AbstractAlthough it is often assumed that public workers have greater benefit protections than their private sector counterparts covered by the Employees Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, this paper finds that state and local governments – particularly those with generous cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs), fewer benefit protections, and financial pressures on the plan and the sponsoring government – cut COLAs for current workers and, often, for retirees. In most instances, these cuts were upheld by the courts. While the pace of COLA cuts has slowed, they are likely to reappear if plans come under renewed financial pressures.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to understand how two of Coca-Cola'scommercials, The Morning After and Handbag, manage and encode genusthrough a series of staging principles and genre conventions. This is studiedthrough a qualitative image analysis where the material is broken down andcompared to each other. Theories of representation, genus, genre conventionsand principles of mise-en-scène are presented and used to analyze the material. The essay resulted in insights into how genre conventions in combination withenvironmental aspects such as lighting, color selection and handling of propsare used to encode the films by stereotypical gender patterns. The resultunderlies an approach for creators active in visual mediums regarding howadvertising is coded by gender and its effects, but also opens for future studieson how this can be implemented in practice.

Abstract:
Title: How do the cheaper substitutes withstand the premium products? Level: Degree in Business Administration Author: Giancarlo Mancuso & John Gustafsson Supervisor: Jonas Kågström Date: Maj – 2012 Aim: The purpose of this paper is to investigate how cheaper substitutes hold up to premium products by comparing them to each other in a blind test suggested by previous research Ogenyi Ejye (1994). We want to know if there is a major difference between the cheaper versions and the premium products in accordance with previous research. Method: The research had been done in the form of a blind test. Four different Cola varieties and have been compared against each other using a survey to collect data. This form of testing applied to our online survey as well. Result & Conclusions: The conclusion of our study is that brands do affect us as consumers, both in a positive and negative way. We could clearly see that in the blind test between the premium products and the cheaper substitutes there was not much of a difference in taste. In the visual test we could clearly see a difference between the products. Furthermore this research has shown that our participants are willing to pay more than the actual retail price for this product in both the visual and blind test. Suggestions for future research: It would be interesting with further research to take the same participants and perform two different experiments on them. One could be a blind test and the second could be in a visual test. During which the participants are aware of what they taste to see if there would be a major difference between the results. It would also be interesting to see research done using WTA (Willingness to Accept) in this context.  Contribution of the thesis: Our research has shown that there is not a great difference between the tastes of the products. It has given further proof that the cheaper substitute products are delivering almost the same quality as the premium product, which shows how important it is to build strong brand equity. Key words: Brand, Brand Equity, Willingness to Pay, Consumer price perception, Price premium

The objective of the present work is to develop a study of abrasive wear a specific component of a grain harvester, the bars of unit threshing the combines. For this study it was designed and built a test bench that simulates two types of materials, an ABNT/SAE 1045 steel and an ABNT/SAE 1518 steel underwent a forced to wear an abrasive that simulates the size and condition of a grain at a accelerated rate. This bench is in turn composed of parts used in systems threshing on harvesters in order to bring the test closer to the real. The general condition of the abrasive was compared with the literature in order to obtain better data with respect to wear on the condition. After the wear test was designed to better characterize this wear, where it is noted that medium carbon steel (SAE 1045) had a good initial performance with respect to wear, however the material with manganese (SAE 1518) showed a better resistance at the end of the tests when compared to SAE 1045. Finally, the tests was conducted to validate the bench, and characterization of abrasive wear in relation to which it was possible to sense the increased wear of the samples was performed when adding the SiO2 abrasive to simulate rice hull.

