Gentry, Wendy Ann. "Citation Context Analysis of Theory Use in Instructional Design and Technology Academic Articles." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/82931.

Full text
Abstract:
Citations allow researchers to define relationships across articles and develop arguments by building on the work of others. This study explores citation of theory symbols in Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) academic articles. The term theory symbol is used to define a concept that, after its original publication, is subsequently incorporated by later writers through citation. Exploring the citation history of the seminal publications makes it possible to trace theory symbol use over time and thus to trace its dissemination in the field. A typology of theory symbol use in IDT academic publication is developed through a citation context analysis (CCA) of a sample of articles published in Educational Technology Research and Development (ETRD) and its predecessor journals (1953–2012) which incorporate theory symbols through citation. This analysis contributes to an understanding of how theory has shaped IDT disciplinary knowledge and augments discourse analysis and bibliometrics by examining the context in which theory is incorporated into academic publication.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze the content of textbooks used in undergraduate survey courses in interdisciplinary humanities to understand the content of the curriculum and how an author's viewpoint shapes the product. By enumerating the texts and images authors and their publishers used to illustrate 20th century culture and the transition into the 21st century, the analysis generated a description of the range of perspectives from traditional to postmodern found in six sampled textbooks. Textbook content provided chronological data, while authors' source citations established identity properties of the works' contributors. Through a ranking system of authors' treatment of content and citations, the most traditional perspectives were compared to the most postmodern. Classifying cultural contributors by identity properties gave a quantitative rate of inclusion of traditionally excluded groups. A trend of increase in "diversity-infusion" was observed among all authors when the content of the textbooks was compared in chronological sequence. The qualitative differences, as constructed for this dissertation, indicate that each textbook constitutes a varied and unique representation of author perspective. The project's contribution to future research is the development of a database of art works and literary sources from the years 1900-2006 that can be used for quantification and for further study.

Abstract:
A contextual citation analysis was performed on a sample of 68 articles citing either or both oftwo key papers from the research field of stratospheric ozone monitoring. The theoretical approach of each article was assessed as either chemical or dynamical, or wasleft unspecified. Functions of citations to the two key papers were classified into 13 categories, seen to express various kinds of relevance relationships. Topical relatedness between citedand citing articles was studied in terms of number of shared descriptors and the union overlapmeasure. A certain theory~dependence, in the sense of a relatively high degree of correspondence between the theoretical approach of citing and cited articles, was observed in the material. The correlation between topical relatedness and citation relationships appeared to beweak.

RIVIERA, EMANUELA. "Mapping scientific literature. Structuring scientific communities through scientometrics." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/40095.

Full text
Abstract:
A sociologically integrated approach suggesting an interpretation of bibliometric indicators and maps is developed in this work. The programmatic element of the thesis is the integration of the constructivist perspective relating to the re-production of scientific community with the metric program in Bibliometrics. The accomplishment of the main purposes introduced above is realised through the following goals, which can be listed according to the level of generality. First of all, this work aims to demonstrate the potentialities of a proposal in the field of citation theory which encompasses different and divergent perspectives as it is based on the integration of structural-functionalist and constructivist approaches. More specifically, this proposal is applied to the field of Scientometrics, where the lack of a theoretical frame for interpreting bibliometric indicators as well as bibliometric maps constitutes a real problem as we are witnessing the affirmation of what can be called the “metric era”: as a matter of fact, like it or not, bibliometric measures and analyses are more and more important for scientists’ career. The purpose of providing a description of the intellectual and cognitive structure of the scientific field of Italian Sociology allows us, at the same time, to test the reliability of those bibliometric techniques employed in the empirical work here presented. In particular, we are testing the effectiveness of Bibliometrics in mapping scientific literature, as well as the effectiveness of the normative approach in describing citers’ behaviour with reference to high citation counts.

Abstract:
[English abstract] The procedures by which library collections can be evaluated are quite diverse, and some are rather complex. The Cantor Set Theory is applied with a structuralist approach as a methodological aid to decision-making about the collections development. The methodology suggested here makes use of local holdings information based on an evaluative study of the Spanish university library collections.

Buerkle, C. Wesley, Christopher C. Gearhart, and Carrie M. Oliveira. "According to, Student Motivations… : A Theory of Planned Behavior Investigation of Students’ Intention to Orally Cite Sources." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2017. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/508.

Full text
Abstract:
This study employs the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to understand the role of attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control on students’ intent to orally cite sources using complete, rather than partial, citations. Undergraduates (N = 326) enrolled in general education oral communication courses completed a self-report survey testing the TPB variables and students’ citation intentions. Findings demonstrate that subjective norms and perceived behavioral control predict student intention to cite sources and do so completely. Tensions between credibility gains and time constraints are also evident. Implications for teaching students in basic courses about oral citations are discussed.

