Abstract:
The purpose of this research paper is to explore the antecedents and consequences of circular entrepreneurship in emerging markets. The consequences of circular entrepreneurship will be explored through the lens of three dimensions of sustainability: social, economic, and environmental. This study used a multi-case approach, which is frequently applied in circular business literature. The study used convenient and purposeful sampling techniques to identify circular entrepreneurs starting a business by recognizing opportunities in CE. We interviewed the 15 entrepreneurs (all participants engage in plastic circular entrepreneurship) with more than 8 years of experience. We employed a semi-structured interview method because respondents explored important information during the interview. Atlas.ti, a prominent qualitative software package, was used for analysis. This study portrays the antecedents and consequences of circular entrepreneurship identified when circular entrepreneurs take the initiative to serve low-income customers. This study points out that circular entrepreneurs can be motivated both intrinsically and extrinsically. The consequences of circular entrepreneurship show how such enterprises impact on society, sustainability, and the economy. The study points out that circular entrepreneurship can have both positive and negative impacts on the environment. By investigating the determinants and consequences of circular entrepreneurship in emerging markets, the authors make a significant contribution to the field of circular economy and entrepreneurship. We have limited logistics and resources, thus we did not collect data from stakeholders, who might provide a richer picture and insights into how circular products affect their lifestyle. Policymakers can get a better understanding of such enterprises from the findings of this study. They should reassess policies regarding circular entrepreneurship and suggest ways to promote open innovation within circular entrepreneurship. Circular enterprises serve low-income customers by offering an affordable product with attractive features. The government should develop an open innovation action-packed forum to find, design, and create prototypes, as well as introduce more comprehensive sustainable solutions for wastable plastic products.

PurposeThe paper aims to contribute to the Circular Economy debate from the Entrepreneurship Education perspective. Despite scholars' growing interest in both these research streams, scarce consideration is given to the comprehension of their mutual implications and meaning.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is based on a cross-case analysis. It compares 16 higher education programmes launched by Universities in Europe aimed to create competences and skills for Circular Economy in students with different profiles. The analysis provides a critical view of the emerging trends for the entrepreneurship education skills and competencies needed for the emerging circular entrepreneurship paradigm.FindingsThe paper discusses the main trends of Entrepreneurship Education focused on Circular Economy debate at the European level: rationale and learning objectives (why); contents (what), target students and stakeholders (who) and the learning processes (how). Four thematic areas are identified as common patterns: circular economy business model, green supply chain management, technology entrepreneurship and innovation and public policies and institutional frameworks.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper sheds new light on a still under-researched area, suggesting several implications and avenues for future research in Circular Economy and Entrepreneurship Education. Limitations regard the need to analyse education programmes from a larger geographical area, to take into consideration interesting experiences in the rest of the world and to also collect quantitative data.Practical implicationsPractical implications arise for the development of learning initiatives for the Circular Economy: learning objectives and new thematic areas focused on circular, sustainable and innovative rethinking of the process for creating value in the incumbent companies; exploring meaning and benefits of collaborative approaches and participation in the circular economy innovation ecosystem and developing advanced models for soft-skills development in terms of leadership, motivational and creative skills.Originality/valueThe debate on CE can also be rooted in the paradigm of entrepreneurship as a core process to advance knowledge on valuable and sustainable innovation.

