Abstract:
Addressing anti-social behaviour (ASB) has been a major policy priority of New Labour since it came to power in 1997. This is reflected in a series of legislative powers enabling a range of agencies to take legal action to tackle ASB (e.g. Crime and Disorder Act 1998; Police Reform Act 2002; Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003; Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005) and in a number of national policy initiatives (e.g. the Home Office ‘Together’ Campaign, 2003; the Respect Action Plan, 2006; the Youth Task Force Action Plan, 2007). These developments are the subject of a growing body of academic analysis and critique, much of which has focused on the use of the ASB powers in the regulation of particular neighbourhoods and communities, especially social housing areas of predominantly White working-class residents (Burney, 2005; Flint, 2006), and of young people, again mostly White and working class (Squires and Stephen, 2005). Specific service or practice developments arising out of ASB policy have also been analysed, for example, Family Intervention Projects (Nixon et al., 2006, 2008), Anti-Social Behaviour Teams (Prior et al., 2006), and the use of ASBOs (Squires, 2006; Matthews et al., 2007) and Dispersal Orders (Crawford and Lister, 2007).

Being able to select, use, and interpret measures of center is expected of all secondary students (NCTM 2000, 2006). Discussing average class size can be a motivational vehicle for exploring this topic because students (and teachers) at all grade levels notice when they have significantly bigger classes and high school juniors and seniors see average class size touted in the publicity brochures they receive from colleges. Also, educators, administrators, policy makers, and parents are concerned about the impact class size may have on student achievement and equity (e.g., Finn, Gerber, and Boyd-Zaharias 2005; Nye, Hedges, and Konstantopoulos 2004; Pong and Pallas 2001). Finally, using situations that readily yield results that students initially find counterintuitive can be motivating (Lesser 1998).

Abstract:
Background This study aimed to examine the evolution of genotypic drug resistance prevalence in treatment-failing patients in the multicentre, Italian, Antiretroviral Resistance Cohort Analysis (ARCA). Methods Patients with a drug resistance genotype test performed between 1999 and 2006 at failure of a combination antiretroviral therapy and with complete treatment history were selected. The prevalence of resistance was measured overall, per calendar year, per drug class and per treatment line at failure. Results The overall resistance prevalence was 81%. Resistance to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) declined after 2002 (68% in 2006; χ2 for trend P=0.004); resistance to non-NRTIs (NNRTIs) stabilized after 2004; and resistance to protease inhibitors (PIs) declined after 2001 (43% in 2006; P=0.004). In first-line failures, NRTI resistance decreased after 2002 ( P=0.006), NNRTI resistance decreased after 2003 ( P=0.001) and PI resistance decreased after 2001 ( P<0.001). Independent predictors of resistance to any class were HIV type-1 transmission by heterosexual contacts as compared with injecting drug use, a higher number of experienced regimens, prior history of suboptimal therapy, higher viral load and CD4+ T-cell counts, more recent calendar year and viral subtype B carriage, whereas the use of PI-based versus NNRTI-based regimens at failure was associated with a reduced risk of resistance. There was an increase of type-1 thymidine analogue and of protease mutations L33F, I47A/V, I50V and I54L/M, whereas L90M decreased over calendar years. Conclusions During more recent years, emerging drug resistance has decreased, particularly in first-line failures. The prevalence continues to be high in multiregimen-failing patients.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article consists of an ethnographically informed analysis of the ‘logic’ guiding civil society activism in Nepal at three distinct points in its recent history. The paper details these ‘logics’ (‘service logic’ (1990 2000), a ‘peace logic’ (2001-2004) and a more radical and egalitarian logic (2005-2006)) and then relates the corresponding types of civil society (civil society I, civil society II and civil society III, respectively) to broader political developments in the country. It is argued that the changes in the logic underpinning civil society activism can clearly be attributed to the changing patterns of macro power configurations and to distinct challenges faced by the urban literate class over the previous two decades.

