Abstract:
The influence of high temperatures on germination of Cistus laurifolius and Cistus ladanifer seeds was analyzed. Seeds were subjected to different temperatures for different times, afterwards they were sowed in plastic petri dishes and monitored for germinated seeds over two months. The germination rate observed in Cistus ldanifer was greater than in Cistus laurifolius. In both species, heat increased germination percentages. For Cistus laurifolius higher temperatures or longer exposure times were needed. Germination percentages of Cistus ladanifer were lower when heat exposure time was 15 minutes. It must be emphasized that germination occurred when seeds were not treated, while seeds exposed to 150C for 5 minutes or more did not germinate.

Abstract:
The first phases of regeneration of two Cistus species (Cistus laurifolius and Cistus ladanfer) are compared in experimental plots that were subjected to different treatments: cutting and burning. In both treatments the parameters used were: seedling number, height and cover. Differences between their rowth are discussed and compared with that of Erica australis subsp. aragonensis, that can resprout vegetatively.

Abstract:
The regeneration process of two Cistus species (Cistus ladanifer and Cistus laurifolius) was compared during the first four years after cutting, burning and ploughing in experimental plots, in León province (NW Spain). In the burnt plots, a quicker germination, followed by a higher death rate, was observed, especially for Cistus laurifolius. The number of seedlings tended to stabilize after one year in all experimental plots. During the whole study period, the burnt plots showed a higher number of seedlings. The ploughed plot presented the lowest number, while the cut plots kept intermediate values. The differences in cover values were not so marked in the different plots and, in the fourth year, there is still a tendency to increase. Neither the cover nor the height of the seedlings have attained the values they had before disturbance. By comparing the two species for the same disturbance, we found that the cover and height values were similar, but the number of Cistus ladanifer seedlings was higher. This fact can probably not be considered as a direct consequence of disturbance, as this difference was also observed previously.

Abstract:
Abstract Epicuticular and in tracellular flavonoids of Cistus laurifolius grown with and without UV radiation in a phytotron as well as under natural garden conditions in the field were studied. The amount of intracellular flavonoid glycosides of leaves receiving UV -A radiation was two fold higher than that measured in the absence of UV -A radiation , whether grown in the phytotron or in the field. Exposure of previously protected leaves to UV -A radiation increased the intracellular flavonoid glycoside content to that of unprotected leaves. The qualitative composition of intracellular flavonoid glycosides showed a reduced amount of quercetin-3-galactoside to the myricetin monosides when the leaves were grown without UV-A radiation in the field and in the phytotron . Epicuticular flavonoid aglycones were not influenced by UV radiation significantly.
