Abstract:
AbstractWe follow up on a previous finding that Miras containing the third dredge-up (3DUP) indicator technetium (Tc) in their atmosphere form a different sequence of K – [22] colour as a function of pulsation period than Miras without Tc. A near-to-mid-infrared colour such as K – [22] is a good probe for the dust mass-loss rate (MLR) of these AGB stars. Contrary to what one might naïvely expect, Tc-poor Miras show redderK – [22] colours (i.e. higher dust MLRs) than Tc-rich Miras at a given period. In the follow-up work, the previous sample is extended and the analysis is expanded towards other colours and ISO dust spectra to check if the previous finding is due to a specific dust feature in the 22 μm band. We also investigate if the same two sequences can be revealed in the gas MLR. Different hypotheses to explain the observation of two sequences in the P vs. K – [22] diagram are discussed and tested, but so far none of them convincingly explains the observations.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD (Agric))--University of Stellenbosch, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Downgrading of fruit due to insufficient red colour has limited the profitability of lucrative blushed pear cultivars (Pyrus communis L.). In 'Rosemarie', poor fruit colour has been ascribed to pre-harvest red colour loss during periods of high temperature. The regulation of colour development in pears has not been studied and, in addition, little is known about anthocyanin degradation in attached fruit. Changes in colour were recorded and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and UDPGalactose: flavonoid-3-0-glycosyltransferase (UFGT) activities assessed in response to cold fronts and during fruit development in order to establish the regulation of colour development in red and blushed pear cultivars. Best red colour was generally attained a month or more before harvest whereafter red colour faded towards harvest. Unlike in some other fruits, UFGT activity apparently did not limit colour development whereas fading of red colour towards harvest might relate to decreasing PAL activity. 'Rosemarie' colour fluctuated considerably, increasing with cold fronts and decreasing during intermittent warmer periods, while red colour was more stable in other cultivars. PAL and UFGT activities in 'Rosemarie' increased in response to low temperatures, but were unaffected in 'Bon Rouge'. We concluded that anthocyanin synthesis in 'Rosemarie' requires low temperatures while colour development in 'Bon Rouge' and probably also other cultivars is primarily regulated by endogenous factors. Detached pome fruit were used to study temperature and light effects on anthocyanin degradation and fruit colour and to assess the modifying effect of anthocyanin concentration on colour loss. Anthocyanin degradation and red colour loss increased linearly between 10°C and 30°C. Irradiation further increased the rate of degradation and colour loss. The rate of colour loss depended on anthocyanin concentration, being much faster in fruit with high compared to fruit with low pigment levels. This was ascribed to the exponential relationship between anthocyanin concentration and hue at high pigment levels and the linear relationship at lower pigment levels. Anthocyanin degradation and pre-harvest red colour loss in 'Rosemarie' was quantitatively confirmed and corresponded with a warm period during fruit development. Based on these data, we attributed the susceptibility of 'Rosemarie' to pre-harvest colour loss to low anthocyanin concentrations in its peel that allow the visualisation of net anthocyanin degradation at high temperatures. Overhead evaporative cooling (EG) as measure to improve red colour in blushed pears was evaluated. 'Rosemarie' fruit that received pulsed EG applications from two weeks before harvest at air temperatures exceeding 28°G were redder than control fruit at harvest. EG had no effect on 'Forelle' colour. Though EG could be used to improve 'Rosemarie' fruit colour in warm production areas, its effect was relatively small compared to colour change in response to temperature. Lastly, we assessed the photoprotective function of anthocyanin in pear peel. Photoinhibition was evident in exposed faces of pears under natural conditions. The extent of photoinhibition increased with decreasing redness of peel and was maintained after photoinhibitory treatment. Although anthocyanin was apparently able to afford photoprotection at 40oG, we argued against this as a general function. There were indications that photoprotection was associated, but not necessarily due to light attenuation by anthocyanin.
'Rosemarie' vrugte wat evaporatief verkoel is bo 28°G vanaf twee weke voor oes, was rooier as kontrole vrugte by oes.

