Abstract:
After a blood-sacrifice it was the custom of greek city communities to meet for a public meal. These public meals form the subject of the present study, which traces their history from the eight century b. C. To the fourth century a. D. : in archaic societies, in classical athens, and in the greek cities of the hellenistic and roman periods. The study will also concern itself with the way(s) in which greek discourse represented the public meals of other communities: their ancestors, and non-greek peoples. The sources used are various, consisting mainly of literary texts, iconography, archeology, and epigraphy - the relevant material in this last category being here assembled for the first time. The study is offered as an addition to existing research on greek sacrifice; as a contribution to the history of ancient practices relating to food; and as a reflection on the definition(s) of politics in greek cities

Abstract:
Thesis topic is "Problem of CITES in the Czech Republic." It´s main objective is to identify the "Convention on Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora" (CITES) and in case of deficiencies, propose measures to eliminate them. The work consists of two parts - a literature review and a practical part. The literature search involves the formation, functioning, organization and legislation Convention, defines the specimens on which the Convention applies, and which may include attachments. Finally, focusing on the illegal trade of endangered species. The practical part defines the principal organs, which are in the Czech Republic operate in ensuring compliance with the Convention. Instantiates a specimen important for the Czech Republic, how they should be handled, register them and hold. Finally, the course focuses on the most important cases and controls found in the Czech Republic. In the end the results are evaluated and suggested various recommendations to improve.

Gherchanoc, Florence. "Sociabilite et famille dans les cites grecques." Paris, EHESS, 1998. http://books.openedition.org/psorbonne/30007.

Full text
Abstract:
Looking at families in greek cities from archaic to hellenistic times, i argue that they are based on integration mecanisms like sociability rituals. Daily little gestures as much as broad feasts build family life and introduce notions of 'familiarity'. They define the family identity and its inner and external limits, its boundaries. They contribute to place the family in its city, drawing relationships in between oikoi and city: family rituals of sociability provide families with a public and social display. Thus family and civic memories are complementary. Nevertheless, family, as a group of sociability, can be a place of 'counter-power' of the city cohesion; that explains wills expressed in some cities to reduce or supress expressions of family sociability

Challender, Daniel. "Reforming international wildlife trade interventions in CITES." Thesis, University of Kent, 2014. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/53875/.

Full text
Abstract:
International trade in wildlife is a major threat to biodiversity conservation. CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which entered into force in 1975, is the primary mechanism for maintaining sustainability in international wildlife trade. However, CITES boasts few conservation successes and its regulatory approach is proving ineffective in many cases. In this thesis I recommend reforms to international wildlife trade interventions both within and beyond CITES, which would enable the Convention to more effectively govern trade and lead to the improved conservation status of trade-threatened species. In chapter two, I review typical and atypical interventions in CITES and critically evaluate the effectiveness of the Convention. I argue that trade measures need to go beyond regulation and should be multi-faceted, reflecting the socio-economic, cultural and economic complexity of wildlife trade and I outline key areas of research to inform these interventions. In chapter three I focus on high-value wildlife and argue that a regulatory response to poaching for international trade is an inadequate long-term conservation strategy and interventions should involve incentivizing local communities to conserve wildlife, the re-examination of sustainable off-take mechanisms, including regulated trade, ranching, and wildlife farming, and demand management measures. In chapter four, I critically evaluate CITES from an economic perspective through a case study on the trade in pangolins (Pholidota: Manidae) in Asia. I assert that to more effectively manage trade CITES should seek to understand markets and the impact of trade controls and address demand for wildlife as well as supply. In chapter five, I investigate the influence of non-state actors on decisions to amend the CITES Appendices. I find that they are successful in influencing decision-making, but they also claim unwarranted campaign victories and seek to abuse CITES, and Parties should exercise caution when interpreting non-state actor policy advice. In chapter six I discuss the contribution this thesis makes to conservation science and implications for governing wildlife trade before drawing final conclusions.

Abstract:
Probably created in 16-13 b. C. , beatica was an intensively urbanized province, execpt any areas of the sierra morena. Under augustus agglomerations were generally independant cities with various status : coloniae and municipia romanorum, cities with ius latii which we don't know the title - municipium or civitas - and mainly peregrine cities. The measures of the flavians : grant of the ius latii and transformation of many peregrine cities, perhaps all, in municipia latinorum, was the mark of the romanization of the province begun more than two centuries ago : cities had roman rules and the native aristocraty became cives romani after their members had held local offices in the flavian municipia. Civitates' status and individuel stratus were not ever uniform after these reforms, but the province' society was homogeneous. In baetica latins bored the tria nomina and the inhabitants of the coloniae, municipia romanorum or latinorum had the same behaviour towards the gods, the emperor, their fellow-citizens and the goods. Indigeneous signs are very thin

Abstract:
Four differents analyses concerning two novels : "the hope" by a. Malraux and "dfifting cities" by s. Tsirkas. The first analysis outlines "the personal myth" of the writers through their novel. The second studies the ideology of the writers through the architectural structure of these novels. The third examines the political history related in these two novels. The fourth points out certains concepts of these novels which preserve their cultural value nowadays. A research which tries to combine certains points of view peculiars to differents sectors of humans sciences : psychoanalysis, structuralism, political history and sociology, while the object fo the study is limited only to two novels

Abstract:
International trade in wildlife and endangered species is an extremely lucrative business, bringing in an estimated five billion US dollars annually. This makes it one of the world's largest industries. Nearly one third of this trade is illegal. Millions of animals suffer and die each year at the hands of man, often due to human greed and vanity. This international market for animals has led to drastic declines in the populations of many species, including such exotic animals as the rhino, leopard, tiger, and the African elephant. The African elephant's plight has arguably been the most popular. Due to trade in its ivory, African elephant populations declined so dramatically that experts claimed the elephant would be extinct by 2010. This paper examines the steps taken by international law to protect the African elephant, and specifically looks at the two strategies adopted by the African countries to ensure this protection.

Abstract:
This publication reports on some of the health challenges facing cities. It aims to serve as a guide for public managers and decision makers optimize the great potential of cities to improve the well-being of those who reside in the cities of Latin America and the Caribbean. It is organized in two parts. The first part, Health Inequalities in Latin American Cities, focuses on identifying the ways in which social inequality has led to negative health outcomes, in order to make visible the relevance of the challenge of inequality and the urgency to grapple with it. The second part, Urban Policies for Healthy Cities, focuses on how cities can contribute to improving the health standards in their population. The publication addresses critical issues for urban health, such as the interdependence between physical-social factors and health, the relationship between urban characteristics and the incidence of COVID-19, the connections between social inequality and exposure to pollution environment, the relationship between urban planning and gender violence, the power of urban interventions -such as public transport and social housing- to improve health indicators, and the relevance of having good data to improve the accessibility of health systems. All the contributions in this book are based on data and rigorous research, and present real cases of the cities of the region.
