Abstract:
‘One last word’ offers by way of conclusion, a reflection on the challenges that copyright law will continue to face in regulating older forms together with newer forms of works and methods of dissemination, and by inviting the reader to consider other areas of law (cloud computing, privacy law, state surveillance, taxation) where the analytical framework presented in the book may find application.

Abstract:
The fact that a number of aspects of maritime blockade law are not settled in customary law infers that any state that engages in blockade operations risks the possibility that its actions will be found to have been unlawful. Because the consequences of a blockade can be so deleterious to vulnerable civilian populations, it is necessary that a legal framework for maritime blockade be established. At the core of any such framework must be the requirement to address humanitarian issues and concerns. Without such initiatives, the law of blockade will remain mired in the early twentieth century, and states engaging in this method of warfare will do so under a cloud of legal ambiguity.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the construction of models of the universe, which is ambiguous in Newtonian theory. It presents some results recovered within the framework of general relativity, which in addition makes it possible to lay the foundation of the theory of the formation of large-scale structures in the universe such as galaxies and galactic clusters. The chapter first constructs models of an expanding sphere. If galaxies are treated as the particles of a uniform cloud which is spherically symmetric about the origin of an inertial frame, then these models describe a universe which expands and eventually collapses on itself. The chapter then turns to the pitfalls of the infinite Newtonian universe, the ‘Friedmann’ equation, the evolution of perturbations, and Olbers’s paradox.

Ahmed, Omar. Studying Indian Cinema. Liverpool University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781906733681.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book traces the historical evolution of Indian cinema through a number of key decades. The book is made up of 14 chapters with each chapter focusing on one key film, the chosen films are analysed in their wider social, political and historical context whilst a concerted engagement with various ideological strands that underpin each film is also evident. In addition to exploring the films in their wider contexts, the book analyses selected sequences through the conceptual framework common to both film and media studies. This includes a consideration of narrative, genre, representation, audience and mise en scène. The case studies run chronologically from Awaara (The Vagabond, 1951) to The Elements Trilogy: Water (2005) and include films by such key figures as Satyajit Ray (The Lonely Wife), Ritwick Ghatak (Cloud Capped Star), Yash Chopra (The Wall) and Mira Nair (Salaam Bombay!).

Full text
Abstract:
Governance, as distinct from management, is a crucial but neglected issue in the context of public health informatics. Governance has two overlapping but distinct domains—health sector and IT governance. Governance is a cross-cutting issue affecting all domains discussed in the book, including the use of information, integration, cloud and big data-related issues, institutional design, and the management of complexity. A key governance challenge is the design, development, and use of standards and data policies, given the political nature of technical choices in these areas. Standards, focusing only on the technical aspects implemented in a top-down manner while ignoring the institutional and work practice-related issues, are more likely to fail than those emerging through use, bottom-up, and which add value to work processes. Governance becomes a key issue, as this function is responsible for making strategic choices and putting in place an implementation framework to make them work.

Svantesson, Dan Jerker B. Solving the Internet Jurisdiction Puzzle. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198795674.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Internet jurisdiction has emerged as one of the greatest and most urgent challenges online, severely affecting areas as diverse as e-commerce, data privacy, law enforcement, content take-downs, cloud computing, e-health, Cyber security, intellectual property, freedom of speech, and Cyberwar. In this innovative book, Professor Svantesson presents a vision for a new approach to Internet jurisdiction––for both private international law and public international law––based on sixteen years of research dedicated specifically to the topic. The book demonstrates that our current paradigm remains attached to a territorial thinking that is out of sync with our modern world, especially, but not only, online. Having made the claim that our adherence to the territoriality principle is based more on habit than on any clear and universally accepted legal principles, Professor Svantesson advances a new jurisprudential framework for how we approach jurisdiction. He also proposes several other reform initiatives such as the concept of ‘investigative jurisdiction’ and an approach to geo-blocking, aimed at equipping us to solve the Internet jurisdiction puzzle. In addition, the book provides a history of Internet jurisdiction, and challenges our traditional categorisation of different types of jurisdiction. It places Internet jurisdiction in a broader context and outlines methods for how properly to understand and work with rules of Internet jurisdiction. While Solving the Internet Puzzle paints a clear picture of the concerns involved and the problems that needs to be overcome, this book is distinctly aimed at finding practical solutions anchored in a solid theoretical framework.
