Abstract:
A germplasm safeguard programme was set up with 19 grapevine varieties considered as indigenous to northeastern Italy. To better estimate how genetic structure can be used to obtain a conservation perspective of local varieties, genetic variability was examined at 30 nuclear and 3 chloroplast polymorphic microsatellite loci in the native varieties plus 7 European cultivars taken as reference. The genetic profiles of all the cultivars were searched for possible parentage relationships and several suspected cases of the same variety having different names were investigated. The alleles shared at the loci suggest a parent–offspring relationship between Merlot and Cabernet Franc, ‘Gruaja’ and ‘Negrara Veronese’, and Marzemina Nera and Marzemina Bianca. Alleles at the 30 nuclear loci are consistent with Raboso Veronese being the progeny of Marzemina Bianca and Raboso Piave. Chloroplast-specific haplotypes were singled out for the first time in this indigenous germplasm and should be considered typical of the region. It is hypothesized that there are many specific haplotypes for the local varieties due to a past contribution of wild grapevine to the cultivated gene pool. The majority of investigated cultivars were demonstrated to constitute an independent source of genetic variation, and therefore a possible valuable resource of genetic traits for breeders.

Abstract:
Bianca Maria, a lady of the Este family, was a woman of recognised wit and great intelligence who, thanks to her erudition, was able to make her way in a world dominated by the presence and interests of men, earning their esteem. This work examines one of the epistles that Francesco Filelfo, driven by his admiration, addressed to Bianca Maria, the only female figure who appears as addressee of his im-mense collection of letters, a detail that is certainly not irrelevant.

Abstract:
Campania, due to its pedo-climatic conditions and to its large varietal heritage, is able to produce oils with high typicity, each different from the other. In this study a “minor” autochthonous cultivar of Campania “Oliva Bianca” was analyzed. In autumn 2020, on drupes from trees belonging to the Campania germplasm collection a varietal characterization through physical, chemical and chromatic parameters at the harvest was carried out. Phenolic compounds profile, fatty acids composition and volatile organic compounds have been investigated in the resulting oil. Quality indices, organoleptic and sensory qualities (panel test) were also determined on the oil. Drupe weight was 4.31 g, flesh/pit ratio was 3.68 and the accumulation of oil content at harvest in drupes was 18.63% FW. The drupes showed high anthocyanins content equal to 116.10 mg/kg. In the oil studied, the secoiridoids represented the 82.25% of total phenolic compounds, the concentration of oleic acid was 74.82% and the most present volatile compound was trans-2-hexenal (72.30%). High secoiridoid derivatives concentrations such as oleuropein (85.93 mg/kg) and ligstroside (122.43 mg/kg) aglycones were showed. This study showed a good content of qualitative and quantitative parameters of “Oliva Bianca” oil and drupe, that can have important beneficial effects on human health.

Abstract:
The bookplate which Bruno Schulz designed in 1919 for his friend, Stanisław Weingarten, anticipates the motifs of his later literary work: a book, the Book, a collection of books reflecting the collector’s preferences but dependent on the laws undermining the notions of authorship and ownership. Standing on the margin of the artistic and literary scene, Pierrot/Schulz acknowledges the relatedness of his and Weingarten’s “private” vision with the recurrent, universal themes of world art and literature. The scene designed for the emblem of Weingarten’s library demonstrates Schulz’s awareness that the pleasure of discovering spaces of textual cross-fertilizations belongs to the realm of discoveries made by “standard” narratives of psychoanalysis. The scene also demonstrates Schulz’s readiness to imaginatively play with that awareness. The essay traces correspondences between the elements of the 1919 Pierrot ex-libris and the books from Weingarten’s collection which, with time, included and gave privileged position to the works of Bruno Schulz. Among the authors referred to are Rainer Maria Rilke, Alfred Kubin, and Jules Laforgue (in the critical appreciation of Jan Szarota).

Abstract:
Local grape cultivars from different countries of the world are an important part of the gene pool of this culture. Of particular interest are the genotypes of the most ancient regions of viticulture. The territories of the subtropical zone of Georgia and the central part of Abkhazia belong to one of the centers of origin of the cultural grapevine. The purpose of the work was to genotype native Abkhazian grape cultivars, to study their genetic diversity based on DNA profiling data and to compare them with the genotypes of local varieties of other viticultural regions. Samples of plants were taken on the territory of the Republic of Abkhazia in private farmsteads and in the collection of the agricultural firm “Vina i Vody Abkhazii“ (“Wines and Waters of Abkhazia”). The genotyping of the Abkhazian cultivars Avasirhva, Agbizh, Azhapsh, Azhizhkvakva, Azhikvaca, Atvizh, Atyrkuazh, Achkykazh, Kachich was carried out using 14 DNA markers, 9 of which are standard microsatellite markers recommended for the identification of grape varieties. To improve our knowledge about the sizes of the identified alleles, we used the DNA of grape cultivars with a known allelic composition at the analyzed loci. Statistical analysis of the data showed that the observed heterozygosity for the analyzed loci exceeded expected values, which indicates a genetic polymorphism of the studied sample of varieties. Evaluation of genetic similarity within the analyzed group based on the results of genotyping at 14 loci showed that the cultivars Kachich and Azhapsh differed from the other Abkhazian varieties. The obtained DNA profiles of the Abkhazian cultivars were checked for compliance with DNA-fingerprints of grape varieties in the Vitis International Variety Catalogue. The Georgian varieties Azhizhkvakva and Tsitska turned out to be synonyms according to DNA profiles, two varieties from the Database (Italian Albana bianca and Georgian Ojaleshi) have differences in DNA-fingerprints from the varieties Atyrkuazh and Azhikvatsa only in one allele, respectively. When comparing the identified Abkhazian grape genotypes, their difference from the sample of Dagestan, Don, Greek, Turkish, Italian, Spanish, and French varieties and genetic similarity with the genotypes of Georgian grapes were shown.

