Abstract:
School and college reopening-closure policies are considered one of the most promising non-pharmaceutical interventions for mitigating infectious diseases. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of these policies is still debated, largely due to the lack of empirical evidence on behavior during implementation. We examined U.S. college reopenings’ association with changes in human mobility within campuses and in COVID-19 incidence in the counties of the campuses over a twenty-week period around college reopenings in the Fall of 2020. We used an integrative framework, with a difference-in-differences design comparing areas with a college campus, before and after reopening, to areas without a campus and a Bayesian approach to estimate the daily reproductive number (Rt). We found that college reopenings were associated with increased campus mobility, and increased COVID-19 incidence by 4.9 cases per 100,000 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.9–6.9), or a 37% increase relative to the pre-period mean. This reflected our estimate of increased transmission locally after reopening. A greater increase in county COVID-19 incidence resulted from campuses that drew students from counties with high COVID-19 incidence in the weeks before reopening (χ2(2) = 8.9, p = 0.012) and those with a greater share of college students, relative to population (χ2(2) = 98.83, p < 0.001). Even by Fall of 2022, large shares of populations remained unvaccinated, increasing the relevance of understanding non-pharmaceutical decisions over an extended period of a pandemic. Our study sheds light on movement and social mixing patterns during the closure-reopening of colleges during a public health threat, and offers strategic instruments for benefit-cost analyses of school reopening/closure policies.

The register of the Scots College, Douai, was printed in Records of the Scots Colleges I, New Spalding Club (Aberdeen, 1906).1 It ends in 1772, but does not contain the names of the secular students after 1765, when the Jesuits were expelled from France. The rector, John Riddoch, S. J., and his students moved to Dinant, taking the register with them, and it is the Dinant register that is printed. The college at Douai re-opened with a secular priest, Robert Grant, as rector, but no register survives for the period from 1765 until the final closure in 1793.2

Abstract:
Public education is a main target of the assault on the public sector; recently corporate education reformers have expanded their agenda to include the open-access community colleges, which enroll 40 percent of U.S. college students. City College of San Francisco was threatened with closure for resisting this policy agenda. The faculty union, students, and community groups led by people of color waged and won a five-year battle to save it. Although not unscathed, today the college is open, accredited, and free. In the continuing war on working-class community institutions, this struggle offers valuable lessons for coalitions of labor and social movements.

Abstract:
It is more than twenty-five years since the English College Lisbon closed. While it may still be too soon to give a complete account of that closure, one can consider some of the events in its more recent history that preceded its final end. The closure cannot be attributed solely to the conditions obtaining in 1971 and the decline in the recruitment to the secular clergy of England and Wales. In that year vocations to the priesthood had not yet reached their lowest point. Moreover, throughout its 350 years Lisbon had not depended for its viability on enrolling a large number of students. It had always been a small college. Although its primary purpose was to prepare men for the priesthood it had frequently found itself having to fulfil other functions in addition to those of a seminary.

Abstract:
Background Cyanoacrylates are fast-acting adhesives used in procedural medicine including closure of superficial wounds, embolization of truncal vessels pre-operatively, vascular anomalies, visceral false aneurysms, endoleaks, gastrointestinal varices and gastrointestinal bleeding. More recently, catheter-directed cyanoacrylate adhesive closure was introduced as an alternative to endovenous thermal ablation (ETA) to occlude superficial veins of the lower limbs. Objectives To formulate policies for the safe and effective delivery of cyanoacrylate adhesive closure procedures in Australasia, based on current experience and evidence. Methods A panel of phlebologists including vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, dermatologists and research scientists systematically reviewed the available data on cyanoacrylate products used in medicine and shared personal experience with the procedure. The reviewed material included bibliographic and biomedical data, material safety data sheets and data requested and received from manufacturers. Results and recommendations: Cyanoacrylate adhesive closure appears to be an effective treatment for saphenous reflux with occlusion rates at 36 months of 90–95%. We recommend a maximum dose of 10 mL of cyanoacrylate per treatment session. Serious complications are rare, but significant. Hypersensitivity to acrylates is reported in 2.4% of the population and is an important absolute contraindication to cyanoacrylate adhesive closure. 1 Post-procedural inflammatory reactions, including hypersensitivity-type phlebitis, occur in 10–20% of patients. 2 In the long term, cyanoacrylate adhesive closure results in foreign-body granuloma formation within 2–12 months of the procedure. We recommend against the use of cyanoacrylate adhesive closure in patients with uncontrolled inflammatory, autoimmune or granulomatous disorders (e.g. sarcoidosis). Caution should be exercised in patients with significant active systemic disease or infection and alternative therapies such as thermal ablation and foam sclerotherapy should be considered. Conclusions Cyanoacrylate adhesive closure appears to be an effective endovenous procedure, with short-term closure rates comparable to ETA and therefore greater efficacy than traditional surgery for treating superficial veins of the lower limbs. Ongoing data collection is required to establish the long-term safety.

