Abstract:
"Barriers to Closure" was a series of narratives specifically focusing on reoccurring thoughts, fears and anxieties within the artist's life. Instilled when he was younger, these anxieties were never resolved, thus creating additional fears as he grew into adolescence. Eventually they transformed into an intricate obstacle causing resolution to be a difficult task. These narratives are presented in thick bronze frames which constrain the content into a limited space. The pieces are purposefully small due to the artist's personal restriction of revealing what needs to be seen. Therefore, the viewer must draw closer to the piece in order to view the information presented and relate the body of work to their own hidden fears. This exhibition provided an outlet for the artist to deal with feelings that are difficult to explain/express. Communicating these anxieties through this series of visual narratives, assisted the artist in resolving many personal conflicts.

Tawn, Stephen James. "Plat closure of braids." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2008. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/854/.

Full text
Abstract:
Given a braid b ∈ B2n we can produce a link by joining consecutive pairs of strings at the top, forming caps, and at the bottom, forming cups. This link is called the plat closure of b. The set of all braids that fix the caps form a subgroup H2n and the plat closure of a braid is unchanged after multiplying on the left or on the right by elements of H2n. So plat closure gives a map from the double cosets H2n\B2n/H2n to the set of isotopy classes of non-empty links. As well moving within a double coset there is a stabilisation move which leaves the plat closure unchanged but increases the braid index by two and multiplies on the right by σ2n. Birman [2] has shown that any two braid with isotopic plat closures can be related by a sequence of double coset and stabilisation moves. In Chapter 1 we show that if we change the way we draw the cups then we can use twisted cabling as the stabilisation move. Moreover, we show that any two braids with equal plat closure can be stabilised until they lie in the same double coset. If we restrict to even braids then we can give the plat closure a well defined orientation. In this case we show that untwisted cabling can be used as the stabilisation move. Assuming an oriented version of Birman’s result we construct a groupoid G and two subgroupoids H+ and H− which satisfy the following. All the even braid groups embed in G. There is a plat closure map on G which takes the same value on the embedded even braid group. This plat closure is constant on the double cosets H+\G/H− and induces a bijection between double cosets and isotopy classes of non-empty oriented links. In Chapter 2 we compute a presentation for H2n. To do this we construct a 2-complex Xn on which H2n acts. Then we show that this complex is simply connected, the action is transitive on the vertex set and the the number of edge and face orbits is finite. We get generators from each edge orbit and relations from the edge and face orbits. In the final chapter we compute a presentation for the intersection of H2n and the pure braid group.

Salem, Mohamed A. "Functional verification coverage closure." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2015. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.685927.

Full text
Abstract:
Verification is a critical phase of the development cycle. It confirms the compliance of a design implementation with its functional specification. Coverage measures the progress of the verification plan. Structural coverage determines the code exercised by the functional tests. Modified Condition Decision Coverage (MC/DC) is a structural coverage type. This thesis is based on a comprehensive study for MC/DC conventions. It provides a new MC/DC test generation algorithm, presents associated MC/DC empirical work from which it draws novel insights into MC/DC utilization as a coverage metric, and investigates the design faults detection strength of MC/DC. The research results have had significant impact on industry. The MC/DC study in hardware verification is motivated by the MC/DC certification requirements for critical software applications, the MC/DC foundation on hardware principles like controllability and observability, and the linear growth of MC/DC test set. A new MC/DC test generation algorithm named OBSRV is developed, implemented, and optimized based on the D-algorithm. It is distinguished from conventional techniques as it is mainly based on logic analysis. The thesis provides the empirical work, and associated results that represent an exhaustive validation of OBSRV. It has identified novel MC/DC insights represented by the minimal MC/DC requirements optimization, the MC/DC compositionality aspects, and the design options for MC/DC fulfillment. The research has had direct impact on industrial MC/DC applications. A major EDA MC/DC product has been completely re-architected, and the verification of an industrial safety critical embedded processor has been guided for MC/DC fulfillment. It demonstrates the feasibility of MC/DC as an applicable solution for structural, and functional coverage by an evaluation that proves the MC/DC detection strength for main design faults in microprocessors. The results motivate the continuity of future research leading to MC/DC adoption as main metric for functional verification coverage closure in hardware, and software domain.

