As W.E.B. Du Bois wrote some sixty years ago in "<a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.14452/MR-004-12-1953-04_4" target="_blank">Negroes and the Crisis of Capitalism in the United States</a>" (<em>Monthly Review</em>, April 1953; reprinted in <a href="http://archive.monthlyreview.org/index.php/mr/article/view/MR-054-11-2003-04_3" target="_blank">April 2003</a>),<div class="blockquote">The United States, with its existing social structure, cannot abolish the color line despite its promises. It cannot stop injustice in the courts based on color and race. Above all, it cannot stop the exploitation of black workers by white capital, especially in the newest South. White North America beyond the urge of sound economics is persistently driving black folk toward socialism. It is the United States which is straining every effort to enslave Asia and Africa, and educated and well-to-do black Americans are coming to know this just as well as anybody. They may delay their reaction; they may hold ominous silence. But in the end, if this pressure keeps up, they will join the march to economic emancipation [the struggle against capitalism], because otherwise they cannot themselves be free.</div>Despite the gains of the civil rights era, the reemergence of what is now called the "New Jim Crow," based on the mass incarceration and repeated police killings of unarmed black men, shows that the old systems of racial control have been "modernized" in the present, maintaining the color line, if in modified fashion: not only in relation to black Americans&mdash;though they have a special position emerging out of the whole legacy of slavery&hellip;&mdash;but also with respect to all other people of color as well.<p class="mrlink"><p class="mrpurchaselink"><a href="http://monthlyreview.org/index/volume-67-number-4" title="Vol. 67, No. 4: September 2015" target="_self">Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the <em>Monthly Review</em> website.</a></p>

Abstract:
After the attack of September 11, as American journalists never tire of repeating, "everything changed." What has most obviously changed is an awareness of vulnerability. This is not supposed to be the American condition (at least not the middle-class American condition). Vulnerability to attack, like vulnerability to imploding economies, political coups, or widespread hunger, is supposed to be the fate of the world outside our borders, particularly the so-called developing world.

AbstractThis study provides insight into the seasonality of Class I price differentials in the southeastern dairy industry. This is accomplished by analyzing monthly estimates of Class I price differentials obtained from the imputed price solution or dual solution of a generalized capacitated minimum cost network flow model of the dairy industry. A smooth seasonal pattern emerges through the monthly sequence with the lowest and highest estimated Class I price differentials occurring in April and September respectively. Miami and Jacksonville areas reach $ 5.40 and $ 4.36 per hundredweight in April and $ 6.79 and $ 5.53 per hundredweight in September.

Arti, Sulaiman. "Continuity and change in Hollywood representations of the Middle East after September 11th." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2009. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/16858.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis inquires into the factors behind Hollywood's depiction of the Middle East. That depiction is not static, but is modified in response to changes in political events and US government foreign policy. Although the events of 9/11 seemed to justify the traditional negative stereotype of Arabs, the image has been partially and rationally re-interpreted. This was due to the rise in prominence of the ideas of a minority of radical and free-thinking members of the Hollywood community who embraced a more intellectual approach, which advocated that the popular Western view of the Arab world was unjustified and based on a fallacious fabrication for Western political advantage. The research further shows that these activists did not owe allegiance to the Hollywood-US government propaganda machine. They were able to fracture this traditional alliance and provide the opportunity for the appearance of films of a radical nature, which were critical of US Middle Eastern policy and projected the Arab world in a new light. The study analyzes a selection of films that represent the Middle East in terms of their philosophy and cinematic structure, which enables them to act as vectors to raise public awareness of the issues and to promote reconciliation and co-existence between East and West.

