McGahee, Michael Teryle Jr. "Scale and the Interpretation of Voting Patterns in Virginia, 2003-2006." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36375.

Abstract:
Electoral geographers are mostly concerned with mapping the responses of voters to different political candidates, while they also work to explain the factors that influence those responses. Yet most studies do not consider how different geographic contexts can affect the political perceptions of voters. In particular, people who live in close proximity to one another may come to embrace similar beliefs and values, while broader social and economic processes may divide these individuals into separate camps. Thus, electoral studies performed at the local level may produce different results than those done at the regional or national level. In exploring how different scales of analysis can give different interpretations of voting patterns, this research gathered data from a series of elections that took place in Virginia. These elections, which occurred between 2003 and 2006, span a variety of federal and state offices, with each presiding over a certain geographic jurisdiction. The study proceeded to map the results of each election in terms of three different types of geographic areas: precincts, counties, and legislative districts. The maps displayed the majority winners within each of these areas, giving a rough indication of the bases of support for each of the different candidates. The study then determined the number of instances where two neighboring areas both favored the same candidate, as well as the number of cases where they voted for opposing candidates. These data helped to shed light on the autocorrelation structure of voting patterns in Virginia, revealing how people in the same general vicinity tend to vote together. Overall, the results of this study demonstrate that smaller geographic units (e.g., precincts) exhibit greater autocorrelation in voting than do larger areas. This observation agrees with the concept of sectionalism, which asserts that location and culture are key influences on voting behavior. However, the data also suggest that class differences are a major source of electoral cleavage, as people from different social and economic backgrounds tend to settle in different areas. The use of multiple scales of analysis thus presents multiple explanations for the voting trend of a given location.

This research aims to make a criticism of the Lula government and its approach to the Brazilian poverty. To do so, it focuses on the articulation between, on one hand, welfare policy Family Grant to the working class and, second, economic policy dedicated to pay big money to domestic and foreign bourgeoisies. Also, is intended to design widespread attention by President Lula, in addition to representatives of the International Monetary Fund, according to which the link above would be a quiet revolution. The realization of this research was the theoretical framework based on historical materialism, from which the field is built categorical necessary to achieve the objectives listed

Abstract:
This work intend to show a discursive analysis of Folha de S. Paulo and O Globo, in the course of presidential election of 2006, to verify how these media built a discursive game in this time. Then 50 cape of Globo and 80 of Folha de S. Paulo was analyzed, between august and October. However, 10 editions were a random separated. The choice of these newspapers is because of these presses are considerate the most sold of Brasil and belong of the bigger importance states of nation: Rio and S. Paulo. This analysis was made in the first page of newspapers, because it can be seen only not its readers, any kind of people that goes to the newsstand everyday. This research use ADF tool (French line of Discourse Analysis), because it can explain how can be performance of these media. Trough press history could be possible understand better the relationship between media and truth, how these presses build this. The newspapers, ideological instrument of State, propagate the built truth, allowed, for always dominant class. The resulted showed that these newspapers built a discourse to benefit a candidate and prejudice the other. Then, these media masked negative aspects about one and evidenced these of opponent concurrent.

Staniland, John Luke Seneviratne. "Tale of two townships : race, class and the changing contours of collective action in the Cape Town townships of Guguletu and Bonteheuwel, 1976-2006." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6420.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the emergence and evolution of ‘progressive activism and organisation’ between 1976 and 2006 in the African township of Guguletu and the coloured township of Bonteheuwel within the City of Cape Town. In doing so it compares both how activism has changed over time (including as a result of democratisation) and how it differed between and within these two communities. Whilst at heart an empirical study of activism it seeks to move beyond the specificities of the cases studied to also draw broader conclusions about the nature and causes of collective action and organisation. Drawing on both social movement and class theory it aims to shed some light on the fundamental question of the relationship between structure and agency - why do people act and what defines the form of action they take? It combines a quantitative study of the changing relationship between race, class and state policy with qualitative studies of activism in Guguletu and Bonteheuwel. These two studies cover in detail: the development and unfolding of the riots of 1976; the great boycott season of 1979/80 which saw large numbers of Africans and coloureds across Cape Town drawn into school, bus and consumer boycotts; the development of activism between 1980 and 1985, including the impact of the United Democratic Front; the township unrest of 1985-7; the transition period between 1988 and 1994; and post-apartheid activism in the two communities. It draws on theories of class which recognise the importance of peoples’ positions within the state’s distributional networks (citizenship), experiences and expectations of social mobility and the impact of historical experience of class formation on expectation (moral economy). In doing this it shows how differences in race, education, age and labour market position all interacted to pattern activism in the case studies. Struggles in Cape Town throughout the period 1976-2006 were not dualistic conflict between classes, races or between the oppressed and forces of global capital, nor were they mechanistic responses to the opening and closing of political space. They were complex coalitions of competing and collaborating class forces which were defined by the underlying nature of the city’s political economy and which emerged in interaction with changing opportunities for action.