Fuenkajorn, Kittitep. "Borehole closure in salt." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184451.

Full text
Abstract:
Constitutive laws are developed to predict creep (time-dependent) closure of boreholes in salt specimens subjected to various loading configurations. Rheological models (linear and nonlinear viscoelastic and viscoplastic models), empirical models, and physical theory models have been formulated from the results of uniaxial creep tests, strain and stress rate controlled uniaxial tests, constant strain rate triaxial tests, cyclic loading tests, and seismic velocity tests. Analytical solutions for a thick-walled cylinder subjected to internal and external pressures and for a circular hole in an infinite plate subjected to a biaxial or uniaxial stressfield have been derived from each of the linear viscoelastic models and empirical laws. The experimental results indicate that the salt samples behave as an elastic-viscoplastic material. The elastic behavior tends to be linear and time-dependent while the plastic deformation is time-dependent. The stress increment to strain rate increment ratio gradually decreases as the stress level increases. The transient potential creep law (ε(c) = κσᵝtᵞ) seems to give the simplest governing equation describing the viscoplastic behavior of salt during the transient phase. Variation of intrinsic properties which is mainly contributed by nonuniform distribution of intercrystalline gaps and air voids plays a more significant role upon instantaneous deformation than upon transient deformation. The mechanisms governing the time-dependent deformation are fracture propagation, plastic flow and dislocation of the salt crystals, and healing of the intercrystalline gaps and induced fractures. Different sets of test parameters (strain and stress rates, differential and confining stresses, and testing times) induce different degrees and combinations of deformational mechanisms, which lead to a variation of the fitting parameters of the potential law. The transient potential creep model does not accurately predict the results of triaxial and polyaxial borehole closure experiments, probably due to the predictive capability of the model or the methods used in multiaxial formulation, or both. Since the model parameters apparently depend upon the main mechanisms governing creep rate, prediction of the salt deformation around a borehole subjected to a high stress gradient by using only a set of model parameters may not be accurate.

Abstract:
The de-industrialisation of the UK economy caused by globalised international markets, advancements in technology and production with changing consumer demands have made much of what was ‘traditional’ manufacturing redundant; this has led to industrial restructuring or even collapse, resulting in mass job redundancies. Market and industrial pressures have intensified since the late 1990s, culminating in the symbolic collapse of MG Rover in 2005 in addition to other key producers in the West Midlands, which represented the end of mass automotive production in the region (Donnelly et al. 2012). This came alongside various geographical, political and economic factors, including the restructuring of regional development agencies, prolonged industrial decline and a period of national economic recession, which presented challenges for any recovery. This thesis examines more precisely the closure of the commercial vehicle manufacturer LDV in 2009, once a part of the larger conglomerate British Leyland. The closure further reinforced the decline in UK automotive manufacturing until that point. The research involves the corporate collapse of LDV and the local government reaction to the closure and the following re-employment pathways of the redundant LDV workforce. The research continues the discussion of plant closures and the issues that redundant workers face when engaged in the labour market during economic recession. In particular, the thesis contribution employs a qualitative approach to examine the difficulties faced by the office tier, or ‘white collar’, workers who possess relatively high skills and who regarded as flexible and less vulnerable workers within the labour market. Yet this research exposes that highly skilled specialist workers are themselves also subject to unique issues when adjusting to the labour market. This topic is covered through the concept of worker trajectories: the research illustrates the unique employability issues and job precariousness that highly skilled workers can experience. The research concludes that the ability of highly skilled redundant workers to adapt effectively requires local job recovery strategies to implement short- and long-term policies with an emphasis on better job search and network development for individuals to sustain a resilient economy, and to mitigate the effects of plant closure upon redundant workers and maintain high skills within the region.

