Abstract:

Abstract:
Summary Calculated Conflict? The Cologne Election Dispute of 1688 and the Origins of the Nine Years’ War Historians have recently begun to focus on the relationship between elections and conflict during the Early Modern period. Against the backdrop of these debates, the article takes another look at one of the most conflict-laden elections of that era, the election dispute (“Doppelwahl”) of Cologne in July 1688 involving Cardinal Fürstenberg and Duke Joseph Clemens of Bavaria. The spectacular failure of Fürstenberg, the candidate backed by King Louis XIV of France, in the succession struggle in Electoral Cologne was one of the major causes of the Nine Years’ War (known in German as the “War of the Palatine Succession”), which impacted wide swathes of Western and Central Europe. The resolution of the succession dispute in the Archdiocese of Cologne occurred within the context of growing tensions between Louis XIV and his rivals, in particular Emperor Leopold I. Yet up to the summer of 1688, there continued to be opportunities – albeit diminishing ones – to resolve the conflict peacefully. It was only when Emperor Leopold decided to publicly and solemnly declare Fürstenberg ineligible, explicitly citing the cardinal’s allegiance to Louis XIV, that open conflict became unavoidable. As a result, the very reputations of the protagonists were at stake in the Cologne succession, including that of Louis XIV; there was no longer any way to withdraw from the conflict without losing face. There are convincing reasons to believe that the emperor, by deciding to exclude Fürstenberg, was consciously accepting a conflict with France, with the prospect of a broad anti-French alliance that was already forming in Central and Western Europe.

Queste pratiche monetarie erano simili a quelle dell'Ancien Régime in Europa.

Abstract:
Published in 1873, Mark Twain's and Charles Dudley Warner's The Gilded Age went on stage two years later. By the book and the play, Colonel Mulberry Sellers became, at least to some, a dramatic illustration of what was afoot in that era. In March, 1875, the Chicago Times carried an entertainment notice for the opening of that play in that city. This account told that the author of the book and the playwright had envisioned Lawrence Barrett for a role in the play; but it dawned on them that someone with more of a comedic inclination would do better. Perhaps an intimation of that change of tone can be seen in a change of name. The colonel of the novel had a biblical first name, Beriah (Genesis 46–17). That colonel now became Mulberry Sellers, and a humorous actor, John T. Raymond, entered the scene for which Lawrence Barrett had been considered. As this Chicago Times writer put it, the play, with Raymond, had created a “sensation” in New York City, in a run of 120 days. Now Chicago would share the excitement.

Abstract:
In the Lambidaro sub-watershed, precisely on Jalan Colonel Sulaiman Amin, the problem of flooding continues, especially when it rains. The occurrence of flooding around the canal along the Colonel Sulaiman Amin road drainage is caused by several factors, one of which is the capacity of the reservoir which is not able to control the flood discharge optimally so that water cannot overflow into the canal. and eventually caused flooding in the surrounding area. This study aims to determine whether the drainage capacity is still able to drain surface runoff water or not and determine alternative flood control solutions for Colonel Sulaiman Amin Street. The method used is the EPA Model SWMM (Environmental Protection Agency Storm Water Management Model). From this study, the simulation results obtained from EPA SWMM showed alternative solutions offered such as the use of flood pumps, retention ponds, and optimization of drainage, the most effective solution of the six flood mitigation experiments was channel optimization in the form of changing the shape and size of the channel 7 to a square channel with a width of 1 .5 meters. This alternative is 5.26% more effective with an effective percentage of 85.538% and can drain 36.36% more water flow than drainage with a widening of 1.1 meters.

