Full textThe Swedish Armed Forces are transforming to be able to conduct military operations in today’sstandard conflicts. To meet the demands that the new type of conflict represents the transformationrequires a development of new doctrines and tactical manuals. .Developments of new weapon systems are proportionately much more expensive than conceptualdevelopments. The armed forces’ combat capability must be adapted to existing military technologicalconditions. During the 1980s and 1990s Close Air Support aircrafts were represented by heavily armedand armoured fixed- and rotary-wing aircrafts which carried out CAS missions in close proximity tofriendly forces. These CAS platforms are today, more or less, represented by traditional fighter andstriker aircrafts. This observation will form the basis of this research and thereby formulate thescientific question.Has the significance of Close Air Support been changed and is it therefore made it possible to useother combat aircrafts for Close Air Support missions? The purpose of this thesis is to examine how Close Air Support has been put in practise in threemodern operations and to ascertain how this has developed the concept to what it is today.Furthermore the thesis will also clarify the significance of the concept and thereby contribute withknowledge to the concept of Close Air Support. The research will analyze the concept’s historical origin and the theory behind combined arms. Thisanalysis will form the basis for the following case studies, which comprise three military operationscarried out after 1990. The research will focus on coordination, platforms and operational and tacticaleffects. The final discussion will show that coordination of CAS has been executed differently during the threestudied operations. Today’s conflicts make it possible to use weapon systems in an extended role. Thiswill explain why different combat aircraft could be used in a CAS role. The research shows that theCAS concept hasn’t changed. However, CAS has been performed in different ways depending on theoperational circumstances within each operation. The thesis suggests three new research areas within the subject that could be appropriate for furtherexaminations.

Full textIn the present time amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an untreatable disease and the course of the disease is often very fast. Nursing of the patients has to be specific. Purpose: The purpose of this literature study was to elucidate caregivers encounter of patients with an untreatable disease like ALS and those who are close to the patients. Method: To answer our research questions we have chosen to do a literature study witch is based on ten scientific articles. The articles were quality rated using Carlsson and Eimans ratingscale for qualitative and quantitative studies. As a frame of reference we used a model by Carnevali. Result: To be one of those who are close to the patients with ALS can affect them in a negative way in their daily life. All patients and those who are close to them have to be encountered by their own needs and individual information is an important part of nursing. Conclusion: From our result we made the conclusions that all patients and those who are close to them are individuals and should be encountered by their personal needs.

This paper aims to examine the need for indirect fire and Close Air Support of military operations in mountainous terrain, highlighting the aspects that affect the use of Swedish armed forces units and their technical systems in the mountain environment. To answer the purpose of this paper the following question was asked: How did U.S. forces use the basic capacity of effect to the opponent during Operation Anaconda? A case study and text analysis has been used as a scientific method and technique for this thesis. Initially texts about Operation Anaconda were studied on how the operation was carried out. Then Swedish doctrines and regulations relating to theories of basic abilities and the effect achieved in the battle were studied. Finally, the writer analyzed how the U.S. used the basic capacity of effect during Operation Anaconda, with an emphasis on indirect fire and close air support. The main conclusions are that the battle is carried out in three dimensions with indirect fire, direct fire and mines. All are essential to achieved effect in the battle. If one dimension diminishes the other dimensions should increase by more elements.

Full textAbstract The present Study have by title “Terminal Guidance and Air Attacks inside Special Operations: Outline of Joint Operations.” The objectives of the present study are the skills that must be obtained by elements of Portuguese Special Operations Forces, based in Lamego, for the execution of the military capability, Terminal Guidance and Air Attacks. The investigation begins in the concept of Operational Environment, developing along the typology of Non-Conventional Operations, more specifically inside the definion of Special Operations, seeking to characterize the Forces that are responsable for conducting this operations, the Special Operations Forces. The study continues with the typology and definition of Air Operations, emphasizing the concept of Close Air Support, and the importance of the Forward Air Cont roller in the conduct of this operations. The final stage is based on the study of a possible relationship between the Portuguese Air Force and Special Operations Forces for the acquisition of the skills of a Forward Air Controller. This study ends with the presentation of its conclusions, which we can point out, that the Portuguese Special Operations Forces must obtain the qualifications of Forward Air Controller to conduct Terminal Guidance, which qualifications must be obtained through a cooperation with the Portuguese Air Force. In summary, this Work is primarily directed to the Special Operations Troops Center, because it evaluates different forms of employment to the Special Operations Forces conduct Operations of Terminal Guidance and Air Attacks.

