Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to conduct national and cross-country analyses to provide insights about educator cognitive skills in literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving within Canada and across nineteen countries using the PIAAC data. MANOVA results of profession differences within Canada demonstrated that educators outperformed other professions in general programs, health and welfare, and services but underperformed the professions in science, mathematics, and computing in all three domains. MANOVA results of educator differences across countries showed that educators in Canada outperformed those in Denmark, Estonia, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom in literacy, outperformed the United Kingdom in numeracy, and outperformed Denmark, Estonia, and the United Kingdom in problem-solving. Finally, multiple regression analyses identified statistically significant indicators of Canadian educators’ literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving proficiencies. The results of this study reveal and suggest that the cognitive skills of Canadian educators have the potential to be enhanced. Keywords: teacher cognitive skills, literacy, numeracy, problem-solving in technology-rich environments L'objectif de cette étude était de mener des analyses nationales et internationales afin de fournir des informations sur les compétences cognitives des éducateurs en matière de littératie, de numératie et de résolution de problèmes au Canada et dans dix-neuf pays à l'aide des données de l'enquête PIAAC. Les résultats de l'analyse MANOVA des différences entre les professions au Canada ont démontré que les éducateurs surpassent les autres professions dans les domaines des programmes généraux; de la santé et du bien-être; et des services, mais qu'ils sont moins performants que les autres professions en sciences, en mathématiques et en informatique dans les trois domaines. Les résultats de l'analyse MANOVA des différences entre les éducateurs des différents pays ont montré que les éducateurs du Canada surpassent ceux du Danemark, de l'Estonie, de la Fédération de Russie et du Royaume-Uni en littératie, surpassent ceux du Royaume-Uni en numératie et surpassent ceux du Danemark, de l'Estonie et du Royaume-Uni en résolution de problèmes. Enfin, les analyses de régression multiple ont permis d'identifier des indicateurs statistiquement significatifs des compétences des éducateurs canadiens en matière de littératie, de numératie et de résolution de problèmes. Les résultats de cette étude révèlent et suggèrent que les compétences cognitives des éducateurs canadiens ont le potentiel d'être améliorées. La prise en charge des blessés de guerre en milieu hostile demande un haut niveau de compétence technique et de préparation, ainsi que la capacité de s’adapter rapidement aux conditions difficiles et austères imposées par cet environnement. Les médecins et les infirmiers militaires doivent bénéficier d’une préparation spécifique pour faire face à ces situations. Cet article cherche à décrire la manière dont cette préparation est effectuée, la place et l’usage des aides cognitives lors des séances de simulations et de leur formation au Sauvetage au combat. Cette enquête fait ressortir l’existence de grandes disparités d’accès à la formation continue et aux possibilités de maintien des compétences dans le domaine de l’urgence pour les médecins et infirmiers militaires interrogés, ce qui pourrait potentiellement compliquer la prise en charge des blessés de guerre en opération. L’utilisation d’une aide cognitive adaptée, lors de l’entrainement en situation simulée comme sur le terrain pourrait se révéler une plus-value pour tous les personnels de santé lors de ces prises en charge.

Qu’est-ce qui motive aujourd’hui les citadins à résider dans une banlieue vieillissante ? Pour le savoir, nous comparons la première génération de résidents d’une banlieue édifiée dans les années 1950-1960 à ceux établis plus récemment, sur la base de leurs représentations cognitives du quartier et de la ville, ainsi que leurs identités spatiales. La recherche d’espace et de tranquillité des pionniers côtoie dorénavant la recherche de centralité et d’accessibilité aux services disponibles dans l’agglomération. Dès lors, les résidents récents ont une représentation multipolaire de la ville. Les lieux de leurs activités sont interchangeables et s’étalent sur un territoire plus étendu mais moins homogène que les pionniers. En revanche, ces derniers conservent une représentation de type centre-périphérie et valorisent la familiarité des lieux fréquentés. Somme toute, il n’existe pas une mais des logiques de mobilité quotidienne qui dépendent fortement de significations issues autant des représentations cognitives de l’espace que des identités spatiales.

