Abstract:
The stochastic volatility of daily foreign exchange (FX) derivatives poses a number of risks for the international banking community. Settlement risk, liquidity risk and capital adequacy are just a few immediate concerns that arise from such volatility. This thesis examines the impact of close-out netting on minimising the stochastic volatility of inter-bank FX derivatives. The problem with close-out netting is that although it is a simple formula of taking the differences between two banks at one point in time, it is the stochastic and volatile nature of FX rates that makes measuring the full impact of netting difficult. The objective of this thesis is to establish a realistic international banking framework or modelling environment in which close-out netting can be scientifically applied and examined. Five international daily FX rates will be used as sufficient approximations for five international banks. A generalised autoregressive conditionally heteroschedastic (GARCH) modelling approach is adopted as a robust and rich FX volatility paradigm. Then through Monte Carlo simulation of the resulting fitted GARCH models, we generate the distributions -with and without close-out netting. The findings of this thesis are interesting, showing that close-out netting is far more than just a simple mathematical process. Netting surely does reduce each bank's exposure to FX volatility, however, its multivariate nature reveals some important results for banking risk research and bank analysts.

Maritz, S. I. "Evaluating the contribution made by works order close-out meetings at Nampak Flexible Ndabeni." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/5749.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper was to prove the contribution of the Works Order Close-Out Meeting process at Nampak Flexible Ndabeni, through the development of a Close-Out Meeting contribution evaluation model. Although the value of the Close-Out Meeting process is intuitively understood, a formal measurement would underscore the importance of the process. Using a funnel-based analysis, a total of 63 Close-Out Meeting findings was identified for formal benefit review and were categorised into five finding groups. For each of these five groups a contribution measurement methodology was developed. The methodology was rooted in sound management and ERP theory and then applied to the findings in each group. The following key groups were identified and discussed: Incorrect standards. The importance of correct standards was shown, and the potential misstatement due to incorrect standards was quantified. The analysis showed that effective, ongoing variance review can identify errors in standards and that changes can be initiated and authorised in a short timeframe. ERP process review. Findings that specifically addressed lack of proper process were reviewed and real benefit was calculated for three categories, namely information misstatement, risk mitigation and productivity gains. Formulas were developed and applied for the benefit calculation. The analysis showed it is dangerous to assume that processes are cast in stone or fundamentally sound, and that the Close-Out review process not only identifies deficiency of these processes, but initiates corrective action. Shop floor process review. The investigation into findings that addressed process conformance showed that in most cases the process breakdowns related to the accuracy of information captured into the ERP. The impact of poor information, process non-conformance and corrective action was clearly shown. Actions to improve performance. Targeted actions to improve production performance were subdivided into actions that improved productivity and actions that reduced the risk of recurrence of a negative event. Benefits were calculated using established methods, and in both cases the benefit was substantial. Business decision confirmation. The Close-Out Meeting sometimes forced analysis that did not lead to action but to a better understanding of the business reality. What was shown is that the ability to identify, list and analyse findings of this nature added value. By expanding the benefit analysis beyond a simplistic implementation of corrective action, the scope of benefits was increased. The study achieved several objectives. The analysis showed that corrective actions taken by management have a scientific base and that the implementation of corrective actions delivered real business value. This allowed the business to place the Close-Out Meetings in the correct context, as the business could conclude that Close-Out Meetings were fundamental to its continued success. From a theoretical point of view the body of knowledge around Close-Out Meetings was expanded, while the results also supported the Nampak ERP value case. Close-Out Meetings at Nampak Flexible delivered clear, measurable benefits when discussion points were converted to actions that were acted upon by the business. The value was of such a nature to confirm the importance of Close-Out Meetings as a component of good ERP-manufacturing practice.
Ondersteuning by besluitneming.