Waller, George Darryl. "The Impact of Music Education on Academic Achievement, Attendance Rate, and Student Conduct on the 2006 Senior Class in One Southeast Virginia Public School Division." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27477.

Full text
Abstract:
For several decades music educators have proposed that the study of music has a significant impact on student academic achievement, attendance rates, and student conduct. In an era of higher student and teacher accountability, increasing budget cuts, the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), and stringent state standards of learning, a number of educators have argued that education in music can boost test scores, attendance, attitudes toward school, reduce discipline referrals, and increase overall academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to quantify general education claims by examining high school academic achievement data, attendance rates, and student conduct of the 2006 graduating class in one Southeast Virginia school division. In addition, this study briefly explores the impact that music education has on the human brain and on academic achievement at the elementary school and secondary school levels. Moreover, influences that integrating music has on academic achievement in general education courses, arts integration programs, and elements of an effective music education program are explored. Specific research studies provide evidence to support key concepts and the need for additional research. The research design includes the independent variables: subject and number of years enrolled in formal music courses or no formal music courses, gender, ethnicity, and enrollment in formal music courses or no formal music courses in high school, grades nine through twelve. The dependent variables include: academic achievement as measured by grade twelve weighted cumulative grade point average (GPA), attendance rate as measured by the number of absences in grade twelve, and student conduct as measured by the number of discipline referrals in grade nine through grade twelve. Four research questions were used to explore academic achievement, attendance rate, and student conduct with regard to music or no music courses taken in grades nine through twelve. Ethnicity and gender were reported using the common dependent variables among participants in three populations " entire study population, music population, and non music population. Conclusions were based upon sophisticated statistical tests including descriptive and inferential statistics, correlations, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and regression statistics. These tests confirmed the four research questions and null hypotheses that music students out perform their non music counterparts in academic achievement, attendance rate, and student conduct. Although the studied school division does not distinguish between excused and unexcused absences, music students had fewer days absent than non music students.

Abstract: This dissertation aims to explore the major political actions and popular struggles waged in Venezuela during the first two terms of the administration led by Hugo Chávez Frías (1999-2006). To this end, three central bases permeate the debate: the concepts of neoliberalism, social struggles and political confrontation. They all are necessary to express the clear interface between the victory by Hugo Chávez in the 1998 election and two variables: despite the weakness of the Venezuelan social movements, the increase in the quantity and intensity of social conflicts and, also, the disastrous results obtained by the neoliberal onslaught during the 1990s. However, once elected, the Chávez government has advanced little in order to confront the main obstacle to the continued and sustainable development of the country: its economy structurally depends on the proceeds from the oil market. In this sense, it is clear that the relations of production in Venezuela remained essentially capitalists. Yet, there was, since the transformations imposed by the Bolivarian administration, the solidification of a new "bloc in power". The current power correlation of social forces is a direct reflection of the clash between two very different strategies within the chavismo: in one side, the hegemonic perspective "top down", whose actions are structured in partisan and hierarchically oriented orders from the political party; on the another side, the view "bottom up": a strand of opposition guided by efforts to encourage the construction of a reality on which social movements end up acting as political forces capable of commanding the Bolivarian revolution "from below". The alternations between these strategies are constant in the course of the experience led by Hugo Chávez and, for that mean, are extremely important to analyze its entirety

Abstract:

Nadarajah, Suthaharan. "Clash of governmentalities : liberal peace, Tamil freedom and the 2001-2006 peace process in Sri Lanka." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2010. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28880/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation argues that the dynamics, trajectories and outcomes of the Norwegian-led intervention in Sri Lanka from 2001 to 2006 to end the protracted armed conflict in the island can be productively understood as a 'clash of governmentalities', as the result of the simultaneous pursuit of competing idealizations of how populations, territory and forms of political rule should be organized. The first part of the study explores the concept of governmentality and sets out what is meant by a 'clash of governmentalities', a notion that turns on the different exercises of sovereignty, discipline and governmental modes of power in the service of competing rationalities of rule. Governmentality, it is argued, provides a novel and insightful way of looking at the consequences of international interventions in sites of 'internal' conflict such as Sri Lanka. The second part of the study explores the Norwegian- led peace process in Sri Lanka to show how two governmental rationalities, here termed Liberal Peace and Tamil Freedom, clashed via a myriad of micro-practices and ultimately produced an impasse which led not to lasting peace, but renewed war. The thesis thus examines the consequences of Liberal Peace, a political rationality which posits economic interdependence, democracy and the rule of law as constituting the sustainable foundations for world peace, encountering other, 'local' governmental projects which are also trying, sometimes violently, to reorder places in the global South according to their own rationalities of rule. The thesis concludes with a brief discussion of how the concept of a clash of governmentalities lends itself to further empirical and theoretical research.

The dating of the numismatic evidence from the harbour area, that was founded in the early 5th century, ranges from 2nd century BC to late 8th century AD. Most of the finds date from the 4th to the 7th century AD, the most important period for the harbour, with evidence of trade with other areas of the Mediterranean basin, particularly with North Africa and the Near East. The evidence of the Basilica of San Severo, founded in the late 6th century for the safekeeping of the saint relics, shows a quite different pattern, with a chronological span that ranges from the 1st century BC to the 14th century AD. The occupation of the site is continuous but the numismatic evidence is scarce, until the building of the monastery South of the Basilica, the area from which most of the coins were retrieved. The large amounts of late antique, Ostrogothic and Byzantine coinage, particularly certain specific types, like the Felix Ravenna, hypothetically minted in Rome, or ½ and ¼ follis Salona emissions of Justinian I, have allowed some in-depth analysis, specifically related to weight, size and style. This type of data, as well as the pattern of distribution, have allowed to suggest new hypothesis about their production at the mint of Ravenna. Also important is the finding of coinage of Constantine VIII, rare and unknown emissions found only in the neighbourhood of Classe and Ravenna.

Abstract:
The research is to investigate the equality and equity case with regards to land redistribution in the Amathole District of Eastern Cape. This research is based on the administration of land redistribution and reality that the majority of the poor and landless people reside in the rural areas. Therefore the land question is a focal point to which the main question of the research, assessing the impact of class antagonism on the administration of land redistribution, will be directed to. This research is mainly about the pursuit of policies that relate to redistribution of land, particularly the farms from the rich White farmers to the previously disadvantaged emerging rural Black farmers. Thus the land reform is viewed as one strategy to alleviate the crushing poverty situation in South Africa, particularly in the rural areas of Amathole District. The research is to investigate the administrative policies with regards to land redistribution and also check and confirm how the race and class intertwining affects the implementation of these administrative policies. Since S.A is a class society, the research has to actually investigate the impact of class antagonism on the process of redistribution. This is due to the conviction that the officials of the departments of state, in anywhere, are out in search of wealth hence the fraud and corruption. In S.A., land reform also has an ethical and political-economic dimension. It seeks to favour A over B. This research, therefore, intends to investigate whether the administrative policies of land redistribution are manipulated on the basis of race and class.

Burckel, Vincent.

