Introduction: Previous research has projected future shortages in radiation oncologistsin Australia. Anecdotal evidence also suggests a similar pattern in New Zealand, howevershortages in the radiology workforce have not been forecast to date. The present study aimed to examine the trends in applications for radiation oncology and radiology positions in New Zealand.Methods: Data were collected on vocational training applicants and senior medical officer (SMO, consultant) positions from 2009 to 2016. Data were obtained from publicly-available data on the New Zealand Ministry of Health and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) websites.Results: Compared with radiation oncology, applications to radiology significantly outnumbered the available positions—a trend that escalated between 2009 and 2016. In addition, the radiation oncology SMO workforce in New Zealand attracted progressively fewer local graduates (i.e., more international medical graduates) compared with radiology over the period studied.Conclusions: This is the first study to shed light on trends in applications to the two specialties overseen by RANZCR in New Zealand. Future efforts should focus on attracting more trainees to radiation oncology and addressing factors underlying the apparent discrepancies between the two specialties, as well as the mental health and wellbeing of trainees.

Limited water resources exist in numerous remote indigenous settlements around Australia. Indigenous people in these communities are still living in rudimentary conditions while their urban counterparts have full amenities, large scale water supplies and behavioral practices which may not be appropriate for an arid continent but are supported by extensive infrastructure in higher rainfall coastal areas. As remote indigenous communities continue to develop, their water use will increase, and in some cases, costly solutions may have to be implemented to augment supplies. Water harvesting techniques have been applied in settlements on a small scale for domestic and municipal purposes, and in the large, broadacre farm setting for productive use of the water. The techniques discussed include swales, infiltration basins, infiltration trenches and “sand dam” basins. This paper reviews the applications of water harvesting relevant to small communities for land rehabilitation, landscaping and flood control. Landscaping is important in these communities as it provides shelter from the sun and wind, reduces soil erosion and hence reduced airborne dust, and in some cases provides food and nutrition. Case studies of water harvesting systems applied in the Pilbara Region, Western Australia for landscaping around single dwellings in Jigalong and Cheeditha, in a permaculture garden in Wittenoon and at a college and carpark in Karratha are described.

Abstract:
3D virtual management is a topic of growing interest. The AEC industry is undergoing a real revolution because of the technological changes that are taking place. Synchronized 3D visualization is one of the tools being deployed at an accelerated pace. This, together with collaborative work, contributes to optimal management for all stakeholders. The integration of geographic information systems and building information modeling and heritage BIM is one of the most innovative concepts; it enables the generation of collaborative, fluid systems. The objective of this research is to identify the most significant technological developments and potential applications of the aforementioned integration. For this purpose, after a bibliographic consultation (26,245 sources), two analyses are carried out (from the screening of 179 sources), one quantitative (bibliometric) and the other qualitative (focused on five key concepts). The results show that regarding the integration of GIS with BIM and HBIM, the highest concentration of contributions is in engineering with 30.66%, followed by computer science with 21.01%. The country with the highest number of citations is China with 717, followed by Australia and the USA with 549 and 513, respectively, but relativizing the number of citations based on various indices (human development index, gross national income per capita, and population-tertiary education level), Hong Kong (18.04), Australia (10.64), and Egypt (10.16) would take the top positions, respectively. Regarding universities, the entity that has generated the most references is Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands) with 15 papers, followed by University College London (UK) with 13. Finally, the results show that GIS and BIM and HBIM provide virtual 3D models with multiple applications for buildings and infrastructures.

Abstract:
The accurate prediction of axial capacity remains a challenging task for piles driven in sands. Rigorous database studies have become key tools for assessing the efficacy of design methods. This paper employs the 117 high-quality entries in the recently developed Zhejiang University – Imperial College London (ZJU–ICL) database to check for potential biases between nine prediction procedures, considering a range of factors. The analysis highlights the critical importance of addressing age after driving, open and closed ends, tension versus compression, and concrete compared to steel. It also shows the hierarchy of reliability parameters associated with the alternative approaches. The “full” Imperial College pile (ICP) approach and The University of Western Australia (UWA) approaches are found to have significant advantages in eliminating potential biases. It is also argued that design load and resistance or safety factors should be varied to match the design and site investigation methods applied, as well as the loading uncertainty and degree of load cycling, which often vary between applications. Noting that predictions for base capacities Qb are inherently less reliable than for shaft Qs, especially in rapidly varying ground profiles, credible lower bound parameters (cone resistance, qc) are recommended for Qb assessment. It is also recommended that the potential effects of cycling be addressed carefully in cases that involve substantial environmental loading.

