Aronson, Olov.

Abstract:
The subject of the thesis originates in the discovery of a pattern in Collins’ theory of interaction rituals. The pattern indicates that several important ideas and concepts in Collins’ theory can be conceived as individuals’ experiences of similarity. Based upon the discovery of this pattern, the aim of the thesis is to develop the basic features of a new theory that explains interaction rituals by centering upon individuals’ experiences of similarity. In order to accomplish the aim, the essay discusses four aspects of interaction rituals. In connection to the first aspect, an explanation is presented that reveals why individuals who experience similarity give each other support in their interaction rituals. Discussing the second aspect, the concept of effervescence of similarity is presented, which explains why experiences of similarity are crucial for generating emotional energy in interaction rituals. When developing the third aspect, a complete description of similarity theory is presented. Similarity theory explains interaction rituals by referring to individuals’ experiences of similarity. Finally, in the discussion of the fourth aspect, similarity theory is tested against empirical research. The concluding sections argue for ways in which similarity theory may contribute considerably to the understanding of interaction rituals. Also, suggestions for further research are presented.

McLean, Robert. "The legacy of Michael Collins, 1922-1932." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/19128.

Abstract:
To measure the impact of the Collins legacy, I have identified a set of key indicators: (a) The continuing impact of Collins’ action on events. (b) The continuing influence of his political ideas. (c) The behaviour of his entourage and followers. (d) The extent to which he has been interpreted and re-interpreted, by whom and why. Following an opening chapter which analyses Collins’ career, I have applied the above indicators to the issues and policy questions that concerned him at the time of his death: Firstly, the conduct and conclusions of the Civil War. I examine the different views as to whether or not Collins would have sanctioned the executions and reprisals policy which bequeathed its own bitter legacy. Secondly, I examine the tensions within the National Army over its development - politically-motivated cadre, or a professional army subservient to the Irish electorate? While the former view has its advocates I argue that those who enforced the latter vision were following the direction set by Collins. Central to my thesis is the argument that Michael Collins, more than any of his leading Pro-Treaty allies or Anti-Treaty opponents, detested the partition of Ireland. I argue that the gap between Collins’ expectation and the Boundary Commission’s report was a major failure of his legacy. By contrast, I argue that his Pro-Treaty heirs made an important contribution to transforming imperial relationships in the direction of the “association of free states” envisaged by Collins where he signed the Treaty. I discuss the extent to which the record of the Cumann na nGaedheal governments of 1922-1932 was primarily a vindication of, or a departure from, Collins. I also test De Valera and Fianna Fail’s claim on Collins’ legacy. The thesis also examines the efforts to airbrush Collins from the official history, and the reasons behind his ‘come-back’ in recent years including analysis of the significance of Collins’ biographers. An appendix examines a Scottish connection in the circumstances surrounding his death.

Full text
Abstract:
Treacher Collins Syndrome (TCS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by severe craniofacial defects. The syndrome is associated with mutations in the TCOF1 gene, which encodes a nucleolar phosphoprotein called treacle. Model organisms have been generated to model the disease and have revealed knowledge about the etiology and pathogenesis of the disorder. The craniofacial abnormality observed in TCS patients is found to be caused by an increased level of apoptosis in the neuroepithelium and from this it has been suggested that treacle is important for proper formation and proliferation of neural crest cells that will ultimately contribute to the face. The best attempt to rescue the phenotype of TCS was made by inhibiting the expression of p53 in both zebrafish and mouse models. Although both rescues were successful, it resulted in tumor formation in mice which limits the potential of using this type of rescue in humans. Therefore, it is very important to identify p53-downstream genes that were not 5 related to cancer and use them to interrupt the apoptosis pathway and hence rescuing the phenotype.

Mathews, Lisa Gay. "Crime and subversion in the later fiction of Wilkie Collins." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1993. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/695/.

