<em>Rosa gallica</em> is a native species under strict protection and its cultivars are practically unknown in Poland. The aim of the observations was to evaluate the possibilities of growing the studied cultivars in the climate of Central Poland. In the years 2000–2012, observations were conducted of shrubs derived from the French rose (<em>R. gallica</em> L.) gathered in the Collection of Rose Cultivars of the PAS Botanical Garden CBDC in Powsin, Poland. 13 cultivars were studied: ‘Ambroise Paré’, ‘Belle Herminie’, ‘Camaïeux’, ‘Cardinal de Richelieu’, ‘Charles de Mills’, ‘Complicata’, ‘Duchesse d’Angoulême’, ‘Duchesse de Montebello’, ‘Officinalis’, ‘Splendens’, ‘Tuscany Superb’, ‘Versicolor’, and ‘Violacea’. Every year, frost damage to shrubs, the date of bud breaking and leaf development as well as the dates of initial, full and final flowering were recorded and the presence of symptoms of damage from diseases was observed. During the observation years, periods of weather conditions unfavorable for roses often occurred, both in autumn-winter-spring and in summer. Only small differences were observed in winter hardiness, development during the growing season, and blooming period. The majority of the studied rose cultivars overwinter without frost damage, even through severe winters. The shrubs begin their growth late, usually until the second half of April. Gallicas start flowering early, in the third decade of May – first decade of June. Most Gallicas should find a wider application as shrubs or hedges for parks, green areas in cities, historical places, or home gardens. They are recommendable for their high resistance to frost and diseases as well as for their small size.

Abstract ‘Hispana Gallica’ or ‘Hispana Rhenana’? Bernhar of Worms first owner of the Viennese Codex ÖNB 411. Only the manuscript Wien ÖNB 411 transmits the Collectio Hispana Gallica in a complete version. So far, its medieval library home has been unknown. An addendum at the end of this codex, which has been not accurately understood in former research, suggests that bishop Bernhar of Worms was the owner of this manuscript around 810/11. In the course of the analysis of Wien ÖNB 411 the article addresses the distinction between codices, transmitting the Collectio Hispana Gallica, and those, transmitting the Collectio Hadriano-Hispanica (which depends from the Collectio Hispana Gallica). As a result it appears that the Collectio Hispana Gallica was transmitted and adapted in remarkable intensity in the Upper Rhine region. Based on these findings the article discusses consequences in determining the chronological starting point for the transformation of the Collectio Hispana Gallica into the Collectio Hispana Gallica Augustodunensis, which was already shaped by pseudo-isidorian influences.

Tamarix L. plants are tolerant to extreme environmental conditions and represent a resource for the recovery of marginal areas. The aim of this study is to develop a molecular method for species assignment and to characterize the genetic differentiation of Italian Tamarix populations. Blind sampling was performed and individuals were gathered without any regard for species identity from seven sites in Italy. If possible, flowers for species identification were collected, but 60% of samples remained unidentified. The genotypic profile of 17 microsatellite markers and a Bayesian statistical approach allowed the individuals to split among genetic entities rather than by their species identity. A clear assignment of Tamarix africana Poir. individuals was found, but this was not the case for Tamarix gallica L. and Tamarix canariensis Willd., whose individuals were clustered in a unique group (T. gallica-like). In T. africana, the Bayesian analysis of the genetic structure pointed out the existence of a unique gene pool, whereas according to principal coordinates analysis (PCOA) and FST values, the populations from Lazio and Sardinia were more differentiated. All the analyses performed showed a differentiation between Sicily and peninsular Southern Italy in the T. gallica-like group. This study is the first to report the characterization of the natural genetic resources of Italian tamarisks and it suggests the absence of genetic differentiation between T. gallica and T. canariensis.

Over the past several decades, however, evidence for the use and circulation of continental canon law collections in pre-Conquest England has been mounting, to the extent that it could challenge traditional notions about the dominance of penitential law in the early English Church. This study presents new evidence for the reception in Anglo-Saxon England of a major continental collection known as theCollectio vetus Gallica.

The paper discusses three corticioid species of the genus <em>Vararia</em> P. Karst. Two species, <em>Vararia gallica</em> (Bourdot & Galzin) Boidin and <em>Vararia ochroleuca</em> (Bourdot & Galzin) Donk, are reported from Poland for the first time. The cosmopolitan species <em>Vararia investiens</em> P. Karst., previously known only from one Polish record, was rediscovered after over 100 years since the previous Polish collection. Macro- and micromorphological characters of the Polish collections are described and illustrated. The knowledge of their distribution and ecology is briefly summarized. A key to European members of the genus is given.

