Abstract:
This article proposes a graphic synthesis in the form of an illustration of somato-visceral correspondences achieved through a literature review of existing publications about dermatomes, myotomes, sclerotomes and viscerotomes. Fundamental concepts of osteopathy, correspondence of the medullary levels of innervation between the somatic structures and visceral organs is proposed in the form of a graphic synthesis. The goal of research. Relevant studies in French, English and German language have been collected. Dedicated search engines, Google Scholar, JSTOR Search, MEDLINE / Pubmed, Web of Science have been consulted as well as all specifi c medical libraries accessible on-line and on-site. Synthesis of collected data has been used to design correspondences between dermatomes, myotomes, sclerotomes and viscerotomes.Conclusion. The aim of this systematic review suggests a graphical synthesis correspondence of the innervation areas in human body between somatic structures and visceral structures and organs. These illustrations of a neurological correspondence between structures highlight the principles of global management for a person carrying somatic dysfunctions. Further experimental investigations using imaging tools and current technological advances should help to a more complete elaboration of neurological correspondences between structures as well as understand the process of osteopathic therapy effectiveness.

Abstract:
The paper tells the story of Ivan Bunin’s correspondence with Vadim Rudnev (dating from 1933-1934), managing editor of the Paris-based Russian émigré journal Sovremennie zapiski. Judging by the quoted letters, Bunin did not sever ties with the journal, despite what many researchers suggest; nor did he plan to snub the editors by refusing to send in new works. If we accept Bunin’s own words about his very fastidious approach to proofreading, it becomes clear why he barely published any new works in the period from 1934 to 1936. It was in those years that the Berlin-headquartered publishing company Petropolis printed his collected works in 11 volumes. It was to become Bunin’s last fundamental publication, comprising works entirely proofread by the writer himself. It is only natural that such a humungous effort had affected the ageing writer’s productivity, and Bunin simply could not generate new material for the journal.

Carawan, Mark. "The collected works of J.M. Falckenburg." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/15535.

Full text
Abstract:
Jacob Milich Falckenburg has on rare occasions in the twentieth century received recognition in notes and scholarly afterthoughts for his Latin verse retelling of the Apollonius of Tyre romance and dedicatory poem to Queen Elizabeth in 1578. In his own time Falckenburg, as a member of a wide circle of Central European humanists, served as a courtier and agent for the Holy Roman Empire and composed a range of verse which saw print in cities from Gdansk to London between 1564 and 1579. Prior to this study, the known facts of Falckenburg's life and works have been restricted to information gleaned from a limited number of the poet's printed works. Collected here are Jacob of Falckenburg's known works, together with a biographical sketch and a brief survey of his printed works. The biography of Jacob of Falckenburg traces the poet's movements from his early years in Wittenberg and Breslau, as a member of an important humanist family, through Vienna, Paris and Antwerp to London, while the survey of his printed works demonstrates that in his nearly twelve thousand lines of poetry Falckenburg has often relied on adaptation in his treatment of diverse subjects. Falckenburg's poetry is shown to include a number of epithalamia and celebratory poems, including three on Henri, King of Poland, while his religious works consist of paraphrases of scripture and sacred meditations. Jacob's magnum opus is the Historia Divi Apollonii, a Latin hexameter version of the Apollonius of Tyre romance. The importance of this poem in the context of the Apollonius romance's Latin and English traditions and, in particular, as a likely source for the play Pericles, Prince of Tyre, has warranted in this study a detailed discussion and commentary.

Abstract:
This commentary focuses on my photographic and film work that takes the relationship between children and computers as its theme. The text opens with a description of my earliest digital research project In a Shaded Place (1995), which explored the introduction of computers into early learning. I then go on to discuss a series of projects that focus similarly on the relationship between children and digital culture from this period to 2014. Over a series of chapters I discuss my own practice in relation to the early impact of the computer on photography, the impact of the introduction of the Internet on children and the development and impact of computer gaming on young people. I also discuss the enduring interest in childhood as a theme in photography, reflecting on the work of key artists, curators and writers working in my field whom I have exhibited and been published alongside over the period covered by the commentary. All of the projects included here address the question: How has the computer (and, by extension, the information age) affected the ways in which we describe and depict ourselves? Over the period covered by this commentary there has an unprecedented shift in the understanding of the role and function of photography. There has also been a marked shift in attitude to the representation of the child in society. Both of these subjects have deeply informed my practice. I conclude my commentary with a description and analysis of my 2009 project The Skater and a description of what I perceive as my own contribution to new knowledge, which includes the impact of my work on the understanding of the representation for the child in photography and also its implied critique of the impact of the computer on photography at the beginning of the digital age.