Full textIn the beginning of the 21st century, Sweden started to develop the capability to perform CAS insupport to ground troops. It has been clarified that CAS performed in the present Afghanistanconflict sometimes has been accused of not coinciding with international law. The purpose of thisthesis is to examine what measures the contemporary research advocate regarding the use of CASso it will be performed in the highest possible quality regarding target acquisition and target hit,and by that what the Swedish Air Force possibly could do in order to minimize the risk ofviolating international law when implementing CAS in international Peace Support Operations. The research is formed around three main questions. First, what international laws are applicableto Swedish units during an international operation? Second, what actions might be taken in orderto reduce the risk for unintended damage to civilians or civilian infrastructure when conductingCAS and finally what measures should the Swedish air force take to minimize the risk to violatethe international law while conducting CAS in peace support/peace keeping operations. The result of this research shows that the Swedish Air Force, in order to operate within theframework of international law, needs to conduct training in a similar and realistic environmentwith live ammunition. The training needs to be entailing a moral and ethical view from ahumanistic perspective. Furthermore, regarding the effect, there need to be weapons with bothnon-lethal to lethal effects with high precision. Finally, the communication between the pilots andthe Forward Air Controller (FAC) needs to be built upon technical equipment with high standard.

Full textThe development in the field of UAVs is extensive and gaining in focus andinterest as their mission catalogue is widened. The recent use of weaponizedUAVs in Afghansistan and Iraq to combat an array of targets has shown theirpotential. At the same time there is an ongoing development of offensivesystemes known as UCAVs, designed to strike targets all throughout thebattlespace.Land operations demands systems which allow tempo, flexibility and the useof combined effects to achieve the maximum possible dislocation of theopponent. The author arrives at preconditions for such systems to partakeeffectively by outlining land operations and describing the conduct of closesupport of land formations. Today, the air to ground support part of it iscontrolled by a forward air controller who controls manned platforms andtheir weapon systems. This thesis also describes UCAV systems and theircomponents with focus on authonomy, sensors, communications and weaponsystems.By connecting the conduct of landoperations, close support in general andclose air support (CAS) especially with the description of UCAV systems, thepurpose of the thesis is to outline how CAS to land operations can beconducted with UCAVs. The thesis does this by answering the questions as tohow to control CAS with UCAV and which demands that must be met by theUCAV system.

Full textFacing a transformation of the armed forces both individual units and the organization will be confrontedwith new tasks and challenges. For the air force this could cause some problems due to the fact that it oftentakes some time from decision to implementation of new weapons and technical systems. This is not thecase with political objectives; they can change from one defense decision to another. When the politicalaim and direction regarding the air force capacity for global operations now also includes the ability tosupport the Nordic Battle Group, do the air force and the JAS 39C have the right means to carry out CloseAir Support in modern international conflicts? The purpose of this essay is to analyze if JAS 39C with its weapon-, sensor-, and communication systemscomply with the modern demands on a fighter aircraft carrying out Close Air Support in international operations. With the support of an analytical framework containing theories, doctrines and modern experiencesboth the requirements that lay the foundation for an effective accomplishment of Close Air Supportand a specific analytical instrument has been identified. The analytical instrument was thereafter used toanalyze JAS 39C and its ability to carry out Close Air Support. The results of the analysis show that JAS 39C, technically and materially, in all likelihood will be able tocarry out Close air support as early as 2008. Its strength being the ability to carry out precision engagementstogether with a high responsiveness and its weakness consisting in the lack of all-weather capacity. The results furthermore indicates that the foundation for an effective accomplishment of Close Air Supportcan be found within both moral related pre-conditions as well as conceptual or purely physical preconditions.A solution only focused on fulfilling physical pre-conditions may therefore risk that the combinedeffect and the effectiveness of a future Close Air Support mission will not reach the desired level.