PERI, ILARIA. "Quasi-convex risk measures and acceptability indices. Theory and applications." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/29745.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is organized in two parts: in the first one, we treat risk measures and acceptability indices from a theoretical point of view, while in the second part, we propose two applications of the quasi-convex results. The first contribute of the thesis regards the dual representation of quasi-convex and monotone maps. In particular, we compare the dual representation proposed by Cerreia-Vioglio et al (2011) and Drapeau and Kupper (2010) and we prove that they coincide. On the light of this comparison, we also propose a new representation for the quasi-concave and monotone acceptability indices. In the second part of the thesis we propose two different applications of the quasi- convex analysis to different sectors. The common idea has been to build a quasi-convex risk measure defining a particular family of acceptability sets, taking inspiration from the papers of Cherny and Madan (2009) and Drapeau and Kupper (2010). The first application is to the financial sector. We introduce a new class of law invariant risk measures, directly defined on the set P(R) of probability measures on R, that are monotone and quasi-convex on P(R). We build these maps by an appropriate family of acceptance sets of distribution functions. We study the properties of such maps and we provide some example. In particular, we propose a generalization of the classical notion of the V@R_λ, called ΛV@R, that takes into account not only the probability λ of the losses, but the balance between such probability and the amount of the loss. The V@R_λ and other known law invariant risk measures turn out to be special cases of our proposal. We further prove the dual representation of Risk Measures on P(R). The second application is to the evaluation of the scientific research. We introduce a new family of scientific performance measures, called Scientific Research Measures (SRM). This proposal originates from the recent developments in the theory of quasi-convex risk measures and is an attempt to resolve the many problems of the existing bibliometric indices. The key idea underlying the definition of SRM is the representation of quasi-concave monotone maps in terms of a family of acceptance sets. Through this approach, the SRMs are: flexible to fit peculiarities of different areas and seniorities; inclusive, as they comprehend several popular indices; coherent, as they share the same structural properties; calibrated to the particular scientific community; granular, as they allow a more precise comparison between scientists and are based on the whole scientist’s citation curve. We also provide a dual representation of a SRM, that suggests a new interesting approach to the whole area of bibliometric indices. Finally, we present a method to compute a particular SRM, called φ-index, and some result obtained by the calibration to a specific scientific sector.

This paper reviews and analyzes the theory of planned behavior (TPB). As an empirical analysis, the aim of the present paper is to provide insights into further extensions, to identify the main trends, and to show the evolution in the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Co-citation analysis and multivariate methods using SPSS were conducted to produce the correlation matrix and further analysis. Three main trends are shown to coexist within the theory of planned behavior (TPB): (1) extension or verification of existing body of knowledge or intellective structure of the theory of planned behavior (TPB); (2) introduction or incorporation of technological related applications or models such as technology acceptance model (TAM), information system (IS), and knowledge sharing (KS); (3) introduction of mediators or mediating variables that incorporate environmental or situational factors to the theory of planned behavior (TPB), such as physical activity (PA). Theories and implication were also derived.

Tamilmani, Kuttimani, Nripendra P. Rana, S. F. Wamba, and R. Dwivedi. "The extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2): A systematic literature review and theory evaluation." 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/18159.

Full text
Abstract:
Yes
The extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) is less than ten years old and has already garnered more than 6,000 citations with extensive usage in information systems and beyond. This research employed cited reference search to systematically review studies that cited UTAUT2 originating article. Based on UTAUT2 usage, the downloaded articles were classified into four categories such as: 1) General citation, 2) UTAUT2 application, 3) UTAUT2 integration, and 4) UTAUT2 extensions. Weber's (2012) theory evaluation framework revealed UTAUT2 as a robust theory on most dimensions except for parsimony arising from the complex model. UTAUT2 extensions emerged as popular UTAUT2 utilization category as researchers extended the model with context specific variables. Finally, UTAUT2 extensions were mapped to Johns' (2006) context dimensions to identify various limitations of the existing technology adoption research and to provide multi-level framework for future researchers with libraries of context dimensions.

Bell, Stephanie. "Under Review: Source Use and Speech Representation in the Critical Review Essay." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/6554.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis features a qualitative study of student source use and speech representation in two corpora of review essays that acknowledges the complexity of classroom writing contexts and the rhetorical nature of school genres. It asks how students engage with the texts they review, for what reasons, and in response to what aspects of the writing context. When considered as a distinct genre of student assignment, review essays make for a particularly interesting study of source engagement because they challenge students to maintain an authoritative voice as novices evaluating the work of an expert. In addition, citation issues in the review assignment might not be as obvious to students or their instructors as they would be, for instance, in a research paper for which multiple sources are consulted and synthesized. The review essays interrogated in this study were collected with appropriate ethics clearance from two undergraduate history courses. The analysis is extended to a small corpus of published reviews assigned as model texts in one of these courses. The study features a robust method that combined applied linguistics and discourse analysis to tease out connections between the grammatical structures of speech reports and their argumentative roles. This method involved a recursive process of classifying speech reports using Swales’ (1990) concepts of integral and non-integral citation, Thompson and Yiyun’s (1991) classifications of speech act verbs, and Vološinov (1929/1973) and Semino and Short’s (2004) models of speech reporting forms. In addition, the analysis considered the influence of the writing context on the students’ citation practices and took into account theories of rhetorical genre and student identity. The results show connections between assignment instructions and the effective and problematic ways students engaged with the texts they reviewed, such as a correlation between a directive to reduce redundancy and the absence of in-text attributions. Most notably, this study offers a fluid set of descriptors of the forms and functions of speech reports in student coursework that can be used by students, educators, plagiarism adjudicators, as well as scholars of rhetoric and composition, to illuminate some of the methods and motives of student source use.