During the so-called ‘Gallican crisis’ between 1551 and 1552, Pope Julius III accused the French king of preparing an ecclesiastical schism, while the possibility of establishing a French patriarchate was discussed in the royal council. Before long, however, the conflict gave way to a close alliance between the Pope and King Henry II. Was the ‘Gallican crisis’ just a tool of political pressure on Julius III? To what extent were the plans of the king and his entourage to reform the Gallican Church serious? The lack of sources can be filled, at least in part, by turning to the work by Raoul Spifame, a lawyer of the Paris Parliament, titled Dicaearchiae Henrici Regis Christianissimi Progymnasmata (1556). In its essence, it is a collection of rhetorical exercises in the field of jurisprudence written in the form of royal decrees designed to reform everything in the kingdom. Surprisingly, some of these fictional measures later would be actually implemented. The reason for the author’s ‘clairvoyance’ lies in his contacts with the secretaries of state who were then preparing large-scale reforms, which would eventually be cancelled due to the unexpected death of the king and the outbreak of the Wars of Religion. A considerable part of the decrees is devoted to plans of the reform of the Gallican Church: from the elevation of the Bishopric of Paris to the rank of an archdiocese to tightening control over the morals of prelates. This article pays special attention to how the Dicaearchiae regulated the elements of ‘everyday piety’ — the rituals of blessing of the bridal chamber, purification after childbirth, and belief in the existence of limb. A limitation of ‘luxury’ was also to be introduced: refusal of precious ecclesiastical ornaments, redundant bells, and a reduction in the number of holidays associated with the veneration of saints. Without abandoning the cult of saints, Spifame undertakes a reform of the ecclesiastical calendar and creates a sort of national martyrology of warriors who died for their homeland and ‘are venerated as saints without a canonisation’.

Abstract The wild bees Andrena assimilis Radoszkowski, 1876, and Andrena gallica Schmiedeknecht, 1883, are morphologically very similar species and by some authors they are treated as one taxon – A. assimilis. Some other authors treat A. gallica as a subspecies of A. assimilis, others assert that both A. gallica and A. assimilis are valid species. After analysing the morphological features, we confirm that they should be treated as two distinct species. The following characters help to separate A. gallica from A. assimilis: in the case of females – the colouration of the stigma and veins in the forewing, in the case of males – the microsculpture of the surface of the metasomal terga, the punctation of terga II–III, and the width of the edeagus. Andrena gallica was reported in Poland in the first half of the twentieth century from the following regions: Baltic Coast, Kraków-Wieluń Upland, Małopolska Upland, and Wielkopolska-Kujawy Lowland. Due to the synonymy, these records were included in the distribution of A. assimilis. After more than 50 years, the occurrence of A. gallica in Poland has been confirmed. The new record of the species is reported based on the specimen collected in Kampinos National Park (Mazovian Lowland). In 2004, one male was collected on fallow land. Water pan-traps (Moericke traps) were used to do the collecting. Diagnoses of both species, data on their biology, as well as distribution, are provided.

One of the bright and dramatic pages in the history of Parisian Orthodox Theology is the activity of the Fotiy`s Brotherhood (1925 (1923?) – 1980s). However, it has not yet been studied completely. The publication, which is based in particular on archival documents from the personal collection of Nicholay Poltoratsky’s family (1909–1990), who at a certain stage acted as the head of the secret society. Nicholay Poltoratsky returned to Homeland after the Second World War and ended up in Odessa, becoming a center of intellectual and spiritual attraction. Our task is to contribute to the reconstruction of the history of the Fotiy`s Brotherhood. That plot is very important for the history of the Russian religious and philosophical Renaissance. The Brotherhood at different times included A. Stavrovsky, V. Lossky, E. Kovalevsky, P. Kovalevsky, M. Kovalevsky, L. Uspensky, I. Lagovsky, G. Krug, A. Bloom and others. Members of the Brotherhood proposed the project of “Latin Rite Orthodoxy” with elements of the ancient Gallican rite. Such a project was implemented in several French parishes, of which some are still active now. The focus of the paper is on a theoretical analysis of the project to create an Orthodox religious order, connecting loyalty to the Orthodox tradition and an оrientation to the ancient Gallican liturgical rite of the Christian church before the time of schism.

Individuals of the basidiomycete fungus Armillaria are well known for their ability to spread from woody substrate to substrate on the forest floor through the growth of rhizomorphs. Here, we made 248 collections of A. gallica in one locality in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. To identify individuals, we genotyped collections with molecular markers and somatic compatibility testing. We found several different individuals in proximity to one another, but one genetic individual stood out as exceptionally large, covering hundreds of tree root systems over approximately 75 hectares of the forest floor. Based on observed growth rates of the fungus, we estimate the minimum age of the large individual as 2500 years. With whole-genome sequencing and variant discovery, we also found that mutation had occurred within the somatic cells of the individual, reflecting its historical pattern of growth from a single point. The overall rate of mutation over the 90 mb genome, however, was extremely low. This same individual was first discovered in the late 1980s, but its full spatial extent and internal mutation dynamic was unknown at that time. The large individual of A. gallica has been remarkably resistant to genomic change as it has persisted in place.

