HOW TO MASTER THE ABUNDANCE OF COLOURS ON THE PAINTER’S PALETTE, OR A STEP TOWARDS THE TERMINOLOGICAL LIST OFTERMS RELATED TO COLOURS Colour as a subject has led to numerous studies in various disciplines such as physics, psychology, chemistry or history of art, to name a few. In the field of linguistics, the names of colours have been analysed from different points of view but all those works concerned mostly the words related to colours used in the general language. The aim of the present paper is to focus on the terms related to colours used in history of art texts, and to show the unexpected complexity of such terminology. After presenting the definitions of colour we will describe two different aspects of French terminology related to colour: firstly, the forms of terms from the point of view of their morphological and semantic motivation, and secondly, the cultural and historical reasons of such linguistic abundance and complexity of the colours’ terminology.

The present article focuses on the peculiarities of the usage of colour terminology in advertisements. We live in a colourful world and there are great many colour words to describe it. We also live in a world where advertisement has become an accompanying phenomenon of our everyday life. It is obvious that the language of advertising has its specific features and it seems worth trying to reveal the role and the meaning of the colours used in advertisements. Colour terms are known to be linguistic universals which have certain associations attached to each of them. We may suppose that the colours that are mostly used in the advertisements are the basic colour terms. The spheres where we expect to find wider usage of colour terms should be the ones connected with fashion industry.

The present paper attempts to investigate colour words and phrases which give a special flavour to Maritime and Naval Terminology in English. It is based on a list of the most common words and phrases excerpted from specialized dictionaries and strives to systematize them using the lexico-semantic method. Bearing in mind their particular status in language it is found that colour words abound with figurative meanings and give rise to both metonymy and metaphor. The findings in this study can be applicable when teaching English maritime and naval terminology.

It has often been suggested that terms are not prone to variation. Moreover, many standardizing organizations and terminology textbooks take a prescriptive approach to term formation and use in which they disparage variation. However, we believe that variation is not due to arbitrariness or carelessness, but rather that it is well-motivated and useful in expert discourse. We hypothesize that multidimensional classification is one of the determining factors behind term choice and we present an empirical study of the influence of multidimensional classification on term use in which we examine variant terms in context in a one-million word corpus in the specialized subject field of optical scanning technology.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on multicompound English economic terms with colorative components that constitute a large lexis group, creating constant challenges for translators of economic literature. The introductory part briefly outlines the cognitive aspects of terminology research and discusses advantages of descriptive approach toward economic terminology. Then, it is demonstrated that terminology displays emotive and expressive content by means of connotations as well as such tools as colour-related metaphors. The general trend within this terminological group is the diversity of metaphorical associations that influenced term-formation and the diversity of translating keys that can give the right semantic insight to the translator. Finally, colorative term compounds in economic terminology are regarded as a challenge posed in the context of translation.

In this study, we linguistically investigated Serbian colour terminology. We administrated colourterm elicitation task aiming to establish the inventory of basic colour terms (BCTs) in the Serbian language and, in particular, to investigate the salience and the status of colour terms teget ?dark blue? and bordo ?dark red?. Native speakers of Serbian (N = 83) participated in a list task (Morgan & Corbett, 1989), in which they had to list as many Serbian colour terms as possible during five minutes. Based on the collected data, we calculated frequency of each term, its mean position and two indexes of salience. Results showed that 11 Serbian most salient colour terms correspond to the eleven BCTs found by Berlin and Kay (1969), namely, plavo ?blue?, crveno ?red?, zuto ?yellow?, zeleno ?green?, crno ?black?, belo ?white?, ljubicasto ?purple?, narandzasto ?orange?, sivo ?grey?, roze ?pink?, and braon ?brown?, but that basic status of braon needs to be further examined. Teget ?dark blue? and bordo ?dark red?, along with tirkizno ?turquoise? and oker ?ochre? were frequently used, with higher salience indices than other non-BCTs. Further research is needed to find out whether teget and bordo meet criteria of BCTs in the Serbian language.