Global polarization and linear economy models has for generations been the servant of ruthless capitalism and bourgeoisie ventures. In such ruthless circumstance there has been alarming situation both globally and locally to challenge prevailing linear economy structures to question and create a sustainable platform for protecting the resources and user structures of our future generations. Life cycle assessments globally has been a case study which has shown the minimal usage of products in value based propositions and bringing the environmental ecosystem in a balanced structure irrespective of political or governmental interventions. From the birth of the Paris Agreements on Climate changes, scientists and technologists globally has stressed upon the importance of sustainability and resilience on global food security as well as natural resource management. In such scenario resource allocations even in advanced countries like Europe and America has fallen prey to gross inequality, gender gaps and faulty resource transitions even in most advanced regions. Shocking Gini coefficient figures across boundaries have led scientists and economists globally to rethink and restrategise the way strategic business management hovers globally and to better revisualise globalization and utilize the resources our earth has endowed us upon. This paper challenges prevailing notions and even best practices in current management scenario and principles of economics of entrepreneurship to jump start a society based on values, tradition and value based usage proposition; in other terms from a linear based economy to a sustainable resilient circular economy model with greater emphasis on environmental protection, poverty eradication with better integration of triple line bottom of pyramid and better community disciplines to foster a vibrant shared economy model. There is a persistent gap lying across various parameters of a linear economy which has in turn been the causal effect of human impoverishment, poverty and vast scale ecological destructions. A case based approach and exploratory study in this research paper tries to answer rising question in addressing this burning topic of circular entrepreneurship which is quite different in structure and outcome to normative economical falsifications arising out of entrepreneurship models which has till now failed to create a functional economy devoid of hazards and wastes.

Purpose In the context of China, the purpose of this paper is to empirically answer three related questions: Could circular agriculture (CA) attain economic, ecological and social benefits simultaneously? What is key to a successful CA business in emerging economies? And who plays the vital role in building and sustaining a circular business? Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a field study and looks at a farm in China. It uses a triangulation methodology to collect information. Besides longitudinal filed work at the farm, the researchers have also interviewed multiple stakeholders and conducted field research at the local markets. Findings With concrete performance data, the study proves that a circular approach can help achieve ecological, economic and social goals together. It shows that economic viability is essential to succeeding in circular operation, sufficient production pathways are required to make such operation sustainable, and entrepreneurship is key to build and grow a circular business. Research limitations/implications The findings point to the crucial role of entrepreneurship in promoting the circular model in emerging economies. These findings, however, may not be readily generalizable, given the limitations of the case study approach. Practical implications The study highlights a few areas in which government assistance can make a difference, including financial incentives, information provision, technical support and most importantly the creation of a positive environment for entrepreneurial development. Originality/value While prior research emphasizes the role of government in promoting circular economy in developing and emerging markets, the study proves that entrepreneurship is key to turning government initiatives into economically viable and sustainable circular operation.

Abstract:
Quality of life and social welfare are objectives of the social policy of any state. The study aims to identify the influence of factors such as the circular economy, digital innovation, sustainable entrepreneurship on social progress and completes the current approach identified in the literature by assessing the dependencies between the phenomena represented by them. The quantification of the influences of the enumerated factors on social progress was achieved by identifying some synthetic indicators, such as composite indices, which would surprise the complexity of the analyzed phenomena. To measure the progress of the transition to the circular economy – using multivariate analysis methods – a composite indicator has been proposed and determined that allows the ranking of EU states according to its orientation, as a premise of social progress, and can substantiate the adjustment national policies. The integration of the proposed indicator in the regression models used, with similar indices, is done to highlight the impact of the circular economy, innovation and sustainable entrepreneurship on social progress. Thus, the adaptation of digital technologies in current business models, the development of sustainable innovative entrepreneurship support the transition from the linear economy to a circular economy and offer new study opportunities.

The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted such challenges for the world’s socio-economic and financial systems Social entrepreneurship is an integral part of Europe’s diverse social market economy. The aim of the paper is to tackle the social entrepreneurship field in Latvia and in particular to reveal the enterprises operating in the textile industry, as fashion industry in general is evaluated as second polluting industry, being just behind oil industry. The paper is limited to social entrepreneurship in the field of textile, as it is a new waste stream that has received particular goals and thus needs to be managed in a more sustainable way. To promote social enterprises in the field of textile production and processing it is especially important to implement elements of the circular economy in the daily activities of a social enterprise. Fostering social entrepreneurship in the textile field allows to reach a range of goals simultaneously, including, but not limited to – decrease of textile waste volume, increase of upcycling and moving towards circular economy targets.

