Abstract:

Our life with Ezio and Memories of War, written by Flora Aghib Levi D’Ancona traces the life of her husband Ezio Levi, a Jewish Italian philologist and hispanist, their experiences of exile in the US where the couple fled after the racial laws. Completed with a historiographical introduction and an appendix of unpublished letters, the volume traces Ezio’s path as a Jewish intellectual in Fascist Italy, his role as a cultural mediator of Spanish contemporary literature to Italy, the trauma of the racial laws, and the challenges of the American exile. Expression of a women’s exile literature, the pages reflect the authors experience as a mother writing for her children left in Italy and of an intellectual Italian Jewish woman dealing with the challenges of exile and memory.

Letta in continuità con le precedenti pubblicazioni Osdotta, questa consente di seguire quanto si va sviluppando nel terzo livello di formazione in un momento particolarmente critico per l'istituzione universitaria, continuando a porre l'accento sul nodo domanda/offerta di ricerca, nel confronto con altre istituzioni e con il mondo della produzione di settore, nell'attuale scenario dominato da trasformazioni sempre più rapide e incisive. La qualificazione dei corsi di dottorato, attraverso la riflessione sugli esiti immediati e a lungo termine, parallelamente alla precisazione dei contenuti identitari del settore disciplinare, restano le principali sfide da continuare ad affrontare. This publication provides considerable material for reflection on the subject of Mediterranean Architecture between Heritage and Innovation, demonstrating the wide range of aspects linked to Architectural Technology, in which one is struck by the flexibility of the disciplinary boundaries with regard to the various meanings that can be applied to the concept of resource. Taken together with the previous publications of Osdotta, this consents one to trace the developments in the third level of education at a particularly critical time for the university institution; the emphasis continues to be placed on the crucial issue of supply/demand of research; the situation is compared with other institutions and with the world of production in this sector, in a present-day scenario dominated by ever more rapid and incisive transformations. The main challenges left to be faced are to improve the quality of PhD courses, after due reflection on the immediate and long-term results, whilst defining more precisely the identitary contents of the disciplinary sector.

Abstract:

The diagnosis of brain death is based on a comprehensive neurological evaluation. First, physicians need to eliminate confounders to the clinical examination. Once excluded, a set of neurological tests and a formal apnea test (to document absent respiratory drive after CO2 challenge) often will suffice. Second, ancillary tests may be needed if some parts of the neurological examination cannot be accurately assessed. This chapter provides a full discussion of the clinical criteria in adults and children and is modeled after the guidelines of the American Academy of Neurology and the 2011 definition of pediatric brain death by a joint task force of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Child Neurology Society.

The Chief Executive of the Plunkett Foundation, which supports some of the world’s smallest community-based co-operatives in rural areas, looks at what the larger co-operatives and mutuals can learn from them. He explores five different approaches that a co-operative can take (trust-based approach, corporate-governance-based approach, competence-based approach, values-based approach, and open co-operatives approach) and considers the implications of each. The chapter explores how these ideas have evolved since the earliest days of co-operatives and mutuals and how they might continue to evolve in the future. Written in December 2014, it argues that co-operative education has a vital role to play in ensuring robust governance structures in co-operatives and mutuals.

[Abstract] The 6th International Workshop on Rock Physics (6IWRP) was held A Coruña, Spain, between 13th and 17th of June, 2022. This meeting follows the track of the five successful encounters held in Golden (USA, 2011), Southampton (UK, 2013), Perth (Australia, 2015), Trondheim (Norway, 2017) and Hong Kong (China, 2019). The aim of the workshop was to bring together experiences allowing to illustrate, discuss and exchange recent advances in the wide realm of rock physics, including theoretical developments, in situ and laboratory scale experiments as well as digital analysis. While rock physics is at the core of the oil & gas industry applications, it is also essential to enable the energy transition challenge (e.g. CO2 and H2 storage, geothermal), ensure a safe and adequate use of natural resources and develop efficient waste management strategies. The topics of 6IWRP covered a broad spectrum of rock physics-related research activities, including: • Experimental rock physics. New techniques, approaches and applications; Characterization of the static and dynamic properties of rocks and fluids; Multiphysics measurements (NMR, electrical resistivity…); Deep/crustal scale rock physics. • Modelling and multiscale applications: from the lab to the field. Numerical analysis and model development; Data science applications; Upscaling; Microseismicity and earthquakes; Subsurface stresses and tectonic deformations. • Coupled phenomena and rock properties: exploring interactions. Anisotropy; Flow and fractures; Temperature effects; Rock-fluid interaction; Fluid and pressure effects on geophysical signatures. • The energy transition challenge. Applications to energy storage (hydrogen storage in porous media), geothermal resources, energy production (gas hydrates), geological utilization and storage of CO2, nuclear waste disposal. • Rock physics templates: advances and applications. Quantitative assessment; Applications to reser voir characterization (role of seismic wave anisotropy and fracture networks). • Advanced rock physics tools. Machine learning; application of imaging (X-ray CT, X-ray μCT, FIB-SEM…) to obtain rock proper ties. This book compiles more than 50 abstracts, summarizing the works presented in the 6IWRP by rock physicists from all over the world, belonging to both academia and industry. This book means an updated overview of the rock physics research worldwide.