Liturgical chant bibliography 12 maintains the traditional division into: (1) Editions and facsimile editions, (2) Books and reprints, (3) Congress reports, (4) Chant journals, (5) Collections of essays and dictionaries, (6) Articles in periodicals and Festschriften. Additions to previous bibliographies, consisting mainly of reviews, follow the present introduction. A significant publication in 2002 was without doubt the colour facsimile of the manuscript Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, fonds lat. 776 (12002), an eleventh-century gradual from the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Gaillac near Albi. Although no staff lines are present, the music is notated carefully in diastematic notation. The availability of a facsimile of this famous manuscript will certainly be of value for the study of semiology and the transmission history of tropes, proses and prosulae. It also contains traces of the Gallican and Mozarabic chant repertories.

THE writings of the seventeenth-century English theologian, Henry Holden, played a small but significant part in the development of western religious thought in the centuries following his death. His most important work, Divinae fidei analysis, first printed in Latin at Paris in 1652 and afterwards translated and published in English, was several times reprinted in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and was later incorporated in two theological collections, J. P. Migne's Theologiae cursus completus (tom.6, 1839), and Josef Braun's Bibliotheca regularum fidei (tom.2, 1844). It influenced the thinking, in the nineteenth century, not only of avowed liberals such as Dôllinger and Acton, but also, in some degree, of moderate progressives like Newman. In recent years, specialist studies on different aspects of Holden's thought have appeared in English and in French. So far, however, no serious attempt has been made to revise his bibliography: we still have to rely, in large measure, on that published by Joseph Gillow more than a century ago. In this article I want to bring together material that has come to light since Gillow's time and to examine Holden's works afresh against the background of his life and the religious and political developments in England and France at that period. I shall devote particular attention to two themes that run through all his work. One is gallicanism, that amalgam of mediaeval theories limiting the authority of the papacy in relation to secular states and their rulers and national churches and their bishops. It will be seen that plans which Holden advanced in the 1640s for the reform of the Catholic Church in England along gallican lines are based largely on ideas developed in his Divinaefidei analysis published a few years later. The other is his analytical and critical approach to doctrine, aiming always to distinguish truths solidly based on Scripture and tradition from the mere speculations of theologians. It is an approach that had been made popular in France by the Catholic controversialist, François Véron, whose Régula fidei catholicae was first published at Paris in 1644 when Holden was probably already at work on his Divinae fidei analysis. It reveals itself in all Holden's writings and distinguishes him from many of the other Catholic apologists who were drawn into controversy with the Anglican divines of the post-Chillingworth era.

The loss and decline of native tree species caused by invasive plant pathogens is a major threat to the endangered endemic forests of the Hawaiian Islands (3). Thus, it is critical to characterize existing pathogens to evaluate potential invasiveness. In August 2005, rhizomorphs and mycelial bark fans of genet HI-4 were collected from dead/declining, mature trees of introduced Monterey pine (Pinus radiata) on the southern flank of Mauna Kea, Hawaii (approximately 19°42′55″N, 155°26′48″W, elevation 2,175 m). In March of 2008, three additional genets (HI-11, HI-13, and HI-16) were collected as rhizomorphs at a site named Pu'u La'au (west slope of the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve area, approximately 19°50′00″N, 155°35′35″W, elevation 2,275 to 2,550 m), approximately 20 km west-northwest of the HI-4 collection. These genets were collected from apparently healthy loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) that were introduced, apparently healthy māmane (Sophora chrysophylla; an endemic tree species of Hawaii), dead and dying māmane, and apparently healthy Methley plum (Prunus cerasifera × Prunus salicina) that was planted. All isolates were determined to have identical sequences in the intergenic spacer-1 rDNA region (GenBank Accession No. DQ995357). On the basis of somatic paring tests against North American Armillaria tester strains and 99% nucleotide sequence identities to GenBank Accession Nos. AY190245 and AY190246, these isolates were identified as Armillaria gallica. Past surveys have noted A. mellea sensu lato and A. nabsnona on numerous hosts in Hawaii, including māmane (3,4). However, to our knowledge, this is the first confirmed report of A. gallica in Hawaii, where it was found on māmane, Monterey pine, loblolly pine, and Methley plum. A. gallica has been widely categorized as a beneficial saprophyte, an opportunistic pathogen, or an aggressive pathogen (2). A recent study suggests that A. gallica can be highly pathogenic in some areas of the eastern United States and it is an important component of forest decline (2), especially under increasing stressors such as climate change. The isolation of A. gallica from declining stands on both introduced and endemic hosts under drought conditions suggests this pathogen is a contributing factor to forest decline on the island of Hawaii. Because the māmane tree is an important component of the native forest stands and essential to the endangered palila bird (Loxioides bailleui), which feeds almost exclusively on its green seeds (1), continued monitoring of Armillaria root disease is warranted. Objective: to substantiate the significance of historical documents of legal concern in digital library resources of historical and cultural heritage as an important component of cultural memory; to generalize modern approaches to improving the popularization of these library resources in the information space. The methods of systematic analysis of library databases of historical and cultural heritage have been used in the research, in particular, the V. I. Vernadsky National Library (Ukraine), World Digital Library, Europeana, Gallica, Bavarian State Library, etc. Results. The monuments of law as a component of historical and cultural heritage, which need to be popularized in the information space, given the scientific, educational, and ideological significance, have been studied. Conclusions. The resources of monuments of law testify to the longevity of historical development, the heredity of legal culture, and the involvement of Ukrainian political and legal thought in the European context. Digitization of such documents and their inclusion in digital collections expands user access to monuments of law and intensifies their circulation in the cultural information space. Effective work directions on the popularization of digital sources of historical and cultural heritage according to the results of the analysis of foreign experience are the use of mobile technologies and the representation of resources in social media.