The paper focuses on the commonalities between Entrepreneurship and Marketing. Entrepreneurial marketing has not clearly shown the common grounds between the two disciplines. Organizations are learning that the skills acquired and mastered are not effectively matching the rapidly evolving conditions in the market. This development has impacted revenue and equally reveals the potent place of marketing in entrepreneurship. The methodology is exploratory, textual in design and divided into sections. The article contends that there is a circular links between entrepreneurship and marketing. Entrepreneurial activities create marketing and marketing creates entrepreneurial activities. Marketing interfaced Entrepreneurship by fostering positive rewards and risk minimization for the entrepreneurs through marketing mix. By implication, managers aspiring competitive edge must promote mutual interaction of the two concepts.

Abstract:
In this article, the conditions and determinants of the introduction and development of the circular economy (CE) in Poland were presented against the background of the widely discussed essence of circular economy, with particular emphasis on the Polish mining sector. In addition, the European Green Deal—an action plan for a sustainable economy for the entire European Union, was discussed. Particular attention was paid to the role of human resources in the area of supporting research and stimulating innovation, and in the area of activating education and training. These issues are further discussed in the next chapter by presenting the forms, ways and scope of education for sustainable development in the international context. Another chapter describes the EIT Raw Materials KAVA 5 RIS competition in Poland (in Kraków) at AGH-UST from 2019 to 2022, an international project in a consortium of four universities whose main objective is to strengthen entrepreneurship in the V4 countries in line with the recommendations of the “Green action plan for SMEs” in a way to meet the requirements of circular economy. The initiatives and trainings carried out within the framework of this project were discussed, and the results of the student survey on the level of knowledge achieved regarding entrepreneurship in the area of the raw materials industry were analysed. The validity and necessity of continuous education in eco-responsible citizenship has thus been confirmed.

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to gain insights into the implementation of circular economy from the perspectives of local entrepreneurs and organizations within the Växjö region. Design/methods/approach - This paper follows the case study design with local entrepreneurs and organizations as the unit of analysis. The authors adopted both iterative and abductive thinking in order to alternate between analysis of theories and empirical material. Systematic literature review with themes was used as a specific purpose and research question was specified from the beginning. When collecting empirical material, guided and semi-structured interviews were used. For the data analysis, “initial coding” was utilized, which allowed the authors to differentiate themes and thus perform a thorough analysis. Findings - Växjö Kommun has a long-term goal of fostering sustainability and circularity within the Växjö region through numerous communication channels and continuous collaboration and cooperation with various groups of stakeholders. Their efforts have facilitated the emergence of initiatives and projects from small entrepreneurs. However, the relationship between Växjö Kommun and other stakeholders (local entrepreneurs and organizations) face difficulties due to a lack of communication and differences in perception of how the strategies should be implemented. Practical implications - Through collecting, analyzing and combining theoretical and empirical material, insights were gained into the implementation of circular economy. Based on these, recommendations to the local entrepreneurs and organizations were outlined, which can be utilized when rethinking their strategies related to sustainable and circular projects in the region of Växjö. Originality/value - The originality of this paper lies in the absence of previous research conducted on similar topics within this local context. The authors believe that their paper will be valuable to both local entrepreneurs and organizations who wish to better understand the implementation of circular economy. At the same time, the findings could be useful for other scholars who wish to continue this research.