“Gold” is a colour indicating the colour of an object. It is a unique colour word which represents the colour of gold. From ancient to the present, “gold” is a common Chinese word which is frequently used in the literature. Furthermore, “gold” is the symbol of goodness in the traditional Chinese society. Nowadays, “gold” represents noble, luxury, wealth, hope, etc in the cultural connotation. This dissertation consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the research background, purpose of the topic and key points of the study. The second chapter is divided into three parts. In the first part, it begins to look for the semantic origin of the colour word “gold” by analyzing its original meaning, aboriginal meaning and quotative meaning. In the second part, it demonstrates the development of cultural connotation in China and elaborates the cultural connotation in the present Chinese society. In the third part, the colour word “gold” is compared with the colour words “yellow” and “red” to identify their differences and similarities of cultural connotations. In the third chapter, it mainly focuses on phraseology function of “gold” and its combinations. Meanwhile, the aspects of word-formation, syntactical functions, sentence structure of “gold” and its combinations will be discussed. The fourth chapter analyzes the usage and effect of “gold” and its combinations with regard to rhetoric. It also illustrates and explains the features of usage and rhetorical effects on seven categories of figures of speech which are fairly typical. The last chapter is the conclusion of the whole dissertation. “Gold” is a very unique colour word which differentiates from other colour words such as “red”, “yellow” and so on. “Gold” has been representing a positive image from the past, even nowadays, “gold” is still one of the most glamorous colours.

This study aims at examining the use of color word “qing” and its combinations in Chinese language. “Qing” is one of the earliest appeared color words in Chinese language. It is a unique color word which can represent the colors of green, blue, black and white. Due to its complex meaning, it is difficult to understand which color does “qing” stand for in different cases. On the other hand, “qing” is a frequently used color word in both ancient and modern Chinese language. Words and phrases formed by “qing” can express symbolic meanings other than color. To begin with, the first chapter introduces the research background, objectives and key points of the study. In the second chapter, the origin, inherent and extended meaning, as well as the combinations of “qing” and other color words will be analyzed. Apart from their meanings, the grammatical characteristics are also important to a comprehensive study of “qing” and its combinations. In the third chapter, “qing” and its combinations will be discussed in the aspects of word-formation, syntactical functions and sentence structure. The fourth chapter is about the usage and effect of “qing” and its combinations with regard to rhetoric. Examples of “qing” and its combinations which create specific rhetorical effects in Chinese literature were discussed. The last chapter serves as a conclusion, highlighting the research results of this study. This dissertation attempts to discuss “qing” and its combinations in different angles to provide nutrition to the overall study of “qing”.

Este trabajo es una revisión crítica de 3 teorías lingüísticas sobre la categorización de los sistemas de colores en las lenguas del mundo. Los estudios examinados en este trabajo tratan de resolver la duda sobre por qué los hablantes de una lengua determinada segmentan el espectro visual con diferentes términos cromáticos. En primer lugar, se revisa el estudio de Berlin & Kay, Basic Color Terms (1969), donde se propone una serie de universales semánticos, además de añadir ciertas categorías para identificar los términos que expresan colores y un modelo evolutivo que corresponde a la cantidad de términos que tiene la lengua estudiada. En segundo lugar, se revisan las ideas principales de la teoría neurofisiológica (Kay & McDaniel 1978) y, por último, se examinan las ideas de Anna Wierzbicka (2005), quien propone una nueva forma para hablar sobre colores dentro del marco de la teoría de Metalenguaje Semántico Natural propuesta por ella (Wierzbicka 1972; Goddard 2006).