Abstract:
This study presents findings on the effect of domestic laundry detergents on the fastness to light of selected fibre reactive dyes applied to cotton. The study was carried out to elucidate the reasons for the accelerated colour loss of cotton garments washed under Australian domestic laundering conditions. Cotton fabric dyed with commonly used reactive dyes were laundered with water only, several domestic detergents and a laboratory formulated neutral detergent, and then exposed to light for two hours in the wet state. Quantities of detergent used were in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations. Exposures were repeated fifteen times equivalent to 30 hours exposure. Colour loss and colour difference were measured after 5, 10 and 15 wash cycles and 10, 20 and 30 hours exposure. When the fabric was exposed wet the colour faded more rapidly than when exposed dry to light. Detergents increased the colour loss even when the fabric was not exposed to light. The presence of an oxidizing bleach (sodium perborate) in the detergent increased colour loss during washing and wet exposure to light. Ultraviolet radiation from the light source, heat, moisture, alkali and oxidising bleach during exposure resulted in hydrolysis of the dye-fibre bond causing dye desorption during washing and rinsing. Water alone increased the fading of the dyes most likely due to presence of dissolved oxygen held within the fibre. The combination of ultraviolet radiation and oxidizing bleaches altered the chemistry of the dye and hence its shade. This was particularly evident on the black dye and one of the navy blue dyes.

Abstract:
Introduction. At low temperature the preservation of foodstuffs is one of the best ways of their storage and therefore this method is widely used in meat industry. The low temperature suppresses the activity of microorganisms and tissue ferments. Therefore the meat preserved by freezing keeps for a long time its initial properties and there are only minimal changes of food value and taste. At low temperature the activity of ferments slows down but does not stop. Work object. The work object is the determination of the change of physical-chemical properties of meat during freezing and keeping in - 180 C and - 860 C temperature. Work methodics. The research as fulfilled at the laboratory of the evaluation of the cattle meat properties and the meat quality. For the rersearch taken 14 Lithuanian white pig meat samples the mean weight of which was 500 g. were taken. They were put into special freezing bags and were frozen at temperature -180 C, and -860 C. Before freezing it the physical-chemical properties of the meat were determined. Two examples from each meat samples were researched. The determination of the physical-chemical properties of the meat was fulfilled every month. Also were was taken 6 Lithuanian white pig meat samples the mean weight of which was 500 g. Before freezing it the physical-chemical properties of the meat were determined. Abstract:
Significant improvements that are based on quantization can be made in the area of lossy image compression. In this thesis, we propose two effective quantization based algorithms for compressing two-dimensional RGB images. The first method is based on a new codebook generation algorithm which, unlike existing VQ methods. It forms the codewords directly in one step, using the less common local information in every image in the training set. Existing methods form an initial codebook and update it iteratively, by taking the average of vectors representing small image regions. Another distinguishing aspect of this method is the use of non-overlapping hexagonal blocks instead of the traditional rectangular blocks, to partition the images. We demonstrate how the codewords are extracted from such blocks. We also measure the separate contribution of each of the two distinguishing aspects of the proposed codebook generation algorithm. The second proposed method, unlike all known VQ algorithms, does not use training images or a codebook. It is implemented to further improve the image quality resulting from the proposed codebook generation algorithm. In this algorithm, the representative pixels (i.e. those that represent pixels that are perceptually similar) are extracted from sets of perceptually similar color pixels. Also, the image pixels are reconstructed using the closest representative pixels. There are two main differences between this algorithm and the existing lossy compression algorithms including our proposed codebook generation algorithm. The first is that this algorithm exploits the image pixel correlation according to the viewer’s perception and not according to how close it is numerically to its neighboring pixels. The second difference is that this algorithm does not reconstruct an entire image block simultaneously using a codeword. Each pixel is reconstructed such that it has the value of its closest representative pixel.