In September 2007, rhizomorphs with morphological characteristics of Armillaria were collected from woody hosts in forests of Mexico State, Veracruz, and Oaxaca, Mexico. Based on pairing tests, isolates were assigned to five somatically compatible genets or clones (MEX7R, MEX11R, MEX23R, MEX28R, and MEX30R). These genets were all identified as Armillaria gallica based on somatic pairing tests against known tester isolates and nucleotide sequences of the translation elongation factor 1α (tef-1α; GenBank Accession Nos. KF156772 to 76). Sequences of tef-1α for all genets showed a max identity of 97 to 99% to A. gallica (ST23, JF313125) (3,4). However, A. gallica comprises a genetically diverse complex that likely represents multiple cryptic species (3). In Mexico, this species has been previously reported in northeastern Morelos on Quercus sp., eastern Mexico State on Pinus hartwegii, and southwestern Mexico State on Prunus persica (1,2). This study identified associations with 10 new hosts within three states of Mexico, but only five hosts were diseased. Genet MEX7R comprised seven isolates collected in the University of Chapingo forest near Texcoco, Mexico State (19°18′10.764″ N, 98°42′14.147″ W, elevation 3441 m). Four MEX7R isolates were collected from diseased Alnus sp. including the root ball of a 130 cm dbh, root-disease killed tree, one isolate from a symptomless Senecio sp. s.l. (Roldana sp.) shrub and two isolates from symptomless Abies religiosa. Genet MEX11R comprised four isolates from a cloud forest near Xalapa, Veracruz (19°31′14.628″ N, 96°59′22.812″ W, elevation 1496 m). MEX11R isolates were collected from the roots of a root-disease killed Carpinus caroliniana, and from trees with no obvious symptoms (Miconia mexicana, Quercus xalapensis, and Liquidambar styraciflua). Two isolates of genet MEX23R were collected from the Jardin Botanico Francisco Javier Clavijero, Instituto de Ecologia, A.C., Xalapa, Veracruz (19°30′49.067″ N, 96°56′32.999″ W, elevation 1344 m). These isolates were from root-diseased Eriobotrya japonica (non-native fruit tree) that showed obvious symptoms (flaccid, chlorotic, and senescing leaves) and from an adjacent, infected Platanus mexicana that did not show readily observable symptoms. Two collections near Oaxaca, Oaxaca, included a single isolate MEX28R from the root ball of a recently root disease-killed Arbutus xalapensis within a small root disease center at Peña Prieta, in Parque La Cumbre, near Ixtepeji (17°09′42.084″ N, 96°38′15.936″ W, elevation 2853 m) and a single isolate MEX30R from the base of an asymptomatic Alnus acuminata near the El Carrizal fish hatchery 10 km northeast of San Miguel del Valle (17°06′45.036″ N, 96°24′03.743″ W, elevation 2594 m). Armillaria gallica has a circumpolar distribution with an extremely wide host range, and its ecological behavior varies greatly. Continued surveys are needed to better understand the distribution and ecological impacts of this pathogen in relation to Armillaria root disease in Mexico and the potential influences of climate change. Although A. gallica displays diverse ecological behavior, trees infected with A. gallica are less likely to survive the stresses of human activity and a changing climate (4). References: (1) D. There are many poems of homoerotic bias/themes amongst the archive of the “cantigas de escárnio e mal-dizer”, which in general show traces of satire and/or disgust. Some characters of medieval Portugal are fo-cussed in series of such cantigas, composed by many Gallician and Portuguese troubadours. Cantiga 1479, collected at the Cancioneiro da Biblioteca Nacional is by Aires Pérez Vuitoron and deals with some Fernan Días, who probably was a royal justice, who seems to have developed delusions of marrying someone of his own gender –to general scorn. It is studied in the fundamental edition of the “Cancioneiro Escarninho” (i.e., “Scornful Poetry Collection”) organized by Rodrigues Lapa (1965). The present essay adopts a critical eye on the necessity of reshaping and re-reading the unread in the literary canon of the Portuguese language. Such a critical stance considers that the construction of memory –including the literary one– coincides with the construction of citizenry.

Burgeoning numbers of books and periodicals from earlier centuries are becoming available in online databases such as the British Library Online Newspaper Archive, the Making of America collection, the Million Book Project, the Gallica Project, Google Book Search and the Royal Society's Digital Journal Archive. For those databases that offer it, full-text search capability provides the historian with a novel tool for researching the origin and development of scientific language. A case study is given concerning the adoption of the ‘whirlpool’ epithet for Messier 51 (the astronomical nebula in which the Third Earl of Rosse first discovered spiral structure in 1845). This illustrates the power of the tool but also reveals some limitations. In particular, access to originals is still often necessary. Unexpectedly, the astronomical appropriation of ‘whirlpool’ predates Rosse's discovery.