Abstract:

Malignant hyperthermia, the neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), and the serotonin syndrome are the principal disorders associated with life-threatening hyperthermia in the intensive care unit. While each is a clinically unique entity, all can progress to multisystem organ dysfunction with acidosis, shock, and death. MH usually results from exposure to halogenated volatile anaesthetics and/or succinylcholine and symptoms of increased CO2 production and respiratory acidosis progress rapidly without prompt intervention, including the administration of dantrolene. NMS is a syndrome of rigidity and altered mental status seen most commonly in patients being treated with antipsychotic medications. The serotonin syndrome is seen in patients treated with serotonergic agents including selective serotonin reuptake or monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants. The salient clinical finding is clonus, but agitation, altered mental status and autonomic dysfunction are common. Recognizing the non-specific features of these syndromes presents a challenge as they are life-threatening if not treated promptly and correctly with specific therapies.

Abstract:

This chapter is dedicated to the challenges which the VCDR, fifty years into its existence, faces in a world marked by a globalized economy and rapid technological developments. The author reflects on new diplomatic processes which have emerged through the creation of governmental and non-governmental institutions and on notions such as collaborative, public, and cultural diplomacy which have challenged accepted understandings of the role and functions of traditional diplomacy. Barker also explores the fact that international law itself is changing from a system regulating co-existing sovereignties to a possibly fragmented discourse of complex frameworks which themselves challenge the sovereignty paradigm. In this context, he investigates the continued relevance and purpose of the VCDR and gives particular focus to existing mechanisms within the Convention that allow for modified and developed interpretations of the Convention to take account of the changing international world in which contemporary diplomacy operates.

Enquadramento: A Revisão da Literatura é uma etapa importante em qualquer projeto de pesquisa. Saber fazer uma revisão por meio de ferramentas digitais pode potenciar a colaboração entre pesquisadores e deste modo obter resultados mais relevantes. Nos ambientes digitais o trabalho colaborativo é essencial para a criação de conhecimentos; deste modo, utilizar ferramentas que permitam o compartilhamento de saberes, experiências e recursos é uma via de melhorar a Revisão da Literatura. Objetivos: Apresentar uma Revisão da Literatura feita por meio de ferramentas digitais; reportar os passos sequenciais desta trajetória; refletir sobre a utilização do webQDA para análise qualitativa de Revisão da Literatura. Organização do capítulo: O capítulo inicia com uma breve introdução sobre o tema, seguida pela sessão de apresentação de Revisão da Literatura com o apoio de ferramenta digital. Nesta sessão, serão abordadas as principais etapas de uma revisão e de que maneira se aplicam ao webQDA. Complementarmente, é apresentada um exemplo de análise bibliométrica. Ao final é realizada uma reflexão sobre o desenvolvimento da Revisão da Literatura com o apoio das ferramentas digitais, destacando as principais potencialidades do uso desta tecnologia para a produção de sínteses qualitativas. Considerações finais: As ferramentas digitais despontam como um importante apoio aos pesquisadores para a elaboração da Revisão da Literatura, principalmente nas etapas de seleção, tratamento e síntese dos estudos. Essas ferramentas também favorecem a otimização da organização dos dados, a transparência do percurso metodológico e a credibilidade das evidências científicas. O estudo também revela novas oportunidades de investigação a partir da combinação de diferentes abordagens metodológicas, como a análise bibliométrica (quantitativa) e a análise de conteúdo (qualitativa).

Abstract:

This chapter tracks the role of Brotherhood affiliates after the so-called Arab Spring, with the aim of understanding how they function in the present day and how they were affected by the developments of 2011–2012, as well as the fall of the Muhammad Mursi government in Egypt. It shows the resilience and flexibility of rentier Islamists, in particular as political conditions have changed. As the regimes of the super-rentiers have limited the institutional involvement of the Brotherhood, either through co-optation or crackdown, the Brotherhood remained an influential cultural force for its appeal within conservative societies whose governments were becoming increasingly modern and Western-leaning.

This book provides an overview of the hospitality industry in Sabah. The first three chapters discuss the accommodation industry in Sabah. In the first chapter, Yuzainy Janin highlights the roles, jurisdiction, and dilemma of the organisational actors in the budget hotel segment in Sabah. The following chapter, written by Izyanti Awang Razli and her co-authors, elaborates on the peer-to-peer accommodation in Sabah and what motivates people to become a host. Chapter 3 by Arif @ Kamisan Pusiran discusses the development of budget accommodation in Sabah. The food and beverage industry is highlighted in Chapters 4, 5, and 6 of this book. Mazalan Mifli sets the tone in his examination of the foodservice industry in Malaysia in Chapter 4, followed by a discussion of the green kopitiam concept and customer perception by Juliana Langgat and her co-authors in Chapter 5. The following Chapter 6 by Marry Tracy Pawan focuses on the street food consumption in Kota Kinabalu. In Chapter 7, the determinants of guest experiences in island resorts are discussed by Andi Tamsang Andi Kele and her co-authors.

Abstract:

As the world battles with the triple problems of social, economic, and environmental challenges, it has become important to focus both policy and research efforts on these. Therefore, this study examines the effect of wealth inequality on CO2 emissions in five emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The top decile of wealth share was used as a measure of wealth inequality, while CO2 emissions per capita were used as a measure of CO2 emissions. GDP per capita, population, and financial development (domestic credit to the private sector) were included as control variables. A balanced panel dataset of annual observations from 2000 to 2014 for these countries was used. Both fixed and random effects panel models were estimated, but the Hausman test favoured the use of the fixed effects model. The results based on the fixed effects panel regression model show that wealth inequality, GDP per capita, and population have positive effects on CO2 emissions, while financial development has a negative effect.