<div>The 13th International Symposium on Solubility Phenomena and Related Equilibrium Processes (ISSP-13) was held at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, 27-31 July 2008. The symposium was sponsored by IUPAC, and arrangements were carried out by Trinity College, Dublin and University College, Dublin.<br /><br />About 80 delegates attended the symposium from 27 different countries. The meeting comprised 8 invited speakers, 30 oral presentations, and 21 poster presentations.<br /><br />The ISSP was first organized in 1984, is held in even-numbered years, and was an outcrop of the solubility data project where a team of experts provides critical compilations of solubility data of importance in various technologies.</a> <br /><br />Each symposium has a well-defined focus which incorporates experimental methods, data analysis, modeling, and predictive methods and general applications of solubility phenomena.<br /><br />Previous symposia have focused on several themes related to solubility. In assessing overseas-trained general practitioners (GPs) applying for specialist recognition in Australia, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) sets a minimum requirement of 2 days per week ‘undertaking general practice activities’ over the 3 years prior to application. The RACGP does not consider academic practice (i.e. relevant teaching and research) to be a ‘general practice activity’, thereby blocking overseas-trained full-time academic GPs from specialist recognition in Australia. The actions of the RACGP have implications for access to quality primary health care in Australia.

Don Weiss was born in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda on 4 October 1924 and died in Melbourne on 30 July 2008. He was educated in South Australia, at Scotch College, the South Australian School of Mines and Industry, and the University of Adelaide. He joined the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1948 and worked for CSIR and its successor organization, CSIRO, until his retirement in 1984. He was the Chief of the CSIRO Division of Chemical Technology from 1974 to 1979 and Director of CSIRO's Planning and Evaluation Advisory Unit from 1979 to 1984. He was a highly imaginative and creative scientist whose work was always driven by his clear understanding of its application. He made important contributions to separation science but is best known for his contributions to technology for water and waste water treatment. His enduring legacy is the more than twenty MIEX plants that have been installed around the world.

Objective: To provide practical clinical guidance for the treatment of adults with panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and generalised anxiety disorder in Australia and New Zealand. Method: Relevant systematic reviews and meta-analyses of clinical trials were identified by searching PsycINFO, Medline, Embase and Cochrane databases. Additional relevant studies were identified from reference lists of identified articles, grey literature and literature known to the working group. Evidence-based and consensus-based recommendations were formulated by synthesising the evidence from efficacy studies, considering effectiveness in routine practice, accessibility and availability of treatment options in Australia and New Zealand, fidelity, acceptability to patients, safety and costs. The draft guidelines were reviewed by expert and clinical advisors, key stakeholders, professional bodies, and specialist groups with interest and expertise in anxiety disorders. Results: The guidelines recommend a pragmatic approach beginning with psychoeducation and advice on lifestyle factors, followed by initial treatment selected in collaboration with the patient from evidence-based options, taking into account symptom severity, patient preference, accessibility and cost. Recommended initial treatment options for all three anxiety disorders are cognitive–behavioural therapy (face-to-face or delivered by computer, tablet or smartphone application), pharmacotherapy (a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor together with advice about graded exposure to anxiety triggers), or the combination of cognitive–behavioural therapy and pharmacotherapy. Conclusion: The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and generalised anxiety disorder provide up-to-date guidance and advice on the management of these disorders for use by health professionals in Australia and New Zealand.

