Abstract:
We are witnessing exponential growth in the number of powerful, multiply-connected, energy-rich stationary and mobile nodes, which will make available a massive pool of computing and communication resources. We claim that cloud computing can provide resilient on-demand computing, and more effective and efficient utilization of potentially infinite array of resources. Current cloud computing systems are primarily built using stationary resources. Recently, principles of cloud computing have been extended to the mobile computing domain aiming to form local clouds using mobile devices sharing their computing resources to run cloud-based services. However, current cloud computing systems by and large fail to provide true on-demand computing due to their lack of the following capabilities: 1) providing resilience and autonomous adaptation to the real-time variation of the underlying dynamic and scattered resources as they join or leave the formed cloud; 2) decoupling cloud management from resource management, and hiding the heterogeneous resource capabilities of participant nodes; and 3) ensuring reputable resource providers and preserving the privacy and security constraints of these providers while allowing multiple users to share their resources. Consequently, systems and consumers are hindered from effectively and efficiently utilizing the virtually infinite pool of computing resources. We propose a platform for mobile cloud computing that integrates: 1) a dynamic real-time resource scheduling, tracking, and forecasting mechanism; 2) an autonomous resource management system; and 3) a cloud management capability for cloud services that hides the heterogeneity, dynamicity, and geographical diversity concerns from the cloud operation. We hypothesize that this would enable 'Collaborative Computing Cloud (C3)' for on-demand computing, which is a dynamically formed cloud of stationary and/or mobile resources to provide ubiquitous computing on-demand. The C3 would support a new resource-infinite computing paradigm to expand problem solving beyond the confines of walled-in resources and services by utilizing the massive pool of computing resources, in both stationary and mobile nodes. In this dissertation, we present a C3 management platform, named PlanetCloud, for enabling both a new resource-infinite computing paradigm using cloud computing over stationary and mobile nodes, and a true ubiquitous on-demand cloud computing. This has the potential to liberate cloud users from being concerned about resource constraints and provides access to cloud anytime and anywhere. PlanetCloud synergistically manages 1) resources to include resource harvesting, forecasting and selection, and 2) cloud services concerned with resilient cloud services to include resource provider collaboration, application execution isolation from resource layer concerns, seamless load migration, fault-tolerance, the task deployment, migration, revocation, etc. Specifically, our main contributions in the context of PlanetCloud are as follows. 1. PlanetCloud Resource Management • Global Resource Positioning System (GRPS): Global mobile and stationary resource discovery and monitoring. A novel distributed spatiotemporal resource calendaring mechanism with real-time synchronization is proposed to mitigate the effect of failures occurring due to unstable connectivity and availability in the dynamic mobile environment, as well as the poor utilization of resources. This mechanism provides a dynamic real-time scheduling and tracking of idle mobile and stationary resources. This would enhance resource discovery and status tracking to provide access to the right-sized cloud resources anytime and anywhere. • Collaborative Autonomic Resource Management System (CARMS): Efficient use of idle mobile resources. Our platform allows sharing of resources, among stationary and mobile devices, which enables cloud computing systems to offer much higher utilization, resulting in higher efficiency. CARMS provides system-managed cloud services such as configuration, adaptation and resilience through collaborative autonomic management of dynamic cloud resources and membership. This helps in eliminating the limited self and situation awareness and collaboration of the idle mobile resources. 2. PlanetCloud Cloud Management Architecture for resilient cloud operation on dynamic mobile resources to provide stable cloud in a continuously changing operational environment. This is achieved by using trustworthy fine-grained virtualization and task management layer, which isolates the running application from the underlying physical resource enabling seamless execution over heterogeneous stationary and mobile resources. This prevents the service disruption due to variable resource availability. The virtualization and task management layer comprises a set of distributed powerful nodes that collaborate autonomously with resource providers to manage the virtualized application partitions.

A slew of articles have been written about the fact that computing will eventually go in the direction of electricity. Just as most software users these days also own the hardware that runs the software, electricity users in the days of yore used to generate their own power. However, over time with standardization in voltage and frequency of generated power and better distribution mechanisms the generation of electricity was consolidated amongst fewer utility providers. The same is being forecast for computing infrastructure. Its is being touted that more and more users will rent computing infrastructure from a utility or "cloud" provider instead of maintaining their own hardware. This phenomenon or technology is being referred to Cloud Computing or Utility Computing. Cloud computing has been in existence in some form or the other since the beginning of computing. However, the advent of vastly improved software, hardware and communication technologies has given special meaning to the term cloud computing and opened up a world of possibilities. It is possible today to start an ecommerce or related company without investing in datacenters. This has turned out to be very beneficial to startups and smaller companies that want to test the efficacy of their idea before making any investment in expensive hardware. Corporations like Amazon, SalesForce.com, Google, IBM, Sun Microsystems, and many more are offering or planning to offer these infrastructure services in one form or another.
(cont.) An ecosystem has already been created and going by the investment and enthusiasm in this space the ecosystem is bound to grow. This thesis tries to define and explain the fundamentals of cloud computing. It looks at the technical aspects of this industry and the kind of applications where cloud can be used. It also looks at the economic value created by the platform, the network externalities, its effect on traditional software companies and their reaction to this technology. The thesis also tries to apply the principle of multi-homing, coring and tipping to the cloud-computing platform and explain the results. The hurdles for both users and providers of this service are also examined in this thesis.