Abstract:
Background. Much of the literature on obesity has consistently documented the unprecedented rise in body weight over the past 2 decades. Less attention is paid to future projections of the population distribution of body mass index (BMI). Objective. To forecast the distribution of BMI in children (6—17 years) and adults (>17 years) in the United States (US) by age group, sex, and race over the period 2004—2014. Methods. Analysis of Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data (2001—2002 and 2004— 2005) to estimate and compare the 1-year transitions across BMI categories for children and adults. Forecasting distributions of obesity over 2004—2014 using a probabilistic population-level simulation model and validating it with prevalence data from 2005—2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Results. During 2004— 2005, a majority of adults in each BMI category remained in the same category after 1 year, these estimates being not significantly different than the corresponding estimates in 2001—2002. Among children, stabilities within BMI categories are low during 2004—2005, and compared with 2001—2002, transition probabilities into overweight class 2 from other BMI categories increase substantially. Forecasts reveal significant increases in the risk of overweight category among children 6 to 9 years old (5% to 14% in 5 years), with a greater increase anticipated in males, and increases in the overweight category for many years to come for adults, although the adult obesity prevalence remains at the current levels. Conclusions. Although the absolute levels of obesity remain high among US adults, the growth in obesity appears to have stagnated. On the contrary, continued growth in the prevalence of the highest BMI category for children is anticipated.

Abstract:
Existing analytical frameworks for the study of Israel’s political sociology and political economy tend to view the Israeli society as polarized into a neo-liberal secular and peace-seeking elite and religious ethno-republican social groups. The turn to ethno-republicanism following the outbreak of the Second Intifada in 2000, and two neo-liberal economic programs in 2002 and 2003, exposed the limitations of those approaches. We suggest that a Neo-Gramscian approach provides a better theoretical framework for the analysis of the early years of the twenty-first century. We argue that during the years 2001–2006 a hegemonic project was constituted which succeeded in combining neo-liberal and ethno-republican elements. This project was based on a relatively stable socio-political alignment of social groups, primarily drawn from the Jewish middle class. In order to establish our argument, we characterize the project and analyze the position of the main social groups in Israeli society relative to it.

Mittal and Rhoades (1999–2001) and Mittal et al. (2006) have initiated the studies of error estimatesEn(f)through trigonometric Fourier approximations (TFA) for the situations in which the summability matrixTdoes not have monotone rows. In this paper, we determine the degree of approximation of a functionf˜, conjugate to a periodic functionfbelonging to the weightedW(Lp,ξ(t))-class(p≥1), whereξ(t)is nonnegative and increasing function oftby matrix operatorsT(without monotone rows) on a conjugate series of Fourier series associated withf. Our theorem extends a recent result of Mittal et al. (2005) and a theorem of Lal and Nigam (2001) on general matrix summability. ABSTRACT In this paper, we aim to shed light on the theoretical-analytical contributions obtained from the articulation of the dialogical perspective of language (BAKHTIN, 2000) and its performative view (BUTLER, 2003; BAUMAN; BRIGGS, 2008). The investigation is informed by a socioconstructionist epistemology of discourse and social identities (MOITA LOPES; 2006), and guided by the applied studies of language in situated contexts (RAMPTON, 2006) with a view to establishing a dialogue between local interaction and translocal/transhistorical dimensions. We begin by problematising the constructs of language, subject, reality and knowledge, key to any politically engaged research aimed at inventing alternatives for issues of contemporary life. We then present an analysis of the corporeal-discursive identitary performance of a teacher giving her demonstration class in a public selection as a way of illustrating our theoretical framework.

Abstract:
Restoring fish populations in regulated rivers requires an understanding of relationships between hydrology and population dynamics. In the present study, spawning and recruitment of golden perch, Macquaria ambigua ambigua, were investigated in relation to flow in the regulated lower River Murray. All life stages were sampled in three successive years, with peak flows of 8500 (2004–05), 15 000 (2005–06) and 7000 ML day–1 (2006–07). Larvae occurred only in November/December 2005, and young-of-year fish only in early 2006. Counts of daily increments in otolith microstructure indicated spawning in late October/early November 2005. Back-calculated birth years for adults, derived from otoliths and compared with the hydrograph for the preceding 25 years, revealed the dominance of three year classes spawned in association with increased discharge in 2000, 1998 and 1996. In 2007, an additional year class of 1-year-old fish appeared, following spawning in 2005. In each case, strong recruitment followed spring–summer spawning, when peak flows were >14 000 ML day–1 and water temperatures would have exceeded 20°C. Restoration of within-channel flows of 15–25 000 ML day–1 from late spring through summer would promote spawning and recruitment and improve the resilience of golden perch populations in the lower Murray.

