Abstract:

Abstract:
This study analyses the possible relationships between body size and length of cnidae from different tissues of the sea anemone Oulactis muscosa. We describe the cnidom, providing new qualitative and quantitative data. Our description adds spirocysts for tentacles and acrorhagi, and is more precise about the ranges and types of basitrichs, microbasic b-mastigophores, and holotrichs. We distinguish two types of holotrichs in the acrorhagi, and differentiate between microbasic b-mastigophores and basitrichs in the actinopharynx and mesenterial filaments. A relationship between cnida length and body weight was not demonstrated. The results are based on a complete account of cnida types from all tissues, and considering the great number of capsules measured (5400) and the modern statistical tools employed, we think that a normal distribution of cnida lengths is uncommon, perhaps refuted. This finding is very important when a quantitative analysis of cnidae is necessary and an adequate statistical tool must be used. We have shown that generalized linear models are an alternative and therefore analyses can be done with parametric methods despite the non-normal distribution of cnida size. The use of these statistical tools should be generalized since appropriate package for analyses (like the R package) are available from the web and the obtained results are robust and powerful.

Abstract:
Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) is a common condition causing excessive tearing or mucoid discharge from the eyes, due to blockage of the nasolacrimal duct system. Nasolacrimal duct obstruction affects as many as 20% children aged <1 year worldwide and is often resolved without surgery. Available treatment options are conservative therapy, including observation, lacrimal sac massage and antibiotics, and invasive therapy. Observation, combined with conservative options, seems to be the best option in infants aged <1 year. Meanwhile, in children aged >1 year, nasolacrimal probing successfully addresses most obstructions. However, the most favorable timing for probing remains controversial. To alleviate persistent epiphora and mucous drainage that is refractory to probing, repeat probing, silicone tube intubation, balloon catheter dilation or dacryocystorhinostomy can be considered as available treatment options. Our review aims to provide an update to CNDO management protocols.

Abstract:
Abstract Aim To examine the success rate and factors affecting the effect of conservative treatment for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) in children. Methodology A prospective study was made on 167 eyes of 131 patients with clinical signs of CNLDO. All of them were initially treated nonsurgically with Crigler massage. The curative effect of this management was evaluated on the basis of no history of watery eyes, negative regurgitation test, and dye disappearance test 0 or 1 grade. Exploratory analyses assessed whether baseline characteristics including age, gender and laterality were associated with the probability of CNLDO resolving without surgery. If the nonsurgical treatment failed, probing was done in the Eye Clinic in Pleven. Results The conservative treatment for CNLDO with Crigler massage was successful in the majority of treated cases – in 115 out of 167 eyes with CNLDO (68,9%). The remaining 52 (31,1%) eyes were probed. Age (p = 0,001) and laterality (p = 0,001) were found to be associated with resolution of the clinical signs. Conclusions Nonsurgical management for CNLDO was successful initial treatment in patients with this pathology. The Crigler massage was more effective in children up to 12 months of age with unilateral obstruction.

Abstract:
Background/aimsThe literature on the prevalence and demographics of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) is 30–70 years old and largely comprises small sample sizes. This study provides epidemiological findings of this common disorder from the largest cohort reported to date.MethodsThe medical records of all children (<5 years of age) residing in Olmsted County, Minnesota, when diagnosed with CNLDO from 1 January 1995 through 31 December 2004, were reviewed.ResultsOf 17 713 newborns born during the 10-year study period, 1998 were diagnosed with CNLDO, yielding a birth prevalence of one in nine live births. The diagnosis was made in approximately 90% by a primary care physician, at a median age of 5 weeks, with no gender predilection. Compared with the reference population, CNLDO was associated with premature birth (p=0.005) and was more prevalent among Caucasians (p<0.001). Two-thirds of patients initially presented with discharge alone, 18% with tearing alone and 15% with both discharge and tearing.ConclusionsIn this large population-based cohort, CNLDO occurred in one in nine live births with no gender predilection. Prematurity and Caucasian race were associated with the development of CNLDO. Mucopurulent discharge was a much more common feature than tearing at initial presentation.

