing activity, visual and instrumental color and lipid oxidation (TBARS) of inside round steaks aged up to 21 days followed by exposure in the display for 4 days. In study 1 there is no difference (P > 0.05) in treatments with or without ZH for sarcomere length. Samples of not ZH supplemented animals and injected samples had higher (P < 0.05) myofibrillar fragmentation index, than supplemented and non-injected, respectively. The ZH supplementation did not affect (P > 0.05) the losses during aging and cooking. The CaCl2 injection increased (P < 0.05) both losses. The use of ZH increased (P > 0.05) WBSF of inside round steaks aged 7 d, however samples aged 14 d did not differ (P > 0.05). The CaCl2 injection in samples from ZH supplemented steers cancelled (P > 0.05) the difference for WBSF after 7 d of aging and reduced (P < 0.05) WBSF in samples from non-supplemented. The ZH did not affect (P > 0.05) sensory traits of steaks aged 14 and 21 d. Injected samples were more tender (P < 0.05) than non-injected after 14 d aging, however there was no difference (P > 0.05) in steaks aged 21 d for sensory traits. In study 2 ZH steaks were lighter cherry red, had higher L* values, and had lower discoloration scores (P < 0.05). At the end of display, ZH steaks had greater (P < 0.05) a* and b* values than non-supplemented. CaCl2 injection resulted in redder beef color, and increased discoloration scores (P < 0.05) in samples aged 14 and 21 d, however it did not affect color traits on d 7 (P > 0.05). L* values were not affected by CaCl2 (P > 0.05), but at the end of display, injected samples had lower a* and b* values than noninjected samples (P < 0.05). Increasing aging and display time resulted in redder color and greater discoloration scores (P < 0.05). Moreover aging and display time decreased (P < 0.05) a* and b* values from both treatments of the two sources of variation. Lipid oxidation, evaluated by TBARS, was not affected by ZH (P > 0.05). The CaCl2 injection increased (P < 0.05) TBARS values. The ZH supplementation decreased tenderness of inside round steaks, however 14 d aging, or 7 d aging combined with CaCl2 injection, can even objective tenderness means, and in the last one, there is no effect in color traits due to CaCl2 injection, as it happens on d 14 and 21 of aging

Abstract:

Calebin-A is a curcuminoids compound isolated from turmeric. Previous studies indicated that calebin-A inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis in drug-resistant human gastric cancer cells and also restrain the proliferation of human hepatoma cell line HepG2 cells; however, the molecular mechanism of anti-cancer activity in colon cancer remains unclear. Therefore, the objectives of research are to study the anti-cancer efficacy of calebin-A and its underlying molecular mechanism. Furthermore, we use xenograft animal model to further investigate the anti-tumor effect of calebin-A. The results showed calebin-A was able to inhibit colon cancer cells growth and induced cell cycle to arrest in S and G2/M phase. At the molecular levels, calebin-A exhibited the anti-cancer ability by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and triggering DNA damage response as evidenced by flow cytometry and comet assay. Western blot analysis showed calebin-A up-regulation of phosphorylation of H2AX, chk1, chk2, p53 and p53, p21 protein levels, decreased cdc25A, cyclinB, cyclinA and cdc2 protein levels. Moreover, pretreatment of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) reversed the cell cycle population, indicated ROS might involve in the cell cycle arrest signaling pathway caused by the toxic of calebin-A. In the xenograft model, we evaluated the anti-tumor ability of calebin-A on HCT116 tumor xenografts in vivo. Intraperitoneal injection of calebin-A (25 mg/kg) to nude mice significantly decreased tumor volume as well as reduced tumor size and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) protein by Hematoxylin & Eosin (HE) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) stain, respectively. These results suggested calebin-A with potent anti-cancer effect in vitro and in vivo, could provided a molecular basis for the development of colon cancer chemopreventive agent.

Abstract:
Beginning with a discussion of the historical criticisms of American protectionism, this chapter moves quickly into a systematic review of the origins and arguments of protectionist political economy. The popularity and political influence of protectionism is indicated by the emergence of America as a bastion of nineteenth-century tariffs. Protectionism dominated nineteenth-century American economic discourse and was the essential expression of antebellum hybrid capitalism. By incorporating American exceptionalism, encouraging industrialization, celebrating the harmony between capital and labor, and pursuing methodological and theoretical values that were accepted across American culture, protectionism is presented as the most authentic manifestation of the antebellum economic mind. The economic ideologies of Alexander Hamilton, Matthew Carey, Daniel Raymond, Calvin Colton, and Friedrich List are explored. Each emphasized a nationalist concern in political economy, connecting political independence, especially from Britain, to national economic sovereignty.

