Abstract:
Violent death in postcolonial proseIn the years 1953–1960 Rudolf Dobiáš was imprisoned for his anti-state activities for 7 years, most of which he spent in uranium mines in Jáchymov. Both his non-fiction and prosaic work are based on his personal experience and they also concern the executions of young people. He described in detail the sentencing of three graduates of a grammar school in Trenčín, who were given the death penalty and were executed in February 1951. At the Higher Military Court in Trenčín he discovered the writings of a lieutenant of the Czechoslovak People’s Army, Tomáš Chovan. He was sentenced by the State Court in Bratislava to the death penalty for treason and spying. He was executed in November 1951 at the age of 25. His farewell to his family is presented in the story Younger Brother Mladší brat, which is one of the best works of Dobiáš. Ľuboš Jurík also wrote a biographical novel entitled The Death of a Minister Smrť ministra. It is about the Slovak communist politician Vladimír Clementis 1902–1952, who was the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the years 1948–1950. Clementis was imprisoned in 1951 to face a fabricated accusation. He was given the death penalty too. Jurík’s novel is composed of an interview with a fictive figure — the advocate. Just before the execution, he talks to him about the whole life of the politician Clementis. In the spirit of Stalinism, it was his ex-party colleagues and friends who were behind the execution. Jurík wrote a book about Alexander Dubček as well, entitled A Year Longer Than a Century Rok dlhší ako storočie, in which he asks whether the end of the symbol of Prague Spring was violent or not. There is evidence that it could have been so.

AbstractRR Lyrae stars both in the field and in clusters can be used to derive the metal abundance of the regions and systems where they are found.(1) New data have been collected on a sample of field ab-type RR Lyraes with the aim of studying the composition of the halo and the disk of the galaxy, (Clementini et al. 1992a, in preparation), using the relation found by Clementini et al. (1991), (hereafter CTM91), between [Fe/H] and the equivalent width of the Ca II K-line W‘(K). (2) A quantitative chemical abundance analysis of the ab type RR Lyrae (V29) in the globular cluster M4 has been performed using high resolution, high S/N spectroscopy. We obtain [Fe/H]=–1.3 ± 0.2 and the α– elements (Mg and Ti) are overabundant by 0.6 dex. These results are in good agreement with determinations from high resolution spectra of giants and blue horizontal branch stars (Clementini et al. 1992b, in preparation).

Abstract:
The results of studies on pollen morphology of 6 Malesian <em>Rubus</em> species are presented (<em>R. clementis</em>, <em>R. cordiformis</em>, <em>R. diclinis</em>, <em>R. megacarpus</em>, <em>R. novoguineensis</em> and <em>R. royenii</em> var. ikilimbu). The examination has been made by SEM for the first time and also by LM. Detailed descriptions of the pollen grains are given. The pollen grains are small, isopolar and trizonocolporate. Ornamentation is generally classified as striate, although with some modifications. A striate-reticulate pattern has been observed in only one species (<em>R. cordiformis</em>). A rugulate-striate pattern represents <em>R. novoguineensis</em>. The typical striate patterns differed in form, width and orientation of the muri are observed in <em>R. clementis</em>, <em>R. diclinis</em>, <em>R. megacarpus</em>, <em>R. royenii</em> var. ikilimbu. The tectum perforations are clearly observed in <em>R. clementis</em>, <em>R. diclinis</em>,<em> R. megacarpus</em>, <em>R. royenii</em> var. ikilimbu. The relation between the species has also been disscused. Pollen morphological studies confirmed partly the systematic concept. <em>Rubus megacarpus</em>, <em>R. cordiformis</em>, <em>R. novoguineensis</em> show completely different patterns and can not be regarded as closely related species; <em>Rubus clementis</em> has its own striate pattern, which resembles the pollen morphological type of <em>R. lucens</em> (not included in this study). <em>Rubus diclinis</em> and <em>R. royenii</em> var. ikilimbu have almost the same type of pollen morphology.

Abstract:
Some scholars have recently tried to show that the problems in the Christian community at Corinth were caused in a particular way by women wishing to have a more significant role within the community, and that the primary purpose of Saint Clement’s Letter to the Corinthians was to bring them to order and to show them their proper place in the community’s life and activity. The current study primarily tries to show that Prima Clementis was addressed to the entire Corinthian community. This is followed by an analysis of the passages in which Saint Clement presents the feminine figures of the Old Testament: Miriam (the sister of Moses and Aaron), Lot’s wife, Rahab, Judith, and Esther, and interprets them in the context of the Christian situation at Corinth. In this way, it is shown that Clement, by using the exempla method, creates the image of a perfect, ordered, and harmonious community in which women are outstanding for their strong faith, love, and hospitality.

