More businesses now decide to upgrade via expansion to digital platforms. As a famous and old brand, began in 2010, Coca-Cola’s moves in this field have been significant. This paper explains how Coca-Cola use digital platforms and benefits from that. This is unique because research papers about Coca-Cola in digital market are rarities. At the same time, this offers ideas or data that help other businesses to observe Coca-Cola in a more thorough perspective.

Abstract:
Background: Excessive consumption of cola beverages is accompanied by numerous public health risks. But besides these well-known adverse effects, recently, several medical articles have been published that show some indications for cola beverages in clinical practice like resolution of gastrointestinal or feeding tube obstructions, increasing bioavailability and palatability of other medications, rehydration and other uses in healthcare settings. These approaches are not without shortcomings and complications. Methods: In this systematic review we tried to explore these new uses for practitioners and also reemphasize on the most evidence-based complications of cola consumption like bone loss and metabolic and cardiovascular adverse effects in cases of misuse and overuse from both clinical and nutritional points of view via searching the PubMed database. Results: We chose 145 journal articles from the most relevant ones plus 30 extra references and categorized their topics in two classes of medical uses and adverse effects. Conclusion: It could be stated that cola beverages have demonstrated interesting uses and benefits in medicine but their use should be regulated as strict as possible.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A mare aged 9 years underwent surgical correction of a small intestinal volvulus using a side-to-side, hand-sewn jejunocecal anastomosis. Nine months after the jejunocecostomy, the horse developed colic signs and ultrasonographic examination revealed gas in the large colon in the upper right flank region and several enlarged loops of the small intestine in the lower right flank area. The differential diagnosis was right dorsal displacement of the large colon or small intestinal strangulation. The exploratory celiotomy found epiploic foramen entrapment (EFE) of the jejunocecostomy anastomosis, including parts of the distal jejunum and cecum. Manual reduction of herniation of the bowel in the epiploic foramen (EF) was impossible and the horse was euthanized. The postmortem gross finding revealed the enlarged edematous at the distal end of the jejunum and the initial body portion of the cecum had passed into the EF in the right-to-left (antegrade) direction. To the authors’knowledge, this is the first report of the antegrade epiploic foramen entrapment of a jejunocecostomy bowel part and this may be one of the complications encountered during the long-term survival period of a surgical jejunocecostomy in horses.

Abstract:
Spontaneous perforation of the collecting system constitutes a rare entity masked by the presentation of a typical renal colic. However, it should not be forgotten when managing patients with colic, since missed diagnoses may carry significant morbidity. We herein present a series of spontaneous perforation of the collecting system without an apparent obstruction site evident in helical CT urography. Four consecutive patients who presented with typical renal colic were initially subjected to KUB and renal ultrasound imaging and were ultimately diagnosed with perforation of the collecting system via contrast enhanced- helical CT urography. Despite thorough evaluation, the cause responsible obstructive was not discovered and an exclusion diagnosis of idiopathic collecting system perforation was assigned to all patients. Due to the rarity of a spontaneous perforation traditional retrograde urography was performed in an effort to identify the possible cause but was also unrevealing. All patients were successfully treated with endourological means. Perforation of the collecting system without an evident obstructive cause is a rare entity with obscure etiology. A reasonable but yet unconfirmed speculation is that of a transient obstruction capable of a significant increase of intraluminal pressures.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of tachycardia associated with abdominal pain in horse with colic on echocardiographic measurements. For this purpose, 20 horses were selected for this study; from which 10 healthy horses were randomly selected (control group), and 10 diseased horses exhibiting the clinical signs of flatulent colic referred to the hospital of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Mansoura University, Egypt. Cardiac functions were evaluated using M- mode echocardiography for measurement of the cardiac indices and functions. In horses with flatulent colic, there was a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in interventricular septal thickness at end- systole (IVSTs), left ventricular internal diameter at end- diastole (LVIDd), left ventricular posterior wall at end-diastole (LVPWd), stroke volume (SV), and ejection fraction (EF) compared with control group. However, there was a significant (P < 0.05) increase in left ventricular volume at end- systole (ESV) in comparison with control group. The results of the present study indicate that evaluation of cardiac indices and functions via echocardiography may be of great benefit for evaluation of clinical outcome of tachycardia associated with abdominal pain in horses.