Alphacrucis College, Australia, has developed a Clinical Teaching Model (CTM) as an option within the initial teacher-training awards. The Alphacrucis College model intentionally combines the pre-service teachers’ spiritual formation with their professional development. This article reports on an evaluation of the CTM students’ experience compared with that of students under the traditional approach. The key findings confirm an increased sense of self-discipline and confidence, and an overwhelming appreciation for the practical application without assessment. The students appreciated that in the CTM process, faith was being coupled with their calling to teach.

Of the first 2000 incidents reported to the Australian Incident Monitoring Study, 177 (9%) were due to “pure” equipment failure according to pre-defined criteria. Of these 107 (60%) involved anaesthetic equipment, 42 (24%) involved monitors, 17 (10%) other theatre equipment and 11 (6%) the gas or electricity supply. Ninety-seven (55% of the 177) were potentially life-threatening; of these two-thirds would be detected by the array of monitors recommended by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and all but 9 of the remainder would be handled by application of the crisis management algorithm recommended elsewhere in this symposium. Of the 9 remaining, 2 were electrical shock, 3 overheating of a humidifier or blood warmer, 2 the unavailability of a spare laryngoscope and 1 the consequence of a power failure. Meticulous adherence to the equipment checking and monitoring guidelines of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and application of a suitable crisis management algorithm should protect the patient from potentially life-threatening equipment failure in virtually all cases except electric shock, power failure and overheating of warming devices.

Abstract The scientific interest of exercise medicine for the treatment of cancer is ever expanding. Recently published and updated guidelines for exercise training in cancer patients by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) or the Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) are leading the way towards an individualized approach for exercise prescription. These guidelines provide physicians and therapists with a comprehensive and detailed overview about the beneficial effects of exercise training and, more so, summarize the evidence on potential dose–response mechanisms, including pathways of exercise-induced stimuli to counteract tumour microenvironmental pathologies. However, the most optimal types and doses of exercise training across the cancer disease and treatment continuum are yet to be determined. Therefore, the purpose of this narrative review was to illustrate the current implications but also limitations of exercise training during the different stages of cancer therapy, as well as to discuss necessary future directions. As a second purpose, special attention will be given to the current role of exercise in the treatment of cancer in Germany.

Background: Missense variants in the MYH7 -encoded MYH7 (beta myosin heavy chain 7) represent a leading cause of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). MYH7 -specific American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) variant classification guidelines were released recently but have yet to be assessed independently. We set out to assess the performance of the MYH7 -specific ACMG guidelines and determine if the addition of phenotype-enhanced criteria (PE-ACMG) using the HCM Genotype Predictor Score can further reduce the burden of variants of uncertain significance (VUS). Methods: Re-assessment was performed on 70 MYH7 -variants in 121 unique patients from Mayo Clinic, and an independent cohort of 54 variants in 70 patients from Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (Australia). Qualifying variants were re-adjudicated using both standard ACMG and MYH7 -ACMG guidelines, and HCM Genotype Predictor Score was used to provide a validated measure of strength of clinical phenotype to be incorporated into the MYH7 -ACMG framework. Results: Among Mayo Clinic identified variants, 11/70 (16%) were classified as pathogenic (P), 10/70 (14%) as likely pathogenic, and 49/70 (70%) as a VUS. A similar distribution was seen in the Australian patients (12/54 [22%] P, 12/54 [22%] likely pathogenic, and 30/54 [56%] VUS; P =not significant). Application of the MYH7 -ACMG resulted in a nonsignificant reduction of the VUS burden in both cohorts from 49/70 to 39/70 (56%; P =0.1; Mayo Clinic) and from 30/54 to 20/54 (37%; P =0.1; Australia). Using the combined PE-MYH7-ACMG framework, the VUS decreased significantly from 49 to 27 ( P <0.001, Mayo Clinic) and from 30 to 16 ( P <0.001; Australia). Conclusions: Use of the MYH7 -specific guidelines alone failed to significantly decrease VUS burden in 2 independent cohorts. However, a significant reduction in VUS burden was observed after the addition of phenotypic criteria. Using a patient’s strength of sarcomeric HCM phenotype for variant adjudication can increase significantly the clinical utility of genetic testing for patients with HCM.