Abstract:
Objective: To understand the differences between medical college students and non-medical college students in terms of cognition, attitude and prevention and control behavior of COVID-19 virus during the normal epidemic prevention and control stage. Methods: Questionnaires were issued to students of Chongqing Medical University and other colleges and universities across the country and data were collected powered by www.wjx.cn.Later, SPSS26.0 and Excel were used for statistical analysis and processing of the survey data. Results: A total of 333 valid questionnaires were collected in this survey, including 210 valid questionnaires for medical college students (63.1%) and 123 valid questionnaires for non-medical college students (36.1%). There are statistically significant differences between the two types of college students in cognitive level, school closure policy and government management policy (P<0.05).In terms of cognition, when students majoring in medicine and students majoring in non-medicine are asked whether asymptomatic infected persons can become the source of infection (P=0.019), and when COVID-19 is exposed to high concentration of aerosol in a relatively closed environment for a long time, There were significant differences in the answers to questions such as whether aerosol transmission is possible (P=0.001), whether N95 and surgical masks can effectively isolate COVID-19 virus (P=0.001); In terms of attitude, there was a significant difference between the two types of students only on whether the school closure policy and the government's policy of "no visiting and no gathering" was necessary (P=0.01).In terms of prevention and control behavior, there was no statistical significance between medical college students and non-medical college students (P>0.05).Conclusion: College students have a higher level of awareness of the COVID-19 epidemic, but the level of awareness of medical students is significantly higher than that of non-medical students; non-medical students have a higher degree of recognition of COVID-19-related policies than medical students; there is no difference in behavior between the two.College students need to improve their awareness, attitudes and behaviors about the epidemic through various methods, and universities and the government should cooperate with each other to establish and improve the epidemic prevention and control system, and promote college students to become a firm group fighting against the epidemic.

Abstract:
Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess students’ readiness to go back to college after closure due to COVID-19. Methodology: The study used a descriptive cross-sectional design which was done at KMTC-Mombasa Campus. Participants (Students) were selected using multi stage sampling and sample size determination was done using Fischer’s statistical formula at a confidence level of (p=95%), n=253. Data was obtained using a structured questionnaire through online surveys and focused group discussions via online platform. Data analysis was done using SPSS and Excel then results presented using tables and narrations. Results: 76.7% (194) of the respondents were ready to get back to college immediately while 23.3% (59) were willing to resume studies later. The main reason for respondents wanting to go back to college immediately was to finish school (n=60). 67.8 % (40) of the respondents who wanted to go back later feared contracting COVID-19. 78% (175) of respondents were aware that college had been used as quarantine center yet they were still ready to go back to college immediately. Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The closure of learning institutions globally during the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented. Readiness of college students to resume studies in an institution used as a quarantine centre for clients suspected of having a highly infectious disease has not been examined in literature. The findings of this study are useful to policy makers and leaders in education sector as normalcy resumes and learning institutions are opened.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to record the outcome of healing in laparotomy wounds, managed by delayed versus primary skin closure in terms of hospital stay, major and minor wound infection. Design and Duration: Quasi experimental study from September, 2006 to March, 2007. Setting: Surgical floor of Allied Hospital, (Punjab Medical College) Faisalabad. Methodology: Detailed data of each patient including presentation, operative findings, procedure performed, post operative outcome was entered on a specially designed proforma. The main outcome measures found significant were major and minor wound infection, time of presentation and advancing age and hospital stay. Results: Sixty patients underwent exploratory laparotomy through vertical abdominal incision during Sep.2006 to Mar.2007. Skin wound of the first thirty patients (group A) were left open and closed on 4th day while that of next thirty patients (group B) closed primarily. Out of sixty patients ten patients developed major wound infection leading to wound dehiscence (16.66 %). Four belonged to group A(13.33%) and six belonged to group B(20 %) (p<0.05). In advancing age the infection rate was significantly high in the same group (p <0.01). Regarding hospital stay of patients of two groups the difference was statistically significant. Group A (mean=7.77, std. dev=2.029 and std. error of mean=0.370). Group B (mean=10.30, std. dev=4.822 and std. error of mean=0.880). Regarding age the difference was not statistically significant between two groups. Group A (mean 30.47, std. dev=10.099 and std error of mean=1.844). The data was analyzed using SPSS 17 Chi-square test was used to test the significance between qualitative variable, p<0.05 was considered significance. Conclusions: No matter how advanced new wound closure techniques are, wound infection is the single most important factor for wound dehiscence and it can be decreased by using delayed skin closure technique and meticulous post-operative monitoring and care.

