Abstract:
Structural colors have been reported instead of conventional dye- or pigment-based color filters. Color selectivity can degrade as structure-based optical resonances are accompanied by several resonance modes. In this work, we suggest a simple and effective design of the plasmonic color filter (PCF) that integrated the PCF with the one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PhC). The introduced PhC creates an optical band gap and suppresses undesired peaks of the PCF caused by the high-order resonance mode. Finally, the suggested structure provides a high color purity. This study can be a guideline for technology that replaces conventional color filters.

Abstract:
AbstractStructural colors emerge when a particular wavelength range is filtered out from a broadband light source. It is regarded as a valuable platform for color display and digital imaging due to the benefits of environmental friendliness, higher visibility, and durability. However, current devices capable of generating colors are all based on direct transmission or reflection. Material loss, thick configuration, and the lack of tunability hinder their transition to practical applications. In this paper, a novel mechanism that generates high-purity colors by photon spin restoration on ultrashallow plasmonic grating is proposed. We fabricated the sample by interference lithography and experimentally observed full color display, tunable color logo imaging, and chromatic sensing. The unique combination of high efficiency, high-purity colors, tunable chromatic display, ultrathin structure, and friendliness for fabrication makes this design an easy way to bridge the gap between theoretical investigations and daily-life applications.

Abstract:
The goal of this study is to develop quantitative metrics for evaluating color tracking and gray tracking in a color medical display. Color tracking is the chromaticity consistency of the red, green, or blue shades. Gray tracking is the chromaticity consistency of the gray shades. Color tracking and gray tracking are the most important colorimetric responses of a color medical display because they directly indicate the color calibration quality and can therefore be used to compare color performance between displays. Two metrics, primary purity and gray purity, are defined to measure the color shift of the primary shades and gray shades of a color display, respectively. The area under the curves of primary purity and gray purity can then represent the quality of color tracking (C_AUC) and gray tracking (G_AUC), respectively. Fifteen displays including medical, professional-grade, consumer-grade, mobile, and special displays were tested to compare their C_AUC and G_AUC. The OLED displays have the greatest C_AUC values. The medical and professional-grade displays have the greatest combinations of C_AUC and G_AUC values. Most consumer-grade displays have lower C_AUC and G_AUC values, but some show better gray tracking than color tracking. The special displays exhibit particularly poor color and gray tracking. Using C_AUC and G_AUC together can quantitatively predict and compare color performance of different displays.

We propose a design of angle-insensitive and polarization-independent reflective color filters with high efficiency (>80%) based on broad resonance in a Fabry–Pérot cavity where asymmetric metal-dielectric-metal planar structures are employed. Broadband absorption properties allow the resonance in the visible range to remain nearly constant over a broad range of incident angles of up to 40° for both s- and p-polarizations. Effects of the angles of incidence and polarization state of incident light on the purity of the resulting colors are examined on the CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram. In addition, higher-order resonances of the proposed color filters and their electric field distributions are investigated for improved color purity. Lastly, the spectral properties of the proposed structures with different metallic layers are studied. The simple strategy described in this work could be adopted in a variety of research areas, such as color decoration devices, microscopy, and colorimetric sensors.

Unlike color dyes, structural colors only slightly fade during long-term usage. Here, structural colors were controllably achieved by constructing CoFeB photonic crystal layers on the surface of a nanoporous aluminum oxide (AAO) substrate by magnetron sputtering deposition. The resulting material showed a wide visible spectral response and achieved structural color control with a high resolution, high color purity, and saturation. The angle-dependent color changes of CoFeB@AAO films were further investigated by changing the incident light angle. The simulation results of the model are consistent with the experiments, which is significant in practical applications. This strategy may have great potential applications for solid structure color coatings, anti-counterfeiting and security, information storage, and electromagnetic sensors.

Finally we get that the temperature is the main factor to affect the color performance of white LED photoelectric, with the white LED apparent temperature rise, forward voltage, the color coordinates and color purity tends to go down. On the contrary with increasing junction temperature, the half-value wavelength and color temperature are increased accordingly.

We demonstrate the multiband color filtering of a standard RGB color and a complementary CMY color by a plasmonic color filter, composed of concentric corrugated metallic thin film rings. The surface plasmon resonance is excited by the periodic corrugation, and the coupled light is transmitted through the central subwavelength aperture. Color selectivity is achieved not only in the visible but also in the near-infrared (NIR) region. Therefore, simultaneous imaging with visible and NIR can be realized by the integration of plasmonic color filters with sensors. We investigate the angle of incidence dependence of the transmission color selectivity and the color purity of the fabricated plasmonic color filter array.

This study contrasts the concept of color metaphor in English and Indonesian song lyrics. In the concept of color metaphor, meaning must be interpreted based on certain similarities between primary and secondary meanings. This isdescriptive qualitative research. The method used in this research is simak method. Padan method is used to analyze the data.The results show that the concept of color metaphor in English and Indonesian song lyrics have some similarities and differences. However, the different concepts of color metaphor are found in blue, red, and green colors.

In this study, the optimal structure for obtaining high green color purity was investigated by modeling quantum dot (QD)–organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). It was found that even if the green quantum dot (G-QD) density in the G-QD layer was 30%, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) in the green wavelength band could be minimized to achieve a sharp emission spectrum, but it was difficult to completely block the blue light leakage with the G-QD layer alone. This blue light leakage problem was solved by stacking a green color filter (G-CF) layer on top of the G-QD layer. When G-CF thickness 5 μm was stacked, blue light leakage was blocked completely, and the FWHM of the emission spectrum in the green wavelength band was minimized, resulting in high green color purity. It is expected that the overall color gamut of QD-OLED can be improved by optimizing the device that shows such excellent green color purity.

