Full textEuropean cities are often presented as a model of sustainability for their capacity to reconcile social cohesion with economic prosperity. However, high environmental impact and persistence in social inequalities raises questions about the capacity of European urbanism to be sustainable in the future. This work analyses moderate and radical approaches to urban sustainability in Europe with the aim of assessing which has the most potential making European cites social and environmentally sustainable. The analysis focuses on the UK using a nuanced empirical base at different spatial scales. The analysis includes national trends in environmental impact, regional trends in material welfare, a study of the development strategy the Swansea City Region and an experiment in neighbourhood regeneration. The main argument is that European cities require a structural transition – and not just strategic adjustment – to become truly sustainable.

Full textCan internet logic scheme be used as a basis to describe public policies evolution on renewable energies production and sharing in urban areas all over the world? The research project analyses the two networks (internet and energetic grids) architectures in actual and future urban areas. This analysis is connected with present and future forecasts energy productions from traditional fuels and from renewable sources. Theoretical analysis is conducted following a double conceptual pathway: - societal networks (Manuel Castells theory) and urban areas evolution (Saskia Sassen and Mike Davis) in order to picture the evolution of cities and towns in modern economies and in developing countries (Chapters 2 and 5); - Material and Energy Flow Analysis (approach by Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy) applied to renewable energy (Chapters 3 and 4) In Chapter 6 case studies are exposed on the deep cleavage between two different worlds: innovative, rich towns on a side and the landfills cities, slums on the other side. In the last part hypothesis and thesis are put together and open questions are explained (Chapter 7).

Full textThe research addresses the study of the reticular settlement model, the potential of networks and urban nodes to represent the spatial logic drawn by the material and immaterial flows. The argument is developed through three main parts. The first part, devoted to the scientific and theoretical apparatus, offers a critical register of theory and the evolution of the concept of network, drawing on the literature of the social geographical and economic sciences and on the practices relating to the spatialization of networks at territorial level. The second part focuses on the study and interpretation of the polycentric settlement model, where, through the deepening of European examples, are found relations with the reticular model in order to understand how the latter integrates and strengthens the polycentric model. These analyses have led to the formulation of the hypothesis of a " polycentric reticular multilevel model," in which special attention has been paid to the role of the city-node at different levels of spatial relationships. So were analysed, with particular attention, the territories in which the flows, material and immaterial, find their spatial dimension and where the local level is connected with the global: the regional platforms and the gateway cities, new territorial configurations, result of the development dynamics ongoing. The third part addresses the issue of reticular governance and the remaining issues in the ongoing process of re-scaling that characterizes the whole of Europe. Based on the analysis of the European polycentric territorial systems studied, the research proposes an hypothesis of guidelines for territorial governance of these systems with the intention of providing organizational and procedural addresses.

Full textThe aim of the thesis was to analyze the phenomenon of so-called fringe events, alternative and independent urban events, which arise from bottom-up initiatives that reject the institutionalized system. The first part is dedicated to a reconstruction of the debate on contemporary urban events by identifying the main classifications, the three dominant debates and by discussing the concept of an event city. The second part analyses three different case studies: Marseille 2013 Off (city of Marseille, France), Fuorisalone (city of Milan, Italy) and Paratissima (city of Turin, Italy). At first they are described in their constituent elements (the birth and the history of the event, the budget, the partners and the project governance, the local stakeholders and the relationship with the official event) to see how much those events can be considered "fringe". While later they are analyzed within their urban context to see how far fringe events manage to be urban events that make local identity. The conclusions of the work offer an overview of the three case studies that allow us to analyze the three fringe events in a comparative perspective that describes the common features and differences between them. This analysis allows us to grasp the fringe events configurations based on their alternative nature and their effects on attempts of urban branding. Finally, we will see how from the specifics of each case study examined, these mechanisms are involved in the production of an alternative image to that produced by the official event