Abstract:
Pose graph optimization algorithm is a classic nonconvex problem which is widely used in simultaneous localization and mapping algorithm. First, we investigate previous contributions and evaluate their performances using KITTI, Technische Universität München (TUM), and New College data sets. In practical scenario, pose graph optimization starts optimizing when loop closure happens. An estimated robot pose meets more than one loop closures; Schur complement is the common method to obtain sequential pose graph results. We put forward a new algorithm without managing complex Bayes factor graph and obtain more accurate pose graph result than state-of-art algorithms. In the proposed method, we transform the problem of estimating absolute poses to the problem of estimating relative poses. We name this incremental pose graph optimization algorithm as G-pose graph optimization algorithm. Another advantage of G-pose graph optimization algorithm is robust to outliers. We add loop closure metric to deal with outlier data. Previous experiments of pose graph optimization algorithm use simulated data, which do not conform to real world, to evaluate performances. We use KITTI, TUM, and New College data sets, which are obtained by real sensor in this study. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed incremental pose graph algorithm model is stable and accurate in real-world scenario.

Abstract:
Introduction: Non-descent vaginal hysterectomy has been considered a valid alternative to the abdominal approach and is also preferred for benign uterine diseases without descent of uterus because it is associated with fewer complications. Vaginal vault is the enlargement of the internal end of the vagina which is usually closed during vaginal hysterectomy. This study was done to see the outcome of vault closure versus non-closure in non-descent vaginal hysterectomy in non-prolapsed uterus. Methods: This prospective study was done in Obstetrics and Gynae Department, Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital during the period of July 2011 to December 2011. A total number of 50 patients with benign gynecological disorders without descent of uterus who admitted for hysterectomy were enrolled in this study. Among them, 25 patients had the vault close (group I) whereas 25 patients had an open vault(group11). Indication for hysterectomy, complications, blood transfusion, hospital stay (day) and histopathological findings were assessed for both groups. Statistical analyses of the results were obtained by using window based computer software devised with Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS-20). Results: Majority of the patients was found in the age group of 41-45 years in both groups, which was 12(48.0%) in Group I and 18(72.0%) patients in Group II. Blood transfusion was needed in 5(20.0%) and in 6(24.0%) in Group I and Group II respectively. Post operative complications after 15 days of follow-up, pelvic abscess was found 4.0% in Group I & not found in Group II. UTI was not found in Group I but 4.0% found in Group II. Conclusion: Outcomes were almost similar in both procedure. Ultimately the study did not show any significant difference between either group. Abstract:
Understanding how people’s worldviews and individual personality differences affect their thinking about anthropogenic climate change is critical to communication efforts regarding this issue. This study surveyed University of Georgia students to investigate the role that need for cognitive closure plays in level of climate change worry. The relationship between these two was found to involve suppression—a subset of mediation—by the social dimension of political conservatism. Political conservatism was also found to play a mediating role in the relationship between need for cognitive closure and support for governmental and personal climate solutions. However, social conservatism played this mediator role in women, and functioned as a suppressor for men. These findings help inform audience segmentation and creation of climate-related messages based on audience worldview and personality.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Several colleges were closed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is not clear if school closure has curbed the incidence of the infection. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the perception of adolescent college students on school reopening and associated factors. METHODOLOGY: This was a school-based cross-sectional study. A two-stage sampling technique was used to select five hundred adolescent college students from six secondary schools in the Enugu metropolis, Nigeria. Data were analysed with IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) statistical software version 25. RESULTS: The mean age of the students was 15.1±1.7 years and the majority, 56.4% were females. A higher proportion of the respondents, 78.0% were willing to return to school. For those not willing to return to school, the major reason was the preference for homestay until the pandemic is over, 57.3%. The majority of the students, 67.6% had their learning improved during the pandemic. More than half of the students, 65.0% had online classes during the pandemic. Predictors of willingness to return to school amidst the COVID-19 pandemic included being a male student, (AOR=0.304, 95%CI: 0.189-0.489), and being from a family of high socio-economic class, (AOR=0.363, 95%CI: 0.154- 0.855). CONCLUSION: Closure of schools should be revisited, with enforcement of all preventive measures. Alternative methods for education such as e-learning seem to create a divide between the rich and the poor. It is therefore pertinent to develop a bridging plan to fill the gap created by this divide.

