Abstract:

This study highlights a number of different aspects regarding uniforms and dress codes in the United Kingdom (UK) and Sweden. The study comprises three parts: a quantitative comparison of GCSE pass rates for schools in the UK that do and do not have school uniforms, a qualitative survey study of Scottish High School pupils' perceptions about their uniform and a qualitative interview study of Swedish teachers, administrators and pupils about their school dress, rules regarding school dress and school uniforms.

Regarding whether uniforms improved academic results by comparing GCSE pass rates in the UK we were unable to find conclusive evidence to suggest that schools which had uniform policies performed significantly better than other schools.

Regarding Scottish pupils’ perceptions of their uniforms, pupils from lower-educated backgrounds were more likely to perceive that they were told off by teachers about not wearing the correct dress. When asked whether pupils felt more equal compared to their peers, those from lower-educated background were more likely to think that uniforms do not help to level out class difference compared to pupils from better educated backgrounds. Regarding bullying, even though uniforms existed at the school studied bullying due to what pupils wore to school still existed and pupils perceived that bullying due to other factors such as physical appearance also occurred.

Regarding the results from interviews with teachers and administrators in the Swedish town studied, most teachers took a fairly relaxed attitude towards pupils’ dress although the dress code of not wearing outdoor clothes in High Schools was policed quite strongly. Teachers saw the issue of female pupils dressing overtly sexually as the biggest problem and this was dealt with on an individual level rather than a class level.

High school pupils’ opinions of their dress code varied. Some hated the school rule that they were not allowed to wear outdoor clothes, whereas for others it was not seen as a big deal. A number of pupils thought that what you wore in class does not affect their learning outcomes. Very few pupils thought that introducing a uniform would be a good idea. Pupils at Sixth Form College had a more mature attitude towards their dress and were able to reflect back on their experiences from High School. They did not think that the issue of dress was a major issue in Sixth Form College however this did vary slightly between the three schools studied. Pupils at two of the schools perceived the dress code of the third school as being more formal, but this was due mainly to prejudice according to a number of pupils. The large majority of Sixth Form College students thought that introducing school uniform would be a bad idea and that bullying would not be eradicated because pupils can always pick on other attributes, not just clothing. However there were a couple of Sixth Form College that thought that introducing it would be a good way to reduce peer-pressure to buy the right clothes in High School.

Space-time coding (STC) schemes for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems have been an area of active research in the past decade. In this thesis, we propose a novel design of Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs) using Redundant Residue Number System (RRNS) codes, which are ideal for high data rate communication systems. Application of RRNS as a concatenated STC scheme to a MIMO wireless communication system is the main motivation for this work. We have optimized the link between residues and complex constellations by incorporating the “Direct Mapping” scheme, where residues are mapped directly to Gray coded constellations. Knowledge of apriori probabilities of residues is utilized to implement a probability based “Distance-Aware Direct Mapping” (DA) scheme, which uses a set-partitioning approach to map the most probable residues such that they are separated by the maximum possible distance. We have proposed an “Indirect Mapping” scheme, where we convert the residues back to bits before mapping them. We have also proposed an adaptive demapping scheme which utilizes the RRNS code structure to reduce the ML decoding complexity and improve the error performance. We quantify the upper bounds on codeword and bit error probabilities of both Systematic and Non-systematic RRNS-STBC and characterize the achievable coding and diversity gains assuming maximum likelihood decoding (MLD). Simulation results demonstrate that the DA Mapping scheme provides performance gain relative to a Gray coded direct mapping scheme. We show that Systematic RRNS-STBC codes provide superior performance compared to Nonsystematic RRNS-STBC, for the same code parameters, owing to more efficient binary to residue mapping. When compared to other concatenated STBC and Orthogonal STBC (OSTBC) schemes, the proposed system gives better performance at low SNRs.

Abstract:
This thesis is part of a larger project devoted to modeling galaxies via numerical hydrodynamical simulations, from their formation within their cosmological background throughout their evolutionary history. The thesis has two primary objectives, strictly linked with one another. The first one, of astrophysical nature, is to develop a purely theoretical scenario for the formation and evolution of galaxies in the cosmological context. Given the complexity of the targeted physical systems, it is necessary to rely upon on numerical simulations which in turn require an appropriate numerical code, able to follow the complex physics of galaxies. Therefore, the second objective is the optimization of such code, according to the paradigms of modern computational science. Indeed, given the complexity of the involved physical phenomena the code must be enriched with a number of complex algorithms, which at the same time slow down its performance to such a point that it is difficult to extensively use it to explore the whole scenario in detail, unless sophisticated optimization techniques are applied to drastically reduce the computational time. In this thesis I have studied the problem of the optimization of numerical codes in serial and parallel architectures and I will present the different strategies I have adopted to make them faster, with particular attention to EvoL, the N-body Tree-SPH code entirely written in the house and widely used by the Padua group. To develop and optimize a code like EvoL, specific skills are needed, ranging from classical astrophysics to computer science. To cope with this, in the thesis I first introduce some general concepts on the functioning of a computer machine, its structure and architecture, the various reasons why a code, although correct from a mathematical and logical point a view, does not in practice work at the maximum level of efficiency and does not exploit the formal computing power to disposal in a optimal form. To this aim, I examine some important aspects of the general behaviour of a code and highlight several strategies that can be followed to optimize it. In particular, I analyze the code response in different situations highlighting the limitations, the routines with the heaviest load, and the importance of the communications between CPUs in parallel environment. Given these premises, we present EvoL, a lagrangian code based on the classical NB-TSPH formalism, and describe in some detail its structure and physical content. In particular we report on the new physical treatment of the interstellar medium and the companion codes ROBO and MaNN we have recently developed, and how they are implemented in EvoL. Then we describe the various optimizations we have applied to EvoL in order to improve its efficiency. Finally we report on the physical results we have obtained using EvoL, and ancillary codes ROBO and MaNN. In brief, we describe the physical content of the last release of EvoL, and the many hydrodynamical test we have performed to validate it. Second we describe the two studies dedicated to the treatment of the interstellar medium with the state of the art description of its chemistry and thermodynamical properties, and how these results can be implemented in EvoL, thanks to an extensive use of the artificial neural networks. Finally we present a set new models of early type galaxies obtained from cosmological initial conditions at varying the initial mass and density contrast with respect to the cosmological background and their subsequent evolution into well behaved galaxies. Particular attention is paid to the different role played by the density contrast of dark matter in the proto-halo generating the galaxy and the density of the baryonic matter (gas) required to initiate the star formation process. In general, while proto-galaxies of high mass give origin to a single dominant episode of star formation taking place very early on in a galaxy’s history, proto-galaxies of low mass have a more complicated history of star formation, which a series of episodes of variable intensity often interrupted by periods of quiescence.
Questa tesi è parte di un più ampio progetto dedicato alla comprensione e alla modellizzazione della formazione ed evoluzione delle galassie da diversi punti di vista: formazione di strutture cosmologiche a tutte le scale e formazione ed evoluzione della singole entità fatte di materia oscura e barionica. La tesi ha due obiettivi fondamentali intimamente legati. Il primo di natura astrofisica è già stato toccato e riguarda lo sviluppo di uno scenario puramente teorico per la formazione ed evoluzione delle galassie in contesto cosmologico. Data la complessità dei sistemi fisici studiati, il lavoro è fortemente basato su simulazioni numeriche che richiedono appropriati codici in grado di seguire la complessa fisica delle galassie. Pertanto, il secondo obiettivo riguarda l’ottimizzazione del codice numerico secondo i paradigmi della moderna scienza computazionale. Infatti, la complessità dei fenomeni fisici considerati, rende il codice più dettagliato da un punto di vista fisico, ma allo stesso tempo, lo rallenta al punto che non può essere direttamente utilizzato in modo sistematico, a meno che non vengano applicate sofisticate tecniche di ottimizzazione per ridurne drasticamente i tempi di calcolo. In questa tesi ho studiato il problema della ottimizzazione di codici numerici in architetture seriali e parallele e le strategie adottate per renderli più veloci, con particolare attenzione al codice EvoL interamente scritto in casa e ampiamente utilizzato il gruppo di Padova. Per sviluppare e ottimizzare un codice come EvoL sono necessarie competenze specifiche che vanno dalla astrofisica classica alla “computer science”. In sintesi, ho esaminato alcuni aspetti importanti del comportamento generale del codice e illustrato le diverse strategie applicate per ottimizzarlo. In particolare ho analizzato la risposta di un codice in situazioni diverse mettendo in evidenza i limiti globali, le routine di calcolo che spendono più tempo, e l’importanza delle comunicazioni MPI. Viene poi presentato il codice evolutivo e il suo contenuto fisico: EvoL è l’ultima versione del codice numerico lagrangiano sviluppato a Padova da C. Chiosi e collaboratori (Carraro et al. 1998; Merlin et al. 2010) basato sui classici algoritmi Tree-code (Barnes and Hut 1986) e SPH (Lucy 1977). Riporto il nuovo trattamento fisico del mezzo interstellare attraverso i codici recentemente sviluppati ROBO e MaNN, e l’implementazione del modello in EvoL. Ancora, vengono descritte le metodologie usate per valutare l’efficienza complessiva di EvoL, e le varie ottimizzazioni applicate; si descrivono anche i risultati ottenuti utilizzando il codice. Prima sono illustrati i diversi miglioramenti fisici che abbiamo incluso in EvoL, e i relativi tests idrodinamici fatti per validare il suo contenuto fisico. Successivamente si descrivono i due studi dedicati al trattamento del mezzo interstellare, della sua chimica, delle sue proprietà termodinamiche. Infine presentiamo una nuova serie di modelli di galassie “early type”, ottenute da condizioni iniziali cosmologiche variando la massa iniziale e il contrasto di densità rispetto al fondo cosmologico, e la loro successiva evoluzione. Particolare attenzione è rivolta al diverso ruolo svolto dal contrasto densità di materia oscura nel proto-alone e la densità della materia barionica (gas) necessaria per avviare il processo di formazione stellare. In generale, mentre le proto-galassie di grande massa danno origine ad un singolo episodio di formazione stellare che avviene precocemente nel corso della storia evolutiva della galassia, le proto-galassie di piccola massa hanno una storia di formazione stellare più complicata, con una serie di episodi di intensità variabile spesso interrotti da periodi di quiescenza.