Abstract:
Cloud computing has been given a great deal of attention during recent years. Almost all the technology market leaders and leading hosting service providers (like IBM, Microsoft and Verizon) have entered into the Cloud market as Cloud Providers. Cloud computing promises to provide highly available, secure, low cost, agile and highly scalable solution to the consumers. Scania is a global company and one of the world’s leading heavy vehicle manufacturers with 35,000+ employees. All the large organizations such as Scania, aim to constantly update themselves with the latest technology in order to meet their business requirements but, these organizations must always be convinced that there is a strong reason(s) to implement new technology. This research provides the method and criteria in relation to initiating Cloud computing. A number of Scania’s specific business requirements that it is possible to map to the Cloud are addressed in this thesis. The methodology of research is split in two parts. Firstly, the identification of business cases at Scania and their requirements with the Cloud and Secondly, the evaluation and comparison of the functionalities and capabilities of different vendors. The accumulated data is then compared and suitable vendors, according to those business requirements are suggested. This thesis also shares the experience of moving on premise applications to the Cloud. These are Scania specific applications which are currently being hosted in-house. The research also addresses the possibilities of portability between the Cloud providers. Although there is no standardization in relation to Cloud computing, some initiatives such as OpenStack are available and its current position and some application and data migration tools are also discussed. The thesis concludes with a general discussion, recommendations in relation to adapting Cloud computing and selecting the Cloud provider. This recommendation applies to every organization including Scania.

Abstract:
The Idea of moving the functions of centralized cloud computing to the edge devices of the network, brought several advantages such as low latency, higher spectral efficiency, supporting machine to machine communication. The idea of decoupling network function from infrastructure well applied for this revolution. Therefor, the concept of software defined network (SDN) and network function virtualization considered as emerging solutions for the future network. With applying NFV in the edge devices, computing services and also using network functions would be possible through using virtual machines provided by NFV. In the first chapter, there are introductions of cloud, Edge cloud computing and SDN/NFV due to the importance of these topics. Containerization of application is an another proposed concept as lightweight virtualization solution which besides NFV can be proper solution for delivering, implementing and running application in the edge network and using advantages. In fact, developer encapsulate applications inside of the containers and containerization will allows to delivery applications across different environments. In second chapter, centralized cloud and Edge Cloud had been explained and it had been moved to introducing kubernetes as Edge cloud orchestrator in third chapter. In this project, Kubernetes has been used as an open source platform for multi access edge computing which works as container cluster orchestrator. Forth chapter has been dedicated to Implementation and Evaluation of the work. Main targets of this real implementation will be extending platform of container cluster from single platform architecture to multi-platform architecture made by different physical infrastructure of AMD64 on Intel and ARM on Raspberry pi using docker containers. The second target of implementation is checking the feasibility of autoscalling number of pods based on CPU utilization of pods, across nodes with heterogeneous platform inside the same cluster.

Abstract:
Cloud computing is emerging as a promising platform for compute and data intensive scientific applications. Thanks to the on-demand elastic provisioning capabilities, cloud computing has instigated curiosity among researchers from a wide range of disciplines. However, even though many vendors have rolled out their commercial cloud infrastructures, the service offerings are usually only best-effort based without any performance guarantees. Utilization of these resources will be questionable if it can not meet the performance expectations of deployed applications. Additionally, the lack of the familiar development tools hamper the productivity of eScience developers to write robust scientific high performance computing (HPC) applications. There are no standard frameworks that are currently supported by any large set of vendors offering cloud computing services. Consequently, the application portability among different cloud platforms for scientific applications is hard. Among all clouds, the emerging Azure cloud from Microsoft in particular remains a challenge for HPC program development both due to lack of its support for traditional parallel programming support such as Message Passing Interface (MPI) and map-reduce and due to its evolving application programming interfaces (APIs). We have designed newer frameworks and runtime environments to help HPC application developers by providing them with easy to use tools similar to those known from traditional parallel and distributed computing environment set- ting, such as MPI, for scientific application development on the Azure cloud platform. It is challenging to create an efficient framework for any cloud platform, including the Windows Azure platform, as they are mostly offered to users as a black-box with a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) to access various service components. The primary contributions of this Ph.D. thesis are (i) creating a generic framework for bag-of-tasks HPC applications to serve as the basic building block for application development on the Azure cloud platform, (ii) creating a set of APIs for HPC application development over the Azure cloud platform, which is similar to message passing interface (MPI) from traditional parallel and distributed setting, and (iii) implementing Crayons using the proposed APIs as the first end-to-end parallel scientific application to parallelize the fundamental GIS operations.

The quality of life in urban centers has been a concern for governments, business and the resident population in general. Public transportation services perform a central role in this discussion, since they determine, especially for that layer of lower-income society, the time wasted daily in their movements. In Brazilian cities, city buses are predominant in public transportion. Users of this service - passengers - do not have updated information of buses and lines. Offer this kind of information contributes to a better everyday experience of this modal and therefore provides greater quality of life for its users. In a broader view, the bus can be considered sensors that enable the understanding of the patterns and identify anomalies in vehicle traffic in urban areas, allowing benefits for the whole population. This work presents a platform in the cloud computing environment that captures, enriches, stores and makes available the data from GPS devices installed on buses, allowing the extraction of knowledge from this valuable and voluminous set of information. Experiments are performed with the buses of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, with applications focused on passenger and society. The methodologies, discussions and techniques used throughout the work can be reused for different cities, modal and perspectives.

Abstract:
The advancements in virtualization technologies have provided a large spectrum of computational approaches. Dedicated computations can be run on private environments (virtual machines), created within the same computer. Through capable APIs, this functionality is leveraged for the service we wish to implement; a computer power service (CPS). We target peer-to-peer systems for this service, to exploit the potential of aggregating computing resources. The concept of a P2P network is mostly known for its expanded usage in distributed networks for sharing resources like content files or real-time data. This study adds computing power to the list of shared resources by describing a suitable service composition. Taking into account the dynamic nature of the platform, this CPS provision is achieved using a self stabilizing clustering algorithm. So, the resulting system of our research is based around a hierarchical P2P architecture and offers end-to-end consideration of resource provisioning and reliability. We named this system μCloud and characterizes it as a self-provisioning cloud service platform. It is designed, implemented and presented in this dissertation. Eventually, we assessed our work by showing that μCloud succeeds in providing user-centric services using a P2P computing unit. With this, we conclude that our system would be highly beneficial in both small and massively deployed environments.