Abstract:
Although some good work on Collins is now beginning to emerge, complex and central elements in his fiction require fuller exploration. More consideration is due to the development of Collins's thinking and fictional techniques in the lesser-known novels, since out of a total of thirty-four published works most have received scant attention from scholars. This is particularly true of the later fiction. It is to work of the later period (1870-1889) that I devote the fullest consideration, whilst giving due attention to the novels of the 1860s which are usually regarded as Collins's major novels. Collins perceived that established discourses on criminality, deviance, femininity and morality functioned as mechanisms with which the dominant masculine and middle-class hegemony attempted to confirm and maintain its power. His later fiction reveals the anxieties of masculine and middle-class narrator-figures. In his novels written in the 1860s Collins explored narrative and subnarrative. He developed the technique of using the accounts of various characters to challenge the perspective of the narrator-figure and created the persona of an omniscient narrator whose response to his creations reveals his own anxieties. The novels of Collins's later period develop such techniques to explore masculine apprehension at the changes occurring in late-Victorian society in which women and the working-classes were gaining greater freedom and middle-class dominance was threatened. Although narrators overtly argue the validity of standard discourses, their views are subverted by a level of sub-textual meaning at which the inadequacy of the narrators and their ideologies is revealed. Sub-textual meaning in the novels reveals tensions and anomalies within ideas of criminality, the Victorian ideal of womanhood, medical discourses and the idea of the gentleman and his counterpart, the knight errant figure. Collins's later fiction presents itself as an impressive attempt to explore the ideological and social tensions of rapidly changing late-Victorian England.

Abstract:
Two groups of patients were evaluated in an attempt to achieve more information on the oral health status, association with cleft lip and palate, soft tissue alterations and prevalence of dental anomalies in patients with craniofacial syndromes. One group comprised 19 patients with craniosynostosis syndromes (Apert, Crouzon, Pfeiffer and Saethre-Chotzen syndromes) and the other group included 15 patients with Treacher Collins syndrome. The study was conducted by means of clinical and radiographic examination and evaluation of plaque (PHP and visible plaque index), caries (dmf-t and DMFT) and gingival indexes. The efficacy of oral hygiene control performed by the patients was also investigated. Both groups displayed high plaque index and poor efficacy of toothbrushing, with no statistically significant difference between patients with and without syndactyly in the group with craniosynostosis syndromes. Despite the plaque accumulation, the caries and gingival indexes found were not meaningful. Most patients with Treacher Collins syndrome had cleft lip and palate, especially isolated cleft palate. No cases of cleft lip and palate were found in the group of craniosynostosis syndromes, which in turn displayed frequent occurrence of lateral palatal swellings, especially among patients with Apert and Crouzon syndromes. There was a high prevalence of dental anomalies for both groups, especially enamel opacities and tooth agenesis, which might be additional characteristics related to the syndromes that have not been reported in the literature so far. Based on these results, a dental therapeutic protocol is proposed for patients with the aforementioned syndromes.

Page, Leanne Nicole. "Masochistic pleasures of detection in the sensation novels of Wilkie Collins." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/7233.

Full text
Abstract:
This study analyzes and accounts for the mixed emotional responses to three Wilkie Collins novels: The Dead Secret (1857), The Woman in White (1860), and The Law and the Lady (1875). Contemporary reviews of these novels, in addition to Collins’s comments on the reception of his works, suggest that these novels elicited both positive and negative emotions in readers who took a “masochistic” pleasure in reading frustrating and often terrifying texts. In the role of detective, Collins’s reader is placed in the uncomfortable and untenable position of disciplinarian (ferreting out secrets and restoring moral order) and of transgressor (reading secret diaries, adopting disguises, eavesdropping, and spying). Collins’s novels portray scenes of masochistic reading: faced with the impossibilities of detection or interpretation resulting from the instability of text, Collins’s characters mimic the reader’s own frustrating interpretive activities. Detection that relies on the text as dependable evidence becomes a psychologically painful activity when texts do not open themselves up to easy interpretation. In addition to the mixed emotional responses produced by acts of detection, the act of reading novels generally (and the sensation novel in particular) has produced strong emotional responses in both literary critics and non-literary observers. The historical context of sensation novel adds an additionally masochistic “layer” or dimension to the reading of these novels. If sensation novels were considered guilty pleasures in of themselves, separate from the guilty pleasures of detection and interpretation of private secrets and criminal activities within the narratives, the guilty pleasure of reading sensation novels would reinforce the reader’s position as transgressor, in addition to his or her position as snooping amateur detective. My project engages existing scholarly works while approaching the subject of emotional responses to literary interpretation (mimicked by the detection in which the novels’ characters are engaged), and while looking at the affective combination of pleasure, terror, anticipation, and guilt, and its role in the popularity of Collins’s novels. This study employs contemporary and historical theories of emotion and masochism as well as scholarship on detective fiction to explain why detection in Collins’s novels is masochistically pleasurable for both readers and characters.