O Código Civil de 2002 disciplinou os atos de disposição do próprio corpo em vida em seu artigo 13, definindo como limites para o exercício da autonomia corporal a impossibilidade de diminuição permanente da integridade física e o respeito aos bons costumes, ressalvado os atos praticados por exigência médica ou finalidade terapêutica. Sob a perspectiva da constitucionalização do direito civil, a tutela da personalidade afigura-se como desdobramento na esfera privada de um dos fundamentos da República: o princípio da dignidade humana, o que implica não apenas a tutela da integridade física, mas também o respeito à autonomia privada existencial como forma de assegurar o livre desenvolvimento da personalidade. Neste sentido, a análise proposta parte das premissas de superação do dualismo mente e corpo através da noção de integridade psicofísica, e do biopoder como alicerce das interdições sofridas pela autonomia corporal na esfera jurídica. É nesta linha que a presente dissertação pretende buscar os fundamentos para a interpretação do referido dispositivo do Código Civil brasileiro.
The Civil Code of 2002 regulates the acts of own body disposal while living in its 13 th article determinating the impossibility of permanent diminish of the physical integrity and the respect of morality as limits for the exercise of body autonomy, with the except of the acts practiced under medical demand or with therapeutic finality. Under the perspective of the constitutionalization of the Civil Law, the guardianship of the personality appears as an outspread of one of the Republics fundamentals on the private sphere: the human dignity principle, which implies not only the guardianship of physical integrity, but also the respect of existential private autonomy as a way to assure the free development of the personality. In that sense, the analysis proposed is set off with the premises of the body and mind dualism surpass through the notion of psychophysics integrity, and the biopower as the foundation of the interdictions in the juridical sphere suffered by the body autonomy. It is in this line that the present dissertation intends to search the elements in order to interpret the referred legal device of the brazilian civil code.

Les satellites sont mis en orbite en utilisant des lanceurs dont la conception est une des activités principales d’Airbus Defence and Space. Pour ce faire, se baser sur des expériences n’est pas facile : les souffleries ne permettent pas d’évaluer toutes les situations auxquelles un lanceur est confronté au cours de sa mission. La simulation numérique est donc essentielle pour l’industrie spatiale. Afin de disposer de simulations toujours plus fidèles, il est nécessaire d’utiliser des supercalculateurs de plus en plus puissants. Cependant, ces machines voient leur complexité augmenter et pour pouvoir exploiter leur plein potentiel, il est nécessaire d’adapter les codes existants. Désormais, il semble essentiel de passer par des couches d’abstraction afin d’assurer une bonne portabilité des performances. ADS a développé depuis plus de 20 ans le code FLUSEPA qui est utilisé pour le calcul de phénomènes instationnaires comme les calculs d’onde de souffle au décollage ou les séparations d’étages. Le solveur aérodynamique est basé sur une formulation volume fini et une technique d’intégration temporelle adaptative. Les corps en mouvement sont pris en compte via l’utilisation de plusieurs maillages qui sont combinés par intersections.Cette thèse porte sur la parallélisation du code FLUSEPA. Au début de la thèse, la seule version parallèle disponible était en mémoire partagée. Une première version parallèle en mémoire distribuée a d’abord été réalisée. Les gains en performance de cette version ont été évalués via l’utilisation de deux cas tests industriels. Un démonstrateur du solveur aérodynamique utilisant la programmation par tâche au dessus d’un runtime a aussi été réalisé
There are different kinds of satellites that offer different services like communication, navigationor observation. They are put into orbit through the use of launchers whose design is oneof the main activities of Airbus Defence and Space. Relying on experiments is not easy : windtunnel cannot be used to evaluate every critical situation that a launcher will face during itsmission. Numerical simulation is therefore mandatory for spatial industry.In order to have more reliable simulations, more computational power is needed and supercomputersare used. Those supercomputers become more and more complex and this impliesto adapt existing codes to make them run efficiently. Nowadays, it seems important to rely onabstractions in order to ensure a good portability of performance. Airbus Defence and Spacedeveloped for more than 20 years the FLUSEPA code which is used to compute unsteady phenomenalike take-off blast wave or stage separation. The aerodynamic solver relies on a finitevolume formulation and an explicit temporal adaptive solver. Bodies in relative motion are takeninto account through the use of multiple meshes that are overlapped.This thesis is about the parallelization of the FLUSEPA code. At the start of the thesis,the only parallel version available was in shared memory through OpenMP. A first distributedmemory version was realized and relies on MPI and OpenMP. The performance improvementof this version was evaluated on two industrial test cases. A task-based demonstrator of theaerodynamic solver was also realized over a runtime system

À « l’ère du numérique », cette thèse porte sur le livre défini comme forme médiatique. En réinterrogeant la conception occidentale de la communication portée par ce média, elle met en regard la forme matérielle du livre et sa fonction symbolique. La thèse se nourrit d'une histoire des formes pour analyser les mutations liées à l’émergence du « livre numérique ». Le livre assure une fonction de médiation entre les partenaires de l’échange, irréductiblement absents l’un à l’autre. Cette absence est envisagée comme un principe moteur, travaillant le processus communicationnel du livre dont la matérialisation constituerait l’hypothèse d’une « rencontre ». Dès lors, dans quelle mesure le livre emprunte-t-il au modèle du corps pour prendre en charge sa fonction de médiation et fonder son « opérativité symbolique » ? Renversant le regard sur cet objet considéré comme figé, nous interrogeons son processus dynamique d’inscription dans la vie sociale. Et, envisageant les dimensions « composites » de sa fabrique, nous tentons de saisir les enjeux des corporéités du livre entre langue, texte et support. Notre hypothèse est que le livre se donne comme un corps substitutif porté par une pensée de la co-présence de ses acteurs, en tant que forme dans laquelle ils font alternativement « présence ». Il s’agit donc d’interroger les corporéités du média et en retour d’analyser la façon dont le livre participe de la construction de conceptions culturelles et sociales du corps. En repensant les enjeux de la médiation, cette thèse pose les perspectives d’une anthropologie communicationnelle invitant à reconsidérer les médias au regard d’une réarticulation des rapports entre nature et culture
In today’s digital age, this Ph.D. thesis focuses on books defined as a form of media. Reconsidering the western idea of the communication conveyed by this medium, it juxtaposes the physical form of books and their symbolic role. This thesis is built on a history of the forms a book can take to analyse the transformations related to the rise of the « e-book ». Books fulfil a role of mediation between the partners of an exchange, who are irreducibly absent from each other. This absence is envisioned as a driving force, shaping the communication process of books, which incarnation would constitute the presumption of an encounter. To what extent are the mediation function played by books and the foundation of their symbolic efficiency built on the very same bases as those of bodies? Although generally considered as being immovable objects, we revolutionize the way books are perceived, and we examine the dynamic process of their acceptance in social life. Accounting for their “composite” features, we attempt to fully apprehend the implications of the corporealities of books, including language, text and physical object. Our hypothesis is that a book may be viewed as a substitute of a body, nourished by the thought of the co-presence of its contributors, in that it constitutes a form in which they are alternatively present. It is therefore necessary to investigate the corporealities of the media and to analyse the role of books in the construction of the cultural and social concepts of the body. Reconsidering the implications of the mediation, this thesis raises the prospects of an anthropology of communication, inviting to re-evaluate the medias from the perspective of a restructuring of the relations between nature and culture