Bathgate, Jeanne M. "School Closure – A Case Study." University of Sydney, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/1777.

Abstract:
Doctor of Education
This case study looks at the impact of closing an urban secondary school. It considers the experiences of the students, the staff and the parents. It does not argue with the decision to close the school but concentrates on the experience for those most closely involved. The thesis is guided by the main research question which is: “What is the impact of school closure on the various elements of a school community and is there a way to close a school and minimise this impact?” Supplementary questions seek to describe how the closure was undertaken and what factors can be identified which helped ease the transition for those involved. While seeking to develop theory grounded in the research the findings have also been informed by theory associated with grief, place attachment, emotion in the workplace and change. Unpublished primary documents such as transcripts of group interviews, responses to written questionnaires and minutes of meetings are the basic sources of data for this thesis. The researcher was an active participant in the closure and well known to all respondents. The thesis concludes that although keeping the school open for the final year was of benefit to the morale and adjustment of staff it was probably less beneficial for the students involved. It suggests that with proper counselling support and identification of the closure as a critical incident, a quick closure would help student learning outcomes and prevent teacher de-skilling. It also confirms the importance of a school, or probably any institution, in the emotional life of those associated with it. Note: The students in this study range in age from 13 to 18 years of age in Years 7 through to 12.

Abstract:
Thesis (MSc (Mathematics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: As an introduction to point-free topology, we will explicitly show the connection between topology and frames (locales) and introduce an abstract notion, which in the point-free setting, can be thought of as a subspace of a topological space. In this setting, we refer to this notion as a sublocale and we will show that there are at least four ways to represent sublocales. By using the language of category theory, we proceed by investigating closure in the point-free setting by way of operators. We de ne what we mean by a coclosure operator in an abstract context and give two seemingly di erent examples of co-closure operators of Frm. These two examples are then proven to be the same. Compactness is one of the most important notions in classical topology and therefore one will nd a great number of results obtained on the subject. We will undertake a study into the interrelationship between three weaker compact notions, i.e. feeble compactness, pseudocompactness and countable compactness. This relationship has been established and is well understood in topology, but (to a degree) the same cannot be said for the point-free setting. We will give the frame interpretation of these weaker compact notions and establish a point-free connection. A potentially promising result will also be mentioned.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
During the last five years, successful mine closure has become one of Iscor Coal Business primary strategic focus areas. Three Iscor Coalmines are currently in different stages of closure, i.e. North Field, Hlobane and Dumacol and the demand on management time spent on this issue is increasing. The changing legal environment, especially issues concerning rehabilitation and mine closure, demands that every company must take full responsibility for any detrimental effect that their operations may have on the environment. This study concerns itself with establishing a generic procedure for mine closure. The interface with all stakeholders, external and internal, is considered. The primary focus areas are determined and the most important issues within each area are discussed in such a way that operational managers and strategists could use it as base knowledge for future closures. Applying the model to an actual closure process, i.e. the closure of Durnacol Coalmine, tested the validity of the model and it was verified that the process could be used as a base for future reference.

Pratt, Jane. "Turbulence, Magnetics, and Closure Equations." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2003. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/hmc_theses/133.

Full text
Abstract:
When a ferromagnet is heated, it loses its magnetism. Stars and planets have magnetic fields, as does the Earth. But it is known that the center of the Earth is very hot. Therefore, to sustain the large magnetic field of a planet, we cannot look to simple ferromagnetism like that of a bar magnet, but we have to look at the movement of electric charges within the Earth’s molten core to generate magnetic field. This magnetic field sustainment against ohmic dissipation by turbulent flow is referred to as the turbulent dynamo effect. Theoretical research into the mechanisms that create the dynamo has been actively pursued for several decades, culminating recently in massive computer simulations of the Earth’s core. Most of these studies have employed the equations of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), a nonlinear theory of electrically conducting fluids. The EDQNM (Eddy-Damped Quasi-Normal Markovian) closure is a statistical model designed so that the turbulence equations derived from Navier-Stokes dynamics can be closed and satisfy the realizability condition of positivity of the kinetic energy spectrum. In case of MHD turbulence, realizability requires more work. We have proved in an earlier work that equations analogous to those expected of the EDQNM closure for MHD without mean fields satisfy the appropriate realizability conditions (Turner and Pratt 1999). In this work, we discuss requirements needed to make the MHD equations realizable with mean fields, extending those of neutral fluid turbulence by Turner [1]. Finally, we discuss direct numerical simulations and the correspondence of the statistical theories with simulation results.