Abstract:
Elasticity is considered as an important solution to handle the performance issues in scalable distributed system. However, most of the researches of elasticity only concern the provisioning and de-provisioning resources in automatic ways, but always ignore the resource utilization of provisioned resources. This might lead to resource leaks while provisioning redundant resources, thereby causing unnecessary expenditure. To avoid the resource leaks and redundant resources, my research therefore focus on how to maximize resource utilization by self resource management. In this thesis, relevant to diverse problems of resource usage and allocation in different layers, I propose two resource management approaches corresponding to infrastructure and platform, respectively. To overcome infrastructure limitation, I propose CloudGC as middleware service which aims to free occupied resources by recycling idle VMs. In platform-layer, a self-balancing approach is introduced to adjust Hadoop configuration at runtime, thereby avoiding memory loss and dynamically optimizing Hadoop performance. Finally, this thesis concerns rapid deployment of service which is also an issue of elasticity. A new tool, named "hadoop-benchmark", applies docker to accelerate the installation of Hadoop cluster and to provide a set of docker images which contain several well-known Hadoop benchmarks. The assessments show that these approaches and tool can well achieve resource management and self-optimization in various layers, and then facilitate the elasticity of infrastructure and platform in scalable platform, such as Cloud computing

Abstract:
The thesis introduces a study about the vulnerabilities that a company as Scania IT faces towards vendor lock-in in the transition to a cloud computing platform. Cloud computing is a term that refers to anetwork of remote servers hosted on the internet to store, manage and process data, rather than on a local server or a personal computer. Vendor lock-in is an outcome that causes companies to pay a significant cost to move between cloud providers. The effects that cause vendor lock-in that will be described are portability, interoperability and federation are called the lock-in effects. The goal of the research is to help Scania IT understand the vendor lock-in and the vulnerabilities they can face in the transition to the cloud as well as to clarify the concern that they may have against falling in vendor lock-in. The main purpose of the research is to present the various lock-in effects that are related to the transition from one cloud provider to another and the vulnerabilities that cause companies to fall in vendor lock-in. The thesis presents the reasons that motivates why Scania IT would consider using the cloud and the concerns that they may have against usage of a cloud computing platform. The results will be based on a case study of a similar company that has moved to a cloud provider and specifically Microsoft Azure and an interview of Microsoft Azure point of view with the risk of vendor lock-in. Finally, a process of interviews with different people from Scania IT to extract the current bottleneck in the development process that caused the company to think of a cloud computing platform. The results show that companies should consider many risks and factors while moving to the cloud, as vendor lock-in, cloud maturity index and their IT strategies. As a result, the thesis gives recommendations of the steps needed to minimize the risks of the cloud while maintaining the positivity of the cloud.

Abstract:
As virtualization platforms or cloud computing have become more of a commodity, many more organizations have been utilizing them. Many organizations and technologies have emerged to fulfill those cloud needs. Cloud vendors provide similar services, but the differences can have significant impact on specific applications. Selecting the right provider is difficult and confusing because of the number of options. It can be difficult to determine which application characteristics will impact the choice of implementation. There has not been a concise process to select which cloud vendor and characteristics are best suited for the application requirements and organization requirements. This thesis provides a model that identifies crucial application characteristics, organization requirements and also characteristics of a cloud. The model is used to analyze the interaction of the application with multiple cloud platforms and select the best option based on a suitability score. Case studies utilize this model to test three applications against three cloud implementations to identify the best fit cloud implementation. The model is further validated by a small group of peers through a survey. The studies show that the model is useful in identifying and comparing cloud implementations with regard to application requirements.

Abstract:

With Cloud Computing becoming a popular term on the Information Technology (IT) market, security and accountability has become important issues to highlight. In our research we review these concepts by focusing on security risks with Cloud Computing and the associated services; Software, Platform and Infrastructure (SPI) and connecting them with a social study of trust.

The method that was conducted during our research was reviewing secondary literature, interviewing different experts regarding Cloud Computing and relating standards already established by ENISA, NIST, and CSA to the interviews.

The result of this study shows connections between the specific SPIs, both how they compare, but also how they differ. In the end we were also able to rank the top security risks from interviews with experts and see which SPI could be the most insecure one and  what countermeasures could be applied.

This was further related to trust and Service Level Agreement (SLA) in Cloud Computing to show how the security risks we discuss are related to these two specific areas. By highlighting this we wanted to present useable information for both clients and providers in how to create a better Cloud Computing environment.

Abstract:
We present an architecture for a fully decentralized peer-to-peer collaborative computing platform, offering services similar to Cloud Service Provider’s Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) model, using volunteered resources rather than dedicated resources. This thesis is motivated by three research questions: (1) Is it possible to build a peer-to-peer col- laborative system using a fully decentralized infrastructure relying only on volunteered resources?, (2) How can light virtualization be used to mitigate the complexity inherent to the volunteered resources?, and (3) What are the minimal requirements for a computing platform similar to the PaaS cloud computing platform? We propose an architecture composed of three layers: the Network layer, the Virtual layer, and the Application layer. We also propose to use light virtualization technologies, or containers, to provide a uniform abstraction of the contributing resources and to isolate the host environment from the contributed environment. Then, we propose a minimal API specification for this computing platform, which is also applicable to PaaS computing platforms. The findings of this thesis corroborate the hypothesis that peer-to-peer collaborative systems can be used as a basis for developing volunteer cloud computing infrastructures. We outline the implications of using light virtualization as an integral virtualization primitive in public distributed computing platform. Finally, this thesis lays out a starting point for most volunteer cloud computing infrastructure development effort, because it circumscribes the essential requirements and presents solutions to mitigate the complexities inherent to this paradigm.

