Full textHarlem’s gentrification is the result of a voluntarist set of public policies that profoundly transformed the neighborhood since the 1980s with a marked acceleration since the beginning of the 2000s. The first part of this study highlights the power struggle that led the city to chose this strategy mainly based on economic development. A broad definition of the concept of gentrification allows to grasp the extent and the implications of gentrification on housing, business, public safety and culture. Moreover, this provides a close analysis of the neighborhood that shows the specificities of Harlem’s gentrification process, such as black gentrification. The second part of this study demonstrates the extremely conflictual dimension of gentrification and the problems it raises in terms of democracy and spatial justice. Indeed, the public debate around issues like the expansion of Columbia University or the rezoning of 125th Street shows the deep disagreements existing among players about the vision of the city and its governance. This work analyzes closely the question of displacements that is so central to the debate over gentrification. Finally, this study examines local resistance to gentrification, strongly influenced by the concepts of right to the city and spatial justice

Full textThis dissertation looks into the Newburgh, New York affair so as to unfold the existence a strong conservative critique of welfare programs in New York State between 1945 and 1975. It thus purports to write a social and political history of local and grassroots mobilizations against welfare in the liberal Northeast

Full textBased on the principle that cities are well aware of their own position, this thesis shows how two world cities, Paris and New York, built their physical public space by interacting one with the other. This takes place in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. The particular dynamics of this relationship is due to the fact that, first Paris, then New York, is the foremost model of urban modernity. By studying, on both sides, the reciprocal knowledge, the expressions of urban desires, rejections and ambitions as well as urban visions in regards to the other city, this thesis reconstructs a complicated and passionate history. To do this, it analyses texts and images from the professional sphere of architects and engineers as well as from the public sphere and the art world. The history between Paris and New York, thanks to the reversal of one model toward the other, gives a new insight in the more generally cultural aspects that both world cities associate with the modernity of either one. It is a history where the desires and obstacles lead to a far more complexe relationship to modernity itself. Only superficially symmetrical, this relationship is, in fact, profoundly asymmetrical

Full textMy doctoral research concerns the study of Jewish life and culture in Lugo (Italy) thanks to a careful examination of the Register of deaths (Pinqas ha-nifṭarim) Qahal Qadosh Lugo, a source of great importance compiled in Hebrew between 1658 and 1825 and currently stored in the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, New York. The death recordings encompass almost two centuries and contain invaluable information about the history and Rabbis of the community. Of particular interest was the Barocco style of several poems composed in honour of leading people, the accurate description of the funerary culture of the Jews and for the genealogical reconstruction of many important Jewish families, such as Fano, Sinigaglia, Del Vecchio, Jacchia and others. This information has been compared with those present in the contemporary Community registers. The lists of members who participated in the board meetings, in fact, allow us to have a lot of information of great interest about the eminent members of the community and to reconstruct not only the demographic context of the Jewish community but also the evolution and ways of its development. The manuscript also contains the statutes of Ḥevrat Gemilut Ḥasadim (Good Works or Mercy Society) of Jewish community of Lugo. This association handled the burial of each member of the community and its activities specifically consisted in looking after the family members of the dying preparing the body before the burial; organizing the funeral procession and ceremony; cemetery maintenance; assisting mourners; saying ritual prayers; distributing provisions and medicine for sick people. It was instituted on 16 Hešwan 5418, i.e. 23rd October 1657. The text of the statutes shows a very interesting insight of religious and social welfare life of the Jews of Lugo.
Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris 8, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA080089.
Full textThe theme of inequality and its corollaries, such as poverty, insecurity, exclusion or segregation, comes more and more from a perspective of justice and concern at the same time the spatial and environmental issues. As to mark the paroxysm of inequalities, the issue of environmental justice comes revive the debate over access to resources within the social and spatial categories, as well as the debate about the unequal distribution and impact of externalities caused by the use of these resources from an environmental point of view. From New York to Dakar, despite the differences in socio-cultural and economic contexts, the same phenomena of inequality to environmental conditions are observed with some differences in the forms of manifestations and interpretations. This work aims to reflect on the variations that can have these phenomena of environmental injustice in the city of Dakar from an approach developed in American cities, the cradle of the protest movements. This work aims to reflect on the variations that can have these phenomena of environmental injustice in the city of Dakar from an approach developed in American cities, the cradle of the protest movements. Thus, based on the analysis of environmental pollution linked to industrial pollution, it is to show the importance of "contextualization" in the study of environmental injustice in terms of socio-spatial dynamics but also perceptions of the said situations of injustice

Full textThis dissertation focuses on the relationship between the artist's masculinity and mass-culture in the context of the 1910s avant-garde. Exiled in New York because of the war, several European artists, experienced an industrial, sexual and social modernity that led them to call into question their own identity as artists. Marcel Dchamp gave his most radical expression to this artistic crisis in a context dominated by the upheaval of the old sexual paradigms and the rise of industrial capitalism. The mechanization of labor, the development of mass- consumerism and the transformations in the condition of women strongly affected the avant-garde of the years and determined various strategies adopted by the artists in order to redefine their masculinity