Prendergast, Christopher Alan. "A Birmingham psychogeography : continuity and closure." Thesis, Keele University, 2015. http://eprints.keele.ac.uk/2488/.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been some sociological interest in MG Rover’s decline and widespread deindustrialisation in Birmingham. However, little research has considered the proximity of Rover’s closure in 2005 to another seminal event for the city – the opening of the Bullring shopping centre in 2003. These events appear indicative of Daniel Bell’s conception of ‘postindustrialism’. This thesis uses the tradition of ‘psychogeography’ to critique postindustrialism in Birmingham, examining the city’s collective psyche from a dynamic literary perspective. In Chapter 1, Daniel Bell’s predictions (made in 1973) of the likely characteristics of a post-industrial society are outlined and measured against recent economic and social events in Birmingham. In Chapter 2, the tradition of psychogeography is critically analysed, from Situationism and Kevin Lynch’s The Image of the City in the 1960s to the contemporary works of Iain Sinclair and Rebecca Solnit. I explore the argument that the key tenet of psychogeography missing from the work of contemporary practitioners is a utopian element with which writers theorize alternative forms of the city. This chapter provides a theoretical basis for both the use of literary montage and Stirchley’s inclusion in the psychogeography. Consequently, Chapters 3, 4 and 5 constitute the psychogeography itself, moving through three key geographical areas. These chapters offer a creative-critical representation of Birmingham in montage form, weaving fragments of narration with literary, theoretical and sociological works and considering the impacts of technology, industry and post-industrial urbanism on the city’s landscape and psyche. The discussion of Raymond Williams’s ‘mobile privatisation’ in Longbridge provides a catalyst for the consideration, in the final chapter, of a porous but socially divisive architecture in the Bullring. As the psychogeography progresses, the suburb of Stirchley and the Bullring market-area both emerge as contested spaces and, simultaneously, blueprints for an alternative form of the city. This thesis celebrates the variety, incoherence and inclusiveness of both spaces.

Abstract:
Although typically associated with the provision of low-cost holiday accommodation, for over 30 years city-based caravan parks have provided an unrecognised source of permanent housing to the lower end of the market. Due to their often dilapidated condition and the demographic profile of their residents, caravan parks do not fit within the Australian housing ideal and are often considered enclaves of despondency. Residents are subject to harsh stereotypes and are often referred to as ??trailer trash?? ?? a tag which originated in the USA. However the reality is that caravan parks provide significant social benefits and are unique living environments for their permanent residents. This research involved an extensive discourse analysis complemented by in-depth interviews with caravan park residents and industry stakeholders, which found that the residential experience is typically based on solidarity, companionship, pride and a true sense of belonging. As urban land prices in Australia have increased exponentially and the footprints of its capital cities continue to grow, large parcels of under-developed land accommodating caravan parks have become ??land banks?? ripe for redevelopment. While it is the park owner??s prerogative to maximise profit, individuals and households are being displaced with little or no compensation, to make way for more lucrative land uses. With deficiencies in the public housing system and the failure of the housing market to provide an adequate level of low-cost accommodation, caravan park residents face an uncertain future, even homelessness. However, the understated impact of this trend is the social implications which affect some of the community??s most vulnerable members. The loss of home, community disintegration and feelings of insecurity appear to be disregarded in the planning process, and this trend seems certain to continue with a lack of responsibility and strategic vision by the government. For this reason, the continued closure of Sydney??s caravan parks should not be tolerated for the purpose of land profiteering. A comprehensive all-of-government and industry response is urgently required to address the threats to Sydney??s caravan parks and to develop mitigation strategies aimed at reducing the resultant outcomes for their vulnerable residents.

