Abstract:
Introduction. Manufactured Colas are consumed universally as soft drinks. Evidence about the acid contents of Cola-beverages and its effects on teeth is rare.Aim. To assess (i) cola acidity and buffering capacityin vitro, (ii) tooth erosion after swishing with colasin vivo(iii) scanning electronmicroscopic effectson teeth of colas, and tooth-brush abrasion, and (iv) report aclinical caseof erosion from cola consumption.Materials and Methods. (i) We measured six commercially available pop “Cola beverages”, pH, and buffering capacities using a pH-Mettler Automatic Titrator, with weak solution of Sodium Hydroxide (ii) two cohorts, onewith teeth, the secondwithout teethrinsed with aliquots of Cola for 60 seconds. Swished cola samples tested for calcium and phosphorus contents using standardized chemical analytical methods (iii) enamel, dentine, and the enamel-cemental junction from unerupted extracted wisdom teeth were examined with a scanning electron microscope after exposure to colas, and tested for tooth-brush abrasion; (iv) a clinical case of pop cola erosion presentation, are all described.Results. Comparisons among pop colas testedin vitroreveal high acidity with very low pH. Buffering capacities in millilitres of 0.5 M NaOH needed to increase one pH unit, to pH 5.5 and pH 7 are reported. Rinsingin vivowith pop cola causes leeching of calcium from teeth; SEM shows dental erosion, and pop-cola consumption induces advanced dental erosion and facilitates abrasion.Conclusions. (i) Pop-Cola acid activity is below the critical pH 5.5 for tooth dissolution, with high buffering capacities countering neutralization effects of saliva; (ii) calcium is leeched out of teeth after rinsing with pop colas; (iii) SEM evidence explains why chronic exposure to acid pop colas causes dental frangibles; (iv) aclinical caseof pop-cola erosion confirms this.

AbstractAlthough it is often assumed that public workers have greater benefit protections than their private sector counterparts covered by the Employees Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, this paper finds that state and local governments – particularly those with generous cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs), fewer benefit protections, and financial pressures on the plan and the sponsoring government – cut COLAs for current workers and, often, for retirees. In most instances, these cuts were upheld by the courts. While the pace of COLA cuts has slowed, they are likely to reappear if plans come under renewed financial pressures.

Background. Since nutritional factors may affect bone mineral density (BMD), we have investigated whether BMD is associated with an index estimating the intake of soft drinks, fruits, and vegetables.Methods. BMD was measured in distal forearm in a subsample of the population-based Oslo Health Study. 2126 subjects had both valid BMD measurements and answered all the questions required for calculating aDietary Index= the sum of intake estimates of colas and non-cola beverages divided by the sum of intake estimates of fruits and vegetables. We did linear regression analyses to study whether the Dietary Index and the single food items included in the index were associated with BMD.Results. There was a consistent negative association between the Dietary Index and forearm BMD. Among the single index components, colas and non-cola soft drinks were negatively associated with BMD. The negative association between the Dietary Index and BMD prevailed after adjusting for gender, age, and body mass index, length of education, smoking, alcohol intake, and physical activity.Conclusion. An index reflecting frequent intake of soft drinks and rare intake of fruit and vegetables was inversely related to distal forearm bone mineral density.

Soft drinks can be a major source of sucrose, which may influence serum lipid concentration. We have examined the association between intake frequency of various types of soft drinks and the concentration of serum triglycerides (TG) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the cross-sectional Oslo Health Study. A total of 14 188 subjects of the altogether 18 770 participants of the study had data on intake frequency of colas and non-colas, with or without sugar. The population sample consisted of both sexes and 3 age groups: group1 (30 years of age), group 2 (40 and 45 years of age), and group 3 (59–60 years of age). In both sexes, HDL decreased and TG increased significantly (p < 0.001) with increasing intake frequency of colas. In contrast, no consistent associations were found between the reported intake of non-cola soft drinks and the serum lipids. We found no significant differences related to the reported presence or absence of sugar in the soft drinks. In multiple linear regression analyses, the colas vs. serum lipid associations prevailed (p < 0.001) after including 13 possible confounders: sex; age group; time since last meal; physical activity; intake of alcohol, coffee, cheese, fruit and (or) berries, and fatty fish; smoking; length of education; use of cholesterol-lowering drugs; and intake of non-colas. Thus, the self-reported intake frequency of colas, but not other soft drinks, was negatively associated with serum HDL, and positively associated with TG and LDL.