Introdução: A força muscular inspiratória tem sido tradicionalmente avaliada pela pressão inspiratória máxima (PImáx). A pressão inspiratória nasal (sniff nasal inspiratory pressure [SNIP]) é uma alternativa viável ao uso da PImáx e é considerada um preditor de mortalidade em pacientes com doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica (DPOC). No entanto, a relação da SNIP com índices multidimensionais preditores de mortalidade como o Body mass index, airflow Obstruction, Dyspnea and Exercise capacity (BODE) ainda não foi investigada. Objetivo: Investigar a relação entre a SNIP e o índice BODE em pacientes com DPOC, bem como, investigar a capacidade de diferentes pontos de corte da SNIP em prever um índice BODE ≥ 5 (ou seja, pior gravidade da doença). Métodos: Trinta e oito pacientes com DPOC (21 homens, 66 ± 8 anos, com volume expiratório forçado no primeiro segundo (VEF1) de 42 ± 16% do previsto) foram submetidos a avaliações da SNIP, espirometria, grau de limitação devido à dispneia na vida diária (Medical Research Council - MRC) e a capacidade de exercício por meio do teste de caminhada de 6 minutos (TC6min). O índice BODE foi calculado e os pacientes foram subdivididos em dois grupos de acordo com os quartis do BODE (1 e 2 ou 3 e 4). Resultados: Os pacientes dos quartis 3 e 4 apresentaram menores valores da SNIP do que os pacientes dos quartis 1 e 2 (73±18 cmH2O vs 56±21 cmH2O, respectivamente, P=0,01). Houve correlação significativa e negativa entre a SNIP e o índice BODE (r = -0,62, P <0,001). Um modelo de regressão logística revelou que o ponto de corte da SNIP de 63 cmH2O apresentou maior especificidade e sensibilidade (67% e 70% , respectivamente) para a previsão de uma pontuação equivalente aos quartis 3 ou 4 do índice BODE. Conclusão: Em pacientes com DPOC a SNIP é moderadamente e significativamente relacionada com a gravidade da doença avaliada pelo índice BODE. Além disso, o ponto de corte de 63 cmH2O apresentou a melhor combinação de sensibilidade e especificidade para predizer uma pontuação mais alta (i.e., mais grave) no índice BODE.
Introduction: Inspiratory muscle force has been traditionally assessed by maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP). The sniff nasal inspiratory pressure [SNIP] is an alternative to the MIP, and it is considered a predictor of mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the relationship of SNIP with multidimensional indexes which predict mortality in patients with COPD such as the Body mass index, airflow Obstruction, Dyspnea and Exercise capacity (BODE) index has not been investigated yet. The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship between sniff nasal inspiratory pressure (SNIP) and severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as defined by the BODE index; and to investigate the capacity of different SNIP cutoffs to predict a BODE index score ≥ 5 (i.e worse disease severity). Methods: Thirty-eight subjects with COPD (21 men, 66±8 years, forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) 42±16% predicted) underwent assessments of SNIP, airflow limitation, body mass index (BMI), dyspnea (Medical Research Council scale, MRC) and exercise capacity (6-minute walking test, 6MWT). The BODE index was calculated and patients were separated into two groups according to the BODE quartiles (1 and 2, or 3 and 4). Results: Patients from quartiles 3 and 4 presented lower values of SNIP than patients from quartiles 1 and 2 (73±18 cmH2O vs 56±21 cmH2O, respectively; P=0.01). There was significant and negative correlation between SNIP and the BODE index (r=-0.62; P<0.001). A logistic regression model revealed that a SNIP value below 63 cmH2O presented higher sensitivity and specificity (70% and 67%, respectively) for predicting a BODE score equivalent to quartiles 3 or 4. Conclusion: SNIP is moderately and significantly related to COPD severity as assessed by the BODE index. Moreover, the cutoff point of 63 cmH2O showed the best combination of sensitivity and specificity for predicting worse scores in the BODE index.

The present work is part of a larger multi-scale effort aiming to increase knowledge of thephysical phenomena underneath reactor pressure vessel irradiation embrittlement. Withinthis framework, we focused on the description of dislocation mobility in BCC iron, which is oneof the key inputs to dislocation dynamics (DD) simulation codes. An extensive bibliographicreview shows that none of the available expressions can deal with the ductile-fragile transitiondomain of interest. Here, a new screw mobility law able to reproduce the main experimentalobservations is introduced building on the previous models. In the wake of the Big Data phenomenon, the computing world has seen a number of computational paradigms developed in response to the sudden need to process ever-increasing volumes of data. Most notably, MapReduce has proven quite successful in scaling out an extensible class of simple algorithms to even hundreds of thousands of nodes. However, there are some tasks---even embarrassingly parallelizable ones---that neither MapReduce nor any existing automated parallelization framework is well-equipped to perform. For instance, any computation that (naively) requires consideration of all pairs of inputs becomes prohibitively expensive even when parallelized over a large number of worker nodes. Many of the most desirable methods in machine learning and statistics exhibit these kinds of all-pairs or, more generally, all-tuples computations; accordingly, their application in the Big Data setting may seem beyond hope. However, a new algorithmic strategy inspired by breakthroughs in computational physics has shown great promise for a wide class of computations dubbed generalized N-body problems (GNBPs). This strategy, which involves the simultaneous traversal of multiple space-partitioning trees, has been applied to a succession of well-known learning methods, accelerating each asymptotically and by orders of magnitude. Examples of these include all-k-nearest-neighbors search, k-nearest-neighbors classification, k-means clustering, EM for mixtures of Gaussians, kernel density estimation, kernel discriminant analysis, kernel machines, particle filters, the n-point correlation, and many others. For each of these problems, no overall faster algorithms are known. Further, these dual- and multi-tree algorithms compute either exact results or approximations to within specified error bounds, a rarity amongst fast methods. This dissertation aims to unify a family of GNBPs under a common framework in order to ease implementation and future study. We start by formalizing the problem class and then describe a general algorithm, the generalized fast multipole method (GFMM), capable of solving all problems that fit the class, though with varying degrees of speedup. We then show O(N) and O(log N) theoretical run-time bounds that may be obtained under certain conditions. As a corollary, we derive the tightest known general-dimensional run-time bounds for exact all-nearest-neighbors and several approximated kernel summations. Next, we implement a number of these algorithms in a commercial database, empirically demonstrating dramatic asymptotic speedup over their conventional SQL implementations. Lastly, we implement a fast, parallelized algorithm for kernel discriminant analysis and apply it to a large dataset (40 million points in 4D) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, identifying approximately one million quasars with high accuracy. This exceeds the previous largest catalog of quasars in size by a factor of ten and has since been used in a follow-up study to confirm the existence of dark energy.