Abstract:
Many English language teachers at the secondary and tertiary levels in Japan recognize that making their lessons applicable to the lives of their students, personalizing their English lessons, is of utmost importance for motivation reasons. They also often see the beneficial, sometimes miraculous, results of students participating in speech contests (King, 2002; Nunn and Nunn, 2005; Bradley, 2006; Bury, Sellick, and Yamamoto, 2012) but are concerned about the negative characteristics such as the feelings of rejection when students do not win. This paper describes a curricular solution to the problem of providing all students, not just a few chosen ones, a speech-giving opportunity without the “agony of defeat.” An additional problem is overcoming the anxiety factor of speaking in front of an audience (Doyon, 2000). The solution is to incorporate speech-giving in English conversation or oral communication classes, first to small groups, and gradually to large audiences, in an activity called My Monologue. This paper describes such a program by giving detailed descriptions of how to teach and organize this speech giving activity on personal topics, also describing variations on the activity, an evaluation rubric, and an evaluation procedure.

Abstract:
This research was about Marxism in Jack the Giant Slayer on social class and kind of Marxism. Marxism was an important thing in the society because Marxism wanted to remove social classes. Thus, this research was to describe how social classes could influence someone’s roles in the society. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The research was conducted by accommodating two theories: kinds of Marxism by Tyson (2006) and social class by Barry (2002). Tyson’s theory (2006) classifies Marxism into classism, patriotism, religion, rugged individualism, and consumerism. On the other hand, Barry’s theory (2002) classifies social class into the upper class, the middle class, and the lower class. The findings of the analysis reveal that there were ten data in Jack the Giant Slayer. The researcher found ten forms of Marxism, There were one form of classism, twelve forms of rugged individualism, and one form of consumerism. The most of kind dominant Marxism was classism. Besides, the researcher found three forms of social class, they were the upper class, the middle class, and the lower class. There were four characters of the upper class, one character of the middle class, and two characters of the lower class. The dominant social class was the upper class, which appeared in four characters.

Abstract:
Abstract The question of the HLA complementarity between unrelated Donors Registries and Cord Blood banks is often raised. On december 31th 2006, three methods were used to qualify and quantify the genetic diversity and complementarity between French marrow unrelated donors (FMUD) and French cryopreserved cord blood units (FCBU). The first one is based on HLA haplotype frequencies performed according to the EM algorithm method, the second on the contribution in new phenotypes (CinNP), the third on the presence of no, one or two frequent haplotypes within MUD/CBU phenotypes. Preliminary operations on HLA typings were necessary to homogenize data: split level, exclusion of only typed at class I level donors. HLA haplotype frequencies comparison does not lead to a global significant difference between FMUD and FCBU. The 5 most frequent haplotypes are identical in both populations: 01-08-17, 29-44-07, 03-07-15, 02-44-04, 02-07-15. Then some haplotypes, characteristic of either Nord or South of Europe, were more frequent among the FMUD than among the FCBU: 02-44-07, 02-51-13, 11-35-01, 02-60-13. On the contrary, some haplotypes of Middle East and Eastern Europe were more frequent among the FCBU than among the FMUD: 30-18-17, 24-35-11, 02-13-07, 33-65-01. In 2006 CinNP does not differ significantly between FMUD and FCBU. 49% of new MUD/CBU bring new HLA-ABDR low resolution split level phenotypes to the FMUD and FCBU populations present the year before, with differences between regions: Martinique and Reunion islands have the largest CinNP, Britanny the smallest. Effectiveness in term of CinNP have been studied for France during the past 6 years, by 2 year sections: 2001–2002, 2003–2004, 2005–2006. As expected, in order to reach an equivalent rate of CinNP, a growing number of donors must be registered every year. The 25 most frequent haplotypes among the FMUD and FCBU were calculated, and called “frequent haplotypes” (FH) among the French population. We could then categorize individuals according to the number of FH they had: none, one or two. 85% of harvested FMUD for a national patient between 2000 and 2006 had one or two FH versus 54% of infused FCBU. 50% of harvested FMUD/ infused FCBU for an international patient had no FH, versus 26% for a national patient. FMUD registry and FCBU banks are complementary: they answer to various HLA haplotypes needs for national and international patients. Incontestably, international patients benefit from French MUD/CBU, which present HLA characteristics not or under-represented in their Registry of origin.