Lemon, David John. "The Closure of the Templeton Centre." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Sociology, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/920.

Full text
Abstract:
This M.A. thesis argues that the closure of the Templeton Centre was caused by the convergence of political, social and economic trends in psychopaedic care, occurring in other Western countries. The research paper commences with an historical exploration of the emergence of state institutions. It continues with an investigation of the role scandals played in creating the demand for the closure of psychopaedic institutions. The disability rights movements' discourse of 'normalisation', is shown as the social ideological force in the closure of state institutions, while neo-liberal ideology is seen to exploit deinstitutionalisation for economic gains. The research concludes with an assessment of parental and public reactions to the community placement of people with intellectual disabilities and an analysis of the positive outcomes and negative consequences of deinstitutionalisation. While current research on the closure of the Templeton Centre has explored the effect of deinstitutionalisation on the intellectually disabled and their respective families, the contribution of this research to the subject is its exploration of the sociological causes and effects of the deinstitutionalisation of the Templeton Centre The research methodology involved the collection, collation and interpretation of primary and secondary documents to construct a sociological account of the deinstitutionalistion of the Templeton Centre. The primary sources include health and social welfare documents, newsletters and letters and the secondary sources comprises books, journals and newspaper articles. The principal argument is that the Western political, social and economic ideologies which converged at differing times to create, shape and eventually close psychopaedic institutions, also affected the Templeton Centre (1929 to 1999) in New Zealand. The research paper's conclusion is that Western political, social and economic trends will continue to shape New Zealand Governments' policies on people with intellectual disabilities. Therefore, disability research specialists must continue to study changes on the international stage, to enable them to predict the probable discourses, issues and events which will inevitably occur in New Zealand.

Abstract:

This study investigates the political economy of military base closure: the federal and local public policy process and how it impacts the economic efficiency of public resource allocation. It describes and analyzes the socio-economic factors affecting the communities surrounding military bases targeted for closure. It does not discuss or analyze the base closure decision making process and which base should remain open or close. A primary case study was used for research: George Air Force Base, Victorville, California which has been undergoing the actual closure process for approximately two years. This thesis draws on historical studies by the government and private individuals which conclude that military base closures most often result in positive socio-economic effects on local communities. Since no base has been closed in the United States in eleven years, our case study analyzes the efficacy of these historical reports and provides conclusions that suggest the closure of a military base and its transition into the private sector may provide strong stimulation to most local economies.

Abstract:
Neural tube defects (NTDs) are amongst the commonest birth defects, affecting 1 in 1000 pregnancies. During neurulation, failure of neural tube closure in the low spinal region (at the posterior neuropore, PNP) results in spina bifida. Mechanical force relationships in the normally closing neural tube and in the NTD-developing neural tube were investigated through incision of the most recently closed neural tube roof, in order to eliminate tension in the closed region. After incision in wild-type embryos, immediate springing apart (re-opening) of the elevating neural folds was observed, associated with partial relaxation of the bending degree of the Dorsolateral Hinge Points (DLHP) and the Median Hinge Point (MHP) in transverse sections. When incision was performed on Zic2 mutant embryos developing spina bifida, a larger re-opening of neural folds was observed than in wild-type controls. These findings coincided with measurements of the elastic modulus of the mutant NPs using Atomic Force Microscopy, which revealed that the dorsal NP of the mutant embryos is stiffer than wild-type. Finite Element Method (FEM) modelling also showed that a larger closing force is required for a stiffer NP. Moreover, in unincised embryos, nuclei were found to be more elongated in the wild-type NP, where DLHPs are present, than in the mutant NP, where DLHPs are absent, suggesting possible roles of cell packing in DLHP formation. In conclusion, apposition of the NFs is an elastic process exogenously driven by the force field that originates from the most recently closed point. DLHP formation, however, is a partially plastic process, closely related to cell packing within the dorsal NP as an endogenous event. In Zic2 mutant embryos, a stiffer NP and the absence of cell-packing in the dorsal NP region are perhaps the main mechanical causes of spinal neurulation failure.