Intro In this practice-led research project I investigate relations between structures of coercion in the built world and sculptural language. The aim of my project is to present a series of exhibitions and situations that examine architectures of bodily discipline as practices of form/space composition and spatial manipulation. Such architectures range from the delineation of public space to the choreography of bodies by urban design. The project engages the viewer in a dialogue around art and the spatio-visual codes that embody what Michel Foucault regarded as the coercive powers of modern 'carceral culture'. I research a range of studio and workshop, site and gallery based processes contextualised by contemporary notions of sculpture, materiality and art practice. I work from a position derived from the writings on art by the minimalist sculptor Robert Morris (1966, 1970), Rosalind Krauss (1977, 1979) and Hal Foster (1996), which stress the experience of the viewer as an integral part of the art work and emphasise the nature of art work in 'real' spaces. Proposed Project To investigate relations between 'structures of coercion' in the built world and sculptural language through a series of exhibitions and situations (installations at ARIs, public collaborative works, studio documentations) that examine architectures of bodily discipline as practices of form/space composition and spatial manipulation. Au moins 20% des étoiles de la séquence principale abritent des disques de débris, analogues à la ceinture de Kuiper. Ces disques sont la preuve que l'accumulation de solides a au moins permis la formation de corps de taille kilométrique. Il n'est donc pas surprenant que plusieurs de ces disques soient accompagnés de planètes, qui, en laissant leur empreinte dynamique sur la structure spatiale de ces disques, révèlent leur présence. Par conséquent, la détection d'un disque de débris excentrique entourant Zeta² Ret par le télescope spatial Herschel indique la présence d'un perturbateur massif dans ce système. Zeta² Ret étant un système mature, âgé de 2-3 Gyr, et en ce sens, analogue à notre propre système solaire, il offre un exemple différent d'évolution dynamique à long terme. Cette thèse comprend une modélisation détaillée de la structure du disque de débris de Zeta² Ret, ce qui conduit à des contraintes sur la masse et l'orbite du perturbateur suspecté. Cette étude révèle également que les structures excentriques dans les disques de débris peuvent survivre sur des échelles de temps Gyr.La modélisation de disques de débris peut permettre la découverte postérieure de planètes comme c'est le cas pour le système de Fomalhaut. La forme excentrique de son disque de débris fut d'abord attribuée à Fom b, un compagnon détecté près du bord interne du disque, mais qui se révèle finalement trop excentrique (e~0.6-0.9) pour lui donner sa forme, indiquant la présence d'un autre corps massif, Fom c. Le système planétaire qui en résulte est très instable, ce qui implique une diffusion récente de Fom b sur son orbite actuelle, éventuellement par Fom c. L'étude de ce scénario révèle qu'en ayant résidé dans une résonance de moyen-mouvement interne avec une Fom c excentrique et de masse comparable à Neptune ou Saturne, Fom b aurait subi une augmentation progressive de son excentricité sur des périodes comparables à l'âge du système (~440 Myr), ce qui l'aurait amenée assez proche de Fom c pour subir une diffusion récente, qui, complétée par une évolution séculaire avec Fom c, explique sa configuration orbitale actuelle. Ce mécanisme en trois étapes pourrait également avoir généré d'importantes quantités de matériel en orbites très excentriques, ce qui en retour pourrait alimenter en poussière les parties internes du système. Par conséquent, ce mécanisme pourrait aussi expliquer la présence de ceintures de poussières internes dans le système de Fomalhaut, mais aussi la découverte d'une importante population de ceintures de poussières chaudes et massives dans les systèmes âgés de plus de 100 Myr.Les systèmes planétaires découverts jusqu'ici présentent une grande variété d'architectures, et notre système solaire est loin d'être un modèle générique. Un des principaux mécanismes déterminant la morphologie d'un système planétaire est la migration planétaire. On attend d'un compagnon stellaire - ce que notre système solaire ne possède pas - qu'il affecte les conditions de migration planétaire, et conduise potentiellement à la formation de systèmes planétaires très différents. Ce phénomène est évidemment non négligeable puisque les systèmes binaires représentent au moins la moitié des systèmes stellaires. Dans les systèmes planétaires matures, la migration planétaire peut se produire suite à l'interaction avec le matériel solide et l'impact de la binarité sur cette migration tardive est exploré dans cette thèse. Un compagnon circumstellaire pourrait inverser la tendance à la migration interne des planètes dans les systèmes stellaires simples, et rapprocher ces planètes des régions perturbées par le compagnon binaire, où elles ne pourraient pas s'être formées in situ. Cela pourrait fournir une explication à la présence de planètes qui présentent des signes de migration externe vers un compagnon circumstellaire dans les systèmes de Gamma Cephei et HD 196885
At least 20% of Main-Sequence stars are known to harbor debris disks analogs to the Kuiper Belt. These disks are proof that the accretion of solids has permitted the formation of at least km-sized bodies. It is thus not surprising that several of these disks are accompanied by planets, which may reveal themselves by setting their dynamical imprints on the spatial structure of debris disks. Therefore, the detection of an eccentric debris disk surrounding Zeta² Ret by the Herschel space telescope provides evidence for the presence of a massive perturber in this system.Zeta² Ret being a mature Gyr-old system, and in that sense, analogous to our own Solar System, it offers a different example of long-term dynamical evolution. This thesis includes a detailed modeling of the structure of the debris disk of Zeta² Ret, which leads to constraints on the mass and orbital characteristics of the putative perturber. This study also reveals that eccentric structures in debris disks can survive on Gyr timescales.Detailed modeling of the structure of debris disks can allow the posterior discovery of hidden planets as is the case for the Fomalhaut system. The eccentric shape of the debris disk observed around this star was first attributed to Fom b, a companion detected near the belt inner-edge, which revealed to be highly eccentric (e~0.6-0.9), and thus very unlikely shaping the belt. This hints at the presence of another massive body in this system, Fom c, which drives the debris disk shape. The resulting planetary system is highly unstable, which involves a recent scattering of Fom b on its current orbit, potentially with the yet undetected Fom c. This scenario is investigated in this thesis and its study reveals that by having resided in inner mean-motion resonance with a Neptune or Saturn-mass belt-shaping eccentric Fom c and therefore have suffered a gradual resonant eccentricity increase on timescales comparable to the age of the system (~440 Myr), Fom b could have been brought close enough to Fom c and suffered a recent scattering event, which, complemented by a secular evolution with Fom c, explains its current orbital configuration. This three-step scenario also implies that significant amounts of material may have been set on extremely eccentric orbits such as this of Fom b through this mechanism, which in return could feed in dust the inner parts of the system. Therefore, this mechanism may also explain the presence of inner dust belts in the Fomalhaut system, but also the discovery a significant population of very bright hot dust belts in systems older than 100 Myr.The planetary systems discovered so far exhibit a great variety of architectures, and our solar system is far from being a generic model. One of the main mechanism that determines a planetary system morphology is planetary migration. The presence of a stellar binary companion - which our solar system is deprived of - is expected to affect planetary migration conditions, and potentially lead to the formation of very different planetary systems. This phenomenon is obviously non-negligible since binary systems represent at least half of stellar systems. At late stages of planetary systems formation, planetary migration may occur as the result of interactions with remaining solid planetesimals and the impact of binarity on this planetesimal-driven migration is explored in this thesis. A stellar binary companion may in fact reverse the tendency for planets in single star systems to migrate inwards, and bring them closer to regions perturbed by the binary companion, where they could not have formed in situ. This may give an explanation for the presence of planets which present signs of outward migration towards a circumstellar companion in the Gamma Cephei and HD 196885 systems

Les systèmes juridiques d’aujourd’hui diffèrent passablement de ceux en vigueur il y a quarante ans. L’affirmation est applicable notamment aux domaines économiques qui se trouvent sous l’empire de ce qu’on connaît comme régulation. En effet, un simple regard sur le droit contemporain montre, d’une partie, un éclatement d’entités nouvelles qui ont pour mission la création, la surveillance, voire l’application du droit, et, d’une autre partie l’existence des aménagements dans la conception et l’application des normes qui régissent une certaine activité ; le développement de la soft law, de l’autorégulation, des normes internationales, parmi d’autres exemples, font partie desdits aménagements. Ce phénomène, nommé nouvelles formes de régulation, fortement plébiscité par une partie de la doctrine juridique il y a quelques années, est désormais remis en cause. Même si la régulation constitue un phénomène à vocation universelle, nous avons décidé de mettre les marchés financiers au centre de notre analyse. Cela parce que les secteurs régulés présentent une diversité de situations, de modalités d’action et de fondements qui empêchent une analyse d’ensemble. On a dit dans ce sens, que la légitimité de la régulation et des règles qu’elle pose ne peut pas être envisagée de manière abstraite ; elle doit être appréciée dans les rapports entre ses normes et l’objet régulé. Les marchés financiers sont, dans ce contexte, un laboratoire privilégié concernant l’expérimentation des nouvelles formes de régulation, ils se trouvent aux origines de leur usage et c’est précisément dans ces marchés que la remise en cause des nouvelles formes de régulation s’est posée. Notre étude concerne l’usage des nouvelles formes de régulation dans l’encadrement des marchés financiers dans six pays : la France, l’Angleterre, les États-Unis et trois pays latino-américains : le Mexique, la Colombie et le Chili. Les raisons de ce choix sont les suivantes. D’abord, il nous semble légitime d’aborder les législations qui se trouvent à l’origine des phénomènes ici analysés. Le modèle américain s’impose, mais aussi le modèle anglais, car il a été, pendant un moment, l’exemple le plus poussé du libéralisme économique, donc, des origines des nouvelles formes de régulation. La France était aussi une référence indispensable. En effet, comme nous voulons le montrer, la France est l’exemple le plus parfait de la quête d’un aboutissement de la logique de la régulation et de la systématisation, même si inachevée, du droit régulateur. Nous avons choisi le Mexique à cause de la taille de son marché financier, la Colombie, parce qu’elle a entrepris des réformes juridiques remarquables, et le Chili, car il est le pays le plus stable politiquement et économiquement dans le sud de l’Amérique latine
The legal systems of today are different than those that came into force 40 years ago. The assertion is applicable particularly to the economic areas under that a kind of law, known as regulatory systems. Indeed, a simple look at the contemporary law shows first; a rise in new entities which have the power of creation, the monitoring and the application of law and second; the existence of adjustments in the design and implementation of the standards that govern an activity, the development of soft law, self-regulation and standards, among other examples. This phenomenon, named new forms of regulation, which a few years ago was strongly praised by a part of legal doctrine, is now being questioned. Even if the regulation constitutes a universal phenomenon, we decided to focus in the financial markets. This is because the economic sectors under the regulatory systems have a diverse situations in terms of action and their fundamentals that hinders a comprehensive analysis. In this sense, it has been said that the regulatory systems rules legitimacy cannot be considered abstractly. This must be assessed by the relations between its standards and regulated objects. Financial markets are, in this context, a privileged test case concerning the experimentation of new forms of regulation. In these markets we found the origins of the use of soft law, self-regulation and other new forms of regulation, and it is precisely in the financial markets where that the disputes about the efficacy and the legitimacy arise about new forms of regulation. Our study concerns the use of new forms of regulation within the framework of the financial markets in six countries: France, England, the United States and three Latin American countries: Mexico, Colombia and Chile. The reasons for this choice are as follows. Firstly, it seems valid to look at the legislation where the new forms of regulation came from. The American model is needed, but also the English model, because it was, for a while, the more thorough example of economic liberalism, therefore a source of new forms of regulation. France is also an indispensable reference. Indeed, as we want to show it, France is the most perfect example of the quest for a culmination of logical regulation and systematization of regulatory law. We have chosen Mexico because of the size of its financial market; Colombia because it has undertaken remarkable legal reforms linked with the new forms of regulation and Chile, because it is the most stable country both politically and economically in the South of Latin America