Abstract:
Closure is a crucial factor in laparotomy wound. Fascial layers provide the major tensile strength in wound closure. Poor wound healing and development of wound infection in incisional wounds are the common complications of open abdominal surgery. Continuous fascial closure commonly practiced and the interrupted closures are also practiced by some surgeon with an assumption that it causes less pain and less wound infection. The aim of this study was to determine the rate of postoperative wound infection and severity of wound pain following interrupted and continuous abdominal wound closure. A comparative cross-sectional study was done at the Department of surgery, Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital from 1st July 2007 to 30th June 2008. A total 100 patients of clean-contaminated elective laparotomy were selected. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. Every odds number was included in group-I (interrupted suture) and every even number was included in group-II (continuous suture). Total 14% wound infection was detected in interrupted suture group where as wound infection was 18% in continuous suture group of wound closure. Though the wound infection is higher in group-II but the difference of wound infection is not statistically significant between two groups. The wound pain assessed in seven postoperative days was higher in continuous closure group than interrupted group but the difference was not significant. There is no significant difference of wound infection and wound pain between interrupted and continuous suture group in clean-contaminated laparotomy. A variety of stresses and life crises confront the novice medical student. The one stress which is often overlooked or underestimated is the experience with the cadaver. Often the trauma of this experience is not recognized. The Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine conducts a program designed to humanize the cadaver experience and provide an important form of closure to what many medical educators call the students' first encounter with death. Beginning with a carefully planned orientation and concluding with a memorial service for the deeded bodies, the program enables students to recognize and address their feelings, and provides a salient endpoint for the entire cadaver experience.

Objective To assess the frequency of surgical techniques at cesarean delivery (CD) among U.S. obstetricians. Methods Members of the American College of Obstetrician Gynecologists were randomly selected and e-mailed an online survey that assessed surgical closure techniques, demographics, and reasons. Data were analyzed using SPSS (IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States), descriptive statistics, and analysis of variance. Results Our response rate was 53%, and 247 surveys were analyzed. A similar number of respondents either “always or usually” versus “rarely or never” reapproximate the rectus muscles (38.4% versus 43.3%, p = 0.39), and close parietal peritoneum (42.5% versus 46.9%, p = 0.46). The most frequently used techniques were double-layer hysterotomy closure among women planning future children (73.3%) and suturing versus stapling skin (67.6%); the least frequent technique was closure of visceral peritoneum (12.2%). Surgeons who perform double-layer hysterotomy closure had fewer years in practice (15.0 versus 18.7 years, p = 0.021); surgeons who close visceral peritoneum were older (55.5 versus 46.4 years old, p < 0.001) and had more years in practice (23.8 versus 13.8 years practice; p < 0.001). Conclusion Similar numbers of obstetricians either reapproximate or leave open the rectus muscles and parietal peritoneum at CD, suggesting that wide variation in practice exists. Surgeon demographics and safety concerns play a role in some techniques.

PurposeThe paper investigates the closure mechanisms and strategies of exclusion concerning the establishment and subsequent functioning of the Collegio dei Rasonati, the professional body of accountants that was established in Venice in 1581 and operated until the end of the 18th century.Design/methodology/approachThe research design offers a critical longitudinal explanation of the emergence of the Collegio dei Rasonati as a professional body in the context of Venetian society by relying on the social closure theory elaborated by Collins (1975); Parkin (1979) and Murphy (1988).FindingseThe Collegio dei Rasonati was established to overcome the prerogatives of a social class in accessing the accounting profession. However, the pre-existing professional elites enacted a set of social closure strategies able to transform this professional body into a stronghold of their privileges.Research limitations/implicationsAs virtually all of the evidence concerning the admission examinations has been lost over time, the investigation is restricted to the study of the few examples that have survived. The main implication of the study concerns the understanding of some dynamics leading to neutralize attempts to replace class privileges with a meritocratic system.Originality/valueThe research investigates the structure of the rules of social closure revealing the possibility of an antagonistic relationship between different co-existing forms of exclusion within the same structure. Moreover, it highlights that a form of exclusion can be made of different hierarchical levels.

Abstract:
Abstract Loop closure detection is an indispensable part of the SLAM system, which can reduce the cumulative error of mobile robots in positioning and mapping. This paper proposes a supervised learning method, which combines the Siamese network and the VGG16 network in deep learning to handle loop closure detection. The Siamese network method and the traditional method are contrasted in the New College and City Centre data sets to prove the method’s usefulness in this research. The experiment’s findings reveal that the method of this paper ensures precision and recall rate while reducing the time necessary to assess similarities compared to the traditional method. It has a better chance of achieving real-time SLAM.