Fifty-one yellowish-green color 5mm×7mm oval faceted peridots are experimented by Color i5 to test their color parameters, and concept of metamerism is introduced into this article, to analyze the effects of color parameters on the color appearance of peridots. SPSS analysis indicates: wavelength λ has no correlation with metamerism index MI, but excitation purity Pe has significant correlation with MI (rPe×MI=0.826, 0.01), means with the increase of excitation purity, the color appearance of peridot tend to be more unsteady and change more with the illumination conversion. Simultaneously, metamerism index MI increase with increasing chromaticity C* and lightness L* (rC*×MI=0.979, rL*×MI=0.889, 0.01), means the change of color appearance increase with illumination conversion. In conclusion, when the yellowish-green of peridot is more saturate and brighter, the effect of illumination on color appearance is greater.

Embedded in culture historical research on color, the present study contributes to the hypothesis that a given color only obtains its cultural or symbolical meanings in association with another color. By analyzing Hungarian examples of the color yellow, I will demonstrate that a color may have associations of a different character in relation to another color: this association may rely on symbolism alone, as seen in the relationship between yellow and black in connection with the concept of impurity tied to bile, excrement and dirty soil. Connections between colors may also be based on sensory-psychological/cognitive similarities, such as those drawn between yellow and green in earlier times across Europe, an association that can be traced in some archaic elements of Hungarian culture, such as in the ideas connected to jaundice. In addition to this argument, I also propose that, out of excreta, compared to feces light yellow urine is closer to the category of white associated with purity (through the analogy of white wine) than to yellow which (also) symbolizes impurity.

When infants are tested with stimuli of various chromaticities embedded in a dark or achromatic (white) surround, they show maximal preference for stimuli of maximal colorimetric purity, and minimal preference for achromatic stimuli. We investigated how this pattern of preferences changes with changes of surround chromaticity. Sixteen-week-old infants were tested in two experimental conditions. The surrounds in the first condition were red and white; and in the second condition green and white. The three test stimuli varied in colorimetric purity from white to red in the first condition, and from white to green in the second condition. A test stimulus that appeared achromatic to adults when viewed in the chromatic surround was included. Infant spontaneous looking preferences changed with changes of surround chromaticity. The changes were consistent with the conclusion that infant looking behavior is governed by a preference for the stimuli that differ maximally in purity from the surround. The implications of this pattern of results are discussed.

Abstract:
<p class="abstrakinggris">The common method used for purity testing of rice seed is human visual observation. This method, however, has a high degree of subjectivity when dealing with different rice varieties which have similar morphology. Digital image analysis with flatbed scanning for purity testing of rice seed was proposed by investigating the morphology of rice seeds and confirmation by grow out test (GOT) in the field. Two extra-long seed varieties were used in this study including a red rice Aek Sibundong and an aromatic rice Sintanur. The identification on 14 parameters of morphological characteristics indicated that only six parameters were correlated, i.e. area, feret, minimum feret, aspect ratio, round, and solidity. The purity of rice seed can be effectively determined using digital image analysis of spikelet color and shape. Based on the discriminant analysis of the digital image the recognition rate of rice seed purity was higher than 99.2% for shape and 93.55% for color. The method, therefore, has a potential to be used as a complement in rice seed purity testing to increase the accuracy of human visual method and it is more sensitive than GOT.</p>

The speed of color naming in a Stroop task was faster when words in black concerned immorality (e.g., greed), rather than morality, and when words in white concerned morality (e.g., honesty), rather than immorality. In addition, priming immorality by having participants hand-copy an unethical statement speeded identification of words in the black font. Making immorality salient in this way also increased the moral Stroop effect among participants who had not previously shown it. In the final study, participants also rated consumer products. Moral meanings interfered with color naming most strongly among those participants who rated personal cleaning products as especially desirable. The moderation of the moral Stroop effect by individual differences in concerns about personal cleanliness suggests that ideas about purity and pollution are central to seeing morality in black and white.

Yellow emitting Sm 3+-doped NaBa 1-x BO 3(0.01 ≤ x ≤ 0.13) phosphors were synthesized by conventional solid state reaction method. The phase structure and luminescence properties of the as-prepared phosphors were investigated. These phosphors can be effectively excited by 403 nm near-ultraviolet light and feature a satisfactory yellow performance. The emission peaks are observed at 560 nm, 603 nm and 650 nm, originating from the transitions of 4G5∕2→6H5∕2, 4G5∕2→6H7∕2 and 4G5∕2→6H9∕2 respectively. Investigation of Sm 3+ concentration-dependent emission spectra indicates that the NaBa 0.95 BO 3:0.05 Sm 3+ phosphor shows the strongest yellow emission intensity and exhibits the CIE value of x = 0.4760 and y = 0.5090. Through the theoretical calculation, a high color purity of 96.0% was determined for the NaBaBO 3: Sm 3+ phosphor, and the color purity of NaBaBO 3: Sm 3+ is much higher than that of the commercial yellow phosphor YAG : Ce 3+. This work is highly relevant to the development of a new type of potential down-conversion (DC) yellow phosphor for near ultraviolet white or yellow light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

Living organisms have developed a wide range of appearances from iridescent to matte textures. Interestingly, angular-independent structural colors, where isotropy in the scattering structure is present, only produce coloration in the blue wavelength region of the visible spectrum. One might, therefore, wonder if such observation is a limitation of the architecture of the palette of materials available in nature. Here, by exploiting numerical modeling, we discuss the origin of isotropic structural colors without restriction to a specific light scattering regime. We show that high color purity and color saturation cannot be reached in isotropic short-range order structures for red hues. This conclusion holds even in the case of advanced scatterer morphologies, such as core-shell particles or inverse photonic glasses—explaining recent experimental findings reporting very poor performances of visual appearance for such systems.