Nous présentons dans cette thèse les évolutions apportées au solveur Galerkin Discontinu Teta-CLAC, issu de la collaboration IRMA-AxesSim, au cours du projet HOROCH (2015-2018). Ce solveur permet de résoudre les équations de Maxwell en 3D, en parallèle sur un grand nombre d'accélérateurs OpenCL. L'objectif du projet HOROCH était d'effectuer des simulations de grande envergure sur un modèle numérique complet de corps humain. Ce modèle comporte 24 millions de mailles hexaédriques pour des calculs dans la bande de fréquences des objets connectés allant de 1 à 3 GHz (Bluetooth). Les applications sont nombreuses : téléphonie et accessoires, sport (maillots connectés), médecine (sondes : gélules, patchs), etc. Les évolutions ainsi apportées comprennent, entre autres : l'optimisation des kernels OpenCL à destination des CPU dans le but d'utiliser au mieux les architectures hybrides ; l'expérimentation du runtime StarPU ; le design d'un schéma d'intégration à pas de temps local ; et bon nombre d'optimisations permettant au solveur de traiter des simulations de plusieurs millions de mailles
In this thesis, we present the evolutions made to the Discontinuous Galerkin solver Teta-CLAC – resulting from the IRMA-AxesSim collaboration – during the HOROCH project (2015-2018). This solver allows to solve the Maxwell equations in 3D and in parallel on a large amount of OpenCL accelerators. The goal of the HOROCH project was to perform large-scale simulations on a complete digital human body model. This model is composed of 24 million hexahedral cells in order to perform calculations in the frequency band of connected objects going from 1 to 3 GHz (Bluetooth). The applications are numerous: telephony and accessories, sport (connected shirts), medicine (probes: capsules, patches), etc. The changes thus made include, among others: optimization of OpenCL kernels for CPUs in order to make the best use of hybrid architectures; StarPU runtime experimentation; the design of an integration scheme using local time steps; and many optimizations allowing the solver to process simulations of several millions of cells

This, among other ways, could be done by formulating a code of conduct for learners. The purpose of this study was to find out the role of the School Governing Body in formulating the code of conduct for learners. The subjects of the study were the parent and teacher components of the School Governing Bodies. Data collection for this study included questionnaires which were completed by parents and teachers who are members of the School Governing Bodies. Such data has been used to analyze and interpret the role played by the School Governing Bodies in formulating the code of conduct for learners. Among others, the study found that some members of the School Governing Bodies were not aware about their respective roles in the formulation of codes of conduct for learners and the policy relating to the code of conduct for learners. However, some School Governing Bodies have adopted the Provincial guidelines on the code of conduct as the code of conduct for their schools. The study recommends that the members of the School Governing Bodies should be empowered through, among others, continuous training courses relating to their respective roles in school governance.

Cette thèse a cherché à présenter une description des versions de Midrash Séder Eliyahou tout en se polarisant sur la recherche de la version authentique, aussi précise que possible. Cette étude interdisciplinaire tente d'allier les aspects paléographiques des manuscrits, la langue hébraïque ainsi que la littérature comparée. Le corpus de ce Midrash contient six éléments manuscrits. Seul le Codex, BAV, Vat. ebr. 31 est complet et en excellent état. Les trois éditions imprimées complètes, sont celles de : Venise (1598), première édition, copie d'un incunable, Prague (1677) et de Vienne (1901), l'édition critique de Friedman, basée sur BAV, Vat. ebr.31. Nous avons choisi ce dernier comme référent. Nous proposons l'hypothèse suivante : La fidélité est pas uniforme, il y a deux dimensions de fidélité, pouvant sembler contradictoires : paléographique et / ou exégétique. L'étude de sources de la Genizah génère deux cas de figure possibles : Il y aurait soit une seule famille du Midrash Séder Eliyahou, plus ou moins fidèles à la version de BAV, Vat. ebr. 31. Soit il existerait une autre version de SER, inconnue et divergente de celle de Vatican 31, générant une ou plusieurs autres familles de manuscrits. Si la seconde hypothèse se vérifie, il pourrait s'agir d'un Midrash en formation. La version occidentale est entièrement développée et fixée tandis que la version orientale aurait été transmise oralement sans avoir atteint sa forme définitive
This thesis has sought to present a description of the versions of Midrash Seder Eliyyahu while polarizing on the search for the authentic version, as accurate as possible. This interdisciplinary study tries to use the palaeographic aspects of the manuscripts, the Hebrew language as well as comparative literature. The corpus of this Midrash contains six manuscripts elements. Only the Codex BAV, Vat. ebr. 31 is complete and in excellent condition. The three printed editions complete, are those of: Venice (1598), first edition, copy of incunabula, Prague (1677) and Vienna (1901), the critical edition of Friedman, based on BAV, Vat. ebr.31. This manuscript version was chosen as a referent. We propose the following hypothesis: The fidelity is not uniform, there are two loyalty dimensions, may seem contradictory : paleographic or/and exegetical. The study of the sources from the Genizah generated two possible cases : There would be only one family of the Midrash Seder Eliyyahu, referring to the version of BAV, Vat. ebr. 31. Either exist another version of SER, unknown and divergent from the Vatican 31, which will form one or more other family of manuscripts. If this second assumption proves true, Seder Eliyyahu could be a processing Midrash. The Western version is fully developed and secured while the eastern version be transmitted orally and not having reached its final form

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate English teachers’ communication when teaching English in grade three in Swedish schools. The investigation seeks to find out what language is, and why it is, dominant and how the proportions in the teachers’ uses of English and Swedish in time are distributed. The study also describes what attitudes teachers have to the English language and if, if so how, two categories of strategies, namely body language and code switching are used. The study was performed in two steps with different methods for collection of qualitative empirical data. The collection of the empirical data was carried out in structured observations and in structured interviews with four English teachers of whom two work in so called free and independent schools and two work in public schools. To obtain a complete picture of teachers’ English teaching the observations were conducted first to be followed by an additional interview. The results show that two of four English teachers dominantly speak English. The teachers’ motives for using English as educational language are that students need to hear the second language early to learn it. The teachers also report that code switching between Swedish and English and teaching in pupils’ levels help pupils to understand are motives for using Swedish as educational language. Several English teachers find it difficult to teach in the target language and they are therefore feeling an uncertainty in teaching English. Body language is more widely used by English teachers teaching in their second language. The English teacher, who speaks more English when teaching, use body language most frequently and teachers who have Swedish as the dominant language of instruction use code switching more often. Teachers' reasoning about the use of body language and code switching are for some knowingly and some unknowingly and is used by all respondents to illustrate and clarify. The teachers believe that there are both pros and cons of using code switching. Results also show that teachers who have worked the shortest time as an English teacher and work at free schools use English in English teaching to a greater extent than teachers who have taught English some time and work at public schools.
Syftet med forskningsstudien är att undersöka engelsklärares kommunikation vid engelskundervisning i årskurs tre i Mellansverige och att svara på frågorna vilket undervisningsspråk som är dominerande, varför det språket är dominerande, hur fördelningen mellan engelska och svenska ser ut samt hur användningen av språken ser ut i tid. Studien avser också att svara på vad lärare har för attityder till det engelska språket samt om, och i så fall hur, strategierna kroppsspråk och kodväxling används. Studien utfördes i två steg med olika metoder för insamling av kvalitativ empiri. Insamlingen av empiri utfördes genom strukturerade observationer av, samt halvstrukturerade respondentintervjuer med, fyra engelsklärare varav två arbetar vid friskolor och två är kommunalt anställda. För att få en helhetsbild av lärares engelskundervisning genomfördes observationerna först för att sedan efterföljas av en kompletterande intervju. Resultatet visar att endast två av fyra engelsklärare använder engelska som dominerande undervisningsspråk vid engelskundervisning. Flera respondenters motiv till att använda engelska som undervisningsspråk var att elever behöver höra språket från tidig ålder. Flera respondenters motiv till att använda svenska som undervisningsspråk var att översätta för att eleverna ska förstå samt för att hålla undervisningen på elevernas nivå. Många engelsklärare tycker det är svårt att undervisa på målspråket och känner därför en osäkerhet i att undervisa i engelskämnet. Kroppsspråket används i större utsträckning av engelsklärare som undervisar på andraspråket. Den engelsklärare som talar mest engelska använder kroppsspråket flitigast och de lärare som har svenska som dominerande undervisningsspråk kodväxlar mer. Lärarnas resonemang om användandet av kroppsspråk skiljer sig åt då det för vissa används medvetet och för vissa omedvetet. Kroppsspråket används av alla respondenter för att illustrera och tydliggöra någonting för eleverna. Lärarna anser att det finns både för och nackdelar med att använda kodväxling. Resultaten visar också att lärare som arbetat kortast tid som engelsklärare och arbetar på friskolor använder engelska vid engelskundervisning i högre grad än lärare som undervisat i engelska längre tid och arbetar vid kommunala skolor.