Coca-Cola has always been passionate about effectively reaching and engaging more customers. As one of the worlds largest producers of non-alcoholic drinks, Coca-Colas robust, innovative, and transformative demographic segmentation and marketing strategy are the primary factors that have contributed to the companys business success with young people and helped it grow sustainably across the globe and around the clock. Coca-Cola always keeps improving to meet the needs of everyone in the world. Although the demographic segmentation by age, affordability, and gender is already specific, clear, and direct, certain actions must be taken to address the new concerns of todays teenagers healthy lifestyle change and sugar-free tendency based on the marketing strategy of product, pricing, and promotion, including its vintage bottle, classic font, specialized logo, localized positioning, and social media. Coca-Cola should also make more efforts to create new solutions, for example, availability of sugar-free products, communication with customers, product placement, and package size reduction, to meet the rising challenges of the changing beliefs of youngsters globally.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The authors propose that the most appropriate measure of the degree of indexation in a union contract is the marginal elasticity of the average expected wage during the life of the contract with respect to unanticipated changes in the price level. They present estimates of this elasticity for 68 U.S. contracts negotiated between 1971 and 1983 with cost-of-living escalators. The average degree of indexation in the sample, .48, is considerably smaller than previous estimates of similar marginal elasticities because the estimation method more accurately incorporates caps, minimum COLAs, and the exact specification of the COLA clauses.

Abstract:
This research explores monopolistic behavior and anti-monopoly strategies within the soft drinks industry, focusing on a comparative analysis of Coca-Cola and Pepsi. The study highlights how duopoly dynamics impact pricing and competitiveness in the market. It delves into historical competition between these industry giants, particularly during World War II, shedding light on Coca-Colas strategic dominance. The paper emphasizes the influence of brand promotion on pricing, revealing the potential for higher costs in the industry. Additionally, it underscores the significance of examining the effects of duopoly on cola drink prices for antitrust considerations. The research offers practical suggestions to address these challenges. Recommendations include fostering product innovation, building strong brands, establishing strategic partnerships, implementing pricing strategies, and emphasizing cost control. These measures aim to enhance overall industry pricing and competitiveness. Moreover, the study addresses the difficulties newcomers face entering the soft drinks industry and suggests policy incentives, collaborative efforts, engagement with industry associations, and regional focus as solutions to mitigate barriers to entry. Lastly, the research advocates for regulatory oversight, competition promotion, consumer education, price transparency, diversified supply chains, and support for collaboration and innovation to safeguard consumer interests. These measures aim to maintain a fair and diverse soft drinks market.