AbstractWork up of adrenal masses includes assessment of endocrine activity and malignancy risk. There is no indication for surgical removal of nonfunctional adrenal adenomas, according to the guidelines. In the present study, we aimed at evaluating the impact of a university endocrine tumor board on the quality of the indications for adrenal surgery at our institution. One hundred consecutive patients receiving primary adrenal surgery at the University Hospital of Cologne, Germany were included. Their demographics, clinic-pathologic characteristics, treatment and outcome were analyzed. In 55 (55%) cases, indication for surgery consisted in functional benign tumors, including Conn, Cushing adenomas and pheochromocytomas. Forty (40%) tumors were referred to surgery for malignancy suspicion and 5 (5%) myelolipomas were removed due to their size. Eighty-nine percent of surgeries were performed as minimally invasive procedures. Overall morbidity included two (2%) self-limiting pancreatic fistulas after left laparoscopic adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma. All functional tumors were confirmed benign by final histology. Only 33 (82.5%) of 40 suspicious cases turned out to be malignant. Consequently, nonfunctional benign adenomas were “unnecessarily” removed in only 7 (7%) patients, with 6 (85.7%) of them having a history of extra-adrenal cancer and all of them fulfilling criteria for surgery, according to the international guidelines. In conclusion, the endocrine tumor board provided an excellent adherence to the guidelines with most surgeries being performed either for functional or malignant tumors. In nonfunctional tumors with history of extra adrenal cancer, CT guided biopsy might be considered for obviating surgery.

From the earliest experiments with the manipulation of 78-rpm disks during the 1920s, the technology of recording has played a major role in the evolution of electroacoustic music. This has extended not only to the recording and reproduction of materials but also to key components of the compositional process itself. Although such influences have become less prominent with the advent of digital technology, their impact during the formative years of electroacoustic music was significant and far-reaching. This article examines some key aspects of the pioneering era of creative development through the early 1950s, with particular reference to the Bauhaus sound artists, Pierre Schaeffer and musique concrète, and the Cologne studio for elektronische Musik

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives Internationally, healthcare systems are confronted by an ever-increasing scarcity of medical resources due to the ongoing novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of remdesivir on the demand of hospital bed capacities for hospitalized COVID-19 patients and to evaluate the potentially created capacities for treating additional COVID-19 patients or elective treatments at the hospital. Methods An epidemiological model was developed that utilized the population of Cologne (Germany) during the first COVID-19 wave (first hospitalized patient—30 September 2020) to compare two scenarios: no administration of remdesivir (A) and the administration of remdesivir according to the EMA label (B). The results of the Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trial were used to evaluate the potential impact of remdesivir on hospital capacity. Results With the first recorded patient on 2 March 2020, a total of 576 COVID-19 hospitalized patients were detected during the first wave in Cologne. Comparing both scenarios (A versus B) of the model, the administration of remdesivir increased the number of discharges from 259 to 293 (+5.8%) and fewer patients needed ICU admission [214 versus 178 (−6.3%)]. In addition, the model estimated 20 fewer deaths (scenario B). Based on a reduced length of stay, 31.4 hospital beds (57.0 versus 25.6) could have been freed by administering remdesivir to eligible patients. This would have allowed either the treatment of an additional 730 COVID-19 patients or 660 elective treatments. Conclusions In our model, remdesivir administration profoundly contributed to free hospital capacities in the metropolitan city Cologne in Germany.

Abstract:
This interview sheds light both on a composer and on a hitherto overlooked field, the evolution of electroacoustic music in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR, commonly called East Germany). This latter focus is vital insofar as little of it, if anything at all, is included in established histories of electroacoustic music. These typically take Cologne, Paris, or New York, together with the associated institutions and composers, as starting points, with nary a word for the GDR or elsewhere. The composer Georg Katzer was a key personality in this era. In this conversation he discusses the genesis of electroacoustic music in the GDR, the influences of studios from other countries, the development of the electronic musical instrument known as the Subharchord, establishing a studio (under conditions which, despite adversity, also gave rise to results of a distinctive charm), formal affiliations with international organizations, and much more.

Abstract:
The Cologne-Düren research group has developed a multichannel extracochlear method of implantation and has carried out 129 operations as of June 1985. To simulate the basic physiologic principles of the inner ear, we also used the place and periodicity principle. Experience so far has shown that the electrical stimulus pattern is perceived as an auditory sensation by the bony wall of the middle ear, and that even a certain selectivity can be achieved. All 129 patients have attained acoustic contact with the environment. They can largely differentiate environmental noises and distinguish human voices from each other. Their lipreading is substantially improved with the support of the speech processor. Moreover, pronunciation becomes very much more distinct in the congenitally deaf. Apart from these average results, signs of development of open speech were observed in 11% of the patients.

