Hasan, Arif. From the Demise of Cosmopolitanism to its Revival. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190656546.003.0010.

Abstract:
This chapter by Arif Hasan offers a nuanced account that predates Partition, and progresses through General Zia-ul Haq’s era of Islamization to the present. The chapter describes a rich public entertainment culture in Karachi that was highly multi-classed, multi-ethnic, and cosmopolitan. Hasan thoroughly debunks any nostalgic distortions that suggest that the city’s golden past was ‘golden’ only for a few elites. Karachi’s good times were available to all, although stratified by class. Whilst the Europeanized classes patronized gymkhanas, clubs and commercial hotels, Karachi’s working, merchant and middle classes frequented their own bars, clubs, and cinemas. Around Saddar, a thoroughly mixed clientele enjoyed music halls, stage shows, food establishments, and discotheques. Hasan points to Karachi’s new emerging liberal performing arts, film and literary culture, and asks if it might assist the development of a more unified, progressive public culture, and a transition from the painful present to a more humane society?

Abstract:
During the eighteenth century an emergent historicism, which differentiated modernity radically from past ages, questioned the traditional notion of a ‘classical tradition’ of timeless values exemplified in Greek and Roman works. Classical antiquity began to be understood as a repository of historical artefacts associated, in part nostalgically, with ‘primitive’ ways of thought. Such recognition of the distance between modernity and antiquity paradoxically encouraged identification with the latter, since antiquarian research permitted increasingly accurate imitation of classical forms in the visual arts from the 1750s, while anthropological reflection on myth stimulated a revival of mythological poetry from the 1810s. Yet British Romantic poetry, whether describing classical artworks or appropriating classical myths, engaged with classical antiquity ambivalently, often ironically. While espousing the Philhellenist cause of Greek independence from Ottoman rule, Byron and Shelley remained very conscious of the disparities between ancient and modern Greece.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the ways in which the British model of subsidizing arts-related activities has encouraged theatres to programme ambitiously and afforded directors the freedom to adopt a fresh, innovative, and often daring approach to their work for the stage. Whilst staging a revival of a Broadway musical classic may seem far from daring, the case studies in this chapter elucidate the ways in which subsidy has allowed directors to address this material in a radical fashion. Exploring two very different theatrical venues reveals methods of programming: whilst the National Theatre chooses to present well-loved golden age Broadway musicals, the Donmar Warehouse focuses on intimate chamber musicals, rarely staged or revived in Britain. This chapter analyses how these musicals have been cast, staged, and received and, in doing so, highlights the manner in which directors have reimagined the Broadway musical for British audiences.

Abstract:
We usually associate the sounds of classic rock ‘n’ roll with youthful rebellion, by juvenile delinquents, student demonstrators, idealistic hippies, or irreverent punks. But an important strain of rock from the late 1960s onward spoke to and for a very different audience: the regular working-class fans who didn’t want to change the world as much as they wanted to protect their place in it. From Creedence Clearwater Revival to Bruce Springsteen, from Lynyrd Skynyrd to AC/DC, and from Judas Priest to Ted Nugent, the music provided the anthems of an increasingly distinct—and increasingly vulnerable—demographic, which has since become a key influence on political culture around the world.

Abstract:
Chapter 7 presents a detailed, empirically based refutation of both the classical Freudian theory and the attempt to recast it as neuropsychoanalysis based on neurological case studies. It presents the evidence that dreams do not have the adaptive function of preserving sleep, as Freudians claim. It further shows that no systematic psychological studies of Freudian claims about the cognitive mechanism that create dreams or about the nature of dream content have been supported. Nor is there any evidence that the Freudian method of free association has any value in understanding the meaning of dreams.