Abstract:
The Covid-19 impact was everywhere, which resulted in the closure of Schools and other educational institutions. Work life balance and stress are the main players in this situation, they are studied and analyzed precisely to understand the difficulties of the faculty members. When there is a imbalance in work-life balance, it will affect the satisfaction level of both personal and professional life, then it will cause low productivity and increase stress. Due to the pandemic, work from home method was implemented for many professions. By comparing IT sector work from home jobs, teaching profession has much difficulties. Educational institutions have the important responsibility to develop the nation by developing the students. Except educational sector other sectors have some period of time to operate their functions, but education sector should be sustainable in any situation to assure and secure the future of the nation. Initially, most governments have decided to temporarily close the educational institutions to reduce the impact of Covid-19. Later it was reopened, which increased the number of infection rates and then closed again. This study was conducted to analyze the impacts faced by the private college faculty members in Tiruchirappalli district after the pandemic surge. By conducting this study, 140 responses were collected and analyzed using F test statistical tool.

Abstract:
Background: Ventral hernias are the second most common type of hernias accounting for 21 to 35% of all types of hernias. Collagen is defined as an endogenous substance that forms an important structural component in connective tissue. Collagen granules have an advantage with a reduction in inflammatory cells during healing resulting in decreased days of healing. This study is to compare the outcome of a patient with and without collagen granules usage during ventral hernia open mesh repair. Methods: This prospective comparative study was done in 50 cases of ventral hernias admitted to the department of surgery in VMKV Medical College, Salem between periods of March 2018 to October 2019 were chosen for the study. The test group was treated with collagen granules and the control group was collagen granules not been used during ventral hernia mesh repair. Results: Most common surgical approach used in ventral hernia is open mesh repair. The study shows a group of patients where collagen granules are used after mesh fixation has faster wound healing, reduced seroma, and hematoma collection, and reduced hospital stay, reduced infection compared to the group of patients who undergone non-collagen closure. Conclusions: The study shows a group of patients where collagen granules are used after mesh fixation has faster wound healing, reduced seroma, and hematoma collection, and reduced hospital stay, reduced infection compared to the group of patients who underwent non-collagen closure.

Abstract:
Background: Exploratory laparotomy is a major surgical procedure. Midline laparotomy is the most common technique of opening the abdomen as it is simple, provides adequate exposure to all four quadrants, and affords quick exposure with minimal blood loss. Laparotomy wounds have been closed in various ways in terms of continuous versus interrupted closure, single layer versus mass closure, and absorbable versus non-absorbable sutures. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study was to find out the technique of rectus sheath closure in patients undergoing exploratory laparotomy that can reduce the burden of complications in post-operative period. Materials and Methods: It is a hospital-based prospective randomized observational study which was conducted in a rural-based tertiary care hospital and medical college with a time frame of about 1½ years. A total number of 74 patients of adult age group (21–70 yrs) admitted in general surgery ward of Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital, undergoing exploratory laparotomy. Results: Thirty-seven (50%) patients of midline laparotomy were closed in continuous technique. Rest 37 (50%) patients were closed in interrupted technique. The hospital stay was similar in both groups. There was no significant difference in incidence of wound infection (P=0.4687). Wound dehiscence and requirement of burst abdomen repair was significantly higher in continuous suture group as compared to interrupted suture group, but mean closure time (P<0.0001) and mean suture length (P=0.0436) were significantly higher in interrupted suture group. Conclusion: The major complication of emergency laparotomy is wound dehiscence which leads to increased morbidity and subsequent requirement of re-operation of burst abdomen and hospital cost. In our study, we found that interrupted suturing method of abdominal closure is better in respect to major post-operative complications though it requires more suture length and time.

Abstract:
Wound healing is a complex and dynamic process and is influenced by surgical technique. Optimal wound healing, with a minimal scar that compromises neither appearance nor function, is the desired result. This process is affected by both local and systemic factors. Many local conditions are readily controlled at the time of wound closure, and several fundamental principles of surgical wound closure exist that should be adhered to in the management. Skin is usually closed with sutures then later with skin staplers.Skin staplers are quick and easy to use, but an assistant is usually required to hold the skin edges accurately with forceps or skin hooks.Stapler's closure also causes considerably less damage to wound defenses than closure with least reactive non-absorbable suture. Standard suturing causes significantly more necrosis than stapling in myocutaneous flaps. We did this study to compare the time required for the closure of skin, infection rate, pain at the operated site with sutures and staplers in open inguinal hernia repair. 80 patients who were posted for elective open inguinal hernia surgery at Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute, porur, Chennai was included in this study. Time taken for closure of skin, infection rate and the pain was less in patients with stapler closure than with skin sutures