Developing High Performance Computing applications (HPC), which optimally access the available computing resources in a higher level of abstraction, is a challenge for many scientists. To address this problem, we present a proposal of a component computing cloud called HPC Shelf, where HPC applications perform and SAFe framework, a front-end aimed to create applications in HPC Shelf and the author's main contribution. SAFe is based on Scientific Workflows Management Systems (SWMS) projects and it allows the specification of computational solutions formed by components to solve problems specified by the expert user through a high level interface. For that purpose, it implements SAFeSWL, an architectural and orchestration description language for describing scientific worflows. Compared with other SWMS alternatives, besides rid expert users from concerns about the construction of parallel and efficient computational solutions from the components offered by the cloud, SAFe integrates itself to a system of contextual contracts which is aligned to a system of dynamic discovery (resolution) of components. In addition, SAFeSWL allows explicit control of life cycle stages (resolution, deployment, instantiation and execution) of components through embedded operators, aimed at optimizing the use of cloud resources and minimize the overall execution cost of computational solutions (workflows). Montage and Map/Reduce are the case studies that have been applied for demonstration, evaluation and validation of the particular features of SAFe in building HPC applications aimed to the HPC Shelf platform.

The Indian Information Technology (IT) & Business process outsourcing (BPO) companies are going through an inflection point. They have been growing revenue by over 20% on a yearly basis for the last decade. This revenue growth has been fueled by a proportionate increase in employee headcount. Their ability to maintain the growth rate is in question, partly due to the difficultly in increasing the headcount and partly due to competition from multinational IT Service companies growing their business in India. In order to continue to grow, the Indian IT companies need to change their business model and look for nonlinear revenue growth, which is independent of the resource deployed or effort spent. Cloud computing provides a new strategic option for growth for the Indian IT-BPO companies. This thesis looks into Business Service Platform based on cloud computing and how the IT companies can leverage it to generate nonlinear revenue. It also explores ways to implement the business platform, along with risks and challenges involved. The IT companies would need to change their current sales and marketing process, along with talent recruitment guidelines and training content in order to successfully roll out the platforms, on which its future growth is dependent.

Abstract:
The development of the Next Generation Networks (NGN) such as LTE, WiMax and 5G networks has resulted in the development of more diverse mobile services. Many voice and video services have been developed (e.g. Viber, Skype and WhatsApp). Social networking sites have also been developed (e.g. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter). Users of these services are increasingly expecting and demanding more complex services which have more capabilities that can improve their day to day business. Users want services that are reliable, fast and easy to use. To effectively design and implement services, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) principles are useful and some of the advantages of designing services using SOA principles are: • Improved interoperability; • Cross platform and cross application integration; • Reusability; • Service composition. Service composition has the advantage that customized services with more features can be developed by combining two or more basic services. In this research, SOA principles are used to design a cloud based Mobile Smart Shopping Service Platform. Canal Walk Shopping Mall, which is located in Cape Town, South Africa is used as a case study. Various mobile services are composed in order to solve the problem of getting information about the services provided by the shopping mall and also to show the available parking bays, which has become a major concern due to the rapid growth of the surrounding residential and business areas. Performance measurements for the Smart Shopping service are then conducted to test its power consumption, memory usage, bandwidth usage and application timeline. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations for possible future development are then provided.

Abstract:
The aim of our research paper is to depict and analyze the new trends and changes happening in the Information Technology industry during the recent years, that are most likely to have a long-lasting impact on how the usage of software technology is evolving. The overall trend that we are noticing in this market is about shifting more and more software applications from local computers to online networks generally known as The Cloud (the concept itself is named Cloud Computing). The reason for choosing this topic is that, overall, the Information Technology industry is deeply involved in our everyday lives. Therefore, it is important for us as individuals or businesses to be aware of the new trends happening in this field and learn how we can benefit from them. We will research these trends from the perspective of the providers of Cloud Computing services. We will analyze the challenges of establishing a new market for these services and debate the pros and cons of being the first mover or follower among big and small players. We will also investigate whether there is a dominant design under development. As means for our analysis, we will research the three main technologies used as a mean to implement the new concept of Cloud Computing, which are Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS). One result of our study is that the main players on the Cloud Computing market do not think in terms of national markets or geographical borders about their products. Since they are providing online services, we conclude that it is normal for all the players to see the market as one single entity rather than limiting themselves to geographical areas, which are obviously irrelevant for the Internet market. Another result is that there is confusion among the players when it comes to defining Cloud Computing, Software as a Service and Platform as a Service and the difference between these concepts. We consider as the main reasons for this confusion the fact that the Cloud Computing industry is not yet standardized, and every firm is having its own way of dealing with these new concepts. However, we believe that there is a complex market system under way. All the firms are apparently waiting for a technological standardization or a dominant design, before they will fully adopt and implement this technology. Moreover, most companies we analyzed believe that Cloud Computing will be, one way or another, the future in the Information Technology and Communication industry.

Olurin, Olumuyiwa. "Policy Merger System for P3P in a Cloud Aggregation Platform." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23624.

Full text
Abstract:
The need for aggregating privacy policies is present in a variety of application areas today. In traditional client/server models, websites host services along with their policies in different private domains. However, in a cloud-computing platform where aggregators can merge multiple services, users often face complex decisions in terms of choosing the right services from service providers. In this computing paradigm, the ability to aggregate policies as well as services will be useful and more effective for users that are privacy conscious regarding their sensitive or personal information. This thesis studies the problems associated with the Platform for Privacy Preference (P3P) language, and the present issues with communicating and understanding the P3P language. Furthermore, it discusses some efficient strategies and algorithms for the matching and the merging processes, and then elaborates on some privacy policy conflicts that may occur after merging policies. Lastly, the thesis presents a tool for matching and merging P3P policies. If successful, the merge produces an aggregate policy that is consistent with the policies of all participating service providers.

Azab, Mohamed Mahmoud Mahmoud. "Cooperative Autonomous Resilient Defense Platform for Cyber-Physical Systems." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/19273.