Asian-Australasian Journal of Animal Sciences 33, no. 7 (July 1, 2020): 1156–66. http://dx.doi.org/10.5713/ajas.19.0274.

Abstract:
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of compound organic acid calcium (COAC) on growth performance, hepatic antioxidant status and intestinal barrier of male broilers under high ambient temperature (32.7°C).Methods: Nine hundred healthy one-d-old Cobb-500 male broiler chicks were randomly assigned into three groups with six replicates of 50 birds each. A basal diet supplemented with 0% (control), 0.4% and 0.8% COAC, respectively were fed to birds for 6 weeks. All treatments were under high ambient indoor temperature of 32.7°C, and had a constant calcium and available phosphorus ratio. Results: The results showed that, compared with control, the average daily gain of broilers in 0.4% and 0.8% was significantly increased and the ratio of feed to gain in in 0.4% and 0.8% was significantly decreased at 1 to 21, 22 to 42 and 1 to 42 days of age (p<0.05). Compared with control, 0.8% COAC slightly decreased (p = 0.093) the content of malondialdehyde in liver at 42 days of age while 0.4% COAC significantly decreased (p<0.05) the activity of alkaline phosphatase. Furthermore, 0.4% COAC significantly enhanced the intestinal barrier function via increasing jejunal and ileal ocln transcription, promoting jejunal mucin 2 transcription at 42 days of age (p<0.05), and decreasing jejunal toll-like receptor 2 (TLR-2) and ileal TLR-15, inducible nitric oxide synthase compared with control group (p<0.05). Whereas, no significant differences on the transcription of interleukin-1β in jejunum and ileum were observed among three treatments (p>0.05). Overall, heat stress caused by high natural environment temperature may induce the damage to hepatic antioxidation and intestinal barrier. Conclusion: Dietary inclusion of COAC can improve the tolerance of broilers to thermal environment through the modification of antioxidative parameters in liver and the mRNA expression of genes in intestinal barrier, resulting in an optimal inclusion level of 0.4%.

Abstract:
Colic is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in the endurance horse. Detection of ileus may promote earlier intervention, preventing progression to colic. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a 50 mile (80.46 km) endurance ride on duodenal motility in endurance horses using trans-abdominal (duodenal) ultrasonography, and compare duodenal motility to gastrointestinal motility as assessed by gastrointestinal auscultation. 29 horses competing in five different 50 mile rides were included in this prospective study. Signalment, experience level, and ride performance data were recorded. Physical examination findings were recorded before and at completion of the ride. Trans-abdominal ultrasonography was performed before and within 90 min of completion of the ride to assess duodenal contractility. Duodenal motility assessed via ultrasonography decreased from before to after the race in horses undergoing ultrasound evaluation within 60 min of completion (P=0.03). Gastrointestinal motility assessed via auscultation decreased significantly after the race (P=0.03). Duodenal motility was negatively correlated with physical examination findings of dehydration and altered metabolic status. These findings indicate that gastrointestinal motility in horses is decreased by endurance exercise. Ultrasonography appears to be a useful method for objective assessment of motility in endurance horses.