Abstract:
Over two million Americans receive treatment for pressure ulcers (PUs) annually, but national surgical outcomes are not well described. This study investigated rates and risk factors of postoperative complications in patients with PU. The 2011 and 2012 American College of Surgeons-National Surgical Quality Improvement Project database was queried and PU patients undergoing flap closure were identified. Descriptive statistics and multivariate regression analysis was used and reported as odds ratios (ORs) if ( P < 0.05). Of 1196 patients identified with a primary diagnosis of PU, 327 (27%) underwent flap closure. Emergency interventions were performed in seven patients who were excluded from analysis. Characteristics were average age 53.3 (±17); 65 per cent male; 41 per cent with grossly contaminated or infected wounds; 29 per cent frail; and 16 per cent with an American Society of Anesthesiologists score of four or five. Myocutaneous or fasciocutaneous flaps were performed in 82 per cent of patients, local skin rearrangements in 17 per cent, and free flap in one patient. Complications were low with 1.9 per cent recurrence and 4.7 per cent reoperation rates. Higher American Society of Anesthesiologists was independently associated with mortality (odds ratio = 6.6) and steroid use correlated with flap failure (odds ratio = 15). No differences in complication profiles were identified based on technique, frailty, or contamination. Surgical closure can be considered reasonable in all patients fit for anesthesia.

Abstract:
In 1871, Brinkley Female College in Memphis, Tennessee, closed due to a ghost story, regional interest in Spiritualism, and sensationalist journalism that harmed the short-lived academy. Spiritualism—a religio-spiritual movement punctuated by medium-guided communications between the living and deceased—was well-followed, though often contested during the nineteenth century. Spiritualism grew in popularity in the American South due to mass deaths resulting from yearly epidemics and the American Civil War. At the same time, sensationalist print media was widespread, and newspaper firms profited from unchecked accounts of Spiritualist seances and supernatural encounters. In the midst of this, higher education had expanded across the state of Tennessee. In the early years of Memphis-based women’s higher education, newspapers stoked interest in the paranormal by publishing unverified events attributed to a local women’s college. Sensationalist, penny-dreadful newspaper accounts influenced public perceptions, caused enrollment decline at Brinkley Female College, and resulted in institutional closure. As such, this case study recounts an unusual catalytic moment within the context of heightened Spiritualistic belief and uncouth journalistic practices. Ultimately, this study seeks to detail the influence of regional religious practices and sensational journalism on institutional termination.

Abstract:
Background: Skin closure in the abdominal surgeries is an important factor that affects the prognosis of wound in terms of hospital stay as well as overall outcome of the surgery. Objectives: Cesarean section being the commonly performed operation, choice of suture material has the unexceptional role on it. This study has been performed with an objective to look for the merits and demerits of the skin closure by suture (Silk 2-0) and stapler. Methods: Prospective comparative study conducted among the patients admitted in a Maternity Ward of Gandaki Medical College Teaching Hospital for elective and emergency cesarean section. The comparison has been made in terms of time taken during the skin closure, presence or absence of soakage and wound dehiscence, day of suture removal and pain during the suture removal. Results: The average time taken for skin closure for suture group was found to be 5.46 min (±0.97) and the same for stapler group was found to be 1.22 min (±0.15) respectively. Similarly, the mean day of stitch removal in suture and staples were found to be 6.94 (±1.75) and 7.95 (±1.89) respectively. Surgical site infection (SSI) i.e. soakage was present in eight percent of those in suture group and 20% in stapler group. Wound dehiscence was present in two percent among the suture group and five percent among the stapler group. The severity of pain is more in stapler group than that of suture group during its removal. Conclusions: Our study concluded suture being superior to staplers for skin closure during cesarean section. Though time taken for the closure is less in the stapler group, other factors like wound complications, duration of hospital stay, pain during its removal favored for the suture to be used.J-GMC-N | Volume 11 | Issue 01 | January-June 2018, Page: 1-4