"The Accidental March." In The Prestes Column, 32–50. Duke University Press, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478059080-003.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 traces the early phase of the rebel movement, showing that, although its mythology claims that the column always intended to march into Brazil's interior, the inland route was accidental: once most of the original São Paulo rebels stopped fighting and went into exile, the column turned north only when federal troops blocked the path to Rio de Janeiro. Highlighting the accidental nature of the march is vital to foreground the mythologizing that, in the years and decades to come, would depict the column as a heroic quest to liberate the interior. More than just calling attention to a misleading narrative in the rebel legend, such an intervention helps explain how the symbolism of Brazil's interior could have a profound real-world impact—in this case, shaping the route and legitimacy of a military campaign.

Abstract Chapter 7 centers insights of high schoolers and teachers in order to reimagine the potential of civic education within our schools. These reflections from teachers and students immersed in social studies courses on a daily basis suggest that our best hope for ensuring more politically empowering civic learning experiences must draw from the insights or those actively working within and beyond political institutions to secure fundamental democratic ideals. Teacher preparation programs and neighborhood-level institutions can play a critical role in helping educators develop these critical categories of knowledge. Of course, in calling for investment in civic education, we must ensure that we are also investing in our schools. Throughout the United States, widespread school closures are wearing away at the civic infrastructures of entire communities and undermining pluralist democratic ideals. Investing in civic education means reinvesting in our schools, our neighborhoods, and our democracy.

Abstract:
Abstract Power and bring all the Assistants under his subjection.” The meeting broke up without any resolution, but in the following month the ministers evidently succeeded in calming the passions of the two, with Winthrop making a contribution toward establishing a minister in Newtown, which Dudley graciously returned. And, according to Winthrop, “notwithstanding the heat of contention which had been between the Governor and Deputy, yet they usually met about their affairs without any appearance of any breach or discontent.”36 Both men being loving fathers, the marriage around this time of Winthrop ‘s daughter, Mary, to Dudley ‘s son Samuel must have helped to bring the two together, though Winthrop would comment a year later that “some differences fell out still now and then between the Governor and the Deputy,” which were always soon healed. The stability of the colony was still fragile, however. Though resembling the forms of English government, the institutions of the Bay colony were not enhanced by long tradition, and none of the colony ‘s leaders came from the highest levels of English society to which the settlers had been taught to defer. One critic of the Court of Assistants, Thomas Dexter, complained that it was a “captious government [that] will bring all to nought” and further observed, speaking of Winthrop, “that the best of them was but an attorney.” Dexter had migrated in 1630 and had a history of challenging authority and suing his neighbors.

Speakers of non-standard varieties of French also like to eat and have their own words for food. But can gastronomy be considered as a major theme in slang? This paper tries to answer this question by analysing argot and unconventional French dictionaries (Colin et al. 2006, Goudaillier 2001, Tengour 2013, Perret 2002) and works by specialists such as Calvet and Robert L’Argenton. Slang varieties dealt with range from traditional French slang to contemporary suburban slang („français contemporain des cités”) and include butchers’ slang („louchébem”) and bakers’ jargon. The conclusion also suggests some ideas on teaching French as a foreign language.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the varied discriminatory performances of color blindness by calling attention to their profound irony, that is, how performances of color blindness seemingly embrace disability and often profess racial equality yet ultimately perpetuate racism and ableism. I argue that what sustains the disabilities of the color line—anti-Black acts of violence, trauma, and stigmatization—are the doctrine and practice of color blindness: ableist performances of disability that have been deeply injurious to Black lives in the past and in the present. To understand the full import of color blindness, the chapter examines not only the deployment of color-blind constitutionalism within the law by focusing on what Justice Marshall Harlan might have meant by using the term “color-blind” in his dissent of Plessy v. Ferguson but also the cultivation of color blindness within national culture by focusing on the disabling and deadly consequences of color blindness in the cases of Emmett Till and Eric Garner, two disabled, Black males whose intersectional identities made them vulnerable to state and vigilante violence.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the origins and evolution of settler identity in colonial Algeria. Dealing with the years between 1830 and 1939, it examines the process by which Europeans of diverse origins gradually merged into a distinct people, the French of Algeria. The settlers defined themselves in opposition to the native Arabs and Berbers. The Jews of Algeria were in-between: non-Muslims caught between the Christian and Muslim inhabitants of the colony. Even before World War II, native intellectuals and religious leaders were calling for liberal reforms. Social conditions (residential segregation, inequality in education, linguistic and religious differences, and avoidance of mixed marriages) kept colonizer and colonized apart. The Europeans of Algeria considered themselves French, but their identification with the metropole remained contingent.