During the search for a thesis topic, the researchers established contact with a civil servant at Växjö Municipality in Sweden who introduced them to the prospective project of the Reuse Village as part of the city’s waste management plan to enhance circular economy. Hence, the researchers’ purpose for this thesis is to explore the determined values and stakeholders’ involvement linked to the engagement of entrepreneurs towards a circular economy. Moreover, a thorough explanation of the literature review is conducted including the environmental, economic and social sustainability, in addition to the entrepreneurial and stakeholders’ involvement and the different sustainable oriented entrepreneurs and the values that could possibly influence the entrepreneurs. The researchers used mixed research methods that comprise of qualitative interviews, secondary research, and case studies based on documentary secondary data to give a deeper explanation of the stakeholders and entrepreneurial involvement and show their position in the field of circular economy especially in the Reuse Village project. The main findings of the thesis elaborate more on the importance of circular economy that governments and local municipalities are pushing for. The outcome presents the directions that stakeholders lean towards, regarding the Reuse Village, and shows how the relationship between the stakeholders plays a major role in the progress of the notion of circular economy.

Um dos maiores desafios atuais da humanidade reside nos atuais métodos de gestão e avaliação de impactos referentes a diversos processos dentro da cadeia produtiva de bens de consumo que são cada vez mais exigidos pela vida contemporânea. Neste ponto, os Resíduos de Equipamentos Elétricos e Eletrónicos (REEE), irão gerar em 2020, cerca de 53,6 milhões de toneladas, o que significa um total de 7,3 kg por pessoa em todo o planeta. Contudo, apenas 17,4% (9,3Mt) são adequadamente reciclados, e representam um potencial na economia de 10 mil milhões de dólares, através de mecanismos de economia circular, aumentando a sustentabilidade do ciclo em todos os níveis.Mediante as tendências globais de crescimento desta corrente de resíduo, impulsionados pela disseminação da tecnologia da informação, fazem necessária uma abordagem ligada à sustentabilidade para ultrapassar os desafios da gestão atual de REEE. Este trabalho consistiu em analisar o ponto de situação referido à gestão de resíduos e equipamentos elétricos e eletrónicos na Universidade de Coimbra (UC) através de uma visão de empreendedorismo estratégico. Conduzido primeiramente sobre uma abordagem de inteligência empresarial, que analisa o ponto de situação atual da UC que elencou as etapas do Ciclo-de-Vida (CdV) dos EEE em aquisição, classificação, utilização, avarias, recuperação, armazenamento e abate de REEE. Assim, a informação foi recolhida e com a colaboração dos Serviços de Gestão do Edificado, Segurança e Ambiente (SGESA) dividiu as fases de gestão de REEE dentro da própria UC, compilando mais recentemente algumas informações relevantes sobre as 155 toneladas que foram devidamente recolhidas entre 2006 e 2019.Ao compreender o papel sustentável das Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES) na construção de conhecimento e na formação de parcerias para ultrapassar os desafios contemporâneos, foram selecionadas 4 IES de reputação internacional na temática: Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology e a Universidade Estadual de São Paulo. Assim foi realizando um benchmarking que comparou e reuniu as principais tendências disponíveis na literatura online, bem como iniciativas e projetos que disseminaram de forma eficiente uma gestão de REEE sustentável e inclusiva em todas as IES analisadas. A análise estratégica SWOT, que reúne as Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities e as Threats foi posteriormente executada com base no último Plano Estratégico do Conselho Geral da UC, mencionando a sua contextualização e suas inclinações estruturais. Assim, aproveitou-se toda a situação corrente de projetos e know-how para conduzir uma análise TOWS, que separou 4 categorias de ação estratégica, separando as vertentes Expand, Catch Up, Secure e Minimize que pretendem auxiliar os gestores da UC a tomar decisões de forma qualificada. Como a Universidade de Coimbra (UC) é uma instituição tradicional e que elencou diversos níveis de crescimento na sua investigação e desenvolvimento, fez sua uma abordagem sobre a situação dos REEE de uma forma global e localizada, atingindo todas as vertentes da sustentabilidade. Compilando a informação dentro da temática e foi proposto um Plano de Ação Sustentável de REEE dentro da UC. Este plano visa guiar esforços não só na gestão interna, mas na atuação em todo o fluxo de REEE na academia, para aproveitar o ambiente de inovação e sustentabilidade favorável.
Humanity's current challenges lies in the current methods of management and impact assessment related to various processes within the productive chain of consumer goods that are increasingly required by contemporary life. At this point, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) will generate, in 2020, about 53.6 million tons, which means a total of 7.3 kg per person worldwide. However, only 17.4% (9.3Mt) are properly recycled, and represent a potential savings of US $ 10 billion, through circular economy mechanisms, increasing the sustainability of the cycle at all levels.Through the global growth trends of this waste stream, driven by the dissemination of information technology and linked to sustainability, is necessary to overcome the challenges of current WEEE management. This work consisted of analysing the situation regarding this WEEE flow management at the University of Coimbra (UC) through a vision of strategic entrepreneurship. Conducted primarily on a business intelligence approach, which analyses the current situation of the University of Coimbra (UC) that listed the stages of the Life Cycle (LC) in the acquisition, classification, use, damage, recovery, storage and disposal of WEEE. Thus, the information was collected and with the collaboration of the Building, Security and Environment Management Services (SGESA) divided the WEEE management phases at the UC itself, more recently compiling some relevant information about the 155 tons that were properly collected between 2006 and 2019.By understanding the sustainable role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in building knowledge and forming partnerships to overcome contemporary challenges, four HEIs with an international reputation in the theme were selected: Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the State University of São Paulo. Thus, a benchmarking was carried out that compared and gathered the main trends available in the online literature, as well as initiatives and projects that efficiently disseminated a sustainable and inclusive WEEE management in all the HEIs analysed.The SWOT strategic analysis, which brings together Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, was subsequently carried out based on the latest Strategic Plan of the UC General Counsel, mentioning its contextualization and its structural inclinations. Thus, the current situation of projects and know-how was used to conduct a TOWS analysis, which separated four categories of strategic action, separating the Expand, Catch Up, Secure and Minimize strands that intend to help UC managers to make decisions rightly.As the University of Coimbra (UC) is a traditional institution and has listed several levels of growth in its research and development, it has taken an approach on the situation of WEEE in a global and localized way, reaching all aspects of sustainability. Compiling the information within the theme and a WEEE Sustainable Action Plan was proposed within the UC. This plan aims to guide efforts not only in internal management but in the performance of the entire WEEE flow in the academy, to take advantage of the favourable environment of innovation and sustainability.