A presente tese tem como objeto de estudo a terminologia da Fauna e da Flora cuja formação envolve o uso do vocabulário das cores. Nosso estudo abrange dois temas gerais: por um lado, a contribuição dos nomes de cores para a variação denominativa em terminologia a partir de uma perspectiva interlinguística; por outro, a descrição de tais variantes em uma obra lexicográfica especializada e multilíngue. A fim de delimitar a nossa pesquisa, concentramo-nos na análise de dois subdomínios da Biologia: a Botânica, especificamente as Angiospermas (monocotiledôneas e eudicotiledôneas), e a Zoologia, exclusivamente os Vertebrados (peixes, anfíbios, répteis, aves e mamíferos). Dessa forma, visamos, em primeiro lugar, ampliar o Dicionário Onomasiológico de Expressões Cromáticas da Fauna e Flora por meio da inserção em sua microestrutura dos correspondentes das palavras-entrada em línguas inglesa e italiana. Seguindo a metodologia proposta em nosso Mestrado (MARTINS, 2013), utilizamos o Corpus Web para a busca e validação dos correspondentes. Em segundo, uma vez verificada a existência de correspondentes para cada entrada, realizamos sua análise estrutural, observando o papel desses itens para a divulgação dos conceitos da Fauna e da Flora em outras culturas. Em terceiro, examinamos as possíveis causas que atuam na formação de tais unidades e que propiciam ou não a escolha do item cor nas línguas em estudo, isto é, português, inglês e italiano. Por último, ainda em relação à obra lexicográfica, propomos formular a metodologia mais adequada para a implementação de uma plataforma on-line que contribuirá para minimizar as divergências terminológicas nessa área, para a normatização de conceitos e para o estabelecimento da comunicação entre culturas. Enfatizamos que o nosso interesse é motivado pelo papel ativo dos nomes de cores na expansão do léxico e a investigação dessa fatia lexical é uma forma de evidenciar o uso dos nomes de cores para a difusão da terminologia da Fauna e da Flora. Finalmente, visamos contribuir qualitativamente, tanto no aspecto teórico (por meio das reflexões apresentadas) quanto no metodológico, para o âmbito das pesquisas que se limitam ao estudo do léxico, bem como para o conjunto das obras lexicográficas produzidas no Brasil.
The present thesis has as its object of study the terminology of Fauna and Flora composed by color names. Hence, it deals with two major themes: on one hand, the contribution of color names to the denominative variation in Terminology from a interlinguistic perspective; on the other, the description of such variants in a multilingual and specialized lexicographical work. In order to delimit our research, we concentrate our analysis on two subdomains of Biology: Botany, specifically the Angiosperms (monocotyledons and dicotyledons), and Zoology, specifically the Vertebrates (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals). In this manner, it aims, firstly, to extend the Onomasiological Dictionary of Chromatic Phrases of Fauna and Flora by inserting in the microstructure the equivalents of the entries in English and Italian languages. Following the methodology proposed in a prior research (MARTINS, 2013), we use the Corpus Web to collect and validate the equivalents. Secondly, once checked the existence of equivalents for each entry, it intends to realize their structural analysis, observing the role of these denominative variants to the propagation of Fauna and Flora concepts in other cultures. Thirdly, examining the probable causes that actuate in the formation of such units and that propitiate or not the choice of the color name in the languages in study, i.e., Portuguese, English and Italian. Finally, still regarding the lexicographical work, we propose to formulate an appropriate methodology for the implementation of an on-line platform that will contribute to minimize terminological variances in this area, to concepts normalization, as well as to the communication among cultures. We would like to emphasize that our interest is motivated by the active role of color names in the expansion of the lexicon and the study of this vocabulary demonstrates the importance of color names to the diffusion of Fauna and Flora terminology. To sum up, we expect to contribute qualitatively, as in the theoretical aspect (by means of the reflections presented in the following pages) as in the methodological aspect, to the range of the lexical studies, as well as to the set of lexicographical works produced in Brazil.