Abstract:
The year 2015 saw historic levels of refugee movements out of Syria, Iraq, and North Africa to Europe, which coincided chronologically with terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino. The Republican presidential nomination campaign singled out refugees from Syria and Iraq as existential threats, and the “Islamophobia Industry” mainstreamed an anti-Muslim discourse in the presidential primary, naming Arab refugees as a potential fifth column, leading to the passage of the American Security Against Foreign Enemies Act (HR 4038). The seismic sociopolitical shifts of 2015 shaped the experience of belonging among Iraqi refugee youths. Iraqi youths employed multiple strategies in confronting the disturbing ways in which they were being profiled in the public arena. One important strategy was in calling attention to a counternarrative—the proactive and positive ways that the local Muslim and Arab community was reaching out across cultural and religious barriers to mobilize against hate.

Abstract:
Abstract Statistics have shown that the main reason for traffic accidents is human error. Modern vehicles are equipped to protect occupants in the event of a crash. The latest advanced vehicles come with driver behavior monitoring systems in recent years, and many have been proven to be effective systems in the prevention of accidents. However, these systems do not provide a complete solution and can only detect driver fatigue or driver distraction. This project aims to build an AI model for sensing the distraction of drivers and identifying the kind of distraction using the Kinect sensor and the Brio camera and reorient driver’s attention on driving. For this, the system is divided into three sub-segments; calling arm position (arms up or down, arms right or left), facial expressions (blinking and mouth), and head orientation. Each segment develops important info for gauging the distraction of a driver based on the depth mapping of data and color from the Kinect sensor and Brio camera respectively. Testing on a driving simulator is completed on 4 different drivers of diverse ethnicity, sex, and age along with over 240 mins of recorded material. Since all the segments were recorded and prepared separately, they can further be taken to build different outcomes and can be implemented for real car systems.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The rapid growth in the prevalence of smart devices has created a significant demand for workforces with knowledge and experience in user-centered design. The new emerging designers are expected to be familiar with practical design research methods while delivering competitive visual results. An interdisciplinary pedagogical approach to design teaching can help students connect the practice of psychology, human factors, and graphic design. In this presentation, we will discuss our practical methods of forming an interdisciplinary design research team to work on a hands-on design challenge involving academia and industry for the usability of specialized medical devices. Our research focuses on enhancing the usability of Environmental Control Units (ECU) in the VA Hospital healthcare system. An ECU is a digital tablet with specific functionality to help patients with spinal cord injury disabilities to overcome their common day-to-day challenges such as: making a phone call or calling the nurse/help, switching on/off the lights, adjusting the bed, etc. This device has four modes of interaction: touch-based, sip-and-puff (pneumatic tube), eye-tracking, and voice-control. Veterans with SCI/D typically find ECUs useful, yet previous research has identified dozens of usability issues ranging from relatively minor or cosmetic to catastrophic (Hancock et al., 2020; Etingen et al., 2017). This multidisciplinary research project is ongoing between California State University Long Beach, the Spinal Cord Injuries and Disorders (SCI/D) Center at the Long Beach VA Hospital, and the device manufacturer, Accessibility Services, Inc.This research started in 2019 with heuristic analyses of the touch-based and eye-tracking modalities of the ECU device (Hancock et al., 2020a; Hancock et al., 2020b). Based on the heuristic evaluation findings, the team made a Beta version with improvements. The team were prepared to conduct A/B usability testing, but due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, accessing the hospital grounds got limited. In the summer of 2020, the design team developed a fully online digital prototype of the ECU interface to conduct remote A/B usability testing with a neurotypical population (i.e., CSULB students). This research has brought together students from graphic design and psychology to engage in a hands-on user-centered design project. Students from both practices received training to conduct remote user-testing sessions and post-processing the resulting data. Currently, the team is collecting data from its ongoing A/B testing between the Alpha and Beta versions of the interface. In the meantime, the team has begun to draft a new design (Omega version) based on the current and emerging findings to make design improvement suggestions to the device manufacturer. This paper will discuss how interdisciplinary design research creates unique opportunities for students in graphic design to learn human-factors psychology and how various design choices for interface features such as color, font, size, etc. will affect its usability and user experience outcomes. In contrast, students in psychology human factors learn about aesthetics and practical design solutions. As the resulting systems are for actual use by veterans with spinal cord injuries and disorders in collaboration with a government partner (the VA), the students also gain valuable service learning experience.