Abstract:
Military material culture (tangible expression of military history) does not belong to topics unfairly forgotten by researchers. However, in modern practice, the lost cultural heritage is not researched as actively as the preserved one. This study aims to fill in some lacunae in the history of military material culture related to the practice of re-melting precious metal objects. The issue is considered on the example of Life-Cuirassier Her Majesty’s Regiment. The article highlights the key moments of the regiment’s history related to royal awards. It was, primarily, the short epoch of the reign of Paul I when silver timpani, trumpets and cuirasses received the status of regimental relics (1799). During the reign of his successor Alexander I, with a reduction in the cost of maintaining the army, the silver part of this regimental relics was re-melted. The money received made up the fund of the officer’s insurance capital. Some more of the regimental relics, precious in every sense, were lost in the years of the Great Patriotic War. As a result, the military material culture of the era of Paul I, in particular the protective armament, is presented very poorly in modern museum collections. This research helps to describe its character and history of existence. The main sources of studying the lost relics is the history of the regiment and its regimental archive published by Colonel M.I. Markov. Graphic documents are used as additional sources. The article outlines the list of modern museum collections that store preserved items, partly similar (partially interchangeable) to the lost ones. Summing up the results of the work, the study of the lost material cultural heritage is a promising scantily-explored direction of military history.

An analysis of Peronism constitutes an obligatory point of departure of any study of Argentina’s history since 1945. The advancement of the popular masses toward the Plaza de Mayo on 17 October 1945, clamoring for their new leader (the Colonel Juan Domingo Perón) inaugurated a new era for this nation. For some, especially for those who marched on that day, it represented the beginning of a period of hope. For others, those who looked with stupor at the crowds “invading” the city, this was the start of a decade of undemocratic practices and populist pseudo-fascist reforms. Perón’s rise to the presidency in 1946 would find the majority of the Argentine intelligentsia in the ranks of the opposition. The intellectuals were particularly worried by the emergence of this political movement which, in their eyes, was a combination of a local incarnation of European fascism and the ‘barbaric’ regime of the caudillo Juan Manuel de Rosas. In 1956, the writer Ezequiel Martínez Estrada summarized the horror that this march signified for the “decent people.” He declared it the threat of a “San Bartolomé del Barrio Norte” (an affluent neighborhood in Buenos Aires) and characterized the Peronists as “those sinister demons of the plains which Sarmiento described in El Facundo.” In his description Perón was depicted as a local Franco, a Mussolini or a Hitler. Only those intellectuals who defended different versions of local nationalism joined the enterprise of the colonel-turned-popular-politician and put their hopes in him.

The call comes from command to confirm the launch. While everyone at his station sees the missiles, he refuses to confirm the launch has occurred. Why five missiles? Wouldn’t a launch against the USSR be massive? It just doesn’t make sense. Abstract:

Abstract:
Mary Ward (1585–1645) is known as the foundress of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, an Order of women which continues to educate thousands of girls around the world. During the first decades of the seventeenth century, her foundation was a religious venture which aimed to transform the Catholic mission of recovery into one that catered for women as well as men. It maintained clandestine satellites on English soil and opened colleges on the Continent, in towns such as St Omer (1611), Liège (1616), Cologne and Trier (1620–1), Rome (1622), Naples and Perugia (1623), Munich and Vienna (1627) and Pressburg and Prague (1628). There, it trained its own members and undertook the education of externs and boarders. The Institute's vocation was not only to maintain the faith where it was already present but also to propagate it; as such, it went far beyond the accepted sphere of the feminine apostolate and its members were often labelled as rebels who strove to shake off the shackles of post-Tridentine religious life. To some modern historians, Mary Ward was an ‘unattached, roving, adventurous feminist’; to others, she was a foundress whose initiative deliberately set out to lay tradition to rest and begin a new era for the women in the Church.

Abstract:
Maize seeds, infected by Stenocarpella species, are important sources of inoculum for the introduction and dissemination of stalk and ear rot and macrospore leaf spot diseases. The use of healthy seeds is an important strategy for the preventive control of these diseases. However, one of the difficulties in the health quality control programs for maize seeds is the availability of a reliable and quick method for detecting these fungi during routine seed analyses. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to investigate the possibility of using the PCR technique as an alternative method for accurately detecting these pathogens in maize seed samples. Maize seeds were kept in contact with S. maydis colonie developed in PDA media containing mannitol at -1.4 MPa for 72 h. The seed samples used in this study were prepared with infected seeds at incidences of 100, 20, 10, 2, 1 and zero %.The primers used were able to detect S. maydis fungi in association with seeds with a maximum of 2% , however those primers were not able to differentiate between the two species.