No caso do mercado de marcas premium, constatou-se a existência de algumas lacunas, nomeadamente relativas aos critérios que devem reger a conceção e criação de uma marca de moda premium, para que esta tenha sucesso no mercado. Assim, o objeto de estudo desta dissertação foram as marcas de moda premium. A realização deste estudo iniciou-se com a introdução de teoria e conceitos relacionados com marcas de moda, as suas principais características e elementos de criação. Foi também abordada a construção da identidade de uma marca premium, evidenciando o desenvolvimento da brand language, o posicionamento, e a estratégia do mesmo. De seguida foi realizada uma análise de várias marcas de moda premium, identificando os modelos de construção e as suas estratégias no mercado. Para além da análise de elementos relacionados com estratégias de branding de marcas de moda, foram também abordados aspetos relacionados com a área do design de moda, como o planeamento e produção de vestuário, assim como a sustentabilidade ambiental neste contexto e a sua importância na economia circular. Por último, foi criada uma marca de moda premium, CASK, e desenvolvida uma primeira coleção de vestuário, colocando em prática todos os elementos identificados anteriormente, quer ao nível do design de moda, quer ao nível de branding. O estudo decorrente desta dissertação, permitiu contribuir para a literatura no campo de estudo de marcas premium, identificando critérios e estratégias que devem estar presentes na criação de uma marca neste segmento. A componente prática deste estudo, veio demonstrar a importância dos diversos critérios e estratégias aplicadas na área das marcas de moda premium, e tendo como resultado a efetiva criação de uma marca para implementação no mercado.
Creating a brand of success in the times that take place, in a world saturated with fashion brands is a challenge, however, there is a constant need in society for newness and consequently for creating new brands and products according to the desires and needs of the consumer . In the case of the premium brand market, certain shortcomings have been identified, in particular regarding the criteria that should govern the design and creation of a premium fashion brand, so that it will succeed in the market. Thus, the object of study of this dissertation were the premium fashion brands. The realization of this study began with the introduction of theory and concepts related to fashion brands, their main characteristics and elements of creation. It was also approached the construction of the identity of a premium brand, evidencing the development of the diagram, the positioning, and the strategy of the same. Next, an analysis of several premium fashion brands was carried out, identifying the construction models and their strategies in the market. In addition to the analysis of elements related to branding strategies of fashion brands, aspects related to the area of fashion design were also discussed, such as the planning and production of clothing, as well as environmental sustainability in this context and its importance in the economy Circular. Finally, a premium fashion brand, CASK, was created and a first collection of clothing was developed, putting into practice all the elements previously identified, both at the level of fashion design and at the level of branding. The study resulting from this dissertation allowed us to contribute to the literature in the field of study of premium brands, identifying criteria and strategies that must be present in the creation of a brand in this segment. The practical component of this study, demonstrated the importance of the various criteria and strategies applied in the area of premium fashion brands, and resulted in the effective creation of a brand for implementation in the market.