Full text
Abstract:
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) entail the tight integration of and coordination between computational and physical resources. These systems are increasingly becoming vital to modernizing the national critical infrastructure systems ranging from healthcare, to transportation and energy, to homeland security and national defense. Advances in CPS technology are needed to help improve their current capabilities as well as their adaptability, autonomicity, efficiency, reliability, safety and usability.  Due to the proliferation of increasingly sophisticated cyber threats with exponentially destructive effects, CPS defense systems must systematically evolve their detection, understanding, attribution, and mitigation capabilities. Unfortunately most of the current CPS defense systems fall short to adequately provision defense services while maintaining operational continuity and stability of the targeted CPS applications in presence of advanced persistent attacks. Most of these defense systems use un-coordinated combinations of disparate tools to provision defense services for the cyber and physical components. Such isolation and lack of awareness of and cooperation between defense tools may lead to massive resource waste due to unnecessary redundancy, and potential conflicts that can be utilized by a resourceful attacker to penetrate the system.
Recent research argued against the suitability of the current security solutions to CPS environments.  We assert the need for new defense platforms that effectively and efficiently manage dynamic defense missions and toolsets in real-time with the following goals:
1) Achieve asymmetric advantage to CPS defenders, prohibitively increasing the cost for attackers;
2) Ensure resilient operations in presence of persistent and evolving attacks and failures; and
3) Facilitate defense alliances, effectively and efficiently diffusing defense intelligence and operations transcending organizational boundaries.
Our proposed solution comprehensively addresses the aforementioned goals offering an evolutionary CPS defense system. The presented CPS defense platform, termed CyPhyCARD (Cooperative Autonomous Resilient Defenses for Cyber-Physical systems) presents a unified defense platform to monitor, manage, and control the heterogeneous composition of CPS components. CyPhyCARD relies on three interrelated pillars to construct its defense platform. CyPhyCARD comprehensively integrates these pillars, therefore building a large scale, intrinsically resilient, self- and situation- aware, cooperative, and autonomous defense cloud-like platform that provisions adequate, prompt, and pervasive defense services for large-scale, heterogeneously-composed CPS. The CyPhyCARD pillars are:
1) Autonomous management platform (CyberX) for CyPhyCARD\'s foundation. CyberX enables application elasticity and autonomic adaptation to changes by runtime diversity employment, enhances the application resilience against attacks and failures by multimodal recovery mechanism, and enables unified application execution on heterogeneously composed platforms by a smart employment of a fine-grained environment-virtualization technology.
2) Diversity management system (ChameleonSoft) built on CyberX. ChameleonSoft encrypts software execution behavior by smart employment of runtime diversity across multiple dimensions to include time, space, and platform heterogeneity inducing a trace-resistant moving-target defense that works on securing CyPhyCARD platform against software attacks.
3) Evolutionary Sensory system (EvoSense) built on CyberX. EvoSense realizes pervasive, intrinsically-resilient, situation-aware sense and response system to seamlessly effect biological-immune-system like defense. EvoSense acts as a middle layer between the defense service provider(s) and the Target of Defense (ToD) creating a uniform defense interface that hides ToD\'s scale and heterogeneity concerns from defense-provisioning management.
CyPhyCARD is evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively. The efficacy of the presented approach is assessed qualitatively, through a complex synthetic CPS attack scenario. In addition to the presented scenario, we devised multiple prototype packages for the presented pillars to assess their applicability in real execution environment and applications. Further, the efficacy and the efficiency of the presented approach is comprehensively assessed quantitatively by a set of custom-made simulation packages simulating each CyPhyCARD pillar for performance and security evaluation.  The evaluation illustrated the success of CyPhyCARD and its constructing pillars to efficiently and effectively achieve its design objective with reasonable overhead.

Abstract:
Data stored in third party storage systems like the cloud might not be secure since confidentiality and integrity of data are not guaranteed. Though cloud computing provides cost-effective storage services, it is a third party service and so, a client cannot trust the cloud service provider to store its data securely within the cloud. Hence, many organizations and users may not be willing to use the cloud services to store their data in the cloud until certain security guarantees are made. In this thesis, a solution to the problem of securely storing the client’s data by maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of the data within the cloud is developed. Five protocols are developed which ensure that the client’s data is stored only on trusted storage servers, replicated only on trusted storage servers, and guarantee that the data owners and other privileged users of that data access the data securely. The system is based on trusted computing platform technology [11]. It uses a Trusted Platform Module, specified by the Trusted Computing Group [11]. An encrypted file system is used to encrypt the user’s data. The system provides data security against a system administrator in the cloud.

Thesis, University of Bradford, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/18587.