Abstract:
Objectives. The aim of the paper is to explore the clinical efficacy and prognosis of the modified implantation of atrial septal defect (ASD) closure device to treat bronchopleural fistulas (BPFs). Methods. This paper has reviewed the results of 13 BPF patients implanted with a modified ASD closure device in Shaw Hospital Affiliated with the Medical College of Zhejiang University from October 2018 to November 2021. Anesthesia was selected based on the patient’s condition. Different sizes of ASD closures were selected based on the characteristics of fistulas. The modified implantation of the ASD closure device was applied to treat BPFs. The closure effects, closure time, and Borg score were observed at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks after the surgery. Results. All 13 BPF patients were successfully implanted with the ASD closure device, and the immediate clinical remission rate was 100%. Follow-up at 4 weeks after the surgery showed that 2 cases were automatically discharged within a few days and 4 cases had closed fistula at 1 day after the surgery; follow-up at 8 weeks after the surgery showed that 1 case with fistula closure was observed at 55 days after the surgery; follow-up at 12 weeks after the surgery showed that 1 case with fistula closure was observed at 82 days after the surgery. T/P values (T = 7.90, 5.99, 7.44, P < 0.05 ) of paired t-tests before surgery and 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks after the surgery were rated by the Borg scale. The data were statistically different, and the clinical symptoms improved significantly. As of publication, the follow-up at 12 weeks after the surgery showed that the clinical remission rate was 9/11, namely, 81.8%, 3 of 11 cases had relieved clinical symptoms but still needed continuous drainage, and 2 cases had fistula closure. The median time of thoracic extubation was 63 (3,120) days. No patients died from surgical complications or BPF recurrence during the prognosis and the follow-up period. Conclusions. The modified implantation method has a high success rate and clinical remission rate, quick and early fistula closure, and simple and noninvasive operation, without the need for a dedicated delivery sheath and rigid endoscopy. Moreover, it has accurate positioning, reliable closure efficiency, and prognosis, and can be completed under local anesthesia. This reduces the operation time, difficulty, and risks of anesthesia.

Abstract:
Although we all live in the present and often hear about the importance of living “here and now”, every moment of our lives is highly influenced by explicit and implicit thoughts about our past and potential future. The present study investigated the relation between individuals' tendencies to either drift towards the past by, e.g. constantly re-evaluating and regretting past choices, towards the future by, e.g. basing present actions on anticipated future consequences, and their inclination to deal with the present by either committing to chosen alternatives or procrastinating on their implementation. Finally, the influence of these factors on participants' satisfaction with their chosen college major was also explored. The obtained results indicate a close relationship between the assessed considerations of different temporal directions. Furthermore, regret, procrastination, commitment (choice closure), and consideration of future consequences (future focus) were revealed as statistically significant predictors of students' satisfaction with their college major. These findings indicate that individuals' considerations of various temporal directions influence their valuation of own choices and life outcomes and open new questions regarding the general relevance and effects of mental time travel.

Abstract:
AimsTo estimate the prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress among Sudanese medical students and investigate the relationship and impact of closure periods on depression.MethodsA cross-sectional analytical study was conducted. Data were collected from 1676 enrolled students from 10 medical schools in the capital of Sudan - Khartoum- who faced complete lockdown and agreed to participate in online google form. A self-administered questionnaire containing depression anxiety and stress scale (DASS-42) and socio-demographic inquires was used.ResultsThe chief responders were females 1158 (69.1%) while males were 518 (30.9%). The prevalence of stress symptoms was the highest (51.9%), followed by depression symptoms (49.8%) and anxiety symptoms (28.8%). 96 students attempted suicide (6%) and about 5 folds have suicidal ideation (27%). According to multiple binary logistic analyses, college closure time was significantly associated with decreasing chances of getting depression symptoms (OR: 0.39, 95% C.I: 0.21–0.70, p = 0.002), while being a female, COVID-19 patient or having a family history of depression appeared to elevate depression, anxiety and stress levels. The impact of university closure on stress and anxiety is non-significant.ConclusionDepression, stress, and to a lesser extent anxiety are widespread among Sudanese medical students and suicidal ideation is noteworthy. All of these require serious and expeditious interventions. Controversially, our findings suggest that university closure serves as a protective factor, relieving depression in medical students but not exaggerating it.

Results: Comparison of infection in stomasite skin wound closure done by purse string suture and linear suturing techniques was donewhich shows presence of infection in 36.67%(n=11) in Linear closure and 10%(n=3) in Pursestringclosure group while remaining 63.33% (n=19) and 90%(n=27) respectively case had noinfection, p value was calculated as 0.01 which shows a significant difference. Conclusions:The frequency of infection in stoma site skin wound closure done by purse-string suturingtechnique is significantly less than linear suturing technique.