Abstract:
From Solider of the Infantry to Soldier of the Fork: that's how Lieutenant-Colonel Nathaniel Newnham-Davis described himself to Britons who liked a good dinner, but who nonetheless struggled in “the spider web of a carte de jour.” His 1899 restaurant guide, Dinners and Diners: Where and How to Dine in London, was so successful that he updated it in 1901. By 1914, when Davis published Gourmet's Guide to London, he had launched a restaurant revolution. Unlike gastronomes before him, Davis systematically demystified the protocol of restaurant dining for hundreds of middle-class people who had been too intimidated to step inside one of them or to visit locales where less-expensive restaurant meals were available. Newnham-Davis recognized that his target audience—“the Respectable Classes,” as he referred to them—had little experience with the notion of eating for pleasure or leaving the security of home to venture out to a restaurant. Understanding their inhibitions, Newnham-Davis created a guidebook genre that offered a great deal more than the bare facts and lists that characterized typical guidebooks of the era, such as Baedeker's London and Its Environs.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the current data-intensive era, the traditional hands-on method of conducting scientific research by exploring related publications to generate a testable hypothesis is well on its way of becoming obsolete within just a year or two. Analyzing the literature and data to automatically generate a hypothesis might become the de facto approach to inform the core research efforts of those trying to master the exponentially rapid expansion of publications and datasets. Here, viewpoints are provided and discussed to help the understanding of challenges of data-driven discovery. The Panama Canal, the 77-kilometer waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, has played a crucial role in international trade for more than a century. However, digging the Panama Canal was an exceedingly challenging process. A French effort in the late 19th century was abandoned because of equipment issues and a significant loss of labor due to tropical diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. The United States officially took control of the project in 1902. The United States replaced the unusable French equipment with new construction equipment that was designed for a much larger and faster scale of work. Colonel William C. Gorgas was appointed as the chief sanitation officer and charged with eliminating mosquito-spread illnesses. After overcoming these and additional trials and tribulations, the Canal successfully opened on August 15, 1914. The triumphant completion of the Panama Canal demonstrates that using the right tools and eliminating significant threats are critical steps in any project.More than 100 years later, a paradigm shift is occurring, as we move into a data-centered era. Today, data are extremely rich but overwhelming, and extracting information out of data requires not only the right tools and methods but also awareness of major threats. In this data-intensive era, the traditional method of exploring the related publications and available datasets from previous experiments to arrive at a testable hypothesis is becoming obsolete. Consider the fact that a new article is published every 30 seconds (Jinha, 2010). In fact, for the common disease of diabetes, there have been roughly 500,000 articles published to date; even if a scientist reads 20 papers per day, he will need 68 years to wade through all the material. The standard method simply cannot sufficiently deal with the large volume of documents or the exponential growth of datasets. A major threat is that the canon of domain knowledge cannot be consumed and held in human memory. Without efficient methods to process information and without a way to eliminate the fundamental threat of limited memory and time to handle the data deluge, we may find ourselves facing failure as the French did on the Isthmus of Panama more than a century ago.Scouring the literature and data to generate a hypothesis might become the de facto approach to inform the core research efforts of those trying to master the exponentially rapid expansion of publications and datasets (Evans & Foster, 2011). In reality, most scholars have never been able to keep completely up-to-date with publications and datasets considering the unending increase in quantity and diversity of research within their own areas of focus, let alone in related conceptual areas in which knowledge may be segregated by syntactically impenetrable keyword barriers or an entirely different research corpus.Research communities in many disciplines are finally recognizing that with advances in information technology there needs to be new ways to extract entities from increasingly data-intensive publications and to integrate and analyze large-scale datasets. This provides a compelling opportunity to improve the process of knowledge discovery from the literature and datasets through use of knowledge graphs and an associated framework that integrates scholars, domain knowledge, datasets, workflows, and machines on a scale previously beyond our reach (Ding et al., 2013).