Vrachnas, Barbara. "Remapping Ouida : her works, correspondence and social concerns." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9465.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the popular and non-canonical Victorian novelist Ouida (Maria Louise de la Ramée) her relationship with her publishers and the reception of her works. In particular, through the study of published and unpublished correspondence, as well as nineteenth century periodicals, certain views concerning the writer and her oeuvre will be revised and amended, especially in the context of social and moral standards, anticipated from the female fictional character and the artist, the writer. The first chapter will concentrate on Ouida’s correspondence and will argue that the author’s reputation and sales were not only damaged by her ostensibly immoral plots but also as a result of her publishers’s differing priorities. In order to delineate the content of these ‘indecent’ novels and later the impact they had on reviewers, critics and readers, as well as Ouida’s writing, four of her three-decker novels have been selected for critical discussion. Strathmore (1865) is discussed in relation to sensation fiction and marriage law and Folle-Farine (1871) as an examination of inequality between classes and genders. Francis Cowley Burnand’s parody Strapmore (1878) is then read as a critical account of and response to Ouida’s ideologies. The thesis will then examine the controversy surrounding Moths (1880), and In Maremma (1882) will be read as a response to this controversy through its relation to mythology and the representation of the artist. The analysis of these novels and Ouida’s correspondence with her agent and publishers will trace the path that led to the gradual decline in her reputation and the posterior obscurity of her works.

Abstract:
From the introduction: [...]

Kim, Se Ryeong. "Identifying the factors that affect mistrust and uncertainty in front-end performance of Korean MNEs." Thesis, Edge Hill University, 2019. http://repository.edgehill.ac.uk/11028/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates and identifies the factors that affect mistrust and uncertainty when Korean industrial multinational enterprises (MNEs) generate new ideas in the front-end phase of new product development (NPD) processes. Specifically, this study focuses on the process of applying research data to support the generation and development of new products. Current research indicates that many companies frequently experience difficulties in this regard. This study comprises a large body of empirical study-centred research. It collates multiple interviews with research-based teams (consisting of planners as well as marketers and lifestyle researchers) and practice-based teams (i.e. designers and engineers) of leading multinational companies in the smart electronics and automobile industries. A primary outcome of the research is the specification of key constructs relating to mistrust and uncertainty during the application of research data in the process of selecting new ideas within the front-end of the NPD process, which appear to be linked to three factors: (i) a lack of common language (perspectives and approaches related to data and information when obtaining insights) between diverse expertise groups, (ii) a lack of appropriate communication channels between different functional groups, and (iii) a lack of productive tactics in using internal information. This research aims to enrich NPD studies by presenting the validity of the existing theory with detailed practical examples and to find distinctive new knowledge by identifying emerging issues from recent NPD processes in the industry. Furthermore, this study establishes an idea generation framework that will potentially enable MNEs to use their research data more effectively when developing real products and to better perform cross-functional tasks.