Dunham, Laura Grace. "The Domestic Architecture of Collins and Harman in Canterbury, 1883 – 1927." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Art History, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9399.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the domestic designs produced in Canterbury, New Zealand, by the architectural firm of Collins and Harman between 1883 and 1927. Architects John James Collins (1855 – 1933) and Richard Dacre Harman (1859 – 1927) were partners in the firm founded in Christchurch by William Barnett Armson (1833 – 1883) in 1870. Like many New Zealand architects practicing at the turn of twentieth century, Collins and Harman worked amidst a climate of major social and economic transformation, yet they managed to navigate these transitions with their personal connections and respected positions within the local architectural profession. From Collins and Harman’s surviving architectural drawings and office records, the firm’s ability to design residences in accordance with its clients’ wishes is evaluated. The methods with which they carried out designs, transacted business and secured future clients are also considered. The social standing of the firm’s clientele is emphasised to highlight the tight-knit nature of architectural patronage in Canterbury during this period. In order to assess the firm’s contribution to the development of domestic architecture in New Zealand, the local architectural profession, the firm’s reputation, and the effects that its built designs had on its clients and the local community are also investigated. While their major public and commercial designs are included in general surveys of New Zealand architecture, Collins and Harman tend to be overlooked as domestic architects in comparison with better-known contemporaries such as Samuel Hurst Seager and Cecil Wood. In catering to the requirements of a diverse clientele, the firm adopted varied approaches in its designs, which illustrate a more complex evolution than the linear progression usually found in standard architectural historical methodologies. Divided chronologically into four distinct periods, the thesis focuses on key commissions to chart the firm’s development over forty-four years within the context of the evolution of domestic architecture in Canterbury. The diversity in its domestic work engendered by the firm’s professionalism demonstrates that Collins and Harman made a substantial and vital contribution in the development of domestic architecture in Canterbury.

Full text
Abstract:
The term "feminist," when applied to Wilkie Collins, implies he was concerned with rectifying the oppression of women in domestic life as well as with promoting equal rights between the sexes. This study explores Collins the "feminist" by analyzing his portrayals of women, particularly his most powerful feminine creations: his villainesses. Although this focus is somewhat limited, it allows for a detailed analysis of the development of Collins's attitudes towards powerful women from the beginning to the end of his career. It examines the relationship between Collins's developing moral attitudes and social beliefs, on the one hand, and the ideas of Victorian feminists such as Josephine Butler and feminist sympathizers such as John Stuart Mill, on the other. This interaction, while never overt, reveals the ambivalence and complexity of Collins's "feminist" attitudes. Of the five novels in this study, Antonina (1850), Basil (1852), Armadale (1866), Jezebel's Daughter (1880), and The Legacy of Cain (1889), only one was published at the zenith of Collins's career in the 1860s. Each of the villainesses in these novels, their ideas and experiences, are crucial to understanding Collins's "feminist" impulses. Looking at them as powerful women who detest domestic oppression, one becomes aware that Collins feared such powerful women. But at the same time, he found something fiercely attractive about them. One also realizes that he was never fully capable of breaking the prevailing literary conventions which dictated that wickedness be punished and virtue rewarded (The Legacy of Cain is perhaps an exception, depending on how one views Helena's feminist revolution). The reading of Collins's novels offered in this study presents a broad, eclectic approach, utilizing the tenets of a number of different theoretical approaches such as new historicism, psychoanalytic criticism, and deconstruction, as well as feminist criticism. It contextualizes Collins's novels and his "feminist" concerns within the framework of other contemporary feminist ideas and the critical responses his works received.

Abstract:
Suzanne Collin’s trilogy The Hunger Games has become an international bestseller, and tells the story about Katniss Everdeen, a young citizen of District 12 in Panem. The object of this essay is to demonstrate that nurturing, being a warrior and pursuing beauty are the most idealized behaviors in The Hunger Games trilogy. By analyzing these behaviors from a gender perspective, based on the standpoint of Western society, I demonstrate how nurturing and pursuing beauty are feminine behaviors, and being a warrior is a masculine behavior. Furthermore, I outline how the characters’ behavior reflects their upbringings or the circumstances they are in. I conclude by considering what the popularity of Collins’s series indicates about contemporary perceptions of these behaviors, that are traditionally deemed as feminine or masculine in Western society. The result of the analysis indicates that the characters are being rewarded for both feminine and masculine behaviors. However, the characters showing a combination of both feminine and masculine traits gain more than the characters that possess either feminine or masculine qualities only. The contemporary views on femininity and masculinity are changing in Western society, and The Hunger Games trilogy gives us an indication about today’s view on the gendered behaviors in this essay.

