Abstract:
To enhance the sustainability of business operations, enterprises have interests in enterprise resource planning (ERP) transitions from an existing on-premise method to a cloud-based system. This study conducts a comprehensive analysis using the technology-organization-environment, diffusion of innovation, and the model of innovation resistance frameworks. The empirical analysis shows that the factors of organizational culture, regulatory environment, relative advantage, trialability, and vendor lock-in all had a significant influence on the intention to adopt cloud-based ERP, while information and communications technology skill, complexity, observability, data security, and customization had no significant influence on the intention to adopt cloud-based ERP. This study’s findings provide meaningful guidance for companies that want to adopt cloud-based ERP, governments that support enterprise digitalization, and vendors who sell cloud-based ERP systems.

Abstract:
Cloud enterprise resource planning (Cloud ERP) is an internet- and cloud computing-based enterprise information system developed on the cloud platform. Cloud ERP has lower costs and shorter development time compared with traditional ERP system, but it remains in a state of information isolated island. To maximize the advantages of cloud computing and make up the deficiency of traditional ERP systems, it is necessary to break down the "wall" between enterprises, making cloud ERP enter a more open and interconnected ecological environment. The model-driven development approach contributes to a better resilient scheduling capability of ERP system, leading to faster development and deployment of it. In this article, the authors propose a “knowledge + data” model-driven open ecological cloud ERP and explain the definition and functions of each model layer. Finally, the effectiveness of model layers is demonstrated in the open ecological cloud ERP reference architecture.

Abstract:
This paper aims to develop a research model to explain managers' intentions to switch toward cloud based ERP (Enterprise Resources Planning). Indeed, as cloud computing is considered as a true revolution in Information Technologies field, ERP market is shaping toward more cloud based solutions. However, since cloud computing is presented as a risky alternative, cloud ERP adoption may faces reticence from managers. On the other hand, thanks to the benefits of such system associated to the known difficulties of On-Premises ERP, some managers would rather be motivated to switch to the cloud solution. Thus, from the proposed research model we attempt to present factors that influence managers' intentions to switch toward cloud ERP. By considering IT switching as a particular form of IT adoption, we based our literature review on Theory of planned behavior (TPB) to identify the determinants of switching. This review also allowed us to integrate the expected switching benefits and risks as antecedents and the personal innovativeness as a moderating factor. To contextualize our research model, we performed semi-structured interviews in four Saudi Small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The use of Nvivo 10 to codify and analyze the interviews content combined to a deep analysis of previous researches helped us to improve the research model by adding two additional factors: “top management support” considered as the main determinant of intentions and “satisfaction with actual system” as an important antecedent linked closely to switching.

Abstract:
Cloud-based ERP solutions offer many benefits to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and help them to integrate their activities, such as improve communications and reduce operational and maintenance costs. Primarily, it was only adopted by large organizations, but now SMEs are also keen on adoption. However, the motivation regarding the adoption of these systems in SMEs is relatively low in developing countries. This fact urges us to investigate the challenges faced by Pakistani SMEs. A qualitative research approach along with unstructured interviews was conducted by means of face to face. Interview methods are used to extract understanding, opinions, and challenges faced by SMEs on their way to adopt the cloud-based ERP system. The data were collected from eight well-reputed organizations, directly involved in the adoption. The study found ten (10) themes that are reluctant to adopt cloud ERP among Pakistani SMEs. The main benefit of these themes is to provide results that can be easily accessible to enterprises who want to adopt a cloud-based ERP. This can also contribute to the lack of the literature of cloud ERP and delivers insight for future study by practitioners and researchers.

Abstract:
In an era of technological growth, cloud computing is one of the hottest topics on the market. This, along with the overall increased use of digital systems, requires solid integration options to be developed. Redpill Linpro recognizes this and has developed a cloud-based Integration Platform as a Service (IPaaS) solution called Connectivity Engine. New techniques like this can however seem very abstract to a customer, something which a demo application could help substantiate. To aid in this issue we have developed a web-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system as well as an Integration Application to connect the ERP system with Salesforce.com in a bidirectional integration. With the use of Connectivity Engine this can be hosted in the cloud and be easily accessible. The project has been a success for Redpill Linpro as well as the authors. A solid way to demonstrate the abilities of Connectivity Engine has been developed along with descriptive documentation for any sales representative assigned to pitch the platform.