Full text
Abstract:
For every famous author of the twelfth-century renaissance, there are numerous lesser-known writers. Despite being overshadowed by more brilliant scholars or those closer to the centre of important events, their voices add depth to the study of the intellectual history of this period. A founding member of one of the earliest Premonstratensian houses; a highly-educated and prolific author, much in demand as a hagiographer; and a vigorous defender of the clerical order, Philip of Harvengt is one such writer, and a worthy subject for study. This thesis examines two bodies of Philip’s works – his letters and his hagiographical writings – analysing the predominant and recurrent concerns and ideals expressed in them, and the means by which they are expressed. The letters are carefully crafted works, examples of the literary labour which Philip writes is incumbent upon the cleric. The first part of this thesis approaches these letters in chapters on four themes: the role of the ecclesiastical prelate; the importance of learning; the relationship between religious orders; and Philip’s use of the motif of friendship. His hagiographical works, too, are examples of literary artistry, to move as well as to educate the audience. In the second part of the thesis, these will be discussed individually, with the first chapter analysing his vita of Oda, a nun attached to his own house, whom he portrays as a martyr. The succeeding chapters consider Philip’s rewritings of earlier vitae, and show how he managed his sources in order to produce vitae depicting their subjects according to his ideal model of sanctity. Philip’s letters express concerns shared by contemporaries, reflecting anxieties surrounding roles and ideal forms of living in a period immediately following the first fervour of religious renewal. His hagiographies articulate ideals of sanctity, clarifying these when they are not made sufficiently explicit in earlier works, for the better edification of an audience pursuing this vita perfecta. Both letters and hagiographies are designed to exhort and instruct the reader or listener: above all, Philip is a teacher.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper was written for The philosophy of Bertrand Russell, a volume of Paul Arthur Schilpp’s series the Library of living philosophers. In his letter of invitation of 18 November 1942, Schilpp proposed the title of the paper and also wrote: “In talking the matter over last night with Lord Russell in person, I learned that he too would not only very greatly appreciate your participation in this project, but that he considers you the scholar par excellence in this field.” Gudel sent in the manuscript on 17 May 1943. There followed a lengthy correspondence about stylistic editing proposed by Schilpp and Gudel’s own deliberation concerning revision. Before Gudel had submitted the final version, Russell had completed his reply to the other papers and decided that under the circumstances he would not reply to Gudel’s. When Gudel finally sent in the revised version on 28 September, he wrote to Russell attempting to change his mind about not replying. He undertook to disabuse Russell of his impression that what Gudel said would not be controversial, and emphasized his criticisms of Russell.

Abstract:
Abstract This question, of course, could arise only after the concept of “number” had been extended to infinite sets; hence it might be doubted if this extension can be effected in a uniquely determined manner and if, therefore, the statement of the problem in the simple terms used above is justified. Closer examination, however, shows that Cantor’s definition of infinite numbers really has this character of uniqueness. For whatever “number” as applied to infinite sets may mean, we certainly want it to have the property that the number of objects belonging to some class does not change if, leaving the objects the same, one changes in any way whatsoever their properties or mutual relations (e.g., their colors or their distribution in space). From this, however, it follows at once that two sets (at least two sets of change able objects of the space-time world) will have the same cardinal number if their elements can be brought into a one-to-one correspondence, which is Cantor’s definition of equality between numbers.

Abstract:
The benefits of applying market demand models in engineering design have been well established. Arguably the most common approach has been to apply a random utility model, although any representation of market demand based on customers’ responses to surveys or in market situations can be used to this end. In practice, various methods have been used to collect market data through the use of surveys, typically based either on choices from among sets of alternatives or statements of willingness-to-pay. The applicability of the data collected has been limited, however, by the complexity of the relationships between market research methods and market demand models. The prospects of reusing an enormous amount of available market research data and increasing practitioners’ freedom in applying market research data to forecast market demand compel us to investigate the correspondence between market demand models. In this paper, we build on the recent work of Cook and Wissmann to demonstrate a bilateral correspondence between the popular multinomial logit model and Cook’s S-Model. Results from two independent case studies are presented showing that the utility function in a multinomial logit model may be reparameterized as a value function in the S-Model and vice-versa. The techniques demonstrated in this paper for defining direct comparisons between previously incompatible market research methods and demand models provide the practitioner with powerful new capabilities for validating market models, fusing market models to expand customer-based trade spaces, and presenting results to decision-makers in familiar formats.