Abstract:
The city of Philippi was founded as a Roman military colony in 42 BC, directly following one of the largest battles of antiquity, the civil war battle of Philippi. This study shows that one hundred years later, at the time of writing of Paul’s letter to the Philippians, the identity of the city was still deeply connected to its military history. The apostle Paul found in the historical and sociological ties of the Philippians with the military reasons for drafting his letter in a rhetorical arrangement similar to the historical reports of commander’s speeches to his assembled troops before battle. Not only does the vocabulary of Paul’s ethical commands parallel the general’s harangues, as has been previously pointed out by Biblical scholarship, but in Paul’s letter one also finds correspondences to the three largest motifs of the general’s speeches: the objective of the war, the confidence for victory and the rewards for courage and obedience. The major unified theme of Philippians is the mutual military-partnership for the advance of the gospel in a hostile context (Phil. 1:7-12; 1:20; 2:19-24; 2:25-30; 3:12-15; 4:3; 4:10-19). Paul in his letter to the Philippians uses consistently military imagery – and not once athletic imagery, as typically assumed by exegetical scholars – to demonstrate that the courageous sharing of the faith will always result in victory for the one who proclaims Christ. This victory is guaranteed through the unsurpassable abilities of the supreme general, Jesus Christ, whose death on the cross and whose resurrection is portrayed as a military victory and whose exaltation by God the Father acknowledges Christ as the victorious general in an universal extent (Phil. 2:8-11). The victory of the gospel campaign is further guaranteed by the LORD’s initiation of the war for the spread of the faith and by His presence with those who fight in His behalf for the spread of the good news (Phil. 1:5-7; 2:12-13; 2:14-15; 3:1; 4:4). Victory in the Philippian context means either the reception of the gospel by unbelievers or the death of the messenger on account of rejection of and opposition to the gospel; the suffering of the emissary of the gospel serves to glorify Christ and it is compensated by the superior enjoyment of Christ at the resurrection (Phil. 1:19-25). The reward, which God promises to the messenger of the gospel is several times stated in Philippians to be the exalted experience of fellowship with Christ at the resurrection (Phil. 1:21; 3:8-11; 3:20-21; 4:3). The reading of Philippians in light of the appropriation of military terminology confirms that Paul’s main purpose in writing Philippians is to encourage his partners to continue to take risks, to be unafraid of suffering and to make sacrifices in order to boldly testify about Christ and to continue to financially contribute to the mission of spreading the faith. The book of Philippians challenges the contemporary self-centred prosperity culture of the church to take risks and make sacrifices for the proclamation of Christ to unbelievers, sacrifices, which are supremely compensated by a life for the glory of Christ and the surpassing promise of the enjoyment of the glory of God in His Son Christ Jesus.

Published in 1908, Herbert Ives’ An Experimental Study of the Lippmann Colour Photograph translated Gabriel Lippmann’s work from French to English while modernising the terminology for the twentieth-century optical physicist. In this article, I explain how Herbert Ives’ paper, established Lippmann’s process within the discipline of physics, but concealed the practical assistance offered to Lippmann by the industrialist Lumière brothers. I also explore the sceptical criticisms of his father, American artisan-inventor Frederic Ives whose own colour process competed with Lippmann’s for display and publicity. At the end of the nineteenth century, these competing processes exemplified divisions between artisanphotographers and professional experimenters. Whereas Frederic Ives relied solely on patents and demonstrations to promote his inventions both in the USA and in Europe, Lippmann deployed wave theory to an audience at the Académie des Sciences in Paris.

Abstract:
Sienkiewicz had to dress the characters of Quo vadis in period garments. Their descriptions rarely appear, but they are highly suggestive of how the author understood ancient Rome and tried to recreate it in his work. Sienkiewicz gives detailed descriptions of costumes only when they concern the most important figures in his novel, or if clothing plays an important role in the plot. The rest of the protagonists are treated as collective characters whose clothing is identified only in terms of togas, stolae, or the robes of the poor. Beside the ubiquitous tunic, other Latin names of clothing primarily indicate the status of characters or are mentioned when Sienkiewicz uses clothes to disguise them. In those cases, the ubiquitous tunic receives an adjectival descriptor of colour or shade, which in the world of Quo vadis has a differentiating function. The names of the characters’ outfits have their origins in Roman literature. The terms introduced in the novel allow for an easy recreation of the author’s reading list, which consists of the basic works of a classical education—Cicero, Suetonius, Plutarch, Pliny, Horace, Propertius, Juvenal, Martial. Sometimes Sienkiewicz mixes his classical terminology with those of ecclesiastical Latin, creating an unintendedly humorous effect. However, the writer’s use of costume colour seems to have been inspired by the paintings of Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Henryk Siemiradzki. This chapter will explore the very close relationship between text and paintings, and utilizes Sienkiewicz’s colour coding to pinpoint some of the images on which he drew.