Abstract:
Abstract. Glaciers in the Canadian Rocky Mountains constitute an important freshwater resource. To enhance our understanding of the influence climate and local topography have on glacier area, large numbers of glaciers of different sizes and attributes need to be monitored over periods of many decades. We used Interprovincial Boundary Commission Survey (IBCS) maps of the Alberta–British Columbia (BC) border (1903–1924), BC Terrain Resource Information Management (TRIM) data (1982–1987), and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) imagery (2000–2002 and 2006) to document planimetric changes in glacier cover in the central and southern Canadian Rocky Mountains between 1919 and 2006. Over this period, glacier cover in the study area decreased by 590 ± 70 km2 (40 ± 5%), 17 of 523 glaciers disappeared and 124 glaciers fragmented into multiple ice masses. Glaciers smaller than 1.0 km2 experienced the greatest relative area loss (64 ± 8%), and relative area loss is more variable with small glaciers, suggesting that the local topographic setting controls the response of these glaciers to climate change. Small glaciers with low slopes, low mean/median elevations, south to west aspects, and high insolation experienced the largest reduction in area. Similar rates of area change characterize the periods 1919–1985 and 1985–2001; −6.3 ± 0.6 km2 yr−1 (−0.4 ± 0.1% yr−1) and −5.0 ± 0.5 km2 yr−1 (−0.5 ± 0.1% yr−1), respectively. The rate of area loss, however, increased over the period 2001–2006; −19.3 ± 2.4 km2 yr−1 (−2.0 ± 0.2% yr−1). Applying size class-specific scaling factors, we estimate a total reduction in glacier cover in the central and southern Canadian Rocky Mountains for the period 1919–2006 of 750 km2 (30%).

The influence of social class on the decisions of Mexican voters is, according to recent literature, modest and irrelevant. In this paper I reassess the role of class in the presidential elections of 2000 and 2006. After discussing how social class should be conceptualized and measured in election surveys, I analyze exit poll data from these two elections. The results show that class is a potent force in Mexican elections and that the middle class, in particular, has played a critical role in the transformation of Mexican politics.

Abstract:
Many education scholars consider motricity aggregating and inclusive (Bertagna, 2005; Block & Vogler, 1994; Goodwin & Watkinson, 2000; Moliterni, 2013). It helps all students to develop specific motor and relational skills and non-special-needs students to manage special needs effectively (Slininger, Sherrill, & Jankowski, 2000). These positive aspects also have their impact on PE teachers according to their individual views of disability and special needs (Papadopoulou, Kokaridas, Papanikolaou, & Patsiasouras, 2004; Tripp & Rizzo, 2006). However, teacher attitude towards a special-needs student does influence day-to-day teaching and learning. The special-needs teacher's perception of disability is an important inclusivity factor that could make educational practice difficult, as class design needs constant adaptation and change. The paper presents an important educational experience at the University of Reggio Calabria, Italy, as we worked on our future special-needs teachers' perception and consequent management of inclusivity through motricity knowledge acquisition, with a view to designing and practicing more and more inclusive processes.

Abstract:
Preverbs are positionally-delimited grammatical forms that remain understudied. We examine their semantic classes in West Benue Congo (WBC) and its minor language Emai, which until recently was undocumented. Preverb classes in Emai display a subset of semantic categories identified in Dixon (1991, 2006, 2010) and Nuyts (2001, 2005, 2006, 2016). There are eight semantic classes for 30 odd preverb forms. They are apportioned according to their qualitative or quantitative character. Preverbs do not include traditional auxiliary categories of aspect, tense, and modality, which exhibit distinct diachronic and synchronic character. Common to preverbs is their orientation to grammatical subject, rather than utterance speaker. Members of each class ascribe a property to clausal subject. Preliminary evidence suggests that preverbs of similar semantic character exist in other West African languages.

Abstract:
In this article I examine the evolution of the Tyneside song, ‘The Blaydon Races’, into a local anthem, with a focus on the contribution of the plurals lads and lasses to this status. I consider the obstacles to the dialect song becoming an anthem, in particular its origins in non-respectable 19th-century music hall. Existing scholarship on 19th-century dialect song or poetry often sees such material as enhancing solidarity at the levels of class or region (Beal, 2000; Wales, 2002, 2006). Influenced by the work of Coupland (2006) and Eckert (2005), however, I posit a more fluid conception of identity within popular entertainment spaces, which may operate alongside, contribute to, or undermine categories such as class or region. I use an electronic corpus of 19th-century Tyneside song to investigate the collocation of lads in particular with Tyneside, and its role in fostering local patriotism. I also consider the pragmatic function of lads as a term of address or apostrophe to sporting heroes in song. I then examine the terms of address lads and lasses within the already intimate context of shared music hall song choruses, recalling, nevertheless, the controversies surrounding the institution. This function of lads in the chorus of ‘The Blaydon Races’, and the cultural ‘resonance’ of references to ‘lads an’ lasses’ are seen potentially to enhance solidarity from the outset. However, increasingly with locally patriotic functions, they can enhance group bonding within evolving contexts of shared singing – within the later music hall, among troops in both World Wars, and among Newcastle United football supporters.

