Abstract:
Policies of pacification through amnesty imply the promise of forgetting and forgiving. However, the attempt to decree collective amnesia from above is subject to contestation. The brutal suppression of the 1798 rebellion in Ulster, enforced through counter-revolutionary measures of state terror, and the limitations placed on the attempt to introduce amnesty for the rebels left a residue of bitter memories, which could not be openly discussed in public. Those who benefitted from pardons and converted to loyalism had an incentive to disremember the rebellion. In addition, transportation, exile, and mass emigration of former rebels removed many recollections from social memory. On the other hand, radicals were determined not to forget and cultivated clandestine narratives of counter-memory, which encouraged the development of a tensely ambiguous culture of social forgetting.

Abstract:
Communities often respond to traumatic events in their histories by destroying objects that would cue memories of a past they wish to forget and by building artefacts which memorialize a new version of their history. Hence, it would seem, communities cope with change by spreading memory ignorance so to allow new memories to take root. This chapter offers an account of some aspects of this phenomenon and of its epistemological consequences. Specifically, it demonstrates that collective forgetfulness is harmful. Here, the focus is exclusively on the harms caused by its contribution to undermining the intellectual self-trust of some members of the community. Further, since some of these harms are also wrongs, collective amnesia contributes to causing epistemic injustices.

Abstract:
On September 16, 2013, the Ananda Bazar Patrika—a leading Bengali daily published from Calcutta—carried a provocatively titled piece in its op-ed pages. The piece was called “Shri Chaitanya: Our Fathomless Self-Forgetting,”1 and it attempted to draw its readers into the realization that they—the Bengali people, as it were—had been complicit in a collective performance of amnesia. Otherwise, the sixteenth-century mystic Shri Chaitanya could not have been condemned to such a degree of apathy and disinterest as he has been in contemporary times. The author of the piece—a scholar of Vaishnavism and the Hindu ...

Abstract:
This chapter examines the collective killing of women and children, demonstrating that the lynching of female and juvenile victims occurred more often than scholars have appreciated and that the practice reflected, in its own particular way, lynchers' elastic, masculinist ideology. The lynching of women has long been shrouded by a kind of historical amnesia. In part, this is due to the limited sources; many of the cases received only cursory newspaper coverage and very few generated court records. Modern scholarship has also relied heavily on the annual lists of lynchings published by the Chicago Tribune, the Tuskegee Institute, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). As historians have pointed out, the traditional periodization of modern lynching scholarship also excludes much of the long history of mob violence against people of Mexican origin or descent.

Abstract:
This chapter portrays the historical actors who established the unique ethnographic collections of the Royal Museum for Central Africa and the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and of Military History (Belgium). The objects they collected, like the majority of those in the museum, arrived in Belgium during the colonial period. The government of the Congo Free State, then the Ministry of Colonies and several scientific institutes issued directives encouraging their agents to collect artifacts, as well as photographic images of “indigenous types” and specimens of physical anthropology. This chapter examines the current amnesia about human remains of colonial provenance and the challenges surrounding the exhibition of religious objects now presented as great artworks of universal interest by metropolitan museums. Addressing the ethics of curatorial practice, the chapter proposes that curators of ethnological collections of colonial provenance, as public historians, strive to make collecting history accessible to larger audiences in their exhibitions.

Abstract:
Following the parliamentary coup d’état of 9 Thermidor Year II, Thermidorian politicians and publicists developed an understanding of the “reign of terror” as a bloody and pervasive tyranny almost unprecedented in history. The Terror was given shape by a massive outpouring of printed descriptions and images of violence and personal suffering. This massive infusion of pathos into politics helped to magnify the psychological impact of the violence of 1793–94. The organizing strategies, images, and tropes used to represent violence during the Thermidorian period suggest that the suffering of individuals was successfully communicated—and systematically exploited—to create a wider collective trauma experienced by many more French men and women than actually suffered serious persecution in 1793–94. powerfully revived the sentimentalist idiom that had been so strangely distorted in 1793–94. Only the general amnesty of November 1795 finally blunted the power of pathos to determine political action.