The ability to fabricate structures and engineer materials on the nanoscale leads to the development of new devices and the study of exciting phenomena. Nanostructures attached to the surface of a substrate, in a manner that renders them immobile, have numerous potential applications in a diverse number of areas. Substrate-supported nanostructures can be fabricated using numerous modalities; however the easiest and most inexpensive technique to create a large area of randomly distributed particles is by the technique of thermal dewetting. In this process a metastable thin film is deposited at room temperature and heated, causing the film to lower its surface energy by agglomerating into droplet-like nanostructures. The main drawbacks of nanostructure fabrication via this technique are the substantial size distributions realized and the lack of control over nanostructure placement. In this doctoral dissertation, a new pathway for imposing order onto the thermal dewetting process and for manipulating the size, placement, shape and composition of preformed templates is described. It sees the confinement of substrate-supported thin films or nanostructure templates by the free surface of a metal film or a second substrate surface. Confining the templates in this manner and heating them to elevated temperatures leads to changes in the characteristics of the nanostructures formed. Three different modalities are demonstrated which alters the preformed structures by: (i) subtracting atoms from the templates, (ii) adding atoms to the template or (iii) simultaneously adding and subtracting atoms. The ability to carry out such processes depends on the choice of the confining surface and the nanostructured templates used. A subtractive process occurs when an electroformed nickel mesh is placed in conformal contact with a continuous gold film while it dewets, resulting in the formation of a periodic array of gold microstructures on an oxide substrate surface. When heated the gold beneath the grid selectively attaches to it due to the surface energy gradient which drives gold from the low surface energy oxide surface to the higher surface energy nickel mesh. With this process being confined to areas adjacent to and in contact with the grid surface the film ruptures at well-defined locations to form isolated islands of gold and subsequently, a periodic array of microstructures. The process can be carried out on substrates of different crystallographic orientations leading to nanostructures which are formed epitaxially and have orientations based on underlying substrate orientations. The process can be extended by placing a metallic foil of Pt or Ni over preformed templates, in which case a reduction in the size of the initial structures is observed. Placing a foil on structures with random placement and a wide size distribution results, not only in a size reduction, but also a narrowed size distribution. Additive processes are carried out by using materials which possess high vapor pressures much below the sublimation temperature of the template materials. In this case a germanium substrate was used as a source of germanium adatoms while gold or silver nanostructures were used as heterogeneous nucleation sites. At elevated temperatures the adatoms collect in sufficient quantities to transform each site into a liquid alloy which, upon cooling, phase separates into elemental components sharing a common interface and, hence, resulting in the formation of heterodimers and hollowed metal nanocrescents upon etching away the Ge. A process which combined aspects of the additive and subtractive process was carried out by using a metallic foil with a high vapor pressure and higher surface energy than the substrate surface (in this case Pd foil). This process resulted in the initial preformed gold templates being annihilated and replaced by nanostructures of palladium, thereby altering their chemical composition. The assembly process relies on the concurrent sublimation of palladium and gold which results in the complete transfer of the templated gold from the substrate to the foil, but not before the templates act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for palladium adatoms arriving to the substrate surface. Thus, the process is not only subtractive, but also additive due to the addition of palladium and removal of gold.

Full textMost infectious diseases are contracted in indoor environments. The time spent and the confinement in these spaces fosters the emergence and transmission of certain respiratory viruses. Various studies have shown a link between the presence of viruses on surfaces and infections. The role of the environment on the survival of the virus, particularly the relative share of fomites, although briefly mentioned, remains unknown. This research aims to evaluate the propensity of media to inhibit the transmission of viruses. In this context, the aim of this work is to study the role of building materials and products. The originality of this thesis lies in the development of methodologies to reproduce contaminating surface contamination by oropharyngeal emission, using a saliva substitute associated with two modes of surface contamination: airborne contamination and droplets deposition. Monitoring of contamination is provided by two quantitative approaches. One based on the RNA of the viral particles and the other on the infectivity of viral particles. The results show that the virus is able to retain some of its infectivity after an artificial aerosolization. They also highlight the ability of certain materials, such as copper and the linoleum to affect the viral genome according to the mode of contamination. However, some materials can preserve infectivity for at least 24 hours