Abstract:
Tooth loss is the accumulation of oral health hazards such as lack of access to dental care, inappropriate health behavioral, low socioeconomic status. Studies have also shown more tooth loss among racial/ethnic minorities. Racial discrimination has been associated with racial/ethnic disparities in health, affecting the individual and population health. The study aims to evaluate the association between race-ethnicity and tooth loss and the role of socioeconomic status, health behaviors, health services access and self-reported discrimination. Baseline cross-sectional data were obtained from the Pro-Saúde Cohort Study (Rio de Janeiro-Brazil) in 4030 civil servants, and analyzed with ordered logistic regression. The outcome was self-reported tooth loss measured in four ordered categories. In the full model, adjusted for behavioral, socioeconomic, dental care and demographic variables, the OR was, respectively 1.31 (IC 95%: 1.10–1.55) and 1.46 (IC 95%: 1.21–1.77) for browns and blacks. There was no significant association between tooth loss and self-reported discrimination.

Abstract:

Sandhu, Sumit. "Characterization of loss of HLTF function in the development of colon cancer." Molecular Cancer, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/8587.

Full text
Abstract:
Helicase-like Transcription Factor (HLTF) is a DNA helicase protein which is homologous to SNF/SWI family. It has been demonstrated to be a functional homolog of yeast Rad5, required for the maintenance of genomic stability. Although the physiologic role of HLTF is largely unknown, inactivation of HLTF by promoter hypermethylation has been found in more than 40% human colon cancers. In this study, we have applied mouse transgenic approaches to determine whether loss of HLTF function could be important for colorectal carcinogenesis. HLTF knockout mice were generated by the deletion of first 5 exons of the HLTF gene. The complete loss of HLTF expression in HLTF -/- mice was confirmed by northern blot and real time RT-PCR assays. HLTF -/- mice did not show any developmental defects within a 2-year observation indicating that HLTF is dispensable for mouse development. Furthermore, HLTF -/- mice were free of intestinal or colorectal tumors or other types of tumors, suggesting that loss of HLTF function alone is not sufficient to drive oncogenic transformation in intestinal track and other tissues. To determine whether loss of HLTF function could cooperate with other tumor suppressors in the formation of colorectal cancers, we have bred HLTF knockout mice with the mutant mice for APC (adenomtous polyposis coli) and P53. In HLTF -/-APC Min/+ mice, a significantly increased formation of intestinal adenocarcinoma and colorectal cancers were observed. Although very few HLTF -/-P53 -/- mice developed colorectal cancers, these mice had increased incidence of the formation of metastatic lymphomas. Cytogenetic analysis of colorectal cancer cells derived from HLTF -/-APC Min/+ mice demonstrated a high incidence of gross chromosomal instabilities, including Robertsonian fusions, fragments and aneuploidy. All these genetic alterations were not observed in the intestinal tumor cells from APC Min/+, implicating that loss of HLTF function could induce genomic instability which contributes to intestinal carcinogenesis. To further investigate the role of HLTF in colorectal carcinogenesis, we have also applied a shRNA knockdown approach to down-regulate HLTF expression in human HCT-116 colon cancer cells. HCT-116 cells highly express HLTF and show less chromosomal instability, making these cells as a very useful model to investigate the loss of function of HLTF in human colorectal carcinogenesis. Using Western blot approach, we confirmed that HLTF knockdown HCT-116 cells had less than 5% of HLTF expression as compared to the scramble controls. By inoculating HLTF knockdown HCT-116 cells to Rag1 -/-IL2 -/- immunocompromised mice, we further demonstrated that HLTF knockdown promote tumor growth and invasion. Moreover, spectral karyotyping analysis revealed that HLTF knockdown human colon cancer cells had significantly increased chromosomal instability, including both aneuploidy and chromosomal translocation. Taken together, our work strongly indicates that loss of HLTF function can promote the malignant transformation of intestinal or colonic adenomas to carcinomas by inducing genomic instability. Given the high frequency of epigenetic inactivation by hypermethylation of HLTF in human colon cancers, our studies strongly suggest that this epigenetic alteration could be directly involved in the development of colorectal cancer rather than a consequence of this carcinogenesis.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper presents experimental measurements of the performance of a new film cooling hole geometry - the Converging Slot-Hole or Console. This novel, patented geometry has been designed to improve the heat transfer and aerodynamic loss performance of turbine vane and rotor blade cooling systems. The physical principles embodied in the new hole design are described, and a typical example of the console geometry is presented. The cooling performance of a single row of consoles was compared experimentally with that of typical 35° cylindrical and fan-shaped holes and a slot, on a large-scale, flat-plate model at engine representative Reynolds numbers in a low speed tunnel with ambient temperature main flow. The hole throat area per unit width is matched for all four hole geometries. By independently varying the temperature of the heated coolant and the heat flux from an electrically heated, thermally insulated, constant heat flux surface, both the heat transfer coefficient and the adiabatic cooling effectiveness were deduced from digital photographs of the colour play of narrow-band thermochromic liquid crystals on the model surface. A comparative measurement of the aerodynamic losses associated with each of the four film-cooling geometries was made by traversing the boundary layer at the downstream end of the flat plate. The promising heat transfer and aerodynamic performance of the console geometry have justified further experiments on an engine representative nozzle guide vane in a transonic annular cascade presented in Part 2 of this paper [1].