Abstract:
The present work involves the development of a learning model for the analysis of data from telecommunication and social networks for devices that make voice calls and data sessions, using Business Intelligence concepts and tools. The paper has a multi/interdisciplinary character, calling for e-learning, telecommunication, database, programming, IT applications and social/business networks. Business Intelligence (BI) refers to those data analysis systems by integrating them into a platform that allows the association of information through data transformation operations. For this analysis to be effective, it is necessary to identify and define the required quality indicators (KPIs: Key Performance Indicators) and the desired associations with them, which can be made in the BI platform. The information extraction operations can be done in the SQL queries area or when data is uploaded to the BI platform, taking into account the following factors: database queries efficiency, transformation efficiency at BI platform level, and available hardware capacity for calculations. There is a balance between the volume of SQL queries, taking into account the complexity of the queries (number and type of joins) and the size of the files to be imported into the platform. Consideration may also be given to how new data is added to source files for the BI platform. The applications developed for this purpose allow the analysis of KPIs by applying filters that make easier to understand the general problems of an application and identify network areas where possible degradation or shortcomings are observed. Developing a solution for analyzing these aspects of radio measurements and comparing operators on various criteria for voice and data and application testing comes as a response to the need to be able to analyze and interpret a huge amount of data accumulated over very long periods (years) and to identify the main elements that can lead to improved network performance. BI analysis is addressed to business managerial levels for discovery of large deficiencies without analyzing each test, satisfying the need for interaction by allocating a minimum number of parameters associated with KPIs so that analysis and decisions taken consequently have a high impact for a company benefits. BI analysis is predominantly conducted in the telecommunications field, but the same principles can be used in other areas, and the way of working can be adapted to serve as a strong starting point in any type of analysis for which information is available at the level of a database. In order to be able to apply the BI analysis tools, databases containing information specific to the 2G, 3G and 4G technologies (GSM, WCDMA and LTE) have been developed. Databases contain tables populated with metrics representing information similar to those collected during telecommunication measurements (data generation is done through popular spreadsheet scripts with Excel support). Multiple SQL queries for denormalizing, aggregating, and transforming data have also been developed for use as a data source in the KPIs analysis, comparison, and interpretation process. In order to apply these data transformation queries in a format that facilitates further BI analysis, a C# application that exports the new content to a predefined area is made available to the BI environment (in text format). The new C# content is loaded into the QLIK Sense Desktop platform, a BI development environment where another set of data transformations, (defining legends to create geo-location features for elements) is loaded in this environment. The next step is to develop specific formulas, taking into account the new available structure to obtain KPIs with expected values and views for post-denormalization analysis. Two dashboards were developed for this purpose: voice and data tests. Configuring the development environment involves setting the connection to the location where the new content is placed, uploading these data, modifying them, creating formulas, identifying causes of value-based telecoms errors, creating a range for radio measurement values, and creating functions for geo-location of data using QLIK script syntax. It is defined a graphical interface by creating, where necessary, maps of geo-tagged data, filters, graphs, pivot tables, pie-charts, histograms, etc. across multiple display sheets, organized to contain the information specific to a particular analysis, thereby creating an analytical context in which the information required for use in the analysis is arranged adjacent, in the form of filters or graphs, the results being easier to interpret by introducing color coding formulas. The definition of special formulas and their application uses KPIs, and their development is carried out with a language specific to the development environment: QLIK Sense Desktop. Part of analyzing data in a BI environment is to interpret data and various configurations. Depending on who accesses such an environment, one can configure (in the web version) different access modes and set up visible information for each user so that a manager can access general performance sheets and an RF engineer can access specific performance sheets, both of which being designed to enhance the ability of each to interpret, decide, and improve the desired performance. Another important aspect is the low analysis time, due to the fact that the data automatically undergoes a transformation that initially had to be manually adapted. Automatic correlations that may go unnoticed, and there is also the ability to adapt and change over time. Increased efficiency comes from the fact that uncorrelated information in the database becomes correlated. BI applications refresh after each selected criterion so that the same graph shows different information if a single operator/service is selected. The paper contains detailed BI complex analysis examples for the video player in social networks: YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. In the BI environment, possible causes for the effects observed in the operations are performed, resulting in an easier interpretation of the results. This information can be valuable to departments such as Marketing/Sales, Network Operations Center, Optimization/Planning, etc. Data analysis by using a BI platform is useful when data sources are not directly correlated, allowing optimized visualization and identification of KPIs performance and metrics specifically defined for fast and efficient handling of data specific to mobile telecom operators and social networks or business networks.