Abstract:
The promise of cheap and widely available 3D printers may be one of the best and worst aspects of Additive Manufacturing (AM). A non-technical consumer may pay significantly more for a 3D printer with “no assembly required”. Since it is reasonable to assume that they may not understand how the printer works and what will come out of it, they may wind up returning it because it does not meet their expectations. While consumers are starting to use 3D printers, designers in industry are utilizing Rapid Prototyping (RP) machines to manufacture final products in addition to prototypes. Designers will need to know AM principles in order to communicate design specifications to a RP lab technician so that a part passes Quality Assurance inspection. Training users on fundamental layer-based manufacturing methods can assist before and after a 3D printer purchase and reduce the strain on RP labs in industry. This paper presents an extensible software application that simulates an AM process in a Virtual Reality (VR) environment. The application parses machine component movements and printed segment attributes from G-code files exported from the MakerBot® Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software. Position, speed, and type of movement are used to simulate the physical machine movements. A print “segment” is created at the start and end positions of a print movement. Color-coding segment attributes and modifying their size and shape establishes a visual relationship between terminology for a print setting and its representation in the virtual environment. This visual relationship between printed segments and print settings makes it easier to learn the 3D printing process and associated terminology. Novice and expert users can modify print settings in the virtual environment before and after printing a prototype. Identifying and fixing a mistake in the virtual environment reduces the time and cost to print a part with the desired quality. Training multidisciplinary users in a virtual world allows them to explore AM processes in detail from any angle or scale desired. This application has been tested in a cube shaped virtual reality CAVE system with each side measuring ten feet powered by a 96-node graphics computer cluster. Approximately 20 hours of demonstrations have been performed for public outreach programs related to STEM initiatives and visitors from industry who have had a variety of AM experience.

Abstract Traditional manual designing of bicycles often relies on prototype building and testing and since structural deficiencies often are not obvious until a prototype fails, several build-and-test iterations are usually required before a satisfactory design is obtained. Also, the final design may be less than optimal because of quick fixes inserted at the last minute. However, by utilizing computer-aided design, better bicycles can be designed at smaller investments of time and money. The development and utilization of a DI-3000 based (graphics subroutines developed by Precision Visual), user-friendly, self contained computer aided design package for the analysis and design of bicycle frames and forks are presented. The software, written in Fortran 77 and executable on most passive and active graphics devices, creates the necessary analysis input files for the ANSYS finite element program (developed and marketed by Swanson Analysis System Inc.). These pre and post processing files in conjunction with the ANSYS program are used to determine deflections and stress components. The graphics user interface module of the software allows users to enter bicycle geometry, loading and other pertinent data quickly and efficiently. Tubing configuration and specifications are selected from a data base through the use of cursor-controlled menus. The loading menu presents users with seven different types of realistic and self-consistent loading conditions from which to choose. Computer graphics is also used extensively wherever appropriate to enhance user-computer interaction. Contrasting color and text size are used to explain pictorially as well as visually unfamiliar terminology and to clarify vague sign or orientation conventions, thus, leading to more accurate input. While this package has been designed for instructional purposes, it can also be used by design engineers involved in the design of bicycles to facilitate the creation of ANSYS pre and post processing files.