Pot experiment is carried out at the greenhouse belongs to the college of Education-university of Al-Anbar during Winter season 2013/2014 to investigate the effect of application of different levels of bat guano (0, 4 and 8gm) on some yield traits for two bread wheat Triticum aestivum L. Cvs, one is local cv. (Aliz) another one is imported from Australia (Eratom). The experimental treatments are distributed according factorial experiment arrangement using completely randomized blocks with three replicates. Some traits are measured as spikes no per plant, spike length, spike weight, grains nos. per spike and grains weight per pot. Results reveal that bat guano application of 8gm is significantly superior in the average of. It thus could be concluded that the application of bat guano at 8gm alone is the better than 4gm in some traits. However, the genetic affinity of local cv is dominated with 4gm application and of imported cv is to 8gm application. Therefore, it could be recommended to test the application of bat guano on the two cultivars across field environment

Welcome to the final issue for the Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice for 2018. In this issue, we have papers from Australia, the US, and Ireland, covering topics related to information and academic literacy, self-efficacy, the flipped classroom, student engagement and their perceptions of group work. Of the first two papers related to information and academic literacy, Hostetler, Luo and Stefaniak present findings from a systematic literature review exploring approaches to the assessment of students’ metacognition and its potential application in library and information science. Conducted in response to changes in an information literacy competencies framework prepared by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) in the US, the authors advocate for the incorporation of metacognitive tools, including self-reflection and self-assessment, in the assessment strategies of libraries to encourage higher order thinking.

This pilot survey examined the views of a sample of health service managers (HSMs) and health information managers (HIMs) undertaking tertiary studies about the application of information technology (IT) in health care. The survey was based on a questionnaire designed as part of a 1994 study of health service executives (HSEs) commissioned by the Australian College of Health Service Executives (ACHSE). We examined views about current and future IT expenditure, satisfaction with IT, impact of IT on quality and efficiency and the future use of electronic medical records and optical disk storage. Results identify differences and some similarities between respondent groups on these issues. The paper explores these differences and similarities and provides insight into the views held by future HSMs and HIMs.

Abstract:
Australian scientist Shirley Jeffrey was a pioneer in oceanographic research, identifying the thentheoretical chlorophyll c, and was a worldwide leader in the application of pigment methods in quantifying phytoplankton as the foundation of the oceanic food supply. Her research paved the way for the successful application of microalgae in aquaculture around the world. Jeffrey earned bachelor's and master's degrees at University of Sydney, majoring in microbiology and biochemistry, followed by a PhD from the King's College London Hospital Medical School. Returning to Sydney, she was hired by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) to research chlorophyll c. Following this successful effort, she became a research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley from 1962 to 1964. She then became affiliated with the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research. After a 1973 sabbatical at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, she returned to CSIRO, where she spent the rest of her career.

Abstract:
This account of the development and achievements of the animal sciences in Australia is prefaced by a brief history of the livestock industries from 1788 to the present. During the 19th century, progress in industry development was due more to the experience and ingenuity of producers than to the application of scientific principles; the end of the century also saw the establishment of departments of agriculture and agricultural colleges in all Australian colonies (later states). Between the two world wars, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research was established, including well supported Divisions of Animal Nutrition and Animal Health, and there was significant growth in research and extension capability in the state departments. However, the research capacity of the recently established university Faculties of Agriculture and Veterinary Science was limited by lack of funding and opportunity to offer postgraduate research training. The three decades after 1945 were marked by strong political support for agricultural research, development and extension, visionary scientific leadership, and major growth in research institutions and achievements, partly driven by increased university funding and enrolment of postgraduate students. State-supported extension services for livestock producers peaked during the 1970s. The final decades of the 20th century featured uncertain commodity markets and changing public attitudes to livestock production. There were also important Federal Government initiatives to stabilise industry and government funding of agricultural research, development and extension via the Research and Development Corporations, and to promote efficient use of these resources through creation of the Cooperative Research Centres program. These initiatives led to some outstanding research outcomes for most of the livestock sectors, which continued during the early decades of the 21st century, including the advent of genomic selection for genetic improvement of production and health traits, and greatly increased attention to public interest issues, particularly animal welfare and environmental protection. The new century has also seen development and application of the ‘One Health’ concept to protect livestock, humans and the environment from exotic infectious diseases, and an accelerating trend towards privatisation of extension services. Finally, industry challenges and opportunities are briefly discussed, emphasising those amenable to research, development and extension solutions.