Abstract:
Color combination criteria in Le Corbusier's Purist architecture based on Salubra claviers from 1931. DOI: 10.1002/col.21940. Abstract: We have carried out a new study of the color combinations selected by Le Corbusier in the ‘claviers’ for the Salubra wallpaper company in 1931, by analyzing them in the Natural Color System NCS, which allows us to understand the perceptive variables of colors (hue, blackness and chromaticness) as well as their combination criteria. In this paper, the selected hue ranges are discussed, and those absent ones. We aim to find out the underlying order in the color combinations by studying the similarities and contrasts of their hues in NCS. We demonstrate graphically some principles in Le Corbusier’s color preferences, such as the usual resource of contrasting cool with warm colors, something slightly different to the traditional contrast of complementary colors. Abstract:
The lines in topographic maps are difficult to be separated from each other because of their confusing colors. To solve this problem, we propose a novel line separation method using their regional color and spatial information. Firstly, we divide the lines into lots of circular regions with a certain diameter, and consider these regions as the basic processing units. Then based on a new concept of regional color confusion, we classify all the divided circular regions into two kinds of regions by whether the color is pure or mixed. Further, for pure color regions, a fuzzy clustering algorithm with Gaussian kernel can be used to cluster them into different lines based on their color information. Meanwhile, we determine the memberships of the mixed color regions according to their spatial relations with the clustered pure color regions. The concept of regional color confusion is proposed to reduce the influences of the confusing colors to line separation, and the spatial relations are utilized to solve the problems of the membership determination of the mixed color regions. The experimental results demonstrate that our method can achieve higher accuracy compare with other two state-of-the-art methods, which provides a novel idea for line element segmentation from scanned topographic maps.

Abstract:
The 6 accessions showed a great agronomic potential due of fruits size, shape and colour attractive inside Valencian tomato fruits model.