Full text
Abstract:
What can be defined as the « triple life » of the working class, refers to the three forms of the working class’ habitus. The members of the working class do not equally display these forms according to the historical period. If for the “iron” generation sent to the hub or the kitchen since the age of 14 and designed to live a simple rough life in the “small-town”, the “hard model” of the habitus prevails in an evident way; the “crisis generation” that has over a long time been protected by the soft comfort of the family home and a juvenile atmosphere in school, now listens to the propaganda of a world that becomes more “open” and seems to start life in a “gentle slope”. Nevertheless, since 2008 the aggravation of the circumstances of working class’ life for an undetermined period, has led to a hardening of the ensemble in the context of unrestrained capitalism. According to the dominant ideology the working class should have melted into the bourgeoisie ever since the fall of the Berlin wall in the 1990’s. The young generation of the working class finds a new horizon of exploitation and domination. Poverty hits them instead of the “American dream” and a society without classes which they could have imagined while watching TF1. Considering their relationship with politics, it is known that the 1980’s (the Mitterand years) have marked a reflux of “popular communism” and the insubordination of the workers. Although, the years 2000 (the Sarkozy-Hollande-Macron years) come with a little new wind of popular insurrection that grows more and more intense, until it becomes the “yellow tempest” in 2018. Amongst the people of Hagoncourt that have been interviewed, with the exception of the “iron” and “crisis” generations, three forms of habitus can be identified that imply a social existence threatened and weakened by the dominant class: 1) agonistic or warlike morals traditionally considered « masculine », that valorise physical force and brutal manners and language and sometimes tend to a certain nihilism. 2) peaceful morals, traditionally considered “feminine” that give privilege to tender manners, a kind of timidity and sometimes tend to a certain social conformity. 3) political or civic morals with a preference for the general interest and the quest for meaning associated to the valorisation of culture and that can possibly take on a “revolutionary” political disposition

Madrid, Sebastián. "The formation of ruling class men: private schooling, class and gender relations in contemporary Chile." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/20006.

Full text
Abstract:
This project examines the emerging masculinities and the transformation in gender relations in the contemporary Chilean ruling class, and among its different fractions. Special attention is given to the connections between elite private education and the formation of ruling class masculinities through the lives of these men. Ruling class men have not been systematically studied, in comparison with working or middle class men. Available studies focus on men at the top of key institutions or who are extremely rich. A more substantial concept of class is needed, and this project develops a relational conceptualization of class and gender. Forty-five life-history interviews were conducted with graduates of different types of elite private and selective public schools. Analysis of these interviews, by intensive case study method, explores the way in which family and school dynamics, and labour processes, interact in the formation of classed and gendered practices. The study includes life-histories with ruling class women in order to explore their role in the making of the ruling class and hegemonic masculinities. New ways of understanding social class and its relation to gender are presented, in a context of social changes promoted by neoliberal globalisation. The project seeks to enhance understanding of the interplay of gender and class in a generative perspective. In relation to masculinities, this perspective shows how masculinities are constructed historically through class practices, instead of conceptualising class as a pre-existent and static category that affects gender relations. The focus is on the process of growing up men, and the making of the ruling class, as two simultaneous and closely interconnected processes. Studying the lives of ruling class men is a way of broadening our understanding of social inequalities and the dynamics of oppression by including those who are in positions of power and privilege. Particularly, the study examines the relation between the formation of the contemporary ruling class and its role in producing hegemonic forms of masculinities.

Wolfson, Shael Nathan. "Market Reaction to the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2010. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1116.

Full text
Abstract:
The Class Action Fairness Act of 2005 (CAFA) was signed into law on February 18, 2005. Prior to CAFA, plaintiffs found it easier for class action lawsuits to be tried in their preferred venue—state courts. Changes introduced by CAFA practically removed the majority of class action jurisdiction from state to federal courts. Since law and regulation might serve as an external corporate governance mechanism, an interesting question is whether CAFA has strengthened or weakened corporate governance. If CAFA improves corporate governance, associated marginal benefits would outweigh marginal costs. The opposite would be true if CAFA weakens corporate governance. This issue was hotly debated in the US Congress. The proponents argued that CAFA would reduce costs for the affected firms, while opponents argued the opposite. The main purpose of this paper is to examine which side of the debate is reflected in market reactions to various events that either enhanced or reduced the chances of the passage of CAFA. We identify the firms that are most likely to be affected by CAFA and find that the overall market reaction for these firms is positive when the likelihood of CAFA passage increases, while the reaction has been negative when the chance of its passage diminishes. We also hypothesize that firms that are more likely to be exposed to product liability litigation would experience a significantly higher (positive or negative) abnormal return than firms that are more likely to be involved in contract liability law suits. The results support this hypothesis. We also examine potential factors that might explain cross-sectional variations in abnormal returns and find that duality of Chairmanship and CEO has negative impact, while the