Abstract. Cette contribution a pour origine une commande des services du Grand Lyon qui cherchaient à évaluer des mobiliers urbains spécifiquement conçus pour les publics malvoyants et aveugles. La question du handicap comme problème d'aménagement urbain renvoie à l'autonomie des individus handicapés dans l'espace public. Les enquêtes mobilisées montrent comment le handicap est lié à la mobilisation des objets dans l'activité sociale. Dans l'activité sociale urbaine, les dispositions corporelles et cognitives des individus s'actualisent dans les dispositifs qui constituent les environnements urbains. Les situations de handicap seraient conséquentes à une rupture dans le rapport des dispositions aux dispositifs. Elles seraient d'abord privation, partielle ou totale, de l'accès aux objets qui autorisent, par leur fonctionnement, le déroulement des activités quotidiennes nécessaires à l'existence de chacun. Cette privation conduirait ensuite à la perte d'autonomie et augmenterait la dépendance à la sollicitude d'autrui. Dans cette perspective, la reconquête de lautonomie en situation de handicap apparaît dépendante de la technique telle qu'elle exosomatise les aptitudes corporelles et cognitives et les constituent en dispositions dans le fonctionnement des objets et des dispositifs techniques et spatiaux.

Abstract:
L’étude examine l’évolution d’un groupe d’élèves suivi à l’école pour des troubles de comportement dès le 1er cycle du primaire et cherche à déterminer si leur adaptation scolaire et sociale au 3e cycle devient comparable à celle d’enfants n’ayant pas eu de troubles de comportement en début de scolarité. Les résultats montrent que les troubles de comportement sont relativement stables en dépit des services reçus. Cependant, l’adaptation sociale des élèves est assez comparable à celle du groupe témoin pour ce qui est de la délinquance et de la consommation de psychotropes. Leur rendement scolaire demeure toutefois faible malgré de bonnes habiletés cognitives. Ces résultats sont discutés dans une perspective d’intervention.

Dans les organisations bancaires, la pratique de stockage des dossiers pose deux questions principales : la performance du management dans les sociétés de services d’une part et l’efficacité des mécanismes de coordination intra-organisationnelle d’autre part. Le concept de convention est mobilisé pour répondre au besoin de cohérence entre les dimensions cognitives et socio-techniques de la coordination et ses objectifs. Nous utilisons une grille de lecture pour analyser le processus de prêts immobiliers en banque de détail. L’opérationnalisation de cette grille met en évidence la contribution de la théorie des conventions à la performance organisationnelle et initie une typologie des conventions de comprendre l’origine des défaillances potentielles de coordination.

Les troubles du spectre de l’autisme (TSA) sont caractérisés par des manifestations atypiques dans la socialisation et la communication, par des intérêts restreints et des stéréotypies, et par des difficultés affectives et adaptatives. Les conduites suicidaires sont fréquemment évoquées chez les adolescents et adultes avec un TSA, sans déficience intellectuelle (SDI). Mais la recherche clinique dans ce domaine est très limitée et le diagnostic n’est pas envisagé dans les services d’urgence. Parmi les facteurs de risque individuels de suicide chez les patients TSA, on retrouve la dépression, les troubles anxieux et les antécédents familiaux de troubles affectifs. L’intimidation et les difficultés d’intégration socio-professionnelle sont également des facteurs environnementaux rapportés. Des études en lien avec les caractéristiques cognitives permettraient d’explorer plus rigoureusement la phénoménologie du suicide chez les patients TSA.

Résumé La prise en charge à domicile par la famille est considérée comme la principale alternative au placement en institution pour les patients atteints de démence. Cette solution peut avoir d'importantes répercussions sur la qualité de vie, la santé et l'état émotionnel de la personne responsable du malade. La lourdeur du fardeau est reliée non seulement à la gravité des symptômes du malade mais également à la personnalité, au vécu et aux capacités du soignant pour faire face au stress en général. Dans ce contexte, une intervention clinique centrée sur les besoins personnels du soignant, et visant l'apprentissage d'habiletés cognitives comportementales pour mieux gérer le stress associé à son rôle, s'avère souvent un prérequis indispensable ou un complément aux autres services de support plutôt axés sur les problèmes pratiques.