Introdução: As Reações Infusionais (RI) São aquelas que não podem ser explicadas pelo perfil de toxicidade conhecido do medicamento antineoplásico. Elas podem ainda variar de acordo com o fármaco administrado, duração e frequência da infusão, bem como exposição prévia ao agente. As RI são classificadas em graus de acordo com o “Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events “(CTCAE), onde Grau 1 compreende uma reação leve e transitória sem necessidade de interromper a quimioterapia ou de outras intervenções, e grau 5 que compreende as RI que resultam em óbito. Entre os agentes antineoplásicos mais associados com as RI estão os compostos de platina (Cisplatina, Carboplatina e Oxaliplatina), que costumam causar reações conforme a exposição aumenta e o paciente costuma apresentar eritema, broncoespasmo e hipotensão. Objetivo: Aplicar o Processo de enfermagem para que seja desenvolvido um plano de cuidado individualizado e adequado para o paciente deste relato. Material e métodos: Trata-se de um relato de experiência vivenciada por uma aluna do curso de graduação de enfermagem, durante o estágio curricular supervisionado em uma unidade de infusão oncológica, nos meses de agosto a outubro de 2021. Resultados: Paciente portadora de Cancer de colo de útero, em segundo regime terapêutico, onde o primeiro consistiu em Quimioterapia com Cisplatina e sessões de radioterapia, e o atual de quimioterapia paliativa com protocolo Carbotaxol, uma associação de Carboplatina e Paclitaxel. Durante seu quinto ciclo, logo após o início da infusão da Carboplatina, paciente apresentou sensação de mal estar geral, com hiperemia facial e hipertensão arterial, sendo identificada a ocorrência da Reação Infusional aguda de CTCAE 3. No momento equipe médica optou pela administração de hidrocortisona e houve remissão completa dos sintomas após cerca de 40 minutos. Conclusão: A enfermagem tem uma atuação de grande importância frente a administração de quimioterapia. Com este relato, fica evidente que a equipe de enfermagem em oncologia deve se capacitar e se atualizar com frequência, para que a identificação das Reações Infusionais seja rápida, a prevenção seja eficaz e a conduta seja tomada sempre com base em evidências científicas.

Introdução: O câncer de colo uterino, apesar de apresentar um prognóstico satisfatório quando diagnosticado e tratado precocemente, ainda demonstra altas taxas de mortalidade no mundo. Os procedimentos excisionais são as principais condutas realizadas diante de lesões intraepiteliais de alto grau (LIEAG). Não obstante, a recorrência e recidiva da neoplasia ocorrem em 5 a 35% das mulheres submetidas a esse tratamento. Diante disso, é fulcral avaliar os fatores de risco determinantes da recorrência e recidiva. Objetivo: Analisar os fatores de risco relacionados à persistência de LIEAG após tratamento excisional. Métodos: Foi realizada uma revisão de literatura, com busca no PubMed. Utilizaram-se os descritores associados “HPV”, “HSIL”, “risk factors” AND “persistent” e foram encontrados 77 artigos dos anos de 2009 a 2019. Como critérios de inclusão, adotaram-se publicações na íntegra e nos idiomas inglês e português. Por fim, foram selecionados os estudos que descreviam os fatores para a recorrência da LIEAG e foram utilizados 12 artigos para a revisão. Resultados e conclusão: As lesões cervicais representam uma das manifestações subclínicas da infecção pelo papilomavírus humano (HPV) que apresenta características proliferativas com maturação anormal e achados atípicos de graus variáveis. A terminologia atual de classificação citológica cervical é baseada no sistema de Bethesda, que classifica as neoplasias intraepiteliais cervicais de grau I (NIC I) em lesões intraepiteliais escamosas de baixo grau (LIEBG) e as neoplasias de graus II (NIC II) e III (NIC III) em LIEAG. A LIEAG é caracterizada por núcleos irregulares e hipercromáticos, aumento da relação núcleo-citoplasma e presença de cromatina grosseira. Em relação aos achados colposcópicos anormais, a NIC II é restrita aos dois terços inferiores do epitélio, enquanto a NIC III se encontra em toda a espessura do epitélio. Uma revisão sistemática realizada entre 2000 e 2019 avaliou o valor do teste de HPV alto risco (HPVAR) para screening e seguimento pós-tratamento, e os resultados mostraram que após excisão cirúrgica o teste de HPVAR negativo está associado a risco menor que 2% de recorrência (valor preditivo negativo de 98%) e, se positivo, de 12 a 25% de recidiva. Em um estudo prospectivo observacional realizado com 307 mulheres, entre os riscos analisados, fatores como HIV positivo, margens comprometidas e tabagismo apresentaram risco aumentado, porém apenas em casos de margens comprometidas houve significância estatística. Em um estudo retrospectivo realizado entre 2011 e 2015, 3.582 pacientes foram acompanhadas e os riscos mostraram-se elevados para pacientes maiores de 50 anos, com presença de margens positivas, particularmente endocervicais, além de citologia alterada e teste DNA-HPV positivo. Com isso, mesmo após tratamento, a LIEAG ainda apresenta riscos de recorrência, o que demonstra a importância do acompanhamento subsequente e do diagnóstico precoce.