Abstract:
Tribological characteristics of A356 Al alloy-10 vol. % SiCP composite discs/brake pad has been studied under dry sliding conditions at sliding speeds in the range 2 to 5 m/s and at loads in the range 1–3 MPa. In these tests, disc of Al MMCs and pin of friction pad made of polymer based composite were used. Wear rates of Al MMC disc as calculated by weight loss method, found to be negative at high sliding speed and high load. Worn surface of disc has been analyzed using EDAX. SEM analyses of worn surfaces of composite disc infer transfer of material from pin to the disc resulting in the formation of tribolayers. Two types of tribolayers were observed on the worn surface, one having shiny appearance of copper rich layer and other is dark in colour consisting of Mg, S, Fe, Ba, Ca, Si, Cu, In and Al. In the later layers were rich in copper and appear as bright patchy layers under SEM. Coverage of copper rich layers increase all along and across the worn track at a sliding speed of 4 and 5 m/s in the load range 2 to 3 MPa. Atomic percent of copper increase with load and consequently affect the wear rate of disc. EDAX analysis of dark tribo layers on wear track of composite disc show continuous increase in the amount of Cu and Ba with increase in speed and load. Hence, wear rate of composite discs were relatively low under all test conditions. These results clearly indicate composition of friction material having profound influence on the wear rate of Al MMC discs.

Full text
Abstract:
In the decade after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, African Americans made historic gains in accessing employment opportunities in racially integrated workplaces in U.S. business firms and government agencies. In the previous working papers in this series, we have shown that in the 1960s and 1970s, Blacks without college degrees were gaining access to the American middle class by moving into well-paid unionized jobs in capital-intensive mass production industries. At that time, major U.S. companies paid these blue-collar workers middle-class wages, offered stable employment, and provided employees with health and retirement benefits. Of particular importance to Blacks was the opening up to them of unionized semiskilled operative and skilled craft jobs, for which in a number of industries, and particularly those in the automobile and electronic manufacturing sectors, there was strong demand. In addition, by the end of the 1970s, buoyed by affirmative action and the growth of public-service employment, Blacks were experiencing upward mobility through employment in government agencies at local, state, and federal levels as well as in civil-society organizations, largely funded by government, to operate social and community development programs aimed at urban areas where Blacks lived. By the end of the 1970s, there was an emergent blue-collar Black middle class in the United States. Most of these workers had no more than high-school educations but had sufficient earnings and benefits to provide their families with economic security, including realistic expectations that their children would have the opportunity to move up the economic ladder to join the ranks of the college-educated white-collar middle class. That is what had happened for whites in the post-World War II decades, and given the momentum provided by the dominant position of the United States in global manufacturing and the nation’s equal employment opportunity legislation, there was every reason to believe that Blacks would experience intergenerational upward mobility along a similar education-and-employment career path. That did not happen. Overall, the 1980s and 1990s were decades of economic growth in the United States. For the emerging blue-collar Black middle class, however, the experience was of job loss, economic insecurity, and downward mobility. As the twentieth century ended and the twenty-first century began, moreover, it became apparent that this downward spiral was not confined to Blacks. Whites with only high-school educations also saw their blue-collar employment opportunities disappear, accompanied by lower wages, fewer benefits, and less security for those who continued to find employment in these jobs. The distress experienced by white Americans with the decline of the blue-collar middle class follows the downward trajectory that has adversely affected the socioeconomic positions of the much more vulnerable blue-collar Black middle class from the early 1980s. In this paper, we document when, how, and why the unmaking of the blue-collar Black middle class occurred and intergenerational upward mobility of Blacks to the college-educated middle class was stifled. We focus on blue-collar layoffs and manufacturing-plant closings in an important sector for Black employment, the automobile industry from the early 1980s. We then document the adverse impact on Blacks that has occurred in government-sector employment in a financialized economy in which the dominant ideology is that concentration of income among the richest households promotes productive investment, with government spending only impeding that objective. Reduction of taxes primarily on the wealthy and the corporate sector, the ascendancy of political and economic beliefs that celebrate the efficiency and dynamism of “free market” business enterprise, and the denigration of the idea that government can solve social problems all combined to shrink government budgets, diminish regulatory enforcement, and scuttle initiatives that previously provided greater opportunity for African Americans in the government and civil-society sectors.

Full text
