It cannot stop injustice in the courts based on color and race. Above all, it cannot stop the exploitation of black workers by white capital, especially in the newest South. White North America beyond the urge of sound economics is persistently driving black folk toward socialism. It is the United States which is straining every effort to enslave Asia and Africa, and educated and well-to-do black Americans are coming to know this just as well as anybody. They may delay their reaction; they may hold ominous silence. But in the end, if this pressure keeps up, they will join the march to economic emancipation [the struggle against capitalism], because otherwise they cannot themselves be free.
Despite the gains of the civil rights era, the reemergence of what is now called the "New Jim Crow," based on the mass incarceration and repeated police killings of unarmed black men, shows that the old systems of racial control have been "modernized" in the present, maintaining the color line, if in modified fashion: not only in relation to black Americans—though they have a special position emerging out of the whole legacy of slavery…—but also with respect to all other people of color as well.

Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.

After the attack of September 11, as American journalists never tire of repeating, "everything changed." What has most obviously changed is an awareness of vulnerability. This is not supposed to be the American condition (at least not the middle-class American condition). Vulnerability to attack, like vulnerability to imploding economies, political coups, or widespread hunger, is supposed to be the fate of the world outside our borders, particularly the so-called developing world.

AbstractThis study provides insight into the seasonality of Class I price differentials in the southeastern dairy industry. This is accomplished by analyzing monthly estimates of Class I price differentials obtained from the imputed price solution or dual solution of a generalized capacitated minimum cost network flow model of the dairy industry. A smooth seasonal pattern emerges through the monthly sequence with the lowest and highest estimated Class I price differentials occurring in April and September respectively. Miami and Jacksonville areas reach $ 5.40 and $ 4.36 per hundredweight in April and $ 6.79 and $ 5.53 per hundredweight in September.

Abstract:
AbstractDuring 2017, when the Sun was moving toward the minimum phase of solar cycle 24, an exceptionally eruptive active region (AR) NOAA 12673 emerged on the Sun during August 28-September 10. During the highest activity level, the AR turned into a δ-type sunspot region, which manifests the most complex configuration of magnetic fields from the photosphere to the coronal heights. The AR 12673 produced four X-class and 27 M-class flares, along with numerous C-class flares, making it one of the most powerful ARs of solar cycle 24. Notably, it produced the largest flare of solar cycle 24, namely, the X9.3 event on 2017 September 6. In this work, we highlight the results of our comprehensive analysis involving multi-wavelength imaging and coronal magnetic field modeling to understand the evolution and eruptivity from AR 12673. We especially focus on the morphological, spectral and kinematical evolution of the two X-class flares on 6 September 2017. We explore various large- and small-scale magnetic field structures of the active region which are associated with the triggering and subsequent outbursts during the powerful solar transients.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT A combination of the plant infection-soil dilution technique (most-probable-number [MPN] technique) and immunofluorescence direct count (IFDC) microscopy was used to examine the effects of three winter cover crop treatments on the distribution of a soil population ofRhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii across different size classes of soil aggregates (<0.25, 0.25 to 0.5, 0.5 to 1.0, 1.0 to 2.0, and 2.0 to 5.0 mm). The aggregates were prepared from a Willamette silt loam soil immediately after harvest of broccoli (September 1995) and before planting and after harvest of sweet corn (June and September 1996, respectively). The summer crops were grown in soil that had been either fallowed or planted with a cover crop of red clover (legume) or triticale (cereal) from September to April. The Rhizobiumsoil population was heterogeneously distributed across the different size classes of soil aggregates, and the distribution was influenced by cover crop treatment and sampling time. On both September samplings, the smallest size class of aggregates (<0.25 mm) recovered from the red clover plots carried between 30 and 70% of the total nodulatingR. leguminosarum population, as estimated by the MPN procedure, while the same aggregate size class from the June sampling carried only ∼6% of the population. In June, IDFC microscopy revealed that the 1.0- to 2.0-mm size class of aggregates from the red clover treatment carried a significantly greater population density of the successful nodule-occupying serotype, AR18, than did the aggregate size classes of <0.5 mm, and 2 to 5 mm. In September, however, the population profile of AR18 had shifted such that the density was significantly greater in the 0.25- to 0.5-mm size class than in aggregates of <0.25 mm and >1.0 mm. The populations of two otherRhizobium serotypes (AR6 and AS36) followed the same trends of distribution in the June and September samplings. These data indicate the existence of structural microsites that vary in their suitabilities to support growth and protection of bacteria and that are influenced by the presence and type of plant grown in the soil.