Au Canada, le nombre de personnes atteintes de troubles cognitifs n'est pas négligeable et les conséquences de ces troubles sur les activités de la vie quotidienne (AVQ) de ces personnes sont dramatiques. Suivant la sévérité des troubles, les personnes sont capables de réaliser leurs activités avec quelques difficultés ou sont totalement incapables de les faire, ce qui conduit souvent au placement de ces personnes dans des centres spécialisés. Ce placement, ainsi que le suivi de ces personnes, sont particulièrement onéreux pour la société. Pour cette raison, les gouvernements visent à favoriser des solutions de maintien à domicile. Une des pistes de solutions est de fournir aux personnes atteintes de troubles cognitifs un ensemble de services d'assistance technologiques, disponibles en tout temps et en tous lieux, capables de s'adapter aux différents outils technologiques présents dans l'environnement pour offrir une assistance continue. L'objectif de cette thèse est de concevoir une telle solution d'assistance en menant une recherche sur deux axes entrecroisés. Le premier axe concerne les solutions d'assistance d'un point de vue technologique, le second les aborde d'un point de vue plus clinique. Sur le plan technologique, à partir des solutions d'assistance déjà existantes ainsi que de leurs limitations, nous avons identifié un ensemble de services essentiels et les avons regroupés au sein de trois catégories. Nous présentons un modèle d'architecture logicielle pour la conception de ceux-ci visant à favoriser leur adaptation à différents contextes, leur évolution ainsi que l'intégration de nouveaux services. Enfin, nous présentons notre solution d'assistance baptisée SAMI. Au niveau clinique, nous montrons l'importance d'impliquer les personnes atteintes de troubles cognitifs, ainsi que leurs intervenants, tout au long du processus de conception de telles solutions. Nous présentons notre protocole de conception participative ainsi que sa mise en oeuvre dans le cadre de la conception de SAMI. La conception de cette solution a impliqué quatre patients ainsi que leurs intervenants professionnels et a été testée durant huit semaines. Les résultats montrent tout d'abord la possibilité de mettre en oeuvre de telles méthodes de conception, les patients ainsi que les intervenants ayant grandement participé tout au long du processus de conception. Ils montrent également la capacité des patients à apprendre à utiliser l'assistant élaboré ainsi que leur capacité à l'utiliser dans leur quotidien.

La présente thèse s’est intéressée à une conjonction rarement posée, celle du design et du Marketing des services, et ce pour une meilleure identification des leviers d’optimisation des possibilités de réussite de l’offre des prestataires des services. Leur articulation en « un design des services », a le mérite d’explorer tout un système de représentations cognitives d’innovation en vue de mieux éclairer un tel concept émergent, multiforme et par ailleurs complexe. Aussi, en portant notre réflexion sur le design des services d’un point de vue marketing, nous avons cherché à faire le point sur les différentes approches qui lui sont relatives, et à considérer des référents complexes et systémiques en vue de mobiliser les représentations cognitives du marché (structurées selon des modèles cognitivistes). A ces avancées d’ordre théorique, nous avons opté pour un terrain empirique à savoir le secteur des services touristiques autour des gsour du Sud-est Tunisien. Notre démarche exploratoire a été menée auprès des professionnels des services (36) et des consommateurs-touristes (67) au travers de guide d’entretien semi-directif. Dans un tel schéma multi-acteurs, les résultats ont révélé un foisonnement de représentations cognitives des innovations touristiques-culturelles dans le Sud-est Tunisien. Nous en dégageons des pistes d’enrichissement théorique et méthodologique pour une vision croisée du Marketing des services et du design, dans un contexte d’innovation.

Abstract:

The notion of service design as a design field has emerged during the last 10-15 years and seems to be growing more and more; a 2007 textbook on interaction design states: “The new frontier of interaction design is services” (Saffer, 2007, p. 174). Since the field is so young, there still are areas which hardly have been explored. One of these is cultural effects on service expectations. This thesis aims to help to fill in the knowledge gap by applying a model of cultural differences. The model used is the one developed by Geert Hofstede, which has been proved to be valid within a large number of varyingfields. This was done through the research question “Is Hofstede’s model applicable to service design in general, and individualization of services in particular?”.

The question was explored through two parallel research processes; a quantitative questionnaire distributed via the web and a qualitative evaluation of 47 different service web sites. The qualitative evaluation was done through a new method called Cultural Walkthrough. Four key countries were chosen; the questionnaire was aimed at natives of these countries and the web sites all came from these countries. The countries in question were Germany, India, the United Kingdom and the USA.