Full text
Abstract:
Virtualisation is one of the underlying technologies that led to the success of cloud computing platforms (CCPs). The technology, along with other features such as multitenancy allows delivering of computing resources in the form of service through efficient sharing of physical resources. As these resources are provided through virtualisation, a robust agreement is outlined for both the quantity and quality-of-service (QoS) in a service level agreement (SLA) documents. QoS is one of the essential components of SLA, where performance is one of its primary aspects. As the technology is progressively maturing and receiving massive acceptance, researchers from industry and academia continue to carry out novel theoretical and practical studies of various essential aspects of CCPs with significant levels of success. This thesis starts with the assessment of the current level of knowledge in the literature of cloud computing in general and CCPs in particular. In this context, a substantive literature review was carried out focusing on performance modelling, testing, analysis and evaluation of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), methodologies. To this end, a systematic mapping study (SMSs) of the literature was conducted. SMS guided the choice and direction of this research. The SMS was followed by the development of a novel open queueing network model (QNM) at equilibrium for the performance modelling and analysis of an OpenStack IaaS CCP. Moreover, it was assumed that an external arrival pattern is Poisson while the queueing stations provided exponentially distributed service times. Based on Jackson’s theorem, the model was exactly decomposed into individual M/M/c (c ≥ 1) stations. Each of these queueing stations was analysed in isolation, and closed-form expressions for key performance metrics, such as mean response time, throughput, server (resource) utilisation as well as bottleneck device were determined. Moreover, the research was extended with a proposed open QNM with a bursty external arrival pattern represented by a Compound Poisson Process (CPP) with geometrically distributed batches, or equivalently, variable Generalised Exponential (GE) interarrival and service times. Each queueing station had c (c ≥ 1) GE-type servers. Based on a generic maximum entropy (ME) product form approximation, the proposed open GE-type QNM was decomposed into individual GE/GE/c queueing stations with GE-type interarrival and service times. The evaluation of the performance metrics and bottleneck analysis of the QNM were determined, which provided vital insights for the capacity planning of existing CCP architectures as well as the design and development of new ones. The results also revealed, due to a significant impact on the burstiness of interarrival and service time processes, resulted in worst-case performance bounds scenarios, as appropriate. Finally, an investigation was carried out into modelling and analysis of performance and security trade-offs for a CCP architecture, based on a proposed generalised stochastic Petri net (GSPN) model with security-detection control model (SDCM). In this context, ‘optimal’ combined performance and security metrics were defined with both M-type or GE-type arrival and service times and the impact of security incidents on performance was assessed. Typical numerical experiments on the GSPN model were conducted and implemented using the Möbius package, and an ‘optimal’ trade-offs were determined between performance and security, which are crucial in the SLA of the cloud computing services.

Abstract:
Il termine Internet of Things viene spesso utilizzato per definire oggetti intelligenti, servizi, and applicazioni connessi attraverso Internet.

Abstract:

Cloud computing is a new buzzword within the IT-industry, and introduces a whole new way of working with IT. The technique delivers web based services, which results in that the user no longer needs to install an application locally on a computer. Since the application no longer needs to run on a local entity, but in a datacenter located on a service provider, the users no longer need any specific hardware more than a computer with an internet connection. Cloud computing also offers IT-infrastructure and development environments as services, these three service types is better known as cloud services. Through the usage of different types of cloud services, the need for maintenance and hardware is significantly reduced. Therefore, the need for IT-competence in a company is reduced, which offers the company to focus on their core business strategy. A problem with cloud computing is that because it is such a new phenomenon, there is no established definition. This makes the subject hard to understand and easily misunderstood.

Cloud computing surely seems to solve many of the problems with reliability of systems and hardware that companies struggle with on a daily basis, but is it really that simple? The purpose of this thesis is to understand which types of company preconditions that affect the integration of cloud services in a company. We will also clarify the concept of Cloud computing by divide and describe its different components.

To investigate the different types of company preconditions and there approach to cloud services we have performed interviews at different companies in associations with our case study.

The result shows that a cloud service only can be integrated to an organization as long as the organization possesses the right preconditions. We think that cloud services can bring great advantages to organizations that meet these preconditions and that cloud services has the potential to ease the way of work for organizations in the future.

The goal of this project is to create a dialogue between observers of the event in the hopes of creating new social connections where there were none before. This goal is achieved by allowing observers to view the event from anywhere around the world on a computer via the internet and participate in a dialogue with other users on the website. The other objective of this project is to create a multimedia internet platform for other art projects to use. Other artists that are interested in hosting their own live synchronous event will be able to use the platform we have created and customize it to the specific needs of their project.

Abstract:
Advances in water resources modeling are improving the information that can be supplied to support decisions that affect the safety and sustainability of society, but these advances result in models being more computationally demanding. To facilitate the use of cost- effective computing resources to meet the increased demand through high-throughput computing (HTC) and cloud computing in modeling workflows and web applications, I developed a comprehensive Python toolkit that provides the following features: (1) programmatic access to diverse, dynamically scalable computing resources; (2) a batch scheduling system to queue and dispatch the jobs to the computing resources; (3) data management for job inputs and outputs; and (4) the ability for jobs to be dynamically created, submitted, and monitored from the scripting environment. To compose this comprehensive computing toolkit, I created two Python libraries (TethysCluster and CondorPy) that leverage two existing software tools (StarCluster and HTCondor). I further facilitated access to HTC in web applications by using these libraries to create powerful and flexible computing tools for Tethys Platform, a development and hosting platform for web-based water resources applications. I tested this toolkit while collaborating with other researchers to perform several modeling applications that required scalable computing. These applications included a parameter sweep with 57,600 realizations of a distributed, hydrologic model; a set of web applications for retrieving and formatting data; a web application for evaluating the hydrologic impact of land-use change; and an operational, national-scale, high- resolution, ensemble streamflow forecasting tool. In each of these applications the toolkit was successful in automating the process of running the large-scale modeling computations in an HTC environment.

That is, cloud computing can provide powerful computing and large storage space for users to get better performance. On the other hand, most of people have owned mobile devices (e.g., smart phones and ipads) can help people to do a lot of things such as listening music, watching TV or video, and surfing Internet. In the paper, we will propose a multimedia platform to play multimedia (e.g., video or audio files) by mobile devices, and at the same time, cloud computing can help the multimedia platform more efficient and convenient for users to control and switch the multimedia playing among different equipment (e.g., display devices or speakers).