Abstract:
The Thirtieth of September Movement 1965 (G30S 1965), is a movement which is very influential in the history of Indonesian society until today. After G30S 1965, freedom of ideology began to be restricted in Indonesia. In addition, the slaughter of millions of human beings, with the reason to eradicate communism, began to take place after G30S 1965. A restriction on freedom of ideology is also touching the academic life. Based on TAP MPRS No.. XXV/1966, the study of Marxism-Leninism ideology is limited. This resulted in the lack of alternative and scientific thought in the academic world in Indonesia. The Thirtieth of September Movement 1965 (G30S 1965), is the manifestation of class contradictions in the Indonesian capitalist society. G30S 1965, emphasize the class contradictions in Indonesian society. Social classes in Indonesian society is a military bourgeoisie represented by the TNI (Indonesian Armed Forces), the proletariat, as represented by the PKI (Indonesian Communist Party). President Sukarno, was the one who stand in the middle of the contradiction between the army and the PKI. And then, G30S 1965, used as an excuse by Suharto and the army to stage a creeping coup against President Sukarno and slaughtered millions of cadres and sympathizers of the PKI. After the G30S 1965, the New Order regime of Suharto opened the door wide open for international capitalism to exploit the natural resources of Indonesia. Suharto's New Order regime improves Indonesian capitalism.

Abstract:
Background: Obesity, the silent epidemic worldwide has reached a stage where approximately 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700 million adults will be obese by 2015, as projected by WHO. The objective of this study was to find out the incidence of the pregnancy complications due to maternal obesity and to assess the neonatal outcome. Methods: Retrospective study conducted in Cheluvamba Hospital, Mysore from September 2014 to September 2015. Subjects were categorized into 3 classes based on the BMI. Class 1:30-34.9 kg/m2, class 11:35-39.9 kg/m2, Class 111: >40 kg/m2. The maternal and perinatal outcome of the subjects evaluated in relation to body mass index. Results: A total of 56 women were included in the study, with 37 belonging to class I, 13 women class II, 6 women class III. Class III women were significantly more likely to have pre-eclampsia (83.3%, 69.2%, 27%) and post term pregnancy (50%, 38%, 16.2%) than class II and class I. The incidence of GDM (7.6%, 5.4%) and IUGR (7.6%, 2.7%) are more in class II compared to class I. Instrumental deliveries (10%, 28.5%) and LSCS (45.9%, 46.1%, 66.6%) rates increased as the BMI increased from class I to class III. Postpartum complications like PPH (5.4%, 7.6%, 33.3%) and wound gapping (7.6%, 16.6%) were on rise with increased BMI. Class III women were more likely to have macrosomic babies than class II and class III (33.3%, 15.3%, 18.9%).Conclusions: As the BMI increases pregnancy is more likely to get complicated. Interventions directed towards weight loss and prevention of excessive weight gain must begin in the pre-conception period. Obstetrical care providers must counsel their obese patients regarding the risks and complications conferred by obesity and the importance of weight loss.

This paper examines the response of the upper atmosphere to increased radiation following exceptional solar activity in September 2017. The active region of the Sun AR2673 has caused intense solar-terrestrial disturbance. This active region has generated several powerful X-class solar flares. The strongest outburst of the 24th solar activity cycle X9.3 occurred on 6 September 2017. The second powerful solar flare X8.2 occurred on 10 September 2017. Both flares caused an increase of the solar irradiance in extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray spectral regions, and Ly-α line. The empirical FISM2 model was used to obtain data on the radiation fluxes from solar flares. The HAMMONIA chemistry–climate model was used to analyze the effect of radiation on the neutral atmosphere. This work presents the results of the effect of solar flares on the chemical composition and ozone of the upper and middle atmosphere.