<strong>Introduction:</strong> Congenital NasoLacrimal Duct Obstruction (CNLDO) is a frequent entity in the paediatric age. CNLDO has a 20% to 30% incidence rate out of which only 1% to 6% become symptomatic.1 The 4% of premature infants are affected with CNLDO.2 The management of failed Crigler's Sac massage is probing, secondary probing, external DCR and with or without intubation is well known to all. To avoid the sequelae of CNLDO, cure of CNLDO is mandatory. Hence the aim of the study is primary cure for CNLDO by using specific treatment of Crigler's Sac massage with Oil is emphasised. <strong>Method:</strong> This study was about 140 eyes and in each group, 70 eyes were enrolled with lost to follow up considerations. Patients had been selected and randomised alternatively when visited ophthalmology OPD. The CNLDO patients were selected from the age group ranged 1 to 9 months. Follow up of all patients was taken every month up to 15 months of age. Each and every patient from both the groups had to complete the formality of clinical consultation, doctors counselling to parents specially mothers explaining the procedure of sac massage and taking a live demonstration by mother/ parent hence confirming the proper technique to be followed at home. <strong>Results:</strong> In group A, Standard Crigler's Method was used only on 54 eyes out of enrolment of 70 eyes. In group B, Standard Method with add on therapy of oil massage had been given to 66 eyes out of 70. In group B, cure rate was found in 60(91%) which was significantly differing from the cure rate of group A 30(56%) by Standard Crigler's Method at P&lt;0.001. Complications were found in 20 eyes in group A and in group B only one patient showed complication unrelated to the treatment of CNLDO used by the patients in this group. No significant difference was seen in the sex distribution in relation to CNLDO at P&gt;0.05. <strong>Conclusion:</strong> The primary need of Crigler's Sac Massage using Oil has given the importance towards good compliance and success of curing CNLDO.

Montagner, Emanuele. "Il culto di Apollo Carneo." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trieste, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10077/3496.

Abstract:
2008/2009

This dissertation presents two essays on the relationship between technical change and the natural environment. In the first essay, we discuss the view of technical progress to four representatives of Classical Political Economy: William Petty, Adam Smith, David Ricardo and Karl Marx. This essay analyzes the form they approach the technical progress, characterized by the increasing adoption of machinery in the production process, adding up the view of each author regarding land and natural resources in the growth of nations. While the technical progress concept evolves from the first to the last author, nature?s view is distinct. Petty and Marx define the natural environment as a part of a natural law and as a part of human essence, respectively. Smith and Ricardo reduce natural environment to an input, making it the main economic growth limiter for the latter. In the second essay, we analyze the technical progress and the production of good and bad outputs in Brazilian economy in the 1970-2008 period. We adopt a study system of production and technical progress based on a classical-Marxian perspective, in which the work, capital and energy input combination generates a good output, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and a bad output, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. We divide Brazilian economic growth in four phases, according to the development strategy adopted in each period: 1970-1980, 1980-1989, 1989-2003 and 2003-2008. The predominant pattern of technical progress was Marx-biased and energy-saving. In GDP growth years, the bad output also increased.

The present work aims to analyze the several proportional electoral systems from the contemporaries democracies in order to, in the end, purpose a system that better fits to the constitutional Brazilian order. In this direction, we pursued to indicate the main virtues and imperfections in proportional electoral systems in use in more than two hundred countries, especially relating to the positive and negative effects that these systems inject in the party systems, in the governability and in the representativity. In order to collect elements, and also before getting to the work s main point, other issues were approached, even in a shortened way. Nevertheless, in a position taking, we conclude the work opting for a proportional electoral system that potencializes the constitutional principles of representativity and governability as well as prints a party system strong and strict, once these are the depositaries of a democracy compromised with the Brazilian society

Abstract:
The testimonia about Ctesias of Cnidus and his work are here collected and analyzed. The different aspects of his life are examined and the last episode known of it is re-interpreted. We recall the story of the lectures of his work, of its lost and of the modern attempts to reconstitute and understand it. We specify which principles were followed in the composition of the corpus and the edition of the text. We set out and analyze the fragments about Assyria, Persia and India. The history of Assyria includes elements of Assyrian legend and history, but it is full of anachronisms, which is modelled on achaemenid things. It perhaps reflects a Persian vision, but it offers a literary picture, which is in fact Greek and due to Ctesias. The history of Persia gives evidence for the plurality of versions that ran in Persia and Greece according to the ideological needs. Less reliable than Herodotus, it is used for the period after Xerxes. It is fond of relating the court conflicts as well as all what can shock the reader. The picture of India is inspired by things that were seen or accounts that were gathered in Persia. It even includes some traces of Indian legends, but it belongs above all to the mythical vision that the Greeks had of the confines of the world. Ctesias still shows his wish to surprising, but he also reveals a questioning about the limits of humanity. Assyria, Persia and India join together in the image of a fabulous orient, which is distinguished by excess, cruelty and aberration and this image enlightens us above all on the thought of the Greeks themselves