The taxonomy of six species and one subspecies of Natatolana, which have previously been recorded from the north Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, is reviewed. Natatolana caeca, N. gallica, N. gracilis and N. neglecta are redescribed from the type material. The location of possible type material of N. borealis is reported and a redescription of this species is provided, based on material from the type locality. Natatolana neglecta var. imicola is recognized as a valid species. Natatolana schtnidti is regarded as a junior synonym of N. imicola based on comparison of type material and this material is used to redescribe the species. Distribution records for these species are summarized from examination of material held in various collections and a key to separate these species is provided.

The France-Poland Digital Library is composed of four major thematic groups, divided into smaller sections. Each of these are accompanied by articles both in French and Polish to contextualize historically and culturally the selected documents. Starting with the election of Henry of Valois to the Polish throne in 1573, it goes up to Charles de Gaulle’s memorable visit in 1967. Part of the Shared Heritage collection and ranking first in terms of visit, the project is continuously enriched with new content and sections and aims to develop new partnerships.

The digital age has been a boon for intellectual historians, particularly those of us who work on early modern Europe and America. The mass digitization of old books has made research more efficient than ever: first editions are there for the downloading on Google Books, Gallica, Liberty Fund, Project Gutenberg, and elsewhere. The creation of such large-scale databases as Early English Books Online (EEBO), Eighteenth-Century Collection Online (ECCO), the Making of the Modern World (formerly Goldsmiths’–Kress), or, on a more modest level, the ARTFL project's FRANTEXT, has also breathed new life into old texts. Books that lay forgotten for generations can now be rediscovered thanks to the magic of search engines. To be sure, this power has not always been wielded for good: students today can “cite anything, but construe nothing,” stringing together KWICs (keywords in context), and reading only a surrounding sentence or two (if that). But however they are used, these tools and platforms have transformed our daily work habits.

When Jean Lemaire de Belges composed his Traité de la différence des schismes et des conciles de l'eglise in 1511, the purpose of the text was to support Louis XII in his struggle with Pope Julius II, to promote the conciliar ideology which the French king was exploiting, and in general to set Christian kings and emperors in favourable contrast with the popes of Rome. Read beside vernacular texts by other authors – Jean Bouchet, Pierre Gringore, Jean Marot, Jean d'Auton – who were writing during France's war with Julius II, it appears more effective propaganda and in some ways bolder and more far-reaching. However, the contrast is not sufficient to mark its author out as heterodox in comparison with the rest, two of whom, Bouchet and Gringore, were later to attack Lutheranism with some vigour. Lemaire's text established itself as an acceptable Gallican–monarchical view of history. It sold well and was printed twice in both 1511 and 1512. It continued to be printed after the crisis which produced it had abated. Increasingly it was included in the collections of Lemaire's works which remained popular long after the author himself dropped out of public view in about 1515. As the Lutheran Reformation developed readers brought new perceptions to the text, and we may deduce a sharpened sense of its relevance from a new edition which appeared in Lyons in 1532. Romain Morin published the text in a new small format, and with a new title, Le Promptuaire des conciles de l'eglise catholique, avec les scismes et la difference d'iceulx. The text itself was very little modified. Morin himself reissued the Promptuaire in 1533 and ten years later Paris printers took it up, showing that the text continued popular in France into the 1550s, when it was finally placed on the Sorbonne's list of forbidden books.

The aim of the present study was to assess fungal and oomycete communities in the irrigation water of forest nurseries, focusing on plant pathogens in the hope of getting a better understanding of potential pathogenic microorganisms and spreading routes in forest nurseries. The study sites were at Anykščiai, Dubrava, Kretinga and Trakai state forest nurseries in Lithuania. For the collection of microbial samples, at each nursery five 100-L water samples were collected from the irrigation ponds and filtered. Following DNA isolation from the irrigation water filtrate samples, these were individually amplified using ITS rDNA as a marker and subjected to PacBio high-throughput sequencing. Clustering in the SCATA pipeline and the taxonomic classification of 24,006 high-quality reads showed the presence of 1286 non-singleton taxa. Among those, 895 were representing fungi and oomycetes. The detected fungi were 57.3% Ascomycota, 38.1% Basidiomycota, 3.1% Chytridiomycota, 0.8% Mucoromycota and 0.7% Oomycota. The most common fungi were Malassezia restricta E. Guého, J. Guillot & Midgley (20.1% of all high-quality fungal sequences), Pezizella discreta (P. Karst.) Dennis (10.8%) and Epicoccum nigrum Link (4.9%). The most common oomycetes were Phytopythium cf. citrinum (B. Paul) Abad, de Cock, Bala, Robideau, Lodhi & Lévesque (0.4%), Phytophthora gallica T. Jung & J. Nechwatal (0.05%) and Peronospora sp. 4248_322 (0.05%). The results demonstrated that the irrigation water used by forest nurseries was inhabited by a species-rich but largely site-specific communities of fungi. Plant pathogens were relatively rare, but, under suitable conditions, these can develop rapidly, spread efficiently through the irrigation system and be a threat to the production of high-quality tree seedlings.