Abstract:
Katakunci: Tectona grandis, laju pertumbuhan, riap, Gunungkidul, curah hujan A Study of Teakwood Quality Grown in Community Forests in Gunungkidul, I. Measurement of Growth-RateAbstractGunungkidul regency has a potentiality to be a producer of teak wood as raw materials for industrial purposes. This study aimed to find out the growth-rate and increment levels of teak trees from community forests in Gunungkidul regency and to correlate it with the rainfall factor. Three observed sites were Panggang, Playen and Nglipar. The observation was conducted during 3 years, i.e. 1st period (October 2009-September 2010), 2nd period (October 2010-September 2011), and 3rd period (October 2011-September 2012). The measurements of diameter were performed on trees in 3 diameter classes (high, middle, small) every in the end of the month by 5 replications of each class. The results were the highest average of diameter increment were 2.21 + 0.52 cm/year observed in Panggang for high diameter class as the lowest level was 0.33 + 0.19 cm/year observed in Nglipar for small diameter class. High diameter class showed the highest increment values. Most of the growth-rate levels of 1st period were the highest in every sites and diameter classes. Generally, the measurement of monthly increment showed the minimum or minus growth between May and September, the highest increment peaks were measured during November – February. Pearson’s correlation for all the data between the rates of increment and rainfall (r = 0.24) or rainy day (r = 0.28) were significant. Data correlation on the basis of gowth-sites showed the highest degree which were observed in Playen, especially in the 2nd period. The weak correlation generally indicates the other factors should be considered to discover the trend of the growth of teak trees in the community forests of Gunungkidul regency.

Abstract:
The paper investigates the structural behaviour of a class of cable-and-strut prestressed tensegrity domes which have been proposed by D.H. Geiger. The largest existing dome of this type, completed in September 1989, has circular plan and diameter of 210 m. The investigation concentrates on a cut-down version of this dome, consisting of only twentyfour cable segments and eight struts, with one statical indeterminacy (as in the bigger domes) and thirteen independent inextensional modes of deformation. It is shown that the state of self-stress associated with the statical redundancy stiffens all of the inextensional modes. The response of the domes to a general load condition is discussed: the inextensional loads, which can induce large displacements from the initial configuration, are identified and contrasted to the extensional loads, which induce mainly tension changes and comparatively small displacements. For a particular extensional load, a simple stability analysis shows that overall buckling of the dome and slackening of some cables occur at approximately the same value of the load but, if the same loads are applied in the opposite direction, overall buckling precedes cable slackening. An experiment on a 1.7m prestressed dome is described. The measured response is compared to analytical predictions based on the nominal shape of the dome, as well as on its actual shape — which was carefully measured.

Abstract:
Background: The aim of this study is to report the short-term results of catheter-directed foam sclerotherapy (CDFS) in the treatment of axial saphenous vein incompetence. Patients and methods: Data of all patients undergoing CDFS for symptomatic primary incompetence of the great or small saphenous vein were prospectively collected. Treatment results in terms of occlusion rate and patients’ grade of satisfaction were analysed. All successfully treated patients underwent clinical and duplex follow-up examinations one year postoperatively. Results: Between September 2006 and September 2010, 357 limbs (337 patients) were treated with CDFS at our institution. Based on the CEAP classification, 64 were allocated to clinical class C3 , 128 to class C4, 102 to class C5 and 63 to class C6. Of the 188 patients who completed the one year follow up examination, 67 % had a complete and 14 % a near complete obliteration of the treated vessel. An ulcer-healing rate of 54 % was detected. 92 % of the patients were satisfied with the results of treatment. We registered six cases of thrombophlebitis and two cases of venous thromboembolism, all requiring treatment. Conclusions: The short-term results of CDFS in patients with axial vein incompetence are acceptable in terms of occlusion and complications rates.

AbstractThe so-called Carrington Event on September 1, 1859, is clearly the solar outburst that brought the realization to the inhabitants of Earth that weather existed in space, and that space weather was important to the rapidly developing technological infrastructure on Earth. It is important to understand not only how space weather affects our technological systems, but like the case of atmospheric weather, the possible intensity of such weather, the frequency of extreme events, and how to predict them. This paper reviews what we know about one class of extreme space weather events, the superfast arrival events, how best to compare them given our limited diagnostics in past events and even at the current time, and suggests a direction for progress in this field.