Abstract:
The present work focuses on the modeling of the thermal system composed of several modules, in which the general model of the system is built, which includes all its components in operation. The environment collected data in real time of the growth and decrease (temperature) curve of a soldering iron tool, under aspects of PWM variation - Pulse Width Modulation - of the signal. It is used as a representative model of device in industrial welding, in which it has similarities in key aspects of behavior. Through analysis and software assistance, the function of transferring the general plan was obtained, which showed an acceptable level of correspondence (86.04%) in non-linear systems. Based on the model discovered, a PItype controller - Proportional Integral - was designed, paying attention to the need for a low-level overshoot signal (6.08%) in order to obtain a response to the rapid stabilization step, rare in thermal systems. The PI was developed in order to generate an output in DC format (Duty Cycle format), since the raw data of the system were collected by varying this indicator at regular intervals of time. After the tests carried out in simulation, results were obtained that confirm that the developed control system is applicable and responds appropriately, being able to be optimized for applications.,

Full text
Abstract:
This resource toolkit has been produced by K4D in partnership with the Health Systems Team in the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Human Development Department and renowned global health systems expert Prof. Sophie Witter (Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh). The toolkit is aimed at FCDO’s network of health advisors, and policy and programme managers based in country offices and central teams. The purpose of this toolkit is to summarise and present key messages from the latest evidence on ‘what works’ for health systems strengthening (HSS) to help embed a stronger HSS approach into all of our work on health as outlined in FCDO’s position paper Health Systems Strengthening for Global Health Security and Universal Health Coverage (FCDO 2021). The toolkit draws extensively on more detailed pieces of work analysing the evidence in more depth, which were disseminated through the health network in FCDO (and previously the Department for International Development) between 2019 and 2022 titled Evidence Review of What Works for Health Systems Strengthening, Where and When? (Witter et al. 2021). This toolkit also links back to a multitude of resources and recorded sessions collected as part of K4Ds previous learning journey on HSS.

Abstract:
This paper compares the history of tax incentives in seven Latin American countries. It is an attempt to understand why countries enact tax incentive legislation; how countries measure the costs and benefits of such legislation; how such costs and benefits are viewed by the public; and what considerations have led to the repeal of such incentives. The information set forth below is the result of extensive interviews and correspondence with noted private and public sector tax experts in the countries reviewed. The information was collected over a two and one-half year period ending in September 2001.

Bernal, CArolina, and Razvan Vlaicu. Child Labor, Rainfall Shocks, and Financial Inclusion: Evidence from Rural Households. Inter-American Development Bank, August 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0005058.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines how rural households cope with climate change related rainfall shocks by re-allocating childrens time between domestic activities and school attendance. Households affected by an unanticipated rainfall shock face an inter-temporal trade-off between current household income and future potential earnings. Financial inclusion may mitigate or exacerbate the human capital impacts of rainfall shocks depending on whether it relaxes or constrains household budgets. The data come from a three-round panel household survey in rural Colombia collected between 2010-2016. The main findings are that rainfall shocks induce households to choose immediate benefits over long-run investments in education by increasing the incidence of child labor and household chores at the expense of school attendance. Over-indebtedness through pre-existing formal loans reinforces the likelihood that a child works due to rainfall shocks, whereas asset insurance, foreign remittances, and natural disaster aid mitigate or eliminate the shock-induced shift toward domestic activities and away from schooling.

Abbott, Pamela, Dickson Malunda, and Ismael Byaruhanga. Assessing the Impact and Scalability of Participatory Homegrown Programs on Reducing and Redistributing Unpaid Care Work among Women in Rwanda: A Case of Reseaux des Femmes' Unpaid Care Work Project in Rwanda: Baseline Report. Centre for Global Development, University of Aberdeen, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.57064/2164/21125.

Full text
Abstract:
This report provides a descriptive overview of the quantitative baseline data collected in January and February 2022 for a research project evaluating a complex social intervention to reduce and redistribute women’s unpaid care work (UCW) in Rwanda using homegrown solutions. The intervention aims to reduce and redistribute UCW undertaken by women in Rwanda's rural areas, thereby improving their quality of life and increasing their empowerment. The findings discussed in this report are from a survey of intervention and control households and 7-day time diaries completed by husbands and wives in each household, with some illustrative material from simultaneous qualitative research. The research design for the project is a cluster trial informed by critical realism (CRCT) , combining quantitative and qualitative research methods to explain what works for whom under what circumstances. The intention is not just to identify the changes that can be attributed to the intervention but to develop explanatory theories of why the changes took place (Danermark et al., 2019; Porter et al., 2017; Porter and O’Halloran, 2012). The purpose of a Working Paper at this stage of the project is mostly to describe the lives and subordination of rural women as revealed by the baseline survey and, in the process, to identify any differences between control and intervention groups which have occurred by chance and will need to be controlled statistically in the analysis of the final results.