Abstract:
Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma (PACG) is a worldwide leading cause of irreversible blindness much more prevalent in Asia than in European-derived populations. Patterns of ethnic differences may account for prevalence variation of the disease. Recent papers have reported a predicted rise in European-derived populations. Ocular risks associated with PAC(G) include an axially small, hypermetropic eye with a large lens. Potentially, there are patients in the UK with 'at risk' ocular biometrics predisposing them to PAC(G). Biometric disparities between ethnicities infer morphological variation of PAC(G).The morphology of PAC(G) can be evaluated using ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and the development of a novel linear probe has enhanced its clinical utility. UBM allows quantitative analysis of the anterior chamber, however, there are inherent difficulties in identifying the landmark scleral spur. Qualitative image analyses are urgently required to assess the morphology of closure. Clinical grading scales (CGS) have been successful in other areas within ophthalmology; their application to PAC(G) is investigated within this thesis. The specific aims of the thesis are to: a) examine biometric differences between Caucasian & Chinese patients with PAC(G); b) describe the development of a series of CGS for PAC(G) and c) validate the CGS.Biometric differences between Chinese and Caucasian sample populations exist. The Caucasian cohort exhibit typical biometric findings associated with PAC(G): significantly smaller eyes, shallower anterior chambers, larger lenses, and a significantly shorter vitreous depth, when compared to Chinese counterparts. Biometric differences lend support to variation of PAC(G) mechanisms between ethnicities. A series of clinical CGS were developed using a 'consensus' based approach. The results: utilize psychometric techniques to evaluate inter-observer error; analyse intra-observer agreement by visualising concordance; target pruning to eliminate inter-observer confusion when constructing the CGS. A new custom-made software was developed to evaluate the performance of the CGS. The results show good intra- and inter- observer repeatability to characterise the morphology of closure. This is the first study describing a comprehensive method to construct and validate CGS in PAC(G). These can be used to evaluate the morphology of closure and in the future assess the fidelity of PAC(G) management.

Abstract:
This project defines a decision support system developed to permit the user to perform a cost - benefit analysis for any military installation cited for closure, relocation, or privatization. The procedure recognizes both the economic costs and strategic benefits of a feasible solution. Though the cost estimates for a particular study may vary in magnitude, the economic portion of the model must focus on the net savings to the tax payer. Detailed cost estimates for each alternative have been developed at a level so that sensitivity analysis can be performed on any of the input parameters. Individual cost elements have been summed to yield the net cost increase / decrease to the United States tax payer. The resultant cost figures were converted to an economic score. The paper also describes a effective method to evaluate the benefits derived from implementing various alternatives. By incorporating a group participative process using multivoting and the Dunn-Rankin technique, the values resulting fro m benefits have yielded a benefits score. The Brown-Gibson model, which considers both subjective and objective measures, was used to depict the combination of economic and benefit scores to provide an overall cost - benefit score. A graphical illustrat ion of the cost - benefit tradeoffs serves as a useful tool in assessing the risk associated with a decision. The results of the analysis have supported the Department of the Navy's decision to privatize the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, Indianapolis, IN. The Department of Defense is considering alternatives for many military installations, this process will facilitate those decisions.

Brito, Kazh. "Hole Closure in Langmuir Fluid Monolayers." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2007. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/hmc_theses/192.