Abstract:
Abstract The Carrington flare in 1859 September is a benchmark, as the earliest reported solar flare and as an event with one of the greatest terrestrial impacts. To date, no rigorous estimate of the energy of this flare has been made on the basis of the only direct observation available, its white-light emission. Here, we exploit the historical observations to obtain a magnitude estimate and express it in terms of its GOES soft X-ray class. From Carrington’s original drawings, we estimated the area of the white-light flaring region to be 116 ± 25 msh. Carrington’s account allows us to estimate the flare blackbody brightness temperature as ≈8800–10,900 K, given the most plausible interpretation of the reported flare brightness. This leads to an unprecedented class estimate of ≈X80 (X46–X126), on the modern revised GOES scale (a factor 1.43 higher than the traditional one). This substantially exceeds earlier estimates but is based on an explicit interpretation of Carrington’s description. We also describe an alternative but less plausible estimation of the flare brightness, as adopted previously, to obtain a class estimate of ≈X14 (X9–X19). This now-deprecated scenario gives an estimate similar to that of with those of directly observed modern great flares. Approximations with “equivalent area,” based on the Hinode observations, lead to comparable magnitudes and approve our estimates, though with a larger uncertainty range. We note that our preferred estimate is higher than the currently used value of X64.4 ± 7.2 (revised) based on indirect geomagnetic measurements.

Abstract:
We have studied the quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) of the M2.3 flare that occurred in the active region NOAA 12172 on 23 September 2014. Through the fast Fourier transform (FFT) method, we decompose the flare light curves into fast- and slowly-varying components, and the cut-off threshold is 100 s. We find that the QPPs have a period of 40 s at soft X-ray (SXR), hard X-ray (HXR), radio and ultraviolet (UV). Based on the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), we find that the QPPs take place at the same time interval as the flare ribbon separation, and that the QPPs seem to originate from the flare ribbons. Our observations tend to support the mechanism of the periodic nonthermal electron injection during the flare eruption.

In September 2017, the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance, and the National Development and Reform Commission jointly announced the first batch of “double first-class” construction universities, aiming to improve China’s education level and strengthen the country’s core competitiveness. In addition to first-class teaching and first-class scientific research, first-class universities should also have first-class campuses. The campus of a first-class university should have a complete range of infrastructure, scale, and function to meet the requirements of school-running and scientific research; it should also advocate sustainable development, which includes the concept of energy-saving, smart, and green. The traditional production methods and management models of the construction industry are far from being able to meet the needs of the construction and development of first-class campuses. Digital, intelligent, and informatized construction models are the only way for current campus construction.

Abstract:
In the first part of the twentieth century, Hungary produced an unusually large number of world-class mathematicians. They included, most notably, L. Fejér, A. Haar, F. and M. Riesz, J. von Neumann, G. Pólya, G. SzegÕ , P. Turán and perhaps, above all, the subject of this memoir, Pál (Paul) ErdÕs. As Ernst Straus put it, ErdÕs was ‘the crown prince of problem solvers and the undisputed monarch of problem posers’. ErdÕs was born in Hungary but left his native land when he was 21; from then on he lived in England, the USA, Canada, Israel and many other countries but frequently visited Hungary and had many Hungarian friends. Although he never had a ‘proper’ academic job, through his prodigious output, his host of co-authors, his constant travels and his amazing body of unsolved problems, he has greatly influenced mathematics today. He proved fundamental results in number theory, combinatorics, probability and approximation theory, as well as in set theory, elementary geometry and topology, and real and complex analysis. He was instrumental in the birth of probabilistic number theory and was the main advocate of the use of probabilistic methods in mathematics in general. He was also one of the originators of modern graph theory. He had an exceptional ability for joint work and many of his best results were obtained in collaboration; he wrote altogether about 1500 papers, perhaps five times as many as other prolific mathematicians, and he had about 500 collaborators.

Abstract:
Background Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) seroprevalence studies bridge the gap left from case detection, to estimate the true burden of the COVID-19 pandemic. While multiple anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoassays are available, no gold standard exists. Methods This serial cross-sectional study was conducted using plasma samples from 8999 healthy blood donors between April-September 2020. Each sample was tested by four assays: Abbott SARS-Cov-2 IgG assay, targeting nucleocapsid (Abbott-NP) and three in-house IgG ELISA assays (targeting spike glycoprotein, receptor binding domain, and nucleocapsid). Seroprevalence rates were compared using multiple composite reference standards and by a series of Bayesian Latent Class Models. Result We found 13 unique diagnostic phenotypes; only 32 samples (0.4%) were positive by all assays. None of the individual assays resulted in seroprevalence increasing monotonically over time. In contrast, by using the results from all assays, the Bayesian Latent Class Model with informative priors predicted seroprevalence increased from 0.7% (95% credible interval (95% CrI); 0.4, 1.0%) in April/May to 0.7% (95% CrI 0.5, 1.1%) in June/July to 0.9% (95% CrI 0.5, 1.3) in August/September. Assay characteristics varied over time. Overall Spike had the highest sensitivity (93.5% (95% CrI 88.7, 97.3%), while the sensitivity of the Abbott-NP assay waned from 77.3% (95% CrI 58.7, 92.5%) in April/May to 64.4% (95% CrI 45.6, 83.0) by August/September. Discussion Our results confirmed very low seroprevalence after the first wave in Canada. Given the dynamic nature of this pandemic, Bayesian Latent Class Models can be used to correct for imperfect test characteristics and waning IgG antibody signals.