Of the first 2000 incidents reported to the Australian Incident Monitoring Study, 1256 occurred in relation to general anaesthesia and 81 of the latter were first detected by blood pressure (BP) monitoring. A further 25 incidents not associated with general anaesthesia were first detected by blood pressure monitoring, giving a total of 106. In the monitor detection of incidents in relation to general anaesthesia, BP monitoring ranked fourth after oximetry, capnography and low pressure alarms. On the other hand, 38 incidents in which the problem was primarily one of significant change in BP were first detected by means other than the BP monitor (20 clinically, 12 by pulse oximetry and 6 by ECG). Early detection rates of hypotension were 60% for invasive methods, 40% for automated non-invasive (NIBP) devices and 30% for manual sphygmomanometry. There were 21 reports of BP monitor “failure”; the 11 of these which occurred with NIBPs involved unexplained false “low” or “high” readings and failure to detect profound hypotension, and led to considerable morbidity and at least one death. The 10 cases of invasive monitoring failure were predominantly due to mains power loss, hardware breakage or operator error. In a theoretical analysis of the 1256 GA incidents, it was considered that on its own, BP monitoring would have detected 919 (73%), but in the vast majority, by the time this detection has occurred, potential organ damage could not be excluded. It is recommended that BP be measured at regular intervals dictated by clinical requirements (usually at least every five minutes). BP monitoring should be supplemented by other modalities in accordance with the College of Anaesthetists guidelines and when immediate and reliable detection of change in BP is critical, invasive monitoring should be used.

Fellowships are competitive training posts, often in a subspecialty area. We performed a quality assessment of potential interviewer bias on anaesthesia Fellow selection. After research locality approval, we analysed interview scores for all Fellowship applications to our department over six years. Panel interviewers participated in a structured interview process, asking a series of standardised questions to rate applicants. A mixed model analysis of total applicant rating with crossed effects of applicants and interviewers was used. A total of 94 applicants were interviewed by 27 panel members, with between two and four panel members per interview, giving a total of 329 applicant ratings. The random effect of applicants accounted for 45.8% of total variance in ratings (95% confidence intervals (CI) for intraclass correlation (ICC) 35.8%–57.2%) while interviewer effects accounted for 13.4% of total variance (95% CI for ICC 5.3%–30.0%). We found no evidence of bias for most potential sources after analysing multiple applicant and interviewer factors. After adjusting for interviewer training programme, applicants from other training programmes were rated a mean of 1.87 points lower than Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) applicants (95% CI 0.62–3.12, P = 0.003) and 1.84 points lower than Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) applicants (95% CI 0.37–3.32, P = 0.014). After adjusting for applicant gender, female clinicians rated applicants 1.12 points higher (95% CI 0.19–2.06, P = 0.019) on average than male clinicians. The observed differences in interview scores amongst male and female clinicians and lower scores in applicants from programmes other than ANZCA/RCoA were small, and require confirmation in independent studies.

AbstractWorkers in outdoor occupations routinely face unavoidable exposure to the sun's ultra violet rays with attendant risk of skin cancer, and this study evaluated a multi-faceted education program aimed at improving the solar protection practices of Australian Technical College Surveying students performing outdoor field exercises. One hundred and fifteen students were randomly assigned (by class) to either a Control or Treatment group, and given slides, information sheets, and a guest talk by a young woman who had recovered from life-threatening skin cancer, with a baseline and two follow-up assessments being made on field days using a behavioural diary. A greater proportion of students receiving the solar education increased sunscreen cream application and hat use compared with Control participants, and a composite index of solar protection favoured the Treatment group. Moreover, Control participants significantly changed some solar protection behaviours, possibly through modelling the Treatment group, and Treatment participants showed significantly higher rates of particular sun protection behaviours at the second post test occasion than at the first post test occasion.