Abstract:
A Prospective study of 30 cases of type III open fractures of tibia is conducted at Nepal Medical College, Kathmandu and Nobel Medical College, Biratnagar from 2009 to 2011. All cases included in the study were initially managed by wound debridement and external fixation, and followed-up regularly for 10 months for outcome. Five cases developed deep infection and 10 had superficial infection, which subsided with prolonged use of antibiotics. Union was obtained in 7to 8 months for 28 cases. Two cases resulted in non- union which had been managed by bone grafting. Open Type III fractures of tibia are still a difficult and challenging problem for orthopedic surgeons. Almost all cases are required for twice surgery including secondary closure, skin grafting and readjustment.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/jonmc.v1i2.7295 Journal of Nobel Medical College (2012), Vol.1 No.2 p.25-28

Abstract:
Background: The incidence of breast abscess ranges from 0.4 to 11% of all lactating mothers. Although breast abscess is a serious common complication of mastitis with high morbidity rate, there is a lack of high-quality randomized trial to demonstrate the best treatments. Methods: The Study was conducted in the Department of Surgery of Universal medical college and hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh and MH Samorita hospital and medical college. It was a randomized controlled trial to see the efficacy of primary closure following incision and drainage of lactational breast abscess over traditional open method. Total 120 population were randomly selected in group A (60 patients) and group B (60 patients) and data was collected with their signed ethical consent. The study was conducted from January 2014 to December 2019. Collected data were classified, edited, coded and entered into the computer for statistical analysis by using Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 22.Results: In patients of group A, most breast abscesses healed successfully with a nicer circumareolar scar, earlier healing, lesser number of hospital visits and lower total cost as compared to patients in group B. There was early resumption of breastfeeding and better patient satisfaction seen in group A.Conclusions: Primary closure of lactational breast abscess following incision and drainage is an effective modality of treatment of lactational breast abscess and it should be the first line of treatment, especially for larger and multilocular breast abscesses while traditional incision and drainage should be reserved for abscesses with gangrenous skin changes, where primary closure is not justified.

Abstract:
jdjdBackground & Objectives: Atrial Septal Defect is a common congenital heart disease and surgical closure is the treatment of choice in many cases. This article presents the diagnostic criteria, surgical technique and postoperative management of hundred consecutive patients operated by a single surgeon at single centre.Materials and methods: One hundred (100) patients having atrial septal defect (ASD) underwent surgery at Osmania General Hospital, OMC, Hyderabad between January 1990 and October 1998. Sixty eight percentages (68%) of the patients were females and 32% of the patients were male. Fifty nine percentages (59%) of patients were in the age group of 11-30 yrs. Majority of the patients (70%) were symptomatic and were in NYHA class II. 'O' Rh-positive blood group was found in 35% of patients. Associated cardiac lesions were present in 28% of cases. One case each of Cortriatrium, Lutembacher's syndrome and Holt-Oram syndrome were present in this series. Eighty nine percentages (89 %) were moderate sized defects repaired by direct closure where as rest of 11% needed patch repair. Cold crystalloid cardioplegia with moderate hypothermia (28°C) was employed in 83 cases, ventricular fibrillation at normothermia in 5 cases and normothermic warm blood cardioplegia with continuous perfusion of coronary arteries in 12 patients. Results: Total duration of cardiopulmonary bypass ranged from 21 minutes to 100 minutes (mean duration 54.4 minutes) and aortic cross clamp time ranged from 10 minutes to 68 minutes (mean duration 22.9 minutes). Blood transfusion requirement ranged from 1 unit to 10 units (mean 3.1 units). There was no hospital death. Postoperative complication rate was 15%.Conclusion: Atrial septal defect closure is a safe, simple and effective operation with excellent long term results.Journal of College of Medical Sciences-Nepal, Vol.11(4) 2015: 9-13

Abstract:
In this article, the authors argue that the lessons learned from the increasing closures of corporate li- braries that began in the 1980s can be applied to the wider library community. These closures have accelerated since the 1990s due to corporate cost cutting measures and the ever increasing availability of internet services that bypass the information professional. Above all, the authors argue that corporate librarians have often failed to align their services to the priorities of the companies they serve. This has resulted in their institutional marginalization and the eventual closure of the library. The authors make the case that, among other types of libraries, the sacrosanct place of the academic library at the center of the university is not guaranteed. The information era with its vast digital resources has and will under- mine the physical assets of traditional libraries as well as the customary role of librarians who staff them. Academic librarians will increasingly be expected to show administrators that their services are aligned to their institution’s strategic priorities and that their libraries are providing added value to its customers, namely, the students, faculty and staff of their college or university. If they do not do so, they very well may face, in the not so distant future, what may now seem unimaginable –the reduction or closure of the academic library in favor of customer-accessed digital information services.