Abstract:
It is unclear whether sugar sweetened beverages bypass regulatory controls of food intake (FI) in boys. The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of isovolumetric preloads (350 mL) of a fruit-flavoured drink (154 kcal), cola (158 kcal), 1% M.F. chocolate milk (224 kcal), and water (0 kcal) on subjective appetite and FI in boys aged 9–14 years. On four separate mornings, boys consumed one of the preloads in a random order; subjective appetite was measured at 15 min intervals, and FI was measured via an ad libitum pizza lunch at 60 min post-beverage consumption. In the 32 boys (age: 11.8 ± 0.3 years), FI was reduced (p < 0.001) after cola (940 ± 46 kcal) and chocolate milk (878 ± 41 kcal) compared with the water control (1048 ± 35 kcal) and after chocolate milk compared to the fruit drink (1005 ± 44 kcal). Cumulative FI after the fruit drink was greater than the water control (1159 ± 44 vs. 1048 ± 35 kcal; p = 0.03). Average appetite was not affected by the treatment, but the cola treatment resulted in greater fullness (p = 0.04) and lower prospective food consumption (p = 0.004) compared with the fruit drink. In conclusion, chocolate milk and cola suppressed next-meal FI at 60 min, while fruit drink increased cumulative FI (beverage + next meal) over 60 min in boys. Results from this study suggest that beverage composition is an important determinant of FI suppression in boys.

Abstract:
Since the aurora of civilization, urolithiasis has plagued humans. Defective drainage due to urinary tract obstruction at the narrowest part (ureterovesical junction, ureteropelvic junction, and near the pelvic brim) via stones will eventually cause the agonizing renal colic pain. Therapeutic managements of urolithiasis to relief acute colic pain are the primary objective. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the most commonly used drugs as suggested by many studies. It is very important to consider side effects of the drugs used in the treatment of colic pain. In order to preserve renal function and to relief obstruction, medical expulsion therapy are used for ureteral calculi as a conservative management. These medications will aid the passage ureteral calculi, an area that currently seems to be a field for continuous investigation. The Aim of this Study is to compare renal biomarkers before and after Lithotripsy and to evaluate the effect of Tamsulosin on these biomarkers in patients with ureteral stones. We concluded that, there were significant differences in the clinical outcomes obtained after using tamsulosin for 14 days in patients with ureteral stones who underwent lithotripsy compared with those patients who were not used tamsulosin; the levels of KIM-1, andserum urea were decreased significantly (p value <0.05) while the levels of ALP and serum sodium show an improvement when compared to patients who were not used tamsulosin but it's results were statistically not significant

Abstract:
Critics have long accused food and beverage companies of trying to exonerate their products from blame for obesity by funding organisations that highlight alternative causes. Yet, conclusions about the intentions of food and beverage companies in funding scientific organisations have been prevented by limited access to industry’s internal documents. Here we allow the words of Coca-Cola employees to speak about how the corporation intended to advance its interests by funding the Global Energy Balance Network (GEBN). The documents reveal that Coca-Cola funded and supported the GEBN because it would serve as a ‘weapon’ to ‘change the conversation’ about obesity amidst a ‘growing war between the public health community and private industry’. Despite its close links to the Coca-Cola company, the GEBN was to be portrayed as an ‘honest broker’ in this ‘war’. The GEBN’s message was to be promoted via an extensive advocacy campaign linking researchers, policy-makers, health professionals, journalists and the general public. Ultimately, these activities were intended to advance Coca-Cola’s corporate interests: as they note, their purpose was to ‘promote practices that are effective in terms of both policy and profit’. Coca-Cola’s proposal for establishing the GEBN corroborates concerns about food and beverage corporations’ involvement in scientific organisations and their similarities with Big Tobacco.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTObjectives:Traditionally, patients have to wait until assessed by a physician for opioid analgesia to be administered, which contributes to delays to analgesia. Western Hospital developed a protocol enabling nurses to initiate opioid analgesia prior to medical assessment for selected conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of this protocol on time to first opioid dose in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with renal or biliary colic. Methods:This was an explicit medical record review of all adult patients with an ED discharge diagnosis of renal or biliary colic presenting to a metropolitan teaching hospital ED. Patients were identified via the ED data management system. Data collected included demographics, condition, triage category, time of presentation, whether analgesia was nurse-initiated or not, and interval from arrival to first opioid analgesic dose. The narcotic drug register for the relevant period was also searched to cross-check whether opiates were doctor- or nurse-initiated.Results:There were 58 presentations in the nurse-initiated opioid analgesia group and 99 in the non-nurse-initiated analgesia group. Groups were reasonably well matched for gender, triage category and time of presentation, but there was a higher proportion of biliary colic in the non-nurse-initiated analgesia group. Median time to first analgesic dose was 31 minutes in the nurse-initiated group and 57 minutes in the non-nurse-initiated analgesia group (effect size, 26 minutes; 95% confidence interval 16-36 min;p< 0.0001]. There were no major adverse events in either group. Conclusion:A nurse-initiated opioid analgesia protocol reduces delays to opioid analgesia for patients with renal and biliary colic.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This report describes a horse presenting ileal impaction that went through a right flank laparotomy procedure while standing. The decision to use this technique was made under the influence of several factors: the patient exhibited a calm temperament and demonstrated responsiveness to the analgesic treatment for pain control; the abdominal lesion was amenable to correction by a standing right flank approach. Also, the owner reported financial problems. Ileal obstruction was relieved successfully, and the horse recovery was satisfactory. This case highlights that, in specific cases of colic syndrome, the use of surgical procedures in the standing position might be a viable option and promote fast recovery.