The bee?s pollen is a product rich in essential nutrients to feed the bees. In the hive it goes through chemical processes and becomes the bee?s bread, of extreme importance for the growth of larvae. Currently, the use of pollen in the human?s cuisine has been increasing for its therapeutic properties, and by its use in the food industry. To produce quality pollen the hive needs to be healthy, and bees, like any other animal, are susceptible to various diseases, parasites and predators, which can affect their development and productivity. The The Brazilian Sac Brood (BSB) is one of these diseases, which in Brazil affects honeybee larvae. In apiaries of Rio de Janeiro state, a high mortality of larvae with symptoms similar to the BSB is occurring, and until now, there is no definite conclusion regarding the etiologic agent of this disease in the state. Therefore, the objectives of this study was to clarify two issues: 1) provide a mycological research, through a study case, of bees? bread samples, adult bees and bees? pollen in areas affected and not affected by the BSB, aiming the elucidation of its etiologic agent, 2) verify the hygienic quality of dehydrated pollen samples sold in Rio de Janeiro state. A total of 48 samples of bees? bread, 15 of adult bees and 12 of pollen were collected from endemic regions of the BSB. The samples were collected in the months before, during and after the period of the disease. The dehydrated pollen samples were also purchased in commercial stores of the state, totaling 27 samples. Fungal species enumeration (cfu g-1) was through decimal dilution method using general culture media and selective ones. The isolation frequency and relative density of species were determined. The toxigenic profile of strains was determined, as also the detection and quantification of aflatoxin B1 in bread and bees? pollen. The results obtained from the study case samples showed that the bees? bread was the best vehicle of contamination for the hive. It was also observed a high fungal counts and the presence of mycotoxins and entomopathogenic fungi such as Aspergillus flavus, A. niger aggregate and A. fumigatus, which cause a decrease of the immune response, leaving them susceptible to various diseases, including the BSB itself. Pollen dehydrated samples showed a high fungal contamination with 92% of the samples in unsatisfactory hygienic conditions according to legal standards. A total of 25% of the A. flavus strains showed to be aflatoxigenic. The high percentage of unhygienic samples combined with the presence of a large variety of fungal contaminants, including mycotoxin-producing species, evidences that the legislation needs to be updated so that it can be safely commercialized. It is considered that the whole line production of bees? pollen, since its extraction until its storage should be monitored in order to minimize risks to human health.

Abstract:
As concrete as science is, it is a subject matter that is often difficult to understand because of the multifaceted concepts and technical vocabulary that is deeply rooted in the essence of the subject matter. Frequently, advanced science is studied in a closed environment where access to experiences is limited. This lack of accessibility forces a need for a more tangible means to help learners develop and anchor theoretical constructs. The use of poetry in the science classroom may be one such way to inform, engage and enhance students' understanding of abstract and complex scientific concepts. The descriptive techniques that are shared by science and poetry allow for creative, critical, and metaphoric thinking. Public high school honors biology students from Morristown High School were enrolled as participants in this study. This study was two-fold; Part I focused on determining the impact of infusing science poetry into the biology curriculum. Results were analyzed using a Two-Tailed Independent t-Test at alpha=.05. Part II focused on the use of scientific poetic response as a summative assessment method to replace the traditional essay assessment. Results were assessed using a study-specific rubric and a Two-tailed Dependent t-Test for Paired Samples that compared each student's mean essay scores to their mean poetry scores at alpha=.05. Also, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient (r) was utilized to establish any relationship between essays and poetic response assessments. This research demonstrated that there are some intersections and interactions across science and poetry that may assist students in comprehension of difficult abstract scientific material. Science poetry appears to be a tangible means to help learners develop and anchor theoretical constructs. The use of poetry in the biology classroom can inform, engage and enhance some students' understanding of abstract/complex scientific theories, concepts, and technical vocabulary. Offering learners an opportunity to reveal their understanding of complex biological concepts through scientific poetic response may just in fact be the much-needed scientific conceptual metacognitive summative assessment that many students and teachers have come to need. It is recommended that future research be conducted with a larger and more diverse population to further confirm affirmation of this study.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to evaluate the influence of pre-selected raw materials and the procedural conditions used in the manufacture of carton packs of the company Cartig, Cartão e Artigos para Embalagem, Lda. The objective of this work was to improve the appearance of the final product, considering the quality and reliability of the products, for the customers. Initially, the chemical and morphological composition of three pre-selected different cardboards with different weights, namely, Barcelona 250 g∙m-2, Brazil 250 g∙m-2 and Brazil 225 g∙m-2, were determined. These cartons are part of the final carton package. Through the contact angle measurement technique, the performance of the above-mentioned cardboards was compared to different humidity conditions (40% and 80%) and temperature (≈20 ° C and 35 ° C) to evaluate the procedural conditions in the manufacturing of packages. Using the same technique, the glue performance and gluing performance of the cold glues, Euroflex 5119 and INDU C 2065, used in the backed gluing process of cardboards, and Aquence FB 7371 and Aquence FB 7362 used in the gluing process of the company packaging were studied. Also in this work, the properties and characteristics of cold glues used in the gluing and backed gluing processes were determined through pH, solids content, viscosity, as well as FTIR-ATR and TGA techniques. Thermal DCS analysis was applied only to the hot glue Technomelt Supra Ultra GA 3920 used in the gluing of packages. The physical-mechanical properties of the pre-selected cardboards were determined, being these fundamental for the characterization of the strength and quality of the material. The optimal drying time of the glue used in the gluing process of the company was determined by manufacturing tests, the study of moisture over time, to the cardboards China 200 g∙m-2 and Avelino Bastos 225 g∙m-2. The degree of adhesiveness was determined through the Pin Adhesion Test (PAT) to all glues and cardboards involved in the work. It has been found that the manufacturing conditions (temperature and humidity) greatly influence the results of the backed gluing, especially at low temperatures. In this dissertation, it is also concluded that the glue most favorable to the gluing process of the company is the glue Aquence FB 7371 and, in the process of back gluing is the Euroflex 5119, which impregnates less in the cardboards on conditions of high temperatures and reduced humidity (35ºC and 40%), avoiding to spoil the appearance of the packaging. Finally, comparing the three pre-selected cardboards, Brazil 250 g∙m-2 is the cardboard with the best characteristics, resistance properties, quality and glue/adhesion ratio. It is in conditions of low humidity and high temperatures that it has high angles of contact with the glues studied, maintaining a high adhesiveness and good performance.