Abstract:
The impact of plastic waste on the natural environment has been increasingly alarming and largely acknowledged as potentially irreversible. Nonetheless, entrepreneurial endeavours can actively change the synergies of the plastic industry that partly hold sway over the global economy. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate how the birth of Moana, a Portugal-based start-up that produces 100% recycled-plastic surfboard fins, can contribute to the collective effort towards influencing the plastic industry synergies at a micro-level by implementing an artisan business model. To control for its viability as an alternative approach to producing environmentally friendly surfboard fins, customer segments are defined by means of a survey analysis, competition is examined on a comparative basis and a technologically singular production process are explored. Subsequently, results provided valuable insights on Moana’s feasibility. Competition is rather mild, and the technology used for production is economical and user-friendly. Additionally, proximity to the customer base is of utmost importance to ensure that sustainable oriented surfers are offered the knowledge and the sense of community required to root awareness and change their perception on plastic waste. In conclusion, Moana proves to be an achievable endeavour as a start-up rich in potential. If executed diligently, it may become a leading example and eventually offer the opportunity to replicate its business model in future entrepreneurial undertakings in numerous industries.
O impacto dos resíduos plásticos no ambiente tem sido cada vez mais alarmante e reconhecido como potencialmente irreversível. Não obstante, tentativas empreendedoras podem mudar ativamente as sinergias da indústria do plástico que, em parte, dominam a economia global. O objectivo desta dissertação é investigar como é que o nascimento de Moana, uma start-up portuguesa que produz quilhas para pranchas de surf totalmente de plástico reciclado, pode contribuir para influenciar as sinergias da indústria do plástico a nível micro, implementando um modelo de negócio artesanal. Para controlar a viabilidade deste conceito em alternativa à produção de quilhas ecológicas para prancha de surf existente, segmentos de clientes foram definidos através de uma análise de questionários. Com o mesmo propósito, foi feita uma análise comparativa da concorrência e foi explorado um processo de produção tecnologicamente único. Posteriormente, os resultados forneceram informações crucias sobre a viabilidade da Moana. O nível competitivo não é agressivo e a tecnologia usada para produção é económica e fácil de utilizar. Além disso, a proximidade para com os clientes é vital para garantir que os surfistas com práticas sustentáveis recebam o conhecimento e o espírito de comunidade necessários para criar consciência e mudar a sua percepção sobre o plástico. Em conclusão, a Moana demonstra ser viável como uma start-up repleta de potencial. Se executado com empenho, pode vir a ser um exemplo de liderança e, eventualmente, oferecer a oportunidade de replicar o seu modelo de negócio em futuras tentativas empreendedoras em inúmeras indústrias.