Sindane, Themba. "Developing a Framework to Understand the Challenges and Benefits of Cloud-Based ERP Systems in the South African Mining Industry." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/65858.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to develop a framework to understand the challenges and benefits of cloud-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems in the mining industry in South Africa. Large corporates and organisations invest a lot of money and resources in the implementation of ERP systems. Much of this goes towards the high licencing and maintenance costs of these systems. Although the CIOs of many of these companies are reluctant to adopt the latest trends in Information Technology (IT) infrastructure when it comes to ERP implementation, one premise is that ERPs are becoming more complex to manage as there is often a shortage of in-house ERP system skills, which impacts on the maintenance of such systems. This has led many mining companies to turn to ERP service providers for their maintenance needs. This study has four objectives. Firstly, to understand the current state of adoption of cloud-based ERP systems in the mining industry in South Africa; secondly, to define the aspects that influence the move to cloud-based ERP systems in general; thirdly, to understand the type of IT infrastructure and resources needed by South African mining companies to enable them to adopt cloud-based ERP systems; and fourthly, to develop a framework to understand the factors that influence the migration to cloud-based ERP systems in these mining companies. A thorough literature review was done on ERP systems, cloud computing, cloud-based ERP systems and TOE framework, followed by qualitative research done in the form of interviews. Experts in the field of ERP implementation, as well as some of the core service providers of ERP systems in the South African mining industry, were interviewed to tap their knowledge on the use of cloud-based ERP systems. A total of ten semi-structured interviews were conducted, after which the data were transcribed and analysed using Atlasti.7.0. The topics which emerged from this analysis were used in conjunction with the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework of DePietro, Wiarda and Fleischer (1990) to construct a framework of the benefits and challenges that affect the implementation of, or the migration to, cloud-based ERP systems. The framework is aimed at assisting the management of South African mining companies to understand the benefits and challenges of cloud-based ERP systems. It is further intended to be used as a readiness framework to determine an organisation’s readiness to move to a cloud-based ERP system. The results of the study revealed that there was a low level of migration to cloud-based ERP systems in the South African mining industry with some experts projecting that it could take up to 10 years for these companies to adopt the cloud deployment model. These experts, however, propagated the migration to cloud-based ERP systems as they believed it would assist these companies with reducing their ERP operational costs; it would allow for more flexible ERP systems, and it would provide for data storage at a lower cost. Despite these advantages, the hindrances for cloud-based ERP system migration include poor bandwidth offered at a high cost; unfavourable maintenance contracts; concerns around data security, electricity and theft; and issues around the mindsets of management, resulting in insufficient change management and a lack of priority in ERP investment. To overcome some of these hindrances, the experts firstly recommend that mining companies adopt a hybrid strategy when migrating to cloud-based ERP systems. This implies that the production ERP system is hosted on premise while only the non-production ERP system is migrated to a cloud computing environment. A further recommendation to mining companies includes a proposal to increase the investment made towards a cloud computing environment to reap future benefits of cloud-based ERPs. Secondly, service providers are recommended to create value propositions for the migration to a cloud computing environment, which should incorporate an extension of cloud computing skills; to revise unfavourable support contracts which could lead to vendor lock-in; and to work on ensuring uncompromised data security. Finally, policy makers are advised to build in regulations to improve the availability and accessibility of broadband to enable the move to cloud-based ERP systems.

Abstract:
No matter how big a company is or what market segment it serves it still needs administration and supervision. An ERP system is a system that has the sole purpose to help a company with these activities and is often considered the backbone that intertwines the key business-processes in an organization. More specifically an ERP system can help a company to manage everything from product planning, purchasing, and inventory control to interaction with suppliers and customer service. Implementing a competitive ERP system into an organization can however become very capital intense, and small and medium enterprises do not often have the financial strength to handle this investment. An important step in the evolution of ERP is therefore cloud based ERP systems which are considered an enabler for many advantages for small and medium enterprises. The purpose of this master thesis is to establish which factors that affect the decision of small and medium enterprises to move their ERP system to the cloud or to implement a brand new cloud solution. Further, these factors have been evaluated and investigated from a strategic perspective in order to provide managerial recommendations for vendor companies. The main research questions for this master thesis are therefor: • What factors affect the client’s adoption decision of cloud based ERP systems technology? • How can the vendors cope with these factors? In order to collect empirical data, a set of interviews have been conducted with vendors which is targeting the small and medium enterprise segment; and customers to these vendors which have adopted a cloud based ERP system. These companies are the system vendors Implema AB, Alterview, and Unit4Agresso and the adopters Handheld, Naty, Grays American Stores, and Södertörns Högskola. The resulting data from this have been analyzed with the help from a theoretical framework which consists of theories from technological change (Types of technological change); Technological change as a social process (Technology diffusion; Technology adoption); Technology system evolution (Salient and Reverse Salient). The results of the empirical research show that risk, function, cost and flexibility are strong contributing factors for the adoption of cloud based ERP systems.