Abstract:
Background: Acute pain is a common presentation in the Emergency Department (ED) and inadequacy in its treatment can lengthen stay. Earlier analgesia use and discharge has been associated with positive patient experiences and improved pain management. Validated ‘fast-track pathways’ to aid physician decision making in analgesic administration is associated with decreased waiting times in renal colic diagnoses. Aim Statement: Our aim was to create an order set, for an approach to patients with acute pain, to reduce median time from point of triage to analgesia. We sought to reduce median time by 15 minutes, for ED patients with renal colic in the three months after implementation as compared to three months before. Measures & Design: We used a literature review and comparison to existing order sets at other EDs to design our draft. We focused our evaluation on patients with renal colic. We underwent multiple revisions based on stakeholder feedback and educated both physician and nursing teams about the order set. The utilization, however, was at physician discretion. We implemented the order set on March 30, 2017. After three months, an electronic retrospective chart review identified patients with a final renal colic diagnosis. For each patient, we captured triage time using electronic records and time to analgesia with the medication cart. Utilization of order sets was confirmed via manual chart audit. Evaluation/Results: A run chart showed worsening times after the intervention. Median time to analgesia in minutes, 3 months prior (n = 90) and post (n = 93) intervention, increased from 228 to 310 minutes, although the range was very large. Chart audits demonstrated a considerably low uptake of the order set with a small gradual increase from 0% to 20% over the 3-month period. Discussion/Impact: There was insufficient uptake of the Acute Pain order set preventing impact on time to analgesia. Changes in occupancy likely contributed to the worsening times. There was an increase in utilization over the 3-month period and could be due to increased awareness. This demonstrates that interventions require more than implementation to be effective. Difficulties in implementation were due to the document not being readily available. We have organized the nursing staff to attach order sets onto charts based on triage assessment and will re-assess with another PDSA cycle after this intervention.