The results indicate that Hofstede’s model can’t be applied to service design straight off. Neither can they be used as a basis to deem the want for the possibility to individualize services, which seems to be dependent on the individual. The results indicate a large number of interesting questions for further research.

Abstract:

We describe CoSMo, a Cognitively Inspired Service and Model Architecture for situational awareness and monitoring of vehicular traffic in urban transportation systems using a network of wireless sensors. The system architecture combines (i) a cognitively inspired internal representation for analyzing and answering queries concerning the observed system and (ii) a service oriented architecture that facilitates interaction among individual modules, of the internal representation, the observed system and the user. The cognitively inspired model architecture allows one to effectively respond to deductive as well as inductive queries by combining simulation based dynamic models with traditional relational databases. On the other hand the service oriented design of interaction allows one to build flexible, extensible and scalable systems that can be deployed in practical settings. To illustrate our concepts and the novel features of our architecture, we have recently completed a prototype implementation of CoSMo. The prototype illustrates advantages of our approach over other traditional approaches for designing scalable software for situational awareness in large complex systems. The basic architecture and its prototype implementation are generic and can be applied for monitoring other complex systems. CoSMo's architecture has a number of features that distinguish cognitive systems. This includes: dynamic internal models of the observed system, inductive and deductive learning and reasoning, perception, memory and adaptation.

This thesis describes the service oriented model and the associated prototype implementation. Two important contributions of this thesis include the following:

  1. The Generic Service Architecture - CoSMo's service architecture is generic and can be applied to many other application domains without much change in underlying infrastructure.
  2. Integration of emerging web technologies - Use of Web Services, UPnP, UDDI and many other emerging technologies have taken CoSMo beyond a prototype implementation and towards a real production system.

Abstract:
In recent years, digital technologies such as artificial intelligence found their way into existing services, while at the same time providing the basis for entirely new possibilities. However, our understanding of the development of services based on these technologies is still limited. Due to the high complexity, they can rarely be developed within the boundaries of a single company or on the basis of knowledge from a single discipline. Building on the relevant literature, we derive a sound understanding of cognitive service systems from existing perspectives. Following an iterative process, we conducted several interdisciplinary workshops and analysed existing development approaches, which were adapted and recombined into a process model for cognitive service development. Our work contributes to a common understanding of cognitive service systems. By introducing a reference model that addresses the specific requirements for the successful development of cognitive services, we take a first step towards a systematic and holistic development of cognitive service systems that supports companies in this complex task.

The rapid development and popularization of logistics digitalization in China risks excluding the elderly who often find it hard to use digital express services due to the lack of digital knowledge and physical impairment. Design for an ageing population has become an essential social requirement. Through desk research, observation, interviews and thematic analysis, this paper provides insights into the physical and psychological barriers of elderly users in digital express service scenarios. It examines user needs from the dimensions of five barriers: perception, physical, mobility, cognitive, and psychological. This study puts forward the design strategy and experience framework model of age-friendly express services from service process, space design, hardware design, interaction design and emotional durability design. We improve service acceptance, emotional satisfaction by enhancing information recognizability, understandability, operation convenience and spatial accessibility. The optimized service system proposes a new service experience for the Cainiao Post to improve the satisfaction of elderly users.

The primary purpose of this paper is to introduce essential elements of cognitive information processing (CIP) theory, research, and practice as they existed at the time of this writing. The introduction that follows describes the nature of career choices and career interventions, and the integration of theory, research, and practice. After the introduction, the paper continues with three main sections that include CIP theory related to vocational behavior, research related to vocational behavior and career intervention, and CIP theory related to career interventions. The first main section describes CIP theory, including the evolution of CIP theory, the nature of career problems, theoretical assumptions, the pyramid of information processing domains, the CASVE Cycle, and the use of the pyramid and CASVE cycle. The second main section describes CIP theory-based research in examining vocational behavior and establishing evidence-based practice for CIP theory-based career interventions. The third main section describes CIP theory related to career intervention practice, including theoretical assumptions, readiness for career decision making, readiness for career intervention, the differentiated service delivery model, and critical ingredients of career interventions. The paper concludes with regularly updated sources of information on CIP theory.

