Abstract:
Mr. and Mrs. Collings were the unremarkable registered proprietors of their house, until they had the misfortune to deal with Mr. Lee. Lee purported to act for them in finding a purchaser for the house, and he found a Mr. Styles. Mr. and Mrs. Collings then executed a transfer of the house to Styles in consideration of £250,000, but “Styles” was simply an alias used by Lee, and no part of the £250,000 was ever paid to them. The net result, therefore, was that Lee fraudulently procured the transfer of the house from Mr. and Mrs. Collings to himself, for no consideration. Once registered as proprietor of the house, Lee mortgaged it to the Leeds Permanent Building Society and took the mortgage proceeds. Mr. and Mrs. Collings remained in actual occupation of the house throughout. When Lee’s fraud came to light, Mrs. Collings sought rectification of the register, to reinstate her as proprietor of the house free of the mortgage. (Her husband had died in the meantime, and she had acquired his rights by survivorship.) The Court of Appeal upheld her claim: Collings v. Lee [2001] 2 All E.R. 332.

Aronson, Olov. "Likhetsteorin : En teoretisk utveckling av Collins interaktionsritualer." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för sociala och psykologiska studier, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-33306.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of the thesis originates in the discovery of a pattern in Collins’ theory of interaction rituals. The pattern indicates that several important ideas and concepts in Collins’ theory can be conceived as individuals’ experiences of similarity. Based upon the discovery of this pattern, the aim of the thesis is to develop the basic features of a new theory that explains interaction rituals by centering upon individuals’ experiences of similarity. In order to accomplish the aim, the essay discusses four aspects of interaction rituals. In connection to the first aspect, an explanation is presented that reveals why individuals who experience similarity give each other support in their interaction rituals. Discussing the second aspect, the concept of effervescence of similarity is presented, which explains why experiences of similarity are crucial for generating emotional energy in interaction rituals. When developing the third aspect, a complete description of similarity theory is presented. Similarity theory explains interaction rituals by referring to individuals’ experiences of similarity. Finally, in the discussion of the fourth aspect, similarity theory is tested against empirical research. The concluding sections argue for ways in which similarity theory may contribute considerably to the understanding of interaction rituals. Also, suggestions for further research are presented.

McLean, Robert. "The legacy of Michael Collins, 1922-1932." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/19128.

Full text
Abstract:
To measure the impact of the Collins legacy, I have identified a set of key indicators: (a) The continuing impact of Collins’ action on events. (b) The continuing influence of his political ideas. (c) The behaviour of his entourage and followers. (d) The extent to which he has been interpreted and re-interpreted, by whom and why. Following an opening chapter which analyses Collins’ career, I have applied the above indicators to the issues and policy questions that concerned him at the time of his death: Firstly, the conduct and conclusions of the Civil War. I examine the different views as to whether or not Collins would have sanctioned the executions and reprisals policy which bequeathed its own bitter legacy. Secondly, I examine the tensions within the National Army over its development - politically-motivated cadre, or a professional army subservient to the Irish electorate? While the former view has its advocates I argue that those who enforced the latter vision were following the direction set by Collins. Central to my thesis is the argument that Michael Collins, more than any of his leading Pro-Treaty allies or Anti-Treaty opponents, detested the partition of Ireland. I argue that the gap between Collins’ expectation and the Boundary Commission’s report was a major failure of his legacy. By contrast, I argue that his Pro-Treaty heirs made an important contribution to transforming imperial relationships in the direction of the “association of free states” envisaged by Collins where he signed the Treaty. I discuss the extent to which the record of the Cumann na nGaedheal governments of 1922-1932 was primarily a vindication of, or a departure from, Collins. I also test De Valera and Fianna Fail’s claim on Collins’ legacy. The thesis also examines the efforts to airbrush Collins from the official history, and the reasons behind his ‘come-back’ in recent years including analysis of the significance of Collins’ biographers. An appendix examines a Scottish connection in the circumstances surrounding his death.

alsayegh, khaled. "Identification of apoptosis pathway in Treacher Collins Syndrome." VCU Scholars Compass, 2009. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1859.

Full text
Abstract:
Treacher Collins Syndrome (TCS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by severe craniofacial defects. The syndrome is associated with mutations in the TCOF1 gene, which encodes a nucleolar phosphoprotein called treacle. Model organisms have been generated to model the disease and have revealed knowledge about the etiology and pathogenesis of the disorder. The craniofacial abnormality observed in TCS patients is found to be caused by an increased level of apoptosis in the neuroepithelium and from this it has been suggested that treacle is important for proper formation and proliferation of neural crest cells that will ultimately contribute to the face. The best attempt to rescue the phenotype of TCS was made by inhibiting the expression of p53 in both zebrafish and mouse models. Although both rescues were successful, it resulted in tumor formation in mice which limits the potential of using this type of rescue in humans. Therefore, it is very important to identify p53-downstream genes that were not 5 related to cancer and use them to interrupt the apoptosis pathway and hence rescuing the phenotype.