Abstract:
Amphipathic molecules are basically long chains, one end of which likes water (is hydrophilic) and the other end abhors it (is hydrophobic). These molecules tend to sit vertically in a fluid and adhere to each other. This attraction of adjacent molecules causes the molecules to condense into regions, referred to as polymer Langmuir layer domains, which are a single molecule thick and behave like a two dimensional fluid. This attraction also manifests itself as a line tension, analogous to surface tension in a fluid droplet, which causes the regions to become circular as they attempt to minimize the length of their perimeter. Often the layer will form holes, gaps in the liquid monolayer which contain a much smaller density of molecules. In the presence of humidity, the holes are observed to close up, pulled together by the line tension as well as condensation of the hole molecules at the boundary. Previous researchers have computed the fluid velocity for the process when the hole is assumed to be a vacuum. I, however, propose to replace this model with a gas, adding condensation of gas from the hole into the liquid domain of the monolayer to the line tension force. The hope is to obtain a mathematical model that better corresponds to the physical problem than current models do.

Abstract:
State-of-the-art LIDAR odometry techniques are exceptionally precise. However, while they solve the localization problem, they perform mapping on-the-run, not being able to close loops, neither re-localize in previously visited environments. This study is concerned with the development of a system that combines an accurate laser odometry estimator, with algorithms for place recognition in order to detect trajectory loops. This project uses widely available datasets from urban driving scenarios and outdoor areas for development and evaluation of the system The results obtained confirm that loop closure detection can significantly improve the accuracy and robustness of laser SLAM pipelines, with detectors based on point cloud segments and visual features displaying very strong performance during the evaluation phase.

"Socio-Economic Mine Closure (SEMC) framework : a comprehensive approach for addressing the socio-economic challenges of mine closure." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45595.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to investigate the initiatives that address the socio-economic implications of mine closure that have been implemented by three mining companies which are located in Mongolia, Argentina and Canada. It further addresses the perceptions of stakeholders, specifically community members, local government representatives and mining company employees regarding the initiatives that have been implemented by three mining companies. Additionally, the research examines six mining industry-related frameworks/guidelines, and explores the ways in which these documents interpret the socio-economics of mine closure. Finally, this thesis introduces and evaluates the Socio-Economic Mine Closure (SEMC) Framework, which was originally developed as part of this PhD investigation. There are 10 elements in the Framework: Policy, Presence, Participation, Planning, Performance, Promotion, Perseverance, Patience, Passion, and Personality. The SEMC Framework is assessed in multiple ways: a) against the current literature on mine closure; b) through an online survey in which 151 experts were invited to provide feedback on the elements and sub-element constituents of the Framework and c) by its utility in constructing the fieldwork survey and the feedback of survey participants indicating the appropriateness of the framework. The study indicates that it would be relevant, timely and appropriate for the mining industry to introduce, discuss and adopt the proposed SEMC Framework. The case study analyses, all of which employed interviews, group sessions, and distribution of survey material as part of their methodological approaches, reveal that each case has unique characteristics and that all are context-based. The case studies also indicate that all three situations reveal the presence of some common issues. For instance, the results of the study suggest that, in all three cases, communication levels need to be improved and augmented. An important finding of the overall study concerns the element Personality within the SEMC Framework. Although in both the online survey and in the survey distributed to study participants, this element was ranked as one of low importance, through the interviews, group sessions and researcher observations it became clear that the Personality of the company community liaison does play a significant role in maintaining and fostering relationships between mining companies and local stakeholders.

Morton, Robert J. "School closure: Through the eyes of teachers." Diss., Wichita State University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/2384.

Abstract:
This phenomenological study examined eight teachers in Kansas, who experienced school closing within the past three years. The results of this research indicated themes of death and dying, organizational culture, change, and emotion. The research further identified five distinct categories for each of the themes during interviews. The five categories were communication, political, community, transition, and student. Unlike traditional empirical research design, phenomenological research focused on descriptions of experience as an expression of one’s unique meaningful experience rather than a learned response to stimuli (Polkinghorne, 1989). Data were analyzed using the general processes of Moustakas (1994) and van Kaam (1959, 1966). Analysis used an eight step techniques to identify essential characteristics of the experience. Teachers recommended that district leadership staff conduct clear communication with school staff, implement an organized school closure process, and provide support for physical and emotional needs.