Abstract:
We present a method for extracting verb + noun collocations from specialized corpora based on the lexical functions of the Meaning-Text Theory. Lexical functions offer a complete characterization of verbal collocations. They cover the three grammatical relations that obtain between a verb and its arguments and provide high-level semantic descriptors to represent the meanings of the common verbal collocates of terms. Our system uses morphosyntactic patterns to extract verb–argument relations from a parsed corpus of computer texts. We then apply two statistical tests to isolate the true collocations in the list of syntactically extracted combinations. While the better of the two statistical tests identifies collocations with a precision of 71 %, we argue that a semantic filtering of the combinations, based on their ability to be encoded as standard lexical functions, could achieve higher precision.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract A collaborative study was conducted on a method for the measurement of 19 low-level pesticide residues in soft drinks and sports drinks by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The pesticide residues determined were 2,4-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (2,4-DDE); 2,4-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (2,4-DDD); 4,4-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (4,4-DDE); 2,4-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (2,4-DDT); 4,4-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (4,4-DDT); 4,4-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (4,4-DDD); -endosulfan; endosulfan-sulfate; dieldrin; aldrin; ethion; chlorpyrifos; -endosulfan; malathion; methyl-parathion; -hexachlorocyclohexane (-HCH); -HCH; -HCH; and -HCH. Blind fortification solutions containing 4 different levels of pesticide residues (0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 g/L) were provided to 8 collaborating laboratories who used them to create test samples in 6 matrixes (also provided): 2 colas, a diet cola, a clear lemon-lime soft drink, an orange soft drink, and a sports drink. Reproducibility (RSDR) for all 19 pesticide residues in all matrixes ranged from 7 to 151 at the 0.1 g/L level, 11 to 121 at 0.5 g/L, and 14 to 67 at 1.0 g/L. Repeatability (RSDr), applicable to the diet cola and the sports drink, ranged from 1 to 76 for the 19 pesticide residues at the 0.1 g/L level, 9 to 38 at 0.5 g/L, and 9 to 38 at 1.0 g/L. Recoveries for the 19 pesticide residues in allmatrixes ranged from 77 to 645 at the 0.1 g/L level, 60 to 231 at 0.5 g/L, and 61 to 146 at 1.0 g/L. It is recommended that the method be accepted by AOAC as Official First Action with a limit of quantification (LOQ) equal to 0.5 g/L for 4,4-DDT; 2,4-DDT; 2,4-DDD; 4,4-DDE; 4,4-DDD; 2,4-DDE; aldrin; dieldrin; -endosulfan; endosulfan-sulfate; chlorpyrifos; and ethion, and an LOQ equal to 1.0 g/L for -endosulfan; -HCH; -HCH; -HCH; -HCH; methyl-parathion; and malathion.

Abstract:
Introduction: The transition from online to face-to-face classes in the Philippines necessitated vaccination against COVID-19 for the students to prevent its transmission. The country has yet to benefit from herd immunity given the Filipinos’ hesitancy to COVID-19 vaccine (CoVax). The objective of the study is to describe the attitude of the undergraduate physical therapy students toward CoVax and determine the correlation between attitude toward CoVax and vaccine hesitancy factors. Methods: A descriptive-correlational research design was used. A convenience sample of 1st year college freshmen (n = 13) was used in the study. A 5-point Likert scale was used to measure attitude toward CoVax and vaccine hesitancy factors. Pearson correlation was used to determine the correlation between attitude toward CoVax and vaccine hesitancy factors and paired t test to compare change in attitude toward CoVax before and after getting vaccinated. Results: Majority (62%) of the students expressed a neutral attitude toward CoVax before getting vaccinated. Among all factors, the students rated their confidence (4.31) with CoVax as high but were less confident (3.92) and complacent (3.31) about the vaccine. A negative attitude toward COVAX before vaccination showed a statistically significant relationship with CoVax confidence (r = -.565; n = 13; p = .004). There was a change in the attitude toward CoVax from neutral before vaccination toward acceptance after getting vaccinated; however, the change, .31, 95% CI [-.72-1.33], was not statistically significant t (12) = .652, p = 0.527. Discussion: Reducing complacency toward and improving confidence in CoVax must be done to improve the attitude of the students toward acceptance of the CoVax.

Abstract:
The article uses an online experiment to set a questionnaire to participants in order to investigate the effectiveness of status quo bias in peoples daily life based on the Coca-Colas real case in 1985. Since in 1985 Coca-Cola met the commercial failure because of the reformulation of new coke and ignore the effectiveness of status quo bias for consumers. By asking their preferences of two types of coke in different situations, the research tested the impacts almost each explanation of status quo bias on participants decision making of which type of coke to buy. The result shows that transition cost, uncertainty and loss aversion all influenced participants decision since most of the participants chose the coke classic instead of new coke. And the article deepened the research of the effectiveness of status quo bias in decision for consumption. Companies could learn from it in order to value the importance of status quo bias in order to avoid the happening of commercial failure, especially when they plan to do the reformulation. And consumers can based on it when they need to make purchasing decision.