Abstract:
Because of the technological development, Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are increasingly being delivered as a cloud service. This means that IT consultants' value creation may change when implementing cloud-based ERP-systems. If the IT consultants do not possess right expertise, it can lead to erroneous decisions and ineffective solutions. Thus, it is of the utmost importance to investigate how IT consultants' value creation has changed because of the implementation and use of cloud-based ERP-systems. The purpose of the study is to contribute new knowledge about how IT consultants' value-creating skills and activities changes because of the implementation and use of cloud-based ERP-systems. By using a data-driven thematic analysis the study examined how IT consultants' value creation changed because of cloud-based ERP-systems. The study's conclusion presents six changes in how IT consultants' value-creating skills and activities change because of the implementation and use of cloud-based ERP-systems. An example is that IT consultants' value-creation will be to adapt customer organizations' business processes rather than the system's processes.

Abstract:
The introduction of new technology in organizations is an ever-present area of research within ERP systems research. In recent years, the phenomenon of "Cloud Services", or Software as a Service (SaaS), is growing in popularity. Today, many ERP system suppliers offer their customers ERP systems as a cloud service. SaaS-based ERP systems give organizations advantages over traditional ERP systems that are installed locally in the organization, such as increased scalability, better accessibility, and lower implementation costs - which makes them particularly interesting for small and medium-sized organizations. However, SaaS-based ERP systems also involve risks that are related to, for example, lack of security, limited possibilities for system customization and integration, lack of system performance, and supplier lock-in. These risks may cause organizations to avoid SaaS-based ERP systems, despite identified benefits. Earlier research has identified both benefits and risks with SaaS-based ERP systems, but little is known about why small and medium-sized organizations choose to implement such systems despite the risks associated with them. The aim of the study is therefore to create an understanding of why small and medium-sized organizations choose to implement SaaS-based ERP systems, despite known risks. The study's results indicate that understanding of risks, trust and confidence in the system vendor, reduced internal competence needs, and the level of comparative advantages are important for organizations' willingness and acceptance to implement SaaS-based ERP systems, despite risks. The study’s conclusions also contributed with recommendations for how systems suppliers of SaaS-based ERP systems can develop their value propositions. For example, system suppliers are advised to be honest and transparent in communicating with customer organizations, as well as collaborating with customer organizations throughout the implementation phase and after the completion of implementation projects.

Abstract:
Cloud-based enterprise resource planning system (ERP-system) is becoming increasingly popular and the benefits are many. The most recurrent challenge is data security because the enterprises left the control of data storage to the cloud supplier. For that reason, trust and safety are required between the cloud supplier and the enterprise. Data storage and security are one of the main reasons why enterprises are hesitant to invest in cloud-based ERP-systems. The purpose of the research was thus to identify significant aspects that create safety for SMEenterprises with data storage in cloud-based ERP-systems and answer the research question:“Which aspects are significant for SME-enterprises to feel safe with data storage in cloudbased ERP-systems?”. A qualitative approach has been applied to answer the research question. Semi-structured interviews have been used to investigate the area in depth. With analysis of the results, significant themes emerged which underlies this paper discussion and conclusion chapters. The safety aspects that was identified were the following: log management, two-factor authentication, segmentation, encrypted data, backups, data storage within the EU, agreements and standards, established cloud supplier and transparent cloud supplier. The conclusions of the research can support cloud suppliers and SME-enterprises about which aspects that are significant to create a perceived security with external data storage. It can generate in a more secure and trusting relationship between both parties when SME-enterprises hand over responsibility for data to the cloud supplier.

Abstract:
The emergence of cloud services is a trend that is increasingly effecting organizations which is considered the future of information technology. Today, large organizations are increasingly migrating their business-critical ERP-system to the cloud, despite being the one of the most risky, costly and time-consuming IT-investment that an organization can ever make. CloudbasedERP-system can bring several benefits, but also several security risks, such as storing organizational data with third-party suppliers. Security risks cannot be eliminated, but they need to be managed and reduced. This study has examined how big customer organizations handle security risks that may arise when using cloud-based ERP-systems. The study has identified three approaches to managing security risks. The first approach is to manage security risks through formal agreements with the cloud provider. The second approach to managing security risks is through internal processes such as data encryption. The third approach is to raise awareness and educate users in the organization.