Objective: To describe a two-phase study of the structure of Australasian psychiatrist peer review groups. Method (Phase one): Initially, information was sought from chairskoordinators of psychiatrist peer review groups regarding the nature and organisation of their group. Results (Phase one): One hundred and three questionnaires were returned describing a number of models of peer review. Three principal models were identified: a teaching hospital model, a private practice model, and a private institution model. Method (Phase two): The second-phase questionnaire sought information on the quality of the review, using six proposed standards developed by the Quality Assurance Committee of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. Results (Phase two): Many groups indicated that four of the proposed standards (those relating to documentation, having clear goals, reviewing actual clinical cases, and rigorous protection of confidentiality) were either already being followed or would be relatively easy to implement. The remaining two proposed standards (including structure, process and outcome dimensions of health care in the case discussion, and the use of explicit criteria) presented more difficulty. Conclusion: The application of such standards to peer review group meetings should assist groups to provide a forum for presentation and evaluation of clinical work where participants know they will be challenged in an environment which is both supportive and educational.

Abstract Road Safety Audit (RSA) is a formal procedure for assessing accident potential and safety performance of new and existing roads. Road safety audit is an efficient, cost effective and proactive approach to improve road safety. It is proved that RSA has the potential to save lives. The RSA was originated in Great Britain and is well developed in countries like UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Canada, Malaysia and Singapore. Presently, it is at varying stages of implementation in developing nations like India, South Africa, Thailand and Bangladesh. Therefore, road safety audit appears to be an ideal tool for improving road safety in India. In this study, a rural road stretching from Rallaguda bridge to Vardhaman College of Engineering in Hyderabad city is chosen for road safety audit. Safety assessment is done using iRAP application by collecting road side features, midblock details, intersection features, vulnerable road users’ facilities, speed and flow details. The secondary objective is to find out the Black Spot locations within Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) police station jurisdiction of Hyderabad city. Accident prone areas are identified by estimating Weighted severity and accident severity indices with the help of historical accident data. Finally, major causes of accidents and measures to improve safety of the chosen road section are suggested.