As the rapid popularization of smart phone in recent years, the users request from mobility device not only for accessing the internet, but also for high computing capability and the sustainability of battery. Under the tendency of dramatic improvement of computing speed and the development of multi-core structure, ARM (Advanced RISC Machine) processors, which carry advantages of low-power consumption and high battery endurance, are applied extensively to various mobility devices such as smart phone, table PC, set-up box, in-car devices and a node of the sensor network. With the rise of the cloud computing, the service providers establish large Internet Data Center is essential. These Internet Data Centers not only consume great energy for operation and also need to cool down a large number of processors by fan or air conditioner; the quantity of such additional energy required by the cooling system should be put into consideration when designing the IDC. Thus, the power consuming of IDC has become the main issue in coming future. This study is to provide a solution of decreasing the power consuming by establishing Ubuntu embedded operating system, installing Java Runtime Environment, and transplant Hadoop on the hardware platform of DevKit8000 in order to create a low-power consuming testing environment. Context-Aware is one of the main focuses in the research field of modern computer science. While embedded computing technology had improved, micro-sensor devices have gradually gained their presence in our lives. However, the commonly seen RDBMS (Relational Database Management System) nowadays cannot handle the large quantities of continuously generated sensor data. The extendibility of databases on Cloud Computing platform Hadoop can solve this problem, but the feature of Cloud Computing, DFS (Distributed File System), requires the users to learn new ways of managing databases. This thesis not only presents a RDBMS on Cloud Computing platform which shows the user how to manage the database with JDBC driver and SQL (Structured Query Language), but also explains how to use the advantages of Cloud Computing platform to improve the elasticity and reliability of database.

With the rapid development of cloud computing and the emerging big data environments, large amounts of data are manipulated in cloud services. The Hadoop cloud computing platform has been used widely for its capability of storing, processing, analysis, and management of large-scale data. The most important task of Hadoop monitoring is resource consumption and availability of HDFS and MapReduce. This requires the installation of multiple monitoring systems in each component of the Hadoop cluster. In this paper, the research will propose the use of SNMP in Hadoop monitoring. The proposed monitoring scheme makes use of four standard and enterprise MIBs, including MIB-II, HOST-RESOURCES-MIB, UCD-SNMP-MIB and LM-SENSORS-MIB, to provide essential information for monitoring cluster components. In addition, the research will develop a log analysis system to parse log files of Hadoop, together with the use of Hadoop API, for retrieving valuable data for effective monitoring. An enterprise MIB will be defined to make the above monitoring information available in a standard way and implemented on an extensible agent (AgentX). Finally, a web-based management system will be presented to demonstrate the superiority of SNMP in monitoring the Hadoop system.

Deep learning has become a powerful technology in image recognition, gaming, information retrieval, and many other areas that need intelligent data processing. However, huge amount of data and complex computations prevent deep learning from being practical in mobile applications. In this thesis, we proposed a mobile cloud computing system for deep learning. The architecture puts the training process and model repository in cloud platforms, and the recognition process and data gathering in mobile devices. The communication is carried out via Git protocol to ensure the success of data transmission in unstable network environments. We used car camera object detection as an example application, and implemented the system on NVIDIA Jetson TK1. Experiment results show that detection rate can achieve 1 to 4 FPS with Faster R-CNN and ZF model, and the system can work well even when the network connection is unstable.

Counterfeit medicines cause serious problems to the public world health widely, and such problems are continuously increasing every year. Counterfeit medicines not only threat the legitimate pharmaceutical market, but also harm the patient’s health and confidence in healthcare services. Anti-counterfeit mechanisms, such as e-pedigree (electronic records of all prior sale, purchase, or trade of a medicine, and all parties related to the medicine), are established in many countries and areas. For example, the California Board of Pharmacy (CBOP) of U.S.A. published its "E-Pedigree Requirements" which are scheduled to go into effect in a phased approach between 2015 and 2017. E-pedigree needs a collaborative mechanism equipped with a general data exchange protocol through the pharmaceutical supply chain. E-pedigree also needs RFID technology which causes the cost for constructing the RFID environment, besides the cost of manufacturing and delivering medicines. For synchronizing medicines data and providing service flexibility, this research adopts the concepts of service-oriented architecture (SOA) and RFID technology to design a cloud computing e-pedigree platform according to the EPC standard. The cloud computing platform is capable to provide medicines verification functions and health management functions to customers (or patients), sales management functions to pharmacies, and inventory management functions to medicine dealers. Our platform contains a data exchange mechanism to synchronize medicine information through the pharmaceutical supply chain, which can benefit customers (or patients), pharmacies and medicine dealers. Our platform is especially useful for pharmacies (where B2C commerce occurs) by providing an on-demand anti-counterfeit operation model so that customers (or patients) can avoid potential hazards caused by counterfeit medicines by verifying the authenticity of medicines when making purchase on line.

With cloud computing technologies continue to progress, the open source cloud computing platforms have been emerged. Therefore, the application of Internet services has expanded operations depth and breadth of its service-level services through the cloud. Due to the characteristics of cloud computing, the existing business model can be changed to cloud environment quickly. The human and resources of small and medium-sized enterprises are limited, hence cannot spend a lot of budget to construct the private cloud of enterprise. With the advancement of cloud computing technology, open source cloud computing platform have emerged. However, OpenStack is one of the popular open source cloud computing platform. To provide more suitable OpenStack environment for business applications, a Service oriented Architecture based OpenStack (SoAOpenStack) is proposed in this study. SoAOpenStack is a three-tiered service model that can be used as an intermediary layer for resource allocation. Firstly, the Service Level Agreement (SLA) is used in SoAOpenStack, in order to differentiate the different levels of service requests. Then, the Priority scheduling algorithm, First Come First Served (FCFS) scheduling algorithm and First Fit resource allocation algorithm are used to configure the appropriate virtual machine. By using the proposed SoAOpenStack, the quality of service for users can be improved, the allocation of service requests and virtual resources can be achieved efficiently, and the waste of physical and virtual resources can be reduced.

In this thesis, the major goal is to establish a general computing platform for medical image analysis. We attempt to apply cloud computing to avoid the complexity of preparing the initial environment of medical image analysis and to facilitate user operations. The platform considers the image analysis as a simple input and output system. The web programming knowledge is not required for the developers. The user interface, file upload and result collection systems as well as email notifications are provided by this platform. In the point of the operator’s view, the medical analysis program can be regarded as “APP” in the smart phone and the platform can be considered as “APP Store”. The platform now provides cloud computations for resting-state fMRI analysis, voxel-based cortical thickness, and classifications of ADHD groups. This platform in potentially practical in improving the workflow of medical image analysis.