The article reveals the problems of mastering by future specialists of the project methodology of creating pedagogical situations in higher education institutions as a means of improving the quality of education. Objectives of the article: to determine the influence of the project method on the creation of pedagogical situations in the process of teaching students; the choice of logic and mechanism of design actions depends on the purpose and the initial conceptual position regarding the subject reincarnates; to study the influence of pedagogical situations on the quality of education in the higher pedagogical school; to diagnose the implementation of the projects method and pedagogical situations in the process of education at the university. The project method provides the presence of a problem that requires integrated knowledge and research for its solution. The results of the planned activities should have practical, theoretical and cognitive significance. Modeling of pedagogical situations is the process of formation of situations-models which simulate the state and dynamics of the educational process and fix the contradiction between the achieved and desired in the personality development in a certain time interval. During the forming experiment, pedagogical situations were used to form the professional competence of the future specialist.

Los primeros 1000 años de vida (desde el embarazo hasta aproximadamente los 2 años de edad) de niños y niñas constituyen una ventana única de intervención en desarrollo infantil temprano para la estimulación y para orientar a padres en prácticas de paternidad. Como respuesta a los retos persistentes de la situación del desarrollo físico, cognitivo y socioemocional de la niñez en Bolivia, el gobierno está implementando el Programa de Desarrollo Infantil Temprano "Crecer Bien para Vivir Bien". La información presentada en esta nota técnica analiza los datos de línea de base de la evaluación de impacto para el componente de fortalecimiento de centros infantiles del programa. We analyze the source with problems of formation of ecological competence. The article focuses mainly general-purpose computer system support learning Moodle, which allows you to organize individual and collective work of students to master the specialized course teaching material used in teaching special course "Environmental Geoinformatics" in the implementation of educational research.

This document offers a synthesis of insights from recent research and design activities conducted by ideas42 through Breakthrough RESEARCH, Breakthrough ACTION, and other projects across nine different low- and middle-income settings about the behavioral roots of challenges health care providers face in providing high quality services. We discuss how the physical and social environment in which they work and live sends signals to providers about what is important, how they can navigate difficulties, and how well they are performing. We discuss how experiences outside the health facility impact how providers approach their professional duties. We also discuss how pervasive time and resource constraints create a cognitive and emotional burden that gets in the way of what they can do, even within these constraints. For each challenge, we also share lessons emerging from this research about about how global health practitioners can address these challenges through program design and implementation.

Public transportation is an essential part of many older adults’ lives, but the pandemic presented new challenges for the vulnerable population. Adults aged 65 years and older experienced additional challenges, such as limited mobility options (e.g., lack of buses or trains in service due a combination of government lockdowns, fear of contracting or spreading the virus, and driver shortages in certain areas) because of the pandemic, which may have resulted in more age-related declines in perceptual, cognitive, and physical functioning. This study explores how older adults living in major metropolitan cities in the United States used and perceived public transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research team conducted an online survey through the Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) crowdsourcing marketplace, a platform that offers opportunities to recruit a larger number of participants from diverse geographic locations. 260 respondents completed the survey. Eligibility included: (1) residing in the United States, (2) being aged 55 years or older (the oldest age that can be selected on MTurk), and (3) having an approval rating of 90% or above (i.e., the percentage of the workers’ submitted tasks approved by survey requesters, offered by the MTurk platform). Overall, older adults reported that they had changed travel patterns since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, experienced challenges in using public transportation, and expressed concerns about catching the SARS-CoV-2 virus while using public transportation. Mobile technology (e.g., a transportation navigation app) was perceived as a good option for finding public transportation information, but needs improved user experience and accessibility. These findings may help transit agencies develop effective strategies for improving transportation services and increasing policymakers’ awareness of older adults’ need for accessible public transportation.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has monitored the extent and severity of food insecurity in U.S. households for more than 25 years. Data on food security is collected annually as part of the Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement (CPS-FSS). USDA, Economic Research Service undertook a process to update the survey instrument used for the CPS-FSS data collection. An updated survey instrument was created through a process of expert content review and cognitive testing. The revised survey instrument was implemented by the U.S. Census Bureau in a split-panel data collection test in September 2020. The split panel formed two samples that were weighted to represent the U.S. population. Estimates for food spending, food security, and participation in Federal and community nutrition assistance were compared across the two samples. The analysis confirmed that the minor changes to the food security section are unlikely to affect the measurement of food insecurity, or affect comparability of estimates from year-to-year