Abstract:

Ever since an influential study conducted by Pio Franchi de' Cavalieri in the early twentieth century, the Greek Martyrdom of Clement text has been acknowledged as a translation of the original Latin Passio Sancti Clementis text. Yet despite this discovery, very little work has been done to advance the frontier of knowledge on the Latin text itself over the last one hundred years. This work seeks to correct this oversight.

This work revisits the last Latin critical edition of the Passio text published by F. Diekamp in 1913, two years prior to Cavalieri's study. Given Diekamp's preferential treatment to the Greek Martyrdom as the original, this paper collates additional manuscript witnesses against Diekamp's Passio text, offers some conjectural textual emendations, postulates a stemma diagram of the Latin tradition, and provides an English translation to the improved text.

The present work, entitled The Clementis Hat Effect: images of the Italian immigrant subject, has as main objective to consider the memory of the Italian Immigration in the Quarta Colônia through another discursive materiality, the monuments in honor to the immigrants, built from the 50th anniversary of their immigration. Considering these discourses, produced in determined socio-historical moments and in specific production conditions, we view identify possible taking of positions of this subject who sees in/through language, symbolic materiality, pass his question of belonging - or not to a new nation. We part from the metaphor constructed and analyzed by Jean-Jacques Courtine in which Clementis hat refers to memory that can be showed, but can also be erased and still return. In the permanency or not of a memory, power relations are established, ideological issues of the conflicts between symbolic and political, when the iron, wooden and wind languages articulate, acting as invisible barriers in the relation of the subject with the State. Therefore, we propose a sand language in which the memory of immigration remains, though fragmented and dispersed. In this way, through the analysis of the characterized subject position in relation to history and memory - which we denominate Clementis Hat we can identify: the utopia subject position when this subject is moved by the dream of the promised land, that is interrupted because of the immigration conditions; the cleavage subject position, when this subject abdicates their mother tongue and with/because of it, also their history; and the political subject position, where the subject negotiates his place with the State. Our theoretical-analytical movement is the anchor in the Discourse Analysis of French foundation and Brazilian continuity, which has its place in linguistics, historical materialism and psychoanalysis. It is with these fundamentals that we insert ourselves in the linguistic studies, in the line of research Language, Subject and History , where the subject, the discourse and the constitution of meaning is thought.

Abstract:
My research focuses on realising a study on Methodius' archbishopric and on the papal politics of the 9th century concerning central Europe. Besides my work on the sources the huge historiography on this theme which dates from the 19th and the second half of the 20th century, serves as a basis for my analysis. This poses a significant challenge to the project according to the ideological and polemical tendency of a large part of the literature. But of course these extensive results can't be ignored and therefore the adaptation and contextualisation due to modern standards and the critical analysis of the main topics, aims and methodological approaches are an important part of my project. My work examines new prospects in discussing the traditional historiographical problems concerning the foundation of a new ecclesiastical territoriality in central Europe and it concentrates on the recovering of long neglected sources; therefore, the Roman sources (for example the Liber Pontificalis or the pope's registers), the Slavic sources (the Vita Costantini and the Vita Methodi) and the German sources (Annales fuldenses and the Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum) will be subjects of a systematic investigation. The letters of Pope John VIII serve as an important source (872-882), especially the Moravian corpus (seven fragments and four complete letters), which represents a possibility to observe papal politics towards the rising archbishopric of Methodius. The analysis on the Moravian corpus will also be a linguistic one. I will concentrate especially on the vocabulary in the papal letters defining the Methodian archbishopric and its archbishop and the vocabulary used in the correspondence between Pope John VIII and the Slav chief Svatopluk. The linguistic analysis allows to understand the main stages of a dynamical and flexible papal politic: at the beginning of the correspondence the letters are written in a cautious style, reflecting the papal awareness of the alternating historical and territorial circumstances. After Svatopluk's confirmation and an increased political stability in that region, the papal letters became more audacious. Moreover efforts were made towards a justification and legitimation of the new Roman diocese, in order to decrease the influence and the continuous objections of the Bavarian church having had tried to reject papal intrusion over the missionary territories by claiming them to be Bavarian ones assigned by Carolingian authority. The papal letters are precious documents which testify the ideological effort to find an untouchable identity for the Methodian diocese and the right canonical position for Methodius. The first papal attempt consists in assigning Pannonian identity to the Methodian diocese, according to a strategy already adopted during the furious polemic between Rome and Constantinople about the control of Bulgarian Christianity. In the papal letters the term "Pannonian diocese" is suddenly replaced by "Moravian diocese". This seems to be a strategy to establish a new diocese with a new name, that can be regarded independent from the late Roman past. The change of the diocese's name signifies a radical transformation in the papal politics demonstrating an example of effective political sovereignty that reacts to the new political realities along the eastern borders of the Empire. In this context, it's obvious that the relationships between the Pope and the Slavic chiefs, which serve as absolute guarantors for the survival of the new ecclesiastical realities, gain significantly in importance.