Abstract:
The object of the article is Alain Corneau's feature film "All the Mornings of the World" ("Tous les matins du monde", 1991). The movie is considered as a work of art with strong postmodern tendencies. The director uses music written in the XVIIth century to create an image of the era. The image of the gambist de Sainte-Colombe is formed on the basis of the aesthetic and emotional perception of his works by the creators of the movie. The timbre of viola da gamba, one of the key features of which is rapid fading, defines the main philosophical idea of the film. The "disadvantage" of the instrument, which contributed to its short life in art, is perceived by the filmmakers as its original value. The rapidly fading sound becomes a metaphorical symbol of dying and rebirth, death and immortality being one. In addition, Baroque music performs the function of temporary "immersion". Using the music of ancient styles, the film industry gains a foothold in true values and an element of authenticity. In turn, by participating in cinema, it appropriates the features of mass culture: lightness, illusiveness, and easy accessibility. Such ambivalence is also characteristic of the plot, in which events that evoke completely modern feelings take place against a historical background far removed from the present moment.

Abstract:
This is a publication of the letter of the Suceava Metropolitan Dositheus, apparently written in November, 1683. It was adressed to the leader of the Right-Bank Cossacks, Stefan Kunitsky. After being appointed hetman of the Cossacks by the Polish king Jan III Sobieski, he organized an invasion of Moldavia and a raid on the territory of the Budzhak horde in the autumn or winter of 1683. In the letter, Dositheus gave his permission to Kunitsky to divorce his wife, Elena, who was much older than him, and, accordingly, allowed a second marriage. Elena was the widow of G. Lesnitsky, an influential Cossack foreman of the 1650–1660s, and the marriage with her undoubtedly helped Kunitsky in raising his social status: he was part of the entourage of the Right-Bank hetman P. D. Doroshenko, later became a Cossack colonel under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, and finally managed to get the hetman title from the Polish king. The published document is a unique source that characterizes not only the political aspect of the Cossack-Moldovan relations in 1683, but also sheds light on the little-studied problem of career strategies and personal interests of individual representatives of the Ukrainian Cossacks in the era of Ruina (1660–1680s), for the implementation of which they used their military and political successes.

Abstract:
The first major example in what would become a long line of popular pre-1914 British invasion-scare narratives was the inflammatory 1871 tale The Battle of Dorking: Reminiscences of a Volunteer. Through its vivid depiction of a German invasion and conquest of Britain, this story was designed to serve as a warning to Britons about the necessity of securing the nation's defenses. The dramatic impact of this work on the Victorian reading public and the political culture of the era has been treated by a number of scholars, most notably I. F. Clarke. Yet little attention has been accorded to the reaction it elicited from the professional peers of its author, Lieutenant-Colonel George Chesney. This interdisciplinary essay – which joins the study of literature with military history and politics – seeks to shed new light on the circumstances surrounding this extraordinarily influential tale, as well as on the genre it popularized, in large part by examining its reception by British officers. It begins by describing the tale's prehistory and emergence into widespread popularity and then evaluates the work's reception within armed forces circles. Some of the most trenchant assessments of this literary text, it turns out, were delivered within the austere confines of the Royal United Service Institution, a body whose meetings functioned as the crucible in which British military and naval judgments were forged.

Abstract:
Modern Russian academic science pays close attention to the history of national state security agencies, noting that studying their experience is of high importance for understanding the functioning of state and society institutions, especially in the era of social cataclysms. The article presents previously unknown episode from the work of the Omsk Chekists at the final stage of the Civil War in Siberia concerning opposition of the Soviet state security agencies to the activities of the White counterintelligence and physical neutralization of its employees and agents in the RSFSR. The article is to analyze forms and methods of the special services opposing one another at the end of the Civil War in the East of Russia, using the example of the final stage in the biography of Lieutenant Colonel Gudimov-Gorsky. The studied issue is connected to the general historiography of the problem, emphasizing the relevance of research. The study draws on a complex of unpublished sources from Gudimov-Gorsky’s archival criminal case, which was in closed departmental storage during the Soviet period. The theoretical basis is anthropological and systematic approaches, problem-chronological and comparative-historical methods, which permits to trace the described military and political processes in the general context of functioning of state and society, attempting to comprehend, among other things, the influence of human factor and random element on the outcome of some precedents in the work of regional bodies of the Cheka. The final part of the article underscores debatable problematic points related to the limited source base and complexity of biographical identification of Gudimov-Gorsky. Thus, the study is deemed uncompleted, however, it opens a way to further development of the designated broad issue. The publication may be of interest to the specialists studying the Civil War in the East of Russia, activities of national state security agencies in the era of social cataclysms, existence of officers during the revolutionary processes, as well as socio-political life in the early Soviet society.

