Abstract:
The collective work is devoted to the multidimensional issue of reflection of Leo Tolstoy’s spiritual and moral views in his works. The authors reveal a deep connection between the writer’s spiritual movement (mainly in the 1860–1870s — the time of creating great novels “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina”) and the creative history, poetics and problematics of his works. The originality of Tolstoy’s moral concepts, the peculiarities of their relation to the national spiritual tradition, as well as to the contemporary ideological movements, are examined. The book is basically an analytical interpretation of findings and discoveries of a team of specialists engaged in the preparation of the Complete Works by Leo Tolstoy in 100 volumes, which is carried out at IWL RAS.

Abstract:
Preparing large ensembles for performance involves musical, social, logistical and financial challenges of a kind seldom encountered in other forms of collective music-making. The conventional approach to meeting the challenges that arise during rehearsal is to appoint a single musical overseer, usually a conductor, whose ostensible role in musical preparation is to directly influence the musicians while working towards the creation of a musical product to be delivered in later performances. Rehearsal leadership, viewed from this perspective, moves predominantly in one direction, from conductor to ensemble. But such a perspective oversimplifies the conductor’s relationship with the ensemble, the relationships between the musicians, and the strategies that the latter must employ when working in large ensembles. Conceptualizing the ensemble as a complex system of interrelated components, where leadership and creative agency are distributed and developed through rehearsal to achieve what audiences assume to be a unified whole, yields new understanding of the work of large ensembles. This chapter examines these components of the creative process in orchestral and choral rehearsal and performance, the internal and external forces shaping and constraining that process, and the approaches that individual musicians and conductors could adopt in response to the changing contexts in which such creativity might be manifested.

Hagberg, Garry L. Ensemble Improvisation, Collective Intention, and Group Attention. Edited by George E. Lewis and Benjamin Piekut. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195370935.013.011.

Abstract:
Jazz improvisation offers raw material of considerable value for issues in the philosophy of mind, but this material remains insufficiently investigated. Collective intention and distributed group attention have emerged within philosophy in recent years as fruitful areas of study: the long-entrenched dualistic picture of an inner mental event standing behind its physical manifestation has been supplanted by a model of embodied action that is unburdened by a misleading inner/outer dichotomy (so we can now see how an intentional musical work emergeswithin, and not prior to, its physical sound). This makes possible a new focus on a special form of collective intentional action that is not contained within one single mind at one given moment, but rather distributed across a group of individuals engaged in a cooperative, interactively creative performance; cases examined here include John Coltrane, among others.