Objective: To analyse in the book Psico Geometria: el estúdio de la geometria basado en la psicologia infantil by Maria Montessori (1934) as the didactic approach of the Pythagorean theorem, proposed by her, fits into an experimental geometry perspective. Design: Using documentary analysis, we analysed the books of the following authors: Hoüel (1867), Méray (1874), Laisant (1898, 1906), Calkins (1861), Bert (1886), Prestes (1895), Lyra da Silva (1923), Wentworth and Hill (1901) and Montessori (1916, 1934) to understand the approach to teaching geometry.Environment and participants:The research sources collected in the National Library of France (BNF) and in the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) Digital Repository refer to the geographic environment of authors from four countries Data collection and analysis: The selected and analysed documents can be found at BNF – Gallica in a digitized version, as well as at the UFSC Digital Repository. Based on the documentary analysis of these books, we found that the methodological proposals seek to escape from a deductive presentation of elementary geometry and include in their texts experiences for the introduction of concepts and visual demonstrations of elementary geometry. Results: The authors of the analysed works, from different countries, criticized the elementary teaching of geometry, especially the authors of textbooks, for the fact that they approach deductive geometry in the initial classes, favouring a deductive presentation of mathematics. Montessori's book shows an experimental geometry proposal for the Pythagorean theorem. Conclusion: We found that Montessori's proposal, besides presenting characteristics of an experimental geometry, also inserts some deductive reasoning.

A catalogue and bibliography of Batrachospermales (Rhodophyta) in China is presented. There are 33 species belonged to 10 genera and 2 families. Species distribution among the 10 gen- era are as follows: Batrachospermum, 6; Kumanoa, 10; Montagnia, 1; Nothocladus, 1; Sheathia, 3; Sirodotia, 4; Torularia, 1; Virescentia, 1; Lemanea, 4; and Paralemanea, 2. According to geo- graphical distribution, the members of Batrachospermales in China are composed of 3 types: cos- mopolitan (distributed on at least 5 continents or 10 countries of the world), 6 taxa; regionally dis- tributed (distributed in no more than 4 continents or 10 countries), 15 taxa; and endemic to China (collected, described and reported only from China), 12 taxa. Most species were distributed in East and Southwest China, up to or more than 20 species. Eight species were recorded in North and Central China, respectively. Only 1 or 2 species were found in Northeast and South China, respec- tively. However, no one has been found in the northwest China so far. Thirteen species of Batra- chospermales in China have been confirmed by morphological characteristics combining with mo- lecular data. Few of the recent treatments exploring Leviathan's dramatic expansion of ecclesiological considerations have delved into the political circumstances that furnished Hobbes's immediate Parisian surroundings, as he penned the work during the 1640s. This paper examines French ecclesial debates that were triggered by the publication of a polemical collection of texts narrating the “rights and liberties of the Gallican church.” Many of the tracts included had been written during the accession crisis of the late sixteenth century, and advocated a sacralized view of kingship in order to exclude papal jurisdictional claims in France. This paper argues that innovations in Leviathan's sacred history mirror tropes employed by Gallican writers, so that Hobbes can be seen as adopting a parallel strategy in establishing Leviathan's Supreme Pastor. This explication suggests that Hobbes composed Leviathan to appropriate, rather than eliminate, claims associated with “spiritual” power for the civil sovereign, as critical to the exercise of sovereignty.

Cela fait dix ans que Gallica, la bibliothèque numérique de la BnF, fonctionne de manière transverse pour assurer sa présence sur les réseaux sociaux numériques (RSN). Pour mener une analyse réflexive sur la manière dont cette activité s’insère au sein de l’institution, cet article appréhende l’équipe des RSN de Gallica comme un réseau social à part entière, basé sur la démocratisation de la pratique, et décrit, en s’appuyant sur l’expérience des praticiens, les modes organisationnels qui assurent la pérennité d’un tel modèle. Les auteurs s’interrogent sur le miroir éclaté et fragile que les médias sociaux tendent à la collection numérique, et montrent sous quelles conditions ces derniers sont susceptibles de modeler de manière vertueuse une bibliothèque numérique nationale, dépositaire de la mémoire commune de professionnels et d’amateurs.

