Abstract:
This introductory chapter discusses string chamber music, which fostered a variety of social interactions that helped build communities within communities in the nineteenth century. Chamber music for strings resists easy incorporation into the dominant narrative of musical developments centered on technological progress and compositional innovation. This is because chamber music's association with musical conservativism and orthodoxy has colored its reception since at least the 1840s. One reason for string music's apparent orthodoxy lies in the fact that stringed instruments themselves experienced only subtle organological changes in the nineteenth century in comparison to the piano or to wind instruments, which radically changed the timbre of the orchestra in symphonic and operatic works. Moreover, observations that string chamber music remained essentially conservative in its treatment of genre, form, harmony, and the like betray modern historiography's obsession with innovation.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Jane Bolin's career in the legal profession and the lived experiences that produced her as the nation's first African American woman judge. A member of a small unit of black women lawyers, Bolin's early practice mirrored that of other black women lawyers who gained entrance, but not full integration, into the legal profession. Jane's strides in the legal profession from 1931 to 1939 were made relatively quickly, suggesting a tale of easy access and an unobstructed path. However, an examination of her professional life beyond the pioneering peaks reveals the pervasive discrimination that Bolin overcame, and unravels the threads of gender, class, race, credentialism, and politics that colored the fabric of her professional life.

Brennan, T. Corey. Hadrian’s Personality. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190250997.003.0004.

Abstract:
Hadrian’s life was a string of controversial episodes, on which even our summary sources had to acknowledge variant traditions: Plotina’s alleged role in Hadrian’s adoption by Trajan, his execution of four consulars in 118, his relationship with Antinoös and the youth’s death in October 130. Add to that the nature of Hadrian’s marriage, his adoption of Lucius Aelius in 136 and Antoninus Pius in 138, the emperor’s death in July 138, and the ensuing fierce debate over his memory (including deification). Our literary sources, it is argued, use these incidents to illustrate a conventional notion of Hadrian’s complex, shifting personality, which was unable to control extremes of emotions. The late-second-century senatorial biographer Marius Maximus apparently was an influential source for later writers on this emperor’s life. The biographer’s picture of a self-contradictory Hadrian colored Maximus’ portrayal of Sabina, whom he presented so as to magnify the emperor’s shortcomings and failings.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the rent strikes staged by Illinois Negroes with the help of Unemployed Councils in the early years of the Great Depression to resist evictions from the Chicago South Side. Chicago suffered during the depression which began in 1929, and the ill effects of the crisis were graphically reflected in the housing situation. Finding rents hard to collect, many owners agreed to condemnation and demolition of rundown houses as the cheapest way out. This chapter examines the alliance between militant Negroes and neighborhood Unemployed Councils in 1930 to fight Negro evictions from the South Side, culminating in riots on August 3, 1931. It also considers a few bright spots with regards to the Negro housing picture in Illinois, citing the high rate of home ownership among Negroes in Chicago; the provisions made in the State Housing Act in 1933 for the creation of the Illinois State Housing Board; and the completion of the Ida B. Wells Homes, a project built expressly for the colored citizens of Chicago, in 1941.