O PMV (Voto Médio Estimado) é um índice que pretende prever a sensação térmica das pessoas expostas a um mesmo ambiente. Entretanto, existem discrepâncias entre o modelo do PMV e as respostas de sensação térmica obtidas em estudos de campo efetuados para algumas populações. Um dos componentes para o cálculo do PMV é o isolamento térmico das vestimentas (Icl), que se utiliza da temperatura de superfície da vestimenta (tcl), que pode ser um fator que contribui para estas discrepâncias. Assim, esta pesquisa teve como objetivo apresentar um novo modelo de predição térmica minimizando as imprecisões das trocas térmicas pela correta determinação do tcl, utilizando-se do método de Newton. A coleta de dados contou com um grupo de soldadores, um grupo de trabalhadores de escritório desempenhando atividades sedentárias e um grupo de militares do exército português. Com a coleta de variáveis ambientais e pessoais no Brasil e em Portugal, esta pesquisa desenvolveu o Snovo1, por meio de um valor de tcl sem resíduos gerado pelo método de Newton e substituído nas parcelas de convecção e radiação de perda de calor e o Snovo2, mediante regressão múltipla entre os votos de sensação térmica coletados em estudo de campo, a taxa metabólica e os mecanismos de troca de calor. Depois do confronto entre a sensação térmica real e os valores de PMV calculados, para todos os grupos, os resultados encontrados com o Snovo1 e Snovo2 sempre foram melhores que os resultados encontrados com o PMV original de Fanger. O melhor resultado obtido nesta pesquisa foi com o grupo de militares, onde o Snovo2 apresentou uma melhoria de aproximadamente 46% em relação ao PMV original. Esta pesquisa comprovou que a temperatura superficial da vestimenta é uma variável de influência no modelo do PMV e minimizar imprecisões em sua obtenção diminui as discrepâncias entre os votos de sensação térmica e o PMV.
The PMV (Predicted Mean Vote) is an index which aims to predict the thermal sensation of people exposed to the same environment. However, there are discrepancies between the PMV model and thermal sensation responses obtained in field studies for some populations. One of the components for the calculation of PMV is the clothing insulation (Icl), which uses the clothing surface temperature (tcl), which can be a factor which contributes towards these discrepancies. Therefore, the aim of this research was to show the tcl influence on the PMV index. Thus, this research aimed to present a new thermal prediction model minimizing inaccuracies of thermal exchanges through the correct determination of tcl, by using Newton's method. Data collection featured a group of welders, a group of office workers performing sedentary activities and a group of Portuguese Army Military. Having collected environmental and personal variables in Brazil and Portugal, this research developed the Snew1, through a value of tcl without residues generated by Newton’s Method and replaced in convection and radiation heat loss equations and Snew2, through multiple regression between thermal sensation votes collected in field study, the metabolic rate and the mechanisms of heat exchange. After confrontation between the real thermal sensation and the calculated PMV values, for all groups, the results found with the Snew1 and Snew2 were always better than the results found with the Fanger’s Original PMV. The best result obtained in this research was with the military group, where the Snew2 presented an improvement about 46% over the original PMV. This search proved that the clothing surface temperature is a variable that influences the PMV model and minimizing inaccuracies in its obtaining decreases discrepancies between thermal sensation votes and PMV.

Many-body physics studies the collective behavior of systems with a large number of microscopic constituents. The interaction between the fundamental particles creates a common behavior within the system with emergent excitations exhibiting uncommon characteristics. In three spatial dimensions it has recently been found that a new kind of particles can exist characterized by a fractionalized mobility, being either immobile or mobile only along sub-dimensional spaces: fractons. In this thesis I explore fracton phases focusing on their topological and thermal properties. Fractons can be explained as a generalization of usual topological particles with some fundamental differences, which make fracton order a new field on its own. Fracton models are studied first from the point of view of exactly solvable lattice spin models, focusing on the similarities and differences with usual topological models. Fracton phases are also described through the use of symmetric tensor gauge theory. This gives a theoretical background which is used to explore some possible phases at finite densities of fractons, like Fermi liquids and quantum Hall states. The thermal properties of such systems are studied in detail through the use of numerical simulations relying on exact-diagonalization. Various correspondences with systems featuring quantum many-body scars are found, in particular with the PXP model. The non-thermal behavior of the models under study is justified by the fragmentation of the Hilbert space in a large number of separated sub-sectors, not related to symmetries of the model. Further, the range of the local Hamiltonian operators is found to be of fundamental relevance in the thermal properties of the system. For certain ranges it is observed that the models are not able to reach the thermal state at long times. Instead, increasing the length of interactions the system becomes ergodic, with the exception of a small number of special eigenstates which remain non-thermal.

New legal regulation of the private law contained in the New Civil Code and the Business Corporations Act has brought plenty of changes also in the status of a board of directors' member in a joint stock company. Both codes have brought new terminology, new institutes and clarification of the rules known from the legal regulation before the recodification. On one hand there is certain loosening in the decision making of statutory bodies of business corporations, on the other hand there is tightening of sanctions for cases of failure. This diploma thesis introduces major institutes of legal regulation related to the status of a board of directors' member and provides a basic comparison with the legal regulation before the recodification.

The presented work considers a CDMA-based Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) where multiple biosensors communicate simultaneously to a central node in an asynchronous fashion. The asynchronous nature of the WBAN introduces Multiple Access Interference (MAI). To combat this problem, presented is a methodology that uses a set of cyclically orthogonal spreading codes extracted from the Walsh-Hadamard matrix. When using the Cyclic Orthogonal Walsh-Hadamard Codes (COWHC) as spreading codes in the CDMA-based WBAN, the cyclic orthogonality property helps mitigate MAI amongst the on-body sensors. Presented is an ideal communication system that is most effective at mitigating MAI in proactive WBANs. The work illustrates the system optimality and effectiveness at mitigating MAI by studying the sensitivity to packet-loss through simulating the link Bit Error Rate (BER) performance. It is shown that the proposed design with COWHC, a Rayleigh flat-fading channel, BPSK modulation and a conventional receiver produce optimum MAI mitigation.

This creation explored the use of the printmaking creation style and the theme of “The Body Code to convey the illustrator’s diverse life changes and mental states. Using the illustrator’s personal living environment, the interactions and changes between the illustrator’s own body and the environment were recorded and observed in a microcosmic manner. These findings served as a starting point for creative thought and enabled exploration of the illustrator’s personal inner world. From this, the illustrator could then confront the inner self and discover the personal subconscious. Spiritual and mental concepts, as well as other emotions, were incorporated with medicine, herbs, body lesions, blood, and other elements and used as creative material. The entire progression of a disease from beginning to end was transformed to present emotions and experiences to create this work. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction which includes the motive and objective for creation and research. Literature analysis, observational research, creation research, and other practical methods are used to interpret and explain various objects and organize a framework for creation research. The second chapter, “Academic Basis” elaborates on personal memories of disease treatment. Using medical and traditional treatment perspectives, the principles and context regarding resistance, immunity, and other concepts are used express life and care for nature. Historical artists who suffered from physiological and psychological hardships are also explored and the works that were created from their struggles are used to gain insight. Finally, relevant artistic schools, aesthetics, and arts therapy during the process of artistic creation are discussed. The third chapter, “Art Creation”, expounds on the concepts, content, and form of creation, as well as the media and techniques that were used. The use of printmaking to convert thoughts, lesions, and other feelings into an impetus for creation is also described. In addition, the qualities and meaning of the artwork are presented. The fourth chapter, “Artwork Interpretation”, mainly analyzes the “Butterfly Rash series” and the “Metanoia series”. The contents of these works are explained, and their creation themes are deciphered. Lastly, the fifth chapter, the conclusion, reflects and examines the experience and outcomes of creation and research. Further creation and exploration of life realizations and microcosmic objects are also used as creative inspiration, integrating the functional extensions and development of artistic therapy.