Armillaria root and butt diseases, which are a global issue, can be influenced by changing environmental conditions. Armillaria gallica is a well-known pathogen of diverse trees worldwide (Brazee and Wick 2009). Besides A. gallica causing root rot of Hemerocallis sp. and Cornus sp. in South Carolina (Schnabel et al. 2005), little is reported on the distribution and host range of A. gallica in the southeastern USA. In July 2017, three Armillaria isolates were obtained from two naturally occurring hosts in Georgia, USA and cultured on malt extract medium (3% malt extract, 3% dextrose, 1% peptone, and 1.5% agar). One isolate (GA3) was obtained in Unicoi State Park near Helen, Georgia (Lat. 34.712275, Long. -83.727765, elev. 498 m) from the basal portion of Rhododendron sp. with extensive root/butt decay, but no crown symptoms were evident (Supplementary Figure 1). GA4 and GA5 (Lat. 33.902433, Long. -83.382453, elev. 215 m) were isolated from wind-felled Quercus rubra (red oak) with root disease at the State Botanical Gardens in Athens, Georgia. GA4 was associated with a large root ball (ca. 4-m diameter) (Supplementary Figure 2), and GA5 was obtained from a mature tree with infected roots, with characteristic spongy rot of Armillaria root disease. Crown symptoms could not be evaluated because the crowns had been removed before the collections. Several other oaks with Armillaria root disease were noted throughout the State Botanical Gardens. Pairing tests reduced these three isolates (whiteish mycelia with a dark, brownish crust and rhizomorphs), to two genets with GA4 = GA5. Both genets (GA3 and GA4) were identified as A. gallica using translation elongation factor 1α (tef1) sequences (Genbank Nos. MT761697 and MT761698, respectively) that showed ≥ 97% identity (≥ 98% coverage) with A. gallica sequences (KF156772, KF156775). Also, nine replications of somatic pairing tests showed 33 – 67% compatibility with A. gallica (occurs in southeastern USA), compared with 0 – 22% for A. mexicana, A. mellea (occurs in southeastern USA), A. solidipes, and Desarmillaria tabescens (occurs in southeastern USA). To our knowledge, this note represents the first report of A. gallica on Rhododendron and Q. rubra in Georgia, USA, which has experienced severe drought in recent decades (e.g., Park Williams et al. 2017) that could predispose trees to Armillaria infection (e.g., Wargo 1996). Quercus rubra was previously reported as a host of A. gallica in Arkansas (Kelley et al. 2009) and Massachusetts (Brazee and Wick 2009), USA. In Missouri, USA, A. gallica has been reported as a weak pathogen with potential biological control against A. mellea (Bruhn et al. 2000). Other reports from several regions on various hosts suggest pathogenicity of A. gallica is associated with changing climate (Nelson et al. 2013, Kim et al. 2017, Kubiak et al. 2017). Wide genetic variation and/or cryptic speciation within A. gallica may account for differences in ecological behavior (Klopfenstein et al. 2017), but this is difficult to evaluate because Armillaria pathogenicity tests cannot be used on most forest tree seedlings. This study suggests that A. gallica is more widespread than previously known and its adverse impacts on woody plants may intensify over time, depending on the environmental conditions. Further studies are needed to determine environmental influences on A. gallica, the full distribution of A. gallica, and its effects in forests of the southeastern USA.

Committed to the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) since 2016, the National Natural History Museum (MNHN) library encountered opportunities and new challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The origins of MNHN date back to 1635, with the foundation of a royal garden for medicinal and teaching purposes, by King Louis XIII. It became the National Natural History Museum in 1793 during the French Revolution. The MNHN collections today include about seventy million specimens. These collections constitute a global archive and a major research infrastructure. Being a very important center of research and teaching, the institution groups together several entities at thirteen different locations. It is deeply committed to preserving biodiversity and to sharing knowledge with the public through its galleries, botanical gardens, zoos and libraries. The library, consisting of a main library and several specialized libraries, is one of the world’s largest natural history libraries. The collection contains more than two million documents of all kinds: printed and electronic books and periodicals; manuscripts and archives; maps, drawings, photographs and art collections. The library takes part in the French higher education libraries network and is associated with the French national library, which offers many opportunities for collaboration at a national level. The MNHN library launched its first digitization program twenty years ago, beginning with the academic publications the MNHN has been releasing since 1802 and including the publications of the related learned societies. A second program devoted to taxonomic documentation began in 2014. It is a research-driven digitization program built in collaboration with the MNHN researchers. A third program shares the treasures of the library, e.g., precious books, manuscripts and archives; iconography (such as the famous velum collection), scientific objects or artworks. The MNHN digital library is harvested by Gallica, the digital library of the French national library. After participating in the BHL-Europe project from 2009 to 2012, the MNHN library became a BHL Member in 2016 and started uploading content in September 2017. The complete collection of MNHN academic publications from 1802 to 2000 is now available on BHL. The publications of the learned societies related to the MNHN are to be the library’s next contribution. During the first lockdown, from March to May 2020, librarians in charge of content uploading to BHL were able to pursue this task full-time, which increased the production. The last BHL-Europe files were loaded during this period of time. More than 100,000 pages were added in 2020. As the production increased, so did the museum's outreach in 2020, by more than 70%, both in number of visitors and in number of pages viewed. It seems that the MNHN library is now better identified as the French access point to BHL, both by learned societies and by researchers who ask for information or for help. But beyond an increased production and a better outreach, the pandemic also provided new tasks for remote workers. The first lockdown was a very difficult time, especially for people who had no remote work and felt deprived of their professional identity. So progressively new tasks were established for people for whom no remote tasks were yet defined. Among these new activities, a workflow for the creation of article-level metadata was set up with the help of Roderic Page (University of Glasgow, Scotland). Thanks to this work, users can easily search and browse individual articles within several MNHN publications, such as Adansonia. The pandemic turned out to be an accelerator of digital awareness and transformation, not only at the management level, but more widely for the whole library staff as well. By providing new remote tasks, BHL reduced inequalities within the library team and offered new opportunities. This greater involvement also strengthened the sense of belonging to BHL, which is definitely not only a resource but also a community, helping us get through this difficult period. Our goal now is to continue to perpetuate these projects. The MNHN library also intends to capitalize on all this work in its own digital library, by assigning digital object identifiers (DOI). This work on articles is indeed a driver for the evolution of the information systems. The Museum is currently redesigning its whole IT infrastructure for collections, helping the library be part of a larger movement. The objectives of this new system are to better connect library collections and naturalist collections and to face the challenge of interoperability in the European and international ecosystem in which the MNHN and BHL participates.