Abstract:
Alcune anomalie congenite, sebbene presenti alla nascita, non giungono all'attenzione clinica fino all'età adulta.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Objectives. To measure the distributed characteristics of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) constitutions, as well as related factors with biased TCM constitutions among the elderly individuals in Macau. Methods. The elderly individuals from elderly healthcare centers located in Macao Peninsula, Taipa, and Coloane were selected as research samples. The basic information questionnaire and the Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire (CCMQ) for elderly were employed. Descriptive analysis was applied to illustrate demographical characteristics and TCM constitution distribution. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to explore potential factors influencing biased constitutions, and weight of each variable for constitution was further calculated. Results. A total of 313 participants were recruited. Eighty-six (27.48%) elderly were identified as balanced constitution; others were biased constitutions accounting for 72.52%. Distribution differences related to gender and age were identified among participants with unbalanced constitutions. Four biased constitutions were further analyzed with EFA. For qi-stagnation and yang-deficiency constitutions, three similar factors were determined in the domains of education, sleeping habits, and lifestyle behaviors, successively. Although four factors were identified in phlegm-dampness constitution, the latter two belonged to lifestyle behaviors and the former two were education and sleeping habits. For yin-deficiency constitution, education, tobacco-alcohol consumption, sleeping habits, and exercise were four dimensions of potential influential factors. Tobacco consumption, sleep, and exercise duration weighted the most for qi-stagnation constitution; sleep duration, education level, and sugar-containing beverage intake for phlegm-dampness; length of education, alcohol consumption, and education level for yang-deficiency constitution; and weekly exercise hours, sleep duration, and education level for yin-deficiency constitution. Conclusion. The prevalence rate of biased constitutions was relatively high among elderly residents in Macau. Relations between demographical and lifestyle behavioral factors and biased constitutions were identified in this study. Controlling these influential factors might be beneficial for health management of Macau elderly individuals.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Nanoparticles have proven their dominance in many fields of research in this era. Such dominance resulted from outstanding physical and chemical properties amongst other materials, led to a wide focus from different researchers in various fields to further investigate the role of nanoparticles in various applications from drug delivery systems in medicine to catalysis in chemistry. In this research, active carbon-based catalyst synthesis and characterization were investigated for different applications in catalysis as the catalyst was combined with nickel oxides to be used in dye removal of methylene blue (MB). Water hyacinth is a floating perennial aquatic plant native to tropical and sub-tropical South America. The water hyacinth is one of the fastest-growing plants; it reproduces by way of runners or stolon. Each one can produce thousands of seeds each year, which can survive for more than 28 years. It has been considered as a water purifier and a solution to green water issues. Water hyacinth is used in perfume and cologne products, as well as organic fertilizer. It also absorbs lead, mercury, and carcinogens when used for remediation purposes. As it has amazing biomass, it can be used to produce fuels. Activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal, is a carbonaceous, highly porous absorptive medium of a complex structure composed of carbon atoms. It is used in gas purification, gold purification, metal extraction, medicine, sewage treatment, air filters, in gas masks used to purify liquids in many applications, including drinking water and odor removal. This research aims to prepare active carbon derived from water hyacinth and embedded with nickel nanoparticles. The water hyacinth will be converted into active carbon and used as a support for nickel nanoparticles. A comparison between active carbon derived from water hyacinth and activated nickel nanoparticles will be conducted to test the rate of absorbance based on the effect of time, concentration, and kinetic energy.