Lee, A. R. A. "Localising collective devotion : the Bianchi of 1399 at Lucca and Pistoia." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2017. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1546335/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Bianchi of 1399, best described as a popular religious revival, spread throughout northern and central Italy in the second half of that year. Previous historiography has approached the movement as a unique and coherent phenomenon, generalising about the processions and practices of participants. This thesis challenges these presentations, demonstrating the importance of analysing local realisations of the collective devotion of the Bianchi. My focus on Lucca and Pistoia, two Tuscan hotbeds of Bianchi activity, indicates regional diversity within the Bianchi processions. Narrative, verse and visual sources are used in combination to discuss the brief but compulsive fervour of the Bianchi in 1399. I review the context for each town from 1340 to 1415 to establish a baseline of activities against which to compare the Bianchi processions. I examine the three dominant contemporary narratives concerning the Bianchi movement’s origins, addressing the variation between them. I analyse the practices of the Bianchi, focussing on three problematic examples: wearing white, singing laude and self-flagellation. I investigate the communal response to the Bianchi, revealing the different roles undertaken by lay and clerical authorities in orchestrating the processions. Finally, I survey the legacy of the Bianchi, underscoring the importance of local considerations in commemorating the Bianchi in the period immediately afterwards (c.1400-1415). My thesis challenges previous studies of the Bianchi, demonstrating the importance of understanding the processions at a local level. New insights are offered into the two different modes of participating in Bianchi devotions: intramural and itinerant processions, and the role of the authorities in managing this popular revival is revealed. I also address the plague of 1399-1400, exploring the interaction between the Bianchi and this outbreak. My study demonstrates that evaluating the local interpretations of the processions in each individual town is crucial in describing the collective devotions of the Bianchi.

Abstract:
The extensive poetic collection of Bianco da Siena reflects the rich spirituality of Jesuates as, under the generic definition of «lauds», there are writings belonging to different literary genres, such as the abecedary, the acrostic, the epistle and the preaching in verse, the mystical, penitential, santoral, Marian lauda, in addition to the paraphrase of prayers. The characteristic themes of «jesuate piety» often emerge in his compositions, such as the repetition of the name of Jesus, the desire to be dishonored, the importance of prayer, the Immaculate Conception, the devotion to the pope and to the clergy. A «jesuate specificity» emerges, intended to spread the «affective mysticism» of Carthusian matrix first of all among the Jesuates, but more generally among the true lovers of God.

Abstract:
The article examines the collections of antiques of one of the most influential families of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – the Radziwiłł family, preserved in the residences of Nesvizh and Biała Podlaska in the first half and the middle of the 18th century. Different categories of artefacts are analysed and evaluated on the basis of the most unexplored inventories of the Radziwiłł family property, the correspondence of nobles and officials. The collection of the Radziwiłł family antiques continued the tradition of early modern collections of the Central European aristocrats. Their antique collections were among the largest in the Duchy, distinguished by a variety of artefacts. At the Radziwiłł family court, antiques were treated as curiosities, sources of history and instruments of cultural memory. They helped establish the identity of the family and create images of its power.

Abstract:
The Annah Rais pratuokng is a traditional musical instrument of the Bidayuh. It is also known as a simple idiochord chordophone. It is made of a petung bamboo, and the sound faculty is equivalent to the functions of the Bidayuh community gong set. The sound radiator meaning is made up of tawak, satuk and canang. A similar tube zither made of bamboo, named pretong or sretong, is used by the Bidayuh of Bau. The three-string sound radiators are kromong, canang, gong, plus the tawak and gedabak. Pratuokng sound radiators are like the gongs of the Bidayuh. According to Horsbourgh's observation, "... gongs... are both a musical instrument and a representation of wealth”2. The Annah Rais Bidayuh gong set, privately owned by the villagers, can be typically played every year for ritual practice as well as for entertainment during the Gawai celebration on the first and second June. The audio collection of the Ethnology Section of the Sarawak Museum provides similar recordings from other occasions than played duringGawai Panggah. Also, some groups’ celebrations among the Bidayuh Biata, Bidayuh Selakau, and Lara, Bidayuh Lara were recorded. Few recordings were collected in Annah Rais between 1988 and 1998, which still maintain the same settings as those recorded in Kupuo Saba of Annah Rais to this date. In the context of the use of gongs during celebrations, the representations of gong tones can also be found on a pratuokng. One point of debate in the literature about tube zithers is, whether the voice functions found in the gong collection mimic the string voices found on the pratuokng or the other way round. Does this fact serve as a featured phenomenon to the actual appearance of re-invented musical instruments? Does it contribute to its sustainable appearance today?

Abstract:
This chapter analyses exhibitionary spaces dedicated to the aboriginal peoples of Taiwan. The first part of the chapter looks at two museums—the Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines (順益台灣原住民博物館‎) and the Ketagalan Culture Center (凱達格蘭文化館‎)—that reflect two different agendas. The first is a private museum opened in 1994 around the personal collection of the Shung Ye Foundation, a philanthropic arm of the Shung Ye Group, a distributor of Mitsubishi products in Taiwan. The second is state-funded and was a pet project of former president Chen Shui-bian. Although the motivations for their founding may be different, both museums project the view that aboriginal cultures are important features of a united multiethnic nation. The second part of the chapter focuses on two theme parks centered on aboriginal cultures, one of which is highly commercialized and the other more academic in orientation. These parks represent simultaneously the commodification and politicization of ethnic cultures.