Taylor, Jenny Bourne. "Wilkie Collins and nineteenth-century psychology : cultural significance and fictional form." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1987. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/110020/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers the relationship between the novels of Wilkie Collins and nineteenth-century psychological methods and ideas. It explores the ways in which Collins extrapolates from these theories by appropriating them as means both of generating suspense and resolving tension, and shows how an investigation of these psychological ideas elucidates his fiction. The Introduction briefly reviews Collins's development as a sensation novelist in relationship to contemporary sensation fiction. Chapter One outlines the wide range of psychological ideas that have a direct bearing on Collins's work. It considers, firstly, how the meaning both of insanity and of social identity was shaped by the development of the asylum system and the precepts of moral management - precepts that encapsulated many of the aspirations of early Victorian liberalism. Secondly it considers mid- nineteenth-century debates on the workings of the mind: debates about how to understand identity, about how to analyse the workings of the consciousness, and about how to interpret the significance of aberrant states and unconscious mental processes. Thirdly it summarises how conceptions of evolution and heredity developed in the second half of the nineteenth century. The analysis of the novels emphasises Collins's development of narrative strategies. It explores how he both assimilates and resists contemporary psychological perceptions in his manipulation of narrative perspective and time, and how the development of this narrative method links the conjuring with perception and cognition with the exploration of the subjective shaping of social identity. Moral management provides the overarching framework for Collins's stories and is usually the source of narrative resolution, but it is qualified and undermined. In Basil and The Woman in White it is a primary source of tension and suspense; in No Name it is both undermined and underpinned by juggling with contrasting notions of evolution. Armadale draws on contemporary theories of dreams to explore social and psychic inheritance and transmission; The Moonstone appropriates contrasting theories of the unconscious in a complex cognitive investigation. The final chapter briefly discusses a selection of the later novels, considering their distinctive features, and arguing that the growing dominance of theories of degeneration had an important bearing on Collins's method in his later work.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Studies concentrating on the value of disease in novels by Collins or Dickens often adopt a medical point of view, showing that the novelists depict illness with the eyes of trained clinicians, offering surprisingly precise case studies and diagnoses. This approach sheds light on some episodes; yet, the “medico-realists” seem to overlook that by viewing literature through a medical prism, they are using the tools and rationale of a constructed discourse. Pathology, which is the science that studies the disease and not the disease itself, was created all long the 19th century. Viewing the novelists’ treatment of disease only through the filter of pathology gives a reductive image of the way they understand morbidity. This research aims at deconstructing the medical discourse, and at showing how, to take up Dickens’s words, “for theories, as for organised beings, there is also a Natural Selection and a Struggle for Life”, which str! uggle scientific medicine has apparently won. Doctors have used other types of discourse to create their own, and in so doing, novels have been a great source of inspiration. After positing that medicine creates a myth of positivism, this study goes on to analyse the way Dickens and Collins considered the rise of this new field. Unlike what medico-realists seem to take for granted, the novelists did not subscribe to the new medical methods and even denied understanding disease according to pathological categories. Their use of diseases unexpectedly unveils the way doctors wrote and imagined disease. Studying Dickens’s and Collins’s ways of conceiving pathology offers insight into the imaginary origins of a burgeoning science

Witty, Leslie. "Shadow of Death: A Fantasy Theme Analysis of the Floyd Collins Tragedy." TopSCHOLAR®, 2002. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/595.