Abstract:
Eudoxus of Cnidus, a Greek scholar from the 4th century BCE, was active in a wide range of fields including philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, geography, medicine, legislation and astrology. This doctoral thesis consists of an edition, translation and commentary of the fragments and testimonia concerning Eudoxus. It brings together some 800 passages from ancient and Byzantine texts dealing with Eudoxus. In particular, it includes unpublished texts and new conjectures. The edition is comes with the first modern-language translation of all ancient fragments ant testimonia concerning Eudoxus. The commentary provided in the footnotes sheds light on problems of interpretation and endeavours to determine the value of the various sources for reconstructing Eudoxus' work. The introduction preceding the edition, translation and commentary contains a synthetic account of Eudoxus' intellectual activity which reconstitutes its depth and consistency in all of the fields in which it took place, and puts it back in its historical and cultural context

The work presents the theory of the integration process in the view of the Hungarian B?la Balassa economist and other authors, commenting on the steps and the reduction of barriers as the integration progresses. It also brings a brief history of the creation of the European Union, described with relevant information to the empirical study. The data from the Penn World Table 8.0 are used for the analysis of the technical change in countries that joined the European Union until 1995, in the period 1950-2011, adopting the Foley and Michl (1999) representation system, which uses the growth-distribution schedule. It also analyzes the results of the variables: growth rate of capital stock, real average wage and gross profit rate. The study finds a Marx-biased technical change in the member states, common in capitalist economies. Moreover, the results of the evolution of labor productivity and capital intensity show an approximation process in relation to the United States in the period 1970-2011, observing the effects of economic integration. The results of the difference between the growth rates of the capital stock of the EU-15 and the US economy show a downward trend in the same period in almost all regions.

Abstract:
It is now widely recognized that the long-wavelength second-order nonlinear optical properties of organic molecules which absorb in the visible or near-UV, may be reasonably well interpreted by semiempirical quantum chemical calculations. Methods such as PPP (taking into account only π electrons), CNDO or INDO (including also σ valence electrons), are generally used in conjunction with the sum-over-states expressions to obtain the tensor elements of β(ω1 + ω2; −ω1, −ω2). Such calculations may predict correct orders of magnitude, show the relative influence of donor and acceptor substituents, and enable one to identify the dominant contributions to particular tensor elements. Although these methods have a common-structure, namely a SCF part followed by some configuration interaction (CI), they also present severe limitations. They are based on a number of particular approximations, and certain intermediate quantities are calibrated on empirical data, which makes in general the results parameter-dependent1-4). This raises the question on how the situation may be improved. With the advent of large-scale vectorized computers, the possibilities of obtaining better molecular wave-functions also by ab initio methods seem promising. How will this affect the computation of nonlinear optical susceptibilities?

Abstract:
The article is a study based on MathE (Improve Math Skills in Higher Education) project, funded by the European Commission under the Erasmus+ Programme, KA2 - Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education. The project, coordinated by Pixel (Italy) in cooperation with the project applicant and scientific coordinator, Instituto Polit?cnico de Bragan?a (Portugal), is being implemented within a partnership made up of technical universities and educational centres from Ireland, Lithuania, Portugal and Romania. The project starts from students' low skills in mathematics. It aims to enhance the quality of teaching Mathematics through digital technologies and to improve teachers' pedagogies and assessment methods with a view to overcoming students' gaps in Mathematics. To this end, the partnership has suggested effective solutions so that teachers can prepare students for a world where mathematics finds application in diverse fields. The project helps mathematics teachers to identify their students' gaps and provides them with the necessary resources and innovative assessment methods to meet their students' needs. The paper presents the project's main objectives, activities and outputs. It gives insights into the project's main digital outputs: the self-need assessment and the final assessment. The former toolkit allows students to carry out a self-evaluation of their knowledge on selected mathematics topics while the latter allows teachers to elaborate final assessments for their students on the topics they would like to evaluate. Students can apply when a final assessment is available and also use materials from the collection of video lessons on Math topics in order to improve their knowledge.