Abstract:
Background: Collagenase is a type of proteolytic enzyme that specifically hydrolyzes native collagen with a three-dimensional helical structure. The structure and properties of collagenase vary with different sources and types. In addition to the well-characterized Clostridium collagenase, other collagenases are largely unknown. Various gene and protein databases have been widely used to mine novel functional genes in the genome. Gene mining and sequence analysis are effective methods for studying these enzymes. Objective: The present study aimed to understand the molecular, structural, and functional characteristics of collagenase from Bacillus cereus MH19 using a bioinformatics approach. Method: Based on the three-generation sequencing PacBio technique, Sequencing the Bacillus cereus MH19 genome. Function annotation is completed by blasting genes with different databases. Collagenases were investigated based on the physiochemical properties, phylogenetic relation, and domain architecture. The 3D structure model of the selected collagenase has been constructed and verified by SAVES. Results: There were 5 collagenases in Bacillus cereus MH19 with a molecular weight distribution ranging from 36-110 kDa. The analysis of evolutionary relationship between different collagenases indicating that the BCC000504 and BCC003388 collagenase gene sequences are closer to the typical collagenase genes ColG, ColA, and ColH, followed by BCC003615. The domain and function analysis showed that the collagenases BCC000504 and BCC003388 were similar to the collagenases ColG, ColA and ColH. BCC004271 was similar to BCC004272, and BCC003615 might be quite different from other collagenases. The secondary structure of collagenase was analyzed. The SAVES evaluation indicates that 3D structural modeling of the selected collagenase is acceptable. Conclusion: This study provides an overview of the molecular, functional, and structural characteristics of collagenase from Bacillus cereus MH19, which helps to understand the bacterial collagenase. The characterization of the collagenase will certainly expand the application range of collagenase.

Abstract:
Endovascular stent placement (ESP) for patient with spontaneous isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery (SIDSMA) is a widely accepted treatment option. However, failed percutaneous ESP is not uncommon and is one of the leading causes for laparotomy. We report a case of 63-year-old man with SIDSMA encountered failed antegrade recanalization via conventional transfemoral approach. We achieved recanalization in a retrograde fashion through middle colic artery using rendezvous technique and successfully placed self-expandable stents inside the dissected superior mesenteric artery. The patient recovered well after percutaneous ESP. We herein describe the transcollateral retrograde approach of percutaneous ESP for SIDSMA as an alternative option when conventional antegrade recanalization fails.

Abstract:
A 34-year-old man presented with acute severe left-sided abdominal and flank pain with associated postprandial nausea and vomiting. CT imaging revealed findings suspicious for a closed loop small bowel obstruction. Intraoperative findings were that of a left paraduodenal hernia (of Landzert) secondary to a mesenteric defect immediately posterior to the ascending branch of the left colic artery. The defect was closed via minilaparotomy. Unfortunately, his postoperative course was complicated by small bowel obstruction which required further laparotomy and adhesiolysis. The patient eventually made a good recovery. Here, we present a rare case of intestinal obstruction and discuss the aetiologies and management of this unusual phenomenon.

Uterine Torsion is a low casuistic condition in horses, which confers significant risk of life for pregnant mare and fetus. Occurring in the last gestational semester, the predisposing factors are not well defined, but the fetal and maternal characteristics stand out. Easily confused with Colic Syndrome due to similar clinical signs, an assertive assessment during transrectal palpation can differentiate and even define degrees of uterine torsion. Correctable by different techniques, the prognosis changes according to the variables in each case. The objective of this study is to report a clinical-surgical case of a mare that went through laparotomy surgery via the right flank to correct uterine torsion, at Hospital Veterinário Equicenter.

Abstract:
Abstract Background In the case of esophageal cancer patient whose stomach is not available for reconstruction, we had been using pedicled jejunum for lower esphageal cancer or right colon reconstruction as an alternative. However, high incidence of postoperative anastomotic leakage regarding insufficient blood supply was a great distress. We started the unique reconstruction technique using terminal ileum and right colon with preserved ileocolic vessels in 2011. Based on our experience, we considered benefits of our method. Methods After esophagectomy and lymphadenectomy, the ascending colon was mobilized. The mid colic, right colic (if exist) and ileocolic vessels, as well as marginal vessels of terminal ileum, were preserved, the ileum was cut at the point approximately 20–30cm from the ileum end. The final ileal artery and vein may be ligated and cut, if necessary. The pedicled ileo-colon was, then, carefully lifted isoperistaltically via subcutaneous route. Esophagoileostomy was usually performed by functional end to end anastomosis. Additional anastomoses were performed by Billroth II or Roux en Y method. Results In total of 383 patients who were underwent transthoracic esophagectomy between 1998 and 2017, 15 pedicled jejunum (J), 4 traditional right colon (C) and 6 ileo-colon preserved ileocolic vessels (IC) were used for reconstruction. The incidence of esophagoileostomy-related complications were 6.7% (1/15) in J, 50.0% (2/4) in C and 33.3% (2/6) in IC. One in IC showed ileal necrosis caused by sclerotic obstruction on the root of ICA, then remained right colon was used for free flap salvage reconstruction. Two in C suffered from pneumonia at early post-operative days, probably because of microaspiration of colic bacterium, interestingly, there was no caces of pneumonia in IC. In addition, the subcutaneous space was occupied only with the ileum, therefore the antesternal skin bloating was not bulky. Conclusion The advantages of our technique are; i) less anastomotic complications, ii)possibility of less aspiration pneumonia, iii) better cosmetic appearance, and iv) no microvascular surgery required. Our technique could be used as the standard method of reconstruction after esophagectomy for patients in whom stomach is not available. Disclosure All authors have declared no conflicts of interest.