Elder, James H. "Contour closure and the perception of shape." Thesis, McGill University, 1992. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=56775.

Abstract:
By modulating the degree of closure of the outlines, I show that two-dimensional shape processing is rapid for closed stimuli but slow for open stimuli. I further show that search speed can be characterized as a smooth, monotonic function of the degree of closure, supporting the notion of a perceptual closure continuum. This continuum is shown to be naturally parameterized by a dot-spacing metric, and experiments with different types of fragmentation lead to the hypothesis of a Minimax Principle of closure, which imposes a partial ordering over all fragmentations of a given contour. Using search speed as a metric for the perceptual closure of various figures leads to an equivalence relation between perceptual closure and the confidence of object inference. Under this metric, perceptual closure is found to be independent from various surface completion and texture processes and highly sensitive to contrast sign reversal, supporting the existence of a limited-complexity shape from contour process in early vision. Perceptual closure is shown to be nonlinear in several respects: a simple model of one such nonlinearity is proposed.

Mirzaei, Majid. "On fatigue crack closure analysis and measurement." Thesis, McGill University, 1991. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=70339.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes a novel approach to the analysis of fatigue crack closure phenomena. Based on the proposed model, the combined effect of residual plastic stretch, asperity mismatch, and corrosion debris on the closure behavior of a fatigue crack can be simulated by a hypothetical rigid insert located in an ideal crack wake. Accordingly, the crack closing period can be modeled by a gradual contact between the ideal crack faces and the rigid insert.
The formulation of the model results in a set of equations which can predict the closure load as well as the load-CMOD characteristics using the residual CMOD at zero load as a unique experimental input. Based on the initial model, the final form of the derived equations are either logarithmic or quadratic. While the latter can be solved directly for the closure load, the former requires a numerical solution.
The model qualitatively predicts the effect of gradual crack wake removal on the crack closure load level and the load-CMOD behavior. It also accounts for the response of a cracked component to an anomalous crack wake formed by single or block overloads.
The model is verified, both qualitatively and quantitatively, using specifically designed experimental techniques, a variety of specimen sizes, and two different alloys.

Ezeigwe, Ifeoma Daramfon. "Drosophila myosin VI function in dorsal closure." Thesis, University of Kent, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.589941.

Full text
Abstract:
Myosin VI is a minus-end directed actin-based motor protein. In vertebrate cells, myosin VI is of importance in endocytic and exocytic-membrane trafficking pathways, and in regulating Golgi morphology. Myosin VI is also implicated in genetic diseases and is transcriptionally regulated upon DNA damage in a p53-dependent manner and shown to be over-expressed in cancer types. In Drosophila, myosin VI encoded by the jaguar (jar) gene is implicated in a range of cellular processes including dorsal closure. Although understanding of its cellular function is developing, little is known about the mechanisms regulating myosin VI. In vitro studies on vertebrate myosin VI have demonstrated that it is phosphorylated within its motor domain by the serine/threonine kinase P AK and that alters its function in a similar manner to that which occurs in myosin I. More importantly, jar has a Pak phosphorylation site in the same location as the vertebrate myosin VI. Expression of either a dominant negative Jar or a dominant negative Pak causes if not exact, overlapping dorsal phenotypes in Drosophila. The aim of this study was to investigate a working model that Jar functions during dorsal closure are dependent on Pak-mediated phosphorylation. During my thesis research a published report concluded that jar is required but not essential for Drosophila development as 40% null jar mutants survived. On the contrary, I report here that jar is of importance for development as RNA i-mediated knockdown of Jar protein level is lethal and is found to cause abnormal dorsal closure. Further delineation of jar322 mutant allele showed varied phenotypes including wing defects that implicates jar in Notch signalling and in integrin function and signalling. Importantly, I found that Jar is directly regulated by JNK transcriptional activation pathway and down-regulated by the RhoGTPase pathway. Together this work emphasises the multi functional nature of myosin VI. Further the work suggests that the pro-survival function of vertebrate myosin VI is conserved in Drosophila.