Hsin, Olivia. "Growing Out of Adolescence: Conceptions of Adulthood, Close Relationships, and Health Behaviors of Emerging Adults with HIV." Scholarly Repository, 2011. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/627.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: The current study examined conceptions of adulthood, close personal relationships, and health behaviors (dietary intake, substance use, sexual behaviors) of emerging adults aged 18-30 with horizontally-infected HIV. Emerging adults were expected to differ in levels of achievement of adulthood tasks. The quality of close relationships, and perceptions of close friends’ behaviors were hypothesized to be associated with health behaviors. Method: Utilizing a cross-sectional design, 48 emerging adults with HIV (64.6% female; M age = 22.59, SD = 3.17) from a youth-based clinic serving most of Miami-Dade County were recruited. Participants completed measures on markers of adulthood, close friend and romantic partner qualities, health behaviors, and perceptions of close peers’ health behaviors using Filemaker technology on laptops; audio computer-assisted self-interview options were available. Results: The domains of individualism and family capacities received the highest mean ratings of importance for marking adulthood. Participants rated the acceptance of responsibility for one’s actions and making independent choices as being most important for being considered an adult; other items rated highly were related to emotional control and adopting new family roles. In the domain of peer relationships, participants who had a close friend or romantic partner generally reported high levels of positive qualities in the friendship that were comparable to national samples; however, most individuals had not disclosed their HIV status to their best friend or romantic partner. A number of emerging adults (12.5%) reported having no friends, which is a higher percentage of friendless individuals than national samples. Most emerging adults with HIV reported consumption of fewer fruits and vegetables than national recommendations. In addition, comparable to rates found among adolescents and emerging adults without HIV, participants were engaged in substance use and risky sexual practices such as having multiple sexual partners. Conclusions: There was considerable variability in development among emerging adults. Conceptions of adulthood and peer relationships may be a particularly important aspect of development to examine among emerging adults with HIV. In addition, many of these individuals continue to engage in health risk behaviors that may require intervention efforts geared specifically to their developmental stage. Implications for care providers are discussed.

Shlomo, Gross Mihaela. "I’m OK”: Levels of Communication and Trauma Recovery in Jonathan Safran Foer’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Engelska institutionen, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-113422.

Full text
Abstract:
Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close stands out from the nationalistic-toned American “9/11 novels”. It depicts the story of a young boy and his grandparents who are left with the aftermath of losing a loved one in the attack on the twin towers. However, the complexity of the three main characters and the depth of their individual and common traumas make the novel go beyond the usual nationalistic 9/11 narrative and focus on the personal and, consequently, the national trauma.  This essay analyses the possibility of coping with and recovering from trauma through communication. Dominick LaCapra’s trauma theory notions of “working through” and “acting out”, as well as other traumatic memory research highlight the necessity of utterance in order to overcome trauma and to attempt an existence beyond it. In the instance of the three traumatized characters of the novel, the confessional language is entangled, broken and sometimes muted. This makes the recovery difficult in the case of the grandparents, almost impossible for the character of Grandpa. When it comes to the young boy, Oskar Schell, a more successful communication seems to open up the possibility of mental healing. These personal traumas are a reflection of a broader American trauma where an obsessive “rememoration” of the September 11 events and one-sided, revenge loaded public discourse do not seem to facilitate the national healing process. On all these levels, personal and community, the need and the difficult attempt to communicate the trauma of 9/11 does not necessarily grant recovery from it, but it facilitates a desired “working though” process.

Gourdy, Hélène. "La couverture sur les marchés financiers." Thesis, Paris 2, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA020020.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the financial crisis of 2008, market participants have been seeking to increase the effectiveness of their protection against the specific risks arising from financial transactions to which they are daily exposed. At the same time, the legislator must ensure financial stability. The collateral, unique instrument, designed by financial actors, has been part of these two distinct purposes for some years now. This dual use clouds the concept and raises many questions.Initially conceived as a simple security deposit supplemented by margin calls based on changes in the value of outstanding transactions, collateral has since evolved significantly. Its uses have multiplied, and its boundaries have become uncertain, so much as to appear undefined. Referred to by various names, sometimes mandatory, sometimes optional, and used on regulated markets as well as over-the-counter, collateral now takes such varied forms that it is difficult to grasp its core substance. However, the increased use of this instrument requires that its regime be clarified and the legal uncertainties it produces be removed, given the magnitude of possible financial consequences.By reviewing all the current examples of coverage on the financial markets, this thesis aims to highlight the legal nature of this security interest, in order to shed the necessary light on the conditions for its implementation

Shen, Jun. Thesis, Lyon 3, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012LYO30010.

Full text
Abstract:
The legislations concerning financial markets govern not only the markets, but also the participants, the products and the activities as well in the markets. By using these indispensable legal tools, the legislators of both sides of Atlantic aim at, among others, protecting the investors whose confidence is of top priority to the markets, on the one hand, and reducing the systemic risk which would occur in a more and more globalised financial context, on the other. Indeed, after the global financial crisis of 2008, systemic risk has drawn more legislative attention. From the abovementioned objectives which the legislators would like to achieve, we try to find and analyze the particularity of the legislation concerned, both in France or in the European Union and in the USA, by way of comparison of legislative dispositions or legislative initiatives across the Atlantic, with the consideration about their respective legislative evolution. We also give our reflections on the insufficiencies or the deficiencies with regard to the legislative measures or efforts taken by the transatlantic legislators to realize those objectives. Facing the actual and unprecedented financial crisis, and thus a requirement of dynamic, appropriate, timely and refined legislative reaction, it seems to us that it is the time for legislators in France, in the EU and in the USA to deepen their knowledge about financial products of non-stop innovation, to better adapt their legislative strategies to the development of financial activities and financial entities, to reinforce their cooperation and coordination in depth and in width in the field of financial regulation and supervision, and finally, to better fulfill their pursuing goals