Of Power and Learning: DistrictHeads, Bureaucracy, and EducationPolicies in Indonesia’s Decentralised Political System. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-wp_2022/111.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines the politics of education policies in a decentralised political system. Under what conditions does decentralisation promote learning-enhancing policies? Despite the numerous works that have been written on decentralisation and education, little is known about how politics influenced local education policies. To address this problem, this paper looks at the linkages between local politics, bureaucratic capacity, and the development of learning-enhancing policies in Indonesia’s decentralised political system. More specifically, it assesses how regional variation in the discretionary power of district heads over employment decisions in the state bureaucracy explains the variation in local education policies in four districts in Indonesia. The primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with political leaders, bureaucrats, district education councils, school principals, teachers, teacher organisations, parents, non-government and community-based organisations, journalists, academicians, and other relevant informants. Using Mill’s method of difference, the comparative analysis presented in this paper demonstrates that institutional constraints on the discretionary power of the district head over employment decisions in the state bureaucracy do matter for the development of learning-enhancing policies. Such constraints can pave the way for the development of the bureaucratic capacity required for governments to pursue learning-enhancing policies. Absent constraints on the discretionary power of district heads over employment decisions in the state bureaucracy, the extent to which districts implement learning-enhancing policies will depend on district heads’ commitment to student learning.

Carter, T. R., C E Logan, and H. A. J. Russell. Three-dimensional model of dolomitization patterns in the Salina Group A-1 Carbonate and A-2 Carbonate units, Sombra Township, Lambton County, southern Ontario. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/332363.

Full text
Abstract:
Dolomitization of carbonate rocks is a subject of considerable interest due to association with oil and gas reservoirs and Mississippi Valley Type ore deposits. Conceptual two-dimensional models of dolomitization are common in the literature, however numeric models supported by high quality data are rare to nonexistent. This paper presents three-dimensional (3-D) dolomitization patterns in the Salina Group A-1 Carbonate Unit and A-2 Carbonate Unit located in Sombra Township, Lambton County. The source data consists of percent dolomite measurements collected from 9727 drill cutting samples, stained with alizarin red, from 409 petroleum wells. Numerical interpolants of the percentage of dolomite versus limestone in the two formations are developed within the boundaries of lithostratigraphic formation layers derived from a 3-D geologic model of southern Ontario, published as GSC Open File 8795 (Carter et al. 2021b). The model was developed using Leapfrog© Works software with a 400 m grid resolution. Results show that increased proportions of dolomite vs limestone in both formations are spatially associated with the flanks and crests of pinnacles in the underlying Lockport Group carbonates, over which the B Salt has been dissolved, and the downthrown side of the Dawn Fault and Becher faults. In the A-1 Carbonate there is an increase in dolomite content over a minority of incipient reefs in the Lockport, and in the A-2 Carbonate Unit there is a gradational increase in dolomite content upwards from a basal limestone to 100% dolomite. The cross-cutting relationships of dolomite occurrence in the A-1 Carbonate on the flanks and crests of some pinnacles support a post-depositional burial diagenesis mechanism, consistent with previous interpretations. The pathway for the dolomitizing fluid was laterally through porous and permeable regional paleokarst in the underlying Lockport Group, uppermost Goat Island and Guelph formations, and upwards through the porous reefal carbonates of the pinnacles. Association of dolomitization haloes with dissolution features in halite of the overlying B Salt Unit further suggest that the dolomitizing fluids were also responsible for salt dissolution. The preferential association of dolomite with the Dawn and Becher faults suggest that movement of the dolomitizing fluid was also fault controlled. This project demonstrates the feasibility and merit of assignment and interpolation of attribute values constrained by lithostratigraphic layers in the regional 3-D geologic model of southern Ontario. Spatial associations of dolomite with other geological features are more clearly resolved than in a 2-D study.