Full textThis research project aims to shed light on the spice trade in the Middle Ages, starting from the precious data contained in the custom registers of Bologna (1388-1448). These documents were used to report any goods (related to the so-called "dazio della mercanzia") that crossed Bologna, and then continued to other destinations, especially Florence. As for spices, Bologna was an important hub in order to connect the main emporiums of the Adriatic Sea (first of all Venice) with the markets of Tuscany, such as Florence or Pisa, from where the spices sailed – thanks to the port of Porto Pisano – to other European regions, such as France, England, the Iberian Peninsula and Flanders. The daily, monthly, annual and total quantities of spices found in these registers are undoubtedly unexpected: a product traditionally described by historians as rare, precious and difficult to distribute in Europe, passed through Bologna with surprising constancy and reaching very high volumes. The daily, monthly, annual and total quantities of spices are undoubtedly unexpected: a product traditionally described by historians as rare, precious and hard to get to Europe, passed through Bologna with surprising constancy and reaching very high volumes. Considering that Bologna, despite its importance on the Italian scene, was still a "minor" crossroads in the complex commercial networks on which spices used to circulate (such as the great maritime routes, for example), these high quantities of spices lead us to reflect on what has been said so far about the spice trade in the Middle Ages. By combining the traditional historiographical method with an "empirical" approach, which takes into account the material and organoleptic characteristics of spices, it is possible to reopen the debate around this topic, which still has much to offer to food history research.
SCACCHI, MICAELA. "“Innesto Urbano” come opportunità di trasformazione del quartiere nella città contemporanea." Doctoral thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11573/944484.
Full textThe thesis is the result of a research coming from some findings on the transformations of contemporary European city and from a personal idea. This idea suggests a link between the shape / the use of places and the “affective” component (positive or negative) that characterizes them and it proposes a renewed interest in “the dimension of neighbourhood”, as an object of investigation and as a suitable scale of action for urban regeneration. Complex, various and fragmented dynamics are changing the physical forms, social relations and the use of urban space, altering the perception of it. Sometimes a disorientation of the residents comes from all that, and they, often with “a sense of rootlessness and alienation”, don’t recognize places and they don’t identify themselves in collective living spaces. The reference field is, therefore, the study of the city’s transformation and the contemporary concept of “neighbourhood”. The thesis, on one side, recomposes the theoretical background and the different positions on the “dimension” of the neighbourhood, on the other one, it introduces the concept of “urban graft” - borrowed from agronomy - as a methodological reflection and practice, and as a requirement/element of opportunity of neighbourhood transformation in the contemporary city. The main objective of the research, therefore, is to make possible, in the complex combination of physical and social factors, the transformation of “peripheral contexts” (incomplete, unfinished, in transformation or in the making) in neighbourhoods and the recovery of the relation between the physical quality and the perception of identity in urban space. The text is organized into four parts, divided into chapters. The research develops first an empirical approach, then a theoretical and lexical investigation to introduce and define the concept of “urban graft”. The thesis, also, works on some examples and case studies in Europe, using an application and experimental method, understanding the relations among the different variables identified. The first part (the framework) reconstructs the theoretical background of the thesis and the theoretical and interpretative structure of the main concepts. The second part is focused on the new term and the concept of “urban graft”, borrowed by agronomic practice, but enriching it with new meanings and comparing it with some contemporary approaches (area-based approach, people-based approach; community building process), considered useful to support better conditions of taking root of the grafts. The third part, with an application and experimental approach, proposes an evaluation matrix of some European experiences. The matrix is the beginning to define the essential components, to evaluate the quality and the results of “urban grafts” and to select four cases of study (Bijlmermeer - Amsterdam; La Mina - Barcelona; Rača - Bratislava; Quarto Oggiaro - Milan), illustrated with critical cards. The fourth part, at the end, presents critical assessments on the initial idea and the closing remarks on the contents arising from the case-studies. These “open” results are useful to provide more conceptual thinking for future research and for possible practical applications. In conclusion, it appears that “the urban graft” can be considered as a possible sequence of action, opportunity (design or otherwise) to address local urban transformation and as a chance to reconstruct the connection among inhabitants and neighbourhood.