CoLa x Fe 2-x O 4 (x = 0.00, 0.05 and 0.1) nanoparticles were prepared simply by a modified citrate precursor route. Effects of La -substituting level on the their magnetic properties were investigated on the basis of the structural analysis. The thermal evolution of the precursor, as well as the microstructure of as-prepared products were studied by means of a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. The magnetic properties of the as-prepared samples were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). It was found that the magnetic properties were dependent on many factors such as La -substituting level, particle size and microstructure. The observed saturation magnetization decreased with increasing La content, whereas coercivity exhibited reverse behavior.

Abstract:
Background. Gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157 therapy in rats compensated irremovable occlusion of various vessels and counteracted the consequent multiorgan dysfunction syndromes by activation of the corresponding collateral bypassing loops. Thus, we used BPC 157 therapy against the irremovable occlusion of the end of the superior mesenteric vein. Methods. Assessments, for 30 min (gross recording, venography, ECG, pressure, microscopy, biochemistry, and oxidative stress) include the portal and caval hypertension, aortal hypotension, and centrally, the superior sagittal sinus hypertension, systemic arterial and venous thrombosis, ECG disturbances, MDA-tissue increase, and heart, lung, liver, kidney and gastrointestinal tract, in particular, and brain (cortex (cerebral, cerebellar), hypothalamus/thalamus, hippocampus) lesions. Rats received BPC 157 medication (10 µg/kg, 10 ng/kg) intraperitoneally at 1 or 15 min ligation time. Results. BPC 157 rapidly activated the superior mesenteric vein–inferior anterior pancreati-coduodenal vein–superior anterior pancreaticoduodenal vein–pyloric vein–portal vein pathway, reestablished superior mesenteric vein and portal vein connection and reestablished blood flow. Simultaneously, toward inferior caval vein, an additional pathway appears via the inferior mesenteric vein united with the middle colic vein, throughout its left colic branch to ascertain alternative bypassing blood flow. Consequently, BPC 157 acts peripherally and centrally, and counteracted the intracranial (superior sagittal sinus), portal and caval hypertension, aortal hypotension, ECG disturbances attenuated, abolished progressing venous and arterial thrombosis. Additionally, BPC 157 counteracted multiorgan dysfunction syndrome, heart, lung, liver, kidney and gastrointestinal tract, and brain lesions, and oxidative stress in tissues. Conclusion. BPC 157 therapy may be specific management also for the superior mesenteric vein injuries.

Abstract:
Middle mesenteric artery has been described in 1923. We report the observation of a patient with an abdominal aortic aneurysm who had this rare artery arising from the anterior wall of the aneurysmal sac. His inferior mesenteric artery was occluded at its origin from the aorta and the middle and the distal colon was vascularized only by the middle mesenteric artery. Occlusion of this artery would have been necessary before endovascular repair of the aneurysm. We were concerned about the risk of colic ischemia after the occlusion of the middle mesenteric artery, so we abandoned this approach and operated on the patient via a laparotomy. Based on a case report, we here report a literature overview on the repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm in the presence of a middle mesenteric artery.