In recent years, the portable healthcare devices are more and more popular. The wireless transmissions are widely used in these devices, such as Bluetooth and ZigBee. However, these techniques have drawbacks of high power consumption and have interferences in the shared frequency band, Therefore, body channel communication (BCC) is proposed because it has relatively low power consumption and has less interferences. The proposed BCC transceiver which using Walsh codes as modulated codes is implemented on the Vurtex-7 VC707 evaluation board (EVB). The Walsh codes are orthogonal codes and the maximum number of error bits that can be tolerated can be up to half of the code’s length. Moreover, the CID of the Walsh codes are limited to 2 to avoid the no data transition situation which makes the receiver difficulty to recover the clock and data. There are no error bits occurred when transmitting 108 bits at 140 cm distance and at data rate of 488 Kbps (3.12 Mcps), 976 Kbps (6.25 Mcps), and 1.95 Mbps (12.5 Mcps). Moreover, the BER is 10-5 at 3.9 Mbps (12.5 Mcps). In the proposed BCC transceiver, because of high data reliability, the multi-media transmission is supported. The image can be completely transmitted and received through 140 cm distance and the maximum data rate is 1.95 Mbps.

This dissertation studies how the “female body” in the historiography of both art theory and art practice presents the inscription of body in contemporary era. How do the historical theories of differences between male and female viewpoints connect to the female body of contemporary art? Since the researcher is also the creator of art works dealing with female body issues, both the thesis and the art works explored issues of the dialectics between materialism and anti-materialism, identity recognition, political power, and created image. This study also investigates the connection between the creators and the codes of body inscription, as to how the art works reflect cultural concerns and societal phenomena, while exploring what kind of cultural codes are being extended for art works. This study focuses mainly on how the body image presents its own connotation in the visual art. In the discussion constellated by “gaze”, it analyses how men often see and define “female body” from the historical points of view. Regarding the dominance of men's viewpoints and power, as well as the debates and confinements initiated by the gaze, the “female body” will be deconstructed and reconstructed from women’s expressions. This study is divided into six chapters. Chapter One is “Introduction”, explicating the subject and purpose of the research, including issues of thesis discussion, literature review, research method, and research scope and design. In this chapter, I lay up the basic structure of thesis and the key points that the dissertation would like to explore and examine. .Chapter Two is “Historical/ Theoretical Female Body”. It focuses on the “gaze” in the cultural inscription, expressing the important impacts that these viewpoints have on woman’s cultural body from post-modern women theorists’ responses and viewpoints to the “woman definition” from the men’s culture. Chapter Three, “Female Body’s Image and the Body Inscription,” discusses the development of the art of female body, the aspects of the cultural inscription that the male creators expressed in creating the female body, as well as how the female creators cum readers find the location and content in the cultural inscription when re-reading and re-making the male content. It also focuses on the body description in cultural inscription, such as writings of Bourdieu, Foucault, and Butler, to discuss the political domain and power that the body involved in and henceforth developing codes of being both limited and inscripted. Chapter Four, “Body Image of Contemporary Cultural Inscription”, discusses the body images of contemporary cultural inscription from the perspectives of reification and counter-objectification, identity recognition, power politics, and paradigmatic iconography formation in the images of female body. Chapter Five is titled- “Body Images and Creative Strategies in the Art Works of the Researcher”. Looking closely at seven pieces/series of my art works since 2003 in terms of motivation, description and interpretation, while integrating both theoretical discourses and creative praxis, this chapter positions and examines my own art works in terms of three primers within the frameworks of female body inscription. They are (1) Subversive strategies of presentation by reverting and replacing the intangible metaphor with concrete materiality; (2) Inscribing female body with visible invisibility in the unrepresentable space across both Eastern and Western body of tropes; (3) Embossing and emboldening the inscription of female body image against the indoctrination process of gendered discourses. Chapter Six, Conclusion- Extension of the Cultural Codes. This chapter concludes the thesis by recontextulaizing the cultural codes of female body while raising the question as how to extend both the utilization and critique of cultural codes in the artistic creation by women artists. It discusses metaphorization and intertextuality of semiotics, connection between the extension of cultural codes and the new meanings brought forth by the researcher and her contemporary women artists using cultural codes for creation. Through studying theories related to the creation of art works by women artists, this thesis maps out the art creation theories of contemporary artists in general while positioning the researcher within the theoretical coordinates and coevolution of the art of body inscription in particular. It compares the discussions between the male and female theorists focusing on how the creator can mobilize the power of the visual art to surpass the gaze of the female body. Further, it outlines the issues of female body raised by post-modern feminism and underscores the expression and discussion centering on the development of the inscription of female body. Through out the research, the dissertation compares and finds the places for the researcher to participate in. In addition, the study observes the body image and phenomenon from the intertextuality of culture and the art, finds out and explains how to extend the female body as the cultural code.

SUMMARY The body interest in Republic of China criminal law protects physical organ function, tissue integrity, and psychological soundness. However, can the organ separated from the body be protected in Republic of China criminal law? With the advance of medical technology, it is worthwhile to discuss. This thesis focuses on the fields which are related to body rights and discusses its nature and meaning in law. Then we can picture the range of its protection. Therefore, I will intend to study the theses related to psychology, philosophy, and biology and depict the idea of body in these fields. In the end, I will explain it from biological point of view and from Japanese law to redefine the range of body interest. Finally, I will try to discuss whether the idea of body rights can be applied to the 3 dimensions printed organ, so that we can set the rules to regulate the harmful act as to the transplanting organs. Furthermore, the idea of property should be involved in some conditions and make transplanted organs become a part of property.

With the rapid development of technology, the market for wearable devices market is booming and brings many business opportunities. To facilitate the operation, the connection between the devices also abandons the physical line and adopts wireless transmission technology. At present, mature wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, and Wifi can provide stable transmission, but they have the disadvantages of high power consumption and many interferences in the same frequency band. Therefore, the human body is used as a transmission medium. A new technology called body channel communication (BCC) was proposed. The BCC has the advantages of being less susceptible to interferences from the external environment and lower power. Also, since the signal is quickly attenuated as soon as it leaves the human body, it has the advantage of preventing eavesdropping. In this paper, a human body channel transmission transceiver using a 16-times oversampling clock and data recovery circuit and the convolutional code is proposed and implemented in TSMC 90nm CMOS process. The data are encoded by the convolutional code on the transmission side, and then the bit stuffer and NRZI code are used to make the transmission more reliable, and the CRC32 check code is added. At the receiver part, there is a 16-times oversampling clock and data recovery circuit to recover the clock and the, and then, the data are decoded by the Viterbi decoder. Finally, the correctness of the packet data is checked by the CRC32 check code. The BCC transceiver proposed in this thesis can provide stable transmission speed of 5 Mbps and has excellent data jitter tolerance.

Nowadays, portable entertainment and healthcare devices has developed rapidly because of the advance semiconductor fabrication process. For the chronic patients, the wireless healthcare devices brings a lot of convenience. In general, the wireless radio frequency (RF) communication has drawbacks of high power consumption and sensitive to interferences. Body channel communication (BCC) uses the human body as a transmission medium which is more stable and has less power consumption. However, the body antenna effects causes interferences in human body. In this thesis, a wideband signal BCC transceiver using the convolutional encoding method is implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) in order to verify the feasibility of the proposed design. In the transmitter side, the data will be encoded by convolutional encoding method and then modulated by a bit-stuffer and a NRZI modulator. The modulated data are transmitted directly to a human body through a SMA cable and an electrode. In the receiver side, the oversampling phase detection CDR will recover the clock and data. By means of using convolutional encoding method to increase the data reliability, there are no error bits occurred over 108 bits received at data rate 3.125 Mbps( 6.25Mcps ) in transmission distance under 140 cm. According to the experimental results, the proposed BCC transceiver is suitable for healthcare and entertainment devices.