“It is attitude that decide the height, the width, and the depth of one’s achievement. ”When facing the learning attitude of the young learners, pedagogues and parents always expect the students to hold an attitude that makes them do their assigned work properly and desirably. The opportunity of visiting the art museum could be either a cook’s tour or a meaningful trip that enriches both the teacher and the students which, meanwhile, offers an invaluable chance to change student’s attitudes. This course aims at using the resources and materials presented in Taipei Biennial 2010 to create mutual learning and teaching experiences. By experiencing the stimulation of sevens senses, dialogues, reflection, and the process of adoption and accommodation, teachers as well as students can therefore experience the flowing interaction among themselves –which later leads to a spiritual learning journey for both. This course targets on the art learning for senior elementary students, taking Taipei Biennial 2010 as the topic and Doll’s Post-modern Perspective on Curriculum as the teaching paradigm. Through the trip of visiting Taipei Biennial 2010 and the dialogues between the teachers and the students during the interaction, students are therefore able to construct the ability of independent thinking and develop the learning potential to create new values in their lives. After applying Doll’s Post-modern Perspective on Curriculum, I have acquired the following six issues: 1. Listen to the voice from my absorbing mind. 2. Confront with myself honestly in the classroom. 3. Comprehend the situations and needs of students and parents. 4. Examine and surpass my teaching from uncertainity. 5. Close to the inner mind of every child. 6. Become a teacher embracing life, learning and perceiving. Therefore, in my opinions, any teacher who plans to apply Doll’s Post-modern Perspective on Curriculum needs to realize fully: 1. The potentiality of 4R and games and the possibility of the interaction between teachers and students. 2. The variety of teaching, allowing the teaching focus switch between teachers and students. 3. Accept multicultural perspective, enhance the transformation of the curriculum. 4. The difference and distance between teachers and students could be shortened.

Full text
Abstract:
The capacity of the headed studs when they are close to the edge may be limited by the splitting forces in the concrete. In the Eurocode 4 Part 2 Annex C the shear capacity under this particular arrangement of the studs, which is directly dependent on the distance to the edge, is formulated. In addition, the geometrical restrictions to prevent the failure by pull-out of the studs are also given in clause C1 (2). These rules are based on push-out tests for the edge position where tension forces in the lying studs spread over the width of the specimen in this unfavorable way. Nonetheless, the current limits lead to extremely long studs and represent a severe restriction, and on the other hand, it is still an open question whether in real buildings or bridge girders the tension stresses that produce the pull-out appears in the same way as in the push out tests. In this paper the revision of these restrictions is presented together with a research for the alternative use of EN 1992-4 plus RFCS Project INFASO for the verification of the tension loads on the studs.

In 2013 21st International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone21-16454.

Full text
Abstract:
The Daxin Uranium Mine was a small open pit mine with contaminated facilities that included an open pit of 87,620 m2, east waste rock pile of 71,710 m2, west waste rock pile of 57,828 m2, ore transfer station and industrial fields of 9,370 m2, building and structures of 26,600 m2, 246 pieces of equipment, 3000 m of plastic conduit. 2500 m of steel conduit and 1020 m of roads used for transport uranium ores. We present the integrated decommissioning programme utilized to closeout this uranium mine: uranium extraction, slope stabilization, cleanup, backfill, reshaping and covering, re-vegetation, dismantlement and demolishment of facilities, decontamination, re-smelting and wastewater treatment.

Full text
Abstract:
A combined punching and embossing process was developed for fabrication of 3-D multichannel waveguides. The close-die setup overcomes the lateral flow problem experienced by the standard hot embossing process, thereby allowing buildup of embossing pressure and replication of 3-D features. The embossing tool for this purpose includes a punching head and the to-be-replicated features in the socket behind the punching head. During the process, the embossing tool first punches out a billet from a large blank and then embosses this billet in the socket. The combined operation allows for accurate blanking and provides a close-die process for embossing pressure buildup. ABS and PMMA were chosen as two polymers for waveguide embossing. In both cases, cycle times around 7 minutes resulted. While ejection problems were experienced by PMMA, a relatively brittle polymer, 4-channel waveguides with crispy edges and accurate dimensions were successfully fabricated using ABS, the tougher polymer.