Abstract:
In September 2006 an outbreak of 'Bluetongue like' disease struck the cattle herds in Israel. Over 100 dairy and beef cattle herds were affected. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) (an Orbivirusclosely related to bluetongue virus (BTV)), was isolated from samples collected from several herds during the outbreaks. Following are the aims of the study and summary of the results: which up until now were published in 6 articles in peer-reviewed journals. Three more articles are still under preparation: 1. To identify the origin of the virus: The virus identified was fully sequenced and compared with the sequences available in the GenBank. It appeared that while gene segment L2 was clustered with EHDV-7 isolated in Australia, most of the other segments were clustered with EHDV-6 isolates from South-Africa and Bahrain. This may suggest that the strain which affected Israel on 2006 may have been related to similar outbreaks which occurred in north-Africa at the same year and could also be a result of reassortment with an Australian strain (Wilson et al. article in preparation). Analysis of the serological results from Israel demonstrated that cows and calves were similarly positive as opposed to BTV for which seropositivity in cows was significantly higher than in calves. This finding also supports the hypothesis that the 2006 EHD outbreak in Israel was an incursive event and the virus was not present in Israel before this outbreak (Kedmi et al. Veterinary Journal, 2011) 2. To identify the vectors of this virus: In the US, Culicoides sonorensis was found as an efficient vector of EHDV as the virus was transmitted by midges fed on infected white tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileusvirginianus) to susceptible WTD (Ruder et al. Parasites and Vectors, 2012). We also examined the effect of temperature on replication of EHDV-7 in C. sonorensis and demonstrated that the time to detection of potentially competent midges decreased with increasing temperature (Ruder et al. in preparation). Although multiple attempts were made, we failed to evaluate wild-caught Culicoidesinsignisas a potential vector for EHDV-7; however, our finding that C. sonorensis is a competent vector is far more significant because this species is widespread in the U.S. As for Israeli Culicoides spp. the main species caught near farms affected during the outbreaks were C. imicolaand C. oxystoma. The vector competence studies performed in Israel were in a smaller scale than in the US due to lack of a laboratory colony of these species and due to lack of facilities to infect animals with vector borne diseases. However, we found both species to be susceptible for infection by EHDV. For C. oxystoma, 1/3 of the Culicoidesinfected were positive 11 days post feeding. 3. To identify the host and environmental factors influencing the level of exposure to EHDV, its spread and its associated morbidity: Analysis of the cattle morbidity in Israel showed that the disease resulted in an average loss of over 200 kg milk per cow in herds affected during September 2006 and 1.42% excess mortality in heavily infected herds (Kedmi et al. Journal of Dairy Science, 2010). Outbreak investigation showed that winds played a significant role in virus spread during the 2006 outbreak (Kedmi et al. Preventive Veterinary Medicine, 2010). Further studies showed that both sheep (Kedmi et al. Veterinary Microbiology, 2011) and wild ruminants did not play a significant role in virus spread in Israel (Kedmi et al. article in preparation). Clinical studies in WTD showed that this species is highly susceptibile to EHDV-7 infection and disease (Ruder et al. Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 2012). Experimental infection of Holstein cattle (cows and calves) yielded subclinical viremia (Ruder et al. in preparation). The findings of this study, which resulted in 6 articles, published in peer reviewed journals and 4 more articles which are in preparation, contributed to the dairy industry in Israel by defining the main factors associated with disease spread and assessment of disease impact. In the US, we demonstrated that sufficient conditions exist for potential virus establishment if EHDV-7 were introduced. The significant knowledge gained through this study will enable better decision making regarding prevention and control measures for EHDV and similar viruses, such as BTV.