A Quarter Horse, a gelding aged 22, was subjected to a clinical examination for colic syndrome. During admission to the clinic, blood counts and ultrasound examination were performed. Ultrasound revealed abdominal masses and abundant accumulation of pleural (50 L) and abdominal fluid (100 L). Cytology was performed on the aspirated fluid. The patient was euthanized. The autopsy examination revealed abundant effusion and nodular masses on the peritoneum, omentum, lungs, heart, and mediastinum. A diagnosis of epithelioid mesothelioma was made via histopathology and confirmed with immunohistochemistry; it showed positive antibodies against cytokeratin (CK) and vimentin. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer in older horses. It is important to employ the correct differential diagnostics using the available methods, providing valid ante-mortem support to the clinical veterinarian and monitoring the territory using this species as a valid biological indicator.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTEpithelia are dynamic tissues that self-remodel during their development. During morphogenesis, the tissue-scale organization of epithelia is obtained through a sum of individual contributions of the cells constituting the tissue. Therefore, understanding any morphogenetic event first requires a thorough segmentation of its constituent cells. This task, however, usually involves extensive manual correction, even with semi-automated tools. Here, we present EPySeg, an open-source, coding-free software that uses deep learning to segment membrane-stained epithelial tissues automatically and very efficiently. EPySeg, which comes with a straightforward graphical user interface, can be used as a Python package on a local computer, or on the cloud via Google Colab for users not equipped with deep-learning compatible hardware. By substantially reducing human input in image segmentation, EPySeg accelerates and improves the characterization of epithelial tissues for all developmental biologists.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectivePublic health experts raise concerns about marketing unhealthy products to young people through television (TV) product placements. Coca-Cola brand appearances (product placements) reached a substantial child and adolescent audience in 2008, but additional brands now sponsor popular programming. We aimed to quantify child and adolescent exposure to food and beverage appearances since 2008.DesignIn 2015, we purchased Nielsen data on occurrences and child/adolescent exposure to food, beverage and restaurant brand appearances on US prime-time TV from 2009 to 2014, and analysed appearances by product category, company, brand and year. We compared exposure to appearances with exposure to traditional commercials for top brands.SettingNationally representative panel of approximately 20 000 TV-viewing households.SubjectsChildren (2–11 years) and adolescents (12–17 years).ResultsExposure to food and beverage brand appearances peaked in 2012 and declined through 2014. Whereas full-calorie soda brands dominated before 2012, other sugary drink and quick-serve restaurant brands contributed over one-third of appearances viewed by children in 2013 and 2014. Nine hundred and fifty-four companies had brand appearances from 2009 to 2014, but just four were responsible for over half of exposures: The Coca-Cola Company, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, PepsiCo and Starbucks. Approximately half were viewed on reality TV programmes and one sitcom. Each year from 2009 to 2013, brand appearance exposure exceeded traditional advertising exposure for at least one brand.ConclusionsDespite recent reductions in brand appearances viewed by young people, some unhealthy branded products continue to be marketed via this method. We suggest policy options to reduce child and adolescent exposure to such appearances.

Abstract:
Abstract Natural wood surface is hydrophilic and can easily absorb moisture. Inorganic nanometer-scale metal oxides can be controlled and fabricated on wood surface to serve as a protective coating. In the present study, a superhydrophobic surface consisting of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod array was successfully attached on wood via a cosolvent hydrothermal method at low temperature. By means of X-ray diffraction pattern and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the presence of the hexagonal wurtzite phase of ZnO was detected and characterized. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy showed uniform, large-scale rod-like ZnO crystal whiskers on the wood surface. The wettability of the wood surface after treatment became superhydrophobic, with a water contact angle of 153°. The prepared coating also showed an anti-contamination effect against milk, cola, soya sauces and coffee.
