Full textAnimal welfare is defined as a positive state related to the fulfilment of the animals' physiological and behavioural needs. A crucial aspect of this welfare is the ability to express natural behaviours, such as the mother-young bond in mammals. In ewes, specific olfactory signals, such as inguinal wax (IW), play an essential role in helping lambs locate the teats for suckling and in strengthening their bond with the mother. In farming, some lambs are placed in artificial rearing (AR), which deprives them of their mother and natural olfactory signals, leading to increased stress, learning difficulties, and higher mortality rates. This thesis explores how IW could be used to improve the adaptation of lambs in AR. The results show that the presence of IW promotes lamb growth in AR and has an attractive effect on them, but it alone is not sufficient to optimize the learning of artificial suckling. This thesis suggests that further research on maternal odors is necessary to better understand their role and potential to improve farming practices, with the ultimate goal of enhancing animal welfare and their adaptation to unnatural farming conditions