Background: Instrumental vaginal deliveries (IVDs) account for approximately 11% of births in Australia. Complications resulting from IVD can occasionally be the subject of litigation. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists suggests a standardised pro forma in their guidelines as an aid to accurate and complete IVD documentation. Many units, including ours, use less structured reporting, which is probably also less adequate. Aim: To assess whether the introduction of a dedicated IVD form improves the quality of IVD documentation. Method: Analysis of the quality of IVD documentation before and after the implementation of a new dedicated IVD form. A survey to evaluate clinicians’ opinion on the new standardised form. Results: Significant improvement was found in documentation of key information including the documentation of caput ( p < 0.05), type of instrument, number of ventouse cup detachments, moulding of specific sutures, abdominal palpation (number of fifths of foetal head palpable), liquor colour and total time of instrument application ( p < 0.001). A majority of clinicians believed the form to be beneficial in terms of completeness and that it reduced the amount of time required for documentation. Conclusions: IVD documentation is enhanced by the use of a dedicated form. Clinical judgement may also be enhanced by the discipline involved in the formal assessment required by the form.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to describe the educational philosophy and practice underpinning the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA) program and how it is aligned with the needs of the Australian and New Zealand health care systems. Preparing future doctors as medical leaders requires keeping pace with developments in medical education and increased sophistication on the part of teaching and supervising faculty. Design/methodology/approach – This paper is a descriptive case study. The data are complemented by workforce data and excerpts from the RACMA Management and Leadership Curriculum. Findings – The RACMA has developed a program informed by current best practices in medical education. The educational underpinnings and instructional practices of the RACMA emphasize leadership as a collaborative social process and the importance of relational leadership in successful modern day practice. The ongoing development of the program has a focus on setting of clear learning objectives, regular and continuous feedback to trainees and reflective practice facilitated by the close relationship between trainees and their preceptor. Research limitations/implications – Although a site-specific case study, the application of relational models of teaching can be applied in other settings. Practical implications – The application of relational models of teaching can be applied in other settings. Social implications – This paper fulfils a social need to describe successful competency models used for medical leadership development. Originality/value – This paper fulfils an identified need to define competency models used as a foundation for medical leadership development.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate and explore the degree of success of the implementation of online learning in conventional higher education institutions instead of face-to-face learning during the spread of the Covid-19 Pandemic during the 2019/2020 academic year, via exploring the undergraduate students' perceptions of the application of the online learning system at Ajman University in UAE, and Griffith University in Australia. In the study, the descriptive approach was used. A questionnaire consisting of 40 items was designed and distributed to 630 students from Ajman University and 675 students from Griffith University, who were randomly selected from different faculties of the two universities during the 2019/2020 academic year during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of the study revealed that students' a moderate satisfaction with the University's readiness, training, and technical support for online learning and the university's teaching and learning process during the COVID-19 pandemic, with female students finding them more satisfaction than male students. Disciplines and computer skills also showed an impact on such satisfaction, with Pharmacy & Health Science College students at Ajman University and Architecture, Art, and Design discipline students at Griffith University, and those with excellent computer skills in both Universities. In addition, the results showed positive attitudes of students towards the use of online learning at the two universities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ricardo Miledi (16.09.1927-18.12.2017) is an outstanding neurophysiologist and biophysicist who made a great contribution to the study of synaptic transmission functions. He proved the key role of сalcium ions in the release of neuromediators, developed methods of receptor expression and membrane fragments integration into large oocytes that provided huge possibilities for thousands of researchers to study subtle mechanisms of transmembrane proteins function in norm and pathology. Ricardo Miledi received his MD degree in the National Autonomous University of Mexico and in 1954 he defensed his dissertation on the study of electrical nature of cardiac fibrillation in the National Institute of Cardiology (Mexico). In 1956-1958 he underwent training in Canberra Health Research Institute (Australia) in the laboratory headed by John Eccles (Nobel Prize 1963). In 1958 R. Miledi was invited to the Department of biophysics of University College London where in cooperation with Bernard Katz (Nobel Prize 1970) made a number of important discoveries in the analysis of acetylcholine receptor expression in denervated mucle; determination of the role of calcium in neuromediators release; analysis of membrane noise on neuromediator application to neuromuscular synapses; study of the effect of antibodies from patients with myasthenia gravis on neuromuscular transmission. In the early 1980s Ricardo Miledi implemented the method of functional expression in Xenopus frog oocytes of receptors and ion channels from messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA). His heritage running the gamut is presented in more than 500 articles.

Purpose – It is widely acknowledged that the computer has caused great societal changes over recent years, but the purpose of this paper is to relate specifically to those due to the use of computers in education and teaching about computing. The adoption and use of computers in education was very much a socio-technical process with influence from people, organisations, processes and technologies: of a variety of human and non-human actors. Design/methodology/approach – This paper makes use of actor-network theory to analyse these events and their educational and societal impact. Data were collected from published sources, interviews with those involved at the time, discussions and from personal experience and observations. Findings – Computers have, of course, had a huge impact on society, but particularly in relation to the use of computers in school education there was a different societal impact. Some of this related directly to education, some to school administration and some to student attitudes, experiences and knowledge. Research limitations/implications – The paper investigates the development of early courses in computing in universities and schools in Victoria, Australia. The paper does not, however, consider the use of computers in university research, only in education. Practical implications – The paper describes the significant educational events of the era from punch-card tabulating machines in the 1930s to micro-computers in the late 1980s, and investigates the relationship between the development of courses in the Universities and those in the more vocationally oriented Colleges of Advanced Education. It examines whether one followed from the other. It also investigates the extent of the influence of the universities and CAEs on school computing. Social implications – The advent of the computer made a significant impact on university and school education even before the internet, Google, Wikipedia and smart phones in the late 1990s and 2000s. Computers in schools cause a rethink of how teaching should be handled and of the role of the teacher. Originality/value – This paper investigates the history of computers and education in both universities and schools in Victoria, Australia over the period from the 1930s to the early 1990s. It considers how and why this technological adoption occurred, and the nature of the resulting educational and societal change this produced. Primary and High School use of computers did not commence until the 1970s but prior to this there is a considerable and interesting history associated with the development of Higher Education courses relating to computing.