Memory serves an integral function in every aspect of human life. Losing that function can be adevastating consequence of disease, dementia, and trauma. In order to develop treatments or prophylactics for memory disorders we must identify the neural basis of memory. Animal research has made prominent strides studying the neural correlates of memory by examining the more easily observable and manipulable neural correlates of spatial context, since the brain regions necessary for declarative memory intersect profoundly with those needed for spatial navigation. My research has two main goals. My first two studies, in Chapters 2 and 3, translate animal research relating the neural correlates of space to memory processes, and go beyond animal work to explore how internal features of experience such as goal states influence these conjunctive representations of space and memory. In Chapter 4, I expand my scope to examine how another internal feature, emotional context, affects the same brain regions on a network level to influence memory representations in the human brain. To perform these studies I recorded directly from the human brain in epilepsy patients performing a variety of memory tasks. First, I measured single-neuron activity as subjects navigated a virtual environment, encountering various objects at unique locations. As subjects moved through the environments, they were instructed to recall the locations of specific objects they encountered—I identified neurons in the human entorhinal cortex, called “memory-trace cells”, which selectively activated near the object-location that people were instructed to retrieve from memory. This is the first evidence that neurons in the brain can be tuned to the spatial context of an event for memory, and demonstrated a direct link between memory retrieval and the spatial tuning properties of neurons. For my second study, I examined whether spatially-tuned neurons in the MTL discharge at intervals organized by theta (2–10 Hz) oscillations (which represent network level brain-activity). I identified a particular pattern that is prominent in rodents, called “phase precession”, during which spatially-tuned neurons spike slightly faster than the network oscillation, and which is theorized to hold great value throughout the brain for learning and memory. In addition to discovering this pattern for spatial sequences, I discovered that phase precession was also present during more abstract features of experience, like the specific goal a person was seeking. These findings suggest that principles of network-level brain activity for organizing spatial navigation may extend to humans, and to broader forms of cognition and memory. Finally, I examined the role of the amygdala in memory encoding during a verbal episodic memory task, finding that the emotional context of a word influenced the probability of its subsequent recall. By measuring the prevalence and coordination of brain oscillations in the amygdala-hippocampal circuit, I found that gamma oscillations (30–120 Hz) increased in both regions as a function of word arousal and encoding success, and connectivity within the amygdala-hippocampal circuit also showed significant theta-gamma coupling as a function of memory and high arousal. Furthermore, direct 50 Hz stimulation impaired memory for high arousal words. These findings suggest a causal relationship between gamma oscillations in the amygdala-hippocampal circuit for memory as a function of emotional context during encoding. My work generalizes important neuronal principles from animal studies to humans (such as spatially-tuned neurons and phase precession), but also extends those findings more deeply to memory, and to internal/subjective aspects of memory that are difficult to directly measure in animals. Overall this work represents an important step towards understanding how the human brain enables declarative memory.

Owing to the fact that students do not have so much interest in plants on campus, which are, however, closely related to humans, and play a vital part in Grade 1-9 Curriculum, this study designed a set of teaching activities in hopes of motivating them to learn and helping them to have a better understanding of plant body structure –utilizing the tablet computer together with QR Code to carry out the teaching activities and discussing the differences inthe third graders’ learning effectiveness between conducting the Unit“The Plant’s Body” with the combination of the tablet computer and QR Code and the traditional teaching method. This research included 93 third graders from four classes in an elementary school in New Taipei City. With the quasi-experimental method, two classes regarded as the experimental group received the designed activities –applying the tablet computer with QR Code to teaching, while the other two classes as the control group accepted the traditional teaching method. Both the pre-test and post-test for students’academic achievement and learning attitudes were taken before and after the teaching, followed by further analysis of the scores. Other than that, the experimental group was asked to complete a learning satisfaction survey into learning with the tablet computer and QR Code. The results were as follows: 1.Teaching the Unit of “Plants’ Body” with the tablet computer and QR Code can enhancethe third graders’ learning effectiveness. 2.Teaching the Unit of “Plants’ Body” with the tablet computer and QR Code made no significant difference in the third graders’ science learning attitudes from the traditional teaching method. 3.The low achievers of experimental group had greater learning effectiveness than the low achievers of control group after learning with the combination of the tablet computer and QR Code. 4.Most feedback from the students who received the designed teaching was positive.

Dans cette thèse de doctorat, “Mapping the Captive Body in Three Twenty- First Century Diasporic Women’s Writings,” j’analyse le fonctionnement du pouvoir de l’État en relation avec le corps, comme le montrent les mémoires de Edwidge Danticat, Azar Nafisi and Marina Nemat. En m’appuyant sur leurs écrits, j’explore les différentes manières dont la violence, la dictature, et le patriarcat, parrainés par l’État, modifient les constructions du corps, de l’esprit, de la voix et de la subjectivité. En examinant ces formes institutionnalisées de violence et de coercition, je montre comment le confinement physique engendre la captivité de l’esprit et la dé(con)struction de soi. Ainsi, je conceptualise la captivité comme étant physique, psychologique mais aussi sociale. En outre, je soutiens que la lutte pour résister à cet effacement identitaire afin de récupérer la subjectivité et la corporealité prend la forme d’une action individuelle et/ou collective. Le premier chapitre contextualise les oeuvres étudiées pendant le règne de deux Duvaliers, de Khomeini, en plus de la politique d’immigration des Etats-Unis après le 11 septembre. En outre, ce chapitre fournit le cadre théorique. Le deuxième chapitre est consacré à l’analyse l’emprisonnement et la privation des droits fondamentaux de Joseph Dantica, soulevant ainsi des questions sur le biopouvoir qui définit le Centre de Détention de Krome. Je montre comment Edwidge Danticat a récupéré l’identité de son oncle à titre posthume. Le troisième chapitre étudie la captivité des femmes engendrée par la surveillance et l’imposition d’un code vestimentaire. J’analyse aussi comment Nafisi et ses étudiantes prennent refuge dans la littérature afin de résister. Dans le dernier chapitre, je regarde comment la prison régularise le genre et l’identité de Nemat. Je soutiens que le viol conjugual, étant une violence politique liée au genre, devient un moyen par lequel la soumission et la domination de Nemat deviennent possibles. Enfin, la dernière partie étudie l’importance de l’amitié carcérale et de l’acte de l’écriture dans la résistance à et la défiance de l’effacement.
In my doctorat project, entitled “Mapping the Captive Body in Three Diasporic Women’s Writings,” I analyze the workings of state power in relation to the body, as illustrated in the works of Edwidge Danticat, Azar Nafisi and Marina Nemat. I explore the different ways state-sponsored violence, dictatorship and patriarchy alter the very constructions of body, mind, voice, and subjectivity. By considering these institutionalized forms of violence and coercion, I demonstrate how physical confinement engenders the captivity of the mind and the de(cons)truction of the self. In so doing, I conceptualize captivity as physical, psychological and social. In addition, I contend that the struggle to resist this erasure and reclaim subjectivity and corporeality takes the forms of individual, communal, and/ or collective action. The first chapter contextualizes and historicizes the studied works with the era the Duvalier, Khomeini’s dictatorship, in addition to the post 9/11 US immigration policies. It also provides the theoretical framework that frames this dissertation. The second chapter focuses on Joseph Dantica’s imprisonment and disfranchisement and raises questions about the biopwer that defines Krome Detention Center. I demonstrate the way Edwidge Danticat posthumously recover her uncle’s identity. The third chapter studies female captivity in terms of forced veiling and constant surveillance. I analyze how Nafisi and her students take refuge in and resist through the power of literature. In the fourth chapter, I look at how prison regulates Nemat’s gender and identity. I argue that marital rape, as a gendered political violence, becomes a means through which Nemat’s subjection and domination is possible. The second part of the chapter explores the importance of carceral friendship and the act of writing in defying and resisting erasure.

The scope of the Administrative Procedure Code Abstrakt The Administrative Procedure Code as a code of activity of public administration is not a novelty in our legal system, but perhaps that is exactly why it is appropriate to consider how far its scope of application extends. Although the definition of the scope of the Administrative Procedure Code is regulated in the first section of the Act, a closer examination will probably reveal many ambiguities or doubts as to how far its limits extend. And it is precisely the detailed breakdown of the circumstances to which the Administrative Procedure Code is applicable and under what conditions it will apply, which I have set as my goal of this rigorosum thesis. The scope of the Administrative Procedure Code can be examined from two points of view. This thesis uses the impact of Chiling Lin to analyse the representation of the female body in Taiwan, and to examine whether women are manipulated under the male hegemony or they have a way against it. First, Foucault's discipline is applied to discuss how the female body is disciplined and how the impact of Chiling Lin is formed. Furthermore, the author adopts Lacan's Mirror Stage and Symbolic Order to analyse the reason why the female bodies are coded. Finally, it is analysed that the existence of the female anti-manipulation by means of Brecht's Verfremdungseffekt and Social Gestus.