Abstract:
Background: The optimal interruption schedule for NOACs in patients undergoing invasive procedures has not been determined. This analysis describes periprocedural interruption of edoxaban in real world EMIT AF/VTE study. Methods: EMIT AF/VTE was a prospective, non-interventional study conducted in 7 European countries that collected detailed information on periprocedural management of edoxaban from 5 days before to 30 days after procedure in patients with AF or VTE. Results: Among 1155 patients, pre-procedural interruption occurred in 781 (68%) patients (median 2 days, IQR 1.0-2.0) and post-procedural interruption in 308 (27%) patients (median 3 days, IQR 1.0-8.0); 279 (24.2%) patients had both pre- and post-procedural interruption. Edoxaban interruption in some patients differed from 2018 EHRA Recommendations for NOAC use in AF. Of 294 patients receiving minor risk procedures, for whom no interruption is recommended, 173 (58.8%) had preprocedural interruption (median 1 day). Of 581 patients with low bleeding risk procedures, for whom ≥24h preprocedural interruption is recommended, 188 (32.4%) had no interruption. Of 280 patients receiving high bleeding risk procedures, for whom ≥48h interruption is recommended, 46 (16.4%) had no interruption. Clinical events are shown in Table. Conclusion: Edoxaban interruption schedules in routine practice were not always consistent with EHRA guidelines; nevertheless, rates of clinically significant bleeding or acute thromboembolic events or coronary syndromes were low in the EMIT study.

Abstract:
This study aimed to assess the biophysical parameters of the skin in Polish Konik horses (Polish primitive horses). According to the authors, this is the first assessment performed on such a wide scale in this group of animals. The evaluation carried out is innovative both with regards to the breed of the animals and the wide scope of the physicochemical skin assessment. The study group comprised mares, stallions and geldings, and the evaluations concerned transepidermal water loss, corneometry, pH, skin temperature assessment and mexametry. These parameters were assessed in five skin regions: the lips, the right ear, the prosternum, the right side of the neck and the chest. The measurements were taken after spreading the hair apart, with the use of a Multiprobe Adapter System (MPA®) and dedicated probes (Courage + Khazaka electronic GmbH, Cologne, Germany). The measurements revealed statistically significant differences in the values of transepidermal water loss in the lips in mares compared with stallions (P = 0.023) and also in stallions compared with geldings (P = 0.009). Corneometry showed significantly higher results in the neck region in mares compared with stallions (P = 0.037) and the prosternum areas in mares and geldings compared with stallions (P = 0.037 and P = 0.018). Skin pH measurement on the right side of the neck rendered significantly higher values in stallions than in mares (P = 0.037). In geldings, the skin temperature was significantly higher than in stallions (P = 0.049). Once the appropriate physicochemical values for specific animal species and breeds are determined, non-invasive methods of skin examination in many diseases and also methods of evaluation of the efficacy and/or adverse effects of applied medications can be established.

Abstract:
Aircraft noise causes a variety of negative health consequences, and annoyance is a central factor mediating stress-related health risks. Non-acoustic factors play an important role in the experience of annoyance where the aspect of fairness is assumed to be a vital component. This paper describes the development of the Aircraft Noise-related Fairness Inventory (fAIR-In) and examines its factorial validity, construct validity and predictive validity. The development of the questionnaire included expert consultations, statements from airport residents and a large-scale online survey around three German airports (N = 1367). Its items cover distributive, procedural, informational and interpersonal fairness. Via mailshot, almost 100,000 flyers were sent out in more (>55 dB(A) Lden)- and less (≤55 dB(A) Lden)-aircraft-noise-exposed areas around Cologne-Bonn, Dusseldorf and Dortmund Airport. Thirty-two items were carefully selected considering reliability, theoretical importance and factor loading calculated via exploratory factor analysis (EFA), with all facets achieving high internal consistency (α = 0.89 to 0.92). The factorial validity, analyzed via a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), revealed that viewing distributive, procedural, informational and interpersonal fairness as distinct factors produced a better fit to the data than other categorizations with fewer factors. The fAIR-In shows adequate results in terms of construct validity and excellent results in terms of the predictive validity of annoyance by aircraft noise (r = −0.53 to r = −0.68), acceptance of airports and air traffic (r = 0.46 to r = 0.59) and willingness to protest (r = −0.28 to r = −0.46). The fAIR-In provides airport managers with a reliable, valid and easy-to-use tool to design, monitor and evaluate efforts to improve the neighborliness between an airport and its residents.