The development trend of next-generation Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is already moving away from using a single technology for everything and toward the integration and merging a variety of information technologies. In particular, the comprehensive development of the Internet of Things (IoT), triggered by the technological changes, such as Internet of Everything (IoE) creates a substantial global market, which can be expanded to a variety of applications in daily life and great number of usages. With the spread of the Internet, wireless communications technology and mobile computing technology are also constantly changing, creating a heterogeneous network environment for both users and service providers. IoT application management mechanisms and the development of Cloud Computing, Big Data analytics and Virtualization Technologies have created a lively, flexible network and a large-scale IoT terminal environment. It contains physical network resources and can to be shared by virtualized methods. It is also needed to increase utilization of network bandwidth, flexibility of controls and management capability. This study developed an IoT-Mobile Cloud Computing (IoT-MCC) platform based on virtualization technology through the Multi-Agent Scheme, learning and sharing heterogeneous network conditions to quickly and efficiently adjust network resources to meet the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the network. The proposed Traffic Engineering (TE) mechanism presents a novel cooperative multi-agent system in SDN environment based on a cooperative concept and awareness algorithm for QoS management in heterogeneous network. Groups of Control signaling will dynamically attach request signaling by Agent-Based operations to reduce large scale signaling lead to network congestion risk and to enhance system Service Level Agreement (SLA) and attempts to enhance users’ Quality of Experience (QoE). To offer more readily available and flexible service for IoT applications, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) integrates with Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) technologies toward Fifth Generation of Mobile Networks (5G) is adopted. The architecture is distinctive from traditional cloud-based services which require objects/users to connect to distant servers to store, send or save data. Instead, server centers are expanded to be more accessible to objects and users. The ability to send information for computation can optimize 15% of server resources utilization and help to save a significant amount of resources of IoT gateway to reduce 30% of latency. Therefore, the integration of Cloud Computing, Mobile Networks, IoT and MEC technologies will be needed to provide a more flexible, highly scalable new-generation network foundation and application architecture, and to utilize unique rapidly deployed and innovative network architecture and communication protocols. It is also needed to increase utilization of network bandwidth, flexibility of controls and management capability. In addition the emulation scheme for QoS management and platform performance evaluation, this IoT-MCC platform will prove to be significant progress for ecosystem applications for IoT integrated architectures in 4G or next coming 5G networks.

With the huge amount of information era is coming, and cloud computing is more universal. The advantages of cloud computing include reduced costs, easy maintenance and re-offering the resources, thereby increasing profits. But how to ensure data security, maintain client confidentiality of personal information is an important issue on cloud computing security. On the cloud computing applications, in order to avoid malicious attacks and data theft, homomorphic encryption system provides an excellent solution. The structure of fully homomorphic encryption originated in 2009 as proposed by Gentry, which allows a worker without the secret decryption key to compute any result of the data on one hand and still keep the data privacy on the other hand. This thesis proposes a system that utilizes fully homomorphic computation to process the customer's encrypted data, and get the right result without the need to decrypt the data in the whole process, there is a secure problem when data entrusted to a third party and it is able to resolve. In addition, we built this system on a peer-servicing public cloud computing platform and to avoid system crash caused by single user offline. However, confidentiality, integrity and availability of information security are core criterions, we combine homomorphic scheme with garbled circuits to provide a mechanism of verifiable computation, and we utilize information security mechanisms to prove the secure strength of this system.

A Vehicle Management System Implemented on the Cloud Computing Platform ABSTRACT Recently, the rapid evolution of broadband wireless communications and Internet changes the patterns of daily life and communications between people. Wireless communications integrating with global positioning system (GPS) can accurately calculate user’s positioning information. Subsequently the position information can be tracked and displayed on the Google map in mobile devices, such as smart phone, tablet and laptop. Additionally, people communicate with each other via wireless, Internet or smart phone to obtain the required geo-information services, such as restaurants, aircraft or rail timetable enquiries, tour planning, emergency rescue, traffic accidents and so on. The LBS (Location-based Service) application also provides users not only with value-add services, but also creates the service provider revenue. In this study, we implement a vehicle management system for golf carts operating in the golf course. Using intelligent handheld devices as communication and locating devices, and integrating with the GUI and the Google Map capabilities, golfers can obtain the dynamic status of the course directly from the handheld devices. Golf carts position and relevant status data can be transmitted via the wideband wireless communication network to the cloud platform and displayed on the web page for real-time fleet monitoring and management purpose. Due to the continuous developing in capabilities and applications of smart handheld devices and GAE platform, the results of this study can be easily extended to other vehicle management systems not limited to the golf carts fleet in the golf courses. Nowadays cloud-computing is the hottest topics in the study of Internet. Through internet connection, it provided calculation service and allowed both software/hardware resources sharing and virtualization resource-management. This service has provided brand-new service style and irreplaceable advantages. There are three types of cloud-computing service model: SaaS (Software as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service), IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service). Based on PaaS and researches of traditional virtual machine, the essay mainly discussed about issues of resource deployment and further designed a scheduling system with priority scheduling. Practically, Docker Container and Swarm Cluster Management system are used as the technique basis and implementation of this essay are based on Distributed Docker Management System (DDMS). The aim of the essay is to improve its way for resource deployment: maximum the service numbers and conclude real-time factor in scheduling system. The new design is to authorize enough priority and hardware resources to the urgent request, and also satisfied the need of basic calculation service. In the essay, we used Bin-Packing algorithm to solve resource-deployment problems. We not only discussed about different Bin-Packing algorithm but also provided the refinement method to equip with Bulk Arrivals functionality while at the same time achieving approximate efficiency of Online Bin-Packing and similar result of Offline Bin-Packing. Finally, trying to testify each algorithm’s impact on cloud service system’s performance, we used queuing system to compared four different algorithms’ impact in our model and analyze each reference data and correlations to provide a scheduling system which aligned with the need of Cluster Deployment from developer’s viewpoint.