Abstract:
AbstractThe red oak borer, Enaphalodes rufulus (Haldeman), is a native wood-boring beetle implicated as a major contributor to recent high levels of oak mortality in northern Arkansas. Northern red oaks, Quercus rubra L. (Fagaceae), were grouped into three classes of red oak borer infestation history based on crown condition and basal red oak borer emergence holes: class I (low infestation), class II (moderate infestation), and class III (high infestation). In 2004 and 2005, trees from each class were mechanically wounded and callus formation was measured after one year. Class I trees exhibited significantly greater callus formation than class III trees in both years. Monthly measurements in spring and summer of 2006 indicated significant differences in callus formation among classes, with class I trees healing over significantly earlier. Moisture was measured in bark samples removed 1 week and 4 weeks after initiation of three treatments: control, mechanical wounding, and artificial insertion of larvae. Moisture levels did not vary among infestation classes or treatments. This research indicates that bark moisture is likely not a defense against red oak borer, but that callus overgrowth may be a defense early in the second year of the life cycle in healthy trees.

A strong and computational entanglement criterion, i.e. the Breuer–Hall criterion, has been proposed independently by Breuer [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97 (2006) 080501; J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 39 (2006) 11847] and Hall [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 39 (2006) 14119]. As the first explicit example, we show that the class of bound entangled states found by Fei et al. [Phys. Lett. A 352 (2006) 321] exactly violate the Breuer–Hall criterion. This example can be considered as one of the test platforms of a variety of entanglement criteria and may be helpful for us to develop more powerful entanglement criteria.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the change in exponential function material in the KBK 2004 curriculum textbooks up to the 2013 revised 2017 curriculum in Indonesia in a study of theory and technology and based on reference to the epistemological model of exponent functions containing pre-psychological organisation. The data source was taken from the mathematics handbook of class XII IPA for KBK 2004 curriculum and KTSP 2006 curriculum, the BSE math class XII book for 2013 curriculum until the 2013 revised 2016 curriculum and the mathematics module specialization book for class X for the 2013 revised curriculum 2017. Data analysis techniques used by researchers were divided into 4, namely coding, categorizing, comparison, discussion. The results of research that has been done, researchers have found the presentation of exponential function theory with 5 core categories of understanding. In theoretical studies, the 2013 revised 2016 curriculum mathematics textbook has a more complex theory and is in accordance with the reference epistemological models. While technology studies have math books, there are more complex technologies, namely the 2013 revised 2014 curriculum mathematics textbooks, there is the first form of technology and in the 2013 revised 2017 curriculum mathematics textbooks and the 2016 revised 2013 curriculum mathematics textbooks, there is a third form of technology textbooks and the curriculum mathematics textbooks 2006 (KTSP 2006) there is a third form of technology.

Abstract:
Given the increasing role that informal caregivers play in the Irish health, social and economic systems, this short empirical paper outlines and maps the spatial distribution of caregivers from the 2002 and 2006 Censuses to provide some preliminary insights into patterns of caregiving in Ireland. The primary tasks involved mapping the distribution of carers at small area-level in both 2002 and 2006 and noting specific changes in patterns from the 2006 data. Patterns of informal caring are discussed in relation to: (a) clusters and concentrations (as measured by location quotients), (b) specific distributions related to intensities of caring, (c) key changes noted between 2002 and 2006 and (d) some preliminary explorations of explanatory data. Associations were identified between high-intensity caring and age, social class, deprivation and working in the home. Finally, potential applied policy uses for data for informal caring are identified including needs assessment and as an evidence base for modelling spatial service equity.

Abstract:
Recommendations for reforming high school mathematics curricula emphasize the importance of engaging students in mathematical investigations of societal issues (CCSSI 2010; NCTM 2000). Proponents argue that these investigations can positively influence students' social awareness and their perceptions of the use of mathematics for understanding societal problems (Frankenstein 1997; Gutstein 2006; Skovsmose 1994). In this article, I share results from my analysis of high school students' experiences as they participated in an investigation of racial bias and the death penalty. Although this classroom investigation took place about ten years ago, the lessons from students' experiences are still relevant today.