Abstract:
AbstractNon-solar research at the Radiophysics Laboratory (RP) was launched in September 1946 when Joe Pawsey (1908–1962) tried unsuccessfully to observe the enigmatic ‘radio star’ in Cygnus that the British team of Stanley Hey (1909–2000, Fig. 4.1), John Parsons and James Phillips (1946) had announced in the 17 August issue of Nature. Two months later, John Bolton (1922–1993; Fig. 4.2) and research assistant Bruce Slee (1924–2016) were at Dover Heights trying to observe the Sun at 60 MHz. When it insisted on remaining inactive they decided to use their 2-Yagi antenna in sea interferometer mode to search for radio emission from other types of objects. Neither had a background in astronomy, and their astronomical knowledge and resources were virtually non-existent. Bolton (1982: 349) later described how they used the Russell, Duggan and Stewart book Astronomy to “… hazard guesses as to which types of objects might emit copious amounts of radio emission …” and Norton’s Star Atlas “… to find the position of the brightest candidate in each class.”

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractThe Blue Wave is a locking structure that allows simultaneous navigation in both directions of navigation, without stopping in most cases, and at a speed depending on the local topography. Its principle has been described in an issue of PIANC Bulletin, N°108, september 2001.It could be used, in lieu of a set of locks, on a Canal which is presently being improved to CEMT Class Va, far upstream from Paris, the Canal from Villiers to Beaulieu (Petite Seine, France). It is possible to form 10 reaches of 1,000 m each, separated by doors (mitre or valve). The depth available in the existing borrow pits is sufficient for the navigation of the project boats, which have 31.9 m2 of wetted section.By using the existing pits, which were dug in advance for improvement of this waterway, the structure very faithfully respects the current levels of these bodies of water, which avoids costly measures to restore the water table. In addition, the 2 upstream gates being non-overtopping, the non-overtopping dykes only total 2 km, instead of 16 km in the lock option. These two points confirm that the proposed solution is more respectful of the environment and landscapes than the lock option. Thus, since the set speed of the concept is practically the optimum speed permitted by the cross-section of the canal, it can be said that the site of the Canal from Villiers to Beaulieu is optimal for the application of the Blue Wave principle.

Abstract:
Abstract The class of ‘65 experienced campus life in a radically different way. Transforming events took place during their school days. There was still time to join fraternities, to “twist and shout,” to wear madras shirts, Villager dresses, and Bass Weejun shoes; still time to sweat through hot September football games and take your girl to the drive-in theater, where an unlucky fellow might see My Fair Lady in its entirety without distraction. But slow-dancing to “Moon River” or whiling away time at Pug ‘s were happy hours enacted against a backdrop of profound change; change with which each student in the class of ‘65 would have to come to terms.

Abstract:
The Dry Low NOx (DLN) - 2.6 combustion system has achieved emission rates of lower than 9 ppm NOx (dry, corrected to 15 percent O2) and CO from 50 to 100 percent load for the GE MS7001FA industrial gas turbine on natural gas. The system uses lean premixed combustion with fuel staging for low load stability. The first unit achieved commercial operation in March of 1996 with a firing temperature of 2350 F. As of September 9, 1999, it has accumulated over 11,800 hours of operation in peaking and base load service. Sixteen more units have since entered commercial service. Emissions data are shown for operation on natural gas. The DLN-2.6 system can operate on liquid fuel with water injection for NOx abatement. Power augmentation with steam injection is allowable while operating on natural gas. The premixed gas nozzles utilize swirl for flame stabilization. Aerodynamically shaped natural gas injectors are applied for flashback or flame-holding resistance.

Abstract:
In Quebec, children must be 5 years old before October1st to be admitted to kindergarten. In the same class, the youngest students are therefore up to one year younger than the oldest. In this study, the authors show that children born in September have 35% higher rates of ADHD diagnosis and medication than those born in October. ADHD could be confused with inattentive or more turbulent behaviors. Based on unpublished data from the RAMQ, including the medical services records of nearly 800,000 young people born between 1996 and 2005, the authors draw unequivocal conclusions about the extent of the phenomenon and sound the alarm on an issue of great concern.