Full text
Abstract:
Floyd Collins, a Kentucky caver who suffered a lengthy entrapment and eventual death inside Sand Cave in 1925, has had his story told repeatedly and in numerous forms. Although the countless genres (and their historical accuracy) vary, they are basically retellings of the same story—a story filled with drama, suspense, and heroics. Because of these characteristics, the rhetoric of the Floyd Collins ordeal lent itself to examination using Bormann's (1972) fantasy theme method. By using a fantasy theme analysis to explore the saga, I advanced beyond the retellings and gained a greater understanding of why seventy-seven years after he died alone in a Kentucky cave, Floyd Collins' story survives. Specifically, this researcher identified and examined dominant rhetorical visions and communities that emerged from the tragedy and how these influenced the story's perpetuation and continued audience appeal. The method for this study consisted of collecting and analyzing rhetoric produced both during and after Collins' entrapment to reconstruct rhetorical visions. Four dominant rhetorical visions of Floyd Collins were explored: Collins as a tragic hero, Collins as a victim of greed, Collins as a devoted suitor, and Collins as an uneducated hillbilly.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate and determine the potential value of company X's “companyvision” as a brand platform (brand book). This study uses only the first part of the vision, the "core ideology”. The theory is based solely on Jim Collins and Jerry Porras (management) theories about “company vision” (from the book "Built to Last"). It is these theories that Company X has worked with to create a brand platform / manual (brand book). The thesis addressed in this work is the following: • Is Collins & Porras theories of “company vision” a good way to create a brand book for the company X? The basis for this study is the employees (on company X) and their opinions about their new brand platform (brand book). The employees received a questionnaire with questions regarding their views of different aspects of Collins & Porras theories. The areas which they were questioned about were: the results, the process, and their attitudes towards Collins and Porras theories, after having to work according to them for a longer period of time. It is from the questionnaire the study finds its results and conclusions. In the report's findings, we see that company X, in which the study is conducted, is generally sympathetic to the use of Collins and Porras theories and that brand platform can act as a basis for brand book. The study also addresses perhiperal opinions from the Company X, like opinions about applicability to other organizations and if they think that something is missing from the Collins and Porras theories. In the final part of the "Conclusions", we see that the thesis: " Is Collins & Porras theories of “company vision” a good way to create a brand book for the company X?" can be regarded as proved. In addition to the main thesis the author presents interesting opinions in the chapter “discussion” that may be of interest to the reader, these findings are interesting but may not be 100% scientifically proved.

Hansen, Tessa Louise. "Illegitimacy in the Mid-Victorian Novels of Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins." Thesis, University of Canterbury. English, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/919.

Full text
Abstract:
The fiction of Dickens and Collins abounds with references to the illegitimate. In the mid-Victorian period there is an increase in illegitimate characters and circumstances which relates both to the topicality of the issue and to events in the authors individual and collaborative private lives. Illegitimacy addresses personal and social anxieties in four major novels of the 1850s and 1860s: Bleak House (1852-53), Little Dorrit (1855-57) by Dickens and The Woman in White (1860) and No Name (1862) by Collins. Dickens analyses illegitimacy in Bleak House psychologically and socially through Esther Summerson, but her narrative reveals contradictions between Dickens challenge of contemporary attitudes towards the illegitimate and his subscription to the moral code behind the views. In Little Dorrit Dickens confines his study of illegitimacy to character in order to examine the psychological consequences of illegitimacy on the individual. The novel suggests that illegitimacy is another form of social and legal imprisonment. In contrast in The Woman in White Collins exploits the sensationalism surrounding illegitimacy by using it to create an exciting plot at the inception of the sensation genre. His suggestion in this novel that bastards are legally blank and able to reconstruct their identity is continued in No Name; this later novel directly challenges the laws defining and controlling illegitimacy. While Collins never matches Dickens integration of social and moral issues into the novel s structure, the older author appreciated Collins strength in creating detective narratives. Illegitimacy was relevant to the private lives of both Dickens and Collins in the period. While the authors always tried to keep their public and private lives separate, their romantic relationships reveal a personal motive for discussing the plight of the illegitimate in their novels. There is a distinct possibility that Dickens had an illegitimate child with his mistress Ellen Ternan while Collins had three illegitimate children with Martha Rudd. The novels articulate the tension between what Dickens and Collins the authors were trying to achieve and what the novels themselves disclose.

Abstract:
This essay is based on the argument that Wilkie Collins, in his novel The Woman in White (1859), the first sensational novel and prequel to the detective genre, challenges stereotypical female roles in his presentation of the two sisters Laura Fairlie and Marian Halcombe. Through a comparative analysis of the two sisters, it is shown that Laura represents the traditional Victorian woman, while Marian challenges these ideals, and, through her, Collins creates a new type of literary heroine. The relationship between the sisters is also examined in more detail than has been done before. In addition to this analysis, the essay also contains a didactic chapter which demonstrates how a teacher can use The Woman in White in the language classroom as well as showing how this will benefit the development of students’ language, critical thinking and knowledge of literature.