Abstract Background Wild edible mushrooms (WEM) are economically significant and used in traditional medicines worldwide. The region of Jammu and Kashmir (Western Himalayas) is enriched with the diversity of edible mushrooms, collected by the rural people for food and income generation. This is the first detailed study on diversity and ethno-medicinal uses of mushrooms from the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Methods Consecutive surveys were conducted to record ethnomycological diversity and socio-economic importance of wild edible mushrooms value chain in rural areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir during 2015–2019. Ethnomycological data were collected with a semi-structured questionnaire having a set of questions on indigenous mycological knowledge and collection and retailing of wild edible mushrooms. A total of 923 informants from the study area provided the results identifying the gender, type of mushroom species, medicinal uses, and marketing of mushrooms. Diversity of mushrooms was studied by using quadrat and transect methods. Principal component analysis (PCA) and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) were also applied to the dataset to analyse the relationship between species distribution, the underlying environmental factors, and habitat types. PCA identified the major species-specific to the sites and put them close to the sites of distribution. Results A total of 131 mushroom species were collected and identified during 2015–2019 from the study area. Ninety-seven species of mushrooms were reported new to the State of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The dominant mushroom family was Russulaceae with 23 species followed by Agaricaceae, 16 species. Major mushroom species identified and grouped by the PCA were Coprinus comatus, Lactarius sanguifluus, Amanita fulva, Armillaria gallica, Lycoperdon perlatum, Lycoperdon pyriforme, and Russula creminicolor. Sparassis crispa, Pleurotus sp, and Laetiporus sulphureus were recorded most edible and medicinally significant fungi. Morels were also expensive and medicinally important among all harvested macro-fungal species. These were reported to use against common ailments and various health problems. Conclusions Collection and retailing of WEM contribute to improving the socio-economic status, providing alternative employment and food security to rural people of the area. These mushrooms are used as a source of food and traditional medicines among the rural informants and could be used as a potential source of antibacterial and anticancer drugs in the future.

Dès le tournant des années 1990, la promesse du numérique apparaît clairement aux professionnels des bibliothèques : une reproductibilité infinie sans perte de qualité, une capacité de mise à disposition très large, la possibilité de toucher de nombreuses audiences différentes… de quoi alimenter l’utopie de la reproduction qui voudrait que l’on puisse, de manière transparente, transférer tous les documents vers ce nouveau support. Un projet pharaonique voit le jour : celui d’une bibliothèque « d’un type entièrement nouveau », c’est-à-dire, qui s’appuierait massivement sur les nouvelles technologies pour décupler son impact social et s’adresser à tous les citoyens de la nation. Les premiers projets de numérisation se dessinent dès 1990, accompagnés d’un « poste de lecture assisté par ordinateur » (PLAO) très ambitieux. Pourtant, à peine quelques années plus tard, l’irruption du Web va profondément bouleverser ce projet. Ubiquité, volatilité, déstructuration, massification, internationalisation : autant de caractéristiques du Web qui ont contraint la Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) à adapter ses processus de travail, ses méthodes de traitement, ses outils et son organisation pour entrer dans « la plus grande révolution depuis Gutenberg », celle qui a conduit à l’émergence d’une culture numérique. Pour s'adapter à ce nouveau contexte, l’établissement doit faire un effort considérable à la fois sur le plan technique et sur celui des usages. Au début des années 2000, deux questions se posent pour la bibliothèque : d’une part, celle de son positionnement s’agissant de l’utilisation du Web comme canal de diffusion de ses collections, d’autre part, celle de l’inclusion de documents numériques créés par d’autres et diffusés en ligne dans ces mêmes collections, notamment au titre du dépôt légal. L’évolution de la bibliothèque numérique Gallica et la naissance des archives de l’Internet apparaissent ainsi comme les deux pôles qui conduiront progressivement, au début des années 2000, à l’émergence d’un nouveau patrimoine numérique. Cet article revient sur trente ans d’histoire du numérique à la BnF, de 1990 à 2020, pour montrer comment le Web a fait émerger son propre patrimoine. Après une période d’expérimentation, jusqu’en 2003, puis une période d’industrialisation et de professionnalisation, jusqu’en 2008, la BnF intègre ensuite pleinement le numérique à ses missions.