Turret-moored floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels have found application in several offshore oil and gas fields in Australia’s North West Shelf (NWS). These vessels are either custom-built or converted tankers, with an internal or external turret. The position of an internal turret is decided based on a number of design considerations, primarily, available deck and interior space, and weathervaning capabilities. It is known that turret position can influence vertical motions and accelerations of a vessel, but this factor has not been given much importance, in comparison with the effects on the horizontal plane motions, primarily surge. This paper presents the results of a pilot study conducted at the Australian Maritime College, Tasmania, to study the vertical motions of a single-point moored FPSO model in waves, while systematically varying the mooring position across the length of the model. The displacement of the vessel was held constant at 50-percent-loaded condition. A single-point mooring system was designed and implemented on the model to simulate the prototype turret mooring system. Results show that the mooring location significantly affects the vertical motions and accelerations of the vessel. Astern turrets were found to produce higher heave and pitch than other locations tested. Although turrets positioned close to the longitudinal center of gravity produced the lowest overall motions, it is suggested that turret position forward of midships be preferred, as it provides a balance between lowering vertical motions and improving weathervaning characteristics.

Introduction. Historically, the use of videoconference technologies in emergency medicine training has been limited. Whilst there are anecdotal reports of the use of teletraining for emergency medicine by rural doctors in Australia, minimal evidence exists in the literature. This paper aimed to explore the use of teletraining in the context of managing emergency presentations in rural hospitals. Methods. Using a qualitative approach, a mixture of junior and senior doctors were invited to participate in semistructured interviews. Data were transcribed and analysed line by line. Applying the grounded theory principles of open and axial coding, themes and subthemes were generated. Results. A total of 20 interviews were conducted with rural doctors, rural doctors who are medical educators, and emergency medicine specialists. Two major themes—(1) teletraining as education and (2) personal considerations—and ten subthemes were evident from the data. Most participants had some previous experience with teletraining. Access to peer teaching over videoconference was requested by rural generalist registrars. There was a preference for interactive training sessions, over didactic lectures with little mention of technical barriers to engagement. The ability of teletraining to reduce professional isolation was a major benefit for doctors practicing in remote locations. Discussion. For these rural doctors, teletraining is a feasible method of education delivery. Wider application of teletraining such as its use in peer teaching needs to be explored. The benefits of teletraining suggest that teletraining models need to be core business for health services and training providers, including specialist colleges.

In this paper we describe our experiences with film copies of original astronomical photographs taken with the 1.2-meter U.K. Schmidt Telescope (UKST) in Australia, and used as teaching material in the Department of Astronomy of the University of Edinburgh. Two packages are intended for undergraduate use; the Education Packages are designed as visual aids for colleges, schools, and amateur groups.The original purpose of the telescope (which was commissioned in 1973) was to carry out a Southern Sky Survey to match the Northern Survey done by the Palomar 48” Schmidt Telescope. The telescope has a very wide field — 6.5 × 6.5 degrees, or equivalent to over a hundred and fifty full moons, and the photographs reach objects of 23rd magnitude: they record stars like the Sun to the very edges of the Galaxy and galaxies to a thousand million light years. Each photograph has an area of 356 × 356 mm and records between 100,000 and 1 million stars and galaxies. The survey photographs are the deepest available maps of the sky and are indispensable tools for astronomers in searches for unusual objects, for investigation of the distribution of galaxies and many other tasks. The UKST is equipped with objective prisms that are capable of producing low dispersion spectra of stars and galaxies. A prism of very small angle is placed in front of the aperture of the telescope so that each individual image is drawn out into a tiny spectrum on the photograph. The dispersion is very small, only a few millimeters from the red to the ultraviolet, but the dominant features in the spectra are recognizable and have many applications.