Full text
Abstract:
Focusing on the novels of Wilkie Collins, this thesis identifies the ways in which Collins’s narratives outline the complex nature of layperson interactions with, and experiences of, medicine, healthcare and illness in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Drawing on a variety of contextual sources, ranging from letters, diaries and recipe books to newspaper articles, architectural plans and courtroom testimonies, the discussion uses Collins’s work alongside these documents to demonstrate that many of his middle-class readers would have encountered aspects of medicine and illness in a surprising array of settings, spaces, discourses and domains. In bringing these points of intersection to light, the thesis argues that Collins’s work stands as a substantial record of how the lay public energetically and intelligently engaged with medical matters – a point often overlooked – but also emphasises Collins’s own vibrant interest in medicine, bodies and illness. In so doing, the discussion is able to draw out new dimensions to Collins’s treatment of key themes, such as the relationships between bodies and gender, architecture and illness, and medicine and literature, and to provide new readings of a range of his major and lesser-known works.

Brown, Lucy Victoria. "Devotion and identity in the works of Edmund Yates and Wilkie Collins." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/10032/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis analyses the sensation novels of Edmund Yates and Wilkie Collins with emphasis on the representation of devotion within the texts. The thesis examines the depictions of four distinct types of character, the wife, the female friend, the disabled male and the servant, and identifies a trend within the novels of Yates and Collins whereby characters defy the conventional power structures of class and gender, obtaining agency via acts of devotion that nevertheless also perform and reinforce conventional social structures. The devotion between characters can therefore be understood as a force that ‘queers’ identity, reconfiguring relationships in ways that unsettle the bounds of heteronormativity. The sensational devotion of Yates and Collins is analysed in the context of the periodical press with which both Yates and Collins were closely involved. By using periodical articles as indicators of contemporary opinion and argument, the thesis explores Yates’s and Collins’s divergence from cultural norms, a divergence that opens up new possibilities for the sensation genre. Via these discussions the thesis seeks to re-assert Yates as a significant member of the sensation canon.

Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is an autosomal dominant disorder affecting craniofacial development. The syndrome is caused by mutations in the TCOF1 gene, located in chromosome 5 (5q32). Combining SSCP and sequencing, we established an efficient method of screening for mutations in the TCOF1 gene, allowing us to offer diagnostic tests to patients with clinical signs of TCS. We detected a pathogenic mutation in 39/43 (90.7%) of patients ascertained at the Centro de Estudos do Genoma Humano and in 23/48 (48%) of patients referred to Johns Hopkins Medical Institute. We therefore characterized 43 novel pathogenic mutations and 16 novel polymorphisms in the TCOF1 gene. We described a pathogenic missense mutation located in a conserved region of the protein, which led us to propose the existence of a critical function domain in its N-terminus. After screening 24 patients with craniofacial anomalies resembling TCS but without a precise clinical diagnosis for mutations in the TCOF1 gene, we found no pathogenic mutation and concluded that, despite its broad clinical spectrum, TCS is well characterized in clinical grounds. We also screened, for the first time, two families in which the segregation of the phenotype suggested autosomal recessive inheritance. No mutation was detected in these families, despite linkage analysis with markers from 5q31-34 not excluding this region. We used molecular techniques for the first time to test the hypothesis that sporadic mutations in TCS arise preferentially in the male germ line and their frequency increases with age. As opposed to what the literature suggested, in ten informative cases we had 7 mutations of paternal origin and 3 originating in the female germ line, with no detectable age effect.

Abstract:
'The World is Hard on Women'; Women and Marriage in the Novels of Wilkie Collins" examines the ways in which Collins sympathetically explores the situations of women in relation to marriage and to society in general. Each of the first five chapters deals with a particular topic relating to women and marriage, showing how these topical themes recur and develop through Collins's novels. Chapter One, "Marriage, Money and Power", looks at mercenary marriages in which husbands exploit there wives, or in which wives attempt to exploit their husbands. Chapter Two, "The Magdalen Theme", examines Collins's treatment of the question of "fallen" women, and his different attempts to plead for the reintegration of such women back into the fabric of conventional society. Chapter Three, "Marriage Breakdowns", discusses the situation of women who find themselves deserted by their husbands, and facing a hostile and Judgemental reaction from their social peers. Chapter Four, "Unmarried Women", shows Collins's sympathetic portrayal of diminution of power and importance of those women who either choose not to, or who are unable to marry. Chapter Five, "Widows" discusses the role played by widows as trustees of male power, and guardians to the younger generation. Chapter Six, "The Fallen Leaves", draws on the material discussed in the first five chapters in order to make a detailed examination of Collins's extensive treatment of topics related to women and marriage in The Fallen Leaves. The thesis concludes that Collins was very aware of, and radically sympathetic to the problems faced by women in Victorian society, and that this sympathy and knowledge form an important feature of his writing.