Abstract:
The research on implementation of learning strategy to Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Record, Review (SQ4R) has been done to improve student achievement on the subject of Atomic Structures in class X MIA SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru on Agustus until September 2018. Form of the research is experimental research with pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of two classes, class X MIA 2 as the experiment and class X MIA 3 as control class which randomly selected after had tested normality and homogeneity. Experimental class is a class that implemented Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Record, Review (SQ4R) strategy. Data analysis technique used the t-test. Based on the result of the final data processing t-test formula obtained tcount>ttable (1,86>1,67) means the application of Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Record, Review (SQ4R) strategy can improve student achievement on the subject of atomic structures in class X MIA SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru.

Abstract:
Objective: The objective of this study was to conduct latent class analysis (LCA) of ADHD symptoms to characterize the underlying structure of ADHD. Method: Participants were recruited from September 2012 to January 2015 from the Department of Psychiatry of Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. Diagnoses of ADHD and comorbid psychiatric disorders were confirmed with the Kiddie–Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia–Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL). We performed LCA of ADHD symptoms in those who had ( n = 141, age = 8.1 ± 2.3 years, 106 boys) and did not have ( n = 82, age = 9.1 ± 2.5 years, 40 boys) ADHD. Results: A three-class solution was found to be the best model, revealing classes of children with mostly combined and hyperactive/impulsive subtypes of ADHD (Class 1), non-ADHD (Class 2), and inattentive subtype of ADHD (Class 3). Conclusion: The three-class solution with LCA supports a two-factor two-class structure of ADHD symptoms.

Abstract:
Walter Thompson Welford (Walter Weinstein until 1957), born in London, left Hackney Technical Institute at the age of 16 years to become a technician at the London Hospital and later at Oxford University Biochemistry Department. In 1942, after obtaining a first–class honours external degree in mathematics from London University by private study, he returned to London to work at Adam Hilger Ltd. He moved to Imperial College, London, as a research assistant in 1947, became a lecturer in 1951, a senior lecturer in 1959, Reader in 1964 and Professor of Physics in 1973. He was elected a Fellow of The Royal Society in 1980. After formal retirement in 1983 he continued to be research active at Imperial College and the University of Chicago until his death from throat cancer in 1990.Walter's scientific work was in the craft of optical instrumentation, in which he became an internationally recognized master. His contributions ranged from basic aberration theory to the design, construction and testing of a vast range of optical instrumentation. His research fields were principally lens aberrations, optical microscopy, bubble chamber optics, laser speckle, non–imaging optics, diffraction gratings and diffractive lenses. Many will also remember him as a kindly and inspiring educator.

Abstract:
Michael Elliott was the leader of work at Rothamsted that invented and subsequently commercially developed the pyrethroids, a new class of insecticides. Michael made probably the greatest individual contribution to the control of insect pests that not only constrain global food production but also affect the health of ourselves and our livestock. In one of the first pioneering structure–activity relationship studies, Michael led the multidisciplinary team that invented the major pyrethroid insecticides bioresmethrin, permethrin, cypermethrin and deltamethrin. In the 1980s these represented two-thirds of the global pyrethroid market; at that time pyrethroids captured more than 25% of the total insecticide market and were used on 33 million hectares of crops (Wirtz et al . 2009). In 2002 deltamethrin was the world's largest-selling pyrethroid, with annual sales worth $208 million (information from Cropnosis Ltd). In terms of human health, in 2009 it was estimated that pyrethroid-treated bednets significantly decreased the number of deaths due to malaria among children under five years of age by about one-fifth as well as reducing all incidents of malaria, and in 2011 the World Health Organization recommended its vastly expanded use.
