Abstract:
Abstract ‘Clare’ is a descendant of ‘Stoplight’, ‘Surecrop’, and ‘Sunrise’ (Fig. 1). Selection Ia. 7-75065, made in 1977, was named ‘Clare’ for my daughter Mary Clare and her grandmother, Clare Peyton. County Clare, Ireland, where I visited in 1985 exploring for breeding material, is an additional reason for the use of Clare.

Abstract:
In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, scientists discovered apposite similarities between how the nesting bird learns to sing and how the human child learns to speak. This article explores the parallels that John Clare observed between the ‘mutterings’ of the bird while learning to sing and his own processes of composition. By examining the deep connections between Clare's responsiveness to birdsong and the ways in which he conceived of the poetic voice, this article seeks to extend and, in certain respects, redefine some of the key terms which have framed responses to the writings of this so-called ‘peasant-poet’: ‘agency’, ‘craft’ and ‘self-consciousness’.

Abstract:
Notes that the minor Romantic poet John Clare commands increasing attention at academic conferences, in essay collections, and on college syllabi. Argues the practices that have kept Clare in view have also rendered him partially inaccessible to students, scholars and general readers. Suggests readers are now in possession of the materials with which to respond to and interpret Clare’s work.

Abstract:
The Second Vatican Council (1962-5) called for religious orders to renew themselves in a two-fold return to the sources of their Christian life, jointly to the Gospels and to the inspiration of each institute’s founder, a process to be combined with a movement to bring the religious life into line with the ‘tenor of the times’.Thirty years after the issuing on 28 October 1965 of Perfectae Caritatis, the conciliar decree on the religious life, it seems particularly relevant to look at how far this renewal has been enacted since the Council. Furthermore, given the theme of this volume it seems especially apt to examine the role which that call for the rediscovery of the founder’s spirit has played in one such renewal.

Abstract:
In Thomas Hardy’s masterpiece, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Angel Clare is often referred to “angel” who is gentle and kind. However, it is Angel Clare who loves her that pushed Tess D’Urbervilles into deep abyss of death and ruined her step by step. This paper is going to analyze Angel Clare from a totally different perspective, the image of Angel Clare is not the conventional “angel” in the eyes of most critics of Tess of the D’Urbervilles, wheras, he appeared to be more like a hypocritical secularist, who wants to dominate both women and nature, and the hierarchical and patriarchal values are deeply rooted in his thoughts no matter how hard he tried to decline.