Abstract:
BackgroundCross-sectional surveys of older people commonly find associations between higher levels of depressive symptoms and poorer cognitive performance, but the direction of effect is unclear. We examined whether there was a bidirectional relationship between depressive symptoms and general cognitive ability in non-demented older people, and explored the role of physical health, smoking, exercise, social class and education as potential confounders of this association and as possible determinants of the rate of change of cognitive decline and depressive symptoms.MethodThe English Longitudinal Study of Ageing consists of people aged 50 years and over. Cognitive function and self-reported depressive symptoms were measured in 2002–2003, 2004–2005, 2006–2007 and 2008–2009. We fitted linear piecewise models with fixed knot positions to allow different slopes for different age groups. Analyses are based on 8611 people.ResultsMean cognitive function declined with age; there was no trend in the trajectory of depressive symptoms. Better cognitive function was associated with less depression up to the age of 80 years. Greater depression was associated with a slightly faster rate of cognitive decline but only in people aged 60–80 years. There were no consistent associations across age groups between sex, smoking, education, social class, exercise or number of chronic physical illnesses and the rate of change of cognitive decline or depressive symptoms.ConclusionsIn this longitudinal study of older people, there was no consistent evidence that being more depressed led to an acceleration in cognitive decline and no support for the hypothesis that there might be reciprocal dynamic influences between cognitive ability and depressive symptoms.

Abstract:
Confronted by the increasingly changing and varied nature of disabilities in Higher Education (Bowe, 2000; McGuire & Scott, 2002), Disability Service providers across North America are progressively moving away from targeted remedial assistance focusing on the disabilities of students, to a less frontline role involving the sensitization of faculty around strategies that seek to widen access and develop awareness (Sopko, 2008). Universal Design is hence often the model of choice (Rose, Harbour, Johnston, Daley & Abarbanell, 2006). It incorporates extensive use of technology and seeks the implementation of winning conditions in the classroom space that reduce or eliminate the need for later remedial work with students (Burgstahler, 2006). The hypothesis of this paper is that Universal Design, though conceived as a tool for a specific clientele, may quickly transpire to be the model best suited to serve the needs of the student body at large. The paper attempts to demonstrate how the core values underlying the Universal Design approach in fact meet wider educational aspirations of the 21st century. Not only do its strategies and goals allow wider access to students with Disabilities, but they allow the integration of the ‘millennium learners’, encourage higher student retention, guarantee higher rates of graduation and establish greater equity and respect for diversity. A model, designed to assist the minority, is quickly becoming a tool that has the capacity to open the class and the lecture hall to the diversity of the emerging and metamorphosing High Education learner, even if his/ her idiosyncrasies are still barely known (Howard, 2004).

Abstract:
Acari are responsible for millions of dollars worth of damage each year as a result of infestations of animals, plants and man. They directly affect our health and prosperity as animal and plant parasites, vectors of disease, and producers of allergens. The indiscriminate use of pesticides has quickly induced resistance in many parasites. At present, the control of acarid parasitic diseases in agriculture, human and veterinary medicine is mainly based on the use of drugs; and for this reason the lack of effective drugs often prevents the control of some parasitic diseases, making them more serious and important. The use of commercial drugs involves many problems, besides the drug-resistance shown by the most important parasites. Environmental damage and the toxicity of many synthetic drugs, represent the main problems that strongly limit drug use. In addition, drug residues in plant and animal food products are important reasons for further economic losses for farmers and must be regarded as potentially hazardous to man and the environment. Plant-derived compounds are generally more easily degradable and could show a smaller negative environmental impact with respect to synthetic drugs. For these reasons, the evaluation of the antiacarid activity of plant extracts is increasingly being investigated in order to obtain new leads, as demonstrated by recent studies that have evaluated and confirmed the effectiveness of many plant compounds on bacteria, fungi, protozoa, helminths and arthropods. This review will be limited to the class Arachnida, sub-class Acaridi, particularly to their control in agriculture, veterinary and human medicine using natural methods.

Motivated by some results of L. Berg (2002), in this paper we find the second member in the asymptotic development of some of the positive solutions of a class of difference equations of second and third orders. The main result in this paper partially solves an open problem by S. Stević (2003), and it is applied to some classes of mathematical biology models, for example, generalized Beverton-Holt stock recruitment model, flour beetle population model, mosquito population equations, and discrete delay logistic difference equation.