This work tracks the formative processes of environmental educators that work with the perspective of transforming social-environmental relationships with the objective of bringing back the ?natural being?. It attempts to find the theoretical-methodological guidelines of an innovative pedagogical praxis. This was done by accompanying the educational experiences of subjects from traditional communities in the Southern region of the state of Rio de Janeiro (Costa Verde), who are continually educated in agroecology. Agroecology establishes relationships with environmental education when it discusses ecological actions from a productive and agricultural perspective, as a way of attaining social-cultural reorganization of these communities. The research is qualitative, along an ethnographic model, with a bibliographical review from an anthropological perspective, of formative processes, agroecology, environmental education, educational paradigms and theory of complexity. Based on experiences of immersion in ecological sites and indigenous villages, and detailed interviews with quilombola subjects and family farmers about education and the relationship with nature, the work presents and discusses experiences and routes that antagonize the hegemonic paradigm, defending the idea that, in order to construct ecological knowledge, one needs to revalue and renew proposals, principles and modes of action to allow the reconstruction of the world under new forms of society-nature relationships

Abstract:

Abstract:
Introduction: Maximal cardiac output (COmax) is one of the most important functional parameters related to cardiorespiratory capacity (VO2max) and physical fitness. In clinical medicine, low COmax values are a risk factor for imminent heart failure. Conversely, high COmax values are a prerequisite for achieving high performance in sports, especially in endurance disciplines. Methods: To determine the COmax, we used our own modification of the COmax calculation from the VO2max values obtained during the spiroergometric examination (Stork et al. - 1). Our work is based on the findings of Stringer et al (2), which documented a very close correlation between COmax values obtained by calculation and COmax values obtained by the classical method according to Fick's principle. Subjects: From our 20-year examination database, we included in this study 641 men (M) and 164 women (F) over 19 years of age who completed a stress test on a bicycle ergometer with a graded load to the maximum. To calculate COmax, we used the equation with which we have already worked in several of our earlier studies. We have divided the files into three groups according to different physical activity: group A included well-trained endurance-athletes, who had several years of sports training at the time of the examination. Group B included subjects who engaged in physical activity only in their free time without competing in any sports competition. Subjects with various health problems who either never played any sport at all or ended their sports career many years ago, were included in group C. Results: COmax in group M-A (n=462, COmax=28.38±4.47 l/min) was significantly higher than in groups M-B (n=143, COmax=19.4±3.7 l/min) and M-C (n=36, COmax=18.4±5.9 l/min). It was the same with the women's groups. COmax values in group F-A (n=58, COmax=20.7±3.7 l/min) were significantly higher than in groups F-B (n=88, COmax=12.8±2.3 l/min) and F-C (n=18, COmax=12.1±2.0 l/min). There were no significant differences in both M and F between groups C and D. The same findings were found when comparing maximal stroke volume (SVmax) values. Conclusions: Movement activity is a condition for the development and maintenance of the adaptive abilities of the cardiorespiratory system. The parameters measured in recreational sportsmen correspond to the average of a healthy average fit population. If physical activity is not part of a healthy lifestyle and, in addition, there are health problems (in our groups C obesity and resting and exertional chest pains are the most common), in many subjects from our groups C the COmax parameters are significantly below average and close to the level characterizing the NYHA-1 to NYHA-2 group according to cardiology classification. The results show, on the one hand, how important factor in health prevention is regular physical activity, and, on the other hand, the applicability of our modified method to determine non-invasively the maximum cardiac output. Abstract:
There is growing discontent with the conventional wisdom concerning economic policy. The unhappy fact seems to be that a stable macroeconomic environment may be necessary but not sufficient to coax the desired outcomes from liberalized financial systems. This paper reviews several promising extensions of the conventional model and discusses their policy implications.