Abstract:
Abstract State and local employees comprise a significant proportion of the workforce and are largely covered by defined benefit pensions. Many of these retirement plans have been facing funding gaps, but legal restrictions often prevent them from reducing benefits for current employees. However, retirement plans can reduce liabilities by changing cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs, which are commonly applied to benefits each year to allow retirees to maintain purchasing power in retirement. In this study, we examine the prevalence of COLAs in public sector retirement plans through original data collection for 49 plans in 30 states, which cover approximately 52% of public sector workers overall. Among these samples, on average 45% of workers each year experienced some change in COLAs between 2005 and 2018, with more than half of these workers experiencing negative changes. We consider stylized examples of public sector workers subject to reductions in COLAs to understand how COLAs may affect workers’ retirement decisions. Our analysis suggests that eliminating a 3% COLA could delay retirement of affected workers by approximately 4.5 months.

Abstract:
Background: The hemodynamic and metabolic correlates of specific sodas have not been extensively studied. We used data from the IPC cohort, a large cohort of presumably healthy individuals having a general medical work-up reimbursed by the French National Health Insurance, to determine blood pressure, heart rate, BMI, waist circumference, glycemia, and LDL-cholesterol according to soda drinking habits. A self-administered questionnaire recorded daily habits for drinking colas or taurine sodas, with a 3-grade scale (no daily consumption, average daily consumption of 1-4 drinks, average daily consumption >= 4 drinks. Because consumption of taurine sodas and colas strongly declined after 50 years, only individuals aged 50 years or less (n=26,127) were included in the present analysis. Results: Daily consumption of colas and taurine drinks was reported in 8614 (33%) and 657 (2.5%) individuals, respectively. Compared with non-drinkers, cola and taurine soda consumers were younger (37 vs 34 vs 29 years, respectively, P<0.001), more often male (54 vs 58 vs 73%), more often socially deprived (8% vs 10% vs 10%), and more often current smokers (23% vs 33%, vs52%). After adjustment for age, sex, education, social status, and smoking status cola consumption was associated with slightly but significantly elevated BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure and heart rate, with no difference for fasting glucose or LDL-c. Taurine soda consumers had significantly higher BMI, and a trend to higher systolic blood pressure. Conclusion: Daily consumption of colas was associated with a modest increase in hemodynamic risk factors and body mass index, and the association with taurine sodas was essentially similar. Overall, very high consumers (5+ drinks per day) had hemodynamic nd metabolic effects similar to those of milder daily consumers.

Abstract:
The effectiveness of displays is proven beyond doubt in impulse buying, however, the quantification of the effect has some differences of opinion. Role of retailers to enhance the salience of brands is a major influence in purchase decisions of mature product categories. Many researchers have emphasized the importance of POP (Point of Purchase) displays to stretch the salience high especially in low involvement products like soft drinks. Cola giants like Pepsi and Coca Cola have long been drawn in the war of displays in nearby local mom and pop stores called kirana shops in India. Many of these companies give POP materials free of cost to retailers and try to have shops selling only their products exclusively. However, a large number of shops still sell competing brands of colas. Cola companies have also given many visi - coolers (the transparent refrigerators in which the inside contents are visible to the consumers from a distance) to the shop keepers, free of cost. It’s expected that it will increase the sales of their brand and the shopkeeper is expected to keep only the company’s product for cooling/display and not that of competitors. This study is aimed at finding the behavior of retailers toward providing salience of a major cola brand through the display of its brands by visi coolers.

Abstract:
